Road”
“When you come to a fork in the road take it” Yogi Berra, 1925-2015
hen I was in college I dated a guy named Yogi Baer (really George but everyone called him Yogi). Cool name, cool guy-just like the famous Yankee catcher who passed away Sept 22, 2015. When Yogi came up with confusing but humorous directions they warranted a laugh. Not so much, however, in the game of video poker (VP) when blurry directions can cost you money. Accurate VP play requires correct holds after the deal according to Zamzow (wrote WinPoker software) or my strategy cards (free in the back of my book, “The Video poker Edge”). Decision Time: There’s nothing in the world you can do to influence the cards that are dealt in spite of what anybody says. In fact, given a 52 card deck (no jokers) and dealing five cards, there are a whopping 2,598,960 possible dealt hand possibilities. Once they are dealt there are exactly 32 hold options, including holding all or holding no cards. The holds you choose will determine whether you get the theoretical ER (expected return) or less over the long run. The highest possible ER over time is accomplished only by playing the game you’ve selected computer-perfect. In the short-run anything is possible, including being dealt a royal flush or playing inaccurately and still winning. Nobody, however, outruns the odds over time. Most experts consider that to be 5 or 6 royal cycles, with a royal cycle being approximately 40,000 hands. The longer you play, combining all sessions for frequent players, the more your odds will resemble statistical expectations. Home Practice: You’d never be allowed to play baseball for the Yankees or any other team, including for your high school, if you hadn’t demonstrated your skills during practice. If you use WinPoker tutorial software you have four learning modes to choose from for each game. I always select “warn” which does just that when I choose statistically incorrect cards. The software also shows you how much it will cost per hour on average if you continue with this particular incorrect hold. Remember you have 32 choices after the deal and some of the incorrect holds are worse than others. I can play several VP games almost perfect, but if those exact games aren’t available in Arizona casinos then I must learn to play the ones they offer. by Linda Boyd
in the
Anomalies: A big problem with statistics is that nobody can use them to predict what cards will be dealt or drawn with certainty. They simply are the best tool available and indicate likelihood only. Players want a crystal ball and will sometimes cite “hunches” after or even prior to the hand. Before the deal, for example, your odds of getting a flush in 9/6DDB are 1 in 88 regardless of whether or not you had a flush in the previous hand. Sometimes a player will recount a story that defies the odds which is what makes it such a great story. For example, they’ll tell you that they got back-to-back royals (I once had them that way and both in the same suit) but this is an anomaly and can not be used to direct play. Insufficient Data: If you think basing play on data you collect from one or two or even ten sessions has any validity, then think again. Even if you play 800 hands per hour for four hours and collect the data for ten sessions you do not have enough information to be sufficiently relevant. That would amount to only 3,200 hands times 10 sessions or 32,000 hands in total. That’s less than a single royal cycle of 40,000 hands and you would need at least 5 cycles or 200,000 hands for any meaning. Even 200,000 hands is negligible next to computer simulations that can run 2 million or more hands played statistically accurately and deliver reliable feedback. In fact, the more hands played computer correctly the closer results match the statistical expectations. With a few million hands the data is almost exact--that’s powerful proof of the math. So using anecdotal information to justify incorrect holds is meaningless and should be avoided. Final Thoughts: If you’re taking a Sunday drive along Arizona’s beautiful highways and byways then follow Yogi’s advice--when you come to a fork in the road take it. If you’re playing VP, however, the fork has 32 separate roads and you must get the exact one to maximize the monetary outcome. Ace/7

(The most misplayed hand in Blackjack)
by TJ Jorgensen
W
