Forbes Four Star Casino Del Sol Resort Unveils Arizona’s Newest Ace and Enhances Player Amenities with New Loyalty Program

Casino Del Sol Resort is already one of Arizona’s most decorated properties and the only Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star and AAA Four Diamond casino resort in the state. It’s now enhancing its spectacular collection of amenities with the opening of the newest oasis in the desert, the 18-hole, championship Sewailo Golf Club. Casino Del Sol Resort, an enterprise of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, unveiled Sewailo Golf Club to the community on December 12. To officially mark the opening, Native American golf course designer, PGA Tour player and The Golf Channel commentator, Notah Begay III participated in a ceremonial first swing. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Casino Del Sol Resort took the opening as an opportunity to make a major partnership announcement - Sewailo Golf Club will now be the official home of the Arizona Wildcats men’s and women’s golf teams - Big news for Wildcat fans and golf enthusiasts throughout Arizona! Now members of the team, hotel guests and the public can enjoy all 200 acres of this 18-hole championship course. Named for the Pascua Yaqui word for "flower world,"

Sewailo features more than 30,000 native flowers, plants and cacti, many of which were salvaged and replanted from the original construction site. Opting to work within the native landscape and incorporate existing resources, Casino Del Sol Resort and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe tapped Begay. With his business partner Ty Butler, they carefully carved Sewailo out of the high Sonoran Desert, resulting in rolling velvet fairways and exquisite greens complemented by nearly 14 acres of extraordinary lakes, streams and flowing water features. The challenging, 18-hole golf course measures 7,400 yards from the championship tees and features five different tee options at each hole, making the course challenging, yet playable for the novice golfer. Troon Golf, the undisputed worldwide leader in top-shelf golf experiences, is a valued partner of Sewailo Golf Club and Casino Del Sol Resort. Sewailo also features an extensive driving range; several practice areas for chipping and putting, golf instruction programs and a full complement of Callaway Golf rental equipment. continued on page 27

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Blurred Lines

by Linda Boyd s there anybody who hasn’t seen at least one of the two versions of Robin Thick’s hit video “Blurred Lines”, with T.I. and Pharrell? I personally liked both the YouTube and Vevo videos of this tongue-in-cheek song--reminded me more of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” than Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up”, but “hey, hey, hey” that’s just me. (Marvin Gaye’s estate unsuccessfully sued Thick and friends for plagiarism over the recording.) I immediately thought of video poker games when I saw the title and concluded that there are different strokes for different folks. That’s because some players want a high risk game and are willing to pay the potential price of a quick bankroll loss that comes with the possibility of big thrill wins. I do think that smart gamblers must be consciously aware of what’s at stake in both scenarios.

return (ER), but 9/6JOB isn’t available anymore in many casinos. You will need to make sure you find the right game (free removable pay schedules, games strategies and ER data can be found in my book, “The Video Poker Edge”) and know the basic game strategy. A quick way of spotting low-variance nondeuces games is to check the payouts for frequent hands, like two pair (occurs approximately once every eight hands) and make sure you get a return of double your wager. There are so many deuces wild choices, many are coyote ugly, that you should bring pay tables and ER’s with you. Only you can assign a value to perks, like comped rooms and food or show tickets. Expect to receive more when you choose a low-variance game whenever the casino bases its comps on coin-in.

For non-deuces games you will see tempting high-paying bonuses at the top of the table for infrequent hands, like 4 Aces with a kicker (two, three or four for DDB) accompanied by loss of coins for frequent hands, like two pair. For example, you’ll get an even money return for two pair, instead of double your wager. If you only get even money for a straight in your deuces wild choice, then you’ve found a volatile version of the game. You’ll run less money through the casino’s devices on average by choosing a risky game because you’ve increased the odds of quickly running out of bankroll. Some people aren’t playing for comps, but you should at least consider the slot cash you’re sacrificing before selecting a going for broke VP game. Also, you should expect fewer promo entries whenever the house awards tickets based on coin-in, as most do.

Low Variance Games:

High Variance Games:

Blurred Lines:

If you came to “go big or go home” like riverboat gamblers then you’ll want a high variance game like 9/6Double Double Bonus (9/6DDB) or Loose Deuces (check the casino’s version against your ER tables to make sure it’s got a decent ER) and, once more, make sure you know basic game strategy. Be prepared to sit on the sidelines if you run out of money in a hurry because even with computerperfect play high variance games are risky.

