ARIZONA HAS A NEW POKER CHAMP

WHAT A TOURNAMENT! WHAT A FINISH! It was like watching a mile and a ¼ horse race, with the top three horses dominating most of the way – only to have a long shot who trailed the field in last place the last two hours, come from dead last at the top of the stretch (the last hour) to win the race! The 8th Annual Arizona State Poker Championship made its thrilling return to Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale August 10th thru the 14th. Compared to last year’s 1,053 entries, days one, two and three saw a record-breaking 1,233 entrants fill the ARENA Poker Room in hopes of winning a share of the $1,233,000 prize pool. 214 players reached Monday’s semifinals and fought hard to sit among the top 10, who went on to compete at the final table on Tuesday August 14th.

The final day of the championship was hosted by poker professional, actress and TV personality, Tiffany Michelle, who had the final 10 players checking out their cards along with checking out the sexy emcee. The first casualty was Dylan Horton who entered the final table in 6th place with over $3,000,000 in chips – went all-in early, and was all out in 10th place. One of the 2 small stacks at the final table (“Mo” Arani) went out early with 9th place money. Then Adam Singer, seeded 2nd at the final table with over 4 million in chips was taken out by the chip leader and finished in 8th place. After that it was quite entertaining – because every single time anyone went all-in against a chip leader, “BG” Gant would get out of his chair and yell for the chip leader to take out the smaller stack…he would scream…no 10..no jack, no club or whatever cards the smaller stack needed to win – Then would yell “That’s what we need – I’m movin’ UP - OH YEAH!.” Next Richard Saine one of the original top 4 at the beginning went out in 7th with “BG” screaming “That’s what I’m talkin’ about!” Then the 3rd biggest 6 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2012

stack at the start William Yantis went all-in against Matt Elsby and lost to finish 6th as “BG” was dancing and yelling “YES, YES take him down!” Next it was Nathen Pfunger, the shortest stack to begin with going all-in and finishing in 5th place with “BG” doing his dance next to emcee Tiffany Michelle. Now we were down to the final 4 – Adam White 13+ million, “BG” 8 million, Matt Elsby 6+ million and Sal Musto – almost 4 million. Things really started to slow down with few calls and very few flops seen. There were a few calls with “BG” losing big bets on re-raises from other players – his animation was slowing to a trickle.

with Pocket Jacks – Matt called with Ace / King, as “BG” began his act again “Come on Take him out! NO JACK – Ace or King” as the king hit and “BG” began yelling again “YES - $50,000 more for me!” We were now down to the final two - Matt with 26 million and “BG” about 5 million. Adam went home with over $97,000 – his 3rd biggest win in his life – He had cashed in 2 WSOP events for slightly more money.

The action slowed again for about an hour. 3:55pm – Matt went all-in with pocket Jacks and “BG” called (ACE / Jack) that put him all in with about 8 million in chips. “BG” caught an ACE on the flop and started dancing and yelling NO JACK – his Ace held up to put him about even with Matt at around 16 million each! Then “BG” began yelling again…”I told you I was coming for your chips – I’m comin’ for those next!”

2:30 pm – Excitement returns – Matt went all-in with pocket 9s and Sal called with Ace / Jack – “BG” was back screaming…NO ACE, NO JACK on the flop, turn and river card. Sal was out in 4th place. Matt was now the super chip leader with over 22.5 million, Adam with 6.5 million and “BG” with a tiny stack at 1.5 million. “BG” looked at Matt’s huge stack and said “I’m comin’ for those chips – so get ready” Matt smiled and began to chuckle, “BG” looked over and said sternly “Don’t laugh at me – I mean it…I’m coming for those chips” Matt just smiled and shook his head. 2:50 pm – “BG” was now at 2.3 million in chips and went all-in with pocket 6s – Adam called with Ace / 6 – with “BG” slamming his hand on the table screaming…”NO ACE…Give me a 6…NO ACE” and with that “BG” doubled up to 4.6 mil. 4:10 pm – It didn’t take long for the killer 2:55 pm – MORE ACTION! Adam went All-In hand to happen – “BG” raised big before the flop and Matt went all-in – BG called – Matt showed Pocket 10s against BGs Pocket Kings. With “BG” screaming NO TEN, NO TEN the flop, turn and river provided no help for Matt and after the house did a count…they determined Matt still had a few chips, less than a million to be exact. And with the blinds at around 120,000 / 240,000 – it was all but over. continued on page 24

