Home Alone: Last month my wife had to go down to Florida on business. She was going to be away for a week. So, as comparative newly-weds, that was a big deal. We’ve never really been apart for more than about 24 hours. Candice spent several days preparing healthy foods for me to eat while she was away. I reassured her I’d be fine. But I wasn’t really sure. However I knew that there were some things I could do to amuse myself. I could time travel back to my bachelor days, for example.. I could see all those violent things on TV that are created purely for neanderthal men. So on the first night, I sat down and ordered up some Quentin Tarantino bloodfest from my cable company. Then I raided the fridge and lined up a couple of baked apples. Sat down in front of the tube. And the movie was horrible. People being decapitated, blood everywhere. Whole scenes were in Japanese – which was only slightly less incomprehensible than the scenes in English. Reviewers said it was a work of genius. It seemed to me like self-indulgent claptrap. I switched off after an hour and turned on Modern Family. The next night I watched a Mixed Martial Arts fight. It was less violent and more fun than Tarantino. But I lost interest. Where was my wife? I called her. She was out to dinner with her best friend. She was in Florida where it was 78 degrees. I was in Rockland County freezing my buns off in 28 degree weather. I was Home Alone feeling like Macaulay Culkin. Maybe I should go play with my after-shave and scream into the mirror like he did. Maybe I should rearrange my sock drawer. But I don’t have a sock drawer. Life alone is boring. Life alone is only for bachelors. Hurry home my wonderful wife!

How are husbands like lawn mowers? They’re hard to get started, they emit

noxious odors, and half the time they don’t work. Guy Talk: As the New Year ends, I’d like to give you a list of why it’s great to be a guy: • Your last name stays put. • The garage is all yours. • Wedding plans take care of themselves. • Chocolate is just another snack. • Car mechanics tell you the truth. • You don’t give a rat’s ass if someone notices your new haircut. • Same work ... more pay. • Wrinkles add character. • People never stare at your chest when you’re talking to them. • The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. • New shoes don’t cut, blister, or mangle your feet. • Your pals can be trusted never to trap you with: “So, notice anything different?” • Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. • A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. • If someone forgets to invite you to something, he or she can still be your friend. • Your underwear is $8.95 for a threepack. • If you are 34 and single, nobody notices. • Everything on your face stays its original colour. • Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. • You don’t mooch off other’s desserts. • You can drop by to see a friend without having to bring a little gift. • You’re not expected to know the names of more than five colours. What’s the best way to force a man to do sit ups? Put the remote control between his toes.

Lakay - moving documentary about Haiti earthquake - gets special charity screening in Rockland After the 2010 earthquake, Haiti was left in ruins - towns were destroyed and families were displaced. A moving new feature documentary – to be screened this month in Rockland County - Lakay, tells the story of two brothers, Alexius and Romeo, who go on a mission to locate and find their loved ones. Drawn back to Haiti by the devastation, these filmmakers reveal the tragedy caused by this natural disaster from an intimate and personal perspective. The film has brought acclaim around the world and next month it will be a special featured presentation by Rivertown Film. The director Tirf Alexius says: “I never thought that I would work on a project that would put so much of myself out there. I wanted to do a film that explored what it

meatn to be American as well as Haitian and not be mutually exclusive. “Haiti is more than just devastation. It has an innate beauty, although rarely shown, and I sought to capture its vibrancy.” He added: “Lakay isn’t just about capturing history. It’s about family - my family. I’ve learned so much about myself and my Haitian brothers and sister. “It captures how even in the face of tragedy we find moments of inspiration and laughter - ways to strike a balance between suffering and joyh. To figure it all out, sometimes you just need to go home!” Lakay will be featured by Rivertown Film on January 16 at the Performing Arts Theater, 145 College Rd., Suffern. 6:30PM7:30PM Networking and Reception

Deciding when to claim Social Security After paying into Social Security for the last 40+ years 2015 may be the year that you reach age 62 and are eligible to start to receive your SS benefits. Should you start now or wait until later? That is the question that we all have to answer at some point. You have options and there are several strategies. For those who will rely heavily on SS to pay living expenses they have little choice but to claim benefits as soon as possible. But those with enough savings and/or other resources can delay their claim so to hopefully increase their life-time SS benefits. For many, it makes sense to retire on one date, and to claim Social Security at a later date. Life Expectancy – Key Factor The key factor in deciding when to claim benefits is life expectancy. The greater one’s life expectancy the greater the benefit of delaying claims for SS benefits. Statistically, the life expectancy for a 62 year old male is 81 years (84 – female). Delayed SS claims will require greater life expectancy so to both recover forgone benefits and to eventually surpass the cumulative benefits of those who claimed prior to reaching full retirement age (FRA). Planning For Singles Lets look at an example, assume that John & Bill are both the exact same age and have the exact same earnings history. John claims a reduced SS benefit at age 62. His payment will be 75% of the full benefit available to him if he had waited until FRA. Bill waits until his FRA of 66 to claim his full retirement benefit. At the time that Bill makes his claim John will already have collected 4 full years of his reduced benefit. Since he waited until FRA, Bill will start to collect his full benefit which will be 25% higher than John’s reduced benefit. It will take Bill approximately 12 years to catch up to John’s cumulative benefit. So, at age 78 Bill will have collected the same cumulative amount as John and from that point forward Bill’s cumulative benefit will continue to grow at a faster rate than John’s. Generally, if a person waits until age 66 (FRA) to claim SS he will collect more lifetime benefits only if he lives past age 78, but less benefits if he does not. (Your FRA may vary and will impact this result). Planning For Married Couples For couples the choices are more complex because each spouse’s timing can af-

24

fect the other’s benefits. Waiting to claim can benefit couples even more since couples are eligible for spousal and/or survivor benefits. This is when one spouse can receive a greater benefit by tapping into the other spouse’s earnings record in addition to their own earned benefits. With a little planning, and a little luck, a couple can realize as much as $150,000 in additional benefits beyond the basic benefits over a lifetime. Delayed Benefits SS claims past FRA age will increase available benefits at a rate of 8% per year. That’s a nice return and it is available to anyone who delays collecting SS benefits beyond FRA. The Claim and Suspend Strategy The claim and suspend strategy allows a spouse to begin receiving SS spousal benefits immediately while increasing the future benefits of the other spouse. Spousal benefits are only available to spouse A if spouse B claims benefits first. To achieve the best result, the working, or higher earning spouse, will claim full benefits when he reaches FRA and then immediately suspend those benefits. This suspension will allow that spouse’s benefits to realize the 8% per year increase that is awarded to those who delay benefits beyond FRA and it also allows the nonworking, or lower earning spouse to claim spousal benefits immediately. Optimum Choice for Healthy Singles The best time for a single male in good health to claim his SS benefits is age 69 (70 – female). According to statistics, considering life expectancy and the 8% return on delayed benefits, life-time cumulative benefits collected after age 68 will exceed lifetime cumulative benefits that start at any

