St Kitts and its’ wonderful journey from dated to outstanding As 'Emma Costello' my world is ever changing. One of the remits of my varied and exciting role is to search for and acquire new ventures. My passion for property is long standing and passionate. My radar is always set to ‘seek’! When looking for a suitable project my criteria include:
• Potential yield • Malleability of the property • Location, location, location • And most importantly – the potential for fun!
arkadia magazine
My portfolio is far ranging and features starter flats, for those at the beginning of their journey, to challenging listed building conversions. I love to update and showcase the properties' personality and strengths. I source quality finishes with high spec appliances and add a sprinkling of flair - a slight twinkle in the stone work surface or modern feet on the bath, sleek lines with smoked glass balconies and chunky wood burners promising cosy living. I was immediately drawn to the stunning view that St Kitts benefits from. The Lazy river calmly meanders by, with swans gracefully passing and otters busily fishing. The changing seasons observed from the master bedrooms balcony, a true slice of Dorset.

This has kept me doing what I do, yes there are other mags, but as one of my fine friends said "They're just not maverick are they?" - I guess that kind of sums us up, we're not afraid to be ridiculed, we laugh in the face of commercialism, and we scoff at those that wish to proof read our magazine...go ahead you hardy fools. We're planning on doing this for sometime yet - roll on 2015 Summer, see you all at the festivals, get following us get set to enjoy our Summer madness!! See you by the cider tent for 'South Coast Summer fare'!

Looking at birds through a kaleidoscope, that’s how my husband describes my watercolours. I took it as a compliment, even though it wasn’t meant as one. He prefers my past work, tight, detailed and a bit more lifelike but I’ve loosened up and got a bit more daring these days. Working 24/7 and trading most weekends with Gekko Jewellery Design means painting has to be quite fast if anything is to get finished, it also has to fit into my tiny workshop, so when I was given a box of watercolours as a present I fell in love with them, they ticked all the 'boxes'! Even if the outcome isn’t always what I had in mind, the act of throwing paint into puddles of water is mesmerizing! I’m like a kid watching fireworks, those little 'sploshy star-bursts' get me every time! I can still fiddle with the details, I like to make the eyes and beaks a focal point but the fun lies in the feathers! I paint what I love, birds, animals, trees. Wildlife has always played a big role in my life and my work. I’m happiest in the woods with my dog and binoculars, a bit of a twitcher and secret tree hugger! After working as a graphic designer at 18, I set out as a freelance illustrator, not hugely successful, but a massive learning curve. I moved on to woodcarving, took on a few commissions here and there, but I was never going to make a living from that, way too time consuming! Then I fell into interiors, having been asked to decorate a new range of roll top baths with a marble effect, and so, still self-employed, I developed new techniques in decorative paint effects and specialised in faux marble finishes. Sadly the bottom dropped out of the market and circumstances have since forced me to take on a series of dull jobs, which is when I started Gekko jewellery. The creative spiral is moving on again and now the watercolours are sitting side by side with my jewellery design and I occasionally do murals and the odd pet portrait.

I’m now looking forward to another year at local events, fairs and festivals and I’m keen to see peoples' reaction to my work. I’ve had a few commissions but until I get out there and talk to people I won’t really know what’s popular. I suspect it’s the quirky ones like the ostrich and emu, they are impossible to paint sensibly, way too funky looking for that! I’m currently working on a collection of British birds but I’ve got plans for some more colourful friends too. I'm also painting hops, barley and all sorts of creatures in The Firkin Shed, a new micro pub in Bournemouth. Good excuse for a beer!