hat if I offered you the proposition that you could play Blackjack and would have eighteen every hand, plus you could bet whatever amount you wanted – Would you take that bet? Most players think that 18 is a strong hand and are happy to have it. However in the long run, the hand of 18 will lose .05% of all money wagered, making it a negative expectation hand. It’s no wonder that it seems no matter how skilled a player is, they always misplay the hand of 18 when it’s made up of Ace/seven. If you play basic strategy it will tell you that on Ace - 7 you should stand when the dealer shows a 2, 7, or 8. But, Double Down when the dealer shows a 3-6 and hit when the dealers up card is a 9, 10 or Ace. However many players deviate from basic strategy because it doesn’t seem like the correct play. For example, with Ace/7 against a dealer up card of a 6, Basic Strategy tells you to double down. It is true that if you stand you will win more hands than if you double down, after all 18 is a strong hand against a dealer up card of a 6. It is also true that if you double down you can only improve the hand with a 2, 3, or an Ace, and if you receive a 10 it doesn’t help or hurt the hand but

you potentially take the dealers bust card. If you get a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 it makes the hand worse. If you double down your Ace/7 and get a 5 you find yourself with the hand of 13 with twice as much money bet, and this doesn’t seem right to many players. If you double down Ace/7 you will make it worse about 50% of the time and will lose more hands because of this. Yet by doubling the amount of your bet with Ace/7 vs a dealer up card of a 6 you will win 10% more money in the long run than if you were to stand. So essentially you will win less hands, but win more money, and which would you rather have? If you have Ace- 7 against a dealer’s up card of a 10 and stand, you will lose more money than you If you do the math, basic strategy is the right will win. way to play Ace/7 in the long run. I hope to see you If you hit instead of standing you will also lose at the tables playing this hand correctly. more money than you will win, just not as much. Every year about 100 people attend this event, including treatment providers from across the state alongside problem gamblers at various stages of recovery, members of the gaming industry, and other members of the behavioral health community. “We are excited to have two internationally recognized speakers who will bring coast to coast insights on recovery and emerging treatments. Our attendees will walk away with in-depth knowledge of how families are impacted by gambling addictions and co-occurring disorders,” said Larissa Pixler, Program Director of the Office of Problem Gambling. Dr. Claudia Black and Mr. Frank Kros are celebrated authors who work closely with families dealing with the effects of addiction. Combined they offer more than 50-years of experience in treatment and recovery focused especially on the effects addiction has on children and young adults.

travel TRAVEL – Back in Time to the 16th Century! Looking for an uplifting good time? It’s easy! Take a trip Back in Time to the wildly popular and entertaining Arizona Renaissance Festival. Today’s audience want to be more then spectators. They want to interact and be surrounded by entertainment as they seek to escape the everyday world. This Festival transports visitors to an European style fair filled with an agreeable rabble of knights, rogues, royalty and craftsmen, all roaming throughout a 30-acre village filled with delectable sights and sounds tantalizing the senses. Explore 200 charming craft shops, 13 stages of non-stop entertainment, an arena for full-contact armored jousting, a living fountain, kitchens, pubs, and people powered games and rides. All the Festival is a stage with a cast featuring more than 2,000 brightly costumed actors, dancers, mermaids, acrobats and musicians. These are the amazing people who populate this bustling event to ensure a good time for the 265,000 visitors who mingle into the endlessly wacky and unpredictable merriment and mayhem. At the Renaissance Festival, the audience is a special guest in another place and time. The Renaissance Festival experience is meeting and interacting with a variety of colorful characters, shopping for unique arts and crafts, and taking in a selection of over 150 shows every event day. Some new shows this year include “Sea Fairies” The Living Mermaids, Captain Francis Drake, The Angels (Heroines in Disguise) and others , plus all your favorites like; The Ded Bob Show, Don Juan & Miguel, The Tortuga Twins and dozens more! There is a great variety of food for feasting, and a bevy of beverages including Medieval Margaritas, Da Vinci Coladas, Dukes of Daiquiri, wine, honey mead, beers and ales, along with soft drinks and lemonade.
