I struggled to know what to write here as I cannot talk about art school and consequent dream of success. I started painting when I was 30 through the influence of my partner’s sister who is an artist, and when brush hit the canvas, that was it.

So, from my shed, next to the tumble drier in the dead of night (I have 3 small children and a job as a cook, so painting in the daytime, no chance!!) I was hooked and wanted to learn more to the point of obsession. I never stopped painting, painting over old paintings if I had no canvases, I would think that by the time I am actually happy with a finished painting, there is probably about five previous pictures underneath!

My influences range from Caravaggio, to my children’s drawings, of which I have used in quite a few of my paintings, I also incorporate aspects of street art, graffiti and portraiture into my work.

Bob Cosford’s Flying Sausage There are a few British artists that have defined a generation, Peter Blake and the swinging sixties, Damien Hirst in the Britpop nineties and between them Bob Cosford with his illustration that everyone of my age will always remember from the late seventies.

If you don’t know, Bob was the man responsible for the iconic title sequence of Grange Hill, Brookside creator Phil Redmond’s secondary school drama that ran for over 30 years and introduced us to youth heroes Tucker and Zammo. I grew up with the Grange Hill pupils, I started secondary school the same year they did, and before they went on strike I never realised that students were supposed to have rights - these were the good old days of flying board rubbers rather than flying sausages!

Bob Cosford, is unassuming as we sit in his Boscombe home, eating lemon drizzle cake and discussing the legacy of his most celebrated artwork. “To be totally honest, I’ve never watched Grange Hill, ever. I was a generation too old, it’s only recently that I’ve realised how amazingly important it was to people who watched it.” And it’s still important, a print of the flying sausage sequence signed by Bob and Zammo (actor Lee MacDonald) recently sold for nearly £200 on eBay to raise money for Comic Relief.

Moving to Boscombe 4 years ago from his native London, Bob has become an established part of the town’s active art scene but does he draw inspiration from the traditional ‘kiss me quick’ personality of the seaside? “I imagine that there’s a lot of artists who get their inspiration from the area around them, when we moved down I made a conscious decision not to

do that. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing, there’s some fantastic stuff out there. If you lived here all of your life you’re probably more influenced by it. Having said all that I have created 3 prints base on surfing which have proved very popular, they’re made to look as if they’ve been painted on driftwood. We love it here, we go down to the beach everyday, take the dog down there, if you live by the sea you’ve got to have a dog. We haven’t met one person yet who’s got a bad thing to say about Bournemouth.”

One of the great things about Bob Cosford is his total lack of the pretentiousness that can afflict some members of the artistic world. Is this because illustrators have a commercial background and suffer from not being seen as “proper” artists?

“I think there’s a certain snobbishness about Artists with a capital A. “It does depend, if there’s an exceptionally gifted illustrator, like my friend David Hughes who was asked to design the sets for an opera in Italy, he gets involved in amazing things like that. I suppose that his work is acclaimed, if you put his work alongside an established artist their work would be considered the same, but because he’s doing it commercially there’s still that thing attached to it that it’s a bit of a dirty business I suppose.”

Even Michelangelo had to do commercial works for his patrons to pay the bill. “Obviously some didn’t, van Gogh went mad and cut his ear off because he never got paid, I didn’t really fancy that. I need to earn an income. So I run a small gallery called Eyedreampictures in the old Victorian Royal Arcade in Boscombe. It’s been open now for 20mths and features a range of work including my own, and other local artist’s.

As my art moved away from comic illustration I started experimenting with photomontage with digital hand drawing to create a much more urban feel that reflected political, social and cultural themes. I’ve also started working with mixed media to create a series of fairground art resembling panels literally ripped from a fairground ride. The artwork is cut up then reassembled and riveted together, hand finished, textured and distressed. Because of the significantly different styles I decided to work under three different pseudonyms DIABLO, PURE GOLD and HENRYG as well as my own name. I call it my personal collective and put the work ‘out there’ hoping people will fall in love with it, and want to buy it to put on their walls.”

There’s a Roy Lichtenstein print on the wall of Bob’s front room, so does he believe that this most celebrated of illustrators has made the crossover into mainstream art with his recent Retrospective exhibition at the Tate? “He nicked all of his ideas from comics, he reproduced them beautifully, he recreated them and changed them a bit, they were big and everything was hand painted, but he basically just nicked things.”

So has his most iconic work made him a wealthy man? “I don’t have the original of the Grange Hill artwork, the designer who commissioned it has it. It’s all in bits as it was made up to be animated.

If I was in the music industry I’d get royalties every time it was shown. As an illustrator it’s not really like that. The Grange Hill art was on TV recently on one of these back the the 80’s shows. If that was a piece of music I’d get paid

automatically through the Performing Rights Society. As an illustrator I literally have to see an image of mine that’s being used before being able to claim anything. The problem was we didn’t get our act together early on like the musicians did, but good luck to them” So, thirty-five years on the flying sausage is still a part of British culture and even it’s creator has started to realise that for a certain generation that image still defines their school years as much as wearing their tie skinny side out or writing Frankie Says Relax on their school books .

Creating a buzz...

I have recently self-diagnosed myself as having O.C.C.D ‘Obsessive Compulsive Drawing Disorder’.

(O.C.D.D?) This has meant that I am obsessed with detail and enjoy the challenge of capturing the essence of what I am drawing. I am not interested in depicting whatever I'm drawing in a hyper realistic way. I have drawn my whole life but my formal qualifications are a BA Hons and an MA in Fine Art Printmaking.

The immediacy of drawing allows me to keep producing work whilst running my gallery. Printmaking is a much more time consuming affair.

I am fascinated with all aspects of nature, it started with birds. The truth is birds are still fluttering around my studio as I don't think I'll ever stop being fascinated by them and going 'cold turkey' isn't an option.(Pun intended?!)

It seemed perfectly natural to move from birds to bees.

There is now a buzz around my studio. My interest in bees happened at the same time as the national news was full of stories about the decline of bees in Britain. This has meant that my new work has been very well received. Some of my biggest collectors are from the local bee keeping communities. In fact when I was just focusing on bumblebees, apiarists were bugging (Pun intended?!) me to draw honeybees. I was happy to oblige.

I'm currently working on two separate bodies of work to do with bees at the moment. 'Bees you can see in your garden'. I'm trying to show people the huge variety of bees that they can literally find on their doorstep. The second is a 'Rainbow of Bees' as bees do come in every colour of the rainbow.

A little information about my choice of materials. People constantly ask me about the 'brand' of pencil I use. The truth is I use whatever does the job. That's not to say there aren't some very expensive pencils in my repertoire but for every top quality pencil I own, I have 20 non brand pencils that I use equally as much.

