JOE & JOE ADDS NEW FLAVOR TO NYACK STORY BY JOSEPH KUHN AND JEN PEREZ ︱ PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

After 70 years and 3 successive generations of owning

and operating Joe & Joe Restaurant, the Longobardo family knows how to run an Italian eatery. Their newest location, which just opened in Nyack, is a testament to the years they’ve spent refining their craft. “I’ve wanted to be in business since I was 17,” explained Anthony Longobardo, a seasoned veteran of the industry and owner of the new location. Like his father and grandfather, Anthony has a passion for the culinary arts and Italian cuisine. He and his brother Joe took over operation of Joe & Joe, which was originally based in the Bronx in 1994. After 10 years, they decided to sell that location and open their business and, in the process, establish one of Nyack’s premier Italian restaurants. The newest Joe & Joe offers a unique fusion of old-world style and modern sensibility. The menu features classic Italian fare, brick oven pizza, chicken parmigiana, orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe, all of the traditional dishes that they’ve been serving since the 1940’s. It also offers cauliflower pizza and an “Impossible” vegan meatball served on a bed of fresh spaghetti squash garnished with basil, that truly lives up to its name. “We appeal to a vast target market of clientele,” explained Head Chef Maureen Genna. “We appeal to those who want to eat healthy, to younger generations and to traditionalists.” Chef Genna who has worked tirelessly to ensure that her original vegan RivertownMagazine.com

recipes are just as delicious as their inspirations. The vegan meatballs and burgers have all the flavor and texture of actual beef, offering a healthier alternative, and the chicken parm made with grilled chicken still retains the flavor of their hardier counterparts. Joe & Joe also offers flavorful salads made with fresh vegetables, some offer freshly dried fruits that are preserved in house by Genna. Proteins like fresh salmon, shrimp or chicken may also be added to these specialty salads. The restaurant is located on Main Street in Nyack and while its only been open five months, the new Joe & Joe is quickly becoming a popular destination in the Village. “Nyack is a vibrant community,” said Anthony when asked how he was enjoying the newer location. Anthony and his family are pleased to have set up shop

in their own backyard and look forward to expanding the family business; Anthony’s son has already begun working at the new bistro. Joe & Joe’s familial attitude expands beyond the restaurant; Anthony and his staff regularly volunteer time and resources for charities like Meals on Wheels and People to People and are proud to give back to their community. Joe & Joe also features a full bar offering specialty cocktails with fresh squeezed juices and clever names including: The Fresco, The Limoncello Drop, The Strawberry Basil and The Bronx. Happy Hour specials are offered Tuesday through Friday, 2-6PM. Private event space is available for special occasions like an upcoming baby or bridal shower, birthday parties or business meetings. Come check out Joe & Joe and visit Anthony and his dynamic staff for an enjoyable evening out and a delicious meal! E

GOOD HEALTH AND MERRIMENT AT SALUD WINE BAR SERVING WINE, TAPAS AND CRAFT BEER IN NYACK STORY BY ELLEN ZIEGLER ︱ PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Salud’s swirling hand-painted sign on the front windows

are a deep, Old World gold, very inviting and classy like the intimate wine bar itself – and like the owners Charles and Yenifer Sabaratnam. Charles has traveled the world searching for the finest wines with which he can gift the patrons he cherishes. A wine connoisseur, Charles loves to educate his customers and the community who have chosen to open their minds to new experiences while patronizing this charming location on Main Street in Nyack. Having inherited a love of wine from Charles, Yenifer shares his goals to combine the best in wines with small plate tapas. A glass of white Rioja partners with a unique tapas: Squid Ink Pasta. The wine is clean-tasting. The juices from the squid ink bathe the palate and conjure up memories of the ocean. Fresh organic parsley adds a garden touch, crispness and alkalinity. This extends the wine’s cool, lingering bouquet. Featured on the menu is a cheese plate accompanied by a red Napa Cabernet. Manchengo cheese, brie, dried cranberries, prosciutto and crisp crackers have their own flavor and texture, which blended with the California Cabernet. Charles’ vast knowledge about wine and food comes as naturally as his conversational ease with customers. And all this he wants to share with his community of patrons. Would you like to learn more about fine wines, but never had a mentor? You do now. People visit from Rockland, Westchester and Bergen counties as well as Nyack to enjoy moments of merriment at Salud. The beautiful, intimate space - artfully decorated by Yenifer - is available for private parties, while a modern

jukebox adds to the unique experience. “I want Salud’s ambiance to have the sense of a small village, with a twist of New York City,” said Yenifer, who talked of plans for an outdoor beer garden. “Try something different,” said Charles, whose wine list changes with the season. “Tempernillo, Syrah and Mourvèdre are reds. And Rose wines process the same grapes as red wines, but they’re pink because some of the skins are left on. Tannins from the skin give health benefits like antioxidants.” Charles is also a wine consultant who promotes major events. In June, Salud will be partnering with Rivertown and Nyack Boat Charter for a special Rivertown Exchange on the Hudson River – details forthcoming. Salud offers monthly live music events and poetry slams as well as happy hour specials. Ask about their Ladies Night when wines and bubbly are half off. Salud! Enjoy! Visit with friends, and try something different. E

with Salud Wine Bar White Rioja Pairs perfectly with Squid Ink Pasta

White Rioja? Yes, it’s from the Rioja region in Spain. We all know Rioja is a red wine, but there is also a white. Instead of the red using tempernillo grape, the white Rioja uses the viura grape. The grape is also known as the macabeo grape. It is the same grape used for cava, a sparkling wine from Spain. The grape has good structure with a medium body and notes of wildflowers and bitter almonds. I paired this wine with squid ink pasta which is round and has a deep flavor. The richness of the ink is well-balanced from the mild and balanced acidity of the White Rioja. Salud! Charles Sabaratnam is the owner of Salud Wine Bar in Nyack, NY E

UNION RESTAURANT LEADS WITH HAVERSTRAW RENAISSANCE SERVING CONTINENTAL CUISINE WITH A LATINO FLAIR STORY BY TOM RILEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Boasting a diverse community, breathtaking Hudson River views, and a growing local economy, Haverstraw is quickly becoming a popular rivertown destination among Rockland residents and visitors alike. At the forefront of this revival is the popular Union Restaurant. Well-known Executive Chef Jose David Martinez and Paulo Feteira, partner/owner and maitre d’ of Union Restaurant, have shared their vision, passion and talent to open a restaurant in Haverstraw that showcases a diverse, yet classic cuisine of Latino-fusion dishes. Located at 22-24 New Main Street in the historic Pressler Building, the restaurant offers a friendly and relaxed hacienda-style atmosphere, impeccable service and a great wine list. “Eleven years ago we made an investment in Haverstraw, and it has paid off,” said Paulo. “New stores are opening, and the local economy is vibrant and growing. With new sidewalks and lampposts installed, we are so proud of this community. We were the pioneers of the Haverstraw renewal and revival, and people from all over the county are enjoying our beautiful waterfront, parks and marina.” Residents as well as visitors from outside Rockland come to Union Restaurant for its unique menu. “I have regulars who moved to the Carolinas that fly up here, hang out in the Marina, and dine with us regularly,”

said Paulo. “Our community is ethnically diverse with Asians, gays and lesbians moving in our friendly community where people greet you with a welcome and warmth.” Paulo’s French and Portuguese background has influenced the inclusive nature of the restaurant. He worked his way up the rigorous ranks of French dining and achieved the rank of Captain. He spent time in England and at the prestigious Relais & Chateau in France. He met Jose David Martinez while working as a Captain at Peter X. Kelly’s Xavier’s in Piermont. They opened Union Restaurant in 2007, and later opened UNoodles Snack Bar also in Haverstraw. A car mechanic in El Salvador, Chef Jose David Martinez never imagined becoming an Executive Chef and owning his own restaurant. He started as a dishwasher in Xavier’s, and under the tutelage of Master Chef Kelly, who recognized his talent and curiosity, David studied and experimented with ingredients in his own home kitchen. Today he is considered one of the finest chefs in the Hudson Valley. “Our restaurants continue to grow in popularity thanks to our loyal patrons and valued staff. It’s the perfect place for a romantic evening, family gatherings, special occasions or for entertaining clients,” said Paulo. Patrons of Union Restaurant can get a taste of its new spring menu, full of the great cuisine and innovative dishes that have defined Union and its sister restaurant, UNoodles for over a decade. The Spring Menu contains a medley of fine affordable dishes like “Salmon a La Plancha” with yucca pancake and lobster sauce. Grilled swordfish with summer vegetables, asparagus burrie blanc is a favorite. Everybody loves the roasted asparagus soup with potato puree and crispy leeks garnished with creme fraiche. “Ceviche Mariquitas” with shrimp, avocados and tomato with plantain chips is in demand and also gluten-free. For a great appetizer, try the “Tomato Seco Burratta.” It has sundried tomatoes, crispy chayote, mozzarella & arugula pesto vinaigrette.

