VICOLO ITALIAN RESTAURANT CELEBRATES VALENTINE’S DAY with entertainment and flowers

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM RILEY

Are you looking for a great place to bring your family or a loved one for a special dining experience on Valentine’s Day? At Vicolo, your special lady will be treated like a Queen and given a rose in her honor. Rocklanders and people from Bergen County are flocking to Vicolo, the fine Italian restaurant tucked into the popular Bi-State Shopping Center in Old Tappan, New Jersey. Whether your tastes are traditional or avant-garde, Vicolo’s palate-pleasing lunches and dinners will have you singing its praises. At a recent visit at this popular restaurant, the Kousoulas Family were dining with their granddaughters and came over to owner Beny Qosaj and said, “The food here is wonderfully prepared, and the service is impeccable. That’s why I come here so often. Thank you for a memorable dining experience.” Vicolo Ristorante has the warmth, charm and friendliness of your favorite neighborhood spot. For eight years, it has delighted diners of all ages, families, romantic couples and music lovers especially on weekends. Joe, a retired lawyer said, “I love Vicolo because the food is fabulous and because Neil Dankman’s crowd-pleasing singing voice sounds similar to Bobby Darin, Elvis, Sinatra and Willie Nelson.” Interior of Vicolo Ristorante

Many newspapers and magazines have written articles extolling the cuisine, ambiance and service at Vicolo. Here is what Zagat said, “The many specialties continue to be creatively presented. Their Lobster and

With so many options on the menu, it is hard to choose what to order. Beny recommends ORATA, pan-seared fish, over arugula, balsamic truffle oil and wine sauce. Another favorite is homemade tagliaolini norma which is eggplant, fresh tomatoes, basil and ricotta cheese. People love Vicolo’s rack of lamb, a mustard and herb-crusted rack of lamb. Over the years the wine industry in New Mexico declined due to floods in the Rio Grande, the extreme cold and then the Prohibition era, which just about wiped out winemaking. Just a few wineries remained in operation open for the production of sacramental wines. Winemaking in New Mexico suffered for many years even after the repeal of Prohibition, and in 1978 the government stepped in and started a program to encourage the winemakers to plant French hybrids. Now there are over 60 wineries in the state.

LaViňa winery is the oldest continuously operated winery founded in 1977. La Chiripada winery, a favorite of ours, is the oldest continuously family-run winery in the state, also since 1977. It is a small family winery located 50 miles north of Sante Fe. There are three AVA’s in New Mexico, Mesilla Valley, Middle Rio Grande Valley and Mimbres. Mesilla Valley is dry and hot and a portion lies in the state of Texas. They make a lot of red wines! Middle Watershed Rio Grande is large, 278,000 + acres, running from Sante Fe to south of Albuquerque. It has warm days and cool nights. The students of New Mexico State University study viticulture here. Mimbres is in the SW by Silver City. Vines are planted high above the Mimbres River at 4,000 – 6,000 feet. It is so desert-like that irrigation is a must. One of our favorite American sparklers comes from New Mexico outside of Albuquerque. Gruet was founded in 1984 by a French family. At age 7, Laurent Gruet remembers watching his father Gilbert working at the family winery Gruet et Fils in Bethon, France. It wasn’t long before Laurent himself began washing bottles, cleaning tanks, bottling and of course tasting. After years of experience and hard work he crafted his first bubbly for the Champagne house of Gruet et Fils in 1981 in Bethon, France. In the early 1980’s Laurent’s father Gilbert Gruet was searching the SW corner of the US to plant vineyards. He had connections to a group of Europeans who had already planted vines in New Mexico. Upon examining the conditions of the area which included sandy, loamy soil and the diurnal swings of temperature which are crucial to maintaining the requisite grape acidity, he decided to invest in property. In 1984 Laurent and his sister Nathalie moved to Albuquerque with their parents and started the Gruet winery. Their first public release was 1989. Their bubblies are in the French Method Champenoise, which has more body and flavor. The goal is for their wines to

