We have to admit, we're all feeling a little jaded after such a cold, grey winter but, as I'm writing this, the sun is shining down, the temperature is around 11 degrees, the birds are singing and I'm feeling the warmth seeping into my bones. The world is changing around us and we can now slip into cruise control and head towards Sunnyville! And on that note, we've aimed this next edition at relaxed and exciting things to do and see – events, colossal sculptures, we're landscaping your garden, we’ve got amazing local chefs showcasing their skills, and a property section to blow your mind, hopefully helping you move to our wonderful area if you're just passing through. Dansel Gallery Contemporary Interiors In Wood Dansel was started by Danielle and Selwyn Holmes, from their home near Bridport, in 1976 where they began by making one-off pieces of furniture to commission. They later expanded, moving to their current premises in Abbotsbury in 1979 where, with the luxury of a selling space, they were able to develop a range of smaller accessories to complement the furniture. The workshop has now moved back to Bridport, allowing the gallery to occupy an extensive floor area. It sells work by many different craftsmen and women, as well as their own, all to a standard as high as any contemporary woodwork made in this country today. One-off bowls, boxes and cabinets are featured, as well as a range of kitchen, desk and domestic ware. Commissions can be taken for pieces of furniture designed by Dansel, as well as other craftsmen. There is a toy section including handmade wooden toys and automata and even an area devoted to books about trees, woodworking and design. The section of offcuts is popular with amateur woodworkers looking for smaller pieces of timber in a variety of different woods. The gallery is housed in a carefully restored thatched stable block which is around 300 years old and uses old wooden stable doors to close over internal plate glass windows. Its exterior looks small but the interior space has five rooms, including a small coffee shop and childrens play area. When entering the gallery you are greeted by friendly staff, the atmosphere is calming, and there is a wonderful aroma from the many different woods. There is a large car park and it is easy to find - near the centre of Abbotsbury village, on the main Bridport to Weymouth Jurassic Coast road (B3157). Dansel Gallery is well worth a visit due to the unusual nature and quality of the woodwork on display, as well as being in an interesting location in the picturesque Abbotsbury village. It is a good example of contemporary design blending comfortably with ancient surroundings.

A little slice of heaven. We explore the world of artisan landscaping and discover Blue Tulips, a local landscaping business. Join us as we follow them, working through a large project – here is the creativity in full flow! BlueTulips.co.uk is a garden design and landscaping business based in Dorset. They have been established for 13 years and have completed projects ranging from basic makeovers to grand designs in many styles, from traditional to contemporary. In the pictures, you’ll see that a grass slope has been transformed into a clean look family garden, enhancing the lifestyle of the owners and adding value to the property. With the design stage completed, levels and lines were placed on the original garden and the digging began. The garden angles to the right so the eye has been taken to the left to balance out the site aesthetically, so it appears straight. The level changes have been worked out for access and usable areas and the garden is very low maintenance, with membrane and wood chip planting areas.
The level changes have been achieved using sleeper steps, and the new flat grass areas are stabilised by oak slat curves. A sandstone terrace area adjoins the kitchen dining section and, with full-width steps, you are invited out into the whole space rather than being directed to a particular area. The lower section is also low maintenance with membrane and aggregate. Oak boards were used by the dining area door, in keeping with the extension and, finally, grass was added to the flat areas. In stage two of this project a full-width deck is added to the top section, providing a seating area and summerhouse, making the most of the views.

