Larry Socha won $282,708 when he hit a Wheel of Fortune quarters MegaJackpot at Gila River’s Vee Quiva Casino in La Veen on Saturday, January 9th. The winner, a pilot from Peoria, Arizona, said he and his wife were visiting the casino because they just “needed to get out.” Socha went on to say he was familiar with the winning machine. “[I] always play the Wheel of Fortune [they are] my favorite machines” he said. After investing around $80 into the winning machine, Socha hit the top progressive jackpot. The winner said his luck arrived after a particularly challenging year, and his first thought was of how it will help his family. This MegaJackpot prize is the first to be paid at the casino, as well as the first to hit in Arizona in 2010. Vee Quiva Casino has now paid 19 MegaJackpot prizes since 1998 totaling an impressive $10.8 million. Stay And Play In Beautiful Prescott
Bucky’s Casino Poker Room in Prescott is following up a great 2009 by bringing back two of their most popular No Limit Texas Hold’Em tournaments for 2010. Bucky’s Poker room has the most loyal players in the State and is listening to customer requests for a wider variety of No Limit Texas Hold’Em tournaments, as well as bigger prize pools and more winners. Starting February 10, Wednesday night is the new home to the very popular Deep Stack tournament. And with 1st Place commonly winning over $1,000, the Deep Stack tournament has garnered a faithful following. Players start with $4,000 in chips and have an optional add-on/ re-buy of an additional $2,000 in chips during the first hour. Players that are knocked out of the tournament also have the option of buying back into the tournament during the first hour of play. Blind levels increase every 20 minutes and the top 5 players finish in the money. Starting Sunday, February 14, Bucky’s Poker Room brings you their Texas Hold’Em Bounty tournament, with Super Bounty bonuses. Players earn $15 Bounty Bonuses every time they knock a player out of the tournament. There are also four random Super Bounty Bonuses that increase the bounty amount based on the number of players in the tournament. Players start with $2,000 in chips and play in 15 minute rounds. Along with the collection of Bounty Bonuses, the top 5 players finish in the money. Those playing in one of the many “live action” games available prior to the Sunday Bounty tournament are also welcome to partake in the free lunch buffet offered from 11am-2pm. Warm up prior to the tournament with a game of $2-$8 Spread Limit Texas Hold’Em or the new $2-$150 High Limit Texas Hold’Em game. Dive into the great food on the buffet, while watching sporting events on one of the large TV screens available throughout the Poker Room. Add all these tournaments to the over $350,000 that was given away in 2009 in Bad Beat Jackpots, Aces Cracked, High Hand Promotions, Football Splash Pots, Saturday Progressive Aces Cracked Promotions and you can see why Bucky’s Poker Room is one of the hottest places to play anywhere.

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
by Linda Boyd
Here’s Your Hat, What’s Your Hurry?
ere we are ready for a brand new year and players resolving to start things out on a positive note. Casinos are still vying for your business and in Arizona all signs point to staff going out of their way to make you feel welcome and anxious for a return visit. I think everybody agrees, whether you win or lose, it’s still great to get out of the house and into the chaotic and celebratory atmosphere of a local casino. Even though neighborhood casinos covet your patronage, you’ll want to make sure you don’t wear out your welcome. Proper protocol for casino-play in general, and video poker in particular, makes the whole outing more fun plus you won’t have to worry about being shown the door on a current or future visit. Persona Non Gratis: You may think that given the current economic crunch casino management will put up with anything just to keep your business. If that’s what you think, then you’re incorrect. Some people have a gambling addiction and the casino doesn’t want these people playing. Also, some gamblers either have one too many or, even though they’re sober, are so obnoxious they chase away other players. None for the Road: I’m all for “share the road” programs, but only with sober drivers. If you notice another player making a drunken trek towards their car, make sure you notify casino staff. They don’t want inebriated customers coming from their casino any more than you do. Banned Player List: Vegas casinos are notorious for their “black list” of undesirables: mostly casino cheats or card sharks. Locally, those who have a gambling addiction as well as those caught on tape trying to rip-off another player make the unwanted roster. These people will be banned and when discovered, management will ask them to leave. Respect Staff: Gambling is an emotional activity; that’s why you’ll want to stay within a predetermined budget. So, if things aren’t going your way, just leave and come another day. Never take out your frustrations on a member of the casino’s staff.
