A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
Tallest Munchkin
layers have verbalized ultimatums for years about ‘if’ casinos do this “then” I’ll do that. For example, many years ago it wasn’t just me that said “if casinos go from a single to multiple by blackjack (BJ) decks, then they can color me gone”. Linda Boyd Well not only did management go to multiple decks (even I reneged by playing with two decks), but they have enacted a cornucopia of house-edge game-changers for BJ. Let’s see, shuffling up, automatic shuffling devices, 6/5BJ payouts, and the dreaded rule “dealers hit on a soft 17”. Toss in a variety of casino-edge optional side bets, varying from house-to-house, and the game is mostly a disaster. Not only are the seats still occupied by enthusiastic players but most don’t even realize their house has an additional advantage with the “soft 17” hit. So, wrong I was about the specifics that would drive business away from casinos when they downgrade their games. However, many players have become wiser and more selective. I won’t say all gamblers because just like in days gone by you will always find some players that are simply mad at their money. These tips are for those that want to find the best odds out there for their favorite video poker (VP) games.
Tallest Munchkin:
Check Pay Table:
I just say uh-huh when VP players claim the pay schedule doesn’t matter because “the casino programs them to pay the same”. Of course nothing could be further from the truth because every device on an Arizona casino floor has an RNG (random number generator) on its logic board. In effect these people are accusing the house of cheating and that’s just not the case. They don’t have to break the laws (requiring an RNG) to increase their edge. All they have to do is adjust their pay tables to return less for winning hands and that’s precisely what some are doing. That’s why you should always check the pay tables before selecting a game and depositing money into the machine.
Consider Cash and Comps: Many moons ago the cash back (bounceback and earned through play), food comps, promos and other incentives were simply icing on the cake. That’s no longer true because downgrading of VP payouts along with ordering lower payout chips for traditional slots is here to stay. You do have to factor in your cash back opportunities to accurately evaluate the play. The other perks are a consideration for me as well, but I don’t put it on a par with cash.
Although I’ll stick to VP, you should consider casino shopping for playing table games. They’re not all the same, even if the only difference is with their Switch Games: comps, hosts, promos and restaurants. In terms of VP, all of the above vary If your Arizona casino suddenly downgrades your favorite VP game, and both the games offered and pay tables do as well. say 9/6DDB (9/6 Double-Double Bonus, ER 98.9808%, variance 41.98498), then switch to 9/6JOB (9/6 Jacks or Better, ER 99.5439%, variance 19.51468). As an aside, the 9/6JOB game was far better to begin with a higher theoretical return and a much lower risk to your bankroll (lower variance) but players love the DDB roller coaster. If you do change games make sure you know key holds by practicing at home with your tutorial software (I recommend Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker).
Change Casinos: Even though you may love your host and the rest of the staff, there are times when you have to say adieu to your home casino. You came for an evening of entertainment and if the game-downgrading turns your “evening” into 15 minutes each and every time, then you have to consider other options. Give other local casinos a chance by inspecting their offers before heading for a movie.
Final Thoughts: It may be time for a reality check and choose the tallest munchkin instead of shooting for the stars because former optimal casino plays no longer exist. If you want to try your luck in today’s casinos you’ll increase your odds of winning by looking for the best deal available. Keep in mind that you’re not married to your favorite casino so if conditions change you can hook up with another house.

