CASINO RESORT

DESTINATION FUN! DELIGHTFUL DAYTRIP OR FULL WEEK ADVENTURE!

The Apache Gold Casino Resort, just 45 minutes East of Mesa on Hwy 60 in Globe is a terrific one-day getaway or a great place to hunker down for a week long adventure at the Apache Gold Best Western Hotel, or at their RV Park. Inside the casino there’s gaming excitement with slots, blackjack and bingo, plus great food at 3 restaurants and entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge – outside, you’ll find an 18-hole golf course and lots to explore in the area. Apache Gold Casino feature 700 state-of-the-art video and reel slot machines and progressives with exclusive games like Apache Legends and the new Apache Ponies. If you’re watching your bankroll, you’ll be pleased to know you’ll find plenty of penny slots and $5 Blackjack tables at Apache Gold Casino. Bingo players also love the fact that the bingo hall has only paper games - no machines. And don’t forget to sign up for a free Players Club Card, because members can earn up to $15 cash on the day of sign up. See Players Club for details. When you get hungry, whether you’re looking for a buffet or a sit-down meal – Apache Gold has you covered. The Wickiup Buffet has all-you-can-eat meals for as low $5.95 per person. The Apache Grill features authentic southwestern dishes along with classic favorites. And just added, the all new Apache Legends BBQ has all-you-caneat ribs for $11 and weekly lunch specials starting at $6. Apache Stronghold Golf Course was painstakingly designed by awardwinning architect Tom Doak. Natural beauty has been preserved at every juncture, including 14 archaeological sites. The course features a 3,200 foot elevation, with two par-5 holes of over 600 yards each, and five par4’s which push the envelope. Many of the fairways on the front nine are

isolated in their own valleys, surrounded by 20 to 50 foot hills covered in sage and mesquite trees. Distant mountain ranges provide a backdrop for several greens, including the par-3 14th, a modified Redan hole set atop a 90-foot ridge at the southern end of the course. You’re sure to find Apache Stronghold both challenging and spectacular.

ADVENTURES NEARBY Just 5 minutes away in historic downtown Globe you’ll find antique shops, book stores, coffee shops and restaurants. Close to the downtown area is the Besh-ba-gowah Archeological Park. Explore this reconstructed 700 year old pueblo of the Salado culture (AD 1150-1450) by climbing ladders (at your own risk) and peering into rooms decorated with items typical of the time. This is a great place for adults and kids because this site doesn’t overwhelm the visitor – It’s kind of the “comfort food” of ruins, providing an intimate experience that other more well known ruins can’t match. You get to walk where the pre-Columbian Salado people lived – You can’t do that at Montezuma’s castle or Tuzigoot. Another great side trip is the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park in Superior, just 25 miles west of Globe. Visitors from all around the world come here to see this 400-acre botanical garden situated in a striking natural location amidst towering volcanic rock formations at the base of Picket Post Mountain. There are three miles of paths and trails – about half are level and wheelchair accessible – that lead through 20 different gardens, plant exhibits, and natural areas, including an continued on page 20

LOTTERY NEWS A WINNING COMBINATION – POWERBALL WITH POWER PLAY Laurence Hinkel had purchased Powerball tickets for years, but soon realized that his brother was making more money than he was with his small wins. He asked him what the deal was, and his brother told him, “Easy, I play the Power Play Option.” From that moment on, Laurence always purchased his Powerball tickets with the Power Play option. He said, “It is well worth the small investment.” And since he lives in a neighboring state, he always purchases his tickets from the same store; Beaver Dam Station, I-15 HWY 91, ½ Mile south of Littlefield. His Powerball purchases are always the same: one Quick Pick for five draws. Purchasing the Power Play Option really paid off for Laurence in September when he won a $10,000 prize, and because he invested the extra money and the Power Play number drawn that night was a five, he ended up winning - not $10,000 but $50,000! Laurence went online to check his ticket, and the first time he checked he found three numbers that matched. He checked again and found four numbers that matched. At that point, he called to his wife to come check the ticket. After they both agreed as to what matching

numbers they had, the next thing they checked was the date on their ticket to be sure they hadn’t made a mistake; they hadn’t. He couldn’t wait to tell his brother the good news, even if he might say, “I told you so.” Hinkel mainly plays Powerball and an occasional Scratchers ticket. He and his wife will probably use their winnings for a cruise and save the rest. Remember - For an extra $1 per game, you can multiply your winnings up to five times based on a number from two to five randomly selected at draw time.) If you purchased the Power Play and matched five numbers, excluding the Powerball, you automatically win $1 million!)