The Rivertowns, the Nyacks. A welcoming community filled with

history and perfect for today’s family and active lifestyle. 29 Division in South Nyack is a quintessential example of a Queen Anne Victorian of that period and style. Built in 1894 by notable architects Marshall and Henry Emery for Charles and Harriet McElroy and his family. Charles McElroy was a respected builder and Mayor of South Nyack in the early 1900s, where he led the dedication of the Nyack “Carnegie” library. His portrait can be seen in the Nyack library and in a family treasured lithograph that hangs in 29 Division today and will remain in the home to be handed down to its new owners. Many people have admired Nyack and its very distinctive “look” – no other Rivertown has quite the same swagger, quite the same panache – and one of the major reasons is the Architectural Firm of Marshall and Henry Emery. By designing and building so many Nyack structures such as the YMCA, the Carnegie Library, St. Ann’s Church, St. Paul’s Church, the Emery brothers basically defined the “Nyack Style”. This picture-perfect Queen Anne Victorian represents the epitome of “The Nyack House”.

The current owners are only the third family to live in the home. They have lovingly restored this Grande Lady to its vintage Emery style, while

The fully fenced rear yard contains another unique feature: the Sears & Roebuck garage with barn doors, one of the few remaining Sears structures in the county. South Nyack offers an urban lifestyle in a picturesque suburban setting, filled with shops, multi-cultural restaurants, community activities and enough cultural events to meet anyone’s interest. Nestled atop Clausland Mountain, only 25 minutes north of New York City, overlooking the Hudson River, magical gardens and spec-

imen plantings, sits a zen like sanctuary, perfect for a weekend getaway or year-round blissfulness. This “Riverview Retreat” comes with a double lot, totaling .89 of an acre, approved and buildable, included in the sale price. Originally built in 1883 with impressive renovations in 2017, this 4 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom farmhouse mixes the best of old world charm and modern luxury with plenty of natural light and sweeping views throughout. The oversized “treehouse style” deck is perfect for entertaining guests during the summer as you gaze out to the Hudson River. Make your way from the deck into the chef’s eat-in kitchen, complete with granite counters and Viking range, more than ideal for large gatherings of friends and family. Through the kitchen rests a cozy family room with wood burning stove, custom built-in bookshelves and French doors that lead to gardens and a fenced in yard. One of the most impressive rooms on the main floor, with access to the deck, is a magnificent vaulted living room with walls of glass that take advantage of the surrounding views, like a perpetual mural that changes by the season. Wide wooden plank floors in the dining room are complimented by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the natural landscapes of the mountaintop home. The upper level boasts a master bedroom, guest room and full bathroom that overlooks nature’s greatness. A finished lower level with an exposed stone façade to the original

reply is simple: “If you have a dollar, you have an estate. Who do you want to get it when you’re gone?” Like most people, you don’t realize how much of an impact you have made on others, during your lifetime and once you’re gone. An act of kindness goes a long way for a long time. Take your closet for example: it’s probably stuffed with clothes you’ve not worn in years, yet there are people who desperately need those same clothes. While the tax deduction may or may not be applicable to you, helping others in need is far more important than the memories. They never leave you regardless of the disposition of the articles. Legacy Planning is the act of planning how you choose your wealth to be distributed or utilized by others once you are gone. It’s a plan to manage your wealth while you are alive, with a clear plan or path to how your wealth is to be distributed to the best advantage in your eyes. Certainly, the first utilization of your wealth is for you to have a safe and secure retirement. The plan, however, is to determine how you would like it distributed after you’re done with it. With proper planning, you can help multiple people with the same dollars. Pass it through to multiple generations. Help an entity with the principle eventually going to your kids or grandkids. The possibilities are endless: I always say if it’s legal and it’s kind, go for it! It’s not always about money and stuff: I’ve done planning where birthday cards and birthday presents continued long after the grantor was gone. You can create a scholarship for your alma mater with as little as a thousand dollars. Legacy planning creates a legacy for you to be remembered for the loving, giving and kind person you tried to be, and would like to be remembered for. I see legacy planning as a long-term fun plan…you are limited only by your imagination and your desire to help others. The key here is to do your planning when you are are alive, of sound mind, and in a place to help others.