Video Poker Protocol: Just like the machines on the casino’s floor have changed, so has appropriate behavior. No more trays to hold either coins or somebody’s cigarette ashes, but, also, no more cups around to save your seat. Check for Credits: Believing that some stranger left credits just for you to play is a stretch. If you notice the device has no player but there’s a slot card or credits, then notify an attendant who will secure the card/credits and let you know if it’s okay to play.
12 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2010
Long Absences: If you’re going to be gone for a long time, remove your card and credits so that somebody else can play. Sometimes machines are shut down in Nevada so players can go to eat, but this is rarely an acceptable practice in Arizona casinos. Electronic Devices: Players are allowed cell phones with cameras but not electronic tutorial programs or any electronic devices for that matter.
Welcome Back: Thank Host/Others: More and more local casinos are using discretionary comps for frequent local players. Ask for a host if you’ve been playing for a long time with a slot card inserted. Sometimes your play doesn’t qualify for a free meal or show, but that’s not the host’s fault. If they can offer you something they will; if not, then you should be respectful anyway. Keep in mind that they’re just following the rules of that property and it’s never personal. Tip Appropriately: Today there are fewer hand-paid jackpots than in the past. In fact, most under $1,200 (the amount that generates an IRS reporting form), are simply added to your credit total. However, when you receive a hand-pay or a drink it’s customary to tip the staff member who brings the money or beverage. On average $5 per $1,000 for jackpots, and at least a dollar per drink, even for non-alcoholic beverages. If you ask for something special, like an attendant to watch your machine or security to escort you to your car, then a few dollars tip is in order. (I always tip the bartender when I order food to go from the casino’s Steakhouse.)
Final Thoughts: This coming year you can expect your Arizona casinos to be right on par with those in Nevada, offering players top entertainment, restaurants and games. You’ll want to join in on all our local casinos have to offer and make sure you remain on the mailing list for 2010!

TJ’s Blackjack corner How hen you ask someone how they did at the casino, how many times by TJ have you heard, “I was up Jorgensen $600 but left $150 down, I should have left when I was ahead”? If you want to know why this happens, and how to make sure you walk out a winner, keep reading. If you randomly flip a coin there are two possible outcomes, heads or tails. Each is as likely as the other to come up. If you were wagering on the outcome of one flip it would be a 50/50 gamble. Let’s say that you flipped a coin four times and all resulted in a heads. If we flipped the coin one more time now what would be the probability of getting another heads? If you answered still 50% you would be correct, because the previous result has no influence on the next flip, it will always be a 50/50 gamble. If we randomly flip a coin ten times we would expect the results to be five heads and five tails, but most likely we would get between four heads and six tails or vice versa, or somewhere in between. This would be known as a “short term” trial - in fact some may even get ten heads or ten tails. Extreme results are possible in the short run. However if we randomly flip a coin 1000 times, known as a “long run” trial the results would be very close to 500 tails and 500 heads. The more the coin is flipped, the closer you will get to the expected outcome. This is a simplified explanation of how casinos make money year after year. When you walk into a casino all of the games have a negative expectation for the player. For example if slot machines are your game and they
14 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2010
To Walk Out a Winner
offer an 87% payback, you can expect to lose $13 for every $100 you put in play in the “long run”. Notice I used the term “long run”. This means that in the “short run” you may start out hitting a couple of jackpots and get ahead, but the longer you play, just like flipping the coin, you start approaching the “long run” expected outcome of losing $13 for every $100. This is why you hear players say, “I was ahead but walked out behind” The longer you play the more likely you will walk out a loser. If you are lucky enough to get ahead during your playing session to avoid walking out a loser, take your original investment and part of your winnings and put them in your pocket. You can play with the rest, but if you lose it, have enough self discipline not to get back into your profit. Hopefully understanding long run probabilities and now knowing that the longer you play the more