“We offer late night music entertainment,” added Paulo. “On Friday nights we have a band, and on Saturday night we have a DJ. We also have a Drag Show coming up once a month. We have rooms for private parties.” Be sure to head to Union Restaurant and enjoy delicious fine Latin dining – the outdoor patio is open, perfect for those warm Spring days. E

Some chorizo can be what we call a little too juicy. What I like to do is unwrap the chorizo from its package and let it air out in your refrigerator overnight. This will help dry out some of its natural juices and not over saturate the frying pan while cooking.

NEW RESTAURANT SUSHI & KIMCHI SERVES BEST OF BOTH WORLDS STORY BY ANGELINE SHERIDAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Sushi Chef and owner Byoung Moon is no stranger

to the restaurant business. He and his brother and co-owner Byong W. Moon together have a combined experience of nearly 70 years. Byong has worked at top Korean BBQ restaurants for over 40 years, and Byoung has been in the restaurant business for nearly 30 years, including one in nearby Paramus, New Jersey. When the brothers opened Sushi & Kimchi in Nyack this past March, they wanted to create a different restaurant that offered the best of Korean and Japanese cuisine. And they certainly did. The menu at Sushi & Kimchi offers plenty of options for diners who are new to Korean and Japanese food, as well as those who have long loved sushi rolls and Korean “Dolsot” or stone pot. According to General Manager Gina Ko, many who are new to Korean cuisine enjoy the Dolsot Bibimbap, a savory dish consisting of marinated sliced beef “Bulgogi” or short rib “Galbi,” with an assortment of vegetables, rice and the optional egg served steaming hot on a pot. The Seafood Dolsot Bibimbap is also a favorite. For meatlovers, the Korean BBQ is a must try, and more affordable than most Korean BBQ restaurants. There are three Korean BBQ options from which to choose: Bulgogi (sliced beef), Jeyuk Bokeum (pan-fried pork) and Spicy Pork Rib.

With every meal, guests are served kimchi (spicy cabbage). Other appetizers to try include the delicious seafood pancake and the dumpling soup. Save room for dessert because Sushi & Kimchi serves an incredible fried dough ice cream complete with mochi ice cream. Enjoy the best of Korean and Japanese cuisine at Sushi & Kimchi, a welcome addition to the vibrant dining scene in Nyack. E

THE WELL FED YOGI Pea and Mint Soup is such a beautifully vibrant color and tastes deliciously nourishing. It’s so easy and quick to make, and everyone loves it. The pasta is hearty enough to be satisfying but the lemon adds a lovely nod towards summer. The cumin spiced chickpeas add some smoky depth. Oh, the cupcakes are heavenly. Flaxseeds are the new eggs! The sponge is light with just the right amount of moisture. I found a food coloring that was plant-based, gluten-free and with no GMOs. It produced a beautiful color that was more reminiscent of the plant world than the bright colors produced by the chemically laden food colorings of old. It’s worth experimenting with natural food coloring as the frosting tastes so much better.

CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES WITH PINK FROSTING • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds 3 tablespoons water 1 3/4 cups almond milk 1/2 cup water 4 oz Earth’s Balance butter (or other vegan butter) 1 1/4 cups organic cane sugar (or white sugar) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cocoa powder 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder Pinch of kosher salt

For the pink frosting: • 2 1/2 cups organic confectioner’s sugar, sifted • 4 oz Earth’s Balance butter (or other vegan butter) • 1 pack of pink non-artificial food dye • 2 tablespoons almond milk • Pinch of salt

Mary Callen

Method: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a standard cupcake tray with unbleached paper cupcake liners. Place the ground flaxseeds and 3 tablespoons of water in a bowl and whisk well (by hand is fine) for a couple of minutes until it is thick and creamy. Add the almond milk and a 1/4 cup of the water. Whisk again and set aside. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar very well until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and remaining 1/4 cup water. Combine well. In a separate bowl stir together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed butter mixture along with the flax egg mixture. Mix until combined but do not over beat. Fill the cupcake holders with batter and bake for 25-30 minutes or when a toothpick stuck through the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Move the cupcakes to a baking rack and allow to cool thoroughly before frosting. To make the frosting: Place all the ingredients into a large bowl and beat well. If the mixture is too thick add a little more almond milk, if it’s too runny add a little more confectioner’s sugar. When you have reached the desired consistency, frost the cooled cupcakes.

The sun is shining, the temp is going up and the birds are singing - everything’s come up roses! Or should we say rosés! It’s time for that fun, versatile, oh so Mediterranean wine again. We’re not saying it isn’t enjoyed during the rest of the year, but it just seems to be lots more popular in the summer months. Consumption has increased by double digits in recent years. If you still haven’t tried any, now is the time. There is a renaissance going on and you should be part of it. Every country is on the rosé wagon. Years ago rosé was an afterthought. Let’s face it, rosé is so much cheaper to produce, and there is no need for valuable cellar storage space to be used for long-term aging. Picked in the fall, the grapes are then pressed but skin contact is limited to two to three days and then the juice is run off. The winemaker pays attention to the fermentation process for alcohol and flavor. When all the components are in balance and the color is perfect, the wine is then bottled and sold in the spring. What’s a winery not to like?

Today all sorts of varietals are being used: Sangiovese, Gaglioppo, Cannonau, Aglianico, Montepulciano, Corvina, Tempranillo, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Of course Provençal rosé is made with their tried and true recipe: Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvédre. Rhône rosés are allowed many more varietals but seem to concentrate more on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvédre. Tavel, an AOP (Appelation d’origine Protégée) the supposed aristocrat of rosés, is made mostly with Grenache and Cinsault, although Bourboulene, Calitor, Carignan, Clairette and Syrah are allowed. Rosé, no matter where in the world it’s from, can be made with any red varietal. ‘Tis the season to enjoy these easy, breezy wines. Chill and serve. As winemaker Charles Bieler says, yes, you can drink rosé and still be a bad#ss! E

Rosé goes with most all summer foods and is a great choice for picnics, especially now that some very good quality rosé is canned. We love to have sip and dips, with rosés being our wine of choice. Most are lower in alcohol and easy to drink. Due to using specific varietals and low temps in the fermentation tanks, they take on a lively, fresh and refreshing personality.

DISCOVER ARTEFACTS AT THE OUTSIDE IN GALLERY Building Community Through Art, Coffee and Events STORY BY JOSEPH KUHN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

The OUTSIDE IN has been a staple of the Rockland

art scene. Over the course of 11 years and dozens of shows, The OUTSIDE IN has hosted countless unique works of art, most of them produced right here in the Hudson Valley by members of the community. On any given day, visitors may find oil paintings, pottery, stone carvings, and even sculptures made from repurposed payphones, proudly displayed in the gallery and its outdoor sculpture gardens. The OUTSIDE IN also has an espresso bar and café that offers a wide selection of organic teas, French pastries and Hudson Valley Roasted coffees from Irving Farm. The cafe is decorated with the same original works displayed in the gallery with the addition of tropical plants and succulents which they also sell alongside locally sourced sundry items, and feels more like a studio than a coffee shop.

artists that lean towards the contemporary. Their upcoming exhibit, “Forest Story” is no exception. “Forest Story” features a collection of “luminous, romantic oil paintings of natural places,” all of which “explore our relationship and responsibility to the forest community.” Created by Grace Mitchell, a Piermont resident and a former Piermont librarian, the series was formed partially in response to “the current period of increasing threats to our environment.” It evokes the beauty of the natural world while at the same time conveying a sense of dread; these lovely yet eerie depictions encapsulate a line somewhere “between antiquity and Armageddon.”

The OUTSIDE IN is also available for rentals and will happily open their space for weddings, parties & business meetings. A true staple of Rockland’s cultural identity, The OUTSIDE IN always has something intriguing to share with its patrons, and is particularly well known for its innovative spin on traditional farmers markets branded, “The SOUK,” as well as its rotating art exhibitions focusing on works of local RivertownMagazine.com

According to Mitchell, her work is not meant to depict any particular place: “I want it to spark a greater appreciation of the forests that surround us and contribute so much to our well-being.” “Forest Story” is in some ways a call to arms intended to remind people of their inherent connection to nature and to reconsider their impact on the environment, as a “distressed contemporary response to accelerating deterioration in natural systems worldwide,” that’s both a loving portrayal of the natural world and a dire warning about its current state. “Forest Story” opens on May 5th and runs through August. SHOP SPRING & SUMMER TRENDS AT DUSTY ROSE IN NEW CITY

STORY BY TOM RILEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

When Roberta and Mike Zahl opened Dusty Rose Fine Lingerie and Sportswear 38 years ago, little did they know their mini-department store would be such a hit with the modern woman and teenagers. Roberta said, “We have every kind of top from dressy to casual tees and leggings. We have cruisewear and bathing suits. Our tee shirt lines feature Z Supply, Nation, Project Social T, Michael Stars, Wilt, Lilape and many more. Our merchandise is discounted, and our experienced sales associates have a reputation for giving the customer what they desire. They were featured in Rockland Magazine as your Favorite Sales Ladies (the voices of truth),” said Roberta. “If you come in for bras, you know you’ll be fitted properly.” Dusty Rose is well-known for their incredible selection of lingerie: “We have a full line of lingerie and are known for our expert bra fitting,” said Roberta.

