or those who have spent a lot of time in casinos, you probably think you’ve heard it all. I’m talking about the grapevine rumors and speculations, like them tightening machines to pay for the new carpet. by Every now and then, however, an odd-sounding Linda Boyd situation turns out to be true. And so it is with casino staff having the ability to change either the pay table or the game on a video poker device with just the flick of a switch. For years I’ve heard players say “they’re in the backroom right now tightening the machines”. I hear either that or a similar version of the same sinister theme. So can they change the game or the pay schedule of a video poker or slot machine without ever touching the device? The answer is - They will be able to with the new server-based technology coming to casinos. In fact, the games in the much ballyhooed City Center in Las Vegas are already wired to include this latest gaming innovation. Server-Based Machines: This new term in the gambler’s lexicon will soon become commonplace to players. It refers to machines that are connected to a central computer system allowing casino staff to change games, denominations and pay schedules with just the flip of a switch from a remote area off the gaming floor. I expect the changeover to be slow with early data indicating most are going to start with just 25% of their inventory and see how it goes. Video Poker: The good news for video poker is, unlike slots, you can determine the expected return (ER) by looking at the payouts on the pay schedules. I have the ER for almost all games you’ll find on the casino floor in the appendix of my book, “The Video Poker Edge”. You will have to take a few minutes to examine the pay schedule instead of assuming the game is the same as it was on your last visit. Games: Make sure you check both the name of that game as well as the denomination before you begin to play. In fact, management can change from video poker to slots or vice versa. (This is a good thing for casinos that went from a mixture of video poker and slots to just slots. Casinos found that business is better when they offer both, but lease agreements or the expense

12 ARIZONA PLAYER FEBRUARY 2010

of the slot device often prevented them from switching back to a choice. Rest assured that in Arizona all machines are required to have a RNG (random number generator) so the pay table alone determines the theoretical odds on video poker machines. Pay Schedules: Even if it’s the same game, you still need to check the pay schedule carefully because they may pay less for a given hand during peak times. For example, instead of returning 45 for a full house the game can return just 40 or less. However, this information will definitely be on the machine and you can access it by simply pushing the “see pays” button. Transition: Just like any other innovation many players look at innovations with a strong dose of skepticism. The word is that the transition process will be slow, approximately 25% of the machines to start with, to make sure customers accept it. The change will require a major expense by the casino for floor wiring unless it’s pre-wired at the time of construction. In today’s economy, I expect management to proceed with caution. Fairness: Many just laughed at the myths about how somebody in the back room pushed a switch changing the games on the floor. Now it’s a reality. However, in April of 2007 the Nevada Gaming Regulators approved the IGT system and both WMS and Bally will have to go through the same process before they ever hit your local casino. There is no way these devices will be gaffed or rigged in any way, but the public’s perception is important as to whether an innovation is successful. Final Thoughts: Years ago people were sure that gamblers wouldn’t accept the new “Ticket-in-Ticket-out” devices. Many did in fact remain devoted to the old coin-droppers. However, the overwhelming majority of players can’t even imagine a return to the days of carrying cups of coins and walking around with dirty hands. I think the same is true of server-based games; it’s definitely the wave of the future and it will be here to stay. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel”. Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. The Second Edition is now available. TJ’S BLACKJACK CORNER ON LINE f you are new to playing blackjack tournaments in the local casinos you will find by TJ that it takes a while to get Jorgensen some experience under your belt. One way to gain a lot of experience in a short time is to play on line Blackjack tournaments. Several sites will let you play for fun or real money. Normally it would take a month to play 8 live tournaments, but you can play about 15 per day on line and gain some valuable experience. The on line site that I play at is Ultimatebet.com which offers both Blackjack and Poker tournaments. Poker Star Phil Hellmuth is their spokesperson, and you will often see Scotty Nygen, Annie Duke and others on the Blackjack side. You can play for fun or real money and I have actually played Phil in several Blackjack tournaments (and beat him!). If you decide to check it out, I play under the name BJ Jedi. The Blackjack tournaments offered are single or multiple round “sit and go’s” made up of 7 players per table and are scheduled for 30 hands, but seldom go that