The brown paper is just wrapping paper and my preferred 'brand' is IKEA. I'm fully aware that I am following a long tradition of artists who are constantly fascinated by the minutiae of nature.

Debbie Court is taking the art of Papier-mâché to another plane!

When I was at primary school, I helped to make a life-sized cow from papier-mâche. It was an amazing project and I’ve never forgotten it.

After studying music at university, I enjoyed a career in teaching and arts marketing and now work with disabled adults, but I’ve always felt a need to draw and create things. Two years ago, while browsing YouTube, I came across a woman called Jonni Good who was making beautiful papier mache animals, and suddenly I was back in primary school with that cow! I bought Jonni’s book and started making some of her animals and I became totally obsessed.

Almost immediately, I preferred making human figures and I started experimenting with different techniques and materials and developing my own style. I try to make my sculptures almost completely of paper and so I’ve abandoned the typical wire armature and instead, make mine from scrunched newspaper, masking tape and sometimes a wooden cocktail stick to attach the head.....paper is from wood after all! I dress my figures in paper clothes and, apart from a little acrylic paint for skin tones, use coloured tissue paper to colour them – like decoupage. It’s a very satisfying technique - although the detailed work is incredibly fiddly to do – and I get a weird sense of pride that my sculptures are now 99.9% paper.

I show my work in exhibitions and galleries and I’m beginning to get more commissions which I love. Commissions are always a challenge and they encourage experimentation because you never know what you may be asked to do or how you’re going to do it. I’ve recently been asked to sculpt a conductor, an Oxbridge Don in full academic robes and even a football enthusiast wearing the West Ham strip! I wouldn’t take on a commission if I didn’t feel I could do a good job and I only do one-offs – I would never want to make the same piece twice.

I sculpt every day, sometimes for several hours without realising it. Papier-mâche is my passion and I can’t imagine life without it. arkadia magazine

It’s the year 2002, I remember it vividly. DJ Tiesto, the God of trance in his prime is owning the stage at Gods Kitchen’s fourth birthday at the now long time closed and legendary Sanctuary in Milton Keynes. Before him, a 9,000 strong and sweaty sea of dedicated ravers surrounded by vibrantly decorated giant stilt walkers, illuminated by an elaborate light show and dancing insistently with glow sticks in hand throughout his eclectic, energetic and mesmerizing set. The atmosphere was like nothing I had ever experienced and I could feel that this was my calling.

Since taking to the turntables all those years ago, I am still learning. DJ’ing has become a technical and digital minefield with DJ’s now using CD’s, computer software and even iPods to DJ with. Luckily, for vinyl junkies such as myself, the time coded vinyl which reads mp3’s from computer software is a godsend allowing us to continue using the original, and in my eyes, most skilled and satisfying method. Technology however, as brilliant as it is when it works, can fail on occasion and leave a DJ twiddling thumbs with no way to play.

Not only will choosing vinyl eliminate this problem, but it will keep your reputation intact too!

Getting ready for a gig can be tricky depending on the size of your record collection which, for the majority of DJ’s, can be vast. Your choice of music needs to tie in with what the crowd will be expecting at the venue, but also needs to consist of a series of options as the direction you decide to take will not always create the dance floor hungry response you were hoping for. Keeping the customers happy is important, although I have seen many a DJ dismiss this vital factor, playing music they want to play for themselves and losing their initially loyal crowd as a result. It’s always good to test the water with a few different kinds of tracks, see what people respond to and lean in whichever direction is dictated by their response. But with all this in mind, it is also important to retain your identity as a DJ, playing music which is a reflection of what gets you ticking. You will gain fans and followers because of your tune selection and style of DJ’ng so always stay true to who you are and the feelings you want to invoke with your music.

I was very fortunate to land a set at London’s famous Ministry Of Sound nightclub back in November last year, playing tough, progressive house with trance elements, in keeping with the harder trance direction of the DJ’s who followed me. It’s important to ensure that the event as a whole is tailored to take the ravers on a journey, one which bubbles at the start and ends with a bang. My next gig will be at Deep Down Dirtys ’50 Shades Of House’ in Shoreditch where I’ll be playing the opening set comprised of funky house, leading to tribal house and finishing with some deep acid house, and my set will be followed by DJ’s playing harder genres of house as the night progresses. I'll also be throwing in a sprinkling of my live vocals within instrumental tracks to compliment those tracks and give the ravers some extra entertainment! If you can master the art of providing whatever music is necessary for an event, and provide something a little different which sets you apart from the rest if you can, you’ll be set for a successful career in the field.

The world of social media is playing a huge part in the lives of modern DJ’s with online networking now being as much at the heart of their professional progression as getting out there and mingling with promoters at nights they may want to play at. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have become vital tools for networking and promoting my radio shows on Voice FM 103.9, Afro-disiac Live and Progressive Beats Radio.

Although I love every minute of interacting with my existing and potential listeners and pushing my event pages out to relevant audiences, there’s always that fear of waking up one day to a face with square eyes.

If you are reading this article and thinking, ‘hmm this sounds interesting, I’d really love to be able to play my favourite dance music as a DJ and not just as a listener’, I urge you to give it a go. Some take to it like a duck to water, others like myself all those years ago, take a little longer to get the hang of it. Some take it on in their teens, others later on in life.

Whichever categories you may fall into, once you lock those two tracks together for the first time you will fall in love with being in control of the music you hold close to your heart and learn a therapeutic, highly enjoyable new skill in the process, one which could open up doors for you to a whole new world of music

If you haven’t yet heard about this wonderful place yet, then you’ve been missing out on one of the most surprising days out in Dorset! Only a couple of miles from Bridport, the village of Symondsbury is in a unique location, tucked away beneath Colmers Hill one of the better known hallmarks of this beautiful part of West Dorset Symondsbury Estate is privately owned and has been in the Colfox family for over 150 years. With a strong belief in supporting local business you will find many items are created by local artists and companies and some of the items have been created at Manor Yard.

Symondsbury Kitchen is currently headed by a newly appointed Manager, ‘JP’ who not only loves the Café’s locally sourced menu, but seems to be constantly in a state of relaxed happiness! The atmosphere in the Café is relaxed, comfortable and seating includes arm-chairs, sofas and a wood burner, so customers can enjoy the ambience with a feeling of home from home. The Menu is as creative as you’ll find in Dorset. The cooks pride themselves in the fact that the food is fresh, seasonal, made on the premises and most of the fresh herbs & vegetables are either grown in the Estate vegetable garden or locally sourced. Come and relax with food and drink either inside or outside on the lovely sunny terrace to admire the view of Colmers Hill or the thatched roofs of the newly renovated old stables.

