PREFACE In the beginning, I found myself enthusiastic for my thesis topic but as time passed I was a bit worried as it demanded a lot of aspects to be dealt with, but as I sieved and crystallized it and made the picture transparent, it appeared more and more interesting to me. It was rather difďŹ cult to choose the right type of elements and ethos to full. The inevitable needs and to achieve a desirable expression of technological advancement combined with the social and cultural environment of the country, so and integrated approach towards the whole of it, was the goal I aimed for. Topic Science City Navi Mumbai (S.C.N.M) - 19.1101° N, 73.0625° E Science city is a system facility that is made in order to explain and present science and technology to the people in a way that it could be easily understood and provide fun. India have a tradition of exhibiting the advancement of science and technology in its own way. Even we have its proof in our history such as places like Jantar Mantar etc and they still amaze us in the 21st century because science do not have age its always young because just like time it's a truth always. Its aim is to reflect the Scientific and technological advancement of human so far and motivate the upcoming bright future through an architectural milestone in this urban strata.
Site for proposal -
History Jantar Mantar Delhi The Jantar Mantar is located in the modern city of New Delhi. It consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments. The site is one of five built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur, from 1724 onwards, as he was given by Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah the task of revising the calendar and astronomical tables. There is a plaque fixed on one of the structures in the Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi that was placed there in 1910 mistakenly dating the construction of the complex to the year 1710. Later research, though, suggests 1724 as the actual year of construction. The primary purpose of the observatory was to compile astronomical tables, and to predict the times and movements of the sun, moon and planets. Some of these purposes nowadays would be classified as astronomy. Completed in 1724, the Delhi Jantar Mantar had decayed considerably by 1867. Much like the Great Sphinx of Egypt, however, it was not too late to return the calculating instruments of Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to their former glory.
Jantar Mantar Jaipur The Jantar Mantar is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments, built by Sawai Jai Singh who was a Rajput king served Emperor Aurangzeb and later Mughals. The title of (King) and Sawai was bestowed on him by Emperor Mohammad Shah. Jai Singh II of Amber built his new capital of Jaipur between 1727 and 1734. It is also located in Ujjain and Mathura. It is modeled after the one that he had built at the Mughal capital of Delhi. He had constructed a total of five such facilities at different locations, including the ones at Delhi and Jaipur. The Jaipur observatory is the largest and best preserved of these. It has been inscribed on the World Heritage List as "an expression of the astronomical skills and cosmological concepts of the court of a scholarly prince at the end of the Mughal period". Early restoration work was undertaken under the supervision of Major Arthur Garrett, a keen amateur astronomer, during his appointment as Assistant State Engineer for the Jaipur District.[2] The jantar mantar was made by sawai jai singh as he was particularly interested in learning about the sky above his head.
Science City Initiated to instill scientiďŹ c values in children as well as adults according to India's National Science Policy, The 'Science City' project is CIDCO's honest attempt towards providing the young generation a scientiďŹ c point of view to their beliefs.To gain an insight into what children want in a science park, CIDCO organised an essay contest titled 'The science park of my dreams'. The ideas penned by children in their essays will be put to use in shaping up this unique project in Navi Mumbai. 1. Former President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam is the guiding authority for the project. 2. Spread over an area of 18.55 hectares within walking distance from Kharghar Railway Station. 3. PURPOSE OF SELECTING THE TOPIC I have selected this topic to prove myself competent enough for this kind of project which is of National & International Importance. Site Analysis Climatic Conditions. The Climate of Mumbai is a tropical wet and dry climate. Mumbai's climate can be best described as moderately hot with high level of humidity. Its coastal nature and tropical location ensures temperatures won't fluctuate much throughout the year, the mean average of 27.2 °C and average precipitation of 242.2 cm (95.35 inches). The mean maximum average temperatures in about 32 °C (90 °F) in summer and 30 °C (86 °F) in winter, while the average minimums are 25 °C (77 °F) in summer and 20.5 °C (68.9 °F) in winter.
Soil Condition in the site There is normal brown soil and no presence of black cotton soil as well as it have rock bed beneath.
Topography Presence of large Khaghar hills of about 90m heigh with 2 water streams and three large ponds with plenty of vegetations.
Surrounding With Bharti Vidya Peath University and NIFT campus near by it have many residential, institutional and industrial area near by. It also consist of an express highway at the front and the navi Mumbai metro is also under construction nearby.