A GOOD INVESTMENT When Cara Kamienski discovered she had won $50,000 on Diamond Dazzler Bingo, she couldn’t wait until she could get to the phone that night and call her older brother and tell him “Hah!” He was always telling her that buying Scratchers tickets was a waste of time and certainly a poor investment for someone who was still in school. After she told him, she was going to ask him to help her invest it wisely since he’s an investment banker. Cara only bought two tickets, and she likes the Diamond Dazzler Bingo as it takes longer to play. She’s played it before, but never really won anything. She wasn’t sure what ticket she was going to purchase until this particular ticket caught her eye. She took them back to school and scratched them. Her original thought was that she had won $150, so she took it to the store and told the clerk to check it and that she wanted to cash it. The clerk assumed it was a small win and, before the claim form was printed, tore the ticket into four pieces. Kamienski retrieved the four pieces of the ticket and when she brought it to the Lottery office, Investigations was able to reconstruct it so 14 ARIZONA PLAYER DECEMBER 2010

she could redeem it. (Albeit, she was a little nervous until she was assured it was not an unusual occurrence.) Cara is a full-time student studying design and is working on completing her Masters. She hasn’t told anyone about her win except for immediate family and a couple of close friends. Being a fulltime student, this win definitely came at a good time. She’s considering getting a car, but will wait until she talks to her brother as to how to make the rest of her winnings grow.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

GREAT

by Linda Boyd

EXPECTATIONS

t seems that 2010 just flew by and it’s time to get ready for the end of the year Holidays. During tough economic conditions families pull closer, New Year’s resolutions are more serious and people feel a need for some outlets to unwind. That’s why I expect to see a booming business for restaurants and entertainment venues, especially casinos. So what can you expect to find in your favorite Arizona casinos to make the season bright? You can plan on spotting new trends both in general and specific to video poker players. RESTAURANTS/BUFFETS: Some see the holidays as a perfect excuse to go to every half-priced happy place spot in town to pig out. They’re already vaguely forming their New Year’s resolution to get in shape. Certainly, you will find excellent food specials in casino restaurants – And almost every casino has a high end restaurant with reduced prices during these slower holiday times. So there’s no need to make the Nevada trip for fine dining, but try to avoid going overboard at the buffets - since some people pile their plates so high, they could sink a ship! VIDEO POKER: I’ve noticed few changes in game denominations and a tendency for the single line devices to get considerably more play than the more expensive multi-line machines. To their credit, local casinos are observant about the machines receiving little play and they’re starting to remove deadbeat devices to make room for the most popular machines. I appreciate the fact that the bandit machines, like coyote ugly deuces wild (hideous pay schedules that just suck up money like a vacuum), are getting virtually no play. The same is true for slot machines with new chips that have extremely low ERs (expected returns). It’s great to see some go and I expect more to disappear as players wise up. PROMOTIONS: If you’re a VIP at any of Arizona’s casinos keep your eyes peeled for invitations to holiday parties. These are better than regular events because this time of the year there’s a gift-giving theme and often special events include presents for the casino’s best customers. If your play is good enough to warrant a host yet you haven’t received any party invitations you may want to call and ask about special events for frequent players. Sometimes they’re at the discretion of the host and just by making a polite inquiry you’ll be included. 18 ARIZONA PLAYER DECEMBER 2010

TECHNOLOGY: There are some customer-friendly innovations in your local casinos. One that I like is the new bill-changer, ticket redemption machines. I’ve mentioned my pet peeve of being behind the person with a fist full of small dollar amount tickets. The new machine has prompts to put all tickets into one transaction--a blessing for those in line. You’ll also find some of the latest and most entertaining slots being rolled onto the casino’s floor. There’s a Chinese-themed game by Konami that offers the opportunity to win a few hundred bonus games, but it’s very volatile. This game is extremely fun to watch and to play, I’ve tried both. Just make sure you don’t get carried away to the ATM in your enthusiasm--believe me, it’s easy to do. Also you’ll find the Star Trek game where you store your ID number and can continue to earn medals in any casino with the game during future play. “Sex and the City” and other up-to-date themes have even more bells and whistles than older slots, especially if you make it to bonus rounds. HOTELS/RESORTS: Even though New Year’s Eve is a time when casinos are bursting at the seams, Christmas is not. So if you want a few days vacation after all the extra holiday preparations you may want to inquire at your local casino’s resort hotel. Often the rates are reduced in December and you might even be offered a comp room. Management is wise enough to know an occupied room is better than an empty one. The best news for Arizona players is that you won’t find “resort fees” in local hotels like you do in Vegas. This trend is to charge unadvertised fees for using the pool, internet, a newspaper, buffet discounts, or any of a variety of perks that used to be free. Many properties in Nevada add as much as $30 per night even for players who won’t use any of the extras. Clearly, this is a thinly veiled attempt to advertise a low rate but receive a significantly higher one. FINAL THOUGHTS: I’ve noticed that casinos both locally and elsewhere have passed on many expensive new industry options displayed at the last few G2E’s (Global Gaming Expos). However, the most customer-friendly innovations, like new video slots, more efficient ticket-redemption devices, virtual tickets for drawings, easy-to-use kiosks, excellent promotions and other perks can be found in Arizona casinos. All in all I have great expectations for this Holiday Season from Arizona’s casino industry. High value for your entertainment dollars while supporting our local businesses-can’t imagine a better way to end 2010 and bring in 2011!

FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW

TOURNAMENTS FOR COUPLES AND KIDS

here was a lot of tournament action in December. Along with the normal weekly menu of tournaments at valley casinos, Casino Arizona had its first annual “Jack and Jill Couples Championship” on Sunday, Dec. 5, and by Marianne Minneci the annual “Toy Drive Tournament” on Saturday, Dec. 11 - Both events were huge successes. The Couples tournament drew over 180 couples, who played for a prize pool of $12,000. The Toy Drive Tournament had over 380 participants. Toys were stacked high for a good cause. The children were the big winners in this event. There will be a lot of happy kids this Holiday Season, thanks to the generosity of so many. I enjoyed playing in both events. We didn’t fare very well in the Couples event. The cards just weren’t falling in our favor. To top it off, I had one of my “if only hands.” You know the ones, where you find yourself walking away from the table questioning your decision on a particular play. Did you ever make the right move at the table and have it backfire? This is exactly what happened to me during the Couples Championship tournament. I was dealt a 10 and J of clubs in early position, so I called the minimum bet of $200. The flop was 8 of hearts, 6 of diamonds and Q of clubs. I was playing the hand out in my head, a nine of any suit would give me a inside straight. I may have bet the flop for the minimum bet, but the player in seat one threw out a $1,200 bet, so I did what I know to be the right thing, which was to fold. The turn card was an ace of clubs. The river made my head spin, when the king of clubs hit the board. I would have had that elusive Royal Flush and probably cleaned out two of the calling stations at the table, but who knew? The rest of the tournament went downhill for me from there. I broke one basic rule of poker by not moving on. I couldn’t quite get that hand out of

my head. That hand was followed up by pocket kings a short time later. I razed, and was called by two players. Board came up ace, ten, ace. Bye-bye pocket kings. I felt bad when I left my partner (Bernie) with a sparse $2,000 in chips. His game wasn’t going much better, when his all-in bet on A-K suited was snapped up by a straight on the river. So goes the game of poker. I did fare better, however, in the Toy Drive tournament. After a struggle before the first break, I managed to catch a few pivotal hands and claw my way into 44th place and received $50 for my efforts. Hopefully, this win breaks the string of bad luck I’ve had of late. Just haven’t been able to grab the prize lately. But I did manage to beat my publisher boss, Phil (he was about 90th) But, last year he made the final 2 tables and they chopped. Maybe I felt relaxed because Phil treated me and Bernie along with his son Philly, his Granddaughter Victoria and her boy friend Richie to a buffet breakfast at the casino that morning, then as a Christmas present, put all of us in the poker tournament. I’m looking forward to better luck in the New Year. To all my poker friends out there, please mark Saturday, March 19, on your calendars. I’ve offered my help to organize a poker tournament to raise money to benefit Easter Seals Southwest Human Development. The tournament will be held at Fort McDowell casino. This should be a fun event, and we hope a successful one. More details to follow very soon. I want to wish all the best to everyone for a Happy, Healthy and Safe Holiday Season. May all of your wishes for the New Year come true! Until next time, “Have a Lucky Month.” Write me at AZPOKERLADY@COX.NET

Pulled from the water by Prince Caspian they board the flagship of the Royal Narnian Navy, The Dawn Treader, where they cross the sea looking for seven lost Lords of Narnia. Along the way they run into dragons, slavers, magicians and an assortment of strange creatures while searching for the source of an evil green mist. Not as good as the first two Narnia adventures but if you are a fan you will want to see it.

David’s Video Details INCEPTION Cobb leads a group of industrial spies who can extract information from people’s dreams. He is asked to plant an idea into someone’s mind and accepts the job even though he has only done it once, with bad results. Black Swan Nina lives for Ballet, she is obsessed with being perfect. When the artistic director of her New York Ballet company replaces the prima ballerina he casts Nina as the lead in the new production of Swan Lake. She obsesses about the role and Lily, the impressive new dancer who appears to want her role. Nina is perfect as the White Swan but is having trouble with Black Swan, something Lily has down. This is a very well acted psychological thriller in the hands of a gifted director.

Gru thinks of himself as the world’s greatest villain and to prove it he plans to steal the moon. When his rival gets in the way he decides to use three orphan sisters to get his way and pretends to adopt them. The girls are adorable but they change his life in ways he doesn’t expect. There are plenty of laughs and cute characters – the minions are unique. This is fun for the entire family..

EASY A Olive is a typical high school girl until she tells her best friend a made-up story about sleeping with a college man. The conversation is overheard and turned into a rumor that spreads through the school like wildfire. As things spiral out of control she has to figure out how to get her reputation back without destroying anyone else’s. The script is witty and the cast is deadon perfect. Watch for him on the CBS 5 Morning News Friday just after 6am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday at 11am - email David at David@ TheSnackBar.net.

JOKE OF THE MONTH Pearly Wisdom Three men died in an RV crash on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. “In honor of this holy season” Saint Peter said, “You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.”

Saint Peter said ‘You may also pass through the pearly gates’.

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a Bic lighter. He flicked his Bic – producing a small flame “It represents a candle”, he said.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, “And just what do those symbolize?”

“You may pass through the pearly gates” Saint Peter said.

The man hesitated for a moment then replied “These…are Carols.”

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys and started shaking them and said “They’re bells.”

And So, The Christmas Season Begins.