REEL REVIEWS BY KEVIN CUMMINGS
A Quick Glance at This Year’s G2E
Every September since 2001 the gaming industry has gathered in Las Vegas, which is considered the holy land of all things gambling. For three days, any business that specializes in producing gaming products (or anything that can loosely be related to the gaming industry)“Showcase” their new offerings at G2E (Global Gaming Expo) It is truly an overwhelming experience to see how many new games and new technology is out there. The gaming show is enormous...with some manufactures bringing over 300 different games. While I won’t be able to mention each and every game from the over 1,400 games at the show, I want to list some honorable mentions and games which I expect to be in Arizona over the next year. For the past few years G2E has really become a battle of the licensed games. This year, the new licensed games were out in full force and quite a few of them translated into fun and exciting games. The gaming industry has really transformed in the last year, with large companies gobbling up the smaller competitors to become super-sized. G-TECH purchased IGT, Aristocrat acquired Video Gaming Technologies (VGT) of Oklahoma, and Scientific Games gobbled up WMS and Ballys. Scientific Games – For the last few years the industries’ innovation has always relied on hardware. The Simpsons takes advantage of a brand new cabinet from Scientific Games called “Game Scape.” The cabinet has three button screens in a setup similar to a standing dinner menu. Over 27 years of clips, characters, and laughs are throughout the game. There is a new Willy Wonka as well on the Game Scape. Other notable games from Scientific are Cher Believe...based on the woman who only needs one name. Cirque du Soleil - Kooza (the first of many games in the series), Rocky Horror Picture Show, Michael Jackson ICON, Elvis Lives, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 12 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2015
Aristocrat Last Year, Aristocrat introduced the Arc cabinet...a MASSIVE 16 foot tall curved slot machine where players are sensationally immersed. Sitting in the chair is an absolutely overwhelmingly good experience. This year, Aristocrat displayed multiple new game titles on the Arc. The first was Elvira Mistress of the Dark in “DOUBLE D” vision. I got a good chuckle out of this game because when Elvira lands on the reels her “prized possessions” jiggle. There are plenty of fun references of her “Double- D’s” like; Hooters, Jugs, Cans, Melons and all the other innuendos for breasts. A more civilized and proper game on the Arc will be Downton Abbey. The entire Crawley family delivers posh wins in this Aristocratically themed game. Walking Dead II was on display also. The first game was launched into super success two years ago and this title was enhanced to take advantage of the dual screen Arc cabinet. Konami went back to their arcade gaming roots and introduced Frogger. Randomly, players trigger a special bonus where players dodge cars, trucks, and hop on logs to win prizes and progressives. This is a “Reel” blast from the past of nostalgia with this great game. IGT - The recent merger was most evident with IGT and GTECH...with them showcasing a new 3D Wheel of Fortune. Players can witness the game in full 3D and take an exciting spin on the wheel. Plants Vs. Zombies also makes a 3D debut. If you’re a fan of the casual game, you will love the imagination of the game designer. Another fun title that I enjoyed was Cleopatra 3. The Queen of the Nile is back with this unique Colossal Reels-style game that transfers wilds. In the bonus, players continue to get multiplied free spins until the wheels spin and award a final spin at 25x.
TJ’S BLACKJACK CORNER
Counting Cards Explained
hen the first hand out of a six deck shoe is dealt the player is at about by TJ by a -.57 disadvantage. If you Jorgensen TJ Jorgensen always make the same size bet, the long term house edge will eventually have its effect and you will lose. However, there are times when the Player has the advantage because of the composition of the remaining cards to be played. If you only knew when the cards were in the Players favor, you could take advantage of this situation and bet more. As tens are removed from the deck it gives the House an advantage because the Players will get more stiff hands and the Dealer will make more hands. When you remove the small cards from the deck it gives the Player an advantage because they will get more solid hands. If I am playing a single deck game and I remove two small cards (2-6) it will put the Player at even odds with the house, so in theory the Player will win just as much as they lose. If I remove four small cards from the deck the player would have about a 1% advantage over the house on the upcoming hand. This is basically how card counting works. The Player assigns a plus one (+1) value to cards 2-6 and a minus one (-1) value to 10 through Ace. By keeping track of the cards that are dealt the Counter knows if they or the House has an advantage on the upcoming hand. The most powerful (legal) means of overcoming the casino’s edge in Blackjack is to vary your bets according to the true count. Additional gains of .2 to .3% are available to those who also vary the play of their hands according to the true count. You undoubtedly have had situations where so many
14 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2015
small cards had been dealt that you just knew that hitting that 12 against the dealer’s 3 was going to get you a face card. There is a point, as measured by true count, where standing with a 12 against a 3 is more profitable than hitting. This is called a “basic strategy variation”
BASIC STRATEGY VARIATIONS
Modifying the play of your hand according to the true count will occur about 10% of the time. Should the count drop, you will double less, hit ‘stiff’ hands more and split pairs less often. As the count goes up, you will double more often, hit ‘stiffs’ less and split pairs more. For each basic strategy play, there is only one variation – For example, the variation for the hand 10, 6 versus 10 is to stand instead of hit with a true count of 0 or more; you would never double and you obviously may not split. Another example is 5, 4 versus 2. Basic strategy says to hit, but if the count is high enough, you would double this hand. A good example on the minus side is A-2 versus 5; basic strategy says to double, but if the count is below 0, you should just hit. The easy way to remember something like that is “Double Ace-2 vs. 5 at 0 or higher.”
