AT ARKANSAS STATE, OUR STUDENTS PUSH THE LIMITS OF LEARNING. WE COLLABORATE WITH NASA ABOVE THE CLOUDS AND WITH THE USDA ON THE GROUND.
EDGE OF SPACE from the and out IN THE FIELD
UNCOMMON OPPORTUNITIES
Arkansas State offers undergraduate students opportunities to get out of the classroom and into the field conducting research usually reserved for master’s level or higher students.
RESEARCHING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Professor Argelia Lorence is the co-principal investigator for a NSF project studying heat stress on rice and wheat. Her work provides in-depth learning opportunities for 40 A-State undergraduates, and may lead to identifying grains that can thrive in a warmer environment. Dr. Michele Reba, with the USDA, has worked for years with A-State to develop strategies to manage the precious water resources needed for rice production, and was recently named the Researcher of the Year by the Arkansas Rice Federation at its 25th annual conference.

LAUNCH PAD
Professors Tillman Kennon and Ross Carroll worked along with A-State undergraduate students in a NASA project that flew a high-altitude balloon into the path of the 2017 total solar eclipse, collecting video, photographs and scientific data. The Arkansas BalloonSAT team, which includes students, has launched and flown 62 high altitude balloons from Arkansas and Missouri in the last 16 years. In 2024, they’ll be back at it — chasing the eclipse right here in Jonesboro.
Rooted in Research
AN INTEGRAL PART OF ARKANSAS STATE
Each year, A-State holds its annual student research event, Create@STATE. Students are encouraged to research any topic they desire and develop creative solutions under the advisement of an A-State mentor. Grants for extended research, as well as professional careers, can be launched here! Check out the Create@STATE podcast or YouTube channel for more information.

CAMPUS
Working in the Multicultural Center (MC) during my freshman year was a tremendous experience for me. People always welcomed you and brightened up your day with compliments. From help with my homework to learning about different cultures and making great friends, the MC made me feel at home. There were great events hosted that have raised multicultural awareness that is crucial for the campus environment, diversity and survival. Underrepresented groups can find like-minded individuals, and others can educate themselves on different perspectives.
The well-being and safety of our Red Wolves are our top priority, so it’s no secret why there are so many services offered and resources put in place. The STUDENT HEALTH CENTER (SHC), now operated by the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, is A-State’s on-campus clinic available for all registered students of the Jonesboro campus. Students needing examinations, immunization updates or treatment for minor illnesses or injuries can visit the SHC.
A-State’s UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENT (UPD) also provides services to students and actively practices crime prevention. Visit AState.edu/Police to learn more about how we maintain a safe and secure campus.
The university environment can be both exciting and challenging. The COUNSELING CENTER is here to help you learn to effectively manage and balance academic pressures as well as demands from family, friends and loved ones at the same time.
Whether you need support in academic performance, coping with your emotions or becoming more effective in your relationship with others, the Counseling Center is committed to helping you benefit as much as possible from your experience at A-State.
Serving as a teaching library, the DEAN B. ELLIS LIBRARY has vital information resources and skills that advance the university’s development and knowledge sharing. Equipped with study rooms and lounges (beanbags included!), the IT STORE, the A-STATE MUSEUM, WILSON ADVISING CENTER and even an ONLINE DATABASE, you will find the Dean B. Ellis Library proves to be much more than just books.
There are lots of great resources on the A-State campus that can enhance your overall college experience...
RESOURCES
The RED WOLF CENTER is home to all things fitness, wellness and sport. Equipped with an indoor track, three basketball courts, multipurpose activity courts, a rock-climbing wall, a dance studio, free weight and cardiovascular areas, a spin studio and assessment rooms, the possibilities are endless.
The Red WOLF Center and INTRAMURAL SPORTS program provide our students with a wide variety of activities that contribute to their overall health, social development and well-being. Alleviate stress by attending free group fitness classes such as yoga, aerobics, spin, Zumba and more. Participate in fitness challenges, indoor Intramural Sports, or just enjoy some open recreation! Did we forget to mention that you can rent a bike or hammock from the facility? Whatever you have in mind, you can find it here.
Whether you have a big test coming up or a paper due, A-State houses an ACADEMIC HUB to help you prepare by providing the most comprehensive btutoring services and peer-to-peer tutoring support. Connect with an academic success coach who can help you create a study plan for a particular course, assist you with study skills or even develop a time management plan that works best for you. Our ACADEMIC HUB can even help you hone your presentation skills and public speaking techniques. Although college is meant for you to independently navigate your education, the support and resources necessary to accomplish your goals is part of the learning experience.
If you have any unmet needs within the classroom setting, the OFFICE OF ACCESS & ACCOMMODATION SERVICES (A&AS) will meet with you and your instructor individually to get you everything you need inside the classroom to ensure your fullest potential can be reached. Rest assured, the assistance and support won’t end after high school! Contact A&AS to learn more about the application.

University Housing has been a wonderful experience for me. Living in the the residence halls, I had easy access to student events, classes and meetings. Staying on campus also brought lots of leadership and involvement opportunities. I worked as a Resident Assistant (RA), which also enhanced my college experience. I have been able to learn leadership and teamwork skills as an RA. Living on campus changed my college experience for the better. University Housing is a family that opened its arms to me. A-State truly became my home away from home.

Flex dollars operate like a declining balance account that can be used at any of our dining venues, including Acansa Dining Hall, the Food Court, Starbucks, the Campus Store and Cafe a la Cart. The purchase of any of the meal plans is dependent on number of years enrolled in college. Unused flex dollars will carry over from fall to spring if a spring board plan is purchased, but they must be used by the end of the spring semester to avoid forfeiture.
... From salad to dessert and everything in between to keep your belly happy, the newly renovated Acansa Dining Hall is a favorite spot on campus for students. If you are in the mood for something else, try the food court. We have sushi, smoothies, mac-and-cheese bowls, grilled-to-order fare, and the college staple – hot, melty, cheesy pizza. We even have the student favorite: Chick-fil-A. There is no shortage of other eateries around campus, too: Starbucks Coffee for your morning caffeine buzz, Einstein Bros. Bagels for all of your bakery and deli needs, and SimplyTo-Go for something quick to eat while on the move. Our Campus Store is always stocked for whatever snack you are craving and Howl On Wheels is A-State’s very own food truck with plenty of delectable delights. Visit the website to explore meal plans and get ready to chow down.

White table dining? Brunch? Music venues? Ramen shops? Student lofts? Brew pub? It is all in downtown Jonesboro. There is eclectic shopping from custom soaps to casual women’s clothing, to the headquarters store of one of the state’s prime outdoor lifestyle companies. Along with community festivals, downtown Jonesboro hosts special events for students such as the annual welcome back block party.

One of the largest urban parks in the state, Craighead Forest Park is an oasis of mountain biking and trail running. The 692-acre park includes a 60-acre lake for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. You can even overnight camp in the – wait for it – Craighead Forest. The park has helped host the Jonesboro Open, which is a part of the Disc Golf Pro Tour, three times on its disc golf course.
From the Turtle Creek shopping area and all the usual national brands to fun and funky local boutiques that feature the latest fashion trends, you can find most of what you are looking for in the growing shopping areas located near Red Wolf Boulevard and what the locals call “the old fairgrounds.” And if you cannot find it, just turn the page for more about the region.
