After seeing this lady doing her thing at events all over Dorset, we decided it was time to chat 'fashion' future and all things Sammy Baxter related. We hook up in Café Rouge and start talking shop. It's clear from the off that Sammy is a perfectionist; she double-checks my pad and my phone goes off. 'You're not going to answer that, are you?' she says with a cheeky grin... I didn't answer the call... So to business! What is it you want to see in a magazine personally? – Good shots, high-end fashion, great detail and enough words to satisfy my curiosity. In Bournemouth it's all a bit naff; a glorified Marbella feel. We need real magazines like Arkadia to show what, and how, we actually look at life. How long have you been doing the fashion shoots? Four years – a small time in regard to some of the other competitors, but four good, solid years of shooting in London, which is where my normal marketplace sits. The 'word of mouth' is incredible there, and with Facebook and quality makeup artists, I never really look at advertising locally. So what was working life like before photography came along? I worked in Spain, running boat parties in Puerto Banus, placing my art in a few galleries. I was out there for four years and I made some good friends. It’s just too hot, and year on year you miss normality, good connections, even better coffee! Did you always have an interest in photography? Last year in Spain I helped a photographer friend shoot a wedding – the results from my work were used and I was hooked. So I'm guessing you’re self-taught? You received no lessons or went to any classes? Not a sausage! I think, with an eye for it and passion to learn more, and the abundance of videos and tutorials on-line, you can achieve what you want to if you're hungry enough! Do you get a kick from turning up on a shoot with new clients peering over your shoulder? Does this add extra pressure to get the shot? I love it! From the train ride to London, finding the studio, nerves building, it's a great release. I know I'm going to get the shot and I enjoy having the client there; it takes all of the hassle of explaining and devising a set. They think they know what they want. Then you run them through it and you can build a relationship quickly and 'gel' with the client. They then get what they actually, really need! Do you use Photoshop on your work? Yes of course (laughing hysterically), all good fashion photographers do. I actually outsource this to a few Polish specialists; they're very reasonably priced and they’re brilliant at what they do. This does surprise people, but it is the norm in our industry if you're a one man band. So, with the 'Big Smoke' as your back garden, does the sprawling metropolis hold a special place in your heart? As a base, Bournemouth holds my heart. London is great and the real business for me is there. I love the vibe, the bars, the culture, but living five minutes from the beach and having good friends is what keeps me here. What does the future hold for you Sammy? Oh I don't frikking know... Who has a crystal ball? If I am honest, I'd like to stick to my spiritual beliefs. If there is something I want, I usually chase hard until I get it. I've done editorial pieces, now I want front covers and billboards. I want the unusual fashion house designers to see what I can achieve with my photography – the designer brands are the dream shoots. This is the aim over the next five years!

Suzanne Welch is an artist who passionately believes that good art does not need grandiose explanations. “Art should be able to speak for itself and not have to be interpreted with hyperbole for the viewer to understand. Joyful art is what I hope to achieve with my work, just beautiful and reflective pictures for people to own and enjoy.” Nature is the main influence in Suzanne's paintings, as she seeks to capture the light, colour and dynamism of nature within her work. “I like to paint outside whenever
possible, preferably in bare feet, as I love to be inspired by nature's energy, and with some good jazz or blues playing through my headphones, as music has a strong influence on my work,” she explains. Suzanne admits that she can’t sit still while she paints, as movement is integral to her art. “I
try to capture the spontaneity of nature and movement in my work, whilst at the same time also imposing some control on the overall picture. This means I move about a lot while I work. I’ll walk around the painting many, many times and even dance if the mood so takes me. This contributes to the movement and feeling in my art. Thankfully, the neighbours aren’t too close and so they can’t see the mad woman in her back garden, though the cat often wonders what on earth I’m up to!” Suzanne’s family hails from Dorset and Wiltshire and her grandmother, Ruth Gough, was one of the ‘paintresses’ at Poole Pottery during the 1920s and 30s – the ‘Carter, Stabler, Adams’ era. Suzanne studied Fine Art and went on to graduate from the University of Cambridge. She was born in Malta and spent her formative years there. She believes the heat of the Mediterranean still influences her work in subtle ways. arkadia magazine
“The clarity of light and the colour of hotter parts of the globe definitely reappear in my work, as I believe the environments we live in create echoes – ghosts if you like – within our souls, that reoccur when we least expect it.” Suzanne's paintings featured in the United Artists Exhibition which took place in The Cork Street Gallery last year. In each edition we like to find 'unknown' local talent to showcase to our readers. It was whilst on Facebook that we came across some stunning images by Dave Newman, a chap with a certain something when it comes to landscape and scenery shots. You can see one of Dave’s images illustrating our feature on the Anthony Gormley statue. We asked Dave to tell us in his own words, what inspires him to pick up a camera for his own personal enjoyment, how he has created his own style and what the future holds... "It was a visit to Las Vegas and stumbling across a landscape gallery by Peter Lik five years ago that first piqued my interest in photography. I liked the idea of recording snapshots in time for others to see in the future. So, armed with a secondhand DSLR, which I still use to this day, I set out to do just that. Hours of perseverance, internet searches and lots of trial and error later, I discovered a style that works for me and a project close to home.
So, for the last three years I have been travelling around my beautiful home county to try and complete a book called Dorset A-Z. The style I have adopted is something called Single-File High Dynamic Range (HDR). This allows me to show the full range of an image to the viewer. To some photography purists this style is classed as cheating, or even crass. I do not believe this to be the case at all. I see it is another type of art. I can’t paint, so for me this is a way to express myself artistically. It seems to have been successful as I have been published worldwide over the last few years. Photography has been a hobby that gives me immense pleasure and it allows me to escape from the pressures of life. I am currently on a career break due to redundancy and am determined to finish the book I started. If only I could find somewhere in Dorset that starts with the letter X."

