gaming news The Annual Arizona State \Poker Championship is back! Do you love to win big money? Well one lucky poker player could walk away with over $200,000 this year at the 9th Annual Arizona State Poker Championships. This tournament is making its exciting return to The ARENA Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale August 9-13, and will once again pit players of all skill levels against each other for a share of the projected $1 million prize pool. “Each year our number of entries, audience turnout and prize pool grow because we strive to make the event a fun experience for both competitors and spectators,” said Kent Odekirk, director of poker at Talking Stick Resort. “The atmosphere is great. Supporters cheer on their favorite players, and while the stakes are high and everyone’s trying to win, they’re still looking to have a good time.” This year marks the fourth time in the No Limit Texas Hold-Em Championship’s nine-year history that the prize pool is expected to hit $1 million, which ensures the TOP 100 PLAYERS walk away with no less than $2,250! If the minimum, 1,000 entries, is met, the first place winner will take home a grand total of $208,300, a championship bracelet and trophy. Second and third place winners will take home $127,500 and $85,000 respectively, as well as trophies to commemorate their win.

Mind blowing finish in the 2012 tournament!

Last year’s Championship welcomed a record-breaking 1,233 players. The large number of entries raised the prize pool well above the estimated $1 million to a total of $1,233,000, which, in turn, increased the first place winnings to a total of $233,696 that went to an excited “BG” Gant II from Casa Grande. “BG” came back from being down about $30,000,000 in tournament chips to just a shade over $1,000,000 – when only two players were left standing. WHAT A FINISH! It was like watching a milehorse race, with the top three horses dominating all the way – only to have a long shot (“BG”) who trailed the entire field of ten the last two hours, come from dead last at the top of the stretch (the last hour) to win the tournament! Two ways to enter this tournament Sign-ups for the Arizona State Poker Championship began June 1. To

enter, players can pay a $1,000 buy-in with an additional $80 entry fee. The buy-in provides each player with $15,000 worth of chips. An optional $30 Staff Appreciation add-on will give players an extra $10,000 in tournament chips. Players also can “win a seat” into this prestigious tournament by participating in The ARENA Poker Room’s satellite tournaments going on daily until Sunday, August 11 at 6am. Don’t miss the “Warm-Up” Tournaments There is even more excitement during the week before the Main Event. On Monday August 5 thru Thursday August 8, The Arena Poker Room is holding “Warm-Up Events” at 11:15am each morning. These NLHE tournaments vary in buy-in amounts – Aug 5th $120 buy-in, Aug 6th the buy-in is $225 Aug 7th is a $330 buy-in and there is a $550 buy-in on Aug 8th – Prize pools vary, call for details. Over the course of the Championship, a designated number of participants will play on days 1, 2 and 3. Players eliminated on the first day will be allowed to reenter on day 2 or 3 for the full buy-in amount of $1,080. Players eliminated on the second day will be allowed to re-enter on day 3 with a $1,080 buy-in.Those days of play will determine the semi-finalists, who will move on to compete on Day 4 – Monday, August 12th until just ten players remain. The exciting finals occur on Day 5 of this event on Tuesday, August 13th where the “Final Table of 10” will battle it out until a 2013 champion is crowned. A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Playing

the

Odds

by Linda Boyd ouble Double Bonus Poker (DDB) is one of the most popular video poker games to ever hit any casino floor. In fact it is such a huge money-maker for casinos that not only will you find it on almost every multi-game device but the recent downgrading of pay schedules has had virtually no impact on the number of players waiting for a machine. Nowadays you’re lucky to find a 9/6 version like the ones referenced in Tables 1.1 and 1.2. Mostly you’ll stumble upon 8/5DDB and if that’s your choice you can usually find a progressive version. Be aware that 8/5 DDB at re-set has an expected return of 96.7861% (assuming computer-perfect play) and a variance of 41.99487. In simple terms, it means you will get a relatively low return on your investment over time (although it’s much better than keno or slots) and there’s more than double the risk of losing your bankroll than games that return double your wager on two pair. Still, people love this game and they will probably want to know their likelihood of achieving winning hands. So here’s the low-down on the odds in specific terms.

