The Truth about Blackjack Myths

I

recently spent a couple days in Laughlin Nevada playing Blackjack. At my table I couldn’t believe some of the dumb plays individuals were making, and the idiotic statements that they firmly believed were true. I know many of by TJ Jorgensen you have heard these myths and have seen some of these crazy plays made by uninformed players - so here is the truth about what you have seen and heard.

a new player since an ace can be valued at one or eleven. A lot of new players when told they have 17 are thankful and stand. The truth is the hand of 17 is a loser against every single dealer up card except a six, you either hit or double Ace -6 but never stand.

This assumption is not what basic strategy is based on. Basic strategy is based on bust probabilities of the up card that the dealer is showing, or if you prefer, the probability of the dealer making a hand given a certain up card. The best way to play a hand is derived by a computer given the rules and number of decks used. When players split 10’s or double on 7 or less with an up card of a six, they always assume that the dealer will be hitting 16, when the dealer could have a 5 in the hole and be hitting an 11.

A Bad Player Messes Up The Cards

Basic Strategy Assumes the Dealer’s Hole Card Is a 10

Doubling on a Hard 12

The dealer Should Always Bust When Showing a 6

The fact is the dealer will make a hand when showing a 6 about 56% of the time. That means, more often than not, the dealer won’t bust - So when you hear players tell the dealer that they should bust when showing a 6 - well it’s just not the case. These kind of comments, identify them as uninformed players. Players will often blame a player who doesn’t play basic strategy for “taking the dealer’s bust card”, or “messing up the order of the cards”. The truth is they will help you as much as they will hurt you. From a “long run” point of view it doesn’t affect your outcome. Of course you will remember the moron that split his 10s which enabled the dealer to make his sixteen into a twenty-one instead of busting, but you forgot that the next hand you received “Blackjack” because the order of the cards were changed. When I play - you will never hear me correct a player who plays his hand incorrectly. I figure it’s their money, let them play however they want.

This is worth mentioning because I have seen players do it. For example, one gentleman told me that he always doubles hard 12, You Can’t Win Playing One on One With The Dealer because he wins 80% of the time. This is totally not true - in fact I prefer to play one on one. There isn’t “Really” I replied. I didn’t want to burst his bubble and inform him that you a dealer alive that can deal faster than I can count. On my recent trip to will only win that bet 34.92% of the time, lose 60.10% and push 4.97%. I guess Laughlin I found a single deck game that paid 3 to 2 for blackjack, with some people mistake their imagination for reality. decent rules and dealt almost all the way through the entire deck. I was able Standing on Hard 16 versus the dealers’ 7 to get one on one with the dealer at about 5am, which is what you want with Many players believe that it is better to stand with hard 16 versus a dealer single deck. For the next hour and a half I absolutely murdered their game. I up card of 7. The truth is - it’s a terrible hand to begin with, but it’s a 12-5 won’t tell you how much I won but it was enough to buy a small country. underdog to win if you hit it, considerably less if you don’t. lottery news Sight Unseen

On the Way to the Airport

George Mikuta of Glendale found an extremely unique way of selecting his Powerball numbers – he simply closed his eyes and randomly selected six of them. He’s been playing these same numbers for years, and on February 22, they came through – winning him $1,000,000. The winning ticket was purchased from the Albertson’s, located at 8950 West Bell Road in Peoria. That draw date was Ash Wednesday and George went to church that day and prayed. After he checked his numbers the next morning, he said his prayers were answered. He checked his numbers online, and being a former pilot, was very calm when he realized he’d won second place for $1,000,000. The first thing he did after discovering he was a winner was to call his financial advisor – who was thrilled with his win, because this 61 year-old Mechanical Engineer has been unemployed for several years. George plans to remodel his home and put the rest into his retirement fund. This win means he will be able to spend more time on his favorite pastimes – outdoor photography, and of course playing the Arizona Lottery.