Alison is the owner of Busy Bee’s florist. A lovely lady, full of the joys of owning and running a beautiful business from this energetic site, her love of flowers has been part of her world since a very small child. Alison says “My dear Grandma had a small holding in Devon and grew many different types of flowers, fruit and vegetables as well as having an orchard where we had so many adventures. As a country girl she had great knowledge of the hedgerow and wild flowers which I like to think she passed on to me. I was always trying to make displays from primroses, cowslips, bluebells and twigs, so working with flowers as a business comes naturally.”

Pop into ‘Colmers Hill Fashion’, an independent women’s fashion boutique with an eye for the unusual in designer clothing. Clothes that will flatter and feel good to wear because of the beautiful fabrics and cuts, all delivered with knowledge and a flair for the right look for every occasion.

There is also a very cool hair & beauty salon “The Shed” which is located in the main yard.

1. How did it all begin, has this been an ambition to paint since a young girl?

Since I was a child I have always been highly creative with a passion for the arts. I aspired to be a fashion/ costume designer or an artist. I was inspired by parents; my father who is a talented artist and photographer and my mother who is a talented dressmaker. Throughout my education in Wareham I was fortunate, as both schools had a vibrant art and music focus, led by some extremely talented teachers who really inspired me.

I studied art, fashion & marketing and was drawn to an initial career in PR and Marketing - which I am equally as passionate about. I decided that I would pursue and establish this career first, and then return to launch my art. I have spent an amazing 15 years within Arts and Charity sectors, which I love, specialising in Communications. In 2012 I decided it was time to pick up my brushes and paint! I excitedly launched my first collection in the same year and exhibited as part of Dorset Art Weeks. It was an incredible, yet nerve racking experience to share my work with everyone for the first time!

You seem to enjoy painting in tones of blue – any reason for that?

My paintings to me depict magical moonlit scenes that inspire tranquillity and calmness. However, I always leave it to the viewer to define their experience. These shades of blue are still currently my favourite pallette of colours to work with, I still have so many places to paint in this colourway! I am often asked when and what will my new colours will be - well I can say that a vibrant new pallette of colours are on the horizon for this year.

Is it all canvas work that you sell, do you have an online presence?

My original paintings are acrylic on canvas, when completed they are professionally scanned and re-produced into small limited edition framed prints. They are frequently purchased in trios, as I am often told my paintings evoke happy memories of favourite places, holidays or of growing up in the area. I also paint a number of private commissions for clients. I have a website www.esmejames.co.uk where I sell my work nationally and internationally.

Esme James Were you naturally gifted at art, or is this something you’ve learnt and adapted?

I have been extremely fortunate to have been encouraged to draw, paint and craft from an early age. However, I firmly believe that anyone can create, paint or draw, and my greatest pleasure is to inspire others to do so. My skills and knowledge developed further as I was tutored by some exceptionally talented lecturers whilst studying Art & Design at Bournemouth and Poole College, and Fashion, Textiles & Marketing at the Arts University Bournemouth.

You live in Wareham, have you drawn inspiration from the area and the coastline?

I grew up in Wareham and ever since I was a child I have always been inspired by the Isle of Purbeck and the dramatic Jurassic Coastline. As a child my imagination was fuelled, as I learnt about dinosaurs that had once walked here and I was fascinated to learn about the unique geology and landforms of the area. The imposing mystical ruins of Corfe Castle, nestled within the Purbeck Hills have captivated me. I have always known and felt that this area is a special place and it will continue to be my greatest muse.

Have you always lived locally, what is your favourite spot in your County, does this inspire your work?

I have always lived in Dorset, apart from moving to Sydney, Australia to work for international charity, Greenpeace Australia Pacific. The Isle of Purbeck is my favourite spot in Dorset and a continuing source of inspiration - it’s full of all of my favourite places!

Where can we see your work?

The Salt Pig, Wareham; Cameron and Talbot Furniture, Wareham; National Trust Tea Rooms, Corfe Castle; Dorset Cottage Holidays, Corfe Castle. I have a number of exhibitions throughout the year and also exhibit with Phoenix Arts & Crafts, a highly skilled group of local artists and makers.

Overlooking the majestic sweep of Chesil Beach and the wide expanse of Lyme Bay, The Seaside Boarding House Restaurant & Bar is an oasis of informal sophistication.

Created by former Groucho Club MD and Chairman, Mary-Lou Sturridge & Tony Mackintosh, it is elegant yet relaxed; comprising a classic restaurant, a proper cocktail bar & luxurious bedrooms with a view of the sea.

A slate grey sea-facing terrace, provides a spectacular space for long lunches, sundowners and rare, balmy, windless suppers.

At one end of the terrace is the Bar. Classic yet comfortable, it is light and inviting by day then a warm cosy sanctuary by night. Expert staff can shake, muddle or stir up your favourite cocktail or suggest something to fit the mood.

The restaurant echoes gentler times; a wall of French windows overlooks the ever-changing seascape of Lyme Bay. To encourage excellent dining, Mary-Lou persuaded gastro legend Alastair Little to come out of restaurant hiatus and marshal the kitchen.

Dorset & the West Country teems with great smallholdings and artisan produce and Alastair works with a team of talented young local chefs in the Seaside Boarding House kitchen to create an already celebrated, but unpretentious menu.

Ever changing the menu features deep flavoured Winter dishes like Bourride. As Spring arrives so does locally grazed roast Lamb, tangy Vietnamese beef salad, or luxurious Turbot & chips. Cranborne Garden Centre is looking forward to a busy spring 2016 season. There is nothing in this world like waking up in Africa, a coffee appearing on the verandah of your luxurious ‘tent’, stepping outside into the crisp fresh air with the excitement and anticipation of what you might see this morning as you watch the sun rise over the bush while sipping your coffee.

The first time that you get close to the amazing power of a Lion is a moment that you will never forget, the first time you walk through the African bush, the first time you turn a corner in your 4x4 game vehicle and see Elephant in the middle of the road…all these are just the start of what there is to see, it is impossible to put into words the beauty of the nature and the scenery in Africa and once you are hooked you will be longing to return.

The feeling of excitement on safari is something primal, the anticipation and suspense when you set off on foot or in a vehicle looking for wildlife, the surge of adrenaline when you come across big game and the exhilaration of tracking the prints of a big cat left that morning. These encounters are so intense that the memories of such experiences last with you long after the moment has passed.

On your return from your evening game drive, you will be greeted with a warm towel to remove any dust from your hands and face, you will be escorted to your room to freshen up or to the bar to have a drink around the fire before dinner, a chance to regale your fellow travellers with your stories of travels past and present and to listen to theirs. This safari tradition of story telling never fails to result in me adding to the ever-growing list of places I must visit after listening to my safari companion’s tales.