Dusty Rose also carries an extended line of sportswear to meet customer demand. “Lots of people think of us as a lingerie store, but today sportswear dominates. Our bathing suits, exercise wear, tops, dresses and pants are hits with the modern women. Our biggest draw: all the merchandise is discounted. People leave here feeling they have been treated with tender, loving care. Mike and I have another store in Rye Brook, NY in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center for 31 years,” said Roberta, clearly an expert in the area of women’s wear. “When it comes to bras– you name it. We have Wacoal, Mary Jo, Chantele, Maidenform, Natori, Simone Perele and Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and many more. Nowhere in the Hudson Valley can you find the full gamut of underwear and outerwear as at Dusty Rose. We go out of our way to find unusual trends for our customers. Customers looking for leggings can choose among Lisse, One Step Ahead and Dex. We also carry accessories like scarves and jewelry. We are your one stop shop for fine lingerie and sportswear,” said Roberta.

“Joseph Ribkoff’s clothing line Planet is a big favorite of our customers. When it comes to lingerie Mary Jo and PJ Salvage is in demand,” said Roberta. Roberta and Mike travel a lot and have a great eye for fashion and what is trendy and in style. For quality fashion at a discount, go to this hidden gem in the Clarkstown Mall and find the treasures that have kept them in business for 38 years. You can call Roberta for a special outfit or just walk into the shop and browse. When you are on that cruise or walk into that special occasion all eyes will be on you, thanks to Dusty Rose! S

When she saw me, she looked briefly at me then went back to reading the magazine. A little while later, she looked at me again. Then back to the magazine. And then peeked at me again. I figured she must be reading my Call Me Crazy column, so the next time she looked up, I stuck out my tongue and rolled my eyes and tried to look crazier than normal. She hurriedly looked back towards the magazine, her face was red with embarrassment. And that’s when I

Ask Adam Team BAER & MCINTOSH NYACK, NEW YORK

WORK + MAGIC = “ASK ADAM TEAM” BUT IS IT REALLY MAGIC?

STORY BY ANGELINE SHERIDAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILLIAM RAVEIS BAER & McINTOSH

A day in the life of Adam Blankfort, “Ask Adam Team” founder, starts off with lots of coffee and a plan…

As the day sails by faster than a Tesla rocket, every day is different, filled with Adam and his A-team (Ryan Paige, Reed Tighe, Brett Thompson, Sid Goto, Michael Chang, Tim Kuder and Brian Keenan) streaming over research for today’s business: listing presentations and staying personally in touch with every client, be it a seller of a historic house locally, to a nearby farm in the next

county, or a waterfront property along the river; sellers and buyers alike. He is always in constant touch with his team - helping set up their routines, or wishing some luck, as they all confer, bouncing ideas off each other that builds to a bedazzling crescendo, to say the least. While the team speaks their own technical language, marketing strategy is their most valuable resource, and most importantly, being able to translate that language into simple talk and brilliant techniques. Their orchestration is perfect.

With listings averaging less than 36 days on the market, the highest list to sale price in Rockland County and over $24M of closed sales volume in 2018, it is no wonder the “Ask Adam Team” has recently been recognized by Bill Raveis himself, as the #2 affiliate team in the entire company at the 45th Annual Awards Ceremony held at Mohegan Sun on April 3, 2019. William Raveis Real Estate, Mortgage & Insurance is not a franchise, but a family-owned company of 135 offices (including 12 offices in Westchester and New York City) and 4,000+ agents in nine states. They are the #1 familyowned real estate company in the Northeast and the 9th largest real estate company in the Nation, based on closed sales volume and transactions, out of over 500 top brokerages in the country. “The culture between William Raveis Real Estate, Baer & McIntosh and the entire ‘Ask Adam Team’ works so well and is harmonious with our entire company- support for all, from our outstanding managers to our outstanding agents,” said Adam. “We have a proprietary database and patented algorithm of over 60,000 buyers and sellers throughout Rockland and Orange Counties, as well as Bergen County, NJ,” said Adam, as enthusiastically as the day it started. “We can show sellers exactly how our buyers’ search behavior matches the criteria of their particular house. Additionally, we have over 400,000 buyers subscribed to one of our premier marketing programs called ‘Raveis

Escapes’- clients seeking that quintessential ‘escapeworthy’ property within an hour of the city. We market our unique properties to this exclusive list, every Friday, on behalf of our New York City office.” Success is measured in many ways and while the award was wonderful to receive, Adam said, “We really measure our success by ‘Raving Fans,’ no better barometer than referrals by clients who also become close friends.” The “Ask Adam Team” is expanding strategically, and believes it is most important to encourage the right people, who are hopefully the right fit. Stay tuned to learn more about “Ask Jess” and “Ask Hannah,” two great women that share a wealth of dynamic personality, successful business experience and smiles that match everyone on the team and the entire William Raveis Baer & McIntosh family… Yes, smiles count! ANCHORED TO HAVERSTRAW 14 Broadway Property Has Limitless Potential

STORY BY JOSEPH KUHN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

One

of the largest properties in historic

downtown Haverstraw is about to be completely renovated and reopened. After 20 years of neglect, 14 Broadway is being refurbished and repurposed thanks to the efforts of owner Dan Lenchner at NuRock Holdings, based in Pearl River. The top level of the nearly 20,000 rentable square-foot property will be converted into apartments, and the possibilities for the main floor and basement are limited only to one’s imagination. “Grocery store, fitness center, laundromat, urgent care center, restaurants and bars” are just some of the possible uses for the property according to Dan. A professional real estate developer and personal acquaintance of Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut, Dan has his work cut out for him choosing what sort of tenant would be best suited for his new acquisition. The building was originally constructed in the early 20th century and was a Five and Dime for most of its life. When the general mercantile store closed, no one could figure out what to do with the space. “We could never get the right tenant to commit,” explained Mayor Kohut, who is hopeful that the new owner will be able to realize the property’s potential. “I’d like to see it become a destination spot, something that draws people into the village.” He suggested a number of possibilities for new occupants ranging from restaurants, arcades, a brewery or The town of Haverstraw offers many attractions for residents and tourists including a bustling downtown, playground and beautiful river views.

even an axe-throwing bar. When asked why he had such high hopes for that one specific location, Mayor Kohut simply replied: “Look at it.” He has a point. Considered to be one of the anchors of the village of Haverstraw, 14 Broadway may be the largest building on the town’s main street and is certainly one the most scenic. The second floor features floorto-ceiling windows that offer a commanding view of the entire downtown area and the entire interior of the building is finished with original brick. At 75 years old, the property is one of the younger buildings on Broadway. It is neighbored by other historic sites such as Lucas Candies, a sweet shop that

has been open for over a century, and the Bricktown Inn, a quaint bed and breakfast run out of a home that was built before the Civil War. Like those historic properties, 14 Broadway was constructed from bricks made right in town. Haverstraw is of course renowned for its brickmaking industry having literally and figuratively been built by the blocks. The natural clay deposits that sit under the town, coupled with its proximity to the Hudson River, made Haverstraw a powerhouse in the industry. It was perfectly situated to create and ship vast amounts of brick. By the 1880s, there were over 40 brickyards in the Haverstraw area. At the height of production, more than 300 million bricks were being shipped out of Haverstraw Bay to New York City annually. The industry fueled the town economy for centuries and provided the material for countless historic buildings including the “anchor of Broadway.” Bring your architect plans and your dreams when you talk to Dan Lenchner about this unique property in one of the most historic rivertowns. YOU AND YOUR TAXES

I just filed my tax return. Which records should I keep? I am frequently asked by clients: “How long do I need to keep my tax records?” and “Can I throw this ‘crap’ away?” I wonder the same thing occasionally, especially when I am doing some spring cleaning. The IRS has rules for everything,

need the cost of certain assets. If you’re self-employed or have a small business, or you have income from a variety of sources or a complex tax situation, keep your records longer. The IRS has up to six years to audit anyone who neglects to report

including record retention. Let’s take a look.

more than 25% of income.