To specialise in a sector, then find your passion actually lies elsewhere, and then show a greater level of passion for your new life, is something we see a lot in Dorset businessmen and women, and no more so than here. Former 'Getty' advertising and marketing man, Gavin Griggs has realised his dream, setting his heart on Dorset as a destination, and hospitality as a heartfelt desire. We are welcomed into his kingdom like old school friends; the passion is clear, the mood is chilled, and the decor sophisticated. This clever chap and his talented interior decorator wife have made something special here on the A30 in North Dorset. The bottom line is the service and the quality when you choose a night out, and The Ship Inn does not disappoint, with a menu that has something for everyone.
We start our three-course meal with beautifully seared Lyme Bay scallops, parsnip and ginger purÊe, pomegranate molasses and parsnip crisps. We move on to a Chargrilled Saag Paneer on pumpkin rosti, tamarind glaze, coconut cream and dressed garden salad – gently balanced flavours and the crisp rosti done to perfection. We then bow our heads to the temptress that is chocolate... Millionaire's shortbread cheesecake, rounded nicely with soft vanilla bean ice cream. The level of the chef's talent is something unexpected here; we feel like we're dining in a top-end site and yet we're paying 'pub grub' prices. The 'Inn' side to the business is clean, pastel shades and solid modern touches blend in synergy with the original features, and comfort to a level you just don't expect in a country pub

If you have thoughts of a day trip out, or even a night away from the hum-drum of the nine to five in one of the wonderful bedrooms, accompanied by en suite luxury, beautiful views and 'real ales' (this is a free house) then look no further. Between the laid back boss, the fabulous chef, the lovely, warm and welcoming staff and the feel of real local value and service, I have to admit, this is one place that really has me feeling good about Dorset. The journey from home brewer to owning his own five barrel brewery, Eight Arch Brewing Co, in Wimborne took Steve Farrell several years. Although only in his late twenties at the time, Steve had a passion for beer, especially the newer style brews out of parts of North America and London. Matt Davey, chef and now enthusiastic owner of Doodlebug, is a street food catering service based from his lovingly restored Citroen H van. Previously working in the heat of high end restaurant kitchens, Matt has finally ventured out on his own. Together, Steve and Matt make the perfect partnership to create the ideal way to start your weekend Like Matt, Steve is from Wimborne, has a young family and married a Wimborne girl, so he was determined to locate his brewery in the town. In doing so, he has become the first commercial brewer in Wimborne for almost eighty years. Eight Arch Brewing Co. commenced brewing in January 2015. The name Eight Arch is inspired by local landmark Julian’s Bridge, with its eight arches and the arch theme continues with Bowstring Bitter and Parabolic Pale, using styles of arches for their branding. Steve does everything himself, from devising recipes to brewing and delivery. When he delivered a 36 pint pin to a house in Lytchett Matravers, at the request of the Conservative election candidate, for an Easter Monday barbecue he wasn’t to know that Prime Minister, David Cameron would be pictured in national newspapers the following day sampling his beer. Business has grown steadily since then with Steve having to brew more regularly to keep up with demand. Matt specialises in American style BBQ with pulled pork and hot smoked beef chuck that are all cooked over charcoal in his big green egg. He is also available for private dinner parties, canapÊs parties and cookery lessons. Alongside gallons of real ale, these guys really bring the party, and from mid-April, the Eight Arch on-site brewery tap has been open each Friday between 4pm and 8pm, enabling customers to sample beer straight from the brewery. In conjunction with Doodlebug Food, who are on site each Friday, they also offer some of the finest street food around. Eight Arch and Doodlebug have rapidly established themselves as an integral part of the Wimborne food and drink scene.