other time. (Your FRA may vary and will impact this result). Optimum Choice for Healthy Married Couples For two income couples, the best strategy is for each spouse to claim benefits at age 70. In the interim, the primary earner can claim and suspend benefits while the lower earner claims spousal benefits at FRA and then switches to his own benefit at age 70. This is a “win-win” if you can afford to delay benefits and you are fortunate enough to live a least as long as your life expectancy. Changing Your Mind SS decisions are not written in stone. Generally, you may submit an application to request a withdrawal of your original SS application at any time. Upon your repayment of all cumulative benefits received up until that date, your SS will be terminated and you are free to start the process again using any strategy that you choose. Summary 1. Financial resources available may dictate or allow for SS claim options; 2. Consider overall health and life expectancy when making SS decisions; 3. Unmarried people are generally best to wait until age 69 or 70 to claim their SS benefits; 4. A claim and suspend strategy is often the best approach for married couples; 5. Waiting until age 70 to claim can boost a couple’s expected lifetime benefit by over 20%. Getting Help At the Social Security Administration web site, www.ssa.gov, there is a wealth of information regarding the above topics. You can also download your earnings history and an estimate of your future monthly benefits at various ages. Because your individual situation is unique, ask your CPA how you can maximize your SS benefits so you can put more money in your pocket during your retirement. Joseph A. Question: I just received a letter in the mail telling me if I had a problem with my mortgage, and have not paid it in 30 days, I should not pay it and the bank will forgive the debt. Is this too good to be true. Answer: You got it - It is too good to be true. Be aware in this market and at this time of year, every type of organization/ people are looking to make a quick buck. I am sure that the letter said, “for a nominal fee” that this certified organization would help you (I doubt it). Don’t fall for any of this. If you are having difficulties with your mortgage payment, I would recommend that you call the following directly i.e. the bank you have your mortgage with, your attorney, your accountant, a short sale specialist before you sign on the dotted line make sure that this is a legitimate organization. Good Luck

is the buyers set the value of a home at any given point in time. Now or years from now, if you sell your home on the open market with a good realtors guidance and a solid marketing plan, you will receive full value. On the other hand, keep in mind,

that you will be buying your next home in the same market you are selling in. If you wait for home values to soar before you sell, you will be paying a premium on any property. Don’t put life on hold - Enjoy your retirement.

Question: My wife and I have been looking forward to retiring in the next few years...The opportunity to move to a warmer climate has unexpectedly come up for me to take an early retirement from my job. The package is very attractive to my wife and I. My only regret is now is not a very good time to sell our home and we cannot get what we feel our house is worth in this market. How long should I wait to sell? Answer: Who said you will not get what your home is worth? The truth

Owner Qi Zhao has the answer. “It is now possible to reshape the body and lose inches with long lasting, scientific results,” she told us. “Men and women who have stubborn fat such as love handles or who wish to sculpt certain areas of their body should come to my treatment Center. “We are a state-of-the-art facility celebrating our 6th anniversary and I’ve invested in a revolutionary new piece of equipment called the Cellu M6 Integra 2 by LPG. We’ll help you experience the amazing results and benefits of Lipomassage. “Despite regular exercise and the most stringent of diets, the body can store fat in certain areas. It causes progressive dimpling or cottage cheese appearance of the skin. “Cellu M^ breaks down fat cells, it is comfortable, faster, more powerful and has no side effects. It’s a natural, non-invasive solution. You can reshape your body without downtime and lose inches-with long

32

lasting scientifically proven results. Lipomassage is efficient in combating cellulite, bra folds, sagging arms, flabby bellies, flabby buttocks, fatty knees, flabby thighs and many other areas. Qi also teaches people how to exercise and eat healthy. When cellulite is removed,

you decrease belly bulge, tighten flabby arms, lift sagging buttocks and restore natural body curves. It is all done without lasers or radiation and it is FDA approved. It is a new year, change your lifestyle, choose the healthy way. It feels good and it works good. It brings collagen back to the skin. Many top movie stars are using Lipomassage. Qi gets many repeats and referrals. Even skinny people say “she makes beautiful curves.” Qi Zhao has undergone extensive train-

ing and certification in body sculpting and cellulite removal. Studies have shown that fat breakdown is increased by more than 70% after 12 cellulite sessions. An average session last 35 minutes. Lipomassage is a technique that evolved in France from a company called Endomologie. It offers a scientifically proven solution for areas of fat retention, cellulite and loose skin. Qi is busier than ever and sometimes she works late into the evening helping

people who have just gotten off work. Her rates are very affordable. “About 90% of women are affected by cellulite after they reach puberty. Crystal Run Healthcare expands to Rockland County

Crystal Run Healthcare is a premier multi-specialty group medical practice with over 40 specialties, 300+ providers and more than 20 locations throughout Orange, Sullivan, and Rockland counties, as well as New York City and Northvale, NJ. Until recently, Crystal Run Healthcare was most known for the high quality care they provided in Orange County but now are bringing that same comprehensive, coordinated model of care to Rockland County and New York City. Crystal Run Healthcare is a national leader in health care transformation, offering integrated, coordinated care for all patients. So what exactly does being a part of Crystal Run’s comprehensive, coordinated care mean for you as a patient? Crystal Run’s team-based approach coordinates your medical care so that you receive the highest level of care when you need it. Having both primary care providers as well as specialists under one roof that can access your medical records through the same electronic health records (EHR) system, Crystal Run is able to standardize care, eliminate duplicative testing and communicate provider to provider about you as a patient so you are treated as a whole person instead of your individual symptoms. This means that you, the patient, no longer have to waste time bouncing from your primary care provider to a specialist each time giving your medical history, explaining what has already been done, repeating tests and trying to have physicians that do not know each other communicate collaboratively about your care. Crystal Run Healthcare takes care of that for you leaving you more time to enjoy

The reception area of Dental Arts of Rockland

Dental Arts of Rockland - home of the Blechman Smile! Story/Photos: Tom Riley Dental Arts of Rockland located in Orangeburg offers the highest quality dental care in a unique spa-like environment. Dr. Steven Blechman, DMD, told us: “We perform all phases of dentistry with an emphasis on cosmetic dentistry. We’ve been here for 20 years. “I have advanced training in cosmetic dentistry from NYU’s Aesthetic Advantage Program and the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Our Practice Philosophy is Health First, getting healthy and keeping people healthy. Our patients range in age from 5-95. “Cosmetic dentistry is something people have to want. It is never something that’s ever pushed on somebody. Those who want it realize it can be a life changing experience. It gives them a comfort level and confidence that some never had. “We have imaging technology in the office called Dentrix Imaging Module. We

