gaming news THE BLUEWATER DESERT CHALLENGE Thursday, Oct. 14-Sunday, Oct. 17, BlueWater Resort & Casino in Parker presents the best in offroad desert racing and is also the official host and race headquarters for the Inaugural BlueWater Desert Challenge. This new 2-day off-road desert race, to be held on Saturday and Sunday, was created by Casey Folks of “Best in the Desert Racing Association.” Fourteen states will be represented by 138-and-still-counting drivers and crew, who have signed up for the newest off-road challenge in “The American Off-Road Racing Series.” The race course will consist of 3 laps for most classes (2 laps for special classes), with each lap consisting of a 22 to 28 mile loop. Sixteen classes of racers are vying in this two-day event; classes such as the Trick Truck, ProTruck, Trophylite and the largest class -- the 1500 Series. Past overall winners of the BlueWater Resort & Casino Parker “425” who are already registered include 2004 & 2005 Overall winner Chuck Hovey – Class 1500, 2008 Overall winner Chet Huffman & Jerry Whelchel – Trick Truck and 2010 OveraAll Winner BJ Baldwin, Trick-Truck. Baldwin was also the first recipient of a new trophy, the Manny Esquerra Valor Award. Created in his honor, the Manny Esquerra Valor Award goes to the overall winner of the BlueWater Resort & Casino Parker 425. Esquerra was a true legend in off-road racing, and died while racing the 2008 BlueWater Resort & Casino Parker 425. Registration, Tech Inspection, Contingency and the Awards presentation will be held at the BlueWater Resort & Casino. A schedule of events is available at the hotel registration desk, or you can view it online at www.bitd.com.

Casey Folks has promised his racers a totally different race course from his featured point-to-point or long-loop races of the “The American Off-Road Racing Series.” The BlueWater Desert Challenge is new and challenging, and a completely redesigned race course that includes Casey’s concept of John Wayne’s Gorge, Marilyn’s Romp, The Matterhorn, The Sand Pile, Parker River Run, The New Thunder Alley and The Snake Pit - As Casey Folks has put it, “A racer’s dream, an off-road racer’s Disneyland.” Participants who have raced in any of BlueWater’s sponsored “Best in the Desert” racing events know that Parker is not only a tourist destination, but has the assessed value of a first-class racing event to enhance their experience. And with Bluewater Resort & Casino and the Colorado River as the backdrop, they can’t go wrong. BlueWater Resort and Casino offers something for everyone, and proudly sponsors the best in off-road racing with the “Best in the Desert” Parker 250, Parker 425, BlueWater Gran Prix and the newest in the offroad series, the BlueWater Desert Challenge. BlueWater Resort & Casino, along the shores of the Colorado River in Parker, is fast becoming the entertainment capital of western Arizona. An enterprise of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, BlueWater features 200 river and mountain-view rooms and suites, slots, table games, high-stakes bingo plus several restaurants, including River Willows, the Parker area’s most outstanding steakhouse. In addition, nationally-renowned celebrities appear regularly at the BlueWater amphitheater. And the resort has a 164slip marina. gaming news Tasty Event in Prescott A true culinary experience topped the charts this year as the Yavapai Prescott Indian Tribe along with Bucky’s and Yavapai Casinos hosted their 10th Annual Taste of Prescott held under the big tent at Frontier Village in Prescott on Saturday, September 25. Attendees from all over Arizona mixed and mingled to live music by Pam and Dave Swanstrom and enjoyed samplings from some of the Prescott and quad-city area’s best restaurants. This event was not for the faint at heart! Vendors pulled out all the stops and tempted attendees with tantalizing dishes like pulled pork sandwiches, lip-smacking brisket sliders, savory short ribs, multitudes of Mexican dishes, decadent desserts, and a plethora of pizza varieties – And these were only a small sample of the tantalizing tastes that kept everyone coming back for more.