THE POWER OF BASIC STRATEGY VARIATIONS
The value of any variation is determined by how often it will, on average, be used. If you play 100,000 hands of Blackjack a year (about 20 hours a week, year round), you can expect to see a hand of 16 vs. 10 about 3500 times (3.5%). That’s actually the number 1 non-insurance situation. Any variation here has considerable value, simply because you’ll be using it relatively often. Conversely, you will receive 9, 9 vs. 2 only 43 times in that 100,000-hand sample, so the variation here is of little value, because you’ll rarely use it.
The frequency of hands allows us to prioritize the learning of basic strategy variations. One of the most important variations from basic strategy is the insurance bet. Since the dealer will show an Ace as an up card about 7.5% of the time, knowing when it’s profitable to take insurance is very important. If you are playing at a six deck game, insurance is worthwhile when the true count is +3 or higher. You should always make the insurance bet at that point, regardless of what cards you’re holding, since it has no relationship with your hand. The counting system has an ‘Insurance Efficiency’ of 80% which means that 8 out of 10 times you’ll be doing the right thing when you make an insurance bet based on the true count. As mentioned earlier, considerable value is gained by learning those variations which involve starting hands of 12-16 vs. any up card, since they are the hands you’ll see most often. In fact, fully 54% of all your hands will be ‘stiff’ at some point in the playing. This is a good place to make an important point, basic strategy variations apply not just to your starting hands, but also to hands composed of 3 or more cards. You will stand on Ace, 2, 10, 3 (total of 16) versus 10 if the count is 0 or higher, as well as a hand of 10, 6. Doubling (or not doubling) is next in importance and splitting/not splitting pairs is least important. I hope this gives you a basic understanding of how card counting works. If you would like to learn to count cards I give step by step details in my book. For a copy you can E mail me at TJ21Pro@ Gmail.com T.J. HORSIN' AROUND
It’s Trick or Treat in the Breeders’ Cup
eeneland is the venue, by the dates Brian Mulligan are Friday, Oct 30 & Saturday Halloween and quality will be in full force in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup. Granted, we are still weeks away from the action but let’s try to project how some of the principals are coming to the race with a winning edge. A total of 13 BC races will be run over the 2 days and there will surely be thrills, chills and probably a couple of spills. Unlike last year when Untapable was highly popular when winning the BC Distaff, the race this year is a bit more wide-open at this point. The great Zenyatta won this race in 2008 and only 2 horses have won this race twice, Bayakoa and Royal Delta. For 3-year-olds and older, the Distaff goes at 9 furlongs on dirt and if somehow the connections of Beholder decide not to go in the BC Classic, she would be the legitimate favorite in the Distaff. Untapable held off Iotapa and Don’t Tell Sophia in 2014 but she has changed her style this season. Last year she was comfortable sitting off the pace and kicking but she has only won once this year and she has been forwardly placed in defeat in her last couple of efforts. Sheer Drama is consistent as the day is long. She has not been out of the exact all year, brings tactical speed to the party, has earned over $1.3 million and won her last 2 races, both Grade 1s including the Personal Ensign with a 98 Beyer. Let’s take a look at the BC Juvenile Turf to try to get a clue as to what has happened in the past and what may happen the day before Halloween. With the Europeans that are likely to come over, this race kind of sets up for a foreigner in most years. Those horses are just further along in their grass experience and basically that is what they were born to do. Last year trainer Wesley Ward owned the Juvenile Turf. Ward proved he could get the set off the layoff and Hootenanny came back 2 months later and got an ideal 3-hole trip in the BC Juvenile Turf to win at 6-1. Ward also saddled Luck of the Kitten in the Juvenile Turf last year and that runner set the table for Hootenanny and ran second. Anything Ward saddles this year will be live. 18 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2015
Some handicappers love betting on juveniles as they can often just run as fast as they can and the best horses tends to win but add a factor like grass, to possible a new distance, a new surface and the toughest foes around and these are the issues that make the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile a very challenging test for all.