46

On the Dental Spa Menu: Therapeutic Hand Paraffin Treatment take a picture of your present smile and in 10-15 minutes we show you what you could possibly look like. Dentrix takes the guess work out of it and guarantees that you’ll get the smile you desire.” Dr. Blechman added: “We work with the best dental laboratories in the country. If you look at the cover of Vogue or Cosmopolitan, the vast majority of beautiful celebrities have cosmetic dentistry or porcelain veneers. “My expertise combined with the labs

that work with those famous Hollywood stars will have you looking fabulous without paying Hollywood prices. Most smiles are enhanced in a few ways. One is with Invisalign technology where teeth are gently moved via almost invisible aligners to make them straight. “Another option is via porcelain veneers where porcelain shells are bonded over the front surface of the teeth to create an ideal smile. These shells are very thin, the thickness of a contact lens. Yet once bonded,

Dr. Steven Blechman, DMD, can give you Hollywood Star Smiles extremely durable. “These veneers can be any color you choose and are an excellent way to brighten a smile. The color does not change over time which allows for drinking coffee, red wine or smoking cigars without the risk of staining. It is not unusual for them to last a minimum of 10-15 years or longer. “Along with this, the beauty of them is that patients can care for them the same way they do their own teeth, brushing and flossing so they can maintain optimal dental health. Another advantage is the results are immediate as oppose to Invisalign which is a longer process.” Client Marlene had this to say about Dr. Blechman and the staff at Dental Arts of Rockland: “My unhealthy gums were

creating loose teeth-my mouth was in poor condition. My teeth were awful and had a very negative impact on my smile. “I heard of Dr. Bechman through word of mouth and when I met him I trusted him immediately. Some of my teeth needed to be removed but he created a partial denture that looked incredible. “The whole staff made what could have been an undesirable and awful experience a Good One. This is the most wonderful office with the most friendly, approachable staff. I recommend no one go anywhere else but Dental Arts of Rockland.” To create a more pleasant and memorable experience for you they are pleased to offer the following amenities from their Dental Spa Menu: Complementary coffee bar, relaxing herbal teas, refreshing lemon

and raspberry iced tea and during your visit experience a therapeutic hand paraffin reatment, heated herbal neck wrap, cozy dental fleece blanket and a smile evaluation among other amenities. Prominent attorney Gary Lipton focuses on three basics - personal injury, criminal law and business Story: Murray Phillips After 38 years as an attorney, there isn’t anything about the law that Gary Lipton doesn’t know. He’s highly respected in his profession and has a caring concern for his clients. He’s focused on three special areas of the law: Personal injury. Criminal law. And business. At his spacious office in Nanuet, he summed up his practice: “I personally manage this office dealing with such issues as goal setting, creating a business manual, the hiring and firing of employees, negotiating all contracts, dealing with any problems concerning the real estate leases, contracts and other business problems. I also assist clients in dealing with all service agencies and various strategic systems to maximize their businesses.” In addition to his office in Rockland County, he has also opened another office in White Plains. As one of the most caring attorneys we know, he goes out of his way to get involved and help his clients. Gary meets with his clients to discuss their progress and improvements in reaching their established goals. He acknowledges that everyone must progress at their own speed and approaches the task at hand with a friendly, very down-to-earth attitude. Over the years he’s practiced just about every possible area of the law. He’s been an assistant public defender for Rockland County and also assistant county attorney where he prosecuted juveniles and handled abuse and neglect cases. Then he went into private practice. He recalls: “I was the senior partner in a ten-man law office with approximately 30 employees. I helped create and develop one of the largest Rockland County law firms. “During that time our two offices were merged. I made decisions on a host of business solutions, including but not limited to goal setting, business management, hiring and firing of personnel, working out lease problems and various other business-related problems.” Gary focuses on personal injuries and criminal law. He told Rivertown: “Our firm prides itself in effec-

54

tively evaluating and reasonably resolving cases. We take a careful and caring consideration of all of our clients’ options. We are often able to strategically settle matters without the burden and expense associated with a lengthy and protracted litigation.” Gary recalls one recent personal injury case. His client had fallen from a scaffolding and impaled in four different places. “He almost passed away,” Gary said, shaking his head. “But remarkably he pulled through. And he got a very good award.” In business, he handles contracts, wills, leases, sales of real estate and business and other commercial matters. He told us: “Our firm prides itself in effectively evaluating and reasonably resolving cases. We take a careful and caring considereation of all of our clients’ options. We are often able to strategically settle matters without the burden and expense associated with a lengthy and protracted litigation.” In addition to his law practice he has been consulting and coaching Rockland Couty’s executives and local trade on how to succeed in their businesses. “I hit a certain age, and I wanted a change,” Gary told us. He decided he wanted to use his law degree to help others “organize their goals for the future.” Now in addition to his law practice, Gary has been assisting in the development and coaching of various companies, corporations, sole proprietorships and businesses. As Gary pointed out, many people reach a certain point in their lives – whether it is achieving a certain long-desired goal, making a certain amount of money, or reaching a plateau in one’s business – where they just feel “stuck in the same place.” “I want to coach these people and help them get to the next level, whatever that may be,” Gary explained. Gary is located at 55 Old Turnpike Road, Suite 304, Nanuet. Call him at 845-624-0100 or email him at gary@ garyliptonlaw.com. For more information visit www. garylipton.com. An invitation to transformation at Havenview Studio

The room is rich in warmth: in colors, in sound, in smiling faces and in feeling. The lights of the Tappan Zee Bridge sparkle in the background of the expansive floor to ceiling windows and the room is scented sweetly with the subtle smell of palo santo as funky jazz whispers in the background. Nicole Faustini, founder and instructor, begins a guided meditation to lure her students consciously into their breath and bodies, settling into the apparatus that is supporting them. Her voice is soft, nurturing and direct. The room is deep in reflection and presence: you have just entered Havenview. A movement studio that encourages connection, self-exploration and presence through the Pilates method. Nicole Faustini founded Havenview Pilates and Movement in September of 2013. Her background in the martial arts and personal pilates and yoga practice has instilled in her a deep understanding of how movement is essential to fulfillment, connectedness and a vital life. “My passion is to help people feel more alive in their bodies: to feel more free, more open and more connected to themselves, as I do for myself. To open. That’s where the healing is. Upon entrance, many joke the Pilates apparatus looks like medieval torture devices, but Nicole quickly explains: they are quite the opposite. The apparatus is a guide

56

and healing tool for the body. “Wow. The more I teach and practice the method, the more I am grateful for it and the profound impact Joseph Pilates legacy has and will continue to have on the way people connect. The method is precise, intentional and deep. It makes sense. The apparatus is used to support the body while creating resistance. It creates a structure to learn how to properly move in a balanced, precise and centered way. We help people ground into themselves. That is profound.” Nicole takes time with her students and understands the hesitation to try something new or to enter any fitness routine. The method has a number of layers to meet the level of any individual. She explains that Pilates is a process and that as you climb the ladder and progress in the method your body will find a treasure at each landing, whether physical, mental or emotional: it is all connected. Group classes are the perfect way to enjoy a continued Pilates practice, as the energy dynamics of a class setting are fun, full of life and supportive and are always preluded by foundational one-on-one sessions.