FROM A WOMAN’S POINT OF VIEW

by Marianne Minneci

Ladies State Poker Champ is Crowned

he 2010 Ladies State Championship tournament is now history. The fifth annual tournament was played at Casino Arizona’s new Talking Stick Resort on September 11-13 and it was a whopping success! This event has grown in popularity each year. The 2010 State Championship field of 372 women represented a 50% increase over last year’s attendance. The original one day event was spread out over three days this year to allow for more players. Each day’s players were scaled down and the top players returned on Monday, Sept 13 to face off for a total prize pool of over $65,000. The positive feedback I received this year was overwhelming. What a great event - Best tournament ever…It’s great to play against such good players, it really helps my game. These are just some of the comments I received while talking to woman who participated in this event. As in prior year’s Casino Arizona’s professional poker staff made this another world class affair. This Ladies event had no similarity to women’s events I’ve witnessed in past years. Gone are the days of the timid female player unsure of her next move. The 372 woman who played in this year’s event demonstrated they are a force to be reckoned with. Their skill, tenacity and sheer desire to exceed played out during this tournament. The caliber of play was equal to any event on the pro circuit. Tournament director, Dave Smith told me that these women were by far some of the most aggressive female players he has ever witnessed to which he added, “It made the tournament very interesting to watch”. Play at the final table was fast and furious. At 4pm we had reached the final four. After a hard fought battle, 4th place went to Stevie Olivia, a poker dealer at Fort McDowell. Her disappointment was evident as she walked away from the final table. Remember Stevie, there is always next year. Lisa Fetter went out next and was happy to finish third. She was embarrassed to tell me that she has only played for 18 months. Lisa, you made a great showing for someone who has played for that short a time. 14 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2010

Heads up play between Simone Kankel and Candace Kauter was very exciting to watch. Candace Kauter was the chip leader and Simone just couldn’t pull any chips away from Candace. At one point the balance of power seemed to be shifting when Simone’s Ace of Clubs and 10 of Hearts prevailed over Candace’s pocket 10’s. A few hands later however, Simone called Candace’s all in bet with a jack, five of spades against Candace’s jack, seven of clubs. The board was no help to either player, but Candace’s 7 of clubs played and the game was over giving Candace the championship. Second place finisher, Simone Kankel is a financial advisor for Motorola in Schaumburg, Illinois. She was disappointed that she didn’t win, but said that Candace was a great opponent. Simone was a great player and made a great showing overall. This year’s champion Candace Kauter lives in Scottsdale and works in Sales and Marketing. She plays cash games and tournaments at Casino Arizona and in Vegas. Candace has been playing Hold-Em for about four years. She would love to become a professional poker player because she loves the game and said that winning this tournament may open the door for her to play professionally. Candace attributed her win to a positive attitude. She said that at times play in the tournament was very stressful because of all the good players she was up against. She said she couldn’t sleep on Sunday night because she was having nightmares about not winning the tournament

A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Betting on a Budget

by Linda Boyd

ecently I read a report indicating that people are being more careful in how they spend their hard-earned income. I mean do I really need another Coach bag or Tiffany bracelet? Probably not, and I’m personally being very conservative in how I spend my mad money. However, that doesn’t mean I’m going to remain glued to the television and become a hermit. We all have to let our hair down and kick up our heels from time-to-time. What’s the point of working hard if we’re too worried about the economy to get out and have some fun? For me and many others it means going to a local casino to unwind and try my luck at video poker. Of course you want to enjoy the ride home even if it wasn’t your day. You must practice restraint and stay within your pre-determined budget to avoid “player’s remorse” (like buyer’s remorse, but more painful) after your session ends.

Choosing Your Game:

I mostly play video poker because: I know the ER ahead of time and there is a component of skill involved. To be sure, all casino games have a short-term factor of luck and you can even be playing a positive game computer-perfect but lose. The best you can do is to consider your choices in accordance with your bankroll, that’s the money you brought with you, and show restraint.

Slots:

Today’s slots are more fun than ever before, mostly due to the sounds, graphics and especially the bonus rounds. The problem is that you’ll never know the ER (expected return) for the game by looking at the pay schedule or any other way for that matter. That’s not a problem if you stop playing when you’ve lost the amount you allocated for the game. The big problem for some is they may be annoyed by those waiting who seem to be praying that they lose so they can play. Also, you may think a jackpot won on “your machine” would have been yours had you stayed. Rest assured that isn’t the case since it depends on the exact instant when the play is triggered. Your results definitely wouldn’t be the same as the next player. 18 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2010

One other thing to consider is the cost of a single play rather than the denomination you have selected. For example, it may say “penny” machine, but if the maximum bet is $2.50 then it’s not a penny machine. If one objective is to play for a few hours on a limited budget then make sure you’re not penalized for having less than the maximum bet.