Each destination in Africa offers something different, from the incredible density of Leopard in the South

Luangwa, Zambia to huge herds of Elephants in Tarangire, Tanzania or the palm fringed lakes of the Selous in Southern Tanzania. There are so many places to visits and all are unique, with each season bringing its own story to the local environment. It’s all this and the phenomenal number of different experiences to be had that compels people to visit this enchanting continent again and again.

There are so many possibilities, from classic luxury safaris to exciting remote walking trips and incredible sleepouts under the stars, from photography expeditions to family adventures. The destinations, styles of property, their locations, the guides… there are so many variables and planning a trip can be daunting.

I started The Safari Specialists to offer a new solution to arranging trips to Africa, a small and passionate company always focusing on what is going to create the most amazing experiences for our clients.

I first discovered a love for Africa at the age of 15 when I was lucky enough to be involved in a charity trip arrange by my school to Namibia, I was blown away by the scenery, the people and the wildlife, I credit this trip alone with embedding a love for travel and especially Africa deep in my soul.

Fortunate to spend a lot of my youth working as a tour leader and dive master all over the world, I have worked in the Safari and travel industry for around 7 years.

Starting as a tour leader for a Somerset based Overland company (Oasis Overland), then later as consultant selling Africa and the Middle East holidays for a well established tour operator before moving on to become a product manager and senior consultant at a London based Africa Specialist.

In 2014 I moved back to Africa to be assistant manager of Chinzombo, a camp owned by Norman Carr Safaris

in Zambia. This camp won ‘best new safari camp’ and was an absolute pleasure to work at. The experiences I had at this camp were simply outstanding. A lot of hard work, many hundreds of African sunrises and plenty stories to tell later it was time to come back and I decided to set up my own company.

The Safari Specialists is Dorset based, focusing on unforgettable experiences in amazing destinations across Africa, offering personal service, honest and expert advice wrapped up with a passion for the continent, the wilderness, the wildlife and the people.

The key to creating an amazing itinerary is in the planning and the knowledge of the person doing that planning. Arranging a safari holiday can be fairly simple, you go online, pick a holiday that meets your budget requirements or speak to a consultant who puts together the same itinerary they have a thousand times before, but these methods don’t give the best results. It is really getting to know someone, understanding what they like and just as importantly what they won’t like, learning what they expect from their trip and what is most important to them that will allow help to narrow down the thousands of options ending with the creation of the perfect trip not just a trip, and this is what we aim to do every time.

BREATH TAKING. I am a pencil portrait artist, striving for realism without losing the wonderful subtlety of the pencil marks themselves. I have drawn for as long as I can remember and am continually fascinated by the versatility of the medium.

My work focuses on contrast whether it is the destructive or creative human nature of the subjects I choose, or the tonal contrasts of the graphite.

I strive for realism through detail and honesty to every wrinkle, pore and hair which I use to breath life into my portraits.

I have always been fascinated about what sets people who achieve great status apart from normal folk.

What human attribute do they possess.

My theme throughout this series of drawings is 'Poets, Prophets, Villains and Madmen'.

Poets who write and create new visions of the world.

Prophets who spread the word and create and instigate change. Villains who destroy and break these rules and Madmen for whom rules do not exist.

The unique create/destruct corners of human nature.

For these attributes I have chosen people from music, film, art and politics and also images that appeal across generations.

My aim is to achieve an emotional reaction between the viewer with the infamous or famous status of the subject combined with my unique technical execution of the work. I want the viewer to be drawn in to the fine detail and play between pattern and tone of the pencil marks. I want people to see beauty in the work which is not immediately obvious I have a unique approach to my drawing focusing on texture, especially in the skin.

I don't look for shortcuts and hardly ever blend, smudge or shade my work [except in the matt black areas]. I vary the pressure as to how hard or soft I hold the pencil so it almost bounces across the paper.

I focus on all the basic elements to drawing, line, tone, texture, pattern and play with the contrast between light and dark to balance the tone in the work. I use a whole range of pencils from 6H to 8B and work on heavyweight cartridge paper.

While I work I frequently remind myself of Cezannes words that everything can be broken down to simply shapes, cubes, cylinders and then put together to make the whole. I have utmost admiration for MC Escher and I smile when I think of the pure genius of Picasso!!!

I have always been around the world of art in one way or another since leaving Art College with a Fine Art Degree a while ago. I was a Gallery Guide showing groups around Dulwich Arts Gallery where I embraced Art History. I was an Arts Specialist teaching art in primary schools and have held the post of Arts Coordintor twice. In 2011 I ran the largest Art Lesson in the world for our school, achieving a place in the Guinness Book of Records!!

Recently I have been concentrating full time on my own work and can let my obsessive nature and my addition to drawing flourish..

I started painting about seven or eight years ago after giving myself a Christmas present of an acrylic painting set of an alpine village. Now as art goes it certainly wasn't a masterpiece, but it gave me a great deal of satisfaction and I realised with a bit of practice and perseverance I could improve.

I got an 'A' in GCE Art way back when and have always loved anything arty. So I went to classes with Penny Wilton a well known local Dorset artist and after a while gained the experience I needed.

I discovered The Pine Walk in Bournemouth Gardens and later The Peacock Gallery [now The Gallery Upstairs] in Upton Park Poole.I held two exhibitions there sharing the second with my husband Xavier.

Artistry is in the soul... featuring Sue Coussy I don't find it easy referring to myself as 'an artist' as I haven't been to art school or college. However, I have been lucky enough over the past years to sell my paintings and have immense pleasure every time someone likes my art enough to buy it.

I did have a go at sending my painting 'Waiting Game' to the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy but was not accepted, but it was worth a try and I later sold it to a friend for her husband.

I don't really have a style, usually painting what takes my fancy. My main medium is acrylic as it is very versatile and forgiving. I like mixing it with sculpting mediums and glazes. Also to make a picture more interesting salt, sand and egg shell.

We moved last year and am lucky to have a small studio in the garden my husband built for me although due to over a year of ill health haven't been able to get back into the swing of things yet.

Brendan Cole is a professional dancer on one of Britain’s biggest television entertainment shows, Strictly Come Dancing. The 13th series of the successful show took place in 2015, where Brendan was partnered with television presenter Kirsty Gallacher. He has been a part of the show since its inception, winning the very first series in 2004 and since has become a national success within the dancing world, as dancer, producer and entertainer.

bump into each other! There are 22 of us on stage, which is a lot. We have pyrotechnics too, which is also a risk, but a fantastic spectacle for the audience. So the 'Lighthouse' works well for the Poole audience, as we have to work harder on the small stage to get the show perfect!