I always felt tired, and often did not feel well. I did not exercise and I ate a lot of junk food and fast food. I knew I had to make a change. “I started to exercise and took baby steps to better my nutrition. Shortly thereafter I began to lose weight and feel less tired. I continued to exercise regularly and exercise became something I loved to do. I lost weight, felt better, and my confidence soared. This led me to become a certified personal trainer and a small group fitness instructor.

“I noticed that people with a personal trainer were able to lose weight quickly. This was because their trainers offered accountability and support. I also noticed that those who took small group classes lost weight even faster since they not only had the support from the instructor, but they also received it from others in the class. “I soon found Fit Body Boot Camp in Stony Point and the Unstoppable Fitness Formula. My dedication to changing the lives of others is perfectly in line with my experiences and the services I provide, which combines both the benefits of having a personal trainer and the extra support of a small group setting. We’ve transformed hundreds of people’s lives and we now offer our latest program: Fit Body Forever, designed specifically for people age 55+.” Stephanie: “Over seven years ago I embarked on my own fitness journey. I was out of shape, overweight, and my diet was a mix of healthy and unhealthy foods. I hired a personal trainer at my local gym who pushed me to my limits. I was horrified when I couldn’t do some basic exercises without feeling like I was going to die. I was angry but I didn’t let this discourage me; instead it fueled my fire. I began doing boot camp style workouts…high intensity cardio with resistance training and soon the pounds started coming off. I was losing fat and gaining muscle and people began to notice. I truly felt amazing and set many goals for myself. I became so in love with what I was accomplishing and realized I wanted to eventually have a career in fitness. Fit Body Boot Camp’s unwavering support and genuine concern for helping people get fit and healthy was all I needed to know that this was for me.” Sign up for a FREE class today (at either Stony Point or Orangeburg) to see their positive, welcoming high-energy community in action. And, what’s more, your travel agent will be available to you 24-7 in case of an emergency or an unexpected change in plans. That is, of course, if your travel agents happen to be Linda and Allan Conoval, Cruise Planners/American Express Travel Representatives. “It’s totally true,” says Allan. “We are available 24-7. We know where our clients are on each leg of their vacations. And, what if something happens to go wrong— like a missed flight or cancellation, unexpected weather-related problem or even a lost passport? “We take care of it all,” adds Linda. “Why should you bother having to take precious time out of your vacation to rebook flights, arrange transportation or search for a new hotel? RESIDENTS AT THE PROMENADE AT CHESTNUT RIDGE LIVE A VIBRANT LIFE STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM RILEY

There’s lot of longevity in both the residents and the staff at

Promenade at Chestnut Ridge, located at 168 Red Schoolhouse Road in Chestnut Ridge. The oldest resident is over 103 and many of the staff have been there for decades. Debbie Corwin, the Director of

Community Relations for the past 10 years said, “My Mom is almost 95, and she has been here 8 years now. It’s such a blessing having her as a resident, and I have peace of mind knowing she’s well taken care of by our excellent staff. I never worry about her well-being when I’m on vacation.” Promenade at Chestnut Ridge offers a warm and inviting community where seniors can live a vibrant life, filled with rich experiences from morning to night. Even when it’s cold and snowy outside, residents are always able to enjoy a variety of activities. When I visited Promenade in late December, I noticed all the wonderful holiday programs listed on one of their activities boards. That particular day, an assembled group of seniors were enjoying the live performance of The Music Makers. Joan Mertens, a Promenade resident who was swaying to the music said, “I’ve been here for 4 years now, and I love it. There’s so much