The IRS generally has up to three years after the tax-filing deadline to initiate an audit. So, after April 15 this year, keep returns and documents for tax years 2016 - 2018. Keep copies of your W-2 forms; 1099 forms reporting interest, dividends, capital-gains distributions and other income; canceled checks and receipts for charitable donations; records showing eligible expenses for other deductions and credits (and eligible expenses for health savings account and 529 withdrawals); and other information you needed to document income or deductions shown on your tax returns. Also keep proof of minimum essential health insurance coverage or qualified for an exemption, and records of any premium subsidy you received. I always recommend that taxpayers keep their actual tax return forms forever. You may need them when applying for a mortgage, Social Security, disability insurance, or

There are other documents you should keep beyond the three or six years: Keep records of the purchase date and price of stocks and mutual funds in taxable accounts. You need to report the purchase date and price when you sell the investment to establish the basis and determine the taxable gain or loss. Brokers must report the cost basis of stocks purchased in 2011 or later. But even for investments you made after then, it helps to keep your own records if you switch brokers. If you inherit stocks, keep records of the value on the day the original owner died to help calculate your basis when you finally sell them. You should keep records of home improvements as long as you own the house. If you don’t live in a house for at least two years, or your gains exceed certain thresholds, you may have to pay taxes when you sell the house. You will need records to prove your cost to minimize the tax bite.

Also keep Form 8606 reporting nondeductible contributions to traditional IRAs until you withdraw all of the money from the IRAs. The form proves that you’ve already paid taxes on the contributions and won’t be taxed on them again. Ask your CPA what records you need to keep and for how long. He can help you to minimize your “Spring Cleaning” each year. Go to www.irs.gov for more information on record retention rules. Joseph A. For single-family home sales under $ 1 million, 76% of transactions average $560,718. “We don’t differentiate between the luxury and lowerprice homes we sell or list,” said Ellis. “All clients receive attentive and personalized service and a detailed marketing plan. YOUR GATEWAY TO HEALTH Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Treatment Opens Its Doors STORY BY ANGELINE SHERIDAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Dr. Binod Shah has been studying and practicing pain management for the last 15 years as the Assistant Professor of Rehab Medicine and Pain Management at Montefiore Medical Center. He also has his own practice in Yonkers for spinal pain and rehab medicine, and was voted Top 3 Best Pain Management Doctors in the area. With Dr. Shah’s wealth of medical experience, he knows the benefits, as well as the limitations, of traditional pain treatments. Dr. Shah has been studying stem cell therapy as an alternative treatment to alleviate pain and suffering when traditional medical interventions have failed or proven inadequate. In March, he opened a new office—Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Treatment—at the beautiful Perillo Tours Plaza building in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, the same office used by the Honorable President Richard Nixon. Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Treatment represents Dr. Shah’s ongoing commitment and passion for this cutting edge medical field. Stem Cells Explained Stem cells have the unique ability to develop into different cell types in the body. They also act as an internal repair system: they repair and replace dying cells to regenerate damaged tissue. Stem cells come from adipose tissue (fat), bone marrow and cord blood. “Stem cell therapy has the potential to improve symptoms of many conditions including musculoskeletal pain, neurological disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile disfunction and even antiaging,” explains Dr. Shah. “It can help people better than pain medication.” What to Expect from Stem Cell Therapy Stem cell therapy is an outpatient procedure that is

all natural and non-toxic. According to Dr. Shah, there are no side effects or allergic reactions because the stem cells come from the patient’s own body. Unlike cortisone injections that may weaken tissue, stem cell therapy heals and strengthens tendons and ligaments, which strengthens and thickens the tissue. Is Stem Cell Therapy Right for You? Candidates for stem cell therapy are patients who have sports injuries, arthritic joints, lower back pain, tennis elbow, partial ACL tears, plantar fasciitis, bursitis of the hip, knee, elbow and Achilles’ tendon. Stem cell therapy is ideal for patients who are seeking alternative treatments to surgery or those who do not want a long recuperation or rehabilitation period. “Stem cell therapy has a very high success rate,” says Dr. Shah. “Many feel relief of pain immediately but most see improvement of symptoms typically within one to two months.” Dr. Shah has committed his life’s work to helping patients treat their pain symptoms and injuries, and looks forward to helping more people function at their optimal levels.

TALES FROM THE CHESTNUT TREE That Call You Never Want, by Neal A. Deutsch, CFP® Recently I got a call from a client—one of those calls you never want to get—that her husband had recently passed away. It was relatively quick: just a few weeks from diagnosis to passing. A one in a million occurrence. So rare you only read about these things in magazines, or never heard of the diagnosis. It could never happen to me or someone I know. Well, it did.and it’s the worst kind of terrible. I am a Certified Financial Planner®. I plan all day, every day to help people anticipate the most obvious events in life, and I help people plan for the unexpected. They say that man (and women) plan, and G-d laughs: it’s true. No matter how hard we try to seek out all the answers, facts, faults, remedies, alternatives and solutions to our problem, there always lies just beyond our comprehension an outcome not figured into the equation. Sometimes it’s the obvious we overlooked, and sometimes, like my dear friend, it was beyond our realm to include in our calculations. I likened this sad occurrence to all that retirement planning I do for my clients: you’ve put so much time into your planning for the event, have you planned for the event itself? Let’s do a little dig, shall we? Retirement planning, for most of us, is the act of putting a little bit away every year for decades with the intent of having enough at a certain age to be able to stop working and continue to live in the manner we have been accustomed to. Note I said certain age, and not a pre-determined age. Retirement planning is like a road trip: if you don’t know where you’re going, you’re never going to get there. Besides saving, what are you doing to prepare for when you finally have the rest of your life to yourself, and what do you need to do to get there? It’s not about “Friday I was working and Monday I’m retired.” If you’re paring down, do you need to sell a house or properties, cars, clean out closets, set up your new soon to be workshop, or any of a thousand things to be done to prepare for retirement besides saving. All those

years you saved, you sacrificed every year by having less money in that year to spend, getting ready for that elusive, sometime in the future retirement date. But have you put much thought into what will happen when you actually do retire? You put so much time into planning for the event, have you put in as much time planning what to do with the event? Allow yourself to dream, but while you dream, put some definitive into the equation. Driving somewhere without a destination will keep you driving your entire life- with no stops to enjoy the scenery… 845.369.0016 | neald@chestnutinvestment.com chestnutinvestment.com “Give me a call… I love making new friends!”

ROCKLAND-BERGEN MUSIC FESTIVAL BIGGER THAN EVER Grammy Award Winning John Prine to Headline June 23 STORY BY ANGELINE SHERIDAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY JOE D’URSO

Nyack, NY with the Rockland County Music Awards, the 6th annual Rockland-Bergen Music Festival (RBMF) will, for the first time, span five days and four music venues. Headlining this year will be Steve Earle & The Dukes on June 22, and American songwriting legend and 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominee John Prine on June 23. Both will be performing at German Masonic Park in Tappan, NY. This serves as Prine’s only metro-area performance of the summer.

Three-time Grammy Award Nominee and 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee John Prine will headline the RocklandBergen Music Festival on June 23 at German Masonic Park in Tappan, NY.

Presented by New Jersey/New York fixture Joe D’Urso and Halmar International, this year’s festival, which has become an anticipated summer event among locals, will feature over 35 artists on 4 stages, over 5 days, as well as 16 nonprofit organizations to realize D’Urso’s vision of a musical event that combines great music and important causes. The daytime/outside portion of the RBMF takes place at German Masonic Park in Tappan, NY on June 22 and June 23.

Joe saw a need to bring outdoor entertainment and national talent in Rockland and Bergen counties five years ago on his 50th birthday. “I hoped to see it grow and bring in many of the world’s best songwriters as well as involve more local charities and communities,” explained Joe. “I had a few ‘goal’ songwriters in mind, and I am extremely proud to present John Prine and Steve Earle this year who were part of the ‘goal’ writers I was thinking about. Prine is a songwriting legend and Americana Artist of the Year two years in row, and Earle has also been one of those writers who has stood behind his convictions and his songs. It’s a dream come true to present both of these great songwriters at this year’s RBMF!”

The festival begins on Wednesday, June 19 at Levity Live in West Nyack/Palisades Mall as the RBMF will honor area personalities with the first ever Rockland County Music Awards. The honorees will be announced in the June issue of Rivertown Magazine. The free admission event will be a mixture of music, speeches and hopefully a new chapter for Rockland County looking at it’s past, present and future. The next two days of music will take place at Rockland/ Bergen County music venues ’76 House, located in Tappan and The Turning Point, in Piermont. Featured acts on June 20 and 21 include School of Rock Orangeburg, Bach to Rock, McMule, Scott Wolfson & Other Heroes, The Slippery Chickens and Matt Jaffe. The daytime outdoor portion of the RBMF will take place on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 at German Masonic Park featuring headliners Donna The Buffalo, Joe Purdy, Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan, Williams Honor, Willie Nile Band, James Maddock Band, Guy Davis, Jeffrey Gaines, The Roues Brothers, Miss Emily, Tim O’Donohue & TMU, Johnny Markowski, David Frye, Christine Martucci, Chihoe Hahn, Adam Falcon and full length concerts from headliners Steve Earle & The Dukes and John Prine.