BluBambu Living focuses on reclaimed furniture from Indonesia – handcrafted pieces that embody traditional methods and modern design from surprising sources, such as reclaimed teak, Javanese fishing boats and recycled oil barrels. Upon returning to the UK in the summer of 2014, following a two-year relocation to Singapore with work, David and Gemma couldn’t resist bringing back a little slice of Indonesia’s buzzing furniture scene. Indonesia had soon become a second home for the couple – all too easy to slip into the idyllic lifestyle where sun, surf, a buzzing culture and friendly smiles make you all too welcome. No longer drawn by just the sandy beaches, but the discovery of this rustic, exciting and inspiring furniture scene. It is a humble, eco-friendly approach that creates these unique pieces – forward thinking and intuitive in giving a new life to these reclaimed materials. Being in the fortunate position of living a few hours’ flight away from Java and Bali, David and Gemma spent 15 months discovering and building relationships with a range of artisans across the two islands. Every trip was spent seeking out those talented individuals who were so imaginative and resourceful in their approach to creating modern furniture with a reclaimed twist. Whether it was transforming an old oil drum into a funky outdoor seat, using old bicycle parts to create a life-size horse sculpture, or a stunning reclaimed teak root, everything had its use.
Back in the UK, the couple set about creating a showroom that would inspire and recreate the excitement they had experienced whilst exploring off the beaten track. The discovery of an old dairy barn at Sadler’s Farm in Lymington was the perfect venue and it wasn’t long before the couple had transformed the space to create a rustic backdrop fit for their furniture pieces. Eight months into their venture, and with a fourth container en route, things are going well. Visiting Java again in January, the couple had a new insight into what pieces worked well and what their customers were looking for. They’ve also undertaken a few bespoke briefs – working directly with artisans to create some fantastic one-off pieces, such as a 2m lamp stand made from a reclaimed Vespa! “In today’s throwaway culture, we’ve been delighted to see a desire from people to seek out one or two unique features for their home that will create a talking point,” said Dave. “People fall in love with the history of an item and none more so than with our reclaimed Boat Wood collection. The fact you can have an authentically weathered dugout canoe wine rack in your living room that once served as a fishing boat on the warm, tropical Indian Ocean is very enchanting, especially for those living so close to the coast themselves,” concludes Dave.

the art of Pyrography
We speak to Tilia Holmes, on an art form that is so beautiful we had to have a piece done for ourselves (see contents page!) I have always been fascinated by the concept of drawing, inspired by my parents who are both designer/makers. Their artistic world was constantly around me. I have directed this exposure into a personal passion for drawing. We have all grown up with an instinct to draw with pencil, however I wanted to extend my mediums by exploring pyrography, a burning technique allowing you to illustrate on wood. Using wood as a canvas opens up vast opportunities, potentially making work more practical. There is a unique beauty when pyrographing – knowing that when mistakes are made, they are irreversible. I am currently studying a Visual Communication degree involving graphics and Illustration, at Bournemouth Arts University, this has opened my mind to creative job prospects using live projects and learning new techniques. II have incorporated pyrography into a few projects, although I tend to keep it as a much-loved hobby. My passion lies in drawing, painting and pyrographing portraits and figures, although recently I have been creating more scenic pieces for sale. My inspiration comes from a variety of specialised artists, crossing over between illustration and fine art. I admire Mark Powell, with his intricate mark-making envelope drawings, and realism works of Alyssa Monks, Seth Armstrong and Ian Cumberland. These are just a few of the artists who have played a significant role in expanding my love for realism.
In my spare time, I work part-time in Dansel Gallery, in Abbotsbury, where I have learnt, first-hand, the importance of quality in work, in terms of selling it. I have been privileged enough to sell some of my own Pyrography pieces alongside other respected craftsmen’s work, as well as collecting commissions varying from pyrography drawing to typography. ROBOTIC ANGEL OF THE SOUTH The 2m-high (6ft 6in) human figure will be at Clavell Tower, Kimmeridge, for a year from May. The statue will be one of five around the UK to mark the 50th anniversary of the Landmark Trust in 2015. Historian Caroline Stanford said it will be Gormley's only solo exhibition in the UK next year and other locations were still to be announced. Ms Stanford, who is head of engagement at the Landmark Trust, said the statue would be a "wonderful" and "thoughtful" presence at Kimmeridge and said: "It is a fantastic project to be working on with one of the generation's greatest artists.” "Everyone will be able to make up their own minds. We hope they will really enjoy everything about it." Peter Wharf, Purbeck District Council's planning committee chairman, said it had divided opinion and added: "There was pleasure to have something so potentially attractive to tourists coming into town, but there was also concern about the potential for destabilising the cliff." The artwork was approved by the council's planning committee on condition the foundations were dug by hand to avoid disturbing the cliff. Mr Wharf said: "A robotic Angel of the North is how one person described it." The Landmark Trust is a charity that restores at-risk buildings and lets them out for holidays. It has rescued 200 buildings in the past 50 years