Over the years the Juvenile has been run to current form. Going into the last year favorites won 37% of the Juvenile and last year Texas Red took advantage of a hot pace and came from dead last to be the Juvenile victor at 13-1. The average Juvenile winner had paid over $17 before the surprise by Texas Red and note the Juvenile favorite has been in the exacta in the
If Acapulco shows up at Keeneland for this race, pay strict attention. She was dead short in her racing debut on dirt in May but then shipped across the pond to race in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot. Face it; Europeans that comes over for the Juvenile Fillies Turf must be given an extralong look. In 2013 Chriselliam was coming off a win in the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile at Newmarket before her stateside debut at Santa Anita and she didn’t disappoint. Respect anything that Chad Brown saddles for this race. He trained the inaugural winners of this race Maram and he also saddled last year’s heroine Lady Eli. In sports, the television networks salivate over a possible East/West showdown when it comes to the Finals, whether it would be in the NBA, in the World Series or even in the Super Bowl but racing fans also get pumped up for geographical rivalries and they could get it this year.
last 9 years. This year Nyquist will come to the BC Juvenile unbeaten and if he wins, he will be the leader in the clubhouse looking toward the 2016 Kentucky Derby. He took the Front Runner recently at Santa Anita but had to work but he made it. He chased the rank outsider Go Long early, took over at the top of the lane but had to work very hard to stave off Swipe to win by three quarters of a length. If Air Force Blue shows up in the Juvenile he will not be here for the frequent flyer miles. He won three of his first 4 races including a pair of Group 1s and is in the world-class hands of Aidan O’Brien. Give an edge to the youngsters that have tactical speed. The BC Mile generally attracts the best from Europe and America and this year will be the same. Karakontie will try to defend but it won’t be easy against top horses like Dutch Connection, King Kressa and The Pizza Man. continued on page 26

AZ LOTTERY NEWS SO LONG PORTLAND – HELLO ARIZONA
The Arizona Lottery announced on the first day of October that the $6.2 million THE PICK jackpot winning ticket (from the Sept 26th drawing) has been claimed by Frederick Hallwyler, a frequent Arizona visitor and Portland, Oregon resident, purchased the winning ticket at a Fry’s Food Store in Avondale, AZ. “Our Hall of Winners continues to grow. We are always excited when we award big prize checks like this to these lucky players,” said Tony Bouie, Executive Director of the Arizona Lottery.
Hallwyler plans to become a permanent Arizona resident in the very near future. This event may be why he plans to relocate. On Saturday, September 26, he put some money into a Lottery vending machine and purchased a few tickets. The machine showed that he had a $4 credit, so he purchased four Quick Picks for The Pick drawing that evening. Shortly after that Frederick returned to Portland. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Frederick remembered his tickets. First, he checked his Powerball ticket, but didn’t have any wins. Then, he checked his The Pick ticket. At first, Frederick thought he’d won $6,285 and was quite pleased. Then he scrolled further and saw a few more zeros. He said he felt like time had stopped when he realized he was the winner of the $6,285,618 jackpot. Frederick plans to invest his winnings. Not being familiar with the Arizona Lottery’s requirements, Frederick called the Lottery to find out what information and paperwork he would need
The Arizona Lottery announced on October 9th that the first instant winner of the new 5 Card Cash game was Thomas Valenti of Glendale. Thomas purchased his ticket on Tuesday October 6th and won $5,000 on the instant win portion of the game. Valenti said that a co-worker showed him some tickets for the new lottery game – so he went to the store, purchased a few tickets, and got lucky. In five days, ticket sales are over $123,000 and more than $51,000 amount has been claimed in prizes. “It’s a great day at the Arizona Lottery,” said Tony Bouie, Executive Director of the Arizona Lottery. “We are always looking for exciting new games for our players and this unique poker- themed game offers two different ways to win.”