Rockland-Bergen Music Festival’s mission is to host a week of music that will connect the local community to great artists as well as charities like Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, WhyHunger, Light of Day and many more. There will be 16 charities on site each day under the banner of “Active’s Circle of Hope” once again sponsored by Active International. According to Joe, having as many local charities involved as possible is just as important as having some of our country’s best talents at RBMF each year. “I always joke that the weekend of RBMF is my inner Harry Chapin and Pete Seeger exploding. I once heard a great quote from Pete Seeger, told by Harry Chapin that went something like ‘when you hang out with people who are committed, you hang out with the folks with the live hearts, the live minds, the live eyes and your life will be richer.’ I am living proof of that as are many others. It’s not riches in the bank that he is alluding to, but the richness of life.” At the RBMF, Joe hopes every attendee can connect with a local charity they can support. “My goal from day one was to have every single person who walks into German Masonic Park make a connection with one of the organizations that we have on site each day. He has owned Sweet Pete’s Ice Cream Shop, Clemente’s Martial Arts & Fitness Center and hosted a local radio program called ‘Clem in the PM Afternoon Train Wreck.’ “With all these businesses, I have finally found my true calling and passion. People need help today. They have so many worries and anxieties. Millions of people across the country are experiencing varying degrees of anxiety, emotional and financial problems, depression and mental illness.” said Pete. “‘The CLEMental Health SHOW” is a radio program where we’ll play music, talk, take phone calls and have an open unfiltered dialogue all in an effort to break the stigma of mental illness.” “I’ll be following the successful format that Delilah has been using for 25 years, just changing love & break-ups with mental illness and overcoming it. I’m no newcomer to radio. I had huge success with my syndicated show ‘No Holds Barred.’ It was the first Mixed Martial Arts Show to air on Sirius Satellite Radio and it was syndicated on Sports Byline Radio Network. As I was a pioneer for MMA Talk Radio, I plan on doing the same for mental health,” said Pete.

In the U.S. in 2018, 41% of people suffering a mental health condition had no access to services. Tell Alexa to tune in WRCR AM 1700 on Sunday nights at 7PM and listen to “The CLEMental Health SHOW.” Pete Clemente, Host, “The CLEMental Health SHOW”

“The reason why I’m involved in mental health is because I experienced a breakdown myself, an epic breakdown! I suffered a severe break of my right leg on a carnival slide. At that point in my life, I was on top of the world in my business, finances and relationships. The injury was so devastating, it took over four years to make somewhat of a recovery. During that time, I dealt with constant anxiety which turned into severe depression and suicidal thoughts, lots of them. I gained over 50 pounds, and at that point I lost the will to live,” said Pete.

and all who are suffering. It’s my personal goal to help break the stigma of mental illness and offer an ear and a helping hand to anyone who may be suffering out there,” said Pete, philanthropist, entrepreneur and most of all, a decent human being. R

Thankfully, Pete recovered and is better than ever. “God intervened, and I felt determined to get my life back together which I have done. This year I’m back on top of the world: I’ve lost all that weight and then some. But my experience opened my eyes to mental illness

ETERNAL GOOD VIBRATIONS

IN MEMORY OF STEFAN WALDMAN STORY BY BRETT THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF STEINBERG

This past February 15th, the rest of the band and I packed up after another awesome performance at The Turning Point in Piermont. It was a great time with a full house.

walked me over to the sign up list. His friendly, disarming nature immediately helped to calm some of my nerves. After I played my set, Stefan couldn’t have been nicer

Afterwards, at the bar with a cold beer in hand, I was chatting with one of my all time favorite bandmates, Stefan. Stefan is a man in his late 60s sporting blue tinted glasses and a warm smile. He’s an amazing singer and musician who plays many instruments including: guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He regularly uses his talents to inspire others to express themselves through music. Most importantly, he is the nicest, most generous, and completely genuine guy you could ever meet. While we were talking, he mentioned that he’s dealing with some health issues. Stef assured me that it was nothing to worry about, saying, “I have an appointment with the doctor this week. We’ll figure it out.” I never would’ve guessed that night was going to be the last time I--or anyone else--would have the honor of sharing the stage with this incredible musician and friend.

and his positive feedback gave me enough confidence to return.” There are countless stories that echo Ben’s sentiment. Person after person posted stories about how Stef supported and encouraged them on their path in music and performance. And it makes sense, that story personifies what Stefan was all about: support, self expression through music, and kindness.

Stefan Waldman was a fixture in the local music scene for decades. Together with Jeff Steinberg, he was a founding member of a Rockland County based acoustic guitar meetup group, Good Vibrations. So far, Good Vibrations has been responsible for over 700 events, including weekly open jam sessions hosted by Stef at both the Whiskey Kitchen in Valley Cottage and Growler & Gill in Nanuet. After his sudden and untimely passing from cancer on March 22nd, there was massive outpouring of stories that described how much he enriched many lives. One of the members of Good Vibrations, Ben Fedigan, said, “I remember opening the door, walking in, and there was Stefan with a big, welcoming smile on his face. He saw I was carrying a guitar, so he introduced himself and

Stef and I would rehearse Friday mornings with the John Whoever & Who Are They Band at the historic Piermont Reformed Church. During breaks, we would chat about different local players, gigs, our influences and heroes, but nothing made Stef’s eyes light up more than talking about his students. In addition to encouraging adult performers, Stef also taught multiple after school music programs throughout the area over the past ten years. Given his passion, it’s no surprise that he loved passing the creative torch through teaching children piano and music theory. I will always remember his palpable joy when he said, “I’ve got them writing their own songs! These little kids are AMAZING!” Thinking about it now, it makes me feel thankful knowing that the next generation of Rockland County musicians had the chance to be inspired by this great man. Numerous shows and events dedicated to Stefan’s life have taken place and more are in the works. A Facebook page, A Tribute to Stefan Waldman (facebook.com/ groups/TributeToStefan/), has been set up to share stories, pictures, and events. His spirit and inspiration will live on forever in our community and beyond. Rest in peace my friend. Thanks for everything. R RivertownMagazine.com

ENERGY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION Shared Solar Farms Help Mothers Provide for Their Families STORY BY REX TURNER ︱ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SOLSTICE COMMUNITY SOLAR

LOCAL

A mother of two, Josie found comfort in consistent savings on her monthly bills

Mothers have a unique power to inspire our dreams. They sacrifice to give us every possible opportunity to succeed, facing steep financial burdens in the process that turn even regular bills into a challenge. Selflessly, they take on these challenges to provide for their families.

Most parents would love to see consistent savings on their bills, but few have the time to take on extra savings projects on top of their regular schedules. They deserve a helping hand to provide for their children’s future. For Josie, a mom with a two-year-old and another child on the way, help came in the form of free monthly savings on her electric bill. Josie knew that clean energy could save her money, but as a new parent who rented her home, she didn’t think she had much control over her energy source or price. Solstice, a local community solar company, changed her mind. Solstice helped Josie sign up for a nearby community-shared solar farm. Since the farm wasn’t on her property, she didn’t need to pay or take time to install anything. From the get-go Josie saved 10% on her energy bills every month, meaning she could spend more on the most important things for her family.

Steph Speirs started Solstice to bring the benefits of clean energy to every American

An Opportunity for Parents to Save Solstice’s Co-Founder and CEO, Steph Speirs, started her organization with a mission to bring affordable solar energy to every American through free-to-join solar farms. You may have noticed some of their solar farms around the area, but you might not have known you can actually subscribe and earn a discount on your electric bill every month. Through Solstice’s work with organizations like NYSERDA, community solar is bringing savings to customers all over New York. Speirs was raised by a single mother who emigrated to the United States from South Korea. “We grew up on food stamps, and my mother went hungry so her kids could eat,” she said. Endlessly dedicated, her mother worked three jobs to support the one-bedroom apartment she shared with her three children. Every month, she struggled to pay the electric bill. “My mother pushed education as the way out of poverty, and she was right,” said Speirs, who went on to graduate with a B.A. from Yale, an MPA from Princeton, and an MBA from MIT. “I hope to spend my life working to ensure other families have the same opportunities I’ve been fortunate to receive.” RivertownMagazine.com

Solar energy offers an avenue to build a sustainable future for generations to come. Enough solar energy reaches the planet in an hour to power all of society for a year. Harnessing that power for good is the best way to make sure we have a stable, local, and cheap energy source for years to come. “I decided to sign up because I feel like we owe it to the future generation,” said Paula Cohen, a geography teacher who joined her local community solar farm. “Sustainability, whether it’s for me, my kids, or my kids’ kids, matters,” said Jeff Abrams, another shared solar subscriber. Community solar is making it easier and more practical for each of us, whether we rent or own our home, to play our part for the next generation.