It is thanks to Arkadia Mag’s Facebook page that I had the overwhelming urge to jump in my car and head down to Kimmeridge, after you guys had posted Dave Newman's stunning photo of Gormley’s statue. I never realised the statue was in Dorset, let alone close to where I live! I love finding new places to go and explore with my camera. To be at one with nature, camera in hand, is a perfect day off from my everyday job. Photography is a big part of my life and I’m lucky to have a very talented friend with whom I share a Facebook page – Platinum Coast Photography. This showcases our passion on all aspects of photography. Dan has taught me to grow in my photography, and to see just how amazing this planet can be, from nature, landscapes, astrophotography, pets and the celebrations of life. Being able to capture a moment in time which, after time, we may have forgotten is precious. Places and people change but to look back at a photograph and remember the very moment, all your sense's come alive and take you straight back to memory lane. Ataraxia. The place to be when you've had a 'pig of a day'. We arrive with the heat of the afternoon, following a sun dappled drive through the New Forest to Brockenhurst. There is a feeling of tranquillity as we pull into the driveway and the sense of ‘having arrived’ is immediate. From cyclists passing through, and business folk ‘wining and dining’ clients, to the young couple booking in for a welcome break from the growing family, the place holds a certain charm, and a feeling of calm that settles over the site As I sit watching the visitors come and go, I gently bask in the peace, letting the smell of the old books, the weave of the vintage rugs, mixed into the warm aromas of the kitchen, wash over me. Seated in the well-worn lounge chair, I ponder on what it is that makes The Pig, Brockenhurst come alive. The vibe is eclectic, mixed in with the strength of the old building and the new comfy surroundings, the interesting and homely muted colours – all a bit shabby chic – evolving, rather than stuck in a solitary vision. There’s a gentle hustle and bustle from the waiting staff, a wave of fresh energy, and a feeling of somewhat expectant excitement from the full conservatory. Hungry residents fill the place with noise, and a happy family on holiday run around the gardens, making daisy chains for their young boy. The place has become more than just a local hotel. Its '25 Mile Menu’ has always been locally sourced and the servers in their denim and white pumps (now the standard dress in chic eateries) offer an escape from the ‘showiness’ you’d expect anywhere else in this part of town. The dress code is straight from the beach, or the office, and I now think this place is regarded in two different ways – one crowd, who’ve never been, see it as ‘posh grub’ and another crowd now see it as a regular night out for pizza with the kids.

I think, for those that haven’t experienced one of The Pig’s Dorset sites, trust me – lose that feeling of wonder and mystery, it will be dispelled in minutes of your arrival, leaving you only with a healthy home grown, locally sourced and very relaxed meal with your gang… and maybe a cocktail at the bar.