More like a semi-private session, Havenview’s apparatus classes cap out at five people and mat classes cap out at 10. Individual attention and integrity in movement are key proponents to success of the student; Nicole makes it a point that students feel safe, are moving with correct form and are both enjoying and having fun at the same time. And fun her students have: Nicole has been deemed the “smiling assassin” by students because her delivery is warm in the face of directed challenge. She shares in laughter and encourages a focused yet light environment. “Group classes on the mat and apparatus are not just satisfying for my students but also for myself. I love seeing my students smile in feeling. We laugh and celebrate in that feeling.” Nicole explains that transformation lies in the present and how one applies the Pilates principles of breathe, flow, precision, concentration, control and centering. Posture shifts, muscles get leaner and stronger and the body breathes more deeply. “Clients of mine have intuitively shared with me their experience in shift while

practicing here. Some of my favorite revelations are that they feel their bodies more intently and after just a few sessions they are seeing and feeling a difference in themselves.” The depth of transformation and impact of Havenview and Nicole’s work is best described by a note written by one of her dear clients: “One of the greatest gifts I have received is finally feeling comfortable in my own body and knowing that it looks and feels better than it has in a very, very long time. “I am so deeply appreciative and grateful for your help and expert instruction and the encouragement you’ve given me in attaining this. May you be blessed over and over.” Havenview Pilates and Movement is located at 38 High Avenue, Third Floor, right behind the Runcible Spoon Cafe. All sessions and classes require a reservation, whether by phone, email or online. The class schedule and further information can be found at www.havenviewstudio.com. Call the studio at 845.535.3129 to speak with Nicole directly or email havenviewstudio@gmail.com.

Skincerely – the name says it all: A Sincere Skincare practice. Together we have dedicated ourselves to provide our community with caring expertise by delivering highly individualized skincare. Our mission is to promote the health and enhance the beauty of our clients’ and patients’ skin. This is cornerstone of the practice that was founded in 2007 by Kathy Vulaj, RN and Michele Artuso, certified aesthetician. Both Kathy and Michele have been working in Rockland County in the field of aesthetic medicine and care for 20 years. Kathy, a registered nurse caring for patients in both medical and cosmetic dermatology, has particular expertise in treating unwanted hair growth, unsightly skin pigmentation, red spots and rosacea with the use of lasers and IPL technologies. Michele’s hands-on skin care ranges from caring for acne-prone skin to photoaging skin conditions, offering specialized facials, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. She advises her clients on their personal skincare tailored to addressing their particular issues while promoting skin health and enhancing their appearance. The practice flourished and gained a reputation for excellence within Rockland County. After three years, Skincerely welcomed Dr. Wendy Epstein, a Board-Certified dermatologist and NYU School of Medicine faculty member who is an expert in both the medical and cosmetic aspects of skin health. Dr. Epstein had worked with fillers and Botox for thirty years. In order to centralize her medical dermatology and cosmetic skin practices at one location, Dr. Epstein moved within the medical offices of Venolase, in West Nyack. Venolase was founded by Drs. Rex Ghassemi and Donna Konlian in 2009. Drs. Ghassemi and Konlian are both members of the American College of Phlebology and the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery. Venolase is the premier medical spa offering state-of-the-art medical technology including Thermage, Smartlipo (laser assisted body liposuction), Smooth Shapes Cellulite Reduction, Wrinkle Reduction and Facial Rejuvenation with CO2 Laser Resurfacing. Dr. Ghassemi also specializes in Spider Vein Removal, Varicose Vein Removal and Vascular medicine. As Skincerely continued to grow, Vulaj and Artuso responded to their clients and patients’ interest in having more advanced procedures performed. They looked long and hard until they found a kindred soul in Dr. Amarpreet Singh, an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, who specializes in cosmetic facial plastic surgery, oculo plastic surgery (Blepharoplasty), and whose compassion for his patients matched those of Skincerely’s. As both practices, Skincerely and Venolase, continued to thrive while providing complementary services, it began to make sense to combine the two. Venolase and Skincerely joined practices in 2013 in an effort to provide a full range of medical and cosmetic services in a relaxed and comfortable environment at their West Nyack location at the Palisades Professional Center at 2 Medical Park Drive providing both medical and aesthetic procedures. Vulaj states, “We are in the business of caring for people with compassion and a commitment to putting their best interests first. We now provide medical procedures, cosmetic procedures, and our pampering spa services in a compassionate care setting under one roof so that our clients do not have to travel to several locations.” “What is even more appealing is, that in our practice, we are able to utilize the various talents of each of our physicians synergistically to achieve a total transformation that is greater than the sum of each individual treatment alone,” says Artuso. “We are proud to have a team of such highly trained and skilled professionals all under one roof.” Dr. Epstein is very happy through the ability to provide both thorough medical dermatological care including skin cancer screenings and to be able apply her 30 years’ experience as a physician and artist to fulfill her mission of “Transforming Faces--Transforming Lives” using her expertise in fillers and Botox. When asked about reuniting with Skincerely she said “I am most fortunate to be able to extend my patients’ care and the results that they can achieve by having the professional comradery of the other skilled caring professionals of Skincerely and Venolase.” Dr. Singh, reflecting on the coming together of Skincerely and Venolase summed it up this way: “we take great pride in knowing that we are compassionate, extraordinarily capable physicians and practitioners who treat our patients as if they were members of our own families.” Dr. Ghassemi says he enjoys the combination of medicine, cosmetic, and spa services because, “the feeling you get is completely different. When you go into a doctor’s office, you immediately become more anxious. When you enter our practice, there is a feeling of peace and tranquility. Any procedure that you have will obviously be more pleasant in the latter setting. In addition we have highly trained staff with credentials meeting or exceeding what you would find in most doctors’ offices.

TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home - it’s all about the compassion

Story/Photos: Tom Riley When a loved one passes, one of the toughest tasks is choosing a casket. Joanna Brief, general manager/funeral director at T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home in Haverstraw is very aware of the stresses that the bereaved go through. She told us: “Here at T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home we’ve learned that choosing the casket is often an upsetting experience for the family so we devised a room where you can make an online selection of caskets in all price ranges that will make the process easier. “Families are receptive to the software and it’s just one of the things we do to ease their burden. Our staff here at 71 North Central Highway in Garnerville will guide your family in creating a meaningful ceremony to honor the life and memory of your loved one. A ceremony can be anything you wish it to be: simple or elaborate, traditional or unique. No matter how it’s tailored, such a ceremony is an important step in recovering from loss,” said Joanna Brief, General Manager/Funeral Director. “Gerald F. O’Sullivan, a licensed funeral director and I do pre-arranging of funerals even for healthy people. We go to people’s homes and chat with them so we can make

the funeral as personal as we possibly can. January is the season to pre-arrange a funeral. It’s the time lawyers and accountants say ‘get it done.’ “ A large part of the population we serve is Hispanic and Carmen Marty, our office

manager is bi-lingual. Sisto Pileggi, our assistant and funeral attendant also knows everybody in the community and puts people at ease during a trying time. “We are very involved in our community, both Gerry and I were born in Rockland.

Gerald F. O’Sullivan, Licensed Funeral Director, Joanna Brief, General Manager/Funeral Director, and Carmen Marty, Office Manager.

Gerry has been a volunteer firefighter for 40 years and is a member of the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus and many other organizations. “Half the calls we get are from people who know Gerry. He has truly lived a life of service to his fellow man. Both my Mom and Dad are longtime physicians in the County.” Gerry added: “Our motto here is Our Family Taking Care of Your Family.” We customize every funeral. “Recently a former Marine passed away and he loved riding his motorcycle. We had a whole biker procession following his glass enclosed hearse which was pulled by a Harley Davidson. “Whether you are a golfer, fisherman or Yankee fan we tell the family we’ll accommodate the decease’s wishes. We believe

it’s important to celebrate their lives and a funeral is important because it honors the deceased. Funerals are more for the living than the dead. It’s a tribute to a person’s life. “Both Joanna and I are constantly on call and No is not an acceptable answer. We also offer discounts to veterans, local firefighters and police officers.” Joanna continued: “We are here 100% for the families. I consider it an honor when people choose us to honor the deceased. We consider it a calling. “We encourage participation in the service by every age. Some recent trends in the funeral business include an increase in cremations, except New York State where only 25% choose to be cremated. “Funerals are becoming more personal, for instance some people want to be laid

out in a Yankee jersey. Our policy is service and half the people we lay to rest here, we knew in life. We serve all faiths and all races. One thing we don’t do here is upsell. We work within every budget.” You can call T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home located at 71 N. Central Highway in Garnerville by dialing 845-429-6665. Body Evolution Pilates Studio - a place with positive energy where everyone feels welcome The Body Evolution Pilates Studio began seven years ago when instructor Shantih Calabro took a leap of faith and decided to take her love of teaching to her own space. Her main intention was for it to be a place with positive energy, where anyone could feel welcome. From this initial intention, the studio has ‘evolved’ in to a place that is about much more than Pilates as a way of getting ‘in shape’ The true nature of the Pilates work (developed by Joseph Pilates) ,requires one to build a sense of focus and awareness that is not often emphasized in other exercise forms, or in the setting of a large class in a gym. Through the years of working with so many people on this deeper level, it became apparent that the work can have a transformative effect in many other areas of a person’s life. Because of this, the studio space has become dedicated even more, to honoring each individual and where they are on their journey. Long time client Claudette C., says: “It has been almost 3 years since I teamed up with Shantih to take back total control of life and not let fear of feeling pain with every movement control what I did or did not try to do. “I went from crawling on my hands and knees to change position on the mat to sitting up to change into the next position, to

feeling like I have wings and I am ‘flying on the reformer’. ‘The transformation has been of mind , body and spirit.’ In 2013, Reiki practitioner and teacher, Lisa Lacava, joined the studio offering sessions and Reiki training, enhancing the studios dedication to overall wellness. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing by working with, and channeling, the universal life energy, which flows through all of us. The deep effects of her personal experience with energy work, led to her desire to help oth-

ers on their healing path. As well as being a Reiki Master and teacher, her work has evolved to be deeply intuitive as well. The Pilates instructors at Body Evolution, are all dedicated to promoting a goal of overall well being, while bringing their own unique approach to the work. Along with a deep love of the wonders of anatomy, and dedication to teaching the movement principles of Pilates, Shantih’s work has grown to incorporate intuitive energy work and trigger point release. Instructor Christine Zucker, began her

She enjoys a creative and encouraging approach to the work, that keeps clients of all ages and fitness levels progressing with each session. Her calm enthusiasm and professionalism have been a welcome addition to the energy of the studio. Instructor, Victoria Huber has been with the studio since it’s early years ,when located in its first little space just up the street.. Her interest in fitness is life long, but af-

ter experiencing Pilates for the first time in 2002 she knew she had found her calling. She expresses that one of the greatest gifts she’s received through her years of teaching, are all the moments of hearing from those new to Pilates that this is exactly what their body needs, and that they’ve finally found a method of exercise that they love. Her client Alan says: “The private instruction and classes at Body Evolution are great, and I get an amazing workout in a relaxed, peaceful setting. It is one of the best things I’ve done for my body.

“As a guy, I was doubtful at first about taking Pilates instruction, but I have seen and felt positive changes in my body and have gained strength, flexibility, and an inner awareness of my body that wasn’t there before. “ Body Evolution offers individual training, duet sessions, small group mat classes, as well as Reiki sessions. • Body Evolution Pilates Studio, 104 Maple Avenue New City NY 845-634-1719 www.bodyevolutionpilates.net

Love the skin you’re in at the Skin Center Dermatology Group Story/Photos: Tom Riley The Skin Center Dermatology Group in New City has always been in the forefront in using advanced technology to treat dermatological problems. Dr. Peter C. Friedman, M.D., Ph.D., FAAD volunteers at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and teaches residents in pediatric dermatology. He told us: “We have an advanced acne treatment device called Theraclear. It is not a pill, not a medication and we do it in the office for acne breakouts. “It doesn’t have the side effects of antibiotics or other acne medication. On the diagnostic side we are using a complex mole mapping and monitoring system called Digital Dermascopy. It’s a series of full body photography taken from time to time that allows us to spot any changes in the skin. It is the best way to find skin cancer. “These groundbreaking tools increase our effectiveness when it comes to the early detection of skin cancers. Prevention is the key. People come in for a mole check and they have moles that are a little irregular. “We take Dermascopic pictures and can compare lesions and then biopsy if it is warranted. By using modern technology it’s the best way to reduce the number of biopsies. Another advantage is that patients are not charged for this procedure. We are a state-of-the-art dermatology practice offering dermatological care to everyone. We provide diagnosis, treatment and management of all types of dermatological problems and skin conditions.” Dr. Friedman says don’t suffer in silence, if you have vascular lesions, broken blood vessels, angiomas, rosacia, acne scars, age spots, warts and any inflammation of the skin. A smooth and blissful start to the New Year

