gaming news VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino earns AAA Four Diamond Award!
The month of May brought exciting news to VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino, as they were awarded the esteemed AAA Four Diamond Award. By meeting strict criteria measuring all aspects of service and amenities, VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino has proven to be among the top hotel properties in Arizona and has earned the award in its first year of operation. “We are honored to be awarded this prestigious designation,” said General Manager, Jeff Martin. “The team here at VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino has diligently worked hard since our opening to provide the best guest experience in the valley with the highest quality amenities. This recognition shows that tremendous effort has not gone unnoticed.”

The AAA Diamond Rating process is North America’s premier hotel rating program. The program provides one of the industry’s most reliable ratings to guide lodging decisions for vacationers and business travelers in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. This is measured by the degree of hospitality, service, amenities and attention to detail a property offers its guests. The system provides hotel guests with a quick and dependable rating on service levels at thousands of hotel properties both locally and internationally. “AAA developed the Diamond rating system more than 75 years ago as a travel resource. It is one of the only rating systems that include on-site evaluations by anonymous inspectors,” said Linda Gorman, Communications and Public Affairs Director for AAA Arizona. “Earning a Five or Four Diamond Award is one of the highest accolades in the travel industry.” In fact, out of over 29,000 approved AAA properties worldwide, only 5.3% are awarded the four diamond designation. VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino is one of three casinos owned and operated by the Gila River Indian Community. Opened in July of 2013, the property includes over 950 slot machines, 36 table games, 90 wellappointed hotel rooms, over 6,000 square feet of conference space, the VeeQuiva Event Center and 6 dining options headlined by Arizona’s only Ditka’s restaurant.

F.A.T. Friday Blackjack Tournament
hile looking at Gila River Casinos website WinGilaRiver.com - I discovered that VeeQuiva Hotel & Casino is now having a Friday afternoon Blackjack Tournament as well as a “Last Saturday of the Month” Blackjack Tournament. And since I hadn’t been to the new property since the Grand Opening, I thought this would be a good time to check it out and play their tournament. The Tournament starts at 2pm every Friday, and costs $30 to enter – For an extra $5 you can buy an additional $1000 in chips. This Tournament is limited to 72 players, and each player starts with $5000 in play chips. The bets must be made in multiples of $50 with $100 being the minimum bet and $5,000 being the max. In the qualifying round the participants play 15 hands of blackjack and at the end of 15 hands the player with the most chips at each table advances to the next round. There is a chip count after hand eleven. I arrived about an hour early and checked out the casino. It’s very well done, and very spacious. I decided to play some blackjack while I

waited for the tournament to start. I had a nice run of cards and ended up making enough to pay for my entry fee, gas, and a nice chunk to put in my pocket. The tournament began right on time and after round one, I was the player with the most chips after 15 hands, and advanced to the finals. In the finals each player again starts with $5,000 in tournament chips. In this round after 21 hands the player with the most chips will be crowned the champion, but the Casino also pays 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place money. Going into the last hand at the final table there were just three players remaining, myself and two others. I had a run of bad cards when I was trying to make catch up bets and found myself in 3rd position with a chip total of $7,200. The leader had $12,100 and 2nd position $11,300. My outlook wasn’t totally hopeless. If I could double my chip total on the last hand, I would have a chance to win. Fortunately, I did get to bet last on the final hand which is a slight advantage. On the last hand the chip leader made a $200 bet, then 2nd
position made a $1300 bet. I knew now that I would have a chance if I could get all my chips in play - the problem was that the max bet was $5,000. To solve this dilemma, I bet half my chips or $3,600 with the intention of doubling down or splitting whatever cards I received. I was dealt an Ace, and a 4, the dealer showed a five. I doubled down and caught a six for a perfect 21 which gave me $14,400 in total chips and 1stplace in the tournament. In all it was a profitable day and a lot of fun. I intend on being a regular at their Friday Tournaments. I hope some of you will come out and play too.