Time to Reflect Two years, too many late nights... Too many great new friends to mention. Often in life, you get so caught up in the everyday, that you start forgetting the fact that 'everyday' is something very special. You're alive, you interact with like-minded people, and you learn a lot in your 'everyday' – more than I think we actually realise. The talent I've come across over the last 24 months or so, working on my little magazine, just in our little county, blows my mind. Astronomical amounts of creativity pouring out onto social media 'everyday' – mind-blowing and thought-provoking art. I gave a lot of thought to writing a piece on the 'journey' of Arkadia. I am not given to romantic prose or even, for that matter, am I much of a journalist. I have some amazingly talented folk around me to do all the clever bits, I just wanted to take this chance to reflect on two cool guys I've come to know and class as pals. Kris Dutson, legendary Dorset photographer, and Simon Gudgeon, the man behind Sculptures by the Lakes – two of the finest minds I think I have met (I say think; Kris is still under observation). Both had starring roles in the second ever edition of Arkadia. This was the magazine that started to reflect more of my passion, not the art movement but the flow of clever minds through Dorset’s 'everyday'. I feel it befits the two year mark, and certainly if you haven't visited the site or had the good fortune to own a Kris Dutson image, then I implore you, make this something to fit into one of your days. I have no doubt the trip here will be worth it and a piece of Kris’s captivated landscape seen through a perfectionist’s eye will inspire. I am, as you can clearly see, in full 'ponder mode' on the island at SBTL, lost in thoughts of events, food, wonderful scenery and a peace and quiet you only get when you know you have good things ahead. I am a lucky bloke really, so thanks to all who have passed through, stayed with, or will enter my world in the foreseeable future; it's been a fabulous journey and one I am humbled by. Two Little Mockingbirds
Two Little Mockingbirds will officially open its doors on Monday 6th July but owner Lou Brown is already receiving positive feedback and lots of interest. Part of a growing community of independent retailers in the area, she said she cannot wait to welcome visitors to her shop. Brown was born and raised in Bournemouth. Following a successful career as a singersongwriter she launched Lou Brown Designs in 2011, selling personalised gifts for children and adults. Working out of The Factory Studios in Boscombe, she jumped at the chance to move into another of their properties, the shop at 779 Christchurch Road. “As a maker myself, I really wanted to find a way to support all the fantastic artisan designers whose work I really loved”, she said. With Lou Brown Designs continuing to run from the back of the shop, the remaining space is given over to an ever-changing selection of ceramics, prints, stationery and much more. Notable names such as Hannah Turner Ceramics from Bristol and Bournemouth’s own Nicholas John Frith already feature on the shelves, as well as a variety of gifts from Art House Meath in Surrey. “I cannot tell you how much I adore Art House Meath”, Brown said. “The wonderful items we sell are designed by an open studio of artists with severe learning or physical disabilities. We are hoping people will come and buy them, because the more we sell the more we can order again and in turn keep supporting this amazing social enterprise.” As well as her passion for the gifts she makes and sells, Brown cares deeply for the community around her: “I want a shop that is part of the community and that lovely people will help us to build. We are hoping that our customers will talk to us about what they would like so we can source more beautiful gifts. We also want to look at what else we can offer, maybe workshops, book clubs or even film nights!”
Brown hopes that Two Little Mockingbirds will be an alternative to most high street shops which, she thinks are “full of imported, mass-produced things. I want to know who makes the items we sell so that we can pass that knowledge and love of the item onto our customers. We believe that mundane things in the home can also be the most wonderful pieces of art that bring a smile every time you use them. We want to be different.”

Elizabeth Bairstow, daughter of the late Sir Edward Bairstow, composer organist and choirmaster, is a self-taught watercolour artist whose work is collected across the globe. Primarily, Elizabeth is a botanical artist and was a founder member of The Society of Botanical Artists. Her accolades are far reaching, but it is the shear love and passion for the Dorset countryside that is now a focal point of her work and the inspiration behind 'The Bairstow Gallery' in Poundbury in Dorchester, Dorset. Furthermore, here hosts Elizabeth’s ‘The Magic of Nature’ studio – also the title of her main book – and here visitors can share Elizabeth’s love and interaction with the countryside, and introduce you to Barton Meadows farm, the main subject matter in her painting and books. The farm was acquired in 1989, the land was a blank canvas and with passion, and an artistic eye, Elizabeth worked with local craftsmen and materials to restore the 100 acres, carefully balancing the composition of the buildings with the landscape. Barton Meadows has produced a magical backdrop and playful characters in her books and teaches all ages about the simple statements of a natural life. ‘About a Farm’ and ‘The Untidy Blackbird and other Stories’ are the first in a series of stories celebrate Elizabeth’s gentle relationship with her surroundings and subtle humour within the farm animals’ behaviour. These animals are central to the narrative and you can’t help but fall in love with Pip – the sensible Border Collie, who always knows best and in her new book ‘Lollita and the Farm Animals’ we are introduced to Lollita the sheep. Abandoned by her mother, we see her heartfelt journey through this latest magical story. The studio walls hang exquisite paintings and drawings, but it is also where you can see the organic process that makes these magical books come alive.
