The Spa who loved me The mission was simple, infiltrate the M.O.D building and survey the area.
A
s we drive over to Portland, we’re agreed - you can’t help but feel the drama of the place. The contrast of the bleak landscape, set against a stunning blue sky and the endless views - it really makes you reflect on the wonders of the natural world. As our destination, the Ocean Hotel and Spa Retreat, comes into view, the drama is heightened and our conversation shifts from the natural to the man-made. The imposing building, once the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment, was built to test everything from huge naval guns to torpedoes, and is rumoured to have links to the very heart of the Portland spy ring, all very ‘007’ Built in 1949, from the local stone, this building looks nothing like its surroundings or its better-known Portland stone predecessors, such as Wren’s beautiful St Paul’s Cathedral. Instead, it looks like the backdrop from a Bond movie and I love it! Once inside, you discover the building’s latest secret - this huge blank canvas has been given a contemporary makeover that works perfectly. We receive a friendly Dorset welcome and start to understand why the hotel has recently been awarded 4-star status. The wonderfully efficient staff greets us and takes our booking details and provide us with all the information we need to find our way around. It’s a great start. My wife and I had booked a massage and facial and were left in the experienced hands of our therapists. My massage was incredible and included the use of hot drizzled oils, body brushing and the deepest massage movements using arms, fists, knuckles and thumbs. This left me feeling invigorated and like I’d had a really good workout! My wife enjoyed an Espa facial that melted her stresses away, with oils and creams that set to work as she drifted into the deepest of sleeps. Verna Herry, the hotel’s Director, is a therapist herself and takes a hands-on approach in this department. Originally from the Caribbean, Verna travelled far and wide
with world-class beauty group Steiner, before taking on high-profile spa management roles. Verna holds a master’s degree in spa therapies and insists on the highest possible standards, so if you are looking for targeted treatments with guaranteed outcomes, her team will live up to the highest of expectations. Later, we ate at the Cliff Restaurant - a totally unique experience. It is set in a glass cube that juts out from the building, resulting in the most unbelievable, panoramic views. The menu is fantastic, offering an à la carte selection for the more discerning palate, as well as a homely supper board, ideal for guests looking for a great homecooked meal. The board featured a range of tempting dishes, such as Local Fish Pie and a Thai inspired curry. As we really wanted to put the hotel to the test, we decided to opt for the à la carte option and I went for their specialty dish of Pan Seared Sirloin Steak with dauphinoise potatoes, curly kale and red wine sauce. My wife went for the Duck Breast with Cider Fondant, accompanied by green beans and purple-sprouting broccoli. Both dishes were impeccably cooked and tasted just perfect. Everything tasted fresh and I am told that the ingredients are sourced locally. They really make the most of the local area - the seas and hills that surround them - and the message from this creative team is clear: “Sustainable, fresh, local and seasonal!” I think that’s all we needed to hear! So, our impression of the Ocean Hotel and Spa Retreat? Well, the clue’s in the name - RETREAT. That’s exactly what it is; a retreat from the rest of the world. And the Ocean Hotel’s unique, surreal surroundings make that experience all the more powerful. Portland has a great deal to offer, if you feel the need to venture outside the building’s intriguing stone walls, but why do that when you can retreat completely to a world of glorious food, exquisite pampering and, above all else, relaxation? We could all do with the chance for a bit more of that! For more information, take a look at the hotel’s website at www.theoceanspa.co.uk
