gaming news Wild Horse Pass Guest wins $470,398 Jackpot
Lottery shows 14% increase in sales
Dateline; Friday November 13, 2015 – I doesn’t look like Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino guest Kelly P will ever be superstitious about anything from now on, because on “Friday the thirteenth” she won well over $400,000 while playing the popular IGT Triple Double Stars slot machine at the Chandler casino. The prize was triggered when Kelly hit the progressive jackpot on the popular slot machine, and the local Phoenix resident could not have been happier or felt luckier. “This is the best holiday gift I could have hoped for, I am beyond grateful this Thanksgiving season,” said Kelly. “We love to come to Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino and feel so lucky to have won such a large jackpot.” The Triple Double Stars progressive slot machines are some of the most popular on the floor at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino and their progressive jackpots routinely hit in the six figures. Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino is home to many of the most popular titles in slot machines offering 950 slots. In addition to the latest slots, Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino also hosts 75 table games, including a poker room with all the action you could ever imagine. There are 5 lounges with live entertainment, a nightclub, 1,400 seat showroom, plus a AAA four diamond hotel and a wide range of restaurants including the only Shula’s Steakhouse in Arizona. Gila River Gaming Enterprises, Inc. operates three Arizona casinos owned by the Gila River Indian Community, including Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, Lone Butte Casino, and Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino. All three casinos offer a combination of slots, table games, bingo, poker and hotels and are open 24/7 evert day. For more information, just call 1-800-946-4452, or on their website www.wingilariver.com
On November 5th the Arizona Lottery announced that sales exceeded $182.3 million during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2016, which ran from July 1, 2015 – Sept 30, 2015. Total sales of Arizona Lottery games are up nearly 14 percent over the same period in 2014. “An increase in sales is a win for everyone in the state,” said Arizona Lottery Executive Director Tony Bouie. “The Arizona Lottery gives back approximately 25 percent of its revenue to initiatives throughout Arizona, so this increase means additional funding for important programs.” The Arizona Lottery closed its first quarter having provided more than $39.3 million to the State General Fund, Healthy Arizona, the Mass Transit Fund, the Heritage Fund, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Department of Gaming, and Tribal College Dual Enrollment, among others. The increase in total sales correlates to a nearly 14 percent increase in beneficiary dollars being directed back to communities statewide. Lottery dollars support a wide variety of programs under six main pillars: Arts and Education, Community Enrichment, Economic Development, Environmental Conservation, Health and Human Services, and Public Safety. Programs throughout Arizona’s 15 counties are funded, in part, by Arizona Lottery beneficiary dollars. In addition to generating increased revenues, the Arizona Lottery paid out nearly $105 million to players from more than 8.3 million winning tickets during the first quarter. That an average of about 90,000 winners daily. Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prize at an Arizona Lottery office or by mail. Overall odds vary by game. All sales are final. Gambling Problem? A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
Don’t Drink
any years ago I taught high school math and required my algebra students to derive the quadratic formula. So, given by 2 Ax + Bx + C= 0, they had to solve for x. They were Linda Boyd expected to show each and every step along the way, including completing the square. Suffice it to say the word “derive” was far from their favorite and would elicit a collective groan when mentioned. I made a poster for my classroom that said “Don’t Drink and Derive”, a play on words (“derive” and “drive”), but they didn’t find that too funny either. (I do love and miss my former students but I suppose the generation gap is responsible for our divergent senses of humor.) .I was reminded of my poster some time later when I noticed VP players making some disastrous mistakes after having one too many. So I guess the Vegas casino owners were on to something when they encouraged players to drink up because it was on the house. Here are some issues that could impact your VP results if you’re chug-a-lugging during play. Mechanical Issues: Normally you’ll move to another machine when the buttons are sticky or the graphics are difficult to read. Once you’re inebriated you may not want to make the effort and just stay where you are, sometimes a costly decision. If the jackpot missed is big and the fault of the devise you have a shot at retrieving your payout by calling an attendant. If the fault is yours due to being sloppy with the buttons - the mechanic will know that’s the case and you have no chance of getting the money. Not Remembering Key Plays: Remembering key holds is hard enough when you’re sober, especially if you’re skilled at more than one game. For example, Full Pay Deuces Wild (FPDW, ER 100.7620%, variance 25.83462)may be preferable to Not-So-Ugly Deuces (NSUD, ER 99.7283%, variance 25.78027) but not available in the casino. You may know the strategy for both games but it’s not so easy if you’ve been drinking. One big and potentially costly difference between the holds on the two deuces games is with two pair, a frequent hand. In FPDW you hold just one pair, either one and with NSUD you hold both pairs. (That’s because FPDW returns 25 coins with a 5-coin wager for
10 ARIZONA PLAYER Septemtber 2015
and
“Derive”