The name itself is pure Americana: Harley-Davidson. Its profile is distinct. Its sound is unmistakable. It is a true icon seen every day on highways coast to coast, with riders cruising along seemingly without a care in the world. Now, this classic American machine is coming to the desert in a big way – the Great American Harley Giveaway at Lone Butte Casino, May 26 through July 4. Two grand prize winners will ride off with new Harleys on July 4 at 8PM one person will win a 2013 CVO™ Road King® and at 8:30PM one person will win a 2014 CVO™ Softail® Deluxe. “Everyone knows Harley-Davidson,” said Carolyn Thompson, General Manager of Lone Butte Casino. “It is one of the most recognizable brands in the country, if not the world. We think the promotion is a great way to gear up for an exciting summer. Plus, we get to have the bikes on display which is fun not only for our guests, but for all of us here at Lone Butte Casino.” In addition to the motorcycles, players can win up to $1,000 in gaming chips on Sunday, June 8 and 22, as well as on Friday, July 4 prior to the grand prize drawings. On each of those days, there will be hourly drawings from 2PM to 7PM at the Big City Sports Lounge inside Lone Butte Casino. The promotion is open to all Gila River Casinos Players Club Members, and guests can receive one free entry at Lone Butte Casino. Additional entries can be earned daily at the Lone Butte Casino blackjack tables. Blackjack players get one entry for every buy-in of $200 or more, as well as for every suited natural blackjack, and for every hand with 6-7-8 or 7-7-7. Players at $25 minimum tables earn 3-times entries. “We’ve focused this promotion on our table games players,” Thompson said. “It’s something we’ve done before and our guests really respond. In general, more promotions tend to be offered for the slot guests in gaming, that’s where you earn your entries. But at Gila River Casinos, we like to highlight our table games action, which is what we have done in the Big City Sports Lounge.” Big City has everything you want in a sports bar – great food, sports memorabilia, big screen TVs—with a unique twist: 12 live table games as well as an array of video poker games. The Big City Sports Lounge is just one of the hot attractions at Lone Butte Casino. There are nearly 800 slots, a 750-seat bingo hall, and over 20 table games. With its Players Club connected to both Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, Big City is able to offer linked progressive games such as the largest Pai Gow Progressive in Arizona, with payouts that can grow to $500,000 and more. 8 ARIZONA PLAYER June 2014

The excitement continues beyond the casino floor. Live entertainment is always on tap at Cascades Lounge, and the Verona Chophouse serves up mouthwatering satisfaction every Tuesday through Sunday. Lone Butte Casino is a 24/7 getaway that attracts players from across the Southwest, especially during the Great American Harley Giveaway. The two grand prize motorcycles are part of Harley-Davidson’s CVO—Custom Vehicle Operations—family. These bikes are limited-edition, customized versions of mass-produced models. The customization comes in the form of larger engines, intricate paint designs, and/ or special accessories not available on mainstream models. Harley-Davidson describes the 2013 CVO™ Road King® as the perfect Motorcycle to, “cruise with class and tour in comfort—brash boom bagger style, sound and plenty of premiums give this light tourer some heavy street swagger.” The 2014 CVO™ Softail® Deluxe “combines big features with an easy riding attitude. The low seat and dropped down center of gravity make handling a breeze,” Harley states on its website. “And the detachable windshield and saddlebags come off quick when you feel like stripping down.” “This is going to be a spectacular Fourth of July,” Thompson said. “Not just for the winners, but for everyone on hand. We’ve never had a giveaway quite like this, and of course, we invite our friends at Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino to get in on the fun.” Because the Players Club is linked among the three Gila River Casinos, players who visit Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino are also eligible to win. Guests can take their card to Lone Butte Casino any day during the promotion to get their free entry, and play blackjack to earn even more. “That’s the great thing about the Players Club,” Thompson said. “All three of the casinos have their own unique vibe, their own exciting promotions, and their own entertainment. The portability of the Players Club card makes it easier to get the most from each casino.” “Getting the most from Lone Butte Casino on the Fourth of July means getting a chance to ride off on an All-American Classic - Harley’s have their own alluring charm. “Come on by, take a look at the bikes,” Thompson said. “Once you do, you’ll want to pick up that free entry!” The Great American Harley Giveaway runs May 26-July 4 at Lone Butte Casino, with drawings on June 8, June 22, and July 4. Lone Butte Casino is located at 1077 S Kyrene Rd. in Chandler, AZ.