Just like Alan Thick’s mega-hit song, there will be blurred lines as to what’s good or bad and only you can make the right decision. There are video poker pundits who are slaves to the ER or theoretical expected return, but they fail to factor in the game’s entertainment value. You’re in a casino to unwind and have fun, not to earn a living. What’s reasonable for one player may not be for somebody else. The most important consideration for players is to make sure you’re aware of the impact your VP games of choice will have on your cash, comps, promotional entries and overall gaming experience. The worst thing you can do is blow a lot of hard-earned money and end up talking to yourself, and harshly, all the way home!

If you’re interested in staying in the game for several hours and not busting your bankroll then look for 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6JOB). If you can’t find it then consider 8/5Bonus Poker (8/5BP) or Not-So-Ugly Deuces (NSUD). You will find all the details for 8/5BP in Arizona Player’s archives (October and November, 2013). The variance for both 8/5BP (20.90) and NSUD (25.62) are both VideoPoker_1/3page_vp ad.qxp 10/12/09 12:31 PM Page 1 higher than 9/6JOB (19.52) and so is the expected

lottery news Mega Win in Mesa

A Jolly Holiday for Ramona

Crosswords are fun and profitable

On October 10, Susan Racine of Mesa redeemed her winning $1,000,000 Mega Millions ticket for the October 8 drawing. As usual, she purchased one Quick Pickfrom the Lottery vending machine at the Albertsons on Baseline Road in Mesa. She always purchases the Megaplier "because of the American Dream of winning big." Originally from Massachusetts, Susan has been retired for about four years. She loves living in Arizona and doesn't miss the harsh winters of the east. However, she's still not crazy about what she calls "our harsh summers." She has been playing Mega Millions ever since it came to Arizona. Susan checked her ticket on the Arizona Lottery's website the evening of October 8. She checked the numbers three times and then visited another state's website to make sure the numbers matched. "I didn't want to get my hopes up." Once she was sure the ticket was indeed a $1,000,000 winner, she signed the back of it. Susan said, "I didn't get much sleep that evening." At the time of this interview, Susan has not yet told her family. She wants to talk to a financial advisor and an attorney regarding the best use for the money. However, she is planning to do a little renovating on her home, which she says she has neglected. The rest of the money will be a nice retirement cushion.

When Ramona Garcia of Glendale recently went to the A-1 Food Store at 6514 W. Bethany Home Road in Glendale, she realized she hadn’t purchased any Scratchersfor a few weeks, and the new Holiday Riches ticket caught her eye. So she purchased one ticket.Ramona scratched the ticket while still in the store. However, once she realized that she had a $100,000 winning ticket, she immediately went home. After she told her husband of over 60 years what she’d won, he said, "Let's go dancing." Later that night, she completed the information required on the back of the ticket and signed it. Ramona is the first Holiday Riches top prize winner. She and her husband enjoy spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ramona admitted to having had difficulty sleeping the past few nights. The reality of the win has not yet registered, although they have discussed their plans. The couple intends to make a couple of small purchases, and the rest will be put into savings. One side note: When Executive Director Jeff Hatch Miller congratulated the couple upon being married for so many years, her husband said, “I’ll keep her.” Ramona plans to take a short break before she buys more Scratchers. She and her husband want to savor this win.

Maria Martinez of Mesa likes playing all kinds of crossword Scratchers, mainly because they take time to play. She’s been pretty lucky with the tickets, usually winning small amounts. A few months ago, she won $500. She purchased two King Size Crosswordson October 21, and scratched them at home. She was pretty sure she had a winning $100,000 ticket, but had her family check it to be sure she hadn’t made a mistake. Next, she took it to the store to be validated. Once she was sure it was a winner, she signed the back of the ticket. Maria buys Scratchers several times a week from various stores. She also playsPowerball, Mega Millions, and The Pickon a regular basis. The only plan Maria has for the money is to pay off her mortgage. The winning ticket was purchased at the Safeway at 3185 W. Apache Trail in Apache Junction.

A Simple Basic Strategy For Recreational Players

have been telling players for the last 20 years that the first step to playing winning blackjack is memorizing basic strategy. In fact some of my columns have included a basic strategy chart. However, when I play blackjack, I can count on one hand the number of players at the any table I’ve played at that play it perfectly. Apparently players just don’t want to take the time to memorize it. In a basic strategy chart there are 250 squares with a hit, double, split, or stand in the box. For those of you part time and recreational players I am going to give you a very simple strategy that only has 21 squares to memorize. This simplified strategy will only add a 0.14% disadvantage to the house edge. That comes down to about a cost of one hand for every 12 hours of play. This strategy is not correct 100% of the time. If you want to play a winning game get my book “How to Play Winning Blackjack” on my web site: Freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner. This strategy will help the part time and recreational players. Here are some bad player strategies that I have seen lately that you should never try. The “Never Bust” Strategy” - Here the

