Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous: A long time friend of mine has just written his autobiography - and I’m mad as hell. Les Hinton, who became publisher of the Wall Street Journal after years in tabloids has written a very thick book about his life in newspapers. And I discovered that even though he’s an old friend there was a lot about him that I didn’t know. Looking through bis book, I discovered that he’s met dozens of big names from Paul McCartney to Prince Charles - even punk rocker Johnny Rotten. It got me to thinking what famous people have I met - apart from local Legislator John Murphy. Thankfully I’ve come up with a few. Ernest Borgnine: I was working at the National Enquirer down in Florida. You might be surprised to know that the Enquirer regularly had a bunch of stars to their Christmas party. It was held at the posh Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach. And the year I was there I was given the job of entertaining Ernest, who’d starred in Marty and lots of tough guy movies. My job - and it was a tough one - was to keep him happy. And I did this by standing at the bar drinking Johnny Walker Black and listening to his fascinating adventures in Hollywood. Ernest was actually a very down-to-earth regular guy and a lot of fun to talk to. Sadly though, after knocking back all those Johnny Walkers I’ve no memory of any of his anecdotes. Then there was world famous psychic Jeane Dixon. Jeane’s reputation was based on the provable fact that she’d predicted the Kennedy assassination - on two occasions. The tabloids regularly ran her predictions about celebrities and got a mammoth spike in sales. Her prognostications were about celebrities like Liz Taylor, Cher or Elvis. Sadly she knew absolutely nothing about any of them. So we had to tell her exactly what to predict - such as Liz is going to marry Elvis, and so on.

20

But Jeane DID have at least two famous celebs she really did know. Nancy Reagan and, believe it or not, the Pope. Unfortunately, although she regularly had lunch with Nancy, she refused to spill the beans. She was a little bit more forthcoming about the Pope. “I went to Rome last week,” she told me. “to meet the Pope.” Really, I said, eagerly awaiting what came next. “Yes,” she said. “The Pope was very impressed with me.” That was Jeane. It was all about her. Then there was media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, of Fox News infamy. I worked for him for more than 20 years. In fact, when I first knew him he was actually a very rabid liberal. I worked with him at the New York Post. Every morning he’d come in and drag me off to the cafeteria to review the newspaper I’d just produced. As curious inky printers looked nosily at us, Rupert would tear the paper apart. “No, no no, you can’t put a half naked woman on Page 1!!” I explained it was Patty Hearst having her last moment of freedom before going to jail. He ignored that and continued: “What’s that ad doing on Page 5. I don’t want pawn broker ads in the first pages of the Post!” And so on, making a lot of noise and banging his fist on the greasy table. Finally we reached the back page. “Actually it’s a good paper, Phil. Nice job.” At least I got my revenge on him. I named my cat after him. Finally there’s one other celebrity I could talk about. Boulderbird, the Rockland Boulders mascot. We’ve met several times. Unfortunately he’s never said a word.

Gary’s Gutter Service and Rivertown Magazine presented its July 2018 “Hero of the Month” Award to Christine Silverstein, the Founder of The United Women of Rockland at Quinta Restaurant in Pearl River. The mission of The United Women of Rockland is to assist women and their families to make ends meet while they are recovering from or receiving treatment for major injury or illness. It was founded by Christine Silverstein in 2014 with encouragement from Matt Greene, General Manager of Ovations at Provident Bank Park, Home of the Rockland Boulders. Christine said: “Mothers take care of their children, wives take care of their husbands, daughters take care of their parents. However many of them fail to take care of themselves. It’s because of these roles, they put themselves last and many do not look to others for help when they are in need. Women are caretakers, caregivers by nature. And this is the reason for the birth of United Women of Rockland. When a good friend suffered a major illness I realized a need in our community to help women with a devastating health diagnosis. United Women of Rockland has grown because of the dedication of men and women who believed in my vision. We are a registered not-for-profit charity and our volunteers dedicate their time and a piece of their heart to women diagnosed with devastating illnesses” said Christine. “I’d like to highlight the volunteers and the amazing work they do. Christopher Fondacaro is our Chief Financial Officer. Karen Tillette is in charge of Public Relations and Maureen Ferguson is our Volunteer Coordinator. Barbara Condon is our Treasurer and Fiona Parahus is our Event Coordinator. Serafina Bates is our Secretary and Christine Davies is our Medical Liaison. John Brenner Jr. is our Director of Web Development and Connor Silverstein is our Chief Technology Officer. “We are alway looking for more volunteers and we do a lot of fundraising. We are so fortunate to have Gary Parahus of Gary’s Gutter Service offering $1000 in matching funds. Please go to our web site: www.unitedwomenofrockland.com and click on donate. You’ll find lots of information about what we do. Please consider helping us as you never know one day it could be a friend or loved one or even yourself who finds themselves in need of our help,” said Christine.