likely you will lose, helps you to walk out a winner. If you are playing for entertainment (which, unless you are a pro is the only reason you should be playing) always set a limit that you can afford to lose and stick to it. If you lack self discipline leave your ATM and credit cards at home. Don’t chase lost money with more money, it is always financially disastrous. There is a reason that there are no professional slot machine players. It’s because you cannot overcome the house advantage, the casino will eventually have their edge. You might wonder, what is the best game to play? The Casino game with the lowest negative expectation for the player is Blackjack. If a player puts in the time to learn basic strategy and plays it perfectly, the casino will have about a 1/2 percent or .52% advantage depending
on the rules and number of decks used. This means in the long run the player can expect to lose 52 cents for every $100 put in play. However a blackjack player can mathematically overcome the house advantage by learning a card counting and betting strategy to turn the tables on the casino. This is the only way that in the long run you can expect to be a winner, month after month, year after year. It’s not a question of if you will win - just when. In my book “Beating the Casino at their Own Game” I teach you how to overcome the house advantage by counting cards and using a playing and betting strategy based on your true count. There are 41 variations from basic strategy; the one most used is when you have 16 vs. a dealer up card of a ten. When counting cards there is a point that the correct play is to stand in this situation. I win on average seven out of every twelve times I play. If you want to be more than a recreational player, learning to count cards is the only way to mathematically overcome the casino edge. What Happens Here Is Better Than Vegas
appy New Year to everyone, I hope this year brings health and prosperity to all. The past year was difficult one for many, but thanks to Casino Arizona’s poker room and the generosity of the players, the holidays were joyful for a lot of people. by Marianne Minneci In November, Casino Arizona had its tournament to benefit St. Mary’s Food bank. This event had 247 entrants and raised over $6,000 for the charity. In December, the casino held its annual “toy Drive” tournament to make Christmas for the children in the Salt River Pima Maricopa Community a merry one. The tournament had 449 entrants and more than 1,000 toys were donated. The poker staff at Casino Arizona wants to personally thank all of its players for their continued support of these charities. Casino Arizona continues to be the place for tournaments - I know, because I went to Vegas over the Holidays thinking that there would be a lot of action there, but to my surprise, I seemed to have left all of the action back in Arizona. In most venues it was hard to even get a game started. That’s when I came to the realization, why go anywhere else when you have the best right here? Casino Arizona’s 2010 tournament line-up is outstanding with something for everyone. lottery news & DRAWS Early Bird Winners Twenty lucky people got a head start on having extra money to spend for the holidays when their Millionaire Raffle ticket numbers were drawn for the early bird drawing. There were $5,000 winners from many areas of Arizona: Chandler, Flagstaff, Glendale, Heber, Laveen, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sun City West and Tucson. Bonita Rich of Mesa only bought one Millionaire Raffle ticket, and apparently that’s all she needed. She has played every Raffle since it began because she likes the odds. However, she knows that even with good odds, she’s extremely lucky, and she intends to save all of it. Donald Hlousek of Sun City West has also played every Raffle game, and he’s also positive that one day he’s going to win the Powerball. He bought one ticket and then, about a week later, bought another one, which turned out to be the winner. He plans to use his early bird winnings to put dual pane windows in his house.
Now, Billie Patterson is a different story, because she hasn’t played the raffle for two years. She decided to try again this year and was very excited about her win. She plans to share with her family and put the rest away for taxes. Shelby Rowe of Phoenix bought six tickets because of the special offer of the free Powerball ticket. She woke up the morning after the draw and had a feeling she’d won. She plans to give some to her daughters and use the rest for Christmas. William Winiesderffer III of Chandler was so thrilled with his win, he could hardly stand it. He’s been playing the raffle Jessica Miller since its inception, but never won anything. He bought one ticket and had a good feeling about it. He was right. “The timing of this win is great as my wife has surgery pending in the near future.”