Video Poker:

Just like with slots pay attention to the pay schedule and determine the game’s ER before choosing your game of choice. For example, I’ve seen both 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6JOB) in the same casino as an 8/5 JOB or even 7/5 JOB. Of course you want the 9/6 JOB. If the best JOB game is 8/5, then look around for a progressive version. There are many in Arizona casinos but you will have to look for them. Just like with slots, consider the cost of playing a single game in conjunction with your available budget for that session and avoid multi-hand games; for example, if you’re on a limited budget and each game is going to cost say $6.25. Those quarter 5-play devices are found in most casinos. Instead you could opt for a single-line quarter game. Video poker players should realize that some games may be the same denomination and have the same per game cost, but be more expensive anyway. That’s due to the risk or game volatility. The best rule of thumb is to note the payout for frequent hands, like two pair. If you receive double your wager, like any JOB game, your bankroll will last longer. On the other hand, if you only receive a return of your bet, also called even money, for two pair, like Double Double Bonus (DDB) it’s likely to be more expensive. Plan B: Sometimes there’s a method to your madness and you have to last a specified amount of time. For example, you may have come for a drawing and know you will be there for four hours, the duration of the drawing. (As a tragic aside, I once left a drawing early and my name was drawn for $2,000 cash. As if this wasn’t bad enough,

everybody and his uncle had to inform me of this major gaffe next time I was there.) Sometimes you’re with a group and know ahead of time that the train isn’t leaving for three or four hours. In either case have a good book to read or bring your tennies for a jog. Both activities trump the “walk of shame” – of going to the ATM.

Summary:

As the adage goes, variety really is the spice of life, particularly when it comes to leisure-time play. I only go to feel-good movies and given today’s prices make sure it’s one I want to see. If I’m sitting on the fence I can always wait until the DVD comes out. On the other hand, when things are dull there’s nothing like a visit to the neighborhood casino to liven them up - Just make sure you don’t spend next month’s gambling budget in the process.

HORSIN’ AROUND

by Brian Mulligan

The C up I s C oming

eems hard to believe….but the Breeders’ Cup is just days away, and hopefully we can provide some names today that have a chance to steal the thunder at Churchill Downs. The action kicks off Friday, November 5 and continues through Saturday, and you can’t tell the players without knowing the race line-up, so let’s start with the obvious. The Friday races will be under the lights for the first time in history, with an initial BC post around 4pm. The BC World Championships consist of 14 Graded races, with purses and awards for the two days totaling $26 million. The Championships are non-invitational; any thoroughbred competing in the world that meets the eligibility requirements may pre-enter. Each race is limited to 14 starters, and if the race has more than 14 horses pre-enter, a fieldselection format is used to determine the starters. The pre-entry deadline for the 2010 Championships is Noon, Monday, Oct. 25. All horses that want to compete must be pre-entered by this date. This is followed by the entry deadline Tuesday, November 2, which closes promptly at 10am. Six BC races will be carded Friday. The BC Marathon at 1 and 3/4 miles on dirt has the softest purse, a mere $500,000, and will kick off the extravaganza. Milliondollar races on Friday will consist of the Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile and the Filly & Mare Sprint at 7 furlongs. There are three $2 million races Friday, the Juvenile Fillies at a mile-and-a-sixteenth, the Ladies Classic at 9

Zenyatta with Mike Smith riding wins the Vanity Handicap furlongs and the Filly & Mare Turf at 1 and 3/8 miles. That leaves 8 for Saturday, and the million-dollar races are the Juvenile Turf at a mile, the Dirt Mile and the Turf Sprint at 5 furlongs. Those that will compete for the $2 million pots Saturday will race in three events, the Juvenile at 8 1/2 furlongs, the Mile on grass and the Sprint at 6 furlongs. Grass marathoners shoot for the $3 million prize in the Turf at a mile-and-a-half and the granddaddy of them all, the Classic at a mile-and-a-quarter with a $5 million jackpot at the end of the rainbow. It’s never too early to prepare for this extravaganza, and as the cast will be in flux right up until post time, those connections that have a plan and a map for their horse are generally the barns that get rewarded with the money. When betting the Cup this year, be fully aware of the styles that have been successful at Churchill. In the Distaff and in the Classic, tactical speed has been preferred, and the trend has continued in the Mile, but if you are the best, like War Chant was in 2000, you can come from left field.