Fresh beginnings and resolutions need inspiration and if that inspiration tastes good, so much the better. After all the preparation, parties, culinary excesses and general demands of the Holidays, we’re often left feeling exhausted and generally a little worse for wear. Then there are those pesky resolutions, like going to the gym or walking the dog no matter how cold it is outside not to mention eating a healthier diet. That’s where the inspiration comes in and I hope the following recipes will offer some to you. They’re easy to whip up as always and deeply nourishing to your body and soul. There’s no heavy meat, fat or sugar, just super healthy options that your body will crave after the indulgence of the Holiday Season. Happy New Year! Green Smoothie Bliss. My daughters love this drink, they didn’t expect too but they do. It’s a perfect way to start the day or try it for a mid morning or afternoon pick me up instead of another hit of caffeine. It’s cleansing, full of vegetarian protein and omega fatty acids plus you’re getting a good serving of greens. Try it and see what you think. 2 Servings. 1 avocado 1 banana (frozen is great)

76

Above: Parsnip Soup. Left Quinoa Salad with Roasted Root Vegetables. Opposite: Green Smoothie Bliss

1 tablespoon hemp seeds 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1 tablespoon your favorite greens protein powder 1 very large fist full of kale (middle stems taken out) or spinach leaves 1/2 apple, skin on (only if you have a very aggressive blender otherwise leave out) 6-8 oz almond, soy or cow’s milk 4 ice cubes A drizzle of maple syrup (optional) Optional additions: 2 teaspoons spirulina A drizzle of flax seed oil 2 teaspoons psyllium husk

Not difficult! Place everything in a blender, blitz until smooth, pour into a glass and enjoy. Parsnip Soup. I love this soup as the added flavors from the miso, sesame oil and coconut milk adds some depth, it’ll get you back for seconds - guaranteed. Serves 4 (generously) 8 parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks Olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 24-32 oz organic vegetable or chicken stock or water 1, 14oz can of organic coconut milk 2 fat cloves of garlic 2 teaspoons sesame oil

2 heaping teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon brown miso 1 heaping teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar A handful of fresh parsley Toasted pumpkin seeds for garnish Heat the oven to 400 F. Place the peeled and cut parsnips on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast in the oven for about 40-50 minutes. Move them around from time to time to make sure they’re not burning and cooking evenly. When cooked remove from the oven, place in a medium to large pan and add all the other ingredients. Blend together with an immersion blender, heat to warm through, check the seasonings adding more salt, pepper or apple cider vinegar if you think it needs it. Ladle into a bowl, garnish with a swirl of your choice: cream, vegan sour cream, crème fraiche, olive oil, then sprinkle over some toasted pumpkin seeds, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Serve and enjoy.

Quinoa Salad with Roasted Root Vegetables. Quinoa is a powerhouse of nutrition, it’s chock full of protein, fiber, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, copper, iron, omega 3 fatty acids, zinc and potassium, plus it’s gluten free. Little wonder it was considered sacred to the Incas. The following is my current favorite salad, it’s packed with delicious flavors from the roasted butternut squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and red onions all slightly caramelized to add a hint of sweetness. Serves 6-8 2 medium-large red onions, peeled and cut into wedges 1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks 4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon cinnamon 8-10 cherry tomatoes, halved Olive oil 1 1/2 cups quinoa, rinsed 1 small bunch fresh mint 1 small bunch parsley

Juice of a lemon Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Heat the oven to 425 F. Rinse the quinoa in a sieve until the water runs clear. Place the quinoa in a pan add 3 cups of water, cover and bring to the boil. When boiling turn down to a simmer and cook for approximately 10-15 minutes until the water is absorbed and the quinoa is cooked. They will look like tiny little spirals. Place in a large serving bowl and allow to cool. Place the onions, butternut squash, carrots and sweet potatoes on a large baking tray. Drizzle over some olive oil, sprinkle over salt, pepper, cinnamon and cumin. Roast for approximately 35-45 minutes, checking every 20 minutes or so, moving the veggies around so they cook evenly. When cooked through and the edges are just caramelized remove from oven and add to the quinoa. Add the tomatoes, fresh herbs, lemon juice and a few healthy glugs of olive oil. Taste and add salt and pepper if needed. Toss gently and serve.

It’s all about accumulation....isn’t it?

From the time we are just wee tots, most of us were trained to save. When I was in elementary school just a few years back (?) we were encouraged to save by way of a savings account that was set up within the school system. Every week, we took 15 minutes to fill out deposit slip, and we put whatever pennies worth of savings away for our rainy day. Little did I know that it was the beginning of a long process of education that would span my lifetime, and become my occupation and life’s work. We were taught to save and accumulate for a later goal. At that time I had no idea what a goal was but I was in for the ride. Later on in life for all of us, we became more educated to save. Savings accounts, IRA’s, 401(k)’s, investing- to accumulate money. The more the merrier. He or she who dies with the most toys wins. Think big or go home…you get the picture. But, nowhere in those crafty ditties did they say WHY we were saving, or for what. Now, as you know, I am all about saving- but with a plan. Saving without a plan is like taking a drive with no destination in mind- how will you know when you get there? “Just accumulate” they say, but why, and to what end? Clearly, we don’t know what our standard of living will be, where we will retire to, and how much it will cost decades

before the actual event. A fair amount of planning and projecting is at hand, but let’s be clear that ultimately in the early parts of our program, in our 30’s and 40’s at least, we are just taking an educated guess based on our present standard of living, and taking into account inflation, risk and a host of other factors, all we can do is guess. Once we get to our 50’s, the kids are hopefully through college, and we can get a better idea and plan accordingly. But, as in the earlier stages, guessing is still a factor in the plan. So, is the ultimate answer just to accumulate all that we can and hope for the best? As we go through life, we are taught to save, but perhaps for the first time, let me throw a monkey wrench into that thought. You see, when I ask new clients the most important thing they consider to be the biggest risk to them, the usual answer is risk of losing principal. While I see that as a real fear, I challenge that answer: I believe that the biggest risk to be concerned with facing retirement is loss of INCOME, not PRINCIPAL. Why you ask (or