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Long Run

by Linda Boyd

“You can go the distance, We’ll find out in the long run We can handle some resistance, If our love is a strong one” Eagles

usic by the Eagles is as good as it gets in my opinion and this song is no exception. Still, who really knows what the “long run” means? It could be any length of time in real life depending on who you’re talking to; a few months to the young or almost a lifetime to long-married couples. You’ll find the long run for games of chance is much more specific than for life experiences. If you’re playing any casino game you’ll want the best odds available. Just changing a rule or two in blackjack, the rake (house’s share of the pot) for poker games and the chip used in slot machines alters the player’s chances of coming out a winner. Regardless of the game you choose you should always keep your eye on the theoretical expected return or ER. In simple language, a choice with an ER of 95% is preferable to one with an ER of 90%. So the higher the ER the better it is for the player. The problem with slots is that you have no way of knowing the ER of the game. With video poker, however, you can know for sure because it is based solely on the pay schedule you can access by pushing the “see pays” button on the device. You will not find the ER but if you write down the pay schedule you can determine it when you get home using tutorial software. (I recommend Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker, www.videopokerpractice.com.) Don’t have the software? There are free removable pay schedules in my book, “The Video Poker Edge” that gives you the ER for almost every game on the casino floor. Be aware that in order to approach the theoretical ER you must play the game accurately (not just video poker, but blackjack, poker and any other casino game with a skill component) and understand the meaning of “long run” in a mathematical sense. If you’re not playing computer-perfect but know the basics of the game, say blackjack, you’re still going to do better with a higher than a lower ER. A big problem for players is that they expect the

14 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2012

short term play to resemble the ER and when that doesn’t happen they incorrectly accuse the casino of rigging the machines. The best way to put this into perspective is to examine the meaning of “long run” so that your expectations are realistic. Long Run: Video poker experts still argue over the specifics of this term, but for the purposes of recreational players four “royal cycles” is sufficient. A royal cycle means the statistical probability of getting a royal flush, approximately once every 40,000 hands played, depending on the game. Do not expect to get a royal every 40,000 hands either. You may get four in a day or go a year without one. However, the more hands you play the closer theoretical odds will resemble statistical expectations. When one million simulations were done on software using computer-perfect play the odds were closer to the theoretical expected return than when fewer simulations, say 100,000 hands, were played. If you’re a frequent gambler you will play enough hands over time to see your results match the theoretical expectations. You will also notice anomalies, like incorrect holds resulting in better results than correct holds in the short run. Anything is “possible” but “probabilities” are number specific and are used by smart players in all gambling choices with a skill factor. So the longer the run, meaning the more hands of video poker you play, the closer the actual results will be to the ER. If you are still having bad results over an extended period of time then you may be playing poorly, like consistently holding three to a flush (not a straight flush) in Jacks or Better (JOB) or Double-Double Bonus (DDB) or a similar bad hold. Even so, the higher the game’s ER the better your actual return over time. If you believe this is not the case, then you should stick with games without a skill factor. Final Thoughts: Everybody acknowledges that some part of every wager depends on happenstance, but you have no control whatsoever over that aspect of a game. If you believe in the mathematical field of statistics you will hold the cards that will give you the best long run results instead of playing hunches. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” in addition to “Arizona Player, her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube video, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. lottery news You Can’t Win Unless You Play James Clayton, Jr. of Mesa has a daily routine he doesn’t deviate from; he buys a Scratchers ticket on his way to work every morning. He said, “A Scratchers ticket and a cup of coffee helps me settle and then I’m ready for the rest of the day.” He started to scratch the Jumbo Crossword Scratchers ticket while he was in his car, then put it aside and began his commute to work. While stopped at a light, he glanced down at the ticket and realized it looked different from others he’d scratched. As soon as he could, he pulled over so he could stop the car and scratch the rest of the ticket. At first, he only saw five red words, but as he took a closer look, he found the sixth. He was so unsure,