Dear Readers, Wishing all of you a Happy 4th of July and a beautiful summer. When I am visiting friends, many of them say “my kitchen backsplash is so boring”. So I decided to suggest fabulous fixes for those boring backsplashes. Here we go. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are a popular choice. Tiles are both versatile and practical. They are fired at high temperatures creating a hard surface that is stain and scratch-resistant. Traditional subway tiles can be used in dramatic patterns. The selection is huge and affordable. Glass tiles toughened or tempered is a great choice for a clean streamlined look. Its strong, durable and easy to clean. They can show water spots and smears but a regular polish will keep it looking great. Mirrored glass is also a popular backsplash choice. It comes in a variety of hues from silver to rose gold which will enhance the look of a traditional styled kitchen. It enlarges the look of the kitchen. However, it should NOT BE USED BEHIND THE STOVE, as the heat can crack the mirror. I designed these in the 80’s and they are back in style. Stone is timeless and appealing and is a great choice if you are planning to sell your home in the future. However, stone is porous and can be damaged by exposure to water. For this reason, marble and granite need to be sealed and maintained every few years. Keep oil bottles and wine off the counters and wipe up immediately after spills. I have granite in our New York residence. Never a problem. (We also

Prominent interior designer Candice A. Boyle, Decorator for a Day, writes every month to help readers with their design and decorating problems. You can email her at cbcreates2014@gmail.com or call her at 845-358-6575 have a white large subway tile backsplash, simple and timeless and very little maintenance.) Engineered stones offer sleek, high-end finishes and scratch resistance. With all stone products choose your cleaning materials carefully. Metal backsplashes offer a different look. Quick and easy to install, long-lasting and durable. Stainless steel is practical and affordable. We have a stainless backsplash in our Florida residence. It is clean and very attractive looking. Wipes up quickly. Hammered copper is trending right now and it is a great look. Looks great with antique bronze faucet etc. Wood backsplashes are not the obvious choice but wood is seeing an upswing in popularity.

Choices vary from rustic reclaimed boards to smooth hardwood planks. These aren’t the easiest backsplashes to clean. But any marks simply add to their character. The wood can be treated and sealed o make it water-resistant. Regular oiling and waxing will keep it looking its best. The wood is an option but I am not recommending it unless it is perfect for your kitchen. Also, you can use glass or mirror inserts with your stone to create interesting patterns. In small spaces I run the counter top right up the backsplash for an uninterrupted look. Uncomplicated and handsome. I hope these tips help inspire you to update your kitchen backsplashes. Enjoy.

It is not too late to plan for the new tax law

It was all the rage back in January, and throughout this past tax season, the new 2018 tax law. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) mostly took effect on January 1, 2018. We all cringed as we learned about the loss of several popular tax deductions. Most importantly, a cap of $10,000 on the deduction of state and local property and income taxes combined. During the last several months I spent lots of time answering client questions regarding 2018 tax concerns. I provided 2018 tax projections to most of my clients. These projections were calculated assuming the 2018 income and deductions would be exactly the same as they were for 2017. In most cases the total tax bill either decreased or stayed about the same. There were very few taxpayers who came out owing significantly more in federal taxes for 2018 than they did for 2017. Now that we have all filed our 2017 tax returns, and paid our 2017 income taxes, it seems that most of us have put the 2018 tax law dark cloud in our rear view mirror for now. You know the saying, “out of sight, out of mind”. Only the politicians who seek to “outsmart” the IRS are still talking about the new tax structure. Particularly state Governors who are up for reelection. They claim that they will put a stop to these changes and save their constituents lots of money. Meanwhile their proposals are mostly political rhetoric that are far less than unlikely to ever see the light of day. Meanwhile these same politicians quietly look forward to overflowing

