In our efforts to feed families in need during these uncertain times, we have made a financial donation to help families across the state of Arkansas. Sponsored by the Rose Law Firm.
Welcome to the Arkansas Bar Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting! Thanks for joining us for our first-ever virtual conference. Executive Director Karen K. Hutchins and Meetings Director Jennifer Jones, along with the rest of the Association’s staff, have worked extra hard over the last couple of months to make this year’s conference a reality. Their determination and dedication has been inspiring. It is sure to pay off! This year’s theme is “Making a Difference: Lawyers in Service to Clients, Communities, and the Profession.” The idea came to us as we listened to President Brian Rosenthal give his inaugural address at last year’s meeting. Brian didn’t focus on himself. Rather, he used his moment in the spotlight to thank the many lawyers who inspired and encouraged him to step into his role as president. We thought it would be fitting to plan this year’s meeting around that theme. Over the course of the conference, you will get the same great CLE you have come to expect from the Association – all designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to make a difference in your chosen arena. With tracks in family law planned by Angela Mann, criminal law planned by Judge Andy Gill, business law and tax planned by Cliff McKinney and Matt Boch, and litigation, there will be plenty of substantive law sessions to choose from. There are also a number of sessions designed to hone your practice skills, and still others designed to help you effectively manage your practice. But what we are most excited about is, you will be inspired by hearing from lawyers who are indeed making a significant difference for their clients, communities, and profession around the world and around the block. We are pleased to present Judge Victoria Pratt – a true example of how one attorney can make a meaningful impact on our profession. Judge Pratt is a former Chief Judge of the Newark Municipal Court in Newark, New Jersey, and a professor at Rutgers Law School. She is a nationally-recognized expert in procedural justice and alternative sentencing. Her respectful approach to court participants has changed how the community views her court and how court players view their roles. Her TED Talk, How Judges Can Show Respect, has gone viral. It has been translated into 11 languages and received over one million views, and the Facebook clip has received an astounding 21 million views. Laura Nirider is an example of how one attorney can bring about a life-altering difference for her clients. Nirider is a lawyer and Clinical Associate Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law. She represents individuals convicted of crimes as children or teenagers after coerced confessions or improper police interrogations. Her clients have included Brendan Dassey, whose case was profiled in the Netflix Global series Making a Murderer, and Damien Echols of the West Memphis Three, whose case was profiled in the documentary West of Memphis. Kelsey Skaggs is an example of how one attorney can have a real impact on her community. Born and raised in Alaska, Skaggs has seen the impact of climate change firsthand. After graduating from Harvard Law School, she cofounded the Climate Defense Project to fill a gap in the legal landscape by providing legal representation to front-line environmental activists, developing legal strategies, and connecting attorneys with communities and campaigns. She was named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in 2018. And, we are again pleased to present three attorneys using their legal training to make significant contributions to our community and profession right here in Arkansas – Governor Asa Hutchinson with opening remarks, Chief Justice Dan Kemp with the State of the Judiciary, and Attorney General Leslie Rutledge with updates from her office. We hope the experiences of these speakers will inspire you to step up and step out to use your specialized knowledge and skills to make a meaningful difference for your clients, community, and profession. Thanks for joining us! And a special thanks to all our speakers for their openness to our new virtual platform and the extra time and effort they have put into preparing and presenting. Thanks to them and everyone who has helped make this year’s annual meeting a virtual reality! Joe & Cindy Kolb, 2020 Annual Meeting Co-Chairs
