CHAPTER TWO BY

NEIL SIMON MARSHA MASON

DIRECTED BY

LOVE ALWAYS DESERVES ANOTHER CHAPTER. Neil Simon is widely regarded as one of the most successful and performed playwrights in the world. Chapter Two is his semi-autobiographical comedy about a recently widowed writer George Schneider who is introduced by his press agent brother to soap opera actress Jennie Malone. Both are trying to come to terms with starting from scratch, and through their friends – who are determined to see the two happy again – the pair meet and begin a whirlwind romance. The play was written as a tribute to Marsha Mason, Mr. Simon’s second wife, who was also nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe Award for playing the lead role in the film. Ms. Mason, who wowed us last season with her direction of An Act of God, will be with us at ATC to direct this comedy filled with truth and wisdom. “A COMEDY WITH PLENTY OF LAUGHS AND MORE PROFUNDITY THAN YOU MIGHT ANTICIPATE.” – Chicago Tribune “SNAPPY, FUNNY AND ARTISTICALLY HONEST…WILL HAVE YOU SIMULTANEOUSLY LAUGHING AND CRYING.” – New York Times

THE RIVER BRIDE BY

MARISELA TREVIÑO ORTA KINAN VALDEZ

DIRECTED BY

2013 WINNER OF ATC’S NATIONAL LATINO PLAYWRITING AWARD

A SECRET THE RIVER WON’T GIVE UP. Once upon a time, in a fishing village along the Amazon, there lived two sisters struggling to find their happilyever-after. Helena is dreading her sister Belmira’s wedding. T he groom, Duarte, should have been hers! And she knows that her sister only wants to escape their sleepy Brazilian town for an exciting new life in the city. But three days before the wedding, fishermen pull a mysterious stranger out of the river – a man with no past who offers both sisters an alluring, possibly dangerous future. Brazilian folklore and lyric storytelling blend into a heartrending tale of true love, regret, transformation, and the struggle to stay true to your family while staying true to yourself. “A MESMERIZING, MAGICAL TALE OF HEARTBREAKING ROMANCE. A SHINING EXAMPLE OF WHAT LIVE THEATRE IS ALL ABOUT: SUPERB STORYTELLING; MARVELOUS ACTORS; AND TECHNICAL EXPERTISE THAT TRANSCENDS INTO SEAMLESS, STUNNING REALITY RIGHT BEFORE THE AUDIENCE’S EYES.”

MAN OF LA MANCHA

Tucson

A NEW DREAM FOR A NEW ERA. Following the record-breaking success of ATC’s Fiddler on the Roof, we bring you a thrilling new production of the brilliant Tony Award®-winning favorite about dreaming the impossible dream. Our quest is to bring you a Man of La Mancha that fully realizes the triumphant story and the score of beloved songs including the iconic “Impossible Dream,” while pulsating with the vibrant culture of Spain. This exciting new staging takes inspiration from the spontaneous, raw theatricality of flamenco performance – focusing on the passion and virtuosity of the performers/ musicians as they tell the intertwined stories of Don Quixote and his imprisoned creator, Miguel de Cervantes. This thrilling new staging will amplify the lasting power and potent emotions of this beloved musical.

OUTSIDE MULLINGAR BY

JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY DAVID IVERS

DIRECTED BY

TONY NOMINEE FOR BEST PLAY

FROM THE AUTHOR OF DOUBT AND MOONSTRUCK comes this charmer of a romantic comedy set in the farmlands of Ireland. Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony is painfully shy and has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland. Rosemary lives right next door and is determined to have him – at all costs! She has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But these yearning, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Poetic, uplifting, dark, and funny, Outside Mullingar is a compassionate work about how sometimes the very things we’re looking for happen to be right in front of us the whole time. “BOTH FUNNY AND POIGNANT. JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY HAS NOT WRITTEN A MORE BEAUTIFUL OR LOVING PLAY THAN OUTSIDE MULLINGAR.” – Variety

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK FRANCES GOODRICH ALBERT HACKETT ADAPTATION BY WENDY KESSELMAN DIRECTED BY DAVID IRA GOLDSTEIN CO-PRODUCED WITH GEVA THEATRE CENTER, ROCHESTER, NY DRAMATIZED BY AND

FINDING HOPE IN THE DARKEST CORNERS. One of the most powerful stories of the 20 th Century, The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic in war-torn Amsterdam. Anne’s daily e xistence – her fears, her hopes, her laughter, her grief, and her family’s desperate attempt to preserve humanity in an inhumane world – drive this transcendently powerful true-life tale. Incorporating newly discovered writings from the diary of Anne Frank – as well as survivor accounts – to create an impassioned story of the lives of Jews persecuted under Nazi rule, it is a story that continually lingers in our minds throughout the generations because of its optimism and intrinsic truth: the idea that no matter how dire the circumstances, faith in the good of people is what keeps the world in balance – even when all seems lost. “IT SHATTERS THE HEART. NEVER LETS US FORGET THE INHUMAN DARKNESS WAITING TO CLAIM ITS INCANDESCENTLY HUMAN HEROINE.” – New York Times PRODUCTION SPONSOR

Students of today are the artists of tomorrow. ATC’s Learning & Education programs inspire creativity in schools and across the state in a number of ways.

A R I Z O N A T H E AT R E C O M PA N Y I N T H E C O M M U N I T Y Learning and education aren’t just about kids. People of all ages and backgrounds participate in our exciting programs. ATC delivers inspiring experiences in a number of ways, both connected to our stage and beyond our walls, in schools and across the state. These programs are supported in part by your generous donations. Some of our programs include: PROLOGUES

PLAY GUIDES

Arrive early and enjoy engaging pre-show insight, context, and behind-the-scenes ‘secrets’. This popular program takes place in the theatre 30 minutes before most performances and finishes 15 minutes before curtain time. Included with your ticket purchase – visit the show schedules for more information.

Comprehensive Play Guides are created for each of our plays and are available free on ATC’s website as a resource for all patrons. Each guide covers topics relating to the play, contextual information about the period in which the play is set, and the process the play went through to reach production. Included with your ticket purchase.

POST-SHOW DISCUSSIONS

STUDENT MATINÉE SERIES

Go right to the source! This is your chance to ask questions! An ATC staff member leads post-show discussions with actors, guest artists, and audience members. Offered after select main stage performances with your ticket purchase – visit the show schedules for more information.

(For elementary, high school and college groups.) Student Matinées allow ATC to share the live theatre experience at low or no cost to young people throughout Arizona. If you child’s school is interested in joining a matinée, please call 520-884-8210 x7513 for more information.

DAVID IRA GOLDSTEIN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM If you can’t come to us, we’ll come to you. Our Learning & Education staff and teaching artists travel all over the state to bring the professional live theatre experience to Arizona communities near and far during week-long residencies tailored to suit your needs.