and so startled, that he decided to return home and check it carefully – he knew that six red words meant the ticket was a top prize winner of $100,000. James’ wife was concerned when he returned home as she thought he was at work and he looked pale. So her first comment was, “What’s wrong?” He said, “I think I’ve won $100,000.” His wife became so excited she began to scream, at which point their son came running into the room. When he heard about the ticket, at his dad’s request he also checked it and agreed that it was indeed a winner. James then called his boss to tell him he would be in later that morning. It wasn’t until the amount of the win had been confirmed

by the Lottery, on June 20, that he began to relax a little. They really hadn’t had much time to think about plans for their winnings, but James would like to pay off some bills, buy his wife a new refrigerator, and save the rest for retirement. The winning ticket was purchased from the Cobblestone Auto Spa and Market on Signal Butte Road in Mesa.

Dianna enjoys playing the Scratchers, not only for the chance of winning, but because they’re also a form of entertainment. Her husband only purchases Scratchers occasionally, but does purchase the Powerball, Mega and The Pick on a fairly regular basis. Dianna never really believed anyone could actually win, least of all herself, but she’s a believer now. She’s going to pay off some medical bills, purchase some new school clothes for her children, and then perhaps a new boat and a trip to Hawaii.

gaming news NORTHERN AZ POKER CHAMPIONSHIP By Jeff Cagan

The 4th annual Bucky’s Casino Northern Arizona Texas Hold’em Championships was held during July this year and just like previous years it was a tough fought battle from the start. Unlike last year when it took almost 2 hours for the first player to be eliminated, this year the championship contenders started dropping in the first hour, including one final table winner from 2011. With 40 players making the final day of action and a $16,600 prize pool to play for, play got very intense at times at on of Arizona’s top tournaments each year. All final day players started the day with $10,000 in chips and a hope of capturing the $6,600 first place prize. From the very beginning Ryan Robinson took control of the chip lead on table 4 as he was responsible for the tournament’s first casualty within the first 15 minutes of play. Queens were the story on table 2 as Rich Cagan won multiple hands with the ladies on his side to help boost him into the top 3 in chips in the first 90 minutes. After 90 minutes the field was down to 36 players, but the blinds were still only $200/$400, so there was still a lot of time and chips to play with. Table 1 saw rock solid Russ Boutin play solidly throughout, methodically building his chip stack into a force to be reckoned with. After the second break and around 4 hours into the tournament Ryan Robinson continued to amass a fortune of chips and continued to pound away at the short stacks at his table, consistently forcing players into all in decisions they did not want to be in. With only 19 players left Ryan remained chip leader, still playing on table 4, with Cecil Penny and 2011 top 10 finisher William Rice playing well on the same table. Table 1 was now very strong with eventual top 10 finishers in almost every seat. With 11 players remaining Mona Otto was eliminated making room for the top 10 to claim their guaranteed prize pool cash. At about the 5 hour mark William Rice was sent packing with a 10th place finish, his 2nd top 10 finish in the last 3 years. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy King met his demise, taking 9th place home with him and the respect of the other players as the only player to finish in the top 10 in 2011 and 2012. Play continued for the next 20 minutes, with the

talk of a chop popping up throughout. Finally, after about 5 hours of play the final 8 players agreed to chop the remaining prize pool, weighted toward their chip stacks at the time, This left Ryan Robinson having the chip lead and taking the top spot after leading almost the entire day. Bucky’s “Road to Riches” Blackjack The Bucky’s Casino “Road to Riches” Blackjack promotion is held Sunday – Thursday between 8am-10am, 4pm-6pm and 10pm-Midnight. During these times all Gold Rush Club player card members can win bonus money each time they get a suited blackjack. Players that receive a suited blackjack will receive a Road to Riches scratcher card. Every card is a potential winner of 10x the original blackjack main bet. Players scratch one of four spots in the first section of road to see if they win 1x their bet. If they do not get a 1x and get a “sorry” the game is over. If they do get a 1x, they then move on to the next section of road where they scratch off one of the four sections to attempt to win 2x their bet. Play continues with the player attempting to win 3x, 5x or the player makes it all the way to the end of the road for10x their bet. A “sorry” at any point ends the game and takes them back to the last multiplier they won. There is no limit to how many times a player can win. Mardi Gras Madness Blackjack Tournament