to bring with him when he redeemed his ticket. He signed the ticket as soon as he realized it was a winner, but was still nervous carrying it in his wallet on his flight to Phoenix. Being an avid golfer, Frederick enjoys Arizona weather, particularly during the winter months. While here, he takes advantage of the various spectator sports, such as football, hockey, NASCAR, and basketball. Frederick comes here to relax, play golf, spend time with friends that live in Phoenix and, of course, buy Lottery tickets The Arizona Lottery operates entirely from the revenue it generates through the sale of its products; it doesn’t receive any General Fund dollars from the State. Proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets — nearly $3.4 million per week, fund a variety of state programs. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5.8 billion in prizes to players, more than $3 billion in net funding to the state and more than $686 million in commissions to retailers.
The $2 poker themed, 5 Card Cash ticket is the first ticket hybrid offered in Arizona. Players have a chance to win up to $5,000 instantly at the time of purchase and additional winnings of up to $100,000 during the nightly drawing. The instant win feature, as well as the nightly drawing, seems to be appealing to Lottery players. If an instant win prize is redeemed after the nightly drawing associated with the purchased ticket, the instant win prize and the draw win prizes will be automatically combined. Drawings take place Monday through Saturday at approximately 7:05 pm during daylight saving time and 8:05 pm the rest of the year. For more information about the new 5 Card Cash instant win and draw game, please visit ArizonaLottery.com. Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prize at an Arizona Lottery office or by mail.
TRAVEL EYE POPPING MEMORIES ON THE GRAND CANYON RAILWAY
STEAM IN THE 21ST CENTURY:
What an exciting adventure for a couple, the entire family or a group of friends – A trip on the Grand Canyon Railway! You’ve heard of it – now experience it for yourself. This one of a kind trip into the past is nearby – a day trip for sure, or you can spend the night at the hotel. The Grand Canyon Railway can be a significant part of the Grand Canyon experience. In addition to its one-night packages with a room at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams and roundtrip passage aboard the train, the Grand Canyon Railway also offers and multi-night packages that include overnight accommodations at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. By combining components such as lodging, train travel, some meals and a motor-coach tour at the park, these Grand Canyon Railway packages save travelers money. Plus, when the lodges at the South Rim are sold out – which happens often during the peak spring and summer travel months – booking a Grand Canyon Railway package is a good way to secure a room in the park.
The Grand Canyon Railway hosts popular Steam Train Weekends featuring the historic 4960, a steam locomotive powered by waste vegetable oil. And don’t forget about the History lesson! While on route to the Grand Canyon, train crew-members tell passengers about how train travel to the Grand Canyon evolved and helped to ensure that travel to the South Rim could be obtained affordably and comfortably by everyday Americans, not just the wealthy. This trip is really fun! Strolling musicians with a keen sense of humor instinctively play to their audiences in each car. Children and adults alike are typically delighted, and spontaneous singalongs are not uncommon. Passengers are also entertained by a raucous gunfight portrayed by enthusiastic actors prior to boarding and a train robbery on the return trip.
THE FRED HARVEY LUXURY DOME OBSERVATION CAR The Grand Canyon Railway is offering two exciting classes of passenger service: Pullman Class, a chance to ride round-trip in a vintage 1920’s Pullman car is available for a limited time. Also, introduced in 2012, is the Fred Harvey Luxury Dome. Named for the godfather of Western hospitality, this full length Luxury Dome Car combines the breathtaking panoramic views of the Observation Domes with the opulence of our Luxury Parlor Cars. Beginning in 2013, they opened their Observation Dome cars to Children ages 3-15 which allows a family even more options when planning their Grand Canyon experience.

SANTA COMES TO TOWN! During the holiday season, children are delighted by a nightly presentation of the popular book The Polar Express. The train travels what seems like a short distance all the way to the “North Pole,” where passengers hear a reading of the book and then get to meet Santa and his reindeer before making the return trip. Reservations for The Polar Express are available year-round. The Grand Canyon Railway also accepts reservations for optional tours including float trips, helicopter tours, jeep excursions and guided hiking tours. It is easy for travelers to make arrangements for an entire multiexperience vacation by booking directly with the Grand Canyon Railway online or by phone. Just call 1-800-843-8724 or go to: www.thetrain.com/makereservations and start your adventure!