78

let’s just assume you were asking)? Because most of us are saving for the biggest event in our lifetime history- retirement. While it may not be as big as getting married or having kids, it is pretty big. And if you don’t have sufficient assets to support yourself into this new paradigm in your life, it won’t happen- as least not with much financial support. So my friends, income is the name of the game. Consistent, durable, dependable income- income that you can’t outlive. Does accumulation of principal guarantee income? Ask those who relied on their portfolio to support them in 2008- with the depletion of principal also goes a reduction in income- there goes that theory. There’s got to be a better way… There are a number of factors that will decrease income in your retirement. Taxes, for one reason. This gives rise to spending time on your retirement planning many years in advance using a variety of vehicles that vary the tax consequences at retirement. The first that comes to mind is the difference between a Traditional IRA and a Roth IRA. With the Traditional, you get the tax deduction in the year of contribution, and with the Roth, you pay the taxes in the year of contribution, but the income derived later is tax free. Thus, with no taxation, there is more left in your pocket at a time that every dollar counts. Thus, if you vary your retirement contributions between before tax and after tax contributions (based on Federal qualifications) the income later on will be varied as well. There are some investment programs that will guarantee you income at retirement regardless of market value, so in the case of another 2008, your income may be virtually unchanged. Now, securities laws prevent me from talking about investment programs specifically, and I have a dear Compliance Officer who reads my column before I go to print, so I am restrained to tell you about them due to securities laws. I suggest you speak with your Financial Professional to learn about planning for the future with INCOME in mind, not just ACCUMULATION. Give us a call and we’ll fill you in on the skinny. The time for planning for retirement income is decades before the blessed event. It’s time to start preparing now…every year counts! Neal A. As we make our way down to the Middle Loire from the Upper Loire where Sauvignon Blanc reigns, we enter the land of red wines and more castles. We decided our home base would be a house nestled in the quaint town of Amboise. This is the perfect location for day trips to explore wineries and castles. The Loire Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so it’s as much about castles as it is about wine. There are forty-two Châteaux strategically located in the Loire Valley and the top six are less than a one hour drive from Amboise. Ch.d’Amboise and Ch. Close la Lucé are right in town so no driving is necessary. Ch.Chenonceau, Ch.d’Ussé, Ch.Chambord and Ch. d’Azay-le-Rideau are all worth a drive. The landscape is impressive yet serene. Along the way you pass all the vineyards with many wineries open for visiting and tasting. La route des Vignobles is the longest wine route in France spanning 800 km. This area is much undervalued for its wines. The reds from this area are predominantly Cabernet Franc such as Chinon, Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny. This is a varietal many people do not seek out. If not grown and vinfied with skill it can take on a vegetal, green character with under ripe tastes. However Cabernet Franc from one of the many talented winemakers of the Loire Valley is a delight. So many winemakers are making wines of inherent charm and as in most wine regions the new winemakers are making improvements in the vineyards by using fewer chemicals and going more organic. Saumur-Champigny, which is a blend of mainly Cabernet Franc with some addition of Cabernet Sauvignon, is a favorite as it is complex, with rich black fruit, a touch of spice and well balanced. It is also a great value here in our country. In this part of the Loire Chenin Blanc is the most important white varietal. Also known as Pineau de la Loire this is the grape that makes the famous Vouvray. This wine can be still, dry, sweet or sparkling. When dry it can be opulent and age for up to 10 years. Savennières, also made from Chenin Blanc, can be very concentrated and with great depth. The red grape Côt, also know as Malbec, comes from here as well. In Tours, a great little city to visit, you can taste most all the wines from the area. There is a medium-sized shop, Maison Des Vins de Tours, which houses all the wine for tasting and for sale. The afternoon we stopped in a highly knowledgeable young woman, Marie-Colombe Haudedert-Beaufrez, was conducting the tastings. We spent a couple of hours here chatting and tasting. At the time there were eighty local wines that could be tasted; we kept it to under a dozen. Marie-Colombe is a local from a farming family. She has life long ties to many of the grape growers and winemakers and has an astonishing mastery of Loire wine. She insists her palate is so well developed due to her parents dabbing wine on her lips as a baby! Do not miss the opportunity to visit and spend time with her.

Stick your head in the sand, Sly

A recent cartoon in New Yorker Magazine shows one person saying to another: “My desire to be well informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane”. Do you watch the news on TV? If you’re a teen, you’re not likely reading this, and you have your head stuck in your cell phone and it won’t be removed for the next 50 or so years until you begin collecting social security or lose your hearing, or your thumbs, whichever comes first. But for those of us who remember dial phones, and who do like to keep up to date, ok, at any rate, I, who would like to be able to kvetch about current events, like the “series of bombings, explosions, school shootings, kids getting killed on the railroad tracks, murdering spouses, erectile dysfunctions, kidnappings, ebola virusing, Isising, and voting, shy bladder, sly bladder and the Family Kidney Stone, leaks in your undergarments, and “if an erection lasts more than 4 hours” why can’t they just read that on the box….are people so stupid they’d think that’s normal and have to be TOLD OUT LOUD to go to the ER, when we’re trying to eat our veggie hot dogs, (and they ruined it????!!) I can’t believe that it is even said in front of children no less! I need to stick my head in the sand at times. (No wonder those kids live in their phones.) So I turn off the sound and read whatever I can stand reading on the TV, or turn it off altogether and listen to our little old bunny chomp on her breakfast, or dinner. Very peaceful, I must say. We actually enjoy having a conversation instead, and blood pressure returns to normal. Then after a tiny little bowlful of vitamins with breakfast that includes Dr. Jo’s O’s, my omega fish oil because, and I quote, “studies showing that omega-3s can help protect neurons against the damage that can be done by chronic stress”, and other good effects, quoting again “clinical trials that have found that omega-3s may help control depressive symptoms.” The news is depressing isn’t it? And “a study of schoolchildren in England linked omega-3s to more pro-social behavior“. Verrrree nice! Very nice. It’s nice to put fun things on our oatmeal, or yogurt, like pecans, and chia seeds and flaxseeds which have plant based omega 3’s. The body converts these plant derived omegas to what fish oil already is, in about 2 weeks or so. Some of you, including Dr. Jo, do so hate the fishy smell, which is why my Jo’s O’s are coated; so no fish burps.