First All or Nothing Winner! The Arizona Lottery announced on May 21st that the first $25,000 top prize winning ticket for the All or Nothing morning draw on Tuesday, May 20, has been claimed. Kim Hodge of Casa Grande came forward as the first top prize winner of the new All or Nothing draw game. Hodge purchased four Quick Pick lines for the May 20 drawing and had one line that didn’t match any of the drawn numbers - earning her the top prize of $25,000. Hodge is a stay-at-home mom and enjoys spending time with her family and caring for her three dogs. She plans to use the winnings to pay off some bills and says she will continue to play All or Nothing because it offers a number of chances to win. Payson Woman matches nothing and WINS! The Arizona Lottery on May 28th announced that the third $25,000 top prize winning ticket for the All or Nothing morning draw on May 21 has been claimed. Nancy Gills of Payson came forward as the third top prize winner of the new All or Nothing draw game. Gills purchased a Quick Pick ticket which had no matching numbers, earning her the $25,000 prize. Nancy had a terrific reason for playing the new All or Nothing on-line game because (and this makes perfect sense) she never seems to match any numbers when playing Powerball or Mega Millions. So, she decided to give it a try, and guess what? You’re right – she matched not even one number to take home the Grand Prize! Gills and her husband love living in Payson where they spend their extra time shopping at garage sales and selling their crops of grapes to a local health food store. They plan to put their winnings into a retirement account. The winning ticket was sold at a retailer located at 1009 S. Beeline Highway in Payson. “It is exciting that there have already been three top prize winning tickets for All or Nothing during the game’s first week,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “We look forward to presenting more top prize checks to winners of this popular game.” All or Nothing is the first Arizona Lottery game offering players the chance to win twice daily, Monday through Saturday, with drawings at approximately 10:30 a.m. and 6:59 p.m. Players have the option of manually picking ten numbers between 1 and 20 or choosing a computer-generated Quick Pick. travel Willcox & Apple Annie’s Orchard by Phil Scudella
I grew up in the Midwest, and summer's end was a time to enjoy delicious apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries and more, ripe and ready for picking from the abundant fruit trees in our neighborhood. What has this to do with Wilcox, Arizona –and Apple Annie’s Orchard? Well, my first job in Arizona was in Willcox, and that 4th of July weekend decades ago was the perfect time to arrive since many experiences in those first few months had a familiarity with my younger days and assured me that I was in the right place. I remember those impressions every July, so from time to time we head back and spend the day at Apple Annie’s Orchard and treat ourselves to some great apples, peaches and pears right off the trees, fresh squeezed apple juice, and bring home home a fresh apple pie or two. It’s quite an experience – You’ll love it…So bring the family. Here are just some of the summer and fall events coming up. Sweet Corn Extravaganza July 12-13 & 19-20 8am-5pm Sweet corn picked at the peak of the season! Many other vegetables will be available for you to pick. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Edge of Tomorrow Aliens called “Mimics” have invaded Europe and appear to be unstoppable. Major William Cage, a public relations officer with the U. S. Army who has had no combat training, suddenly finds himself in a unit about to hit the beach in an all out assault on the alien invaders. He by David Ramsey is killed in the first few minutes but wakes up with a jolt the previous day unable to stop events from repeating themselves. After a few times of this happening he lives long enough to see a war hero, Sgt Rita Vrataski, die in an explosion. The next time he saves her and she tells him to find her when he wakes up again. He does and learns that she had the same experience he is having and offers to train him so he will survive. As he repeats more days he survives longer and eventually he and Rita determine they might be able to win the war by working together. The effects are very good and not over done. “Edge of Tomorrow” is the best action film of the year, so far, with a great cast and a well written story.
Maleficent Maleficent was a happy fairy guardian of the Moors who fell in love with a human. When the human betrayed her in a horrible way she became dark and vengeful. The man who betrayed her becomes King and when his daughter is born Maleficent crashes the christening to bestow her gift on the child or rather her curse. She watches as Aurora grows but and becomes attached to the child. She regrets the curse and tries to revoke it but cannot. The King grows more wretched and sends his armies to capture or kill Maleficent. Meanwhile, Aurora grows up and finds the faithful spilling wheel. This re-telling of Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty” from Maleficent’s perspective is well done with great visuals.

All the Lego characters are here including Batman, Superman, Iron Man and many of the older characters like Shaq. There are a lot of laughs with many quick one-liners and the animation is spectacular. I loved “The Lego Movie” until the live action ending.
Lone Survivor
A four man team of Navy SEALs goes into the hills of Afghanistan to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader only to end up trapped by a larger-thanexpected enemy force and fighting for their lives while waiting for rescue. As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds they must depend on each other and faith in their brothers at arms. Amazing action/ war sequences with real emotion. “Lone Survivor”, based on the true story of SEAL Team 10, it is one of the most realistic and devastating war movies of all time.
Non-Stop
Liam Neeson is back in his annual action flick. This time he is Bill Marks, a troubled air marshal, who gets a bizarre text messages on his secure phone while on a transatlantic flight. Soon, whoever is sending them is promising to kill someone on the plane every 20 minutes unless $150 million dollars is wired to an off-shore account. It gets really interesting when the first person dies and the account turns out to be in Marks’ name. He’s being set up, but why and how. Tense with good action “Non-Stop” will have your heart racing.