Table 1.1 Double-Double Bonus (DDB) Hand/ 5-Coin Bet Royal Flush Straight Flush 4 Aces with 2, 3 or 4 Four 2’s, 3’s or 4’s with A-4 4 Aces Four 2’s, 3’s, or 4’s 4 Fives-Kings Full House Flush Straight 3 of a Kind 2 Pair Jacks or Better Expected Return Variance

Table 1.2: 9/6DDB Hand Frequency Hand: 9/6DDB Royal Straight Flush 4 Aces with 2, 3 or 4 Four 2’s, 3’s or 4’s with A-4 4 Aces Four 2’s, 3’s, or 4’s 4 Fives-Kings Full House Flush Straight 3 of a Kind 2 Pair Jacks or Better

Please note that I rounded occurrences to the nearest whole number. Understanding the Data: If you’ve spent any time in a casino, especially playing video poker, you’ve been regaled with plenty of tales involving anomalies. For example, you may sit down and right away you’re told someone got 4 Aces with the kicker in DDB two or three times. Let’s take a look at Table 1.2 and check out the odds of Aces with a kicker (a kicker is a 2, 3 or 4 for Aces) as a final hand. It’s once in every 16,236 hands assuming correct strategy. (Part of the correct strategy for this game is that you hold just the pair of Aces dealt 2 pair with one a pair of Aces; many hold both pair instead and that decreases their odds of getting 4 Aces with a kicker.) So, does that mean the person with the long-shot story is lying? Not at all; in fact I’ve seen people get multiple royal flushes on the same machine in a short time span. However, you may be on the wrong side of the bell-shaped curve and go through several royal cycles or Aces with the kicker cycles and come up empty-handed. That’s why it’s such a high risk game. Also, remember that even though two pair only occurs once every 8 hands, on average, every

time you get it you receive just 5-coins back or even money instead of a 10 coin return for the same hand with any version of Jacks or Better (JOB). Let’s say you are able to play 800 hands per hour. It means statistically you will have 100 hands of two pair and playing DDB instead of JOB will cost you 500 coins per hour. Ouch! You may get some further surprises by studying Table 1.2. For example, the frequency of the Full House and Flush hands are close even though the Flush pays considerably less than the Full House.

Final Thoughts: If nothing else, by examining this real data for DDB you’ll be able to put infrequent hands into better perspective when none come your way. Also, keep in mind that statistical probability is never based on past hands. In other words, whether you just got a flush on a previous hand or haven’t gotten a flush in 100 hands, the odds prior to the deal are still the same--that’s one in 88. TJ’s Blackjack corner

Betting Systems by TJ Jorgensen receive a lot of e mail about “Betting Systems” - Plain and simple, there has never been a betting system devised that can mathematically overcome the house advantage on a casino game, in fact they can’t even make a dent in it. The bottom line is that dice and roulette wheels have no memory. Each toss of the dice and every spin of the wheel is independent of all past events. Just because you see black come up on the roulette wheel six times in a row does not make red any more likely to come up on the next spin, the odds are always the same. The longer you play, the closer you will get to the expected outcome for that particular game, a loss. The biggest gambling myth is that an event that has not occurred recently is overdue and thus is more likely to come up. This is the basis for most of the betting and playing systems that you see in magazines and on the internet making wild claims. For example; one roulette system says that if you see red come up three times in a row - you should load up on black for the upcoming spin. The problem is that the previous three spins have nothing to do with the upcoming spin, it is completely independent and the probability of red or black remains the same.

Martindale

The system that I get asked about the most is the “Martindale System” This is a system where the player doubles their bet after losing. For example if you bet $1 and lose, your next bet is $2, if you lose that your next bet is $4, if you lose that $8, if you lose that bet $16, and so on. The idea behind this system is that by doubling your bet after a loss you would win enough to cover all past losses plus a unit. The problem with this system is that it is easier than you think to lose a lot of bets in a row and quickly run out of betting money, or reach the table max bet. Gambling magazines and the internet are full of people selling betting

16 ARIZONA PLAYER July 2013

systems with the promise of huge wins over the casino at games of chance. These offers are the modern day equivalent of the old wonder tonic pitchmen out of the old west. Never spend one penny on a gambling system. Everytime one has been put to the test in a computer simulation it has failed and failed miserably. They always show the same ratio of losses to money as flat betting. Gambling systems have been around as long as gambling and not one has ever been proven to work. You can gain an edge over the casino by learning to count cards in the game of blackjack. It takes a lot of work to master this, but it is mathematically proven to overcome the casino edge. By assigning a plus value to smaller cards and a minus value to the tens and aces it gives you the composition of the remaining cards to be played, you know if there is a surplus of tens or a surplus of small cards yet to be dealt. With this information you know if you or the house has the advantage on the upcoming hand and you then select your bet size accordingly. Additionally there are 43 changes in playing strategy over basic strategy. This gives you a more accurate way to play the hands. By playing this way instead of the casino having a .57 advantage over the basic strategy player, you have a long term advantage of about 1 1/2%. You have to play perfectly in order to have this long term advantage and it takes practice but in the long run it is worth it. You can learn to count cards in my book, available on my website www.freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. lottery news Retired General has a million ways to celebrate