BLACKJACK TOURNAMENTS

long. This format eliminates the player with the least amount of chips on hands 8, 16, 25 and 30. Only the top two players left get paid. The tournaments also give the player one secret bet to use which is a way to hide the amount of your bet in any given hand. They also offer a surrender option, if you get a bad hand, you can give away 1/2 the bet instead of losing it all. These tools are valuable weapons when used properly and make these tournaments fun and exciting. Multiple two round tournaments seat 14 players at two tables. In the first round you have to finish in the top three at your table to advance to the finals, and only the top three players get paid. There are $1 to $20, games that start when 14 players sign up. There is no one way to win blackjack tournaments. Sometimes crazy big betters get lucky and build such a big lead - no one can catch them. Other times you can win a tournament by losing the least. Although almost all tournaments randomly assign seats, calculating where you will bet on the final hand is also an important factor. What’s the best way to play a tournament? The most consistent way to get in the money is to start

with small bets for the first 4 hands, and then evaluate where you are in terms of the chip lead. This approach will not work all of the time but this method of play is the percentage and smart play here is why - If a player bets $500, and you bet $50 and both lose the hand, (which is the most likely outcome) you will have gained a $450 lead over that player by only risking $50. Of course you could both win the hand and you would be behind that player by $450, which brings me to my next piece of advice. Don’t bet big unless you have to. Unless I am making a catch up bet or trying to margin my opponents to maintain my lead you will always see me betting at or close to the minimum. Finally in tournament play, choose your battles wisely. If you need to make a big bet, time it so you will get maximum value. The best time is when the betting button has just passed you. That way the other players won’t be able to match or margin your bet, thereby getting the maximum value for your bet. While you will get in the money by luck alone on average 2 out of every 7 sit and go tournaments, with the correct tournament strategy, and an understanding of the best way to play a tournacontinued on page 27

FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW

by Marianne Minneci

LAS VEGAS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN

hen you think of a playground for adults, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? For me, it’s Las Vegas. It came to my attention in a recent visit to Sin City that our adult playground is slowly being taken over by children. I found myself tripping over strollers on my way to the poker room, dodging toddlers in the aisles and was almost knocked down by a young boy running with a corn dog in each hand at the Rio Buffet. Later, while playing a video slot machine at the Monte Carlo I turned to find I had an audience consisting of a mom, dad and their four little ones. The kids found it fascinating to watch what happened when I hit the bonus round. At the Rio, if you didn’t know, their cocktail waitresses are scantily clad with cute little lacy numbers that barely cover anything. And about every 30 minutes, loud music begins and the waitresses jump up on platforms and gyrate to the music. At one point there were two young boys looking up at one of these sexy cocktail servers and their eyes were as big as silver dollars.Their parents were standing there like this was an everyday occurrence. What’s wrong with this picture? Las Vegas’ slogan “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas” brings thoughts of “adults” partaking in clandestine activities. Not the case nowadays, perhaps they should modify the phase from the Jamaican tourist bureau to “Las Vegas is for Children”. Now, I have nothing against kids, but there are some places they shouldn’t be and for me, Vegas is one of these places. Las Vegas was built for adults and should stay that way. Bugsy Segal would turn over in his grave if he could see this place now. Since corporate America took over Las Vegas, they have turned it into a circus. Take for instance the latest brain child of the Mirage Corporation,

