ARIZONA STATE POKER CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS! Talking Stick Resort is kicking off the month of August with its 11th annual Arizona State Poker Championship on August 14th thru 18th. This special yearly event is a real crowd pleaser – the No Limit Hold ‘Em showdown draws locals and players from across the country each year. A record 1,460 hopefuls participated in 2014, and officials expect a massive turnout of 1,500+ players this time around. The ARENA Poker Room, which is the largest card room in Arizona, will be packed with excitement as contenders vie for a share of more than $1 million dollars. “The beauty of the competition is that anyone can take part in it—from the first-time player to a poker professional,” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations for Talking Stick Resort. “It’s really anyone’s game and as long as you have the right tactics, focus and skill, you can go home the 2015 champion.” Poker players can participate in the match with just a $1,100 buy-in. Each competitor will start the competition with $16,000 in tournament chips and have the opportunity to purchase an additional $10,000 chips for just $30. On the final day, the remaining 10 challengers will put their wits to the test as they battle it for the winning title. Four-time World Series of Poker champion Tom Schneider will serve as emcee of the final table, providing commentary for all observers. The 2015 competition will feature a few variations from years past including the addition of a dinner break on Aug. 14-16 as well as Poker Tournament Directors Association rules, upgraded satellites and enhanced structures. “The three-day event is one of our leading tournaments,” said Thomas Young, director of the ARENA Poker Room. “I witnessed my first championship last year and it did not disappoint. It was full of various twists and turns and I predict even more surprises will be in store this year.” In 2014, Phoenix native Robert Tanita was crowned the victor after a seven-hour battle

against his opponents. He took home $257,690 and his final two competitors, Jerry “Wolf” Sanchez and Brayden Quackenbush, claimed second and third place and received payouts of $175,200 and $131,400 respectively. Fourth and fifth-place finishers Steve Buell and Matt Affleck received $98,550 and $83,950 for their efforts as well. To better your chances of joining this year’s winner circle if you don’t have the $1,100 entry fee - visit the Arena Poker Room and enter the State Championship Shootout Tournaments. Single and double entry tournaments are available anytime 24/7 when 10 players sign up, but do it soon because registration closes on August 16. TJ’s Blackjack corner

History of Winning Blackjack

lackjack originated in French Casinos around by TJ by Jorgensen 1700 where it was called TJ Jorgensen “Ving-et-un” (“Twenty-andone”) and has been played in the US since the 1800’s. Blackjack is named as such because if a player was dealt a Jack of Spades and an Ace of Spades as the first two cards (Spade being the color black of course), the player was paid extra. Gambling was legal out West from the 1850’s to 1910, at which time Nevada made it a felony to operate a gambling game. In 1931, Nevada re-legalized casino gambling where Blackjack became one of the primary games of chance offered to gamblers. In addition to the United States, countries operating casinos include France, England, Monaco, and quite a few Caribbean Islands. The first recognized effort to apply mathematics to Blackjack began in 1953 and culminated in 1956 with a published paper. Roger Baldwin wrote a paper in the Journal of the American Statistical Association titled “The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack” These pioneers used calculators, probability, and statistics theory to substantially reduce the house advantage. Although the title of their paper

10 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2015

was “Optimum Strategy “, it wasn’t really the best strategy because they really needed a computer to refine their system. Professor Edward O. Thorp picked up where Baldwin and company left off. In 1962, Thorp refined their basic strategy and developed the first card counting techniques. He published his results in “Beat the Dealer”, a book that became so popular that for a week in 1963 it was on the New York Times best seller list. The book also scared the hell out of the casinos. The Casinos were so affected by the book that they began to change the rules of the game to make it more difficult to win. The rule changes didn’t last very long as players protested by not playing the new blackjack. The unfavorable changes resulted in a loss of income for the casinos, and of course not making money is a sin, so they quickly resorted back to the original rules. As Thorp’s “Ten-Count” method wasn’t easy to master and many people didn’t really understand it anyway, the casinos made a bundle from the games newly gained popularity thanks to Thorp’s book and all the media attention it generated. Another major contributor in the history of winning Blackjack play is Julian Braun, who worked at IBM. His thousands of lines of computer code and hours of Blackjack simulation on IBM mainframes resulted in The Basic Strategy, and a number of card counting techniques. His conclusions were