Brendan Cole’s entertaining dance, music and chat show ‘Brendan Cole – A Night to Remember’ was a success in the winter of 2015 and was back to wow audiences this year! We caught up with Brendan before his spectacular show at 'Lighthouse' in Poole to find out more...

For those who haven’t seen the show, I would describe it as a ‘night of everything’. It’s everything we do on Strictly – plus a little bit more. There are a lot of ballroom numbers, a lot of Latin numbers, the Argentine Tango, fantastic pyrotechnics, 22 phenomenal dancers, some amazing musicians – there is something for everyone!

We loved the show last year Brendan, and looking forward to this year’s! First of all, we must ask the ultimate question – Why did you choose dance?

Because my mother made me do it! But seriously, I played all sports as a kid: rugby, football and cricket especially. Some you play a season and go back to them, and some you don’t, but with dance there IS no season, It’s continuous. So I never stopped!

You return to Lighthouse in Poole for the ‘A Night to Remember’ tour in Feb. It’s a very small stage. Do you have to change the choreography for this reason?

It is a small stage, but you don’t have to necessarily change the choreography, you just have to be very clever! It actually makes us work harder, as you have to be spot on it – making sure you don’t

Can you tell us anything about what we can expect to see in the show?

The tour is jam-packed with not many days off! Do you enjoy the hectic schedule?

I do – we can’t typically complete a show in Manchester and then travel all the way down to Poole the next day. It just wouldn’t be practical. It makes sense to schedule trips according to logistics and time – so maybe Brighton one night, then Poole, then Torquay the next. From experience, it’s very important have at least two days off at a time. Dancers, performers, even musicians really run the risk of injury if they overdo it. We don’t want a dancer to be injured and then unable to continue on the tour! Also family time is very important – Strictly takes over our lives, so it’s great to spend some quality time with our families on the days off during the tour.

DANCING ON THE STARS Interview - Alix King

Have you ever had time to explore the south coast?

We don’t have much time to explore during the tour, as we are not in each place for long, but personally I have explored the South coast a lot. Bournemouth is famed for its dance competitions, which I competed in every year. I used to spend a whole week down here when competing, so know and love it! I’ve toured to Poole five times now, so know Lighthouse very well – last year we were told to go and visit an old pub on the quay - I think it was the Poole Arms - so all 22 of us went down there and descended on the pub! A couple of ales and some great food and we were very happy!

Let’s talk Strictly. -You won the first series of Strictly and came third in Series 6 with Lisa Snowdon. Do you still get competitive, or see the show more as a fun experience?

I don’t see any point in getting competitive. You are very much governed by the partner that you are given, there is no choice in the matter – you are given certain dances each week, and are told what your costumes are going to be. SO all those elements, apart from your choreography, how you perform and what you say on air is very much governed, so there is not much point in being fiercely competitive, as you will end up being disappointed! I do, however, want to be the best choreographer and the best teacher for my partner. In that way I am competitive!

You are known for controversially clashing with judges and arguing with their opinions. Is it all to make good TV or are you really frustrated with what they have to say?

It’s a little bit of both! It’s an entertainment show, I’m there to entertain – I don’t want to just be there making up the numbers. I’m not there to just dance nicely and stand in the background smiling sweetly though – if there’s something I don’t agree with then I am definitely

going to voice my opinion! I have now had enough experience in terms of exactly what we are meant to be doing on the show and what ballroom dancing is. I have also been on the other side (Brendan was a judge on News Zealand’s Dancing With The Stars) so understand that all the judges have their own agenda too! And who wouldn’t be tempted to argue with Craig RevellHorwood?

Are you sad to have left the show so early in the competition this year? Kirsty tried so hard!

Yes I am sad, but as people won’t realise, as a professional if your time is not taken up with Strictly, you have many other commitments! The week after I was out, I started training for the Children in Need special, which was very demanding. Then after that, was straight into training for the Christmas special, which was a great experience but also very demanding. That, teamed with rehearsals for the pro dances which take you all the way up to the final, means it’s a very busy time indeed if you are voted out quite early!

You’re now happily married with a little girl, Aurelia. Has all this changed your outlook on life, and does it have any effect on your dancing career?

It has definitely had an effect on my career, as everything is now devoted to making a life for her, so all your decisions, in your professional and personal life are affected by this one little person. In the future I would like for her to have the best schooling, for example, which means I am going to have work harder for my family! This means that I will definitely be dancing and touring for a long time in the future… there’s no doubt about that!

Kathryn Thomas invites you to contemplate...

Kathryn has chosen to title her new exhibition, ‘Contemplation – what do you think you can see' a tidy link between the thoughts stirred in her by a recent visit to Cuba and those she hopes her paintings conjure in her viewers. For 30 years, Kathryn has been producing highly emotive oil paintings which have ranged in their intensity from thunderously dramatic to quietly soft, the only constant being her refusal to tell the viewer what she wishes them to see.

This theme continues through the upcoming exhibition, which we can see developing already, having snuck in to her Studio near Poole Quay.

DN: So this exhibition is called 'Contemplation' but why the question, 'what do you think you can see?'

you do have to be prepared for honesty! But as my paintings hopefully evoke positive feelings it was a bit of a surprise that someone saw a devil with horns but the winner has to be an ultrasound of a rabbit embryo.

Both paintings sold so I don't know if this is something I should try and include in future paintings!

Kathryn paints and exhibits in the Studio, West Quay House, part of the Arthur Bray Yard on the waterfront between the old Poole Lifting Bridge and the Twin Sails Bridge. She's been in her studio here for 5 years and feels totally at home having relocated from the busy Spike Island studios complex in Bristol. "I love painting in my studio - I have a view over the yard towards the waterfront so I appreciate the stunning sunsets we're seeing at the moment. It's particularly helpful when I'm struggling to resolve an area of a painting that's not working. It's amazing the number of times I look out of the window and see the answer - right there.

My work has always been eclectic, and this exhibition takes the best bits from Cuba along with the inspiration I get right here on our Dorset doorstep".

KT: Hmm, It's not meant to be clever or arty, just a bit playful actually, acknowledging the number of visitors who when they share with me what they can see in my paintings, tell me they can see animals, in particular horses and also ballerinas & dancers.

From what we can see of the twenty or so works in progress, some are more suggestive than others but her aim is that viewers immerse themselves into the painting, spending time contemplating and finally allow themselves to express their vision.

And are they right in what that vision is?

DN: Ok, so what's the most surprising thing that has been seen in your paintings?

KT: Well, of course they are – all of them

Interview - Danny Nash Creation - Mr & Mrs Barnes Having seen this incredible picture above on social media, I decided I needed to know more, so I went in search of the artistic gang who decided to have a go at this incredible artwork, we speak to quirky or should that be 'qwerty' husband and wife team, Darren and Tammie Barnes about this incredible creation.

