A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
Pulling Back The Curtain
emember the recent brouhaha between Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan after she learned her co-host was leaving? She had a major meltdown followed by several unschedby Linda Boyd uled days off and he left several months before he was supposed to. Once the curtain opened on “Live with Kelly and Michael!” they were both sunshine and lollypops, but many sure wanted to be a fly on the wall once the curtains closed. Unlike the dust-up between Kelly and Michael video poker players can get a peek at what really goes on between closed doors in the casino business. Some of the scuttlebutt you’ve heard is true while other grapevine talk is just nonsense. One reason is that there are regulations within the gaming industry, although there are jurisdiction differences. All Arizona casinos abide by these rules although you may find other states are not bound by them. For example, Arizona requires a random number generator (RNG) within every device but some states allow video lottery terminals (VLT’s) and it might be just like playing a lottery scratch ticket-- no skill required. Complete details are in my book “The Video Poker Edge”, available at Amazon.com, Square One Publishers or any major book store. Pay Tables: If you’re playing a traditional slot there’s no possible way of knowing the ER (expected return) by looking at the pay table. That’s because each machine has a chip ordered by the casino and within the jurisdiction’s maximum/minimum parameters that resides within. So one China Shores slot could have an 80% ER while the identical machine right next to it could have a 95% ER - That’s not to say they won’t both have losing or winning streaks but the fact that they have identical looking pay tables is irrelevant; in the long run the chip within determines the return. On the other hand, with video poker (VP) the pay table alone determines the long term ER and you can learn the exact percentage by looking at the tables in my book (removable and can be brought to the casino) or by entering the data on tutorial software. Keep in mind the ER assumes computer accurate play--easy if you use my free strategy cards (in my book) or practice on the software at home.
6 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2016
Lowering Returns During Peak Times: Somehow a rumor that casinos lower the ER during peak times, like weekends and holidays, grew wings. This information is totally incorrect although some players swear by it. Part of the reason is that we all have selective memories and both good and rotten outcomes are memorable. Another cause for this erroneous idea is when it’s crowded the most popular machines are taken and in VP that means the machines with the best pay schedules. Over time you’ll do better on 9/6JOB than 8/5JOB although you’re likely to find both in the same casino. Rigged Promotions: A while back, I was feeling a bit grouchy about not being called during a promotional event as I noticed the same guy was called during two consecutive drawings. It took a lot of points to earn each ticket and I had over two hundred entries. I was standing next to this same guy in line for a VIP event and asked him how many tickets he had in the drawing--a jaw-dropping 3,700 tickets! So I shut up and told him to enjoy the cash and the cruise. Promotions are not rigged but your equity is based on your coin-in so the more you play the more drawing tickets you earn. That’s truly quite fair. Slot Cards Change Outcomes: If I’ve heard it once I’ve heard it 100 times and seen it as well. That’s people claiming you won’t win as much with your player’s card inserted or that you have to pull the card out sometimes “so the machine thinks you’re a different person”. Pure hogwash! There’s absolutely no connection between the RNG and the card slot so playing without a card is just foolish. Final Thoughts: I can still remember when Toto pulled back the green curtain in the Wizard of Oz to reveal a plain old man and nothing at all magical. The same is true with what’s behind the curtain at plays, concerts and in your local casino as well. The most reasonable and logical explanation is usually accurate; guess Kelly and Michael really were glad to part ways as well! Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern & Midwest Gaming”, and the latest edition of “American Casino Guide”. You can see her videos on YouTube or view them on American Casino Guide’s web site and her radio interviews are on iTunes. Boyd’s book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and strategy cards for the most popular games. The latest edition is available at 1-877-900-BOOK, book stores, amazon.com, bookstores, and now on Kindle Square One Publishers www.squareonepublishers.com