used in the second edition of “Beat the Dealer”, and later in Lawrence Revere’s 1977 book “Playing Blackjack as a Business” Lawrence Revere was my personal mentor and I actually took lessons from him. Lastly, let me mention Ken Uston who lived here in Phoenix and was a teammate of mine. He used five computers that were built into the shoes of our playing team in 1977. We won over a hundred thousand dollars in a very short time, but one of the computers was confiscated and sent to the FBI. The Feds decided that the computer used public information on Blackjack playing and was not a cheating device. You may have seen this story in a movie made about our Blackjack exploits, and detailed in his book “The Big Player”. Ken was also featured on a 1981 “Sixty Minutes” show and helped lead a successful legal challenge to prevent Atlantic City Casinos from barring card counters. Then the MIT students used those ideas and beat the Vegas Casinos out of Millions. Their story was told in the movie “21”, Until next time I hope you play winning Blackjack. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years and is known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious “World Series of Blackjack”.To contact TJ Jorgensen for questions or information on his books, send an e-mail to; tj4justice1@msn.com

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

thingamajigs and whatchamacallits

here was a time when I concluded that knowing the names of the parts on video poker devices was unimportant since stating technical names or how they work had little impact on results. I have since revised my thinking, because by misconceptions can lead to bizarre and costly deciLinda Boyd sions. Here are some standard thingamajigs and Whatchamacallits by name along with what you should know about them.

Display Glass:

The glass that covers both slot and video poker machines. Two things that matter are: A). If the machine you are using for a VP tournament has been used for keno it may be badly scratched and handicap your play. (That’s because some keno players tap and scratch their numbers hoping it makes them come out.) If you’ve paid an entry fee you should ask to be assigned to a different machine because making correct holds is crucial and unclear graphics will handicap your play. B). If you bang the device too hard in frustration it could crack and you’ll have to pay for the expensive replacement glass. (I’ve witnessed this happening on more than one occasion.)

Pay Schedules:

Payouts are perhaps the most important thing to examine before depositing money. Either on the front panel or on the video screen - find a list of winning poker hands along with the return for each hand. Never assume the pay tables are identical for the same game. For example, Double Bonus Poker may have a different payout for a full house and a flush. To know the expected return, either run the data through your tutorial software (I recommend WinPoker) or remove a copy of pay schedules from my book, “The Video Poker Edge” then match it with the one you find in the casino.

Ticket Dispenser:

This slot on the device prints a bar-coded ticket when you push the cash out button. If you’re going to leave your machine for a few minutes it’s best to take your ticket with you. However, if you decide to leave your credits then you should at least push the draw/deal button and then make the card holds when you return. That way if a thief just pushes the cash out button the ticket won’t come out. If you’re playing a slot machine, then you can wait until you hit a bonus round to leave for a few minutes and play the bonus when you return.

12 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2015

Again, the ticket won’t come out until after the bonus has been played.

Slot Card Reader:

This is an opening designed to hold your player’s card. Make sure the lights are green (not red or yellow) before you deposit money. Always play with a card inserted and never believe players when they tell you that you’ll win less or other rubbish when your card is in the device. The micro-processing unit is located in an entirely different part of the device and it’s impossible for the card to impact either the cards dealt or drawn. Most casinos offer cash, comps or both based on your play and the number of promotional entries is usually based on coin-in. Arizona casinos will provide you with win/loss statements at tax time when requested. So if you win a big jackpot generating a W-2G ($1,200 or more in a single play) you can fade your winnings against your losses in Arizona. Many states don’t allow that but the federal return does. So you’re actually paying taxes that you don’t owe when there’s no data indicating gambling loses. With no card, there’s no way to have win/loss records.

Micro-Processor Unit (MPU):

I won’t go into detail about the MPU or “guts” of the device since I haven’t seen the logic board on the newest devices and the chips don’t impact how you play anyway. I will say it’s important to know that the program chip includes the random number generator) and Erasable/Programmable ReadOnly Memory. There is no way the casino anywhere in the state of Arizona could cause or prevent hands from being dealt or drawn. That’s precisely why you want the best pay schedule available within the casino, say a 9/6 Jacks or Better instead of an 8/5JOB. If you’re told that the casino set certain hands, say a royal flush - they are incorrect.