A Special Feeling Roy Hooper was grocery shopping with his wife when suddenly he had a feeling that he should buy some Powerball tickets. He doesn’t play on a regular basis, but when the jackpot is high, he tends to buy more tickets than he usually does. And since he had a feeling he should buy them, he bought 50 Quick Picks on Powerball for the drawing of Oct. 7. The morning after the drawing, Roy checked his numbers in the newspaper, but for some reason, thought he only had four numbers. He then went to check online, and his grandson checked the ticket, while Roy read him the numbers. Then his grandson asked him to read the numbers to him again and all of a sudden there were five numbers not four as he originally thought; “Then all hell broke loose.” His wife came running in to the room thinking both of them were crazy and were just fooling around. Roy who works in real estate said, “It’s fun to be a winner.” The timing of this win was great. They put the money into the bank, then took the whole family out for a celebration dinner, to tell them all the good news. 18 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2010
Judith Foster of Phoenix knew exactly how she was going to spend her winnings as soon as she knew she had a winning ticket. She’s very active in St. Michael’s Indian School in Northern Arizona. She also has two “angels” from St. Michaels that she is sponsoring, and the first thing she was going to do was shop for them. Then, she was going to spend some of her winnings for the St. Vincent De Paul’s Food Bank. These winnings are going to make for a wonderful holiday for a number of people.

HORSIN’ AROUND his is not only a great time of the year for my sister, who flees Cape May, New Jersey by Brian to go to Florida for Mulligan three months but also for horse players that have an eye toward the Triple Crown and thrive to see the year’s action at Gulfstream. The Sunshine State got back on track the first Sunday of January for and the meet will go to April 24. Those that have aspirations for the Kentucky Derby will be recognized and will try to springboard from this meet to the classic events. At the end of this month, the annual Sunshine Millions Program will be run featuring Cal-breds and Florida-breds aiming for big dollars to the tune of $1.8 million. The highlight of the meeting will be on March 20, for the $750,000 Florida Derby at a mile and an eighth for the sophomores pinning their hopes on the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown. If the opening day card, where 105 horses were entered, is any indication, this meet will surely offer astute bettors tons of opportunities to make a score. The race I commented on for the Racing Form was fully subscribed with 16 including some “also entered” and you could have gone a plethora of ways for a key horse. As the meet went on last year both the grass and the main track played rather fair with an edge on

the grass for those that could stalk or rally. More importantly, it may be more beneficial for players to concentrate on the human element that makes things go round rather than get caught up in what may or not be a conceived track or racing bias. Those idiosyncrasies are evident every day and are up to interpretation so lets examine the facts of the top pilots, the projected hot new rider and the guys that really stir the drink, the trainers. First, the chauffeurs: Jose Lezcano had his coming out party last year at this meet winning the title with 71 happy endings and almost 20 more than the next guy. He will be challenged every step of the way this year by veterans like Elvis Trujillo, Kent Desormeaux, Jorge Velazquez and possible 2009 Eclipse Award winner Julien Leparoux. The latter excels in getting horses to relax especially on grass and after winning three Breeders’ Cup races will be much in demand. The new kid that could be a ‘sure hit’ is Luis Saez. The apprentice held his own with the veterans all 2009 at Calder but has not forgotten his roots of sleeping in the tack room in Panama waiting for his big chance. That chance came when he graduated from the famous Laffit Pincay Jr. Jockey School and he has success story ridden all over him. As for the conditioners, the usual suspects of Todd Pletcher, Ken McPeek, Nick Zito, Bill Mott and Marty Wolfson should all vie for the top slots this winter but a stalwart to watch is former rider Wesley Ward. He finished third in the standings
last year but popped at a sensational 34.3% clip. His forte is young horses and first time starters but know that he will be saddling live babies all winter. Everything Peter Walder sends out must be respected off his 30% win clip last year but there are a few off-brand guys that need to be followed. Angel Penna was 6 for 23 at the meet last year and his average winner paid over $26. Joe Orseno hit with nearly 19% of his starters but the average price was a solid $21 and change and Michael Matz, of Barbaro fame, popped with an average price of nearly $22. Consider one word or caution regarding classy horseman Nick Zito. Know that of his 69 turf starters through the end of the last meeting at Gulfstream, he greeted only 2 in the charmed circle. Like anything else in life, horse bettors must use common sense when trying to differentiate action from one meeting to another but with the proper homework and with the proper tools like a year or 2 archive of Racing Forms, the winners able to be unearthed will surely pay for the blood sweat and tears on the kitchen floor - Happy Hunting. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He has probably handicapped more races than any man alive since he set lines on up to 15 tracks a day for all those years. Mulligan also led the other public handicappers in Los Angeles at every meet in SoCal at one time or another during his tenure there. He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.