Patience Pays Off

General Marsh spends his winters in Arizona and sometimes stays even longer. Since he plays Powerballon a regular basis, he’s sure to purchase his tickets when he’s here. As is his usual practice, early Saturday morning, he goes to the store to buy his tickets. He never has a set amount that he spends; it just depends on his mood. On March 16, he only wanted two tickets for that night’s drawing, so he grabbed a selection slip and randomly chose six numbers for each of the tickets he intended to buy. He then put the tickets away and didn’t check them until Sunday when he had time to read the paper. His wife was sitting near him, and when he told her that he’d won $1,000,000, she said, “I don’t believe it.” He countered with “Believe it.” This went on for a while until it finally registered that he wasn’t kidding. That evening, they went to a small dinner party, and while there, he told several of his good friends. They believed him when he told them, but wanted him to be sure he’d read the numbers correctly. They didn’t want him to be disappointed. As a matter of fact, two of his long-time friends accompanied him to the Lottery when he redeemed his ticket. He promised to take them out to lunch. While living in Phoenix, General, who is retired, spends a lot of his time on the golf course. Even if he’s not golfing, he enjoys the weather and the respite from the snow. With regard to his winnings, he intends to pay off all his bills and invest the rest - The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K, 1605 E. Bell Road in Phoenix

Robert McDonald of Golden Valley had the golden touch when he purchased his $500,000 winning Arizona Black ExclusiveScratchers ticket. He’d won $500 on a differentScratchers, but the store couldn’t cash it. He then went to another store to see if they could cash it, but the customer service counter wasn’t open, so he decided to wait. To keep himself occupied while he waited, he purchased one Arizona Black Exclusive from the Lottery vending machine. Robert scratched the ticket while he was in the store, and as soon as the customer service counter opened and the people waiting in line had left, he quietly took the ticket over to the clerk to be validated. Somehow, he managed to drive home, although he was in a mild state of shock. Once he got home, he called his son to tell him the news. His family was thrilled for him and drove him to the Lottery office to redeem the ticket. Robert, who is retired from the construction field, loves playing Scratchers because it’s a form of relaxation. He has no particular favorite, just buys whatever appeals to him at the time. He frequents stores in Kingman as well as Golden Valley. Robert is considering purchasing a new home with some of his winnings and investing the rest. The winning ticket was purchased at Smith’s Food and Drug, 3490 N. Stockton Hill Road in Kingman, AZ.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR The Lone Ranger Butch Cavendish escapes custody, just before his hanging and a group of Texas Rangers head out after him and his gang. They are ambushed and left for dead. Tonto, a Native American warrior, finds them and realizing that one is still alive and he nurses him back by David Ramsey to health. He tells the surviving Ranger to wear a mask while he seeks revenge on Cavendish. It turns out that Tonto is after him as well. It follows the original Long Ranger story with only a few changes but does add humor to the action. Johnny Depp continues his string of quirky characters as “Tonto” and does a very good job. The Long Ranger could have been trimmed by thirty minutes but it does deliver the action you expect.

David’s Video Details 42

Jackie Robinson was recruited out of the Negro Leagues by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers and would go on to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Ricky considered many players but chose Robinson because, while he may not have been the best player, he had the right temperament to handle the pressure. Harrison Ford is terrific as Rickey - playing him with humor and gravitas. “42” is about what Jackie Robinson had to go through and about Branch Rickey taking a stand but at its core it is about a love of baseball.

Dead Man Down

Despicable Me 2 Gru is back and is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to stop a powerful new super criminal. At first he resists helping the good guys but he realizes since he adopted his three girls he has stopped being evil. The girls think Gru needs a girlfriend and the AVL agent, Lucy, seems like a good match. Gru’s minions start disappearing and that maybe connected to the new super villain. The AVL has narrowed down the suspects so Gru and Lucy go undercover at the mall to find him. The minions are the best and the funniest part of the film, just as they were in the first one. The best animated film of the year, so far, “Despicable Me 2” is funny animated action for all ages - and the 3D is amazing.

Victor has quickly risen in the ranks of Alphonse’s ruthless criminal empire but he has a ulterior motives. One night his neighbor, Beatrice, films him killing someone and disposing of the body. Meanwhile, Victor saves Alphonse during a shootout further cementing his status. Beatrice blackmails Victor into helping her get revenge on the man who disfigured her in a car wreck. When they realize they share similar goals they begin to help each other. It gets intense and a little complicated when Alphonse lays a trap for whomever is after him. “Dead Man Down” is an edge of your seat thriller with intense action.

Trance

When an art auction is interrupted by a group of armed men the auctioneer attempts to get the multi-million dollar painting to safety but gets knocked out in the process. When he wakes up he doesn’t remember what happened. He soon finds out that he was working with the robbers and now they want to know what he did with the painting. He doesn’t remember so they hire a hypnotherapist to delve into his mind and find the painting. It gets very complicated when the therapist realizes what is going on and wants a cut. The film goes between current events and those in the past and hypnotic suggestions. It almost works but it is so convoluted that it just doesn’t make sense or keep you engaged. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch him on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday around 6:20am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday at 11am. Read his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com.