Final Thoughts:

Knowing how some parts of slot and VP devices work you’ll be able to dispel some of the ridiculous rumors floating around the casino floor. Nobody is guaranteed to go home a winner, but those that play smart get the best odds of doing so. Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules & strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in current editions of “American Casino Guide” Her radio shows will soon be available on iTunes. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle – Available at amazon.com, bookstores or Square One Publishers. www.squareonepublishers.com Toll Free: 877-900-BOOK

travel - Las vegas

Ryan Malikowski When planning a trip to Las Vegas, there are things that need to be taken into consideration. Where to stay? Where are you going to eat? And what are you going to do for entertainment, besides testing your luck on the casino floor? Luckily, Caesar’s Entertainment (formerly Harrah’s) has you covered on all of those fronts. This past trip to Vegas, we had the pleasure of staying at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino – one of our favorite hotels to stay at when in Las Vegas due to its great location relative to the rest of our favorite casinos. We were even lucky enough to get a room with an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower and the Bellagio fountains and it was awesome! The rooms at Planet Hollywood are themed after some famous movies. We stayed in a room themed after «City Slickers 2: The Legend of Curly›s Gold.» This is one of my favorite comedies, so it was pretty cool to stay in a room that had some replica memorabilia and photos from the movie. As a foodie, where to eat is always my most difficult decision when taking a vacation. Las Vegas makes that decision even more difficult since there are so many great options to choose from. Not only is there a ton of variety, but there are many different options for all the various price points. This trip, I wanted to sample some of the more upscale, fine dining restaurants that Caesar›s Entertainment has to offer. The most obvious place to start was the Sterling Brunch located at BLT Steak inside of Bally’s. At about $90 per person, the Sterling Brunch (Sunday’s only) is definitely not your standard Las Vegas Buffet.

18 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2015

Some say the “food’s too good to qualify as a buffet,” given the “mega-selection” of eclectic fare like caviar, lobster and “freeflowing champagne” rolled out at this “gastronomic extravaganza” in Bally’s; ok, it might be the “most expensive Sunday brunch in America,” but fans say it’s “worth every penny — Zagat The incredible food along with unlimited Perrier-Jouet Champagne, Mimosas, and Bloody Mary’s ensures a lasting memory of just maybe the best buffet that you will ever experience. The quantity of the selection pales in comparison to most Las Vegas buffets, but the quality of the selections is a cut above the rest. Filet mignon, lobster tails, king crab legs, caviar, and a carving station that featured rack of lamb and pork belly is enough to make any foodie’s mouth water. The Sterling Brunch also features sushi, quality meats and cheeses, an omelet station featuring some high end additions for your eggs, as well as sweet and delicious banana bread pudding and amazing French toast. The quiet star of the meal may have been the fresh popovers that were brought to the table when we sat down. These fresh baked pallet pleasers were served with butter and coarse ground sea salt. With all of the high quality food to choose from, it was difficult for me to decide what I wanted the most of...but for me, it was lobster tails. The Sterling Brunch may not one of those places we go to every time we’re in Las Vegas, but we will definitely make a point to go once every two or three trips. It was THAT good – even for the price. It was hard to even think about dinner for a while after the experience at the Sterling Brunch, but we knew that we wanted to try one of the many steakhouses that Caesar’s Entertainment has to offer. With such great options such as BLT Steak, Gordon Ramsey’s Steakhouse, and several others, it was not an easy decision. We finally decided on the Old Homestead located at Caesar’s Palace. We chose the Old Homestead because it is billed as a classy, old school New York Steak house whose origins date back to 1868. A restaurant that has stood that test of time must be good, and we were not disappointed. I started the meal with the French Onion Soup, which is a must order for me any time that I go to a new restaurant. It was incredible. It came out so incredibly piping hot that it took some time before I could really dig in, but it did not disappoint. The staple of a great French Onion Soup is the cheese that gets baked around the edge of the crock, and the Old Homestead succeeded. For dinner, we opted for the 34oz Prime Porterhouse for two. It was a very difficult choice between this and the Ribeye for two, but since it was at a classic steakhouse The Old Homestead….a porterhouse seemed like the obvious choice. It arrived at the table pre-carved and the filet and New York strip sections were cooked to absolute perfection. The flavor was amazing. We paired this with a side of their classic mac & cheese...which was a great choice. Unfortunately, we were both way too full to even attempt des-

travel

sert, but we did not let that take away from the great food and classic, elegant charm of our Old Homestead experience. We needed a way to wind down the evening and give our stomachs a break. We decided to walk over to The LINQ and ride the High Roller...the world’s tallest observation wheel.