When betting the Cup this year, be fully aware of the styles that have been successful at Churchill.

THE PICK Date

I’ll Take Two! Spencer Cichon loves playing the Arizona Lottery Scratchers, especially “Extreme Cash” since he zwins something on that game about 40% of the time. Recently Spencer purchased two of those Scratchers tickets, he also asked the clerk to take them from different packs the store had open. He then took them home to scratch. As he began scratching the first ticket, he uncovered more and more zeros, and his hand began to shake. As it turned out, that ticket was worth $500,000. Spencer later found out that it was the last top prize for that game. After he told his wife, she had trouble sleeping – just thinking about the ticket being in the house made her uncomfortable. Spencer really likes purchasing Scratchers - he feels the odds are better than some games, giving him a greater chance to win. All of his friends in California have said they’re going to start playing Scratchers. Spencer is looking forward to paying off all of his bills and plans to retire soon. He said he feels great – And why shouldn’t he!

An Occasional Player Different types of lottery players win with Arizona Lottery Scratchers – some play on a regular basis, while others, like James Thomson, only play occasionally. In fact, he usually just plays $2 Scratchers, but sometimes purchases $5 tickets. However, when he went to pay for his purchase at the store, he happened to see Magnificent 7’s displayed at the counter. Since he hadn’t played it before, and it was a $5 ticket, he only purchased one, and waited until he got home to scratch it. Evidently, it was the right time for him to buy a ticket. After James scratched the ticket and saw the $50,000 prize, he checked the ticket about twenty times to make sure he wasn’t seeing things. Then he called his wife, who was at work, to tell her the good news. Of course, she didn’t believe him. When she came home, he had her check the ticket. At that point, they both realized they had a $50,000 winner – So he immediately signed the back of the ticket. (Note: An unsigned winning ticket is like a bearer bond; whoever signs it and has matching identification is considered the owner.) James and his wife sat down that evening and discussed how they were going to use their winnings. Their first priority was going to be to pay off bills and then save the rest. At that point, they hadn’t planned to tell anyone in their family. 22 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2010

Playing Perfect Basic Strategy

Before I get into the specifics of Playing Perfect Strategy, I would like correct something from my last column about the “Invite Only” Blackjack tournament at Wild Horse Pass Casino. I passed along some information about that tournament –scheduled for early November, but later found out - that tournament was never approved – so I apologize for giving out information that turned out to be incorrect. That tournament may be coming up later this year –I will make you this promise - once that tournament gets approved…I will I pass along that date to all my readers who look forward to participating in these special tournaments.

Perfect Basic Strategy: s most of you know, for each two card hand that you receive in the game of blackjack there is only one correct play depending on the dealers up card. There are a lot of so called experts out there claiming that their version of basic strategy is correct - so it is hard to determine which one is right. All of you know (at least I hope you know) always stand on the hand of 17 or better. Many authors claim that you should stand with the hand of 12-16 when the dealer has a 2-6 up. Well they are wrong. Most players I have seen, do play it that way - but for most casinos in Arizona - the correct play is to hit 12 against the dealers up card of 2 or 3. What makes me think that I’m right and they are wrong? It’s a thing called probability. Sure you may hit your 12, catch a 10 and bust, then watch the dealer also have 12 and catch an 8 for 20. People at the table will tell you that you took the dealers bust card and played your hand incorrectly, but they would be wrong. Here is the math; Say you’re betting $10 with the rules above, with a 12 versus a dealer up card of 2, and play that hand 1000 times - you would be a