The expansion will include a spa, a conference center with multi-use ballroom space, a parking garage, additional restaurants and more than 200 additional rooms. “The Ak-Chin Indian Community is excited about this expansion that will provide our guests and visitors with the high-quality hospitality and entertainment that they have come to expect here at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino,” said Chairman Miguel. The community lies 35 miles south of Phoenix in the northwestern part of Pinal County. Ak-Chin is an O’odham word translated to mean “mouth of the wash” or “place where the wash loses itself in the sand or ground.” Ak-Chin has an enrollment of more than 1,022 tribal members and a land base of just over 22,000 acres. MERCURY FAN WINS $777 DURING “LUCKY 7’S SHOOTOUT” The prize was secured with a free throw! Casino Arizona, an enterprise of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), has added Taneesa Congdon to its Lucky 7’s Shootout winner circle. The Phoenix resident stepped on Talking Stick Resort Arena’s court on July 1 and made a free throw shot during the Phoenix Mercury-New York Liberty game. The winning shot earned Congdon $777 as part of Casino Arizona’s Lucky 7’s Shootout, an on-court promotion that allows hopefuls to showcase their basketball skills for a cash prize. “I was excited to be chosen for the opportunity to play in Casino Arizona’s Lucky 7’s Shootout,” said Congdon. “I feel it was the opportunity of a lifetime and I had a blast! Go Mercury!” Casino Arizona’s Lucky 7’s Shootout is offered every Friday and Saturday during the Phoenix Mercury home games. Fans are randomly selected from the audience and are given the option to shoot a free throw for a payout of $777, a three-point shot for $7,777 or a half-court

shot for $77,777. Feeling confident in her free throw ability, Congdon chose to shoot from the free throw line. She is currently planning her 2017 wedding and intends on using the funds for her upcoming nuptials. “Our Lucky 7’s Shootout is a fan favorite and we love partnering with the Phoenix Mercury to be able to offer this fun opportunity to sports fans,” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations at Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort. “We are happy that Congdon was selected and won, helping bring her special day to fruition” Video of the winning shot can be viewed at https://www.dropbox. com/s/62czkd8gldd06x0/Lucky%20 7%20shootout%200701.mov?dl=0 To learn more information about Casino Arizona or the Lucky 7’s Shootout, visit www.casinoarizona.com. TJ’s Blackjack corner
Overcoming the Luck Factor
f you were to enter a Blackjack Tournament that has odds of getting paid at 25 to 1, and are inexperienced, in theory, by luck alone you would finish in the money once every 25 tries. This doesn’t sound very encouraging, however if the hostby TJ by Jorgensen TJ Jorgensen ing casino adds money to the prize pool, it makes it a positive value event and very attractive. Here’s why: Let’s say 125 players pay $60 each to enter a tournament = $ 7,500 Then factor in the Casino adds $10,000 to the prize pool = $10,000 Total Prize money = $17,500 Five players will get paid making the average payout = $ 3,500 In theory, you will get in the money 1 in 25 tournaments – It would cost you $ 1500 in entry fees to play 25 times. Since the average payout is $3500 it makes this a positive value event. Based on luck alone you will show a profit of $2000 every 25 tournaments. It’s not a question of if you will come out ahead, just when. So when you see an event like this you should always play. By playing a lot of tournaments you start to develop skills to over-come the luck factor to some degree. Personally I get in the money in Tournaments about once every four tries. So it is definitely possible to improve your chances of getting paid by becoming a skilled player. To help you become a tournament player with skills, here is a little move you can put into your bag of tricks. This scenario should get you thinking about strategy; try to figure out the best play for this situation. It’s the final hand and there are only two players left. Only one player advances to the next round, and betting limits are $25 min, $2500 max. You have to bet first.
16 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2016
(You) Player A have $5,000 bet $2,500 dealt 8-2 Player B has $5,500 bet $2,500 dealt 10-10 Dealer has a 6 up Since Player B has matched your bet, if you both win or both lose one bet, Player B wins the round. If you double down and catch a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, Player B can split his 10s and it doesn’t matter what cards he draws he will still have the high and low covered. It would seem that unless you win while player B pushes or loses (there is only about a 14% chance of that occurring), you will be eliminated. So what would you do to give yourself the best chance at winning? Consider this, since Player B can only split for an equal amount, ($2500) if you double for less than $1975 you can take away either the high or the low from Player B. You force player B to make a choice, if he stands on 20 and the dealer breaks you win with your double down no matter what card you draw. If Player B Splits and the dealer breaks then Player B would win, but you would win if the Dealer beats you both. By doubling for less you have increased your chances of winning the round from 14% to about 44%. Not a bad increase in win odds by just playing smart. If you would like to know more about tournament strategy or how to play a better Blackjack – go to my free website at freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner Or get my E book “Playing Winning Blackjack” on my website.