gaming news NBC Reality Show may tape in Camp Verde Erika Landin and Donna Goodrow casting producers for NBC’s reality show “Losing It with Jillian,” met with Chairman Thomas Beauty on January 6, 2010, to discuss the possibility of taping an episode at the Yavapai-Apache Nation. Tribal members from within the Nation were recruited to be a part of the casting call and were filmed as part of the casting call process. The casting call came about as a result of Chairman Beauty’s desire to help his People become healthier. With health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure and morbid obesity on the rise within the Nation, Chairman Beauty directed his staff to research the possibility of conducting a Biggest Loser contest within the Nation. Executive Secretary, Kim Nightpipe contacted the producers of “The Biggest Loser,” never believing that she’d receive a response. Much to her surprise, within days of submitting her e-mail, she was contacted by Erika Landin casting producer to set-up a meeting with the Nation to discuss the possibility of taping a show at the Yavapai-Apache Nation. The meeting was a first for the producers of the show as they stated, “We’ve never gone to a location to cast, normally we hold large casting calls and you have to come to us. This is the first time we’ve come to you.” “With the filmed interviews completed, our next step is to wait and see if Jillian Michaels will accept us as one of her clients” states Fran Chavez,
Public Relations Manager for the Yavapai-Apache Nation. “We expect to receive notice from the producers by February 5. We’re very excited and hopeful that Jillian will choose us as one of her clients.” In the series, Michaels invades a different family every week to give them her characteristic brand of tough love. She will get to the bottom of the issues each family member faces -- ones that affect their health and happiness -- and will arm them with the tools necessary to make life-altering changes. The series will also feature celebrity chef Curtis Stone who will enhance Michaels’ efforts by ridding the family’s kitchen of all unhealthy food and educating them on proper nutrition, healthy ingredients, cooking tips and recipes. “Jillian is the world’s leading lifestyle expert with a signature style all her own,” said Telegdy. “Increasing numbers of families seem to need a motivational boost, and we know that Jillian is an awesome force of nature who will help them transform their lives from the inside out.” “It’s time for Americans to stop making excuses for being unhealthy and take back their lives. Jillian is going to show them exactly how to do just that starting in their own homes,” said executive producer Mark Koops. NBC has partnered with popular health and wellness expert Jillian Michaels (“The Biggest Loser”) along with “The Biggest Loser” producers Mark Koops and Howard T. Owens of Reveille and former “Oprah” executive producer Ellen Rakietan for a riveting new life-changing alternative series “Losing It with Jillian.”

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR David’s Top Ten by Films of David Ramsey
1. Up
2009
Uhura, Sulu and the rest of the gang. Will they be able to pull together and save the Universe? The acting is very good with Karl Urban outstanding as ‘Bones’, the story is derivative and borrows from many episodes of the series and other Sci-Fi films but it works.
4. (500) Days of Summer
world’s governments – unless Holmes and Watson can stop it. There is more action than a typical a Sherlock Holmes film and it works. The cast is perfect and the writing is very good and the action will have you on the edge of your seat.
6. Paris 36
never in question. The family of a classmate took him giving him a stable home life and set him up with a tutor. He became an outstanding offensive lineman and was heavily recruited by major colleges. The cast is perfect and the writing makes you care without hitting you over the head. Family is what it’s about and it is perfect for the entire family.
8. Inglourious Basterds
Carl is 78-years-old, lonely and about to be forced from his home to make way for an office building but he has other plans. One morning he surprises everyone by tying so many balloons to his home that it rises in the air and takes off. He discovers Russell, an 8-year-old wilderness scout, is along for the ride but is unable to land before they have gone too far. They make an unlikely pair as they bond while trying to get to Carl’s destination – a cliff overlooking an isolated waterfall in South America. Their delightful adventures include talking dogs, a lost explorer and discovering a new species of bird. Everything about this film is perfect.