Brandon Fortenberry is a Louisiana resident who has been living in Arizona for about a year working on construction project. Since his wife and family are still in Basile, he has lots of spare time that he fills it by playing the Arizona Lottery Scratchers. He and a friend were heading to the airport when they stopped at a Circle K in Buckeye. His friend bought two Slingo Trios and two Wheel of Fortune Scratchers. He kept the Slingo tickets and gave Brandon the Wheel of Fortune Scratchers. When Brandon showed him the $50,000 amount on one of the tickets, his friend began to swear about how lucky he was and threw the ticket back at him, throwing his hands up in disbelief. Later that day, Brandon called the Lottery Hot Line to get instructions and was told to quickly sign the back of the ticket. After redeeming his ticket he got on a plane to go home for a brief visit. He called his wife before he left to tell her he was bringing a special check home with him. He plans to pay off his truck and 4-wheeler and put the rest down on a double-wide trailer.

Fantasy 5 - No Longer a Fantasy

Kim Hodge of Casa Grande is a regular player of the Lottery’s Fantasy 5, always purchasing Quick Picks. She usually buys two Quick Picks about three times a week, and that’s exactly what she did for the draw of February 2nd. The next morning, she went online to check her numbers. Then she kept rechecking them until finally she had her husband check them. When he too agreed it was a match, she signed the ticket. Poker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 10/12/09 12:31 PM Page 1 Now, the Fantasy 5 is no longer a fantasy. She did not take the ticket to the store to be

scanned, but did breathe a sigh of relief when the Lottery validated the ticket for the jackpot amount of $51,000. The winning ticket was purchased at a Fry’s Food Store on Florence Blvd in Casa Grande. Kim likes Fantasy 5 because she feels the odds are better. As a stay-at-home mom, she believes she has a better chance of winning a small prize, which is nice “pocket money.” She and her husband are both excited about this win as it means paying off all bills, still having some left over for a few personal expenditures, and banking the rest.

HORSIN’ AROUND

DERBY FEVER ith less than a month by Brian before the Mulligan Kentucky Derby May 5 at Churchill Downs, the contenders are starting to come to the forefront but before we get to the logical, proven runners, a word has to go out to the winner of the Louisiana Derby Hero of Order. Everybody loves an under dog and Hero of Order, a $3,000 yearling purchase, got an ideal 2-hole trip in the Louisiana Derby, held on by a half length and paid $220.80, the largest price ever in the fixture. Owned and trained by Russian Gennadi Dorochenko, the conditioner didn’t mince any words after his biggest victory. Dorochenko: “I don’t know why this horse was 99-1. This horse was just 4th in a $300,000 race, you know, I don’t know why. I ride horses. I work this horse. I do everything I know, you see, this is the result. In America, it is different. You know these people, they workout. Workouts don’t pay. What do you get for workouts? Money pays at the wire.” It sounds like he is a man with a plan. As for his runner, the blood is decent. His sire is known as a sprinter, but did win routing. His dam was unraced, but the dam is kin to Grade 1 winner and over $300,000 earner Things Change. For lightning to strike twice in Kentucky, Hero of Order will have to prove he can handle a contested pace.

Union Rags, if he stays healthy, will be hard to beat in Kentucky even though he lost the last day of March in the Florida Derby. He was left with too much to do and may have been unsettled a bit because he had to be re-shod in the paddock. Union Rags won his first start of the year without his A game and should come to Churchill primed for a smasher. Trained by Barbaro’s mentor Michael Matz, Union Rags, this is also some quality blood on the bottom side as his winning dam dropped a runner that won at the Kentucky Derby distance on grass. His dam is also kin to Marry Me Do, who won several stakes, cashed 19 times, and earned nearly $400,000. The Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy just took charge. Calvin Borel, who has won the Kentucky Derby 3 times in the last 5 years, rode this son of A.P. Indy beautifully, opening up a length, taking a little hold and backing off on the throttle, then holding sway by a length to pay $17.40. He was timed in 1:48.79 with a Beyer of 95 and his connections were not surprised. Take Charge Indy’s pedigree screams quality. His sire took the Breeders’ Cup Classic. His dam won multiple Grade 1s and banked over $2.4 million taking half of her 22 starts. She won several stakes at 9 furlongs and was 2nd beaten 6 in her lone try at a mile and a quarter. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Hansen has blinding speed and will be prominent in Kentucky,