Having followed this young lady’s work for a fair while, and actually having Aoife Tierney run us some caricatures into the front of the mag, I have been dying for her to finish some pieces so we can show you guys just what a talent we have in our midst. In her own words... "I have been living in this part of the world for 16 months now. People would ask me ‘Why Dorset?’ and I always replied: ‘It’s cheaper than London.’ After just graduating from Limerick School of Art and Design, early in 2013, I was straight into a lousy bar job for the summer, and I was desperate to get away from home – to explore and see what adventures were out there... My sister, who lives here in Dorset, suggested taking a job in the pub (just a few doors down from where her and her family lived), then spending some quality time in the 'sticks' to work on my art. In Tuam, County Galway – also, I guess, in the west of Ireland – it’s very rare to see young guys in tweed, out for a day of shooting pheasants, so all this country flair was completely new to me. As a ‘foreigner' with fresh eyes, I was amazed at the wildlife and countryside, and the endless amount of footpaths that lead off through the beautiful woods and fields. I found both the crazy locals and the scenery inspirational, and this is reflected in some of my work. I’ve met some amazing, generous people who have become wonderful friends and have helped me to get to where I am now! When it comes to my work, I like to try new things. My work often jumps from one theme to another – from cartoons and illustrations, to abstract work, to detailed portraits. The same goes for the materials I use. I work with oil, acrylic, spray paint, watercolour, ink, pencil, and occasionally the odd tattoo machine, or whatever else I can get my hands on! Even though my subject matter tends to change constantly, the objective is the same. To recreate an image that reflects strength, light, expression and perspective. I adapt these to any work, whether it be capturing the expression on an intoxicated subject’s face or creating strange landscapes and creatures. Even though I am a scatter brain, I can be very observant, taking in a lot from my surroundings and adapting it into my work. I try to bring a note pad or sketch book and some markers with me in the car wherever I go. Sadly, the car has ended up with more drawings on it than the actual sketchbook! My work has come a long way since I moved here. I feel as a young artist I still have a long route ahead of me, but this place has had a massive impact on my career and boosted my confidence as an artist." 'Kaleidoprint' Kathryn Thomas 2015 ExhibitioN
‘Kaleidoscopic’, Kathryn Thomas’ 2014 ethereal exhibition of intensely coloured original oil paintings, proved to be a huge success for the naturalised Dorset artist. In addition to the technical development which the paintings contained, the work also attracted admiration from wider audiences drawn to the blending and depth of colour, formed by the combination of Michael Harding's pure artist’s oil paints and Kathryn's mark-making talents. With the exhibition then receiving significant exposure in the ITV1 series Harbour Lives, a new audience of some three million people were introduced to the name of Kathryn Thomas, and the orders, enquiries and comments of wonder and amazement began to flood in. So successful was the exposure, that Kathryn's website (www.kathryn-thomas.co.uk) experienced rather more hits than it could take and crashed, albeit for only half an hour or so. Of the emails, tweets and Facebook messages received, the highest volume, by some distance, were those enquiring as to the availability of prints. Kathryn's involvement in the limited edition print market was a brief toe-dipping, over ten years ago, from which she withdrew because of a feeling of loss of control of her imagery. With such apparent high demand for prints in the fallout from Harbour Lives, it seemed an opportunity too good to allow to disappear without further serious consideration.

Kathryn and business manager/husband, Andy, concluded that self-publication provided adequate retention of control over the imagery, quality and sales. Since July of last year, extensive research has been done regarding photographing, printing, mounting, glazing and framing, and the results will be revealed in ‘Kaleidoprint’, an exhibition of limited edition prints from the Kaleidoscopic range of paintings. Kathryn has been keen to ensure that local businesses were involved in the project as much as possible. Not only would this help in some small way to boost the Dorset economy but it would also mean that she and Andy would be able to build personal relationships with their suppliers – an essential aspect of the ethos which runs through the Kathryn Thomas business. To that end, she has been fortunate to be able to entrust the photography and printing to one of the foremost digital photography laboratories in the country – PW Digital. The eponymous Paul Williams has produced some astonishing work in his 30 years of digital photography, but he has risen to new levels of production in his ability to capture the depth and intensity in Kathryn's paintings. It was no easy task to select the correct paper on which to print. The gloss baryta with alumina paper is a wood-pulp based medium, rather than the more normal cotton-based paper and was chosen because of its unusually bright whiteness, thereby allowing the image to stand out to a more spectacular degree.
One of the trade-marks of Kathryn's paintings is the flow and variety of brush marks alongside the imperceptible blending from one colour to another. Paul's ability to capture this in his printing would count for nought if the glass in the framing was incapable of preventing reflection. Tru Vue© AR Reflection Free glass is of such high quality that it is almost unnoticeable. Master craftsman, Malcolm McHardy, of Big Picture Art in Moordown, produces the most beautiful frames for those who wish their print to be so displayed. Kathryn will offer only silk black or silk white plain laminated wood frames in order to detract as little as possible from the image. ‘Kaleidoprint’ will run from Saturday 4th to Saturday 18th April at the Studio, West Quay Road, Poole BH15 1HT. Open from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily, admission is free as is the ample parking.