“City Center”. It looks like the Land of Oz has come to Vegas. These huge structures of glass and metal tower above the strip like a giant behemoth. I found the casino, Aria to be very dark, cold and the people working there “robotic”. We went to the Mandarin tower to check out the upscale shops, Tiffany, Gucci, Fendi and others I couldn’t pronounce. Do they have a clue that money is tight? Who’s shopping in these stores? Most were empty. Even the high-rollers are playing it cautious. Additionally, who do they expect to buy the condos starting at about a cool million? It wouldn’t surprise me to see this place in foreclosure within a year. It will just become another monument to affluence on the Vegas strip. My first visit to Vegas was in 1974 and I’ve had a love affair with the city ever since. Starting with the surge of excitement I felt on that trip when I dropped my first quarter in a slot machine to the butterflies in my stomach now, when I sit down at a poker table at the Bellagio. It has always been a special place where I could go to let loose and forget about my job, bills and any other problems. This is slowly being taken away from me. The mob may have had the run of Las Vegas back in the day, but there was a touch of class to it. All you heard was the clicking of chips, the buzz of slot machines and adults laughing and having fun. Their concentration wasn’t burst by a child just twenty feet away screaming…. “MOMMY…MOMMY….I HAVE TO POTTY!” Parents if you insist on dragging the little ones with you – Here’s an idea - There is a great place you all may enjoy, it’s called “DISNEYLAND”……. Please….go there! Until next time, “Have a Lucky Month”. Write me at azpokerlady@cox.net

LOTTERY NEWS & DRAWS THE PICK

A WINNING PAIR For the past eight years, Harold Koenes and Helen Shanks have shared their Lottery winnings no matter which game they played. When they buy Scratchers, it’s usually the $10 tickets because of the bigger payouts. They usually select their own tickets and if hit some winner, they always share with each other. Harold redeemed Helen’s winning “Crossword” Scratchers ticket and bought “Vegas VIP”. Since Helen was out when he got home, he went ahead and scratched the ticket. At first he thought he’d won $100, but then he saw the comma and a lot of zeroes. He kept staring at the ticket in disbelief and was anxious for Helen to come home. By the time she arrived home, he was a nervous wreck. They examined the ticket, read the game instructions, and realized they had won $100,000. They did not bother to take the ticket back to the store to be scanned, instead, they decided to go directly to the Lottery office. Harold plans to share some of his winnings with his children. He and Helen will use some for an cruise and save the rest. The win is also going to provide fun for Helen as she is in competition with a friend on how much they each win. It appears that with this win, Helen is going to leave her friend in the backstretch.

RICHES IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS Liliana Gonzalez does not purchase Scratchers tickets on a regular basis, but when she has some extra money, she’ll splurge. Recently she had some extra cash in her wallet and, although she usually doesn’t buy $10 tickets, she decided to buy two. Since it was the holiday season, Liliana bought two “Holiday Riches”. She took the tickets home to scratch and was watching TV when she realized that although the first ticket was not a winner the second one looked like it was. She stared at for a while, and then, being a sporadic player, she asked her mother to check it for her. Her mother also thought it looked like a winner. With both of them still feeling unsure, Liliana took the ticket to the store to be scanned and was greatly relieved when the terminal printed out a claim form. She feels the timing of this win couldn’t be better as she will now be able to help out her family as well as pay off bills. Liliana works as a teacher’s aide and loves working with children who have special needs. When she does have spare time, she spends it with her family.

2 BY2 TIMES TWO Antoine Moore moved to Phoenix from Indiana about five months ago and usually played Pick 3 and CA$H4, since these were similar to the games he played in Indiana. He began playing 2by2 about twice a week. A few nights before the 2by2 drawing, he had a dream about his brother, whose birth year is 1981, so he bought three tickets and reversed the 81 to 18 since there are only 26 numbers to choose from in 2by2. When he told his mother about the dream, she told him to go out and buy some more tickets. He bought one more. The day after the drawing, Antoine went to a QuikTrip to grab something for lunch and used the self scanner, which

showed he had a winner. Not daring to hope, he had the clerk scan the ticket and the terminal printed out a claim form. He immediately decided to go the Lottery office to redeem it and called his mother on the way. At the time he redeemed his ticket, he hadn’t yet had a chance to call his brother and tell him the news. His total win before taxes was $80,200. Antoine really feels lucky because his company transferred him to Arizona. He plans to pay some bills and invest the rest. “You don’t get chances like this very often, and I’m going to take advantage of it.” He also may make a little more time for golf.