The Art of Newborn Photography Dorset-based entrepreneur Karen Wiltshire of KW Photography knows a thing or two about handling babies. She’s worked with hundreds of them in her work as a full time professional newborn photographer, typically when they are aged less than 14 days old. Since establishing her business in 2011, which she operates from her home-based studio in Poole, she has developed a reputation as the ‘baby whisperer’ thanks to her skill in soothing and posing even the most unsettled newborn baby during a photo shoot. Indeed, Karen has been putting Dorset on the map in the past year as her newborn photography has attracted the attention of people around the globe, and as the trend has really taken off. When her photographs were printed in the Daily Mail on two occasions last year, she was subsequently published in media in almost all continents of the world and swiftly became the newborn photographer on everyone’s lips; desired by parents and revered by other professional photographers. What she aims to achieve is the “sleeping baby” pose, which epitomises the ‘art of newborn photography’. It’s a look that first became popular in the USA by Anne Geddes in the 1990s and which has since become highly-prized in the UK. Karen explains the appeal for parents to Arkadia: “Try as some parents might, it is virtually impossible to create similar quality images at home. There truly is an art to newborn photography; in the posing of the child and the considered use of lighting and props. Only a professional can create this and the resulting pictures can be treasured forever – either as mementoes in the parents’ own homes or as gifts for family members.” But she warns, “It is not enough to simply pick up a camera and snap away, without professional training or experience handling young babies. With subjects as small and fragile as newborns, it is paramount that newborn photographers are professionally trained, and also insured, to ensure the safety of the baby at all times.” As one of the leading newborn photographers in the UK, The Guild of Photographers’ ‘Photographer of the Year’ 2013 and the very first Craftsman of Children’s photography, it’s a message she is keen to promote.
She is making it her mission to educate parents who are considering commissioning a newborn photographer particularly since the industry is currently unregulated. Her work as a professional trainer in newborn photography is also ensuring the message reaches other professionals working in this highly specialised genre, which currently shows no signs of waning in popularity.

AB Aquatics Landscaping & aquatic specialists
Even on those cold, wet winter mornings when he's up to his armpits in freezing cold mud and sludge, he still has a smile on his face.
9 Wilson Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 1PF, United Kingdom, +44 (0) 130 5 250139 arkadiaRoad, magazine
Water way to do things... AB Aquatics was started in 2009, after many years of working in the aquatics and landscaping field, Arron, the company director, felt he could offer a more personnel touch to what he does and also to his clients, With client care being of high importance to him the business has gone from strength to strength. AB Aquatics caters for everything water related and also associated landscaping, specialising in both. Their creations are always bespoke and individual, they're not shy of the more radical projects that get presented to them, alongside the more everyday requests. Arron has worked in the aquatic industry for over 16 years and in that time worked on some very impressive projects all over the country, from stately homes to RHS gardens. In 2001 he gained his degree in aquaculture and fisheries science and since then hasn't looked back. AB Aquatics have a very good working relationship with other local companies who are in the similar field, this allows them to offer their clients the very best knowledge and information on a wide spectrum within the water environment, from chemical weed control to riverine habitat management. AB Aquatics are highly trained and employ highly skilled contractors, all of whom are immersed in the joy of what they do and have worked together for many years. AB Aquatics have become certified installers for market leading brands such as Oase and Firestone pond liners, this allows them to install products without voiding warranties and offering clients exceptional guarantees. AB Aquatics offer a huge range of services from design through to construction, all the way on to maintenance packages. They can offer their clients a 'turn key' solution for any project of any size, be it a residential address or a national park. AB Aquatics is devoted to improving natural habitat for wildlife and whenever possible will use natural and ecologically sourced material. They strongly disagree with using pre made pieces as this takes away the individuality, the distinct design that every pond or water feature should have. Their work is as individual as their clients. arkadia magazine
Lucy Tidsbury Fine Art I am a full time artist living in the Isle of Purbeck in the heart of Dorset. I live on a sheep farm with my partner, surrounded by wildlife, farm animals and of course, doggies. Steeple Leaze farm is also a campsite and every day we see many animals of all shapes and sizes, which is an inspiration and a bit of distraction from my fine art. Painting pet portraits is a work of love for me, I love painting all animals from Dogs and Cats to Horses, Alpacas, Cows and even Ducks! I gained a Diploma in Fine Art at the Bournemouth Arts Institute and went on to do my BA Degree in Fine Art at the University of Chichester in 2007. Since then I have worked in various jobs, done a bit of travelling before deciding to go for it full time with my Art in 2014, best decision I’ve ever made. As well as spending my time painting, I also attend a lot of local shows throughout the year, one I’m very much looking forward to this year is the Harmony at Larmer Tree event in May. I exhibit my work including my cow paintings as well as my hand painted gifts, my ‘Moo’ coasters and placemats have been particularly popular at the Country Fairs! These events are a great opportunity not only to sell my work, but to meet people and their pets, although I paint the portraits from photos it’s always great to meet the pets if I can, so I can get to know their personality and unique characteristics as this is what will make the painting that bit special. I’m also taking part in Purbeck Art Weeks this year for the first time and my work will be displayed at Rollington,. You can find out about all the events I’m taking part in on my website. I am currently available for private commissions and you can find out more about me and my work at www.lucyspetportraits.com