When it comes to fine dining, if you ever find yourself thinking you’ve been there and done it, then think again. Since leaving a very busy and very well established restaurant in North Dorset with a legacy to last them years, things haven’t stopped for this bad boy of food. At Arkadia Towers he is known as ‘BBB’. He thinks we mean ‘Big Bad Brett’, but it actually means 'Beautiful Big Bear', and that’s what he is, a creative hairy creature, passionate in the kitchen. He’s also a culinary award-winning chef with a sense of humour as sharp as his best chef’s knife. If you do take a drive to North Dorset, you have to try the ‘Pig at the Post’ – piggy nibbles all lovingly created on a wooden board, and served with a local chilli and ginger cider – the stuff men dream of and women embrace! The menu is varied and has a real eye for seasonal flair. Whether it’s local venison with salt baked beetroot, beer, salsify, chocolate, fondant potato, or a prime cut of steak, down to the Risotto of Crown Prince Squash, Somerset truffles and sage crisps, all are served with a delightful honesty and a warm smile from wife Kelly and the incredible young team of passionate serving staff. Brett has taken all he has learnt from a vast amount of time foraging, demonstrating and having a yarn at the bar, and poured it all into his love of food. This my friends is a new level of satisfaction from an evening out! In the heart of the valley lay mystical men, making magical creations... How did the business start? I started Dorset Forge and Fabrication three and a half years ago. I had been working in the steel industry, both in structural steel and creative iron work for the past 35 years and decided to start my own business from scratch. Where did the two of you meet? I met Martin whilst I was working as Workshop Manager at another forge approximately six years ago and we quickly became good friends. What’s communication like between the two of you? Despite Martin struggling with the English language and my Slovakian being negligible, we get on very well as we are both perfectionists and share a good sense of humour which is a great asset during the working day. Where do the visions and ideas for the pieces come from? Most of Martin’s inspiration comes from the surrounding countryside as in his horse, hare and chicken sculptures. His dragon sculpture idea was born after working at Sherborne Castle. Other ideas are totally random thoughts put into form. arkadia magazine

Where did you both learn your craft? I attended Yeovil College and served a four year apprenticeship. I then worked at numerous steel fabrication companies and at a forge. I also taught at Yeovil College for a while before embarking on setting up my own company. Martin is a qualified coppersmith and won Coppersmith of the Year for three consecutive years. He attended art school where he learnt his craft and specialised in sculpture. What pieces are you working on at the moment? We have recently been working on the dragon and have also made boxing hares which seem to be very popular. We’ve been working on a vintage tractor that also serves as a post box and we’ve made a few unusual weather vanes too. Now a new horse is being undertaken. What’s for the future? The place was bustling with a mixed age group on the damp Thursday morning when we popped in, but the coffee was hot, the cake was to die for, and the freshly baked bread smelt like heaven. If you do fancy popping out on a fresh spring morning, make this the place to stop for lunch, or have a chilled brunch with the family. On a nicer day the children's area is a great distraction for the kids, and you can safely relax and while away an hour or two – the surrounding acre or so of land is a peaceful haven. I thoroughly enjoyed my wanderings around this beautiful place and will make a beeline for a Sunday roast very soon!

The sculptor, John Maine RA, is a stone carver with an international reputation for monumental and elegant works which are usually site specific. The Chiswell Earthworks is a stone landform which marries two important elements along the Chesil Beach, the turbulent and undulating seashore and the majestic stone quarries on Portland. This fusion exemplifies his subtle use of sculpture in the landscape. Liz and Andrew Murray have generously provided a long wall in their shop, Gallimaufry, to exhibit a programme of works by contemporary artists. John Maine’s drawings are exhibited here in February and March. There are 18 drawings, either sketches where he explores ideas for the commission he undertakes, or fully worked up drawings of sculpture he has already made, for example the two sinuous drawings based on the Chiswell Earthworks (5 and 6). Very striking is the bold conte drawing of the Arch Stones (17), a sculpture commissioned by the British High Commission in Canberra, Australia. Spring is here
and Sarah Talbot shares an insight, into what it takes for inspired garden design.... Spring, that most glorious of seasons! The perfect time to open your minds to something new and take a fresh look at the familiar. Gardens are often described as outside rooms and in many ways the same design principles apply, both inside and out. An interesting room will have divisions and partitions to create and define the different uses of the space; some areas will be active, others slower and more restful, so too your outdoor space. Our gardens are not always large and may begin life as unimaginative, straight-sided parcels of land enclosed by panel fencing. So, let your imagination wander; plants, pergolas, swathes of uncut grass, log walls and water – all offer possibilities that will delight not only you, but the wildlife in your garden too.
So how to create that energy and interest? This south-facing town garden originally boasted a large angular deck, a shed, plus a rectangle of
lawn with a narrow, straight border each side and – oh yes, fence panels!
The solutions? Reduce the area of deck, make it round with small, inset lights at the edge; add a self contained water feature and surround with scented, sun-loving plants. Connect the shady, side ‘corridor’ to the main garden with a splayed pergola hosting roses and clematis – posts must be chunky not skinny. Place a beautiful tree in a bold pot opposite the back door, design curved trellis to disguise the fence panels with random flagstones amongst the pebbles. The lawn – create perfect curves for movement and partially hidden views, plenty of easy maintenance plants; re-position the shed, add a paved work area and screen with thick bamboo poles. Use appropriate planting for privacy from neighbouring properties, install subtle lighting, then sit back and enjoy your beautiful garden!