HORSIN' AROUND THE BIG RACE This brings us to the granddaddy of them all – The Classic….and it should be a doozy. It will put the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37 years American Pharoah against the super mare Beholder. Beholder is going in super form having beaten the boys in the Pacific Classic and then tuning up for the Halloween tilt with an easy win the Grade 1 Zenyatta. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Honor Code has a brilliant late burst, Tonalist just defended his Jockey Club Gold Cup title successfully and if Aidan’s O’Brien’s star Gleneagles shows up, this will be one of the best Classics ever. Gleneagles, a son of Galileo, was 4th in his debut but he has finished first in his next 8 races. He was disqualified from one of those events but has won 5 Group 1s in his career. If he can adapt to the dirt, the

rest could be looking at minor awards. Gleneagles pedigree suggests he’ll take to the dirt. His dam was a double winner but more importantly, his dam is kin to Giant’s Causeway, who was a monster on
turf and also was beaten in a photo in the BC Classic. Remember, take your time, and don’t get caught up in the hype on BC Day and pay attention to pace and how the races figure to shape up – Good luck.

GAMING NEWS $1,000,000 SUMMER EXPLOSION ENDS WITH A BANG!
TUCSON CASINO AWARDED VENUE OF THE YEAR AT G2E!
Exciting game show finale at Casino del Sol All summer long, thousands of Tucsonans flocked to Casino Del Sol Resort to participate in the “Million Dollar Summer Explosion,” the casino’s fun and engaging gaming promotion that ran from May 26 to Sept. 7. If you happened to step foot on the property over the course of those 15 weeks, you were sure to encounter the “Sol Gold Mine,” an elaborate gold mine scene at the entrance of the casino, that made this promotion come to life. Participating players took a ride through the virtual Sol Gold Mine and pressed the game button to “detonate” the dynamite. This revealed free play, prizes, bandits, varmints, and potential bonus rounds. Additionally, all eligible guests received an entry into the Million Dollar Summer Explosion Game Show Finale. Drawings were held multiple times per day. Over 100 guests participated in the $1,000,000 Summer Explosion Game Show Finale on Sept 7th and after four rounds of elimination, the remaining six players battled for prizes ranging in value from $10,000 to $1,000,000. Players had a chance to steal prizes by rolling an oversized die that was labeled with the available winnings. Tucson resident and Club Sol Player’s Club member, Janet Guest was the big winner, taking home $25,000. “We always strive to provide the best, most creative promotions for our valued players,” said Steve Neely, chief marketing officer for Casino Del Sol Resort. “The Million Dollar Summer Explosion and the subsequent Game Show Finale really elevated our player’s expectations.” For more information about Casino Del Sol Resort and its gaming promotions, visit www. casinodelsolresort.com.
Casino Del Sol Resort’s AVA Amphitheater won top prize for Casino Arena/ Amphitheater of the Year by the Casino Entertainment Awards on Sept. 30 at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas. “Hard work, dedication, and commitment to entertainment programming helped secure this award for AVA Amphitheater,” said Kimberly Van Amburg CEO of Casino Del Sol. “Building a stellar experience is the reason we see hundreds of thousands of happy concert goers and guests each year. That will always remain our priority.” Established three years ago and sponsored by AEG Live, The Casino Entertainment Awards held at G2E are the only industry awards honoring outstanding artists, executives and venues in the casino entertainment industry. They were held this year at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. During the first two years of this award, prestigious gaming venues such as Mohegan Sun in Conn. and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas have been honored with this recognition. Hundreds of nominations were received, with AVA Amphitheater scoring the top prize as Casino Arena/ Amphitheater of the Year. The panel of judges, which includes industry professionals, voted on programming, reviews, ticket sales, and customer service. AVA outscored the competition in all aspects of the voting criteria. AVA at Casino Del Sol Resort has been entertaining Tucsonans for 14 years. From worldrenowned acts like Alan Jackson, who played the very first and sold-out show at AVA, to other legendary acts over the years including Kid Rock, Van Halen, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Ricky Martin, Santana, Luis Miguel, and many more, the goal at AVA has always been to bring the best and brightest to its award-winning stage in Tucson. “When we built AVA we wanted to create an experience that would stay with its visitors long after the show was over,” said Peter Yucupicio, chairman of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. “This award is very special to us because it signifies that we have accomplished that goal. We have continued to gain national recognition for consistently exceeding guests’ expectations, and will always invest in quality acts that we are proud to host. It is a very special award for our people and a credit to the team that has worked tirelessly to always put on a good show.” For more information about Casino Del So Resort’s AVA Amphitheater, or to buy tickets, visitcasinodelsolresort.com/tucson-entertainment or call 1-855-SOL-STAY (765-7829).

