gaming news WHEEL OF FORTUNE HIT IN TUCSON

Free Buffet for Military Personnel

Vicki Baietto won a $138,270 Wheel of Fortune MegaJackpot on a quarter machine on May 2nd at Casino Del Sol in Tucson. The winner, an accountant from Rio Rico, Arizona, said she had visited the casino on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday was her lucky day. “The third time was a charm!” she commented. Baietto went on to say that it was her husband who chose the winning machine for her. “[He] talked me into going over to play” she said. After investing only $20, the Megajackpot winner reported being stunned to find she had won the top progressive prize. Although she has no specific plans for her winnings, Baietto did say she was excited to share news of her win with her sister who commented “send me an airline ticket!” This Wheel of Fortune MegaJackpot is the first to be paid so far this year at the casino, and the second paid on the Wheel of Fortune quarters progressive. To date, Casino Del Sol has awarded 3 MegaJackpot prizes totaling nearly $640,000 million in prize money since 2004. Casino Del Sol and sister property Casino of the Sun, have

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

The Changing Face of Video Poker

t wasn’t too long ago when American Casino Guide’s Steve Bourie did a podby Linda Boyd cast with me entitled “The Changing face of Video Poker”. www.americancasinoguide.com/podcasts. shtml February, 2010. Once the recession hit, differences in video poker and other games were inevitable; however, neither players nor casino brass were immediately sure of what they would entail. Management teams realized that they had to cut some corners and at the same time make frequent visits by their base players affordable and attractive. Not so easy to do both. VIDEO POKER GAMES: More than ever you will see devices labeled as “nickel” games that cost as much as a fifty-cent game per hand to play. For example, a 10-play machine requires a max bet of $2.50 per hand to receive the full payout on a royal flush. (800 to 1 with a max bet, but only 250 to 1 with short-coin bets.) This can be a real bankrollbuster if you don’t get some good hands at the beginning of your session. In addition to more multi-hand games on the casino floor, you’ll find a lot of format options even though the core game is a classic. For example, Jacks or Better is an old standby, but it may be a “Super Times Pay” version. These are fun and bring excitement to games that can be boring, but they cost extra coins. Some, like “Multi-Strike,” require strategy adjustments as

10 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2010

well. Make sure you know all the rules for the new format before you deposit money into the device. SERVER-BASED GAMES: I wrote about this in an earlier column. Look for more games that can be changed from a remote area off the casino floor in the future. This can be good for players since the technology is definitely regulated and on the up and up. The main thing gamblers have to watch is the possibility of pay table changes, especially during busy times. The good news is that video poker players will know the expected return (ER) by taking the information with them when they go to a casino. (Free removable pay schedules for a few hundred games are in my book, “The Video Poker Edge”.) Be aware that the machine will give you the pay schedule for winning hands (simply push the “see pays” button) but will not give the ER percentage. This is a huge advantage over traditional slots where there’s no way to know the ER, even with identical-looking side-by-side machines. The chips within can be quite different. For example, one “Mr. Woo” could have a 92% ER percentage while the “Mr. Woo” right next to it could have an 86% chip. There’s really no way to know with slot machines, while with video poker devices there’s a random number generator (RNG) so that the pay schedule alone determines the ER. MAILERS: There are definitely more casino offers in my mailbox than ever before. I’m surprised my mailman isn’t leaving Gamblers’ Anonymous literature for me. (Just kidding) Unfortunately they’re often for cheesy deals, like from casinos where I

rarely play offering $2 off their buffet. Simply sort through the offers and toss some in the circular file. PROMOTIONS: I’ve definitely noticed a reduction in my bounceback cash (money you must redeem in person; the purpose is to get you into the casino) as well as my mailed food comps. Even the promotional prizes are for less valuable merchandise. Still, they haven’t eliminated promos and I don’t expect them to in the future. I never considered myself lucky enough to ride away in a new car and I’m happy to win $100 gift certificates. I’d rather have 20 chances to win a smaller award then throw all my eggs in one basket and go for the elusive Lexus. FINAL THOUGHTS: I find it surprising that casinos continue to spring up nationwide. With the current economy in mind you’d think there would be no way so many can stay in business. Truthfully, some are so over-leveraged, especially in Las Vegas they may not survive. Still, many Arizona casinos continue to thrive because they give players their money’s worth and are willing to make changes consistent with the times.

Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel”. Her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and her free strategy cards for the most popular games. The Second Edition has a 2010 publication date and is now available at bookstores, amazon.com, or Square One Publishers www.squareonepublishers.com Toll Free: 877-900-BOOK

EDDIE MONEY BENEFIT CONCERT

The Gathering Restaurant and Bar at Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde held an All-YouCan-Eat Spring Fling Cook-Out on Sunday, April 18. Grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, corn on the cob and all the picnic fixings were served. The event featured a free concert by the Toucan Eddy Band, with dancing on The Gathering’s outside patio. This band has been entertaining audiences in Northern Arizona for over three decades. Folks who follow this band have been dancing and enjoying their “rhythm and roll” style of covers and originals since singer/songwriter Bert Campbell purchased the famous Old Creek Tavern in Sedona in 1980. Toucan Eddy became the house band, but they also travelled around Arizona playing R&B, Rock, Funk, Latin and Country Rock. Dale Caddell, the original lead guitar player is back with the band after spending 15 years performing with local favorite “Limbs Akimbo.” Campbell sold the Oak Creek Tavern and the band didn’t play together for nearly 10 years before reuniting in the 90’s. Michael Reed, saxophonist, guitarist and vocalist is another well-known local musician has been a member of Toucan Eddy for 12 years and he also plays with the group “The Knuckelheads.” Singer and bassist Teddy Rocha, the newest member of band, has been performing locally with groups including “Major Lingo” and “Combo Deluxe”. Rounding out the band is drummer Clay Harper of “The Neon Raiders.” Toucan Eddy, who now are calling the band “The Tukes” have plans to go back into the studio this summer to record an all original CD including dance songs, ballads and songs with a “message”. lottery news They’re Hot – “Sizzlin’ Red Seven’s” Douglas Johnson is a retired firefighter living in Utah and has been playing Arizona Scratchers for about three years. The Sizzlin’ Red Seven’s has been a lucky game for him, as he always gets something back when he plays; which he then reinvests in more of the same. This time he purchased two tickets. Dolores Garcia usually purchases one dollar or two dollar tickets, but she had a feeling about this Douglas Johnson game, so she bought one ticket. Each of these winners ended up winning the top prize of $50,000. Doug and his wife each scratched a ticket. On one previous occasion, they thought they had a winning ticket, but misread it, so when his wife finished scratching off her ticket and showed it to him, he was a little skeptical. When they finally realized it was a winner, it took two days before they could calm down enough to watch television.

Dolores Garcia also scratched her ticket at home, saw the amount of $50,000 and promptly checked the ticket a few more times. When she was sure it was a winning ticket, she told her husband. Of course, he had to check it a few more times to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. Then she took the ticket to the store to be scanned – “I wanted to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating.” She said Dolores Garcia Both winners have very different ideas as to how they are going to use their winnings. Doug plans to pay off some bills and perhaps plan a trip to Hawaii – “We love it there.” Dolores has a full-time job taking care of her family, and she is also responsible for her father and her sisters. So her winnings are going to be used to catch her up on some bills and save the rest for a rainy day.

Her Son Saves the Day

History-Making Jackpot Claimed

Las Vegas Man Finds Luck Here

Olga Gilmore was out of cigarettes, so she went to the store. While she was there, she bought three Scratchers tickets, all of which were winners. Her Olga Gilmore big win, however, was $100,000 -- the top prize on “Super Cash Crossword.” When Olga first scratched the ticket, she misread the prize legend at the bottom of the ticket and thought it was a loser. She asked her husband to double check it; he thought she had won $30. The next morning, her son looked at the ticket, very carefully counted all of the red words and found six of them. All of a sudden, they were looking at a ticket worth $100,000! Just to be sure, she had her son take it to the store to be scanned. When her son returned and gave her the claim form, it gave her reason to believe it was real. Olga and her husband were extremely happy they had their son check the ticket. “As we discovered, it’s way too easy to miscount the words.” In fact, it wasn’t until she came to the Lottery office and had the ticket validated that she fully believed it; and of course that’s when she started to feel shaky. However, she also realized that although she had always considered herself to be unlucky, with this win, that statement was no longer true. First on the list of things to do is finish remodeling the house and take care of the family.