2. The Hangover
The morning after the bachelor party three guys wake up in a trashed Vegas hotel suite to find the groom missing but there is tiger in the bathroom, a chicken in the living room and a baby in the closet. They can’t remember a thing from the night before and think that if they can discover what 26 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2010
happened last night they can find their missing friend. As they unravel the night it gets weirder and funnier. The cast is perfect and the writing is hysterical. The director of “Old School” is back with the funniest film I have seen in years.
3. Star Trek
Tom is in love with Summer but more than that he is love with the idea Summer. Tom believes in a cosmic oncein-a-lifetime kind of love but Summer doesn’t believe true love exists. This is no typical Hollywood romcom, it is an insightful look at love and relationships. It is funny and touching and one of the best romantic films in years.
5. Sherlock Holmes
The aging stage manager of a theatre in Paris is charged with murder and in his confession he flashes back to New Years Eve 1935. After the theatre is closed he and a group of friends take it over and run it as a co-op with a beautiful new star and mob investors but trouble is always right around the corner. This is a wonderful hopeful film, with great performances.
7. The Blind Side
In occupied France and American commando teams terrorizes the Nazis, a British spy is sent to kill the leadership of the Reich and a young woman plots vengeance against Hitler. They all come together at the premiere of a propaganda film with explosive results. There are scenes that are so real the tension will knock you out. This is one of Tarantino’s best films.
9. It Might Get Loud
George Kirk takes command of his starship just before it is destroyed by a superior enemy vessel and managers to save over 300 crew members including his new born son, James. Twenty five years later the same vessel attacks the planet Vulcan and a fleet of starships manned by cadets speed to the rescue. On board with Kirk are Spock, Bones,

A Bittersweet Win On November 12, 2009, Janeese Cook bought a Quick Pick ticket on The Pick with five lines. She then put the ticket in her purse and promptly put it out of her mind as she was busy thinking about the birthday celebration for her husband planned for Saturday, Nov. 14; the same night as the drawing for The Pick. A week later, on November 19, Janeese remembered she hadn’t checked her tickets, so she went online. She was sure she had made a mistake, so she asked her husband Dwight to check. They kept coming up with the same winning combination of numbers. So they checked to see how many winners there were – the website showed only one! They simply couldn’t believe they were holding a winning jackpot ticket worth $3,100,000. Janeese and Dwight took the time to tell their sons, then rushed to the hospital to visit Dwight’s father. He had not been doing well, but when Dwight told him they’d won The Pick, he whispered, “How much?” That made everyone’s day. On November 20, the Cooks came to the Lottery office to redeem their ticket. They hadn’t taken time to make any plans – they were still in shock. After a Lottery employee spoke with the couple, they were given an informational brochure and sent off to a restaurant to take some time to think about what they wanted to do. They returned two
hours and six phone calls later and said they’d decided to take the cash option. Janeese received a check in the amount of $1,252,466.60 after taxes. Since there wasn’t enough time to schedule a press conference, the Cooks agreed to return Monday morning. They arrived promptly at 10am with a number of family members, including Dwight’s mother. It turned out to be a bittersweet weekend for the Cook family, as Dwight’s father passed away over the weekend. At the beginning of the press conference, Jeff Hatch-Miller, Executive Director of the Lottery, made mention of the special circumstances and paid tribute to Dwight’s father. After the couple was presented with their ceremonial check, the Lottery then presented Dwight with a birthday cake and a birthday serenade. The Cooks have already contacted several financial advisors and will decide which one they feel comfortable with. Dwight will continue to work, but Janeese plans to turn in her resignation. Right now, their first priority is to be sure Dwight’s mother is settled and comfortable.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS
A corporate executive met a beautiful girl during a convention in Las Vegas and agreed to spend the night with her for $500. The next morning as he was leaving, he told her that he didn’t carry that much cash with him, but he would have his secretary write a check and mail it to her, calling the payment “rent for apartment”. On returning to Arizona he regretted what he had done, realizing that the night of pleasure had not been worth the price. So he had his secretary send a check for $250 and enclose the following note:

I am not sending the amount agreed upon, because when I rented the place, I was under the impression that: #1 - it had never been occupied; #2 - there was plenty of heat; and #3 - it was small enough to make me feel cozy and at home. However, I soon realized that: #1 - it had been previously occupied, #2 - there wasn’t any heat, and #3 - it was entirely too large.