Bozley Crafts Jewellery 'Chainmaille' jewellery, the name conjures up different images for everyone. Some hear “Chainmaille” and think of knights of old, rampaging Vikings or fantasy epics, others hear the word “Jewellery” and see precious metals and gems. What we make at Bozley Crafts Jewellery is a combination of both. It combines the ancient art of linking rings to produce stunning chains. The masters of the craft, from Roman/Greek/Ottoman and ancient Chinese times, produced works of art, as do the craftsmen nowadays, to adorn people around the world. For example the Byzantine chain (pronounced Bee Zan Teen Ah), whether for a necklace or a bracelet, is a staple style that should be in everyone's jewellery wardrobe. We can make this and almost any other style, in any number. As jewellery is a unisex product, our styles can be made to suit your individual personal preferences. We use a number of different materials, from Copper and Brass, and the alloy of those metals i.e. Bronze, through to the 'new' materials, Stainless Steel and Aluminium, the last being very versatile as it is light yet strong and can be anodised to any colour in the rainbow. Precious metals, i.e. gold and silver can be used. Some of our pieces are enhanced by using Swarovski Crystals and Swarovski crystal pearls, giving another dimension in the spectrum of avaliable colours.
Are you going on holiday or on a cruise this year? Would you like to dress up for the meal at the captains table? Are you nervous about taking your “real” jewellery with you. If your answers are “Yes”, you can stun the rest of the party at your table with a unique, glamorous piece of bespoke handmade jewellery that will have everyone intrigued about the provenance of the piece. At Bozley Crafts Jewellery we can make such a piece and at a cost that will not break the bank.

Summer is the busiest time for Weymouth so plan ahead, use the Park & Ride or take the train. Beach Cafe, sponsored by Finn Square. The star of last year’s event was the humble whelk, thousands of which were served up. This year the team is focusing on cockles, clams and oysters with a warm ‘whelkcome’ back- with support from top chefs Nigel Bloxham, Jack Stein, Dave Giles, Gill Meller, Pete Miles, Russell Brown, Taher Jibet, Matthew Budden and Mat Follas. Pommery UK Director, Sara Hicks says: ‘Time to relax. Dip into one of the many Pommery bars around the harbour where you can taste some of Pommery’s award winning champagnes. Pommery is a perfect partner with seafood, so enjoy a glass of Pommery Brut Royal with Dorset Oysters, expertly shucked by Pete Miles and his team from Storm & The Cruel Sea.’ Summer is the busiest time for Weymouth so plan ahead, use the Park & Ride or take the train. We get the low down on the four piece showdown!!!
Perhaps it’s easier to say we never started out wanting to be in a band, or to be musicians and I still use that term loosely! As a band we just like to have a good time and enjoy writing our own stuff… If you told us that we would be playing festivals and going on 'BBC Introducing' we would have all laughed out loud! To start with it was just Billy and I, when we got back from a game of football one Sunday, Billy had his guitar and
I just started playing a bit, by the following week we had our first gig as a duo. After some time Josh bumped into Billy and got chatting about music and asked if we were up for a jam? The rest is history. Before we knew it we were a trio, travelling around Dorset, Devon, London and Essex playing 5-6 gigs a week! As the band continued to grow, we knew we had to dedicate our time to it fully so we gave up our jobs and became full-time musicians - a gratifying thing in itself. I don’t meet many a folk that do what they love as a job! About 10 months ago, Josh and I went over to the States to check out the music scene in the South. It influenced us a lot, we got the bug to write and spend more time developing our music. We decided we needed a bigger sound with drum kit and bass guitar. We began looking but didn’t really advertise that these changes were going to be made, we wanted to make sure we found the right person - someone we would get on with - enter Will Quick. As I recall we didn’t even rehearse with Will to begin with... Will just listened to the tracks and pitched up at a gig with guitar and amp in hand – it was great to jam with a whole band.
More recently we got a call from 'BBC Introducing the South' with Melita Dennett. We made the trip down to Brighton and played a Live Lounge set which was epic. The film of us on the show can be seen on our website www.theleggomen.com After the Live Lounge we rushed to another gig in Brighton, we loved the music scene down there and look forward to going back. After playing BBC Introducing, more and more doors starting opening for us, we even supported a young solo artist called SOAK, who a few weeks later was featured on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. For right now though, we are coming into festival season and things are getting busier and busier – we are all looking forward to what the summer will bring! We are also finishing our 2nd EP and we hope to launch it later this year – watch this space! Olly Coe, The Leggomen