The largest Pick 5 jackpot in the game’s history, $410,000, was claimed in late March by Don Whitten of Arizona City. On his way home, Don stopped at a store, gave the clerk a $20 bill and had $10 in change due him. On a whim, he told the clerk that he wanted to use the $10 for a one-line Quick Pick on the Pick 5 for ten draws. Don and his wife were busy, so it took him a couple of days to check his ticket. He went online and started to check, and the longer he looked at the numbers, the better they looked. He said that after he saw that the first three numbers matched, he checked for the fourth number apprehensively. When he discovered that the fourth number also matched, he was afraid to look for the fifth. Finally, he glanced at the fifth number, and sat there staring at the computer in disbelief. Don called out to his wife, “Come look at this.” He then had her check the numbers on the ticket as he looked on the computer and read them to her - No mistake - The draw date and all five numbers matched. As soon as Don and his wife calmed down, he signed the back of the ticket, and headed for Phoenix. When they arrived at the Lottery, although they were excited, his wife commented that she wouldn’t believe it until she saw the actual check. Don is retired from the military and, since then, repairs gas turbine engines to keep busy. Since they had previously decided how they were going to use their winnings, once they had their check, they could look forward to implementing their plans. They intend to pay off bills, including the mortgage on their home, and invest the rest. They appear to have everything under control.

Thomas Jarrad of Las Vegas comes to Arizona about every three months and on holidays to visit family. While here, he always purchases Powerball tickets Thomas Jarrad using his own set of lucky numbers and some Quick Picks. Since he purchases his tickets for four draws, he doesn’t always get around to checking them right away. With the unsigned ticket in his wallet, Thomas returned to his home in Nevada. It wasn’t until much later he remembered his Powerball ticket and went online to check his numbers. You can imagine his surprise when he discovered two of his lines were winners. Then he went about finding out how much he had actually won. The two winning lines turned out to be Quick Picks and not his set of lucky numbers. One Quick Pick matched the five numbers drawn Dec. 26 for the second place prize of $200,000. The other winning line matched 3 numbers for an additional $3. He was in his office for a long time checking the numbers. His wife was beginning to worry, when he suddenly called out to her, “You’re not going to believe this.” She didn’t. Recently, Thomas was once again in Phoenix, only this time he came to the Lottery office to redeem his ticket. He was thrilled with his win and looked forward to paying off bills and will most likely save the rest of his winnings. He has no intention of quitting his job with the State of Nevada.

24 hours or less, you will get extreme swings in the flow of cards, mainly because they are not randomly shuffled. I was leaving a casino and noticed that new cards were just put into play at a $5 game. I sat down and bought in for $20. After winning the first 3 hands in a row, I increased my bet to $7.50 even though mathematically my card count favored the house. I kept winning and kept increasing my bet size. I ended up winning 31 hands in a row and was up to $25 a hand before I lost one. By counting cards I know what the composition of the remaining cards, large or small. I can tell you that in this particular instance all of the tens were clumped together, and that is the reason that I experienced the run. HORSIN’ AROUND

by Brian Mulligan

Start At The Beginning

or the novice bettors, horse racing can appear to be overwhelming at the start. There is the unusual jargon, the appearance of hustle bustle and the energy of the horses themselves. To get a grip on the game, and to make that first step toward making winning bets, one has to figure out the nuts and bolts. Before we get into the specifics, a word has to go out to Super Saver for his Derby win, and the great ride by Calvin Borel. Talk about your rags-to-riches great American story. Borel has not been inflated in his ego by all his recent success, and that bodes well for future opportunities for him, but he may have gone a tad too far predicting “Saver” would win the Triple Crown. It has not been done since 1978 for a reason. It’s extremely hard, and the stars, moon and sun must be aligned perfectly for it to happen. As an introduction to this key subject here, let’s start with the track itself, how most of them are configured and what to look for when watching a race or handicapping. There are keys right there that can make the difference between winning at the windows or going home early, and if you don’t know what you are looking at, or what you are supposed to be looking for, then you are at a distinct disadvantage.

Most of the major tracks are one-mile ovals. They include famous venues like Santa Anita, Gulfstream and Churchill. Belmont Park is a oneand-a-half mile oval. The most common distance to race is 6 furlongs. A furlong is an 8th of a mile, thus 6 furlongs is three-quarters of a mile.

Poles, and knowing where they are located, are keys to understanding the game. When one looks at a particular track as a whole, there will be numerous poles around the track. Poles are so named because of their distance from the finish line. So the 3/4 pole is 6 furlongs from the finish, the 1/4 pole is 2 furlongs from the finish. The 1/8 pole is an 8th of a mile or one furlong from the finish. In reviewing past performances, the stretch call is always an 8th of a mile from the finish.