Science City Kolkata Owner - National Council of Science Museum. Architect - Late Ar Aftabuddin Ahmed Structural consultants Development Consultants Year of completion - 1991 Total land area - 49.7 acres or 201136.sqm Total buildup area - 45000 sqm Science City, Kolkata is the largest science centre in the Indian subcontinent under National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and J B S Haldane avenue, Kolkata. It is considered by some people as the most distinguished landmark in post-independence Kolkata. Saroj Ghose, the ďŹ rst director general of NCSM, who is credited with having conceptualized this centre in 1997. This centre was inaugurated by two parts: the 'Convention Centre Complex' was unveiled on 21 December 1996 by Paul Jozef Crutzen in presence of the then chief minister Jyoti Basu and the whole centre was opened by the then prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral on 1 July 1997. On 10 January 2010, prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the second phase of Science City in presence of the then chief minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee

It is the zonal headquarters of ďŹ ve Science Centers in Nagpur, Calicut, Bhopal, Dharmapur and Goa. It is visited by about 6,00,000 people every year who experience and enjoy the basic principles of Science and Technology. Its natural and free environment provides a perfect picnic destination to the students to learn, familiarize and to have a glimpse of innovations in science education.

The Design The design has all the attributes of modernism, appropriate to the technological character of the building. Befitting a science museum the design is more functional than cultural – an unpredictable and changing mix of architectural forms and facades presenting an utterly unexpected form for museum building. Modular Design – Its design is basically modular but the repetition of module is not predictable. The form further develops into a multi directional module with central service cores structural shafts. The entire requirements are resolved in four major modular units. The circulation broadly falls under two basic needs – the movement of people and of the exhibits. - Indian architect and builder,
. The Science centre building has four blocks, Block A, Block B, Block C and Block D. . Block A and Block B , Block C and Block D are identical in shape and size with different functions . The shape of the building facilitates the placement of exhibits.
Individual block The staircase is placed in the centre of the Blocks. There are 2 passenger elevators and one freight elevator. The blocks are linked by bridges. The Structural column is 1.5 x 1.5 m and hollow from inside that carry all the concealed wiring

Morrison Planetarium Morrison Planetarium has 290 seats and at 78foot seamless video projection screen.Mimicking the 30 degree tilt of our planet, the planetarium, has a more powerful audio system than any comparable venue and is the largest all-digital installation of its kind.
Water Planet Water Planet acts as a multimedia centerpiece for the Academy’s aquarium. It comprises several dozen tanks filled with fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates from around the world, underlining the diversity of our planet’s marine life.
Concept and Design time + nature = change = metamorphoses = life = science Time is a dimension in which events can be ordered from the past through the present into the future, and also the measure of durations of events and the intervals between them. Nature, in the broadest sense, is equivalent to the natural, physical, or material world or universe. Our science city is following this philosophy as the design back bone. Let this institution be a mile stone in the circle of life and time. With time we were observing the world, while living in this nature, which have changed us to this extent that today we adapt this aura of nature among us in order to live our life and conserve what we have, that is nature it self the only thing which is keeping us alive in this universe.
Concept and Design In nature we can ďŹ nd the existence of cantilever in every life form such as clift of a mountain branches of a tree, shape of a bird, our hand from our body is even at the time of giving Agrh to sun we are at a cantilever position in our tradition. The cantilever branches give us shade in crouching sunny day as well as due to evaporation we feel comfortable to sit under a tree during sunny days. We have proved our self and our technology engineering in this ďŹ eld as well. we have created machines that are extremely cantilever such as stacker reclaimer in coal feilds. We have made Howra bridge at Kolkata which is an example of a largest cantilever structure in the world. Our approach towards designing the Science City Navi Mumbai is to set an example in a metropolitan city of new bread of architecture, construction and thought. The design will be such that there will be existence of nature at every point. We will cultivate it and nourish earth in the center of metropolitan super city. The level will be in such a scale that it will leave mammoth impact on the mind of the visitor, every citizen of Mumbai and India. In this opportunity of making a Science City we have a chance to create a modern era Monument that will represent people, their will, to over come all challenges and the prosperity of The Indian Sub Continent.
DESIGN & MODEL Our Science City Consist of :1. Three number of stem Pods that will act as large activity, exhibition and functional area. The PODs are suppose to provide shed to the pedestrian, area for exhibition, space for activities and inspiration to people. The three PODs are interconected so theat the visitor can visit each of them within the building itself. a. Space exploration hall ( POD 1 ) b. Earth exploration and evolution c. Dynamotion and Cyber lab.
DESIGN & MODEL . The building is at 25 M above the Ground and the distance between each with be a potential sitting and gathering area. . The foundation is inspired from anchor which help supporting the structure, by this design the mountain will act as a counter weight . The structure will provide huge shaded area and vegetation will cool up the place hence people can sit at the time of summer. . The structure have a property to welcome wind as the wind direction is towards north east as well. . The structure is designed in order to capture maximum wind Total builtup area 1st floor - 5204 sqm 2nd floor - 2457.36 sqm 3rd floor - 2471.71 sqm 4th floor - 2471.71 sqm 5th floor - 4639.8 sqm Total - 17244.58 sqm of one unit +1+1 = 51733.74 sqm
. The building have a large 10 m radius atrium which will help create stack effect. The backside of the structure also have many punctures. . The structure do enjoy any air condition as it is excepted Visual dome as it is expected that the facility to enjoy natural pleasant ventilation and air.