n Sunday August 26th Vee Quiva Casino will be holding their Mardi Gras Madness Blackjack Tournament. The nice thing about this tournament is that first place is guaranteed to be $5000, with a total prize pool of $10,000. The entry fee for this tournament is only $60 and you can sign up for this special tournament any day from 10am to 6pm at the blackjack pit. Registration ends on August 26th at 3pm. The first round starts at 2pm on that Sunday. The risk factor vs reward factor on this tournament makes it a must play on my calendar. To risk $60 with a chance to take home $5000 makes it a very appealing tournament. Vee Quiva always puts on great tournaments that are well thought out and always run very smoothly. Back in the spring, Vee Quiva Casino offered FREE ROLL Blackjack Tournaments every Sunday, with 1st place paying $1,000! Pretty terrific payout for a tournament with no entry fee! All you had to do was qualify Monday thru Saturday between 10am and 6pm in a free single table tournament and be the chip leader after 21 hands of play to be seeded into the Sunday Tournament. So, when a casino offers a free blackjack tournament or adds a substantial amount of money to the prize pool - it creates a positive expectation for the player. Whenever these types of tournaments are offered, all players should play - skilled or not. When I play positive expectation tournaments I don’t consider it gambling, I call it investing. If you play enough of these tournaments - you will win one. It is the only game in the casino that favors the player and that is why you should always enter these types of tournaments.

22 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2012

The tournament will usually consist of several qualifying rounds, a Semi-Final, and then the Championship round. It is always a good idea to get a copy of the rules ahead of time so that you know how many hands will be played in a round and how many players will advance from each round. These tournaments are always a lot of fun – You’ll have good time even if you don’t win. I will be there and I hope to see you there as well. Vee Quiva is the only west valley casino – To get there, take I-10 west to 51st Avenue, then south about 10 miles.

It only took a few hands before Matt went all-in with a 5,6 clubs against “BGs” 4 of diamonds and a 7 of spades – The flop was 6h,2s,7c to give “BG” the top pair 7s vs 6s – the turn was 8h – no help the river was 5d to give matt 2 pairs - but also gave BG the straight to the 8! GAME OVER! This was Matt’s biggest win ever – he had been at the final table at 2 WSOP qualifying events. Quite an exciting event! A seemingly quick but very intense six plus hour tournament that ended with a big surprise as 29-year-old Casa Grande resident, Eltorna “BG” Gant II, was crowned the 2012 Arizona State Poker Champion. “I knew I was going to do it,” said Gant, a firsttime entrant of the competition. “I never stopped believing in myself that I would win, I just thought it would take longer.”

Though his winnings were initially projected at $208,300, the large number of entries increased Gant’s total prize to $233,696. He also received a championship bracelet and first-place trophy.

David Smith Tournament Director

BG

“We couldn’t have asked for a more thrilling outcome,” said Kent Odekirk, director of poker at Talking Stick Resort. “Many of BG’s competitors were professional poker players and tournament regulars, which proves that with some major luck and a good sense of judgment, poker can be anyone’s game.” Altorna “BG” Gant – “BG” for “Baby Gant”, the youngest in the Gant family had quite a following at the finals - brothers, cousins, friends all yelling for him to win. “BG” is married and has 4 children between the ages of 4 – 9. He plans to pay off his house and take a trip to Vegas. The qualifying top 120 players each walked away a nice payday – 11th place paid over $11,500 and even last place paid $1,972. To enter, players paid $1,000 to buy in, along with a $70 entry fee or they won a seat at the regular satellite and Sunday tournaments. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR The Bourne Legacy

The return of Jason Bourne, in the other films, causes a shadow agency to destroy any operations that could be an embarrassment including killing agents in the field and anyone else involved. Aaron Cross is one of those agents but he manages to survive. Needing medication he tracks down the sciby entists involved and it leads to him taking on those David Ramsey in-charge. “Legacy” takes place at the same time as “The Bourne Ultimatum” and while that is cool the scenes that establish the timeline and continuity slow the pace and action. “The Bourne Legacy” has some great action but the set-up takes too long. “The Bourne Legacy” is a good, but not great, start to the Aaron Cross part of the story.