to do.” “It’s a warm, wonderful senior living community. The relationships between the residents and the staff are based upon mutual respect and in some cases decades of friendship,” said Executive Director Gail Spencer, who has been working at Promenade at Chestnut Ridge for more than 11 years. Caring for seniors is a way of life at Promenade, regardless of their financial situation. “Residents who need assistance with activities of daily living are so fortunate to be able to live here even when their assets have been depleted. Because we have beds allocated for people who qualify for community Medicaid, they can continue to receive the help they need without worrying about how to pay for it,” says Corwin. “It’s a wonderful feeling knowing our residents don’t have to move elsewhere because of financial changes. It takes a tremendous burden off their families.”

A community room at Promenade offers ample room to socialize.

“Sometimes I get calls from family members of residents living at other assisted living facilities in the area that don’t have Medicaid beds. They are concerned about what will happen when their funds run out. We’ve actually been able to help quite a few people coming from other senior living environments. We pride ourselves on helping as many seniors in need of assistance as possible,” says Corwin.

Clinton and Bush. People to People delivers food to over 4,000 individuals and 1,400 low-income families. Every year they disburse more than 1 million dollars worth of food to needy people in Rockland County. “Because of the high cost of living in Rockland County, many seniors are recipients of the services offered by People to People. After paying their taxes and bills they often need help in providing food for themselves.” says Diane. “We help low income Rocklanders by providing satellite centers at the Nyack Center, Haverstraw, Martin Luther King Center, Jawonio and Rockland Community College (RCC), where a number of students are low-income.” People to People Inc. has been rated 4 Stars by Charity Navigator for being prudent about expenses and getting the most from what they receive. “We are always looking for volunteers, non-perishable food, fruits, frozen foods and of course donations. The donation of money helps the most because of our contacts with vendors who give discounts. Businesses like Red Lobster, Cheesecake Factory and BJ’s are generous donators of foodstuff and meats,” says Diane. This September 2019, People to People will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary. Congratulations, Diane, for being Rivertown Magazine’s “Hero of the Month” for February 2019. Rockland County thanks you and the Board of Directors of People to People for your service and caring to low-income Rocklanders. If you would like to volunteer your time or give a donation to People to People, please call 845-623-4900 extension 208 and ask for Guadalupe Fishman. Frank’s Hints for the Coming Spring Season

If you are thinking of putting your home on the market this Spring and while the weather is still a little chilly, you should be reaching out to the contractors for any work you are intending to do. If you wait too long, you are not going to find someone who is available. Starting with the outside of your home – look around. Have you lost any shrubbery? Are any branches down? This is a good time to have them removed and your yard cleaned up. And the landscapers are not as busy as they will be in a matter of weeks. Does your driveway need to be repaved or resealed? Does your home need the trim painted or perhaps the entire house? In general, just take a good look around and see your house as a buyer would in relation to “curb appeal”. This is also a good time to spruce up the interior of your home; touch ups, painting, floor refinishing and decluttering. 12/31/19

Remember if you are going to work with any tradesmen, this is the best time to hire them.

In these environmentally sensitive times, decks and panels from the old bridge were recycled and donated to eight upstate counties who had requested them and also to New York City. West of the Hudson River, the 680,000 residents of Rockland and Orange County currently have very limited Mass Transit to New York City via NJ Transit’s Port Jervis Line and Pascack Valley Line commuter rail service or Coach USA’s Rockland Coaches bus service. The Bridge Plan includes an objective merely stating, “Providing a crossing that does not preclude future trans-Hudson transit services.” The Bridge was structurally built for expansion with BRT and/ or commuter rail at a later date. The existing Tarrytown station of the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line is located about 2,000 feet from the new bridge’s eastern landing. Responding to widespread concerns about the lack of new public transit service, bridge planners agreed only to build one “dedicated express bus lane” for use during rush hour.