The idea came to make a mosaic using keyboard keys, as they were an everyday item but not one that was used often in an artistic context. After a lot of searching, arkadia magazine a picture of Mabel our daughter

was settled upon as it was an image which would be universally recognisable and also had a nice expression on the face on the original, and would lead to a representation of a soft, rounded form using square key pixels.

The original idea was to find 8 shades of keyboard keys, and an edited version of the image was made in Photoshop to suit these key shades, but as soon as we started searching in the real world it was apparent that finding precise shades wasn’t an option, so instead

we changed tack, and collected as many keyboards of different colours as possible - buying them in boxes of broken keyboards from eBay, removing the keys and grouping them together, eventually ending up with 22 different grades of key, with thousands of keys, and we settled on an image size of 70 x 55 tiles.

Matching the keys to the image was done by a programme written in Processing - the programme takes in the original monochrome image (with many levels of grey) as well as a list of the available key

colours and amounts. It then finds the best matches for each tone of pixel from this information.

Once complete, the programme then generates a reconstructed image using the key colours, and a grid of numbers which represent the keys for each column.

The keys were then fixed to the wooden ‘canvas’ one column at a time, a process which was time consuming, but rewarding as the image appeared column-bycolumn over a period of several days arkadia magazine

Raw talent

The tale of the taking...

We love spotting new talent, so we grabbed hold of this young lady 'Donna Challinor, for a chat into what has been driving her latest work, and how she goes about her craft:, Growing up in Dorset I have been very lucky enough to witness and visit beautiful locations. I have always seen beauty in our coastline and towns, and always thought 'that would be a lovely photo'.

So around a year and a half ago I bought my first camera to see if I could maybe capture what my eyes and mind saw, I have never looked back! I love photography, mainly landscape, I do find that I not only end up with an image of what I saw but looking back at the shots I've taken, I've found that I have captured what I felt at that particular location. Dorset is a beautiful backdrop to any image.

I am self-taught, because courses I have looked into have been during my working hours, and I have found getting out there with my camera has resulted in a huge learning curve for me, as I’ve found I picked up on mistakes, and also my achievements, constantly learning my tools and my skill set.

I have recently put some of my work on various social media websites and pages and have been overwhelmed by the response, it's a great feeling when your photos are liked by people who share the love for this area and also by people wanting to visit. I have been very lucky to come across some great photographers locally that have given me advice along the way too. There's a lovely sense of community spirit in Dorset.

It's not all about just that one shot to me, it's about taking time to breathe in the air around you or take in the beautiful afterglow after sunset over Poole bay‌ Chilling for a moment, at one with nature and its surroundings.

There is nothing better. I grew up on Portland and am now living in Poole, every day I appreciate the area

surrounding us and can't wait to get out there after work and capture new moments in time.

I feel privileged to live in such a stunning county, and will never tire of visiting the same places as much as I can't wait to explore and find new places with my camera.

Arkadia have been a huge support to me and my photography at the beginning of my venture. For that I am truly thankful.

Photography: What it means to me. (Words and images - Sarah Broome.)

When I was asked to write about my photography by the lovely Danny Nash for this magazine, I was thrilled. Then it dawned on me that I would have to write about myself! What does one write without sounding like they're blowing they're own trumpet! So I asked myself the question: What does Photography mean to me? I first picked up a camera at the age of 5 whilst my family and I were living in Australia, I can still remember the occasion: it was a beautiful evening and my Mum, Dad and I were on the balcony of our top floor apartment watching the sunset.

Dad was a keen photographer and was taking photos, he handed the camera to me to have a go. Fast forward to 40 years on and my love for photography has grown. The seed had been sown.

Photography allows me to escape into my own world from everyday stresses, at the risk of sounding corny, it is and has been my saviour. Even when I was unable to use my right arm after a nasty accident I still made use of the camera on my phone. Those were dark days for me but photography helped. It let me escape the pain mentally. In fact those images were used for my final participation in Dorset Art Weeks.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a professional, far from it; I prefer “enthusiastic amateur”, enthusiastic being the operative word! I don’t tend to plan trips for days or even weeks prior to going out with a camera. I like to be spontaneous.

I don’t use clever apps to determine where the sun might rise or set. I do, however, try to get different view points so can often be seen on my hands and knees with my bum in the air. As one fellow photographer friend said once, the classic Sarah Broome position!

As for my “style”, should a photographer have just one style?

I like to experiment, be creative, sometimes different. I adore black & white images, they have so much depth if done well. The drama in a black & white image can be amazing. It will always be my first choice when editing my images after a shoot. Maybe that’s the influence of the great Ansel Adams on me.

The grittiness, the truth, and the rawness; that, for me, is what photography is about.

Wanderlust Mention ‘Wanderlust’ to most, and eyes reach up to the ceiling, to dreamlike thoughts of bohemian travel and wistful spirits. Its term has also been quietly linked to an unsettled mind and restless nature. Dorset’s Street and Documentary Photographer Jodie House agrees, for her, its both.

“I have had wanderlust since I can remember. I used to be glued to 1970’s TV travel show ‘Wish You Were Here’ where Judith Chalmers brought me images of the world through our black and white telly in my home in deepest Dorset. I would dream of leaving.

I also took a lot photographs. I was lucky that my grandma was a compulsive photographer. Each visit we eat custard creams in her Dorchester home and thumb through her albums of travels, the war and family faces. I was always excited to watch her send rolls of 35mm film off to TruePrint.

This compulsion to photograph was in the genes and Jodie, a self-taught photographer, is now a committed social and street photographer. On a shoestring budget, manages to arrive in corners of the world quietly observing and capturing single image stories.

“I am drawn to narrative. Whether its between people and their places, or colours or even as simple as how light hits a building. I want to tell stories, often of people and places that are misrepresented or marginalised in society. I value truths, and feel that my genre of photography celebrates the world in that way. Dorset is my home and is safe. I am so lucky to live here. Every now and again I need to give my restless mind a nod and take myself away. It’s like a retreat for my ADHD. Wanderlust just sounds much prettier!”

Jodie’s images have documented lives in NYC, The Bronx, Las Vegas, many European cities – most recently Budapest, and Britain’s seaside towns, from Weymouth to Liverpool. Her next adventure is a road trip to California in March 2016.

Multi Layered, Multi Talented.

We chat with Stephen Yates.

On social media, it says about me that “I enjoy lying down on the tops of mountains”… Usually because I have either walked or ran up them first! This deep passion of mine, leads to participation in journeys across both land and water and I see it as part of the ‘human condition’. The perspective of the landscape is greatly altered by walking up local hilltops, many occupied by ancient ancestors. West Dorset has more than its fair share of outcrops and coastal cliffs along the Jurassic Coast.