but the pace is always crazy in the Derby and that will not work to his favor. Creative Cause carries the hopes of the West Coast. We’ll have a better concept of him after the Santa Anita Derby but he did win the San Felipe despite going wide. Bodemeister is named for his trainer’s son. Bob Baffert is the dad and this guy ran well to Creative Cause but he is bucking a major trend, and that’s trying to win the Kentucky Derby after not racing at 2. No horse has accomplished that feat since 1882. Mark Valeski was hung wide every step of the way chasing Hero of Order and he seems to be improving. The pedigree is decent too as there are several route winners in the tree and his dam won stakes routing and banked nearly $350,000. Other runners that must be watched are Daddy Long Legs, Sabercat, Daddy Knows Best, Wrote and Secret Circle but the feeling at this point is if Union Rags gets a clean trip the first Saturday in May, he will come away with the hardware. Good luck and have a mint julep for me. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Cabin in the Woods Five friends go on vacation at a remote cabin in the woods. They are completely isolated with no cell phone coverage or internet access. The cabin itself is weird and they find a basement full of by odd stuff. This David Ramsey sounds like a typical horror/slasher flick but it is anything but typical. When things start to go bad for our five friends there is more to it than they know. Co-written and produced by Joss Whedon “Cabin in the Woods” has everything including edge-of-your-seat action, bloody horror, some very funny stuff and more than a surprise or two. It is one of the best films of the year.

The Hunger Games In a dystopian society a boy and a girl are selected from each of twelve districts to fight to the death on live television. When her younger sister is selected, Katniss volunteers in her place. Once at the Capital she learns that politics can mean more than her fighting skills once she’s in the arena. “The Hunger Games” followed the best selling youth book it is based on very closely. While it is a little disturbing to see children fighting other children to the death it is an intriguing story that will have you running the gamut of emotions. The cast is amazing but it’s the story that makes this a very good film.

David’s Video Details Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Ethan Hunt and the IMF team are blamed for the bombing of the Kremlin and are shut down. They are cut off from all help and wanted by every agency in the world. They have to clear their name, reestablish the IMF and save the world. This adventure takes them all over the world with edge-of-your-seat action. Everything about this film is great from the cinematography to the writing to the cast. This is one of the best action films of the year and makes you want to see more of the “Mission: Impossible” series.

Contraband

Chris was one of the best smugglers in the business, but now he is retired. He is married, has a family and has gone legit. When his brother-in-law gets involved with a drug dealer and blows the deal he has to get involved to save him. Chris puts together a crew and manages to smuggle millions of counterfeit dollars from Panama but just before he can deliver them things go wrong. Now the drug lord is threatening his wife and children. The action is good and the suspense will keep you involved till the end. “Contraband” is a little better than a typical action film because of the cast

Torchwood: Miracle Day

One day no dies, literally, no one. Rex, a CIA agent is mortally wounded but doesn’t die and neither does anyone on the planet no matter how bad the injuries. It quickly becomes a problem when the hospitals are over run with critically ill and injured patients who remain in pain but don’t die. It is a worldwide crisis. Rex and his partner turn to the long disbanded Torchwood and Captain Jack Harkness. It is only 10 episodes but it is very good television. Even if you have never seen “Torchwood” you will be quickly engaged by this well written action ride. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch for him on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday just after 6am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies. com. gaming news ODDS ARE: BASEBALL IS BACK! The “Boys of Summer” have returned and being the gambler that you are – I suppose you were wondering “Just what are the chances my team will win the NL or AL pennant and go on to win the 2012 World Series?” As in past years, there were “Free Agent” signings, trades, spring training injuries, players that gave up the dream and retired and surprises like retired pitcher Jamie Moyer, who came out of retirement (last played near the end of the 2010 season when he had arm surgery) to make the starting rotation with the Colorado Rockies at age 49! He started his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1986! If he stays with the team for the season he will have the distinction of being the oldest player* in MLB history. *Satchel Paige often called the greatest pitcher who ever played baseball, tossed 3 scoreless innings in one game for the Kansas City A’s at about age 60. He was the most dominant pitcher in the Negro Leagues for over 22 seasons. (Joe DiMaggio once said Satchel was the best and fastest pitcher he ever faced) Satchel Paige played for the first time in the major leagues for Bill Veeck in 1948 (at about age 43, they think) and helped the Cleveland Indians win the American League Pennant. When reporters would ask him his age - his reply was something like “Age is a question of mind over matter…So, if you don’t mind…It doesn’t matter.” Good Luck Jamie - He is a throw-back to the days when players were glad to get paid anything to play this game! Now, here’s pre-season look at the odds – called the “Baseball Futures” for the 2012 season - according to Vegas odds-makers. Remember these odds change daily based on trades, injuries to key players and the way a team is currently playing.