18 ARIZONA PLAYER December 2013

player never hits a 12 or above. A player using this strategy is at a 3.91% disadvantage to a basic strategy player who is at about a 0.51% with a six deck game. The “Mimic the dealer” Strategy, here the player hits until they bust or get 17 or better. The player never doubles or splits since the dealer isn’t allowed to. This strategy puts the player at a 5.48% disadvantage. The “Assume a 10 in the hole strategy”, When the dealer has an ace up the hand is played according to basic strategy because the dealer would check for a blackjack. This strategy puts the player at a whopping 10.03% disadvantage. If you just go to play blackjack once in a while this simplified basic strategy is easy to learn and simple to play. Your money will last longer and who knows you might walk out a winner. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. Jokes of the Month Poker Face

Seven retired Italian guys and long-time friends were playing their daily No-Limit Texas Hold-Em poker game in the condo clubhouse when Guido, who was dealt “Pocket Aces” loses $500 on that hand, slams his cards on the table, then clutches his chest, and drops dead in his chair.

The door opens and Guido’s wife looks up and asks in a condescending tone “what do you want Pasquale?”

Showing respect for their fallen comrade, the other six continue playing, but standing up.

“Tell him to drop dead!” yells the wife. “I’ll go tell him.” says Pasquale.

When the game finally breaks, Giovanni looks around and asks, “So….who’s gonna’ tell Guido’s wife?”

Candice and her latest conquest Johnny are heating things up on her couch when the phone rings.

They cut the cards. Pasquale picks the low card and has to carry the tragic news to his old pals better half..

She answers it, says “OK”, hangs up and is ready to get back to business.

They tell him to please be discreet, be gentle, don’t make a bad situation any worse. Pasquale replies “Discreet? I’m the most discreet person you’ll ever meet. Discretion is my middle name. Leave it to me!” So, he goes to the Guido’s condo and knocks on the door.

24 ARIZONA PLAYER December 2013

Pasquale declares: “Your husband just lost $500 in a poker game….and is afraid to come home.”

Bluffing – An important part of the game

“Who was it?” Johnny asks. “Oh…just my husband” she says in a nonchalant way. “Oh, oh” says Johnny in a panic, “I better get the heck out of here now… where was he?” “RELAX” she says,” he’s on the other side of town playing poker with you”

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR American Hustle Irving and Sydney run a successful con until the FBI busts them. They strike a deal to bring others down for their freedom but a wild FBI agent soon has everything spinning out of control. This movie is loosely based on ABSCAM, the FBI sting that netted many important by David Ramsey people including a number of politicians in the early 80’s. The cast is brilliant and the writing is witty but it’s the clothes and sets that steal the show as they capture the 80’s perfectly. “American Hustle” is more than your typical sting film - it’s a lot of fun to watch.

David’s Video Details Despicable Me 2

Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to stop a powerful new super criminal. At first he resists helping the good guys but he realizes he has stopped being evil since he adopted his three girls. Gru’s minions start disappearing and that maybe connected to the new super villain. The minions are the best and the funniest part of the film, just as they were in the first one. “Despicable Me 2” is funny animated action for all ages.

Prisoners

Saving Mr. Banks Walt Disney has been trying to get the film rights to “Mary Poppins” for 20 years. He has finally convinced the author, P. L. Travers, to come to Los Angeles and meet the writers before saying no again. Ms. Travers dislikes everything about Disney’s movies and if she didn’t need the money wouldn’t be there. Between arguing with the Sherman Brothers about the score and the writers about the script - no animation, she screams - she reflects on her childhood. The cast is amazing; you would swear that Walt himself is on the screen. “Saving Mr. Banks” is a wonderful Hollywood story that will see more than a few nominations this awards season.

When his daughter and her friend disappear after Thanksgiving dinner Keller is desperate to find them. The only suspect is released by the police for lack of evidence. Keller takes the law into his own hands hoping to find his young daughter before it’s too late. The only flaw in this near perfect film is its length - it’s just too long. “Prisoners” will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end while forcing you to ask “what would you do in the same situation?”

The Lone Ranger

A group of Texas Rangers are ambushed and left for dead. Tonto finds them and realizing that one is still alive, nurses him back to health. He advises the surviving Ranger to wear a mask while seeking the outlaws that ambushed them. It follows the original Long Ranger story with only a few changes but does add humor to the action. “The Long Ranger” could have been trimmed by thirty minutes but it does deliver the action you expect. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com.