26

state coffers when the new federal law fully kicks in. The one question that is still unanswered is what will the states do? Will they make similar changes to reduce their taxes or just follow the PC crowd and push back on the federal? For example, high taxing states, like NY and CA, could still allow full property tax and miscellaneous deductions on their tax returns to reduce the tax bills of their constituents. Or, they could quietly follow the federal changes and enjoy an increase in the amount of tax that they collect due to reduced deductions while letting the federal government take the blame. Let’s take another look at the new tax law as it applies to individuals. Now is a good time to revisit your 2018 tax plan so to be sure to minimize your 2018 tax bill. In future columns I will elaborate on specific individual provisions, and focus on the business tax provisions, of the new law. • All except the lowest individual tax bracket rates have been reduced. Most taxpayers will find themselves paying tax at a lower rate starting in 2018. • Kiddie tax increase: Tax on children’s unearned income in excess of certain thresholds will likely increase significantly. • The allowable standard deduction has almost doubled. This will simplify most tax returns and reduce taxes for those who normally do not itemize. • Limits on itemized deductions: Many itemized deductions are no longer available, or are now limited. Here are some of the major examples. • Caps state and local tax deductions:

State and local tax deductions are limited to $10,000 total for all property, income, and sales taxes. This does not apply to taxes relating to a business or a rental property. Those taxes are fully deductible. • Caps mortgage interest deductions: For new mortgages, mortgage interest will be deductible on debt of no more than $750,000. Existing mortgages are unaffected by the new cap. This does not apply to mortgages on business or rental property. That interest is fully deductible. The act eliminates deductions for interest on home equity debt. • Limit of theft and casualty losses: Deductions are now available only for federally declared disaster areas. • No more miscellaneous deductions: This includes employee business expenses, employee home office, employee use of car, professional advisor fees, tax preparation fees, investment expenses, and most other miscellaneous itemized deductions. Tip: If you’re used to itemizing your return, that may change in coming years as the doubled standard deduction and reduced itemized deductions make itemizing less attractive. • Deduction for personal exemptions is eliminated. At $4,050 per person, this will increase taxable income for most. This will especially impact those families with many dependents. • Increased tax credits for qualified children. $500 “family” tax credit for other dependents. This will help to offset the loss of personal exemptions. • Allowable itemized deductions are no longer phased out when income exceeds certain levels. • For divorces executed after 12/31/2018 deductions for the payment of alimony have been eliminated. • Deductions for moving expenses have been eliminated. Also, amounts received as moving expense reimbursements are now taxable. • Traditional to Roth IRA conversions can no longer be reversed. • Thresholds to which individuals are subject to AMT have been significantly increased. Most individuals will no longer be subject to AMT. • The Obama Care insurance penalty will no longer apply after 2018.

Q: Where can I learn more about appealing my property taxes? A: There is a two-prong approach when appealing your property taxes, especially if you have your house on the market. First, contact your local tax assessor’s office to see what procedures to follow in appealing your home’s assessment, this involves a formal tax-appeal process which begins with an appeal filed with the appropriate assessment appeals board. In Clarkstown call (845) 639-2040, Orangetown (845) 359-5100, Haverstraw (845) 429-2200 and Ramapo (845) 3575100. The second option is to use some private companies in Rockland County that for a fee navigate the appeal process for you. Keep in mind there is a fee for the service.

Q: We just moved into a rental apartment. When we viewed the apartment it looked clean and neat and we fell in love with it. In the last couple of weeks we are noticing evidence of mice dropping and have seen a few critters. Our landlord said we should call an exterminator and pay for the expense. Shouldn’t this be the landlord’s responsibility? We love the apartment, but cannot live with these unwelcome creatures. Can we break our lease? Can we force the landlord to exterminate? A: First check your lease and see if there is any provision that

We will never forget

While the Federal Holiday of Memorial Day is designated as the final Monday of May, and often celebrated with grilling and games, the actual remembrance is far more serious - and often falls on a completely different date. Just so in 2018, when Monday May 28 was the ‘Holiday”, while the somber remembrances of many occurred on the actual Decoration Day - Wednesday May 30. Decoration Day originated shortly after the Civil War, with tributes to fallen soldiers and decoration of their graves, occurring on May 30. As with many