ODDS TO WIN THE 2012 WORLD SERIES: Philadelphia Phillies Los Angeles Angels New York Yankees Detroit Tigers Boston Red Sox Texas Rangers San Francisco Giants Tampa Bay Rays Cincinnati Reds Miami Marlins Atlanta Braves Arizona Diamondbacks Milwaukee Brewers St. Louis Cardinals Washington Nationals

5-1 7-1 7-1 8-1 10-1 10-1 14-1 18-1 20-1 21-1 22-1 24-1 25-1 25-1 30-1

Colorado Rockies Toronto Blue Jays Chicago Cubs Los Angeles Dodgers Cleveland Indians Chicago White Sox Minnesota Twins Kansas City Royals New York Mets Oakland Athletics Seattle Mariners San Diego Padres Pittsburgh Pirates Baltimore Orioles Houston Astros

35-1 35-1 40-1 40-1 60-1 65-1 75-1 80-1 80-1 80-1 99-1 100-1 100-1 150-1 200-1

Now, before you get too depressed - by looking at your team’s odds (if they happen to be near the bottom)… keep this in mind, in recent history, some long shots went on to win the World Series like the St. Louis Cardinals did last year! They were given no chance to win the National League Wild Card – But they did - No chance to win the NL Playoffs – They did that too, and all the top baseball prognosticators said they would get crushed in the World Series – WRONG AGAIN. So get out there and cheer your team on! Finally, again this year – there is no line available on Pete Rose being inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Because, here’s a fact - Doctors say laughing daily is beneficial to your health! “I Love to Laugh” – A therapeutic song by Julie Andrews from the classic movie Mary Poppins and my philosophy on life Phil Scudella - Publisher

THE PERFECT MAN A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. Cabbie: “Perfect timing. You’re just like Frank.” Passenger: “Who?” Cabbie: “Frank Feldman. He’s a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happened like that to Frank Feldman every single time.” Passenger: “Hey, everyone has a few faults.” Cabbie: “Not Frank Feldman…He was a terrific athlete. He used to golf with touring pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star, and could he play the piano, you

would have thought Liberace was banging those keys. He was an amazing guy.” Passenger: “Sounds like he was something really special.” Cabbie: “And there’s more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody’s birthday. He knew which wine to order with any meal, which fork to eat them with. And he could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole house goes dark. But Frank Feldman, he did everything right.” Passenger: “Wow, this was some incredible guy.” Cabbie: “Hey - I’m not through, Frank always knew the quickest way to go in traffic, not like me, I always seem to get stuck in traffic jams - and he knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never argue, even if she was in the wrong. His clothing was always immaculate, and shoes polished too. He was the perfect man! No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman.” Passenger: “What an amazing fellow - How did you meet him? Cabbie: “I never actually met Frank….He died about 10 years ago…..I’m married to his widow.”

SHOW ME THE DUMMY A young ventriloquist is touring the Southern United States and on his way back to Chicago he stops to entertain at a small bar in the Ozarks. He’s going through his usual stupid Redneck jokes, when a big burly guy in the audience stands up and says, “I’ve heard just about enough of your hillbilly jokes. We ain’t all stupid here – I’m about ready to open a can ah whoop-ass on ya.” Flustered, and looking scared, the ventriloquist begins to apologize, when the big guy pipes up again, “You stay out of this mister….I’m talking to the smart ass little guy sittin’ on your knee.”

Final Thought – I need to say thanks to Barry G. – We attended the same high school in Park Forest, IL decades ago. We reconnected on Classmates.com three years ago. He and his wife now live in N. California – I recently found out that he played keyboard with some big name rock bands in the 60’s & 70’s. Now retired, Barry sends me jokes and flash videos every day and I laugh my butt off – He has contributed many jokes I’ve used over the years. Thank You my friend! He sent me a video yesterday and ended with this message – I thought I would pass it along. As you have your first cup of coffee tomorrow morning – Please consider this: Life is too short for drama and petty things, so kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly.