A popular attraction at the Festival are the live Jousting Tournaments held three times daily in the 5,000 seat arena, complete with knights on charging horses, clanging weapons and a great deal of braggadocio. The 16th century Festival is home to many popular traditions including chomping down on a giant roasted turkey leg, adding to your collection of drinking vessels or hair adornments as well as battling wits with the village idiot where he will insult you as you walk by…now, you can pelt him with tomatoes for a small fee, BUT don’t miss or you will be ridiculed in front of friends and strangers. It’s good clean, or rather messy fun! Create YOUR own tradition at this annual event. The Faire features demonstrations of time honored crafts such as weaving, jewelry making, glass blowing, blacksmithing and pottery throwing. Shopping is fun and if you are looking for a unique gift; you shall surely find it at this bustling marketplace. A most special event within this giant event is The Pleasure Feast. This is a one and a half hour, five courses Medieval Feast with live music and comedy entertainment, all you can eat and drink, plus festival souvenir. With limited seating twice daily, advance feast reservations are recommended. Don’t miss this time travel experience—see thee at the Faire. Huzzah! The 28th Annual Arizona Renaissance Festival is just east of Apache Junction on US Highway 60. The faire begins at 10 am every Sat & Sun thru March 27.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Deadpool Former Special Forces op turned mercenary, Wade Wilson, is diagnosed with terminal cancer and agrees to under a rogue treatment to beat it. He is cured but turned into a disfigured mutant with incredible healing powers. by He designs a special suit and adopts David Ramsey the name Deadpool , but he is still the wisecracking, foul-mouthed ‘merc with a mouth’. This is the first R-Rated Marvel film and it earns that rating. It is true to the comic, very funny from the opening credits to the very end and part of the ‘X-Men’ universe. Ryan Reynolds has been trying to get this movie made for years. I am glad he finally got it done. Everything about Deadpool is perfect.

Spotlight
When a new editor arrives at the Boston Globe he asks its investigative division, known as “Spotlight”, to look into the possible connection between two stories about priests molesting children. The investigation uncovers a large worldwide conspiracy and rocks the foundation of one of the most powerful institutions in the world as well as the very foundation of the city. The cast is outstanding as is the storytelling. Based on the true story “Spotlight” is a compelling story as well as a cautionary tale.
Black Mass
Hail, Caesar! Eddie Mannix runs a Hollywood studio in the 50s and its typical day. The biggest part of this job is keeping the stars in line and keep the cameras rolling. Today he has to keep a starlet from shooting racy pictures, convince a cowboy star he can act in a drawing room drama, keep the unwed pregnancy of a ‘virginal ‘ starlet from being a scandal and the studio’s biggest star is kidnapped - all while keeping a secret of his own. If they had stayed with Mannix it might have worked but the story has too many side plots that don’t go anywhere. Despite its all-star cast Hail, Caesar! is one of the rare times the Coen Brothers have missed the mark.
This is the true story of Boston mobster “Whitey” Bulger and his childhood friend, who grew up to be an FBI agent. Bulger is the most violent criminal in South Boston when he is offered a deal by his friend. If he gives them information on the mob from the Northside moving in on him the FBI will get rid of them and he’ll get the protection of the FBI. It works well for Whitey as he expands his criminal empire but when the new federal prosecutor starts asking questions things start to fall apart. A great cast brings the story to life in a riving manner.
Spectre
Bond is back and while on a secret mission for the late “M” he discovers the organization that has been behind all his troubles tying all four Daniel Craig Bond movies together in one nice package. Unfortunately, while it’s a pretty package it is long and slow with more than a few plot holes. While better than “Skyfall” it is nowhere near as good as “Casino Royale.” I hope “Spectre” is not Craig’s last appearance as Bond.” David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. Joke page, ASTROLOGY, Casino directory Was this a confession?
jokes of the month
Penance or not
A pious young woman went to Confession. Upon entering the confessional, she said, “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.” The priest said, “Confess your sins and be forgiven.” The woman said, “Last night my boyfriend made mad passionate love to me seven times.” The priest thought long and hard and then said “Squeeze two lemons into a glass and drink the juice.” The young woman asked, “Will this cleanse me of my sins?” “No” replied the priest,” but it will wipe that smile off of your face.”
An old man walks into a confessional and says “Hello Father, I am 75 years old, have a wonderful wife of 50 years, with many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren “Yes”, said the priest, “What’s the problem?” The old man took a deep breath and said “yesterday, I picked up two college girls, hitchhiking - We went to their apartment where I had sex with both of them” The Priest remarked “Are you sorry for your sins?” The old man shook his head and replied “What sins?” Priest: ‘What kind of a Catholic are you?’ Old man replied “I’m Jewish” The bewildered Priest remarked “Why are you telling me all this?” Old man smiled and said “I’m 78 years old .... I’m telling everybody.”