gaming news Casino Del Sol unveils new Zeboz Bar!
Located inside Tucson’s premier entertainment destination, Zeboz is the bar in the center of the action at Casino Del Sol Resort and it just got a whole new look. Over the course of the last three months, the existing bar in the middle of the Piazza gaming area was demolished and rebuilt. The newly renovated Zeboz is bigger, brighter, and has more to offer than the original. Measuring in at more than 2,700 square feet, the bar is approximately 450 square feet larger than before, and can now accommodate more than 125 guests. The redesign of Zeboz goes hand-in-hand with Casino Del Sol’s Mediterraneanthemed property, with rustic ironwork and patterned terrazzo tiling. Zeboz is now much more open, with an exposed trellis that reveals the domed perpetual daytime sky mural on the ceiling. A rectangular wrap-around bar has been built, allowing guests to view the gaming excitement from every angle. Additionally, 17 bar top gaming machines have been installed, so customers can now enjoy a beer, wine or cocktail while playing a variety of keno and video poker games. These machines accept Club Sol player’s cards and accumulate points, just like the machines on the surrounding casino floor. For guests who prefer more intimate seating, the bar now boasts four booths, one in each corner of the raised platform. “Zeboz occupies premium space in the casino, and this new look truly enhances the ambiance of the property,” said Casino Del Sol Resort’s CEO, Kimberly Van Amburg. “These improvements will allow us to provide the elevated experience that our valued guests have come to expect from us.” Casino Del Sol’s Property Mixologist, Aaron DeFeo, is developing a new cocktail menu for Zeboz that will feature several specialty drinks, which will roll out soon. The new Zeboz is open from 8am till.-2am daily. For more information about Casino Del Sol’s bars and restaurants, visit www.CasinoDelSol.com or call 1-855-SOL-STAY (765-7829).

travel Coronado National Forest – Miller Peak Wilderness Area By Phil Scudella The Sierra Vista Recreational Area incorporates several mountain ranges which are separated by rolling hills and some of the Southwest’s most extensive grasslands. The area includes the Huachuca, Patagonia and Whetstone Mountains. These areas were once the focus of extensive mining activity and their canyons and ridges are rich in the history of those colorful days. An extensive network of trails provides access to the Huachuca Mountains and to the 20,190 acre Miller Peak Wilderness. In nearby Ramsey Canyon, where miners once sluiced, blasted and tunneled for gold and silver, birdwatchers have found a gentler bonanza. A number of scenic drives cross the area’s broad grasslands, and anglers find their reward in Parker Canyon Lake where stocked trout, as well as other species, challenge fishermen Miller Peak Named for the highest peak in the Huachuca Mountains, and is the highest and southernmost peak in the United States. This Wilderness encompasses 20,190 acres and was established in 1984.
26 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2016
The Miller Peak Wilderness lies between the city of Sierra Vista and the Mexican border in the southern half of the Huachuca Mountains. The Miller Peak Wilderness is a land of sheer cliffs, soaring summits and deep canyons. In these diverse life-zones lives an amazing variety of wildlife including over 170 species of birds (14 species of hummingbirds). Seventy-eight species of mammals have been observed in the Huachuca’s including coatimundi, javelina, black bear and mountain lion. Over 60 species of reptiles also can be found here. Seventeenth-century Spanish Captain Juan Mateo Manje referred to these mountains in his expedition journal as Sierra de Huachuca, or Huachuca Mountains. Many sheer cliffs rise hundreds of feet above the canyon floors. At least 21 trails lead through the Wilderness from its eastern, western, and southern boundaries. The Arizona Trail traverses this wilderness before reaching its southern terminus at the U.S./Mexican border. From the Crest Trail (11 miles) one can reach the top of Miller Peak. Throughout the area, visitors may encounter evidence of the region’s bygone mining and ranching days. Trails here climb from 5,200 feet to as high as 9,466 feet at the apex of Miller Peak, and offer some of the most dramatic views in the Southwest. The Huachuca’s are rich in history. These canyons, cliffs, and forests are littered with the remains of various late nineteenth- and early twentiethcentury mining booms that all eventually went bust. Today, the gold rush has been replaced by a recreation rush that’s adding a new chapter to the history of the Miller Peak Wilderness.
travel
This area is an exciting adventure where you could spend weeks and not come close to seeing all that you would like to that would include; Historic Fort Huachuca, Bisbee, Tombstone, the Kartcher Caverns, Arizona’s famous wineries in Elgin and Sonoita. You’ll find terrific Bed and Breakfast places to stay, Hotels everywhere including a couple that are said to be haunted.