You Can Shape a More Sustainable Future There are community solar farms in: • Middletown, Orange County • Ellenville, Ulster County • Mt. Hope, Orange County

The protracted troubles of The Time Nyack hotel might be in the past, now that it has new owners. On April 1, Juniper Capital Partners and IMH Financial Corporation announced the acquisition of the upscale hotel, which first opened in May 2016. “This first-of-its-kind lifestyle hotel in the Hudson Valley has yielded tremendous benefits for the city of Nyack, surrounding communities and the greater region,” said Juniper Capital Real Estate Managing Partner Jay Wolf. “Upon acquisition, we will continue to deliver on local promises while inviting guests from around the country to experience greater New York.” Built within the framework of a four-story, former factory, The Time Nyack is frequented by Westchester and Rockland residents because of BV Grill restaurant, an off-shoot of the Bobby Vans Steakhouse, which will remain in operation. AN EDGE ON IMPECCABLE

Edgewood Country Club Exceeds in Modern Amenities STORY BY ELLEN ZIEGLER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY EDGEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB

LOCAL

My car followed the tree-lined road into Edgewood

Country Club when I saw a rabbit in a pocket of shade, possibly anticipating an Easter Egg Hunt on the vast grounds. My imagination raced like Alice in Wonderland after she followed a rabbit down a hole. The only holes surrounding my car were on the golf course, but where were the buildings? Would I get lost? Would I miss my appointment to interview V.P. of Membership Sales, Marketing & Club Operations Kyla Basso? A lawn mower revved up, construction sounds followed, and then I saw the clubhouse. The entrance reminded me of a five-star hotel. Edgewood’s bright, modern interior – designed by top country club/restaurant designer Judd Brown – has a softer look than what one would expect from a country club, and the neutral color scheme of gray, taupe, purple, black and white complement the wide range of events Edgewood hosts throughout the year.

/

The friendly, outgoing voice of a stately, stunning, young blond woman diverted my attention. “Would you like a tour?” the blond woman said, introducing herself as Kyla Basso. Kyla and I walked through the gray and white bar room, a beautiful focal point of Edgewood, where crisply dressed, soft-spoken employees and catering staff were setting up for a special event. The wine room, adjacent to the bar room, offered a quiet retreat to learn more about this unique country club just minutes from Rockland County. Established in 1959, Edgewood Country Club was purchased in 2015 and began a multi-million dollar renovation to transform it into a top-notch, familyfriendly, full-service facility. Unlike other country clubs that are geared primarily towards men, Edgewood offers attractive facilities and entertainment for men, women and kids.

Edgewood’s four membership options reflect its inclusive nature: “Golf” memberships allow the member, spouse and kids unlimited use of the whole club. “Weekday Golf” members can play from Tuesday to Friday with dining and social events included. A “House” member has social privileges and the option to occasionally play two rounds of golf during the week. The “Resort” package is for non-golfing families. They can use the heated pool or play tennis or just enjoy the country club feeling.

“As we see our membership growing, we try to respond to what they want out of the country club experience,” said Kyla. “We are a progressive club in a sense that we allow cell phones. We also allow jeans in our dining room, as long as they are not ripped or torn.” Its sprawling 27-hole golf course is one of a kind. Its elegant main ballroom comfortably seats 450 guests, and there is Wi-Fi throughout the property. The kids love the heated outdoor pool, summer camp and the

Childcare for young children are available so parents can enjoy tennis or golf without worry. One of the highlights of a country club membership is the food. “We have a phenomenal Executive Chef Tony Villanueva who can cook anything,” said Kyla. “In our Midway Building, golfers can eat lunch, have a cocktail or relax and talk.” Kyla puts Edgewood Country Club first, and she has led a dynamic life, inspiring the members and guests. She was introduced to golf by her father at the age of two and started competing professionally at eight years old. When she graduated from school, she turned pro and played LPGA and PGA tournaments. She funded her own career, always working, always trying new things, excelling in so many. She still plays golf professionally, but might need a clone when the club expands. BECKERLE LUMBER: A FAMILY TRADITION

Laurence Beckerle Sr.

STORY BY JAMIE KEMPTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY BECKERLE LUMBER

The name Beckerle has been synonymous with lumber in Rockland County since 1940, when Laurence Beckerle Sr. founded the company that bears his family’s name. The Beckerles have built a flourishing business that emphasizes quality products, knowledgeable advice and attentive service from the company’s experienced, professional staff. The people at Beckerle Lumber Supply Co. have always been deeply involved in the Rockland County community – as friends, neighbors, business associates. That sense of community envelops every aspect of this family-owned, third-generation enterprise: in the warm, first-name relationships employees have with the company’s many loyal customers; in the mingling with Beckerle folks at social outings, at the grocery store or house of worship, at children’s school and athletic events; and through the family’s community

Lawrence T. “Pete” Beckerle Jr.

philanthropy throughout three generations of Beckerle leadership. “Lending a helping hand or providing donor support if we can is simply the right thing to do,” says Laurence T. “Larry” Beckerle III, who serves as company president and directs the daily operations. The family tradition lyrically referenced in Beckerle Lumber commercials spans the legacy of charitable giving instilled by Laurence Beckerle Sr. and continued by Laurence T. “Pete” Beckerle Jr., and Larry III and his siblings.

FOUR CONVENIENT LOCATIONS Beckerle Lumber Supply Co. originated in Spring Valley. It now operates four branches, more than any other building materials supplier in Rockland: the main branch in Spring Valley; the Congers branch, opened in 1974; the Orangeburg location, started in 1996; and the Haverstraw branch, opened in 1997. Beckerle had operated a branch in West Nyack from 1974 until 1996, when the Palisades Center Mall began construction on the site.

TRIAL BY FIRE A company does not survive for more than threequarters of a century without riding out difficult periods and adapting to changing times and evolving customer needs. Over the years, Beckerle Lumber has weathered tough circumstances that have shuttered other local lumber businesses. These conditions include economic recession, building downturns, fluctuating forest product costs, competition from big-box retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s and chain stores like Rickel, Pergament and Channel, and industry pressure to drop retail business in favor of exclusively serving professional trade contractors. Undoubtedly its greatest challenge, however, struck on Saturday, July 4, 1959 – the Fourth of July – when a fire incinerated the entire Beckerle lumberyard in Spring Valley, with the company having minimal insurance coverage. Such a catastrophic event might have wiped out another company, but the Beckerles responded with a resiliency and can-do spirit that not only salvaged the operation but set it on a course for future prosperity. They installed a trailer as a temporary office and, with assistance from area lumber firms in the form of borrowed equipment and supplies, were back making deliveries to customers within 48 hours. Despite two more fires within 10 years, in 1963 and 1968, Beckerle Lumber never closed its doors. It persevered, and continued to serve the growing Rockland community.

PETE BECKERLE: STEADY HAND, SOUND JUDGMENT Pete Beckerle officially took the reins as head of the family business in late 1965, although he had assumed greater responsibilities several years before. [His father was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in October 1958 and died in June 1966 at age 78.] Pete oversaw or helped oversee much of Beckerle Lumber’s growth, from its move after the 1959 fire from its original home at Routes 59 and 45 in Spring Valley to Chestnut Street in the village, to its expansion to Congers, West Nyack, Orangeburg and Haverstraw. During the 1960s, Pete anticipated the need to accommodate the increasing number of “do-ityourselfers” (DIY) – customers who wanted to make

their own home improvements rather than rely solely on hired professionals. Instead of referring customers to local hardware stores as had been past practice, Beckerle introduced its own line of hardware products to offer more convenience and “one-stop shopping” to homeowners. Lumber trade shows during the 1980s warned companies like Beckerle to abandon the retail component and forget about selling hardware, and instead concentrate on doing business with contractors. But Pete Beckerle firmly believed in the idea of serving both the trades professionals and homeowners, despite advice from many in the industry to forgo retail. His judgment proved sound, as Beckerle’s success shows, while many independent lumberyards in Rockland and Orange counties that focused strictly on contractor sales succumbed when hit by economic downturns and the competition from big-box retail stores. Beckerle Lumber continues to be a mainstay in and around Rockland County. To the Beckerles, the overall value proposition is clear: consumers will be making an investment in their community by spending money in support of a locally owned, fair business—dollars that will stay in the community and provide some relief with their taxes. “Local businesses like Beckerle Lumber are integral to the ongoing survival of the community,” said Larry Beckerle. LEARNING COLLABORATIVE FLOURISHES STORY BY MARY BUCHBINDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAROL BARETZ