HORSIN’ H HORSIN ORSIN AROU AROUND

DERBY FEVER H EATING UP

ard to believe there are less than a ddozen weeks before the Kentucky Derby, th by Brian aand although there is Mulligan nno global positioning system thatt can map out the perfect t yett iinvented t d th road to take on the way to that ultimate goal, there are some methods tried and true, and some that just plain don’t work. Things have changed since the golden age of modern racing in the 1970s, when Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed all swept the Crown, but we can all learn from history - so let’s look back, then forward, to successes of Smarty Jones and Afleet Alex. Secretariat started his sophomore season taking the Bay Shore at 7 furlongs in a disputed win. He came back in the mile Gotham, and won under a hand ride. But a blessing in disguise occurred in his next start, when he had an abscess in his mouth and lost the 9-furlong Wood Memorial. The rest is history. Big Red was visually impressive in the Derby and Preakness, then put in arguably the greatest performance ever, winning the Belmont by 31 lengths. Seattle Slew kicked off his historic season winning a Hialeah allowance by 9, parlayed the Flamingo Stakes and Wood, before reeling off the hat trick as the 10th Triple Crown winner, and first unbeaten winner of that feat.

I had the pleasure of watching Affirmed’s quest in person at Santa Anita in 1978. He opened up the year taking an allowance by 5. He repeated in the San Felipe, under Wonderkid Stevie Cauthen, who was replaced in the saddle by Laffit Pincay Jr. for the Santa Anita Derby, in which he won by 8 lengths under wraps. Affirmed’s Kentucky Derby win was a thing of beauty, and he held off Alydar in the next 2 legs like a warrior who just refused to lose. Smarty Jones was from the “wrong side of the tracks,” being a Pennslyvania-bred out of a dam who was sired by a sprinter. But he outran his pedigree by winning his first 8 races. He took the Count Fleet on the inner strip at the Big A, wintered in Hot Springs, Ark., and turned the hat trick there taking the Southwest, Rebel and Arkansas Derby. He then handled the slop in Louisville the first Saturday in May, posted his highest career Beyer figure of 118, taking the Preakness, but ran out of octane in the test of champions, getting nailed late by Birdstone in the Belmont. The Cinderella story of Afleet Alex started modestly at 3, also at Oaklawn, as he overcame trouble to win a minor stakes. He folded up like a cheap suit in the Rebel, but freaked by 8 in the Arkansas Derby. Arguably best in Louisville, Alex then posted one of the most amazing athletic feats ever witnessed in the Preakness, before ending his career taking the Belmont by 7 widening lengths. When handicapping this year’s Derby, focus on the proper conditioning and spacing of the races coming to the pinnacle test. Alex had the 3 preps, all at longer distances, before the Derby. Smarty Jones’ connections probably were still just dreaming about the pie in the sky to begin his sophomore year, and he really had no breaks in his training. He took his 2 November