Kinetic skin of the Exhibition pod .The kinetic photovoltic skin reacts to temperature end help control the climate inside the facility. whenever the temperature exceed 35 degree the skin close down with help of mechanical rods on its sides. .The skin is trance lucent in nature. .The skin will be reinforced by ďŹ ber wires in honey comb shape which will light up at night with the help of led cove lights on its sides.
DESIGN & MODEL
Visual dome This dome is meant to address and entertain the pubic about different topics the building is all about such as space, physics, chemistry and other branch of science. This is a very versatile dome where many shows can be shown, the dome consist of projector screens and projectors attached behind the screen on the exo skeleton projecting on the skin. inside the dome there will be no light except the light projecting by the projects, inside there will be pitch black environment and public will be guided with the help of led pointers. The floor will be made of digital screens with thick glass layers. This screen floor can create the counter image of the image projected on the screen. By this way we can create any atmosphere and environment that will look real and the audience will feel that they are flying in the space, there is no sitting arrangement inside the dome.
Exoskeleton An exo skeleton structure will be an attractive part of the exhibition pod This exo skeleton will encorage mordern construction techniques. The visual dome is placed at the center of the pod and can be view from every floor.
False is made of thick glass covered led digital screen that will help create the complete environment. this will create a feel that the visitor is flying in space.
Temperature effect The dome is equipt with surround sound and air condishning system which work according to the programed video.

Planetarium
Planetarium design and Orientation is made in order to represent the height and level of education and knowledge. The position of planetarium in the site is at the highest point. Planetarium have its own car and bus parking. The design is massive and is a muse of modern & traditional Indian Architecture. This elements give the structure an Indian essence.
Plan of the planetarium It have a its ďŹ rst one of its kind I.S.R.O museum, dedicated to the unmatched achivements of I.S.R.O. and to encouraged efforts for further exploration of science. Area - 5917.11 sq m
Aqua Marine Center The aqua marine center will be one of the prime attraction of the science city. the A.m.c will contain four large size water tank, containing different type Aquatic ora fauna. The entrance tunnel will act as the exhibition area and marine museum. Aquatic center will showcase exotic sea creatures and history of human marine explorations.

The auditorium The entire site is providing two view ports and other different characteristic. The auditorium is placed at a position where we can get a different view of the institution. By these we can take the circulation to very end of the site and nicely utilize it. The auditorium is placed at this point of the site in order to take the circulation to this point and give the audience a different view of the science city. This place is suppose too be a cool calm area. This place is meant and designed to be a beautiful gathering place and prove to be a youngsters gathering point, peaceful place for elders and a beautiful lovers lane and walkout. This place provide a nice time in the super city of Navi Mumbai. Area surrounded will also have farm land. Auditorium consist of :. 400 sitting . interpretation room . toilets area - 1800 sqm