David’s Video Details The Hunger Games

In a dystopian society a boy and a girl are selected from each of twelve districts to fight to the death on live television. When her younger sister is selected, Katniss volunteers in her place. In training she learns that politics can mean more than her fighting skills once she’s in the arena. “The Hunger Games” followed the best selling youth book it is based on very closely. While it is a little disturbing to see children fighting other children to the death it is an intriguing story that will have you running the gamut of emotions. The cast is amazing but it’s the story that makes this a very good film.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax

Total Recall In a dystopian future the world has changed dramatically after a global war. Doug Quaid is a factory worker with a beautiful wife but something is missing. When he goes to Rekall to get a vacation memory he triggers an old memory that brings the authorities down on him. Suddenly his whole world is turned upside down with his wife among those trying to kill him. It’s not long before he is in the middle of a revolt and possible invasion. This remake is better than the previous version with a better cast, a more compelling story and it doesn’t get side-tracked by weak attempts at humor. The non-stop action in “Total Recall” will leave you needing a nap.

26 ARIZONA PLAYER August 2012

Thneedville is a walled city where everything is artificial even the plants. Clean air is provided for a price by the O’Hare Corp. Twelve-year-old Ted wants to impress Audrey and when he learns she wants to see a real tree he sets out to find one. When he leaves the city he comes to the attention of the Mr. O’Hare. While searching for a real tree he meets the “Once-ler” and eventually the “Lorax”, the guardian of the forest. While the green message is obvious it is done in an entertaining and non-preachy way. Dr. Seuss fans of all ages will enjoy “The Lorax.”

Battleship

During a multi-national navel exercise Lt. Hooper is sent to investigate a rogue ship only to find it is the beginning of an alien invasion. Every effort to stop it is met with superior technology and better firepower. Yes, it is based on the board game and there are a couple of creative references to the game. The characters are typically ‘Hollywood’ and so is the story. While “Battleship” has a lot of action its familiar and manipulative screenplay make you hope the sequel isn’t made.

Jokes of the Month

As we continue to celebrate our 20th Anniversary at Arizona Player – Here’s a classic joke from the past along with a new one to hopefully tickle your funny bone. Remember, laughing daily is beneficial to your health! Phil Scudella - Publisher

Cowboy Heaven

A lesson in sex and good grammar

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, pleading his case to get in…”Have you ever done anything of particular merit in your life” St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy said. “On a trip thru the Black Hills in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers in a road-side bar who were harassing a crying young woman. As they dragged her out to the parking lot, I grabbed my beer, followed them outside and told them to leave her alone, but they all just laughed” So, I walked over to the biggest and most heavily tattooed biker, I tossed my beer in his face, kicked his bike over into the mud, then I punched him squarely on the mouth and as he was falling, I grabbed his nose ring and ripped it out, as I yelled, “Listen jerks, back off - or I’ll kick the crap out of all of you!” St. Peter was very impressed, “Just when did this happen?” he asked’ “About a minute ago” said the cowboy

On his 69th birthday, Charlie got a gift certificate from his wife. The certificate paid for a visit to a medicine man with a traveling show in town for the weekend. Charlie’s wife had been told this ancient potion maker was rumored to have a wonderful cure for erectile dysfunction. So Charlie drove to the outskirts of town, knocked on the door of the trailer, handed his certificate to the medicine man and wondered what he was in for. The old man handed him a potion in a small vial and with a grip on Charlie’s shoulder - warned him, “This is a powerful potion, during the next full moon, which is tomorrow night, take only one drop on your tongue and then say in a loud voice ‘1-2-3.’ “When you do, you will become more of a man than you have ever been and you’ll be able to perform as long as you want.” Charlie was excited, but as he left, he turned and asked, “Wait, what if I’ve had enough - how do I stop the medicine from working?” “To get it to stop working - your partner must say 1-2-3-4” he responded, “but when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon.” Charlie was very eager to see if it worked, so the next evening he showered and invited his wife to join him in the bedroom. When she came in he put a drop of the potion on his tongue, dropped his robe and yelled, “1-2-3!” Immediately, he was the manliest of men. His wife was excited and began ripping off her clothes – then she smiled and said “Charlie this is unbelievable …but why were you yelling the numbers 1-2-3 for?” And that, boys and girls, is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition, because we could end up with a dangling participle.