4OAK, that’s four of a kinds, and NSUD returns 20 for the same bet. In addition FPDW returns 15 coins for a Full House and NSUD returns 20 coins.) It’s difficult enough to remember game strategy when switching games sober, but forget it when your brain is foggy. Busting the Bank: If you’re playing a positive game,(that means the ER is over 100% when you add the cash back) some pundits will tell you that you should continue playing as long as you’re alert. I think you should quit, even when it’s a positive situation once you’re so tired that you’re not having fun. Definitely your positive play will head south in a hurry when you’re drinking a lot. Progressive Adjustments: You will have to do some mental computations and make estimates when determining holds on growing progressives. If your game is 9/6DDB progressive, for example, you’ll have to make adjustments for the royal as it grows and for 4OAKs as well since many will be progressive on those as well. Doing the mental math necessary to make smart decisions will be almost impossible when you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Final Thoughts: The amount of time you’re willing to put into becoming a skilled VP player will vary, but choosing to be three sheets to the wind when laying your money down for any casino game that has a skill component is foolish. I’ve heard stories of blackjack players who had huge wins while drunk, but it makes a good story because it’s an anomaly and not the norm. Even if you’re just doing a rough count of 10-pointers versus the little cards (say just 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 6’s) without a side count of Aces, your head will spin if drinking. With VP it’s even more challenging because there are so many possible hold choices, 32 after each dealt hand. If you insist on drinking, don’t derive; instead, play the slots. Blackjack
Probabilities
D
id you know that the player hand of seventeen in the long run is a losing hand against every dealer “up” card except a six? To play a winning game of Blackjack it isimportant to play perfect basic strategy and keep your emotions out of the game. To accomplish this it is essential to have a realistic view of what to expect when playing. A player who gets mad will usually start playing hunches and gut feelings. Next he then over bets his bank roll, all with financialy disasterous results. If you understand the game it will help you to make good decisions and use common sense when playing. by TJ Jorgensen
by TJ Jorgensen
The following chart will show you how often you can expect the dealer to “bust” given each “up” card
Dealer Up Card 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 J,Q,K A
14 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2015
Dealer Bust % 35.30% 37.56% 40.28% 42.89% 42.08% 25.99% 23.86% 23.34% 21.43% 11.65%
It may come as a shock to most players that the dealer will make their hand more often than they will «bust» no matter what «up» card they are dealt. Players that are of the opinion that the dealer should break most of the time when showing a six or less have an unrealistic expectation of the game. When the dealer doesn›t break when showing a small «up» card - you should expect it. I have seen many players who hit hard 17 against a dealer «up» card of a ten. The dealer will only have another ten in the hole once every 3 times, however you can see by the following chart that you will bust 69% or about two out of three times when hitting 17 making it a losing proposition. This chart will help you understand about how often the player will «bust» by taking a hit for each hand. Probability of the Player «busting» on a hit
Hand Value 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 ≥11
% Bust If You Hit 100% 92% 85% 77% 69% 62% 58% 56% 39% 31% 0%
From this chart you can see why it is a «dumb» idea to double on hard twelve, or hit a hard seventeen. When hitting your hand of 14, 15, and 16, you can expect to bust over half of the time, so when you do accept it as part of the game, and move on to the next hand. Just remember it is unlikely you will win every hand, and accept the losses as part of the game. You will often times hear Blackjack Players complain that they are getting “ugly” or “bad” cards, but actually you will get more “decision” hands than “pat” hands. The following chart will show you how often in the long run you can expect to receive each hand. Probability of Player Hands
Two Card Count % Blackjack 17-20 2-16 No Bust TOTAL
Frequency 4.8% 30.0% 38.7% 26.5% 100.0%
By knowing the probabilities in blackjack it gives the player a better understanding of the game, and a «realistic» idea of what to expect. Many players get mad when they don›t get a pat hand every time, or when the dealer doesn›t bust when showing an up card of six or less. In reality this is what you should expect to happen when playing. Just remember that the word «anger» is one letter short of the word «danger» and that definitely applies to blackjack. Keep your emotions out of the game. Above all never get mad at the dealer, they are just dealing the cards, in fact most of them are «rooting» for the player. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for decades and is known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious “World Series of Blackjack”. travel GLENDALE GLITTERS IS BACK! Downtown Glendale “Sparkles, Shines & Glitters” as Arizona’s Largest Free Holiday Display has returned Glendale’s Holiday Lighting Season draws over 250,000 visitors every year to this West Valley community. There can’t be anything more synonymous with the magic of holiday lights in the Valley of the Sun than Glendale Glitters. Glendale’s award-winning holiday festival has become a family tradition across the valley and state. This award-winning festival, “Glendale Glitters” was recognized by CBSnews.com as in 2014 as one of the top five holiday light displays in the country. The city of Glendale was selected not only for the Glendale Glitters display, but also for neighborhood and business participation throughout the city. Glendale is in good company; the other cities on the list are San Diego, Portland, OR, Arlington, TX and Somerville, MA, all cities and neighborhoods that attract thousands of people in their communities with their impressive lights.