In the spring of 2007, a remarkable education program emerged out of mere dreams... a small group of Rockland residents took the kernel of an idea around to a few local colleges and ultimately, we got a gracious “YES!” from Long Island University. Provost, Nancy Low Hogan led the way as we reached out across the county to find teachers and students for “The Learning Collaborative,” offering courses like those from our longago college days; intense and filled with discussion. But, this time around, students’ family lives and work schedules dictated much less assigned homework and definitely no grades! Initially, about 50 students tested the waters and 10 gifted teachers from various walks of life were eager to stir the kettle. We had literature from old England and modern novelists; an anthropologist who revealed underlying social structures of the Middle East; a physicist who wanted us to catch us up on Einstein… and then taught us Tai Chi; another physicist who preferred to teach his passion - Bible history; a biologist who opened up the world of genetic studies; a world-touring jazz musician who discussed and played his favorite recordings; an economist who gave us her all about current trends, and then took us into the dark room of her passion for photography… and others. The Learning Collaborative eventually moved to the New City Jewish Center, and has been growing way beyond our dreams. A total of 300 students are enrolled each season with about 50-55 class from which to choose. We are open two sessions in the Spring season and two in the Fall. Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10AM to 3PM. Each session is six weeks.

This Spring, a former anesthesiologist offers tales of the operating room, but also another course about his passion, James Joyce’s “Ulysses”; a former politician teaches current NY State politics in one course, and gives us another about the most stunning participant in South African history, Nelson Mandela; Others: The Giant Awakes: China; U.S. Congress; Bioethics; Joy Through Improvisation; Opera Experience… and more! Every student who walks through our doors does so because they love to continue learning! And the special moments between classes, or in the lunchroom, getting to know other students who share their interests or having a chance to talk with their teachers, who now might be sitting right next to them munching on a sandwich. The Learning Collaborative is governed by a Board of Directors, which organizes the classes, recruits teachers, creates the catalogues and evaluates teachers with feedback data collected from students. New City Jewish Center coordinates registration and offers an excellent support system in the classrooms and lunchroom. Would you like to join us, as a student or a teacher? Please get in touch with Brenda Drucker who is available Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30AM to 5PM, and Mondays and Wednesdays from 9AM to 2PM, which are the best days to call. 845-638-9600 / Ext. 103. R

PENGUIN REP THEATRE ANNOUNCES NEW SEASON STORY BY TOM RILEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY PENGUIN REP THEATRE

The acclaimed Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning comedy, Art, followed by a thought-provoking look back at RFK in Kennedy: Bobby’s Last Crusade, kicks off the newly announced four-show 2019 mainstage season at Penguin Rep Theatre in historic Stony Point. Three special events also are scheduled for the new season, headlined by a return performance of the internationally renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter on October 26. “At this time of turmoil and mistrust, we’re excited to share enduring stories that dig deep into the heart and offer a wide canvas of emotions, from joy and surprise to tears and laughter,” said Penguin’s founding artistic

director Joe Brancato. “Our four productions, along with four new play readings and the three very special events – all chances to connect to universal hopes, challenges and dreams.” The professional Equity theatre under the leadership of Brancato and executive director Andrew M. Horn, is entering its 42nd season May 17 in its home theatre – a repurposed 1880s hay barn – with the following lineup: Art – Yasmina Reza’s provocative play about long-time friends who come to laughs – and blows – over the value of an expensive painting. Mr. Brancato will direct. Kennedy: Bobby’s Last Crusade – about Robert F. Kennedy, brother and adviser to a President and junior Senator from New York, written and performed by David Arrow, directed by Eric Nightengale, will follow in June and July. For the season’s third production in August, Penguin will present the world premiere of The Sabbath Girl – a contemporary romantic comedy with heart, by Cary Gitter, directed by Joe Brancato. A Gentleman’s Guide to Grooming for Special Occasions

Preparing for a special occasion takes time. Whether it’s for your wedding, prom, graduation or networking event, many spend hours perfecting their hair and choosing the ideal outfit. Before you stress, the team at D.S.Z. Barbers Inc. advises that all you need is some time and guidance. By breaking down your grooming routine into a manageable list, you can streamline the preparation, and it should start long before the big day.

Steve Zuccato owner of D.S.Z. Barbers Inc in Nyack, (845) 348-1500

Clear up your complexion: If the condition of your skin is a concern, then there’s no better time to find a solution. Whether you’re suffering from excess dryness or a breakout, start treating the situation in advance by using products that target your specific concerns. Perfect your hair: Keep your style classic and your color natural. Get a haircut a week before the event and then get a cleanup the morning of the occasion. Seek the services of a Master Barber at a high-end barbershop. Tell the barber you’re getting a haircut for a special event so they pay extra attention to detail. Ask them to show you how to style your hair properly and which products to use.

Shave or groom your facial hair: A smooth, irritation-free shave is an absolute essential for your event. Use only top quality products and tools to prevent any shaving hiccups. Take your time, wash your face with warm water and rinse your blade throughout. Always shave with the direction of hair growth and avoid shaving against the grain. If a beard is part of your normal look, keep it. Just ensure it is clean and neat: a properly styled beard will make you look well-groomed. Finish your look: Coordinate your shoes, belt and watch so they match in color and style. Your hands can be a lasting impression so always opt for a buffed manicure. Special occasions deserve a fragrance that suits the moment. Try something that contains notes you favor, whether it’s woodsy, musky or fresh.

It’s Wedding Season! A special way to make sure your wedding party looks great is to book a group appointment at a classic barbershop, like D.S.Z. Barbers Inc. in Nyack, NY. A professional haircut and shave is a special way to kick off your wedding day and makes an awesome gift for the groomsmen. Call 845-348-1500 for more information. R RivertownMagazine.com

FRANK FUCHS CONSTRUCTION A LEGEND IN RENOVATION, RESTORATION AND ADDITIONS

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM RILEY

It’s spring time and your thoughts are focused on kitchen and bathroom renovation and replacing your deck, whose wood planking has taken a beating from weather and sun. For 25 years, Frank Fuchs and his team have been turning home dreams into reality. Thousands of happy homeowners give Frank Fuchs kudos and praise for the work he has done building kitchens, bathrooms and renovating water-damaged homes. Maybe you have bought an historic home and work needs to be done to restore it to its gloried past. The home may be from the 17th, 18th or 19th Century. Who is the first person to call? Frank Fuchs, of course! Nine out of ten historic homeowners call Frank Fuchs Construction. Frank said, “When restoring older homes or historic sites, we replicate wood and materials for Victorian homes and do plaster repair. We also do the windows,

doors, wood siding and all phases of carpentry, painting and staining of the entire house. We try to stay within the context of the house and preserve the original character of the home we work on. We do it all, we’ve renovated and restored old barns into art studios and we’ve finished basements. If your home is suffering from water damage or a rotting foundation my team will come up with the right solution for you. People like us because we do the job right the first time and within your budget.”

For people who love to live in old houses and need a new deck, the first person you call is Frank Fuchs because he pays attention to detail. He builds decks out of Trek, a composite, and Azek, a vinyl. Frank explained: “They last long: the underneath is made out of pressure treated lumber, and all the framing is pressure-treated. PEST SHIELD’S NEW WILDLIFE DIVISION SETS COUNTY STANDARD FOR PEST CONTROL

Barry Stangel (center) is a renowned Pest Management Instructor who works for New York State and currently is the President of The Pest Management Consulting & Training Center.

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM RILEY

Over the years, Pest Shield has evolved to provide more services that customers need. “We’ve noticed that

The Stangel family is no stranger to handling all kinds of unwanted critters. Since 1932, they have been the authority on pest management in Rockland County and the surrounding area.

climate change and hurricanes have caused animals to be displaced, so we are offering services that are all about exclusion and prevention,” said Laura. “Our technicians seal small openings around the house so mice and other small rodents can’t get in. They screen attic vents and make sure chimney caps are in place.”

“My grandfather started the business in 1932,” explained Laura Stangel. “Then my father, Barry Stangel, took over in the 60’s. He is currently the President of the Pest Management Consulting and Training Center located in our facility in Suffern, helping Rockland County, New York City and New York State in many capacities because of his wide-ranging knowledge of pest management. Today my mom, Lucile, and I own Pest Shield.”

Laura offers some Spring tips to keep your home pestfree: “Overhanging tree branches should not touch the house because that’s how raccoons and squirrels get up there and chew wires. Then the alarm doesn’t work and the potential for fires increases. Dryer vent flaps have to be maintained because birds often find refuge there. We believe with vacuuming, caulking and sealing you can keep a home pest-free.”