Poles, and knowing where they are located, are keys to understanding the game. They are constantly referred to in the past performances, and in the reporting of the race in the charts. Poles are color-coded, to make them easier to recognize in the heat of battle. The 1/8 poles are green and white, the 1/16 poles are black and white and the 1/4 poles are red and white. Once one can figure out where each pole is, the running of the race can become crystallized by just reading the past performances and the comments in the notes. If a horse was “steadied” at the 1/4 pole, the handicapper knows that the horse ran into a problem with 2 furlongs to go. If a horse was forced to “take up” at the 1/8 pole, one knows that the horse had to stop his stride at a crucial part of the race. Different tracks and different distances present the handicapper with new problems. If a horse draws the rail going in a mile race on a track like Santa Anita, which is a mile in circumference, the horse has a quick run to the 1st turn and a built-in advantage, IF he has the speed from the gate to take advantage of the inside post. Conversely, if a horse is in post 8 in a mile race on a mile track, he will need to expend serious energy in order to make or challenge for the lead, because of the quick run to the 1st bend. Aqueduct is a 1 1/8-mile oval. Thus, if a race is carded at 1 1/8 miles, the horse that draws the rail has a distinct advantage, if he has speed and is able to break cleanly and reach the 1st turn quickly. The configuration of tracks and turf courses must be understood and utilized properly, when attempting to assess the chances of a particular horse, and if you are blind to these nuances, you will see your bankroll dwindle. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He has probably handicapped more races than any man alive since he set lines on up to 15 tracks a day for all those years. Mulligan also led the other public handicappers in Los Angeles at every meet in SoCal at one time or another during his tenure there. He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

David’s Video Details Valentine’s Day ««« A group of friends prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day but not everything goes as planned for many of them. The pressures and expectations of the holiday create familiar situations for couples and singles. This ensemble romantic comedy boasts an all-star cast an acclaimed director and an engaging script.

The Road « A man and his son travel through a post-apocalyptic world trying to avoid roaming bands of cannibals while searching for food and shelter. Their trip is long, boring and often annoying. This may be the worst post-apocalyptical movie I have seen. The acting is good but nothing else is, put it on if you need a nap.

Invictus ««« Knowing that he needed to unite a divided country newly elected President Nelson Mandella turned to rugby. South Africa would be hosting the World Cup of rugby with an automatic bid. The national team was a seen by many as a symbol of apartheid but he resisted efforts to change their name, colors and logo in his effort to bring unity to his beleaguered country. The performances are very good and it is inspirational but the rugby scenes drag it down. The move to change the entertainment venue’s name is meant to help unite all three of the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise’s facilities; it will also help guests readily identify them as being part of the same enterprise. Jokes of the Month

Howard, An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who shared his office with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients, and as he approached the receptionist’s desk, he noticed that she was a large unfriendly woman who was on a personal call and belittling whoever was on the other end of the line and ended the conversation with “Fine, I just don’t want to see your ugly face at my door ever again” and slammed down the phone. Howard stepped up to her desk and apprehensively gave her his name. In a very loud voice, the receptionist said, “Yes I see your name, you want to see the doctor about impotence, Right”? All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at one very embarrassed man. But, Howard recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, “No, I’m here to inquire about a sex change, but I don’t want the doc that did yours”! The room erupted in applause! Moral of the story: DON’T MESS WITH OLD FOLKS.

A REALLY BAD DAY

John is sitting on a barstool in a smelly biker bar in a seedy part of town…staring at his drink for 15 minutes when a mean and nasty trouble-making biker steps up to the bar next to him, grabs John’s drink….gulps it down in one swig and then turns to Bob with a menacing stare and says, “You wanna do something about it little man”? Poor John breaks down and starts bawling like a baby. “Come on man I was just screwin’ with ya” the biker says. ‘I can’t stand to see a man cry, so shut up, what’s your problem”? “This is the worst day of my life” John says between sobs. “‘I can’t do anything right”. “This morning, I overslept and was late to a meeting, so my boss fired me – When I got to the parking lot, with all my stuff in a box, I noticed my car was stolen and I have no insurance – Then, I left my wallet in the cab that took me home –And when I walked in the door, I found my wife and a golf buddy kissing on the couch….so I grabbed a driver from my golf bag and was about to club him…when my Bull Terrier bit me”. So, I came to this bar trying to work up the courage to put an end to my life - Then you show up and drink the damn poison!