starts at 2, rested about 5 weeks before his next win, got a little breather at Oaklawn, and was still a relatively fresh horse when the wars began. In the most recent times, Barbaro parlayed a Florida Derby win to a 111-winning Beyer figure at Churchill. Street Sense was the only Eclipsewinning juvenile to take the Derby, while Big Brown proved an exception, winning the Derby off just three career starts. Last year proved while they still run races, as Mine That Bird won for fun at a fat 50-1. Coming to the Derby, a horse can not miss an oat. His coat can’t be off, he can’t have a sniffle, he can’t take a bad step. It has to go just about perfectly for a win to materialize. When listening to trainers speak as the Road to the Derby continues, try to read in-between the lines. Some say trainers only lie when their mouths are moving, so put a grain of salt next to every time you hear the words, “We would not trade places with anybody.” There is a reason there has not been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. It is a monumental feat for trainer and horse to be under the scrutiny and spotlight for 5 straight weeks. A horse has to be good enough, and lucky enough, and fit enough, to go a mile-and-a-quarter the first Saturday in May, then ship 500 miles to Baltimore and cut back in distance, then 3 weeks later go a mil-and-a-half with the world looking on. Lookin at Lucky will take tons of action if he makes it to Kentucky on time this year, but he is no cinch, and two horses that should be watched starting now are Jackson Bend, trained by slick Nick Zito, and recent graduate Drosselmeyer, who is bred to run all day long. Lastly, don’t get caught up in the hype about who is SUPPOSED to win or who is the wise-guy horse. There is no such creature. There is no master plan about winning America’s most important race, and those that own don’t always have to pony up gold bullions to get the big race. Consider that Funny Cide, War Emblem, Real Quiet, Silver Charm and Seattle Slew cost collectively only $93,000. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He has probably handicapped more races than any man alive since he set lines on up to 15 tracks a day for all those years. Mulligan also led the other public handicappers in Los Angeles at every meet in SoCal at one time or another during his tenure there. He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Edge of Darkness Thomas Craven is a Boston detective and a single father with a 24 year-old daughter. When she is by David gunned down while standing next to him on his Ramsey doorstep, everyone thinks the killer was after him. While conducting his own investigation, he discovers a far reaching conspiracy of corruption and murder that brings him into contact with a secret government operative whose job it is to clean up evidence. Mel Gibson is at his best and the rest of the cast is just as good. A great story with lots of action, plus a few twists make this, the action thriller to beat this year.

David’s Video Details ZOMBIELAND

This is more a comedy that a horror movie, it’s a spoof of all the zombie movies ever made and it is very funny. Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson make a perfect pair that I would like to see them team up for more movies. There is surprise extended cameo that is priceless. There is some blood and gore but it’s decorative for the situation. This is a fun, funny and incredibly well done movie.

WHITEOUT

From Paris with Love James is the personal aide to the Ambassador in France but on the side he is low-level CIA operative. He wants to advance in the spy game so when he gets an assignment and a partner, he is jazzed. Then he meets his partner, who he first has to get through customs with contraband and then shoots up a restaurant. Before he knows it, he is helping a trigger-happy loose cannon stop a terrorist attack while shooting up Paris. There is a lot of action and some humor but it gets too campy at times. There is a plot twist at the end but you can see it coming. It was fun to see Travolta but I was disappointed in the writing. 26 ARIZONA PLAYER FEBRUARY 2010

ment, you can easily increase your “in the money percentage and make it a profitable experience. Just like basic strategy is used for playing blackjack at your local casino, there also is a correct strategy for playing tournaments. Knowing last hand strategy is critical to your tournament success. This is usually where the most mistakes are made. I couldn’t even tell you how many tournament wins I have “stolen because my opponents didn’t know how to play the final hand. I cover this strategy in my book if you are interested in fine tuning your tournament game. I play at least 400 on line tournaments a month and another 40 live tournaments per year. I have played in over 20,000 tournaments. A substantial amount of my income is derived from these tournaments. I started playing on Ultimatebet.com 4 years ago. Since I had no experience with elimination blackjack I began with play chips. I started with $1000 in play chips and after two months my account was over 1 million. I reasoned that if I could make a profit with play money, I could probably do it with real money. So I cautiously put $50 in my account and within 10 days my balance was over $3,700. My point is - that with a little preparation, patience, study and understanding of the proper way to play tournaments, it is very worthwhile. Until next time, I hope you play winning Blackjack. T.J. The Pastor’s Point

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. So 4 worms were placed into 4 separate jars near his podium The first worm was put into a container of alcohol. The second worm was placed into a container of cigarette smoke. The third worm was dropped into a container of chocolate syrup. And the fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil. At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:

The worm in the jar of alcohol was dead He held up the jar filled with cigarette smoke - that worm was dead The worm in the jar of chocolate syrup was also dead But, the Fourth worm, in good clean soil was still Alive. So the Minister asked the congregation “What did you learn from this demonstration”? A feisty 85 year old named Maxine, sitting in the back of the church, quickly raised her hand and shouted out, “As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate……you won’t have worms!’ The Pastor, unable to control the laughter from his congregation… ended the service.