I have lived in West Dorset for over thirty years now and never cease to be amazed at its simple stunning beauty. My recent move earlier this year to live by the Sea on Portland, has impacted greatly on both my artwork and photography.

The ‘Interrogating Landscapes Project’ organised through Dorset Visual Arts is now in its third year and my artwork has changed and evolved throughout this time. This way of working collaboratively with other Artists in the same location, has made me investigate different approaches and see different avenues of exploration, hopefully creating a ‘sense of place’. My Artwork expresses the concept of a different period and time in History too, watercolours and acrylics painted in diffused light conditions at night… exploring the spiritual nature of this area of outstanding natural beauty.

The effect is to try and create a depth and understanding of the ancient Wessex Way, and to try and form a sense of belonging to that place. My many outcomes in acrylics have all been as a result of a walk through this landscape, much like the Cerne Abbas Giant is walking along the hillside in Dorset. I recently embarked on a new project called ‘The Great Stare’, based around Milton Abbey and is a restoration and reconstruction of Capability Brown’s Beautiful Landscape and interested in the age and archeology of this unique Dorset landscape and the impact on the natural environment in the last five hundred years of habitation.

I finally now have the opportunity to spend most of my time being ‘creative’, following a long and fascinating teaching career in Art, Design and Technology. Ever since my early days growing up in a visually vibrant industrial part of West Yorkshire I have been in ‘awe’ of other artists such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, who both lived a ‘stones throw’ away. I still have vivid memories of the whole class staring at me as my Head teacher came into the old school room carrying some red and pink roses he had grown in his own garden, and a box of new Oil Pastels! I have always felt from an early age that I had a ‘gift’. Recently my artwork is influenced by both John Piper and Peter Lanyon, who use ‘layering’ as a technique in their style of painting.

I look at the world through my images, artwork and photography, carefully creating a record or map out my early thoughts in sketchbooks and use photography as a way of sketching too. Larger scale work is executed in watercolours, and acrylics and reflects my journey and emotions.

Interrogating this landscape near my new home on Portland, is already leading to much larger work.

Spacemen and wooden castles

This man has it all, a lot of charm, gracious enigma and buckets of talent, so we'd thought it best to get him to come and play at our party at Badbury Rings on the 28th May - here is just a little insight into what you can expect from this lyrical, life loving, 'alien' expecting singer song writer...

"I was born in Brighton, in old Albion before moving here to the West Country many a moon ago. My dad is from the north, my mum is from the south, and I have lived both east and west. There is Gypsy in our blood so it is little surprise.

Most early memories involve music, so my inspiration began with my parent’s old record collection, of which I delved into with a huge rush of inner magic; it felt like home. I do however believe that magic is there in all children, and there is nothing better than the arts to nurture rather than condition it, so I feel it was a natural calling complimented with earthly things.

When I was a child, strangers used to give me gifts. This made me curious of others compassion and kindness, which IS music to me. Then I realised when I got older how beautiful my mum was and still is, so I feel that attention may not have been all for me! However, much was genuine and it made me think deeply as a nipper.

My best friend of 5 at the time knew I loved the Scalextric he got that Christmas, so when he and his parents went away for a weekend, he asked them if I could have the Scalextric to play with until he returned. Oh, the hearts of children. I saw past the grubby mouth and snotty nose; I still do..

These memories inspire me and I put those into my art, with spaceships thrown in, because they are truth to me, like my father coaching my childhood football team: The laughter and the giggles, which was mostly aimed just at my legs. Memories of my mother going out to buy me a wooden castle. She had already bought me some Knights in armour of which I thought were spacemen. We had little money but much love, so it was important to me. I tried to go to sleep while she was at the toy shop so the time would go by quicker. I am much the same now, when I have a new guitar arriving, or particularly a glass of wine. I still have that castle, and I still have those hopes.

I paint too, which has been described as 'outsider' or visionary art. I've also written two books: same expressions, different mediums; it keeps a monkey mind like myself from becoming bored."

Artsreach is springing up all across Dorset!

Hot off the press and available now, Artsreach’s new spring programme is packed with around 70 professional performances set to take place in village halls right across Dorset between now and Easter…

Also, Artsreach Director Ian Scott retired at Christmas after 25 years as director of the county’s popular and successful rural arts programme. Stepping in to his shoes is Caroline Corfe, who took up the position on 1st January. “It’s my dream job,” she says. “I am so pleased to be coming back to Dorset. I love the landscape and the heritage. I love to walk and paint. I have so many friends here. It feels like coming home.”

For music lovers, a real medley of styles and genres is on offer this spring. Featuring Mabon’s Jamie Smith and Oliver Wilson-Dickson, Welsh folk trio Alaw draw upon their wealth of experience for a true musical journey, while Tom ‘Spats’ Langham and Hot Fingers explore the origin of acoustic blues, joined by talented vocalist Emily Campbell, returning following their five-night sell out Dorset tour in 2013. The partnership between Artsreach and The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra continues, with a serenade concert by The Resonate Strings and the contemporary ensemble Kokoro performing works inspired by Purcell, and Messiaen’s extraordinary ‘Quartet for the End of Time’. Folk duo Ninebarrow and gypsy-swing band Moscow Drug Club continue their tours following high demand in the autumn, whilst extraordinary clarinetist Susi Evans and the London Klezmer Quartet give one special concert in January.

will deliver an evening of American country inspired tunes and sizzling London-based Latin jazz band Heads South make their Artsreach debut. We are excited also to be welcoming Zulu Tradition to the County, with a heady mix of African harmonies, athletic dance, drums and colourful costumes that’s sure to be a real highlight of the season.

We are sure there will be several onstage highlights this season too, with much-loved Artsreach performers returning to the circuit. Forest Forge give a final performance of their magical family show ‘Hansel & Gretel’, whilst Cornish star Dave Mynne dons his cape once more for a skillful one-man adaptation of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ – expect to be thrilled and seduced!

Dorset’s Tim Laycock and Colin Thompson present a dramatic and musical celebration of the life of William Barnes in ‘The Year Clock’, while acclaimed company Farnham Maltings offer two theatrical treats this season; based on the hit film the company use their inimitable style to present the magic of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ then, later in the season, return with ‘The Iranian Feast’, their hugely popular play with food, song and dance from the heart of Persia.

As well as the fantastic family show by Forest Forge, Artsreach have three delightful shows for children aged 4+ touring during the February half-term. The UK’s top puppet company PuppetCraft are back with the mischievous super-hero ‘Monkey’, their show inspired by the great Chinese story. Then Angel Heart & Rattlebox continue their Nordic adventure with ‘Freya

– A Viking Saga’; expect dunderheaded giants and boisterous gods. Both shows have associated workshops but with limited places so do enquire when booking.