Enjoy great food throughout entire Southern Arizona including “Papa’s 50’s Diner” in Sierra Vista. Now let me mention this, in all of the years of including articles of out of the way unique places to grab a meal while you were traveling, I have never once mentioned my brother Richard’s authentic 50’s diner in Sierra Vista that he built nearly 20 years ago. I should have – since you will find a great menu covering breakfast, lunch and dinners including his wife Marie Christine’s family recipes for some terrific Italian dishes. Their motto: “Breakfast is served around the clock till the doors are locked” You could spend an hour looking at the memorabilia that he has collected that will transport you back to the 50’s & 60’s While you’re there you might even see a regular customer that looks very much like rock and roll’s original icon. Encourage him and he may sing to you as he does on the outdoor patio every Sunday mid-day!

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates Brothers have ruined many family events in the past with their wild party ways, now their sister is getting married in Hawaii. She and their parents have made it mandatory they bring dates feeling that a couple of nice girls will by keep them under control. They place and ad David Ramsey that goes viral ending up on TV. They get hundreds of responses but two girls stand-out. The brothers think are perfect and so does their family. What they don›t know is they are only acting like nice girls to get the free trip to Hawaii. Will the wedding survive? While not brilliantly written or acted it "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" is funny with hilarious moments. Remember its R rated for a few reasons and have fun at the matinee.
David’s Video Details Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
After what happened the last time we saw Superman, Batman is concerned that he is a threat to mankind and decides to take matters into his own hands. Add in Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman and a super-monster and it is a big test for Superman. A sequel to "Man of Steel" it has the same problems as that film - it is too long, the fights go on until you don›t care anymore, it isn›t true to the comics and is over stylized. The cast is good but Ben Affleck is outstanding as an aging Batman. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" sets up the coming "Justice League" movies that I can only hope are better.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant
Cafe Society Set in the 1930s, Bobby moves from the Bronx to Hollywood hoping for work for his Uncle Phil, a big time theatrical agent. He falls in love with his Uncle›s secretary but she has a boyfriend, then things get complicated. Meanwhile, back in the Bronx his older brother buys a nightclub. When Bobby moves back he takes over managing the club and it becomes the talk of the town. The often very funny story of true love and compromise is very well done with a great cast. The only drawback is the pointless and often annoying narration. "Cafe Society", while not Woody Allen›s best, is worth seeing.
Tris and Four must escape and go beyond the wall that surrounds Chicago to discover the truth of their world. And, of course, Evelyn is still after them. The pacing is tedious, the story is dull and pointless. What a waste of a talented cast. After seeing this third installment in the young adult series I can only hope there is not a fourth.
Criminal
When a CIA agent is killed before he can complete his mission to stop a diabolic plot his bosses decide to try a experimental and potentially dangerous operation. They decide to implant his memories, secrets and skills in a death-row inmate who volunteers for the sci-fi type experiment. Unfortunately, the criminal they pick, Jericho, is very strong willed and not very cooperative. And then the experiment doesn›t go as planned - do they ever? "Criminal" has a good cast but the story is too predictable. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. Kelly, a sexy real estate agent sells quite a few rental properties to a successful businessman, but not always with the enthusiastic support of his wife. Recently, she was showing him a home when his wife called, and Kelly could hear his wife ask him “What are you doing?” He sternly answered “I’m with Kathy my real estate agent and we’re having an affair…OK!” After a brief moment she replied “Thank God, I thought she was selling you another house.”
My husband and I couldn’t decide which jacket to buy our granddaughter, so we asked the young salesman. “If you were buying a jacket for your girlfriend,” I said, “what would you get?” “A bulletproof one,” he said. “I’m married.”
The Real Truth
Ah, marriage. I was standing in front of the bathroom mirror one evening admiring my reflection, when I posed this question to my wife of 40 years: “Will you still love me when I’m old, fat, and balding?” She smiled and answered, “I do.”