The seven-week long holiday light display comes to its conclusion with the Glendale Glitter & Glow Block Party on January 9th, when the 1.5 million lights are combined with 20 glowing hot air

balloons and a variety of musical entertainment, which brings out more than 75,000 people in its final evening. This year the annual celebration kicks off on Fri and Sat Nov 27 & 28 from 5pm to 10pm each evening.
The stunning display of 1.5 million LED lights will illuminate sixteen blocks of Historic Downtown Glendale, making it the largest free holiday light display in Arizona. Free admission and free shuttles make this beloved event family friendly. Visitors of all ages will delight in holiday entertainment, delectable food, hand-crafted holiday gifts, a children’s winter wonderland and petting zoo, shopping and of course everyone’s favorite person this time of year – Santa Claus. The always-entertaining stage show will feature special honored guests to help flip on the lights, in the countdown lighting ceremony on Friday evening, Nov. 27 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Opening weekend, free parking shuttles are provided from Glendale Community College (last shuttle will leave downtown Glendale at 10:15). Shuttles pick up from the northeast parking lots of
the college, accessing from 59th Avenue and Vogel. In addition, street parking in and around the downtown is free, but event attendees will have the option of paying for preferred parking in the two downtown garages, both of which are accessible from 59th Avenue and Glenn Drive. The festivities continue with more events in downtown Glendale, every Friday and Saturday through December. 19, from 6-10 p.m. each evening · Dec. 4-5: Glendale’s Jingle Bell Rockin’ Nights · Dec. 11-12: Glendale’s Winter Wonderland Weekend · Dec.18-19: Glendale’s Spirit of Giving Weekend The glittering magic of Glendale’s holiday display remains lit nightly through January. 9, from 5-11 p.m. each evening. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Spectre Bond is back and while on a secret mission for the late “M” he discovers the organization that has been behind all his troubles tying all four Daniel Craig Bond movies together in one nice by package. Unfortunately, while it’s David Ramsey a pretty package it is long and slow with more than a few plot holes. While better than “Skyfall” it is nowhere near as good as “Casino Royale.” I hope “Spectre” is not Craig’s last appearance as Bond.

Terminator Genisys
John Connor saves a young Kyle Reese from a terminator, mentors him and then sends him back in time to save him mother, Sarah Connor. Stop me if you have heard this before - but wait maybe you haven’t. When Kyle arrives in 1984 things are not as he expected them to be - or as we remember them from the original movie. The timeline has been changed so when Kyle is rescued by Sarah and the original Terminator he is just a surprised as we are. Everything is different including the year that Judgment Day takes place. It’s great to see Arnie back in his familiar role but the story has too many holes to be more than just a fun popcorn movie with lots of action.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E
Spotlight When a new editor arrives at the Boston Globe he asks its investigative division, known as Spotlight, to look into the possible connection between two priests molesting children. The investigation uncovers a large worldwide conspiracy and rocks the foundation of one of the most powerful institutions in the world. The cast is outstanding as is the storytelling. Based on the true story “Spotlight” is a compelling story as well as a cautionary tale. One of the best films of the year.
It’s the height of the cold war. Napoleon Solo is the CIA’s top agent and his forced to work with his nemesis Russian agent Illya Kuryakin to stop a threat to the entire world. They have been enemies for so long that working together does not come easily. While not stellar “The Man From U. N. C. L. E.” is an amusing and action packed adaptation of the 60’s TV series.
The Dick Van Dyke Show Complete Series Rob Petrie is the hilarious head writer for a TV variety show, his wife Laura is anything but a typical housewife. Rob’s boss is a narcissistic nut and his co-writers are slightly off kilter. The cast is one of the best ever put together and the writing is stellar. To say this show is funny is not giving it justice. Simply put “The Dick Van Dyke Show” is the best sit-com ever on television. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. joke of the month Some random thoughts
Not what he was expecting Late one night a police officer pulled over a driver and informed him that because he signaled correctly and made a proper turn and was wearing his seat belt, he had just won a good driver safety award of $200 from the Department of Public Safety. As the officer handed him the check, the officer asked “What are you going to do with the prize money?”
buy some car insurance and pay off some old speeding tickets.” Just then his wife, who was seated next to him, chimed in, “Officer, don’t listen to him. He’s a real smart ass when he drinks too much” The commotion woke up the drunk in the back seat, who when seeing the cop, blurted out, “Officer, believe me, I had no idea this was a stolen car.”
The man smiled and responded, “I guess I’ll
Atheism is obviously a non-prophet organization My mechanic is addicted to brake fluid, but he says he can stop anytime he wants. It’s hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally. They all laughed when I said I wanted to be a comedian. Well, they’re not laughing now. Today I saw a Buddhist walk up to a hotdog stand and say, “Make me one with everything.”