Measuring in at an incredible 550ft tall, the views from the High Roller are unmatched by anywhere else in the city. Each ride lasts 30 minutes and each spherical cabin can hold up to 40 people. During the day, prices start at $26.95 per person and go up to $36.95 per person in the evenings. Also, if you are looking for a fun happy hour experience, the High Roller offers 30 minute rides with an open bar right there in the cabin. No matter what you’re looking to do while in Las Vegas, Caesar’s Entertainment has you covered – from great resorts with amazing restaurants to exciting shows and attractions. So next time you visit Las Vegas, indulge yourself at the Sterling Brunch and the Old Homestead Steakhouse. You will never look at food in Vegas the same way again. gaming news A Fantasy comes true!

Susan Carter, Phoenix, purchased a few Quick Pick tickets for the May 18 Fantasy 5 drawing at the Circle K located at 35th Street and Indian School Road. The next morning, she went to a store and checked her ticket using the self-scanner. When the machine showed that she had a winning ticket, she took it to the store clerk to check. Susan wasn’t quite sure who was more surprised, the clerk or herself. He thought she’d won $50,000. At that point, Susan signed the back of the ticket, and she and her brother drove right to the Lottery. It was only after the ticket was checked at the Lottery that Susan discovered she’d won the $404,000 Fantasy 5 jackpot. Her first comment when she could speak was, “What? You’re kidding!” Once she’d calmed down a little, she called her brother, who was waiting outside in the car, to tell him the news. He stayed in the car. This win will have a big impact on Susan’s life, but she is going to continue with her life as she has been doing. She is in school working toward her degree in criminal justice. Her goal upon obtaining her degree is to work with families with children to help them stay together as a family unit. She is going to pay off some bills and let an advisor help her invest the money so it will work for her.

Redeemed Scratchers lead to BIG WIN! JoAnn Schmidt, Scottsdale, redeemed some tickets and used the money to purchase two Win It All Scratchers tickets from a Lottery vending machine inside the Safeway at 32551 North Scottsdale Road. She scratched the ticket in her car. As soon as JoAnn saw that one of the tickets was a $100,000 winner, she took it back to the store to be checked. Less than an hour later, she signed the back of the ticket. When JoAnn arrived home, she immediately told her husband and son. Her voice was shaky because she was so excited. JoAnn spent the rest of the day with a big smile on her face. JoAnn is a regular Scratchers player. She likes playing them and usually has at least some small wins to keep her interested. Although retired, JoAnn keeps busy spending time with her grandkids. She and her husband enjoy traveling. With regard to the money, JoAnn and her husband will discuss helping the family.

gaming news Crackdown on Illegal Gambling

For example, on the screen players might see the word “reveal” instead of the traditional word “spin” as on an electronic slot machine. The change in verbiage does not make these machines or the business legal under Arizona law. The Arizona Department of Gaming takes complaints about illegal gambling businesses very seriously. These unregulated cash businesses can often attract violent crimes to area neighborhoods, as recently seen in the Phoenix area. The recent partnership between Arizona Department of Gaming and Phoenix Police has led to the closure two of these illegal gambling operations after serving search warrants on each during the past month. Those operations have also lead to the voluntary closure of at least eight other known illegal gambling locations and the eviction of two businesses by their landlords. If you feel a business in your area might be an illegal gambling operation, you can e-mail the location to the Arizona Department of Gaming anonymously, that address is info@azgaming.gov