24 ARIZONA PLAYER October 2010

loser no matter how you played the hand. 1000 hands x $10 per hand for a total of $10,000 - You would lose $2,900 by standing every time and lose $2,520 if you hit every time. It’s the lesser of two evils - the correct play is to hit. From the numbers above the long run expectation for your 12 playing against the dealers up card of 2 is -29% if you stand, and -25.2% if you hit. In either case it’s a losing proposition, but you will lose less by hitting - it’s as simple as that. For anyone that wants to win at blackjack the first step is to learn correct basic strategy according to mathematical expectation, not some Authors feeling on what is the correct play. If you would like to learn to play a winning game of blackjack my book “Beating The Casino at Their Own game is available for $22.95 at POB 54275, Phoenix, Arizona, 85078. T.J. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Never Let Me Go ««««« Ruth, Kathy and Tommy spend their childhood at a charming seemingly perfect English boarding school. As they get older they have to deal with how they feel for each other and when Ruth and Tommy pair up by Kathy feels left out. While their schooling has been David Ramsey very good it has not prepared them for the outside world, the predetermined reality that awaits them nor the moral dilemma it represents. The acting is superb and the writing is brilliant. Everything about this film is perfect you will remember it for a long time. This is the best film of the year, so far.

David’s Video Details Beauty and the Beast ««««« The Disney classic is available for the first time on Blu-ray. The classic fairy tale comes to life with amazing characters, superb music and wonderful songs. The characters are well crafted and perfectly acted. The story has suspense, laughs, thrills and romance. It is perfect for the entire family and one to watch as a family. It is the only animated movie ever nominated for the Best Picture Oscar and it is the best animated film of all time.

The Karate Kid ««««

When 12-year-old Dre moves with his mother from Detroit to China he has a hard time adjusting. He quickly runs afoul of a local bully who beats him up using kung fu. He talks a kung fu master into teaching him and enters a tournament. This remake is faithful to the original. The action is engrossing, the scenery is beautiful and the acting is very good with Jackie Chan giving his best performance. You will be on the edge of your seat and cheering at the end.

The Social Network «««« In his Harvard dorm room a sophomore created a program that will make him the world’s youngest billionaire. He is arrogant and alienates his friends and partners as he falls under the influence of money and fame. The story is told from the depositions taken for the lawsuits that further complicate his life. While it is based on a true story it may not be factual it is very good. The acting is very good and the writing gives you an insight into the players.

How to Train Your Dragon ««« A Viking village has a unique pest problem – Dragons. Hiccup is the weakling of the village who discovers something new about the dragons when he befriends a wounded one. There is lots of action and some humor to go with a good story and strong character development. It is one of the better family films this year. It has been possible to steal the mileand-a-half Turf on the front end, like Great Communicator did at 12-1, but racing luck is the most important element. Stalk-and-pounce types have been the order of the day with Sprint winners at Churchill, including the last time when Thor’s Echo sat a perfect 3-hole trip. The juvenile events have been won by basically lightly-raced runners who could be positioned fairly close to the early action, as evidenced by Street Sense in 2006, who had only 4 races before the Cup. The pinnacle race is the Classic, and we have a chance to see history made if Zenyatta can repeat, beat the boys again and win her 20th consecutive race. I took a stand against her last year, but she was awesome, and I surely learned a valuable lesson. The best thing for bettors about the Cup is that the information will be out there for all to see several days before the event itself. Get your popcorn out, buckle up, and let’s hope we all get lucky. Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for 17 years for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He has probably handicapped more races than any man alive since he set lines on up to 15 tracks a day for all those years. Mulligan also led the other public handicappers in Los Angeles at every meet in SoCal at one time or another during his tenure there. He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form writing “A Closer Look” analysis daily.

Joke of the Month The Decent Descent

Thanks to Barbara Walters for this Joke that she told on the TV show “The View”

A pilot, still in his uniform was catching a ride home from New York to Phoenix for a few days off was seated next to a young woman and her infant. As the flight attendant announced they were beginning their descent into Phoenix, the young mother pulled up her blouse and began breast feeding the newborn. The pilot turned away to allow her some privacy.

As the plane landed, she stopped feeding the baby and adjusted her blouse. She then looked over to the pilot and said “I hope I didn’t embarrass you, but my Pediatrician suggested I breast feed the baby when the plane is making its descent to relieve the pressure in his ears”. The pilot then shook his head side to side, smiled and replied “and all these years…I’ve just been chewing gum”