fter initially setting out from school to study Geology, and then a stint in South frica, I knew I had to return home and do what I was always meant to be doing.
Learning and reading is a huge passion of mine, but I've been drawing since my earliest memories. At senior school I felt encouraged to fall into an industry where I could make money and have a good opportunity by securing a stable career, but I found myself at University drawing in the everyday tedious lectures. Glad to say however, that I don’t have regrets about dropping that life, I'm hungry for this one and currently in my second year of a BA in Fine Art. Inspired by the workings of the natural world, my roots as an artist are sourced from an upbringing in the Isle of Purbeck. My work is influenced by a fascination with philosophical pondering and psychoanalysis, I create work that takes a view on understanding ourselves and the problem of 'life as a human being'. The subjects I use in my work act as a visual metaphor to challenge and question an audience's perception of 'living' and the personal fulfilment in their own lives.
We are the only beings, with the concept of death attached to us our whole lives, and the rationality we are born with means we can choose not to follow a path of basic existence. We spend our whole lives striving for more. Themes of existence in modern society are important to me, I feel that our culture lacks mindfulness in the World we live in and wrap themselves so tightly in the trivia. Mortality is consistent and recurring in my work, it’s become a gateway to express my own conflict with making the most of time and the inevitable end, it sounds morbid but I find that using my work to face up to mortality gives me the strength to try and live a life by my values. I am conscious of a society we live in, that appears to act as slaves to repeat cycles of existence. I usually work big, on large rolls of fabriano. I hate small drawings. I like the intense proximity of a big drawing, and the journey I take with a small drawing is too short, and in the end it’s all about the journey you take with your art, a slow growing obsession of a piece is much more exciting. Emerging as an artist is an extremely difficult task, I've had to live and breathe fine art and take hold of every opportunity passed to me with vigour and undivided attention, but I have found thearkadia local support is magazine incredible in this small place of home, and has been a big driving force behind my work.
A Marriage Made...
We catch up with the wedding combo that is Budd/Penny, Richard Budd, one of Dorsets better known Photographers, and the wonderfully frantic, beautifully talented, Fiona Penny (Fiona Penny at Sunflowers ) we let them, in their own words, tell the story of why it works, how it works and the dynamics that keep these two going at 200 mph! Richard Budd Wedding Photography in the words of Fiona Penny. 4 words to describe Richard…. cool… calm… mysterious and professional. "I have asked Richard to come along with me to a few weddings we have done to get some great shots of our flowers. He’s always early, waiting on the doorstep and raring to go. Shooting away before I’ve even told him the plan... but really, I don’t need to. There’s never a set plan, I just let him follow me around while I’m creating my flowers. I don’t even notice him there, apart from maybe helping me to hoist up a large hanging ball in a marquee or assisting me to centre some large displays and he always has gadgets with him to help me attach items." "The parachute rope came in handy at one wedding! I’m amazed when I see the end result of the photos he’s taken, from arriving at the shop, watching me making the bouquets, packing them up, loading, driving to the venue and unloading the van and setting up. The end result totally amazes me with the shots he has taken and not even realising he’d taken some of them! Capturing the concentration on my face as I’m adding bits here and there to create the perfect setting for my bride. He hides in the background in his usual black attire and moves around slowly waiting for the perfect moments to capture the perfect shots!" A true professional and amazing photographer!
Working together – team players help make your day outstanding... What Richard Budd Photography has to say about Florist
Fiona Penny at Sunflowers.
“I’ve been shooting weddings for some years now and come across all types of suppliers – people always ask me for recommendations. The way I address this is to recommend people I firstly trust and secondly do an outstanding job in their field of expertise. Fiona Penny is one of those people
In Heaven. .
Fiona has a great work ethic and is my 'go-to' wedding florist. She creates amazing creations and her attention to detail is superb. It’s always a pleasure to see her arrive on the wedding day with boxes of goodies, I can’t wait to photograph the items, be it button holes, wedding bouquets or table settings. It’s a special element of the day and creates lasting memories. Fiona adds to calmness and professionalism that starts your wedding day the way it should – with you in mind.“