On Thursday afternoon July 9th investigators from the Arizona Department of Gaming and members of the Phoenix Police Department served a search warrant at a business named Ten & Two located at 2945 E. Bell Road. During the joint operation almost a dozen people were detained in connection to the business and one will be facing multiple charges including operating an illegal gaming facility, promotion of illegal gambling, and racketeering. Several people who may have been customers inside the business were also arrested for various outstanding warrants or drug offences. Over the past month investigators have been looking into the business and found it was operating as sweepstakes based internet café. The illegal gambling operation allowed paying customers to play casino style games on computers inside the business. The games simulated what is often seen on the screens of electronic slot machines inside regulated casinos. However, these businesses often attempt to disguise their illegal activity by changing the games to appear as sweepstakes games.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Terminator Genisys John Connor saves a young Kyle Reese from a terminator, mentors him and then sends him back in time to save him mother, Sarah Connor. Stop me if you have heard this before - but wait maybe you haven’t. When Kyle arrives in 1984 things are not as he by expected them to be - or as we remember David Ramsey them from the original movie. The timeline has been changed so when Kyle is rescued by the Sarah and the original Terminator he is just a surprised as we are. Everything is different including the year that Judgement Day takes place. It’s great to see Arnie back in his familiar role but the story has too many holes to be more than just a fun popcorn movie with lots of action.

Self/less Damian is one of the richest men in New York but even he can’t beat cancer. He is given the opportunity to extend his life in a unique way. Dr. Albright has developed a method that will transfer Damian’s mind to a fully grown cloned body – A body that is in its thirties and perfect in every way. Once the transfer is completed he Damian starts his new life young and rich. He has withdrawn symptoms that cause him to look deeper into Albright’s operation. The tone of the film becomes an action film for the second half. It does present some very thought provoking ideas before the bullets start flying.

David’s Video Details

Ex Machina

Caleb in a programmer with a major company when he wins a contest at work and gets to spend a week with the genius founder of the company at his isolated mansion. Once there he is surprised to discover that his boss has perfected robotics to the point that he needs someone to administer a touring test on his latest invention - a robot that looks and acts like a woman. An interesting take on the idea of sentient robot but it has just enough questionable things to keep it from being brilliant.

Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The hotel is doing great and Sonny has a dream of opening a second one but he is busy with the plans for his upcoming marriage. Meanwhile, all the residents are adjusting to living in India Evelyn and Douglas have joined the workforce and are seeing where their regular dates lead, Madge is juggling two wealthy gentlemen and Muriel is delving into her new position as co-manager. The arrival of a handsome American turns the hotel on its head. While not as good as the original it is worthy sequel.

Paul Blart Mall Cop

Jupiter Jones works as a housekeeper in Chicago until aliens try to kill her. She is rescued by a handsome alien warrior with flying boots and discovers that she is intergalactic royalty. She is the heir to the Earth that three powerful siblings are fighting over. Soon Jupiter is kidnapped by each of the siblings and is then rescued by the same warrior. Of course, she falls for her pointy eared guardian. The special effects are spectacular but the story is repetitive as the kidnap rescue cycle repeats itself at least three times. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. Good News, Bad News:

NO RESPECT

That was a common set up line for one of the greatest short story tellers that ever lived - Rodney Dangerfield – I do miss that guy – he was something special. Here are a few laughs courtesy of Rodney; I took my car to a mechanic for a minor repair, when I picked it up I asked him what the total was, he said “$200”, I said “wait a minute, what about the estimate you gave me for $100” he thought for a second and replied “I forgot about that – make it $300” I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me – he told me I was ridiculous because I haven’t met everyone yet! My wife met me at the door last night in a sexy negligee; unfortunately she was just coming home I met a woman the other night at the bar, she gave me her number and address, I called her and she said “come on over, nobody’s home” I went over – Nobody was home. My psychiatrist told me I was crazy, I said “I want a second opinion” – he said “OK, You’re ugly too” When I was born, I was so ugly the doctor slapped my mother. When my old man wanted sex, my mother would show him a picture of me. Just once I would like to take a Sunday drive with the family without having every car that passes us point to one of my tires.

Hello, my sweet Darling Dale, I have been unable to sleep since I broke off our engagement last month. Won’t you forgive and forget? Your absence is breaking my heart. I was a fool, Greg was a mistake, I regret meeting that jerk at the company picnic and leaving with him. No one can take your place. I love you. All my love, Beth. xxxxoooxxxx P.S. Congratulations on winning the lottery last Wednesday!

“I have good news and bad news,” the defense lawyer says to his client.” “What’s the bad news?” The lawyer says, “Your blood matches the DNA found at the murder scene.” “Dammit!” cries the client. “What’s the good news?” “Well,” the lawyer says, “Your cholesterol level is pretty low at 120.”