80

Ok I never heard a fish burp, but have burped up fish oil and cleared the room. Hence, my very own “Jo’s O’s”, ok Oprah? More on this omega study with long confusing words mostly removed: “Chronic stress causes the release of glucocorticoids, (ok sorry) which greatly influence cerebral function.” AND “These stress-induced changes (bad) in neurotransmission (nerve transmission) could be counteracted by increasing the dietary intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, (good). Numerous studies have described the capacity of (omega 3s) to help protect neurotransmission from damage induced by stress and possibly preventing the development of stress-related disorders such as depression or anxiety. (I love to underline). The hippocampus contains receptors and is involved in learning and memory. This makes it particularly sensitive to stress, which alters certain aspects of hippocampal function, (hippocampus, involved in learning and memory, one sentence ago, in case you’re a little low on the omega 3’s). So what we should be doing as we watch the dreadful news in the morning, or evening, is snacking on some fish oil, ok maybe not snacking; at least getting fish oil in our diets, if we want to remain somewhat sane Sally. You could also snack on almonds, sardines (PeeU!) and walnuts Walter. But chronic stress from the news makes me run to chocolate, every night, because I love it, and yet another study shows, in part, but not the whole reason so don’t email me, why. “Cocoa flavanols (CF) positively influence physiological processes in ways that suggest their consumption may improve aspects of cognitive function”. (Yes I know it does more; reducing inflammation for some and increasing circulation too among other good things). When we look at Jeopardy I find that the chocolate helps me to think more clearly despite the stress of looking around in my brain for the questions to the answers, how backwards, say I. What is, “makes no sense

to me, Alex”? (He is a Smart Alec). After all that work viewing Jeopardy, other fun programs, (again, try “Finding Your Roots” on CH 13 Tues eves at 8pm) and reading for fun and relaxation, it’s time for a good night’s sleep around 10ish, and magnesium is on the list of supplements before turning in….. to a pumpkin, because the seeds are loaded with magnesium, a mood food present in almonds, another good thing to snack on when looking at the horror show called the news. If you have been taking your fish oil you remember I already said that. Of course if you are a TV viewer you’re used to being told everything 18 times. A survey of 2500 people showed that one in four said they had “a great deal of stress” in the last month, and those who were stressed out said that day to day watching, reading, or listening to the news was a big contributor.” Or in my case add to that the redundancy of the news reports on TV. NEWS ANCHOR: “Today we are going to tell you about a fire on Atlantic Ave”! Ok, “We’ll be right back to tell you about that fire on Atlantic Ave. Ok, we’re back. “Today there was a house fire on Atlantic”, let’s go to Richard who is on Atlantic to tell us about it. Richard: “Today there was a fire on Atlantic Ave”. No, really? Pass me a piece of chocolate. Yet another recent survey showed that one third of Americans change their diets in response to stress. You may want to change your diet to something that does you some good, instead of ruining your health with carbs…(ok we all do that, so see last month’s article), which is what more people were ultimately stressed about, their health that is, or you can turn off the TV after the first announcement because you’ll only get it 8 more times anyway, and tawk, VERRRY nice! Very nice! This column is dedicated to Tom Magliozzi, one of the Car Talk Show guys on public radio, whose death was such a loss. He and his brother, who my heart goes out to as I lost my own brother years ago, had a wonderful, authentic, silly and brilliant chemistry together. Every time I listened to that show, one where all you did was laugh along, (and he had the most infectious laugh of all), I am sure it enhanced my immune system and really helped to counter all the week’s bad news. He felt like a brother, so here’s to you Tom! I, of many millions, will miss you terribly. Thanks for all the laughs! Dr. Jo, Chiropractor in Nyack. www. GoDrJo.com

Gallery Show for January: The Piermont Marsh: Printmaking by Student Artists Grades 4 - 9. Artist’s Reception, Wednesday, January 14th at 5:00 PM For the month of January, the Piermont Library will display “The Piermont Marsh: Printmaking by Student Artists Grades 4 - 9.” For the fall semester, the Library hosted a special series of art classes for kids: Artists-in-Residence at the Piermont Library and Piermont Marsh. This special series was funded by a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation and taught by Alexis Starke. Students became Artists-in-Residence, exploring the Piermont Marsh, Sparkill Creek, and Hudson River, taking photographs and sketching along the way. They then used the photographs and sketches as references for a number of printmaking projects using monotype, blockprinting, and photo-transfer. Approximately 11,000 years old, the 1000 acre Piermont Marsh is an ecologically unique component of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve. The grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation provided students with cameras, monotype gel printing plates, block printing carving tools, brayers and printing inks. The class is culminating with January’s Art Exhibit at the Library.

Wednesday, January 14 – 8:00 at Nyack Center. THE SKELETON TWINS. Directed by Craig Johnson. With Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Luke Wilson. USA, 2014, 93 minutes, rated R. Meet the Filmmaker: Producer Jared Goldman. Deftly gliding between comedy and drama, this tale of suicidal twins who share an eerie emotional synchronicity toggles deftly between comedy and drama. When the married Maggie reluctantly allows her estranged, gay brother Milo to move into her home, their intuitive connection re-opens wounds and secrets. Without veering into melodrama, Maggie and Milo demonstrate that being simpatico with someone also allows them to inflict the most painful emotional wounds. Filmed in Rockland County, which is

part of the story. “This is a smart movie about complicated people in search of something approaching inner peace. . . .” – Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times SPECIAL BENEFIT PERFORMANCE FOR RIVERTOWN FILM - Wednesday, January 28 – 8:00 PM at Elmwood Playhouse. THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA. Written by Edward Albee. A tragically comical play with a simple but deeply disturbing premise: a married man falls in love with a goat. Once his wife finds out this sordid truth, all hell breaks loose. Despite the comedic nature of this play, Albee questions social morality, current taboos, the perception of female identity, homosexuality, and the changing nature of social conventions like no other contemporary author can. Audience Advisory: contains STRONG ADULT subject matter that is not suitable for persons under 18 years of age. $30 tickets include complimentary wine and dessert. RIVERTOWN FILM CO-SPONSORSHIPS - Friday, January 16 - 6:30 PM Reception / 7:30 PM Screening. Rockland Community College Performing Arts Theater. LAKAY. Directed by Tirf Alexius. USA, 2014, 83 minutes. Drawn back to Haiti by the 2010 earthquake, the filmmakers reveal the tragedy from an intimate and personal perspective. Even in the face of tragedy they find moments of inspiration and laughter, and ways to strike a balance between suffering and joy. Lakay is a story about family, and Haiti, and about all the families and countries we have left behind. Proceeds from the screening will go to Haitian orphans. Sunday, January 18 – 2:30 at Nyack Library BROTHERS OF THE BLACKLIST. Directed by Sean Gallagher. On September 4, 1992, an elderly woman in a small town in upstate New York reported an attempted rape. Police contacted officials at SUNY Oneonta, who provided the names of 125 black male students, all of whom became suspects. This is the story of those students, who are now adults, and of their ordeal, that became the longest litigated civil rights case in American history. It is a cautionary tale, as relevant today as ever. Post-film discussion with some of those who participated in the case.