If you are moving into a new home, call Pest Shield’s new Wildlife Division: “Since introducing our new Wildlife Division, we’ve been getting many calls, especially when a house is unoccupied and a new owner is set to come in. Uninvited animal guests often take refuge,” said Laura. “We do beaver trapping for the county when asked. Possums, skunks and raccoons are trapped also. We also do snake repelling, especially in Piermont and Tuxedo. We make every effort to bring them to a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. We treat bats according to state rules.”

borne diseases. Use an organic spray 2-3 days before the event for ticks and mosquitoes if you are having an outdoor party or special occasion.”

“Unlike other pest control businesses in the county, we are a family business that has been operating continuously for 87 years. When you call, you get the attention you deserve. All our technicians are licensed and certified by the state. We don’t offer a one-size-fits all. We customize based on the needs of the customer. Because we take a green approach, we ask our customers to bring us a sample of the insect invading their home, then we can customize our treatment. Our technicians do a visual inspection of your entire property and discuss it with you. Our motto is ‘Evict the Pest Not Your Family’,” said Laura.

Pest Shield offers warranties, contract programs and free estimates, and covers both New York and New Jersey. Let Pest Shield take care of those unwanted guests so you can enjoy your home. R

Pest Shield is 100% green around families, young children, pets and the environment. “With the concerns about the demise of bees, we treat directly to the nest. New York State is starting to ban the use of spraying liquid pesticides because there has been evidence that landscapers using them causes colony collapse, and we need bees for pollination,” said Laura.

MAGIC, GAMES, PUZ ZLES, ILLUSIONS, HACKS & SCAMS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PU RPOSES ONLY!

Many years ago, I used to give private lessons to people who wanted to learn magic. The first magic trick I taught novices was this devious scam that looked like magic. It was very easy to do and got amazing reactions from their friends. It also taught a lesson about deception. You see, the hardest part about doing magic well, is not to feel guilty when you deceive people. It is based on an old idea whose creator is lost to history. The secret lies in the fact that people do not pay attention or remember things that are not specifically pointed out to them. So, let’s begin. I named my version: Nine To Six.

Meir Yedid is an award-winning magician and writer. He is also the CEO of MyMagic and Gambling Incorporated. You can reach him at: MeirYedid.com

HOW TO PERFORM NINE TO SIX

LOCAL

/

127

What your friends think they see:

What really happens:

Using a deck of cards, you remove the Nine of Spades and the Six of Clubs. You then have your friend lose the two cards into the deck. As if by magic the cards now appear on top.

Since the black nines and sixes look similar, your friends will not notice that the nine and six that appear on top of the deck are different than the ones lost in the deck.

TO START You will need a deck of cards with a black six and a black nine on top. To make it easy to follow let’s assume that they are the Nine of Spades and the Six of Clubs.

STEP 1 While your friends are watching, remove the other black nine and six (Nine of Clubs and Six of Spades) and place them face down on the table.

STEP 2 Have your friend cut the deck into three piles. You will need to know which pile has the other nine and six on top as the deck is cut. STEP 3 Pick up the nine and six from the table as you casually show them and place one card on top of each of the two piles that were not the top packet. Re-assemble the deck so the original top packet with the nine and six ends up on top of the deck.

STEP 4 Everything is now ready for the big reveal. Recap that the Nine of Spades and the Six of Clubs are lost in the deck. Notice that this is the first time you will mention the suites of the cards and the first time you will be lying to your friends.

STEP 5 Now for the magic: Wave your hand over the deck with a magical gesture and explain that the Nine of Spades and the Six of Clubs have just jumped to the top of the deck. Let your friends look at the top two cards and absorb the magic. Try it‌ You will like it. R

WED, MAY 29 – 8 PM AT NYACK CENTER COUSIN BOBBY Jonathan Demme’s film may be primarily about his cousin Robert Castle, an Episcopalian priest who served in a Harlem church, but it is also a family reunion. While profiling Cousin Bobby and his mission to help the poor and dispossessed, it provides interesting insights into Jonathan Demme’s family, his childhood, and the origins of the social values that are the hallmarks of every “film by Jonathan Demme.” Discussion after the film with Rev. Dr. Mary Foulke, from Robert Castle’s St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, and producer Ed Saxon. “A home movie of sorts, in which the social involvement of Cousin Bobby is set against a backdrop of faded photographs, old family memories and reunions, and the wonderment we all feel when we meet someone we were friends with long ago, and see what has become of them.”—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times R

ASK THE LENDER

SCOTT FORMAN DIVISIONAL VICE PRESIDENT “WE’RE GETTING MARRIED AND WANT TO BUY A HOUSE?” FINDING THE RIGHT AGENT FOR YOU! Finding the right real estate agent is just as important as working with the right lender. With so many real estate agents out there, how do you choose? Here are 7 important tips that will help you make the right choice: 1. Find out how experienced and active the agent is. Gauge their knowledge of the area, a great way to do this is by reviewing their current listings.

Scott Forman is a Divisional President for CrossCountry Mortgage, Inc., managing a lending group of 40+ locations nationwide. Forman grew up in Rockland County and currently resides

2. Set expectations on communication. This should be where you both set expectations for how often you should be updated and the best method of communication. If your agent is working with a high volume of clients, do they have additional licensed team members who can help throughout the process? 3. Talk with agents’ recent clients. Do your research, read reviews from past clients. Experiences from previous clients will give you insight on how the journey to your new home purchase will go. 4. Make sure to check their credentials. Check for licensing and any disciplinary actions. Ask about professional awards. Select an agent with the right credentials. 5. Look for passion, conviction and honesty. Look at the agent’s work. Look at their listing materials, website, brochures and signage. Look for passion, conviction and honesty. You want your agent to tell you what it’s going to take to get your home to sell faster and for the best price. 6. Go with your gut. Your brain uses logic and emotion when making a decision. If it feels right, trust your instincts. 7. Ask your lender. If your lender has been in the business for more than 5 years, he/she will know who communicates, dedicates enough time and is a great negotiator for their clients. We send dozens of clients to only a select group of agents every month. R

Doing your homework and taking your time to select the right real estate agent for you will make all the difference in the home buying process. Send in your questions to info@formanteam.com. What Happened to Mrs. Barley on Mother’s Day? Part One of A Mother’s Day Children’s Story STORY BY ELLEN ZIEGLER

Captain Red Barley stood outside his beach cottage wondering why the kerosene lamps were out and why his wife had broken her promise to leave lights glittering in the window as a welcome home sign every Mother’s Day. He sighed, stroked his shapely red beard, ignoring the clutter in his heart as he pushed through the sand with the heavy, black boots he wore pulled over the bottoms of his belted black trousers. Resting his hand on the jewel-handled sword hanging in a leather scabbard from a black sash belting his red greatcoat, he swallowed. Inside Captain Red Barley’s huge chest, pressed the weight of confusion and disappointment. Why was the cottage dark? Where were his wife and children? He readied himself for trouble, trying not to picture his family as victims of the recent pirate attacks from the sea close to his home on the English shoreline. A seagull, torn from sleep, circled the captain’s head and shrieked as the tall red-haired man approached the carved wooden door to his home, opening it with his large metal key and pausing in the silence, which was more frightening than the sounds of attack.

he waited for the call to action inside his chest. In a fight, he was usually the first to strike. On his brigantine, he walked the two decks like a racer with an itch and nothing escaped his eyes - stowaways, a member of the Queen’s navy, even a shark flapping its tail below deck instead of resting in peace, triggered his love of a good fight. But this? His family missing? Every hand-drawn Mother’s Day card hanging on the walls felt like a sword blade piercing his chest. He searched the house for a note, but found the tabletops empty. A surge of panic, and then the deepest loss he could imagine, fired his heart. He drew a few deep breaths and steeled his body like a rabid dog poised to attack. End of Part One R

Contest Questions Will there be a fight between Captain Barley and an unknown villain? Will the Captain discover the whereabouts of his family?

“Meg?” he called, looking through the small rooms on the ground floor. His teenage daughter did not answer. “Peg? Greg?” he shouted into the dark void for signs of his younger daughter and son.

Where will he go next to fulfill his duties: set sail to his wife’s family in Scotland, or deliver cargo to a new island discovered by Christopher Columbus?

Holding his breath, he tiptoed up the creaking wooden staircase to see if his wife could be sleeping. “Deidre?” Captain Barley said to the large canopied bed that had held their sleeping forms for over thirty years.

PLEASE REPLY TO info@rivertownmag.com with subject line MOTHER’S DAY MYSTERY. We will publish the best responses in the August “Back to School” issue of Rivertown Magazine. We will select one random entrant to win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

“Oh dear,” he said to the stale air that usually smelled like the ocean and old wood. Çollapsing into his armchair, his mind spinning, his thoughts as cold as an iceberg,