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR The Walk -
Philippe Petit grew up fascinated by high-wire walkers. He taught himself enough to impress one the greats who became his mentor and by teacher. He worked a street David Ramsey performer in Paris but was always looking for some place to hang his wire then he saw a picture of the then under construction twin towers of the World Trade Center, He knew he had to hang his wire between them and walk it. The planning and recruitment of his accomplices is treated like its a heist because what they are doing is illegal. They have to break in to both towers while they are under construction, hand the wire, stabilize it and then Philippe has to walk the wire - all before the police can stop them. The way the story is told is captivating and if you can see if in IMAX 3D you will be on the wire with him. Based on a true story “The Walk” is one of the best films of the year.

The next day he makes his way back to camp knowing everyone is gone. Mark is faced with the daunting task of finding a way to survive until the next Mars mission in 4 years and he has to figure out how to let NASA back on Earth know he is alive. As Watney Matt Damon is the movie but the supporting cast of NASA officials, scientists and other astronauts are perfectly cast. Me & Earl and the Dying Girl Greg spends most of his time making parody of classic movies with is co-worker Earl. They have been making them since grade school and what we get to see of them is hilarious. Greg has managed to navigate the treacherous environs of High School without being involved with or alienating any group. One day his mother asks him to spend some time with a girl from his school who has been diagnosed with cancer. At first he does so reluctantly but as they get to know each other he enjoys spending time with her. “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” is told with humor and heart making it one of the best films of the year.
Jurassic World
Move forward 22 years after the original “Jurassic Park” disaster and the new park is running perfectly. There are thousands of people visiting every day seeing the wondrous creatures. Claire runs the park trying to stay true to the original vision but is under pressure from corporate investors to keep attendance up. Her nephews arrive for a visit at her busiest time. Owen is a dinosaur handler who specializes in raptors and he is very good at it. Owen finds out there is a new secret dinosaur that is going to unveiled soon and he is uneasy about it. When he finds out it is a genetically modified monster he is terrified. Of course, it gets loose and Claire’s nephews are lost in its path. Owen and Claire must team up to find the kids and rescue the part. “Jurassic World” is basically the same story as the original but it has great characters and a lot of exciting action.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
In the opening battle The Avengers secure Loki’s scepter from HYDRA. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner use the scepter’s infinity stone to implement a program called Ultron, intended to protect the Earth from alien invaders. Naturally, the program interprets it’s programming differently and thinks it has to destroy the Avengers and then all of mankind. He has HYDRA’s genetically enhanced twins on his side and they create havoc within the Avengers that gives Ultron the advantage. The action is non-stop and even though we find out more about all the heroes it feels like the story is lacking something that all the action is supposed to make up. While not the best film in the Marvel Universe it is entertaining and moves the continuing storyline forward. If you are a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is a must see. joke of the month
A balding, white haired man walked into a jewelry store on a late Saturday night with a beautiful younger gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his new girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring The old man shook his head and said “NO, I’d like to see something a little more special” With that comment, the jeweler went to locked case behind him and brought over another ring. “Here’s a very special in white
gold with 1 large diamond and 6 smaller diamonds surrounding it, priced at $50,000 – but since this ring has been here in the case for almost a year, I will let you take it home for just $40,000.” The jeweler said with a smile. The young lady’s eye’s sparkled and her entire body was trembling with anticipation. After seeing the young girl’s reaction, the old man quickly said “We’ll take it!” The jeweler then asked, “How would you like to pay, credit card or cash?”
“By check” replied the old fellow. “I know you’ll need to be sure this check is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank on Monday to verify the funds, then please call me and we’ll come down and pick it up” The jeweler took his information and noticed on the old man’s driver’s license that today was the old fella’s 80th birthday. And said “Congratulations Leo on your birthday – see you Monday” On Monday morning the angry jeweler called the octogenarian and was livid “Listen old man, the
bank said you have less than one hundred dollars in your account!” “I know, I know…but let me tell you about the most fabulous weekend I’ve ever had in my life!” Remember – not all seniors are senile.