Drifting along nicely... Words Danny Nash Images Jodie Whyte From the days of living 'off grid' to now working in a converted stable block, just outside Bransgore, spookily covered in spiders cobwebs, and a wall of shavings, dust and tools covered in sawdust, possibly a sheep or two popping in, a lot has changed for Wayne Willetts of 'Surfmirrors.com', and you can see the boy loves it, he works alone and he creates in his mind and lays it out on the work surfaces in front of him. Wayne has created many an avenue from his mass collection of driftwood and reclaimed wood; wine racks, surf mirrors, his beautifully crafted large driftwood pieces, down to his portholes and box-crates. The guy has vision, now with a mass of followers on Facebook, and a great collection of fans on the artisan show scene (find Wayne at most of Arkadia Events programmes) it looks like his fan base will be continuing to grow! He was driving his 'campervan' (converted transit) and in his own words "it pulled off to the right and into this drive of a farm, I fell in love with the vision and the sanctuary, the feel of the place, I knocked on the farm house door and asked if I could rent some space, seven years later, I'm still here..." Here is home for the ex windsurfing, chilled out guy, we visit and immediately Wayne has the hot plate on, salad prepped and bean burgers ready to go on the grill. This is his way of life, and it works, giving him plenty of time to focus his energies on his work, crafting beautiful items that you can find in outlets across Dorset - take a trip to 'Latimer House' in Christchurch to fully absorb Wayne's work.
With a license to 'beach comb', one of the only people given this honour in the UK, he's allowed to legally collect driftwood from a stretch of beach on the South Coast, he literally has the pick of the bunch, and it shows in his creations. A lifetime of fresh sea air, riding waves and living off the land, has given Wayne a real empathy with his work, it feels like you've a history on your wall, something unique that is for your home alone... The first mirror he made took the chap three days, now you can have 'signage' for your home, your campervan, summer house or your loo.. Having become a firm friend of the mag, and being on the events scene with us for sometime, his beautiful mirrors are made to order, and can be sized to suit, so get on the phone to Wayne before the rest! Once a thermal insulation engineer, then sheet metal worker, then windsurf board shaper, now, seven years learning his craft 'in-house' this is a proper skill, as he sets up a mirror for a client, he shows me marks made by 'gribblers' and says you just cant reproduce that... I take him at his word?!?
Coda Music Centre The sound track to life, learning, and a lot of fun
Based on a former Victorian farm on the Dorset/ Hampshire border nestles a unique resource. Coda music trust is the only music centre of its kind in the region which provides a range of musical opportunities to people of all ages and abilities - with facilities dedicated to teaching, music groups, choirs, workshops, training, music therapy and music for health and wellbeing. If you're looking for classes for your little ones, Coda offers music groups for toddlers and tots from age 18 months upwards. Music-making builds creativity and communication skills as well as mental and physical co-ordination. Most of all, it's a lot of fun and these groups provide the best possible introduction to enjoying and learning to play music. It's never too early - or too late - to benefit from learning an instrument. Coda provides tuition in guitar, piano, drums, strings, woodwind - as well as vocal tuition- and offers a bursary scheme to support students who may have difficulty affording the full cost of lessons. In addition to classes and tuition, Coda delivers Music Therapy and projects across the region. Music Therapy uses music to transform even the most hard-to-reach individuals and has been found to be effective across a wide range of conditions including Alzheimer's and autism. Coda also devise and deliver music projects with schools and communities across Dorset and Hampshire, often tackling difficult issues of social deprivation or crime and isolation. One such project is the fantastic Coda Fiddle Orchestra, which has been working with children and young people in Bournemouth for seven years. Over 400 people learn at Coda each week and, in response to increased demand, the centre is currently undergoing expansion. The disused piggery on Coda's farm site, last used for livestock in 1995, is currently being developed to provide five new spaces in which to deliver its ever-expanding instrumental tuition and workshop programme. The refurbishment will almost double Coda's capacity for teaching, enabling the charity to both meet demand and diversify into new areas. Happily, this also means Coda can invite new students for music tuition. Drop into the ‘Coda Social’ café at the centre for cake and a barista-made coffee and you may well bump into Ollie Murs or Cheryl Cole taking a break from recording at ‘The Beach’ on-site recording studio.