Lastly, in a show packed with beautiful puppets, illusion and amazing experiments, Light Theatre present the tale of Jack and ‘The Magic Beanstalk’.

The wonderfully agile and acrobatic string quartet Bowjangles bring ‘On the Box’ to four venues early in the season; expect the usual mix of exhilarating dance routines, rousing songs and exceptional musicianship!

Storyteller Malcolm Green shares stories of his time on an uninhabited Icelandic island, accompanied by extraordinary musician and entertainer Tim Dalling in Shearwater. The duo of deception Morgan & West bring another brilliant show packed with jaw-dropping, brain bursting feats of magic in ‘Parlour Tricks’. Expect love, loss, drama, humour and twists in ‘The Forbidden Door’, a brand-new show by the musicians and storyteller of The Devil’s Violin.

Blurring the boundaries of dance, acrobatics, theatre and circus, Joli Vyann present an energetic and thought-provoking show exploring our dependence on technology. Expect a visually stunning and exciting performance from this emerging South West company.

Fish and Ships 2016

Portland Marina will host its third Fish & Ships Festival at Osprey Quay this April, celebrating all that is good about Dorset, on, off and below the sea. Great food and drink from Dorset’s finest and an opportunity to see what goes on down at the marina, as they throw open their doors to the public over this weekend of food, fun, watersports and live music.

The ‘Ships’ element will have new and used boats for sale, run by Cove Yacht Brokerage and Winner Yachts, watersports demos, including paddle boarding (OTC) and gig rowing (Portland GIGs), trips out on the water with Quality Time and Finns Up, all things chandlery with Apollo Marine and Skin Deep explaining the allure of diving in these crystal clear waters. There will also be some very special historic boats to look over, ranging from WWII Harbour Defence Launch to Training Ships, if we’re lucky.

Other local companies, such as Andrew Simpson Sailing Academy, the RNLI and Coastwatch are all involved in encouraging youngsters to take to the sea, or indeed to train/ re-train and work in the Marine Industry. IPACA will display bass boats that the youngsters build with Sunseeker, also based at Osprey Quay.

Dorset is a food rich county and you will be able to enjoy food samples and demos from the Crab House, as Nigel Bloxham shows us twenty ways with an oyster, plus fresh fish, game & shellfish distributors, local farmers, cider makers, artisan

bakers, chocolate artists and fresh baked pizza from wood fired ovens – the list is long - come hungry and go home happy. Start with a Dorset Coffee and finish with a Dark Matters brownie.

The newly opened waterfront bar The Boat that Rocks will be providing quality themed hot food over the weekend and run a programme of live music. Community radio station AirFM will be bringing their road show on Saturday and Sunday, with competitions and fun for all the family, from crab catching, to Rove exploration with SALT. There will be live music on Saturday evening from local band Shooter and we’re hoping for a re-visit from Weymouth Yukelalians on the Sunday, with a special guest appearance of the New Forest Morgan and Harley Davidson associations – they look fabulous along the waterfront.

Dorset’s brightest Colour Run is back!!!

Weldmar have now launched their annual Colour Run and have made it even bigger for 2016. After the amazing success of Dorset’s first Colour Run in 2015, organisers have been working hard to ensure that this year’s event is bigger and better.

In 2015, over 1,000 people of all ages took part in this colourful family event, which was the first of its kind in Dorset. Over £60,000 was raised from the event with positive feedback contributing to the planning and expansion of the event for this year.

The theme for this year’s Festival is Midsummer Dreams, which has inspired local artist Gina Marshall and her winning image Dreamers on Swanage Beach selected for this year’s PAW brochure cover. Another talent to be celebrated is that of Grace Lovelass, a budding opera singer who has won a John Flower bursary award presented by PAW. The bursary will help Grace develop her training and hoped for professional career. PAW bursaries are available to help artists in all disciplines take the next step in developing their talents.

At the heart of the PAW Festival, Rollington Barn near Corfe Castle hosts an exhibition displaying the works of all the PAW artists and local schools that have been involved in PAW supported workshops. Throughout Purbeck, the Festival’s many participating artists enthusiastically open their studios and galleries, showcasing to visitors their latest creations and many providing live demonstrations.

Marking the start of the PAW Festival in the seaside town of Swanage, local schools and community groups unveil their outdoor ‘Swirls of Fish’ art installation for people to enjoy. The PAW community project ‘Dream Flags’ created by a collaboration groups and schools will be on display throughout Purbeck. Inspired by the Tibetan prayer flags, festive displays of colourful bunting with participant’s hopes, dreams and wishes can be admired.

Right-Sizing We hear much about upsizing and down-sizing in the property market, but now especially, it’s time to ‘rightsize’ – to live in the space that suits you best.

Today, it’s not sensible to rattle around in a huge family house after the children have left home. Down-sizing provides the opportunity to move into higher spec accommodation and even the opportunity to

purchase a bolthole in the sun.

Up-sizing is another matter.

Co-habitation and starting a family often requires more space and now, with interest rate low, it’s a great time to upsize. The market is active and filled with great opportunities, although caution and good representation is needed. It is no secret that successful people become successful because they obtain the best advice. This certainly applies to those buying and selling

property. A good local estate agent, who knows the market, is the key.

Seminars for Landowners and Developers DOMVS has joined forces with Morgan Carey Architects, Chapman Lily Planning and Close Brothers Property Finance to arrange two major breakfast seminars. The first, on Friday 1st April at Kingston Maurward College near Dorchester, will explain development opportunities for local landowners.

On Friday, 26th February we’ve organised a special charity event with proceeds going to Dorset Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes.

The Antiques Roadshow presenter Paul Atterbury will be offering valuations between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm at The Keep Military Museum, Dorchester.

There’s no need to book, just come along, make your donation (min. £5.00 per item), and have your collectables valued.

Throughout 2015, we monitored the growing interest from buyers around the UK wanting to move to Dorset. The highest demand was from London and the Home Counties. To satisfy demand we have arranged another of our ‘London Property Showcase Days’.

Design Your Own Unique Bug House

We’ve joined forces with Dorset Wildlife Trust and Silverlake, the sustainable holiday home development at Warmwell nr Dorchester, to promote a competition to design your own bug house.

Anyone can enter. The top three will have their bug house built by experts and presented to them. The overall winning design will also be adopted by Silverlake and used around the development.

Imaginations Run Wild for Story House

DOMVS is delighted to announce the start of its new children’s writing competition, Story House. We’ve teamed up with the Dorchester Literary Festival to encourage budding young writers at many of Dorchester’s primary and middle schools. The theme is ‘A Dorset Story’. The judges include author Julian Fellowes and children’s author David Solomons. The winners will be announced in May.