Purbeck Art Weeks Festival: A Celebration of Art for Everyone The PAW Festival has gone from strength to strength since its launch 15 years ago. Domvs is hugely proud this year to be a major sponsor of what has become a celebration of the very best of Dorset's art and culture: from sculpture and photography to music and dance. More than 100 of our finest artists and creatives - working in every imaginable medium - will be showcasing their skills at the two-week-long festival, which opens on May 23, with an unveiling of a stylised dinosaur as it emerges from a painted cave on Swanage sea front. Domvs is playing a key role in the fortnight, hosting a very special exhibition - at their Wareham office - of unique flags designed by talented youngsters working with special needs groups in Swanage and Wareham. A Colourful Partnership evening at Not Just Sundaes community cafĂŠ in Wareham on May 28 at 6.00pm will also feature the flags, as well as songs and cakes. Tickets - which cost just ÂŁ5 - can be bought directly from Domvs. The Out of the Depths theme aims to tap into the richness of the Jurassic cliffs that influence the Purbeck landscape and the creativity of its people. With a dazzling array of events, there is truly something for everyone, as well as a welcome return for old festival favourites such as the Fieri Consort, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Gabrieli Consort & Players
Tickets for all events are available at www.purbeckartweeks.co.uk and at tourist offices in Wareham and Swanage.

The buyers are out there, and hungry. As Domvs' recent, hugely successful seminar at Kingston Maurward proved, buy-to-let has never been more popular, spurred on by the new, relaxed pension rules. But don't worry if you missed it: we'll be announcing a new, summer seminar soon. Dorset is fast becoming Britain’s Florida, the discerning home-buyer’s destination of choice. We have the location, we have the weather, we have the coast and - of course - we have the property. Polly Greenway of Domvs inset
Keen demand demands expert supply. And that’s where Domvs truly excels: seamlessly matching up the two. We are proud to belong to the exclusive Fine & Country network made up of more than 275 offices together with 100 international outlets, giving Domvs unique access to buyers around the world. Our property exhibition at their London office in March again proved enormously popular, yet more proof that buyers are increasingly looking to Dorset for its peerless relocation lifestyle. But this is an ever-changing market in challenging times. While we will always fiercely believe in the personal approach, we also know that our inspirational property demands edge, nous, technology and platform. Dorset is increasingly popular with clients relocating from the UK and overseas. Fine & Country’s global reach empowers our customers by enabling us to embrace this important market. At Domvs, we don't believe in resting on our laurels. In a joint venture with Duke's auctioneers, we have launched a much-loved series of Antiques Roadshow-style events. You can bring your antiques or heirlooms into our Wareham office for their experts to evaluate, for free. Our next event is May 1, followed by several other exciting dates throughout the year. We firmly believe in community and that is why we are again sponsoring a string of key festivals in the county this summer, from Cattistock's Dorset Knob Throwing (May 3) to the Spring Tide Festival in Burton Bradstock (May 16-17) to Purbeck Art Weeks (May 23 to June 7). We hope to see you all there: it's set to be a truly glorious Dorset summer!