38

US events, the actual meaning of the commemoration - remembrance of those who served and died in the Nation’s service - has for too many been subverted into an excuse for yet another three day weekend. On May 30 2018, in Piermont NY, 4 local residents salute a memorial to some of those who fell while serving their country. Photo: Dr Daniel Spitzer

Palazzo style vacation home showcases class in the hills over Greenwood Lake By Amie Butchko As dictionary-defined, the word palazzo designates a palatial building--typically in Italy. But this Mediterranean-inspired property rises from the Greenwood Lake landscape like a gracious fortress in its own right, echoing the very spirit of such underpinnings. With annually yielding grape vines and a beautiful stone-paver terrace and inground pool courtyard gracing lush, maintained grounds (which feature among luxuries, lines of hybrid fruit trees and heavy iron-embellished planters and gating), the space drips with elegant details to delight. Inhabitants lucky enough to spend time here, can find respite from the harsh realities of the world, and from The City, for sure. ‌But that is not all. Perhaps even more alluring is that among its many elegant amenities and carefully cultivated beauty, lies a heavy installation of energy-saving technologies that impact the possibility of an extremely low bill lifestyle here. It truly is an uber-efficient home. Striking First Impressions Overlooking the beautiful white lilac trees amidst the aromatic sensuality effected as one walks to the entrance, is a towering villa-esque stucco facade laced with balconies and handsome muted colors impressing the feel of a country far away. Up short black absolute granite stairs, and a red marble-tiled landing leading to the impressive oaky door, tongue and groove design (made without a nail or

40

elegance pervades. A Fireplace Extraordinaire built-in creates an amazing focal anchor here, having enough power to heat the entire massive house, and as previously mentioned, the pool as well. No bills incur. The cherry mantle and again, black absolute granite hearth lend an attractive chic to almost scant dĂŠcor and one looks to the enormous walls, all donned with tasteful and expensive artwork in large size. The ceiling itself is stunning with recessed square tray detail all painted stark white over beautiful rich hardwood, top of the line, of course. Purposefully Curated Raw Materials In this home, everything was curated. From Ludowici clay tiles donning the roof

screw like those in Romania), one just knows they are entering a place set apart from any prior experiences. A true departure, a true escape. This very contemporary Italian-feel home is without dispute, a sight to be seen. It is made from the most finely curated materials, collected by the current owner as a matter of perfectionist insistence. All concrete and metal structuring, the home will not corrode. There is no wood to decay with age. It leverages solar toward a zero-bill pursuit, and the luxe and elegance inside really is a jaw-dropping sight. Retro Contemporary Chic, Built with Smart-Tech in Mind With solar panels – resulting in minimal electric charges, a gasification furnace where gas produced from burning wood can be used for hot water and whole pool heating, and an upgraded GE semi-rigid insulation throughout, the whole house nest thermostat system further makes going green an easy goal, allowing adjustments of interior temperature to be made from smartphone access. Through the stalwart front door, one will find a massive great room 25x30. It is clean and sleek and sparse, but with a largeness that hints at indulgence. Off the breezy space imbued in natural light, are two verandas that reveal beautiful views of the lush grounds and highlight parquet-style composite flooring. A simple

Palazzo which will never degrade in 70 years to Venetian porcelain inlays in the lower level flooring, to Botticino marble and beautiful earthy, shower tilework, floor-to-ceiling, in each of the full 3 baths, the home showcases the finest materials; selected purposely to create a high-end structuring that will never decay. There is no plastic piping, only cast iron. Perfect as an entertainer’s home, the large scale great room is one of the few common area living spaces, keeping things to an ironically minimalist feel in this gargantuan footage. The kitchen, also very large leads out to a beautiful balcony overlooking the property’s private vineyard-ing. The wide-open space features a Sub-zero fridge, Miele stove and washer and a stainless steel deep sink with absolute black granite which is found throughout as an always repeating accent. It is stunning to the eye, and a retro feel conjoins with true contemporary intelligence. Simple and Elegant, a Perfectionist’s Lair The current owner, and his builder, walk us through the house, pointing out in delight all the amazing craftsman details. There is a manufactured slate and metal stairway leading up to the second floor, showcasing a sleek landing which hosts a fur, animal print and metal-embellished sitting area. It is tasteful and elegant, simple yet chic and uncomplicated like the interior of this beautiful home. White pervades and a wall of double door closets lead to an amazing bath, again with the finest materials and stonework creating an elegant impression of luxury. The master rivals the size of the great room below. It is enormous. There is a cast iron wood burning stove and of course verandas lacing walls, overlooking the pool courtyard below. A guest bed and another front room with veranda define this 3-bedroom space. Simple, uncomplicated, and laced with fine art, a laid-back yet very high-end appeal permeate the overall footage. It is eccentric, even, but understatedly so. Love in the Palazzo Below, is the pool. It is accessed

42

through the all-metal-ceilinged ground level with large, heavy doors and cast-iron piping over a white porcelain tiled laundry room that has its own chic and feels important. There is vast storage space and a concrete room that could easily be another great finished space if there were ever a need, but it is difficult to imagine one in all this grandness and space. Once through to the outdoor courtyard, one just looks up at the balconies above and beautifully maintained Italianesque stucco walls with two-toned neutral stoning, framing the windows. A recessed pool showcases retaining walls, iron gating, beautiful landscapes and a Tuscany-style courtyard feel. 2 outbuildings create a pool house and tractor or lake-toy housing. The orangey-clay tile roofs create a beautiful effect contrasted with the home exterior. It is extremely private here. Quiet and lovely; an escapist dream. Short miles to Greenwood lake leave

opportunity for boating and other lake activity. The wineries and breweries, farm markets and shops of quaint Warwick are just up the road. 17A makes a quick NYC commute easy, just but over an hour away. Could this be your posh, countryside escape? Why not come and sample some of the homemade cherry wine made here, and take in the scene, 5 pounds of grapes are yielded here each year. It is quickly accessed, but it could truly be, your world away. Contact Sanford Glazman, Licensed Real Estate Associate Broker, or Jennifer Lucas, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, for William Raveis Baer & McIntosh in Warwick, NY, for details at 845-987-2000 to set up your “trip abroad” today. Be sure to make a day of it, and tour the beautiful area – taking in all that these farm to table, artisan surrounding towns have to offer you, along with this amazing property which needs to be seen to be fully exposed in all gracious splendor.

The joint is jumpin’ in July at Penguin Rep Theatre The joint is jumpin’ in July at Penguin Rep Theatre in Stony Point as the lower Hudson Valley’s award-winning professional theatre under the leadership of founding artistic director Joe Brancato and executive director Andrew M. Says Mr. Brancato about Clever Little Lies, “a mother always knows when something is wrong, but when Alice tries to get to the bottom of things between her son and his wife, secrets are spilled and she and her husband Bill find out that honesty may not be the best policy after all.” Performance days and times for Clever Little Lies are: Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m., with matinees on Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Penguin’s popular Play With Your Food series of readings of new plays with

a bite to eat continues on Monday, July 9 and Monday, July 23. String Around My Finger, a drama with humor and heart by Brenda Withers, will be read on July 9. Penguin Rep literary manager Angelo Parra describes the play as “an amusing, insightful, and touching play about Emma and her fiancé, Kip, as they wrestle with the implications of the loss of their wedding plans.” Says Mr. Parra, “the ever-practical Lisa, Kip’s cell-phone-addicted sister, and Dave, a handsome, level-headed physician assistant, bring differing perspectives as

Image by Jack Rushen, a fast-paced

drama dealing with success, loyalty, and compassion, will be read on July 23, with Pasta Cucina of Stony Point providing the food. Mr. Brancato also announced a special “pop-up” presentation: On Sunday, July 15 at 7 p.m., Penguin will present Draw the Circle, written and performed by

Mashuq Mushtaq Deen. “Draw the Circle is a remarkable piece of theatre,” says Mr. Brancato, “which tells the hilarious and moving story of Deen’s transition as seen from the point of view of his family and friends.” “It brings to life,” he continues, “the often-ignored struggle that a family goes through when their child transitions from one gender to another.” Performances and readings are scheduled at Penguin’s intimate, 108-seat theatre, located at 7 Crickettown Road. “The converted barn, circa 1880, has never been more inviting” (The New York Times). Says Mr. Horn, “it’s theatre so close you can feel it, with comfy upholstered seats and no seat more than 30 feet from the stage.” The theatre is air conditioned, handicapped accessible, and has plenty of free parking. On Sunday, July 29, there’s the theatre’s big annual gala fund-raising event. Penguin Rep Theatre will honor Ann Dowd, Emmy and Critics’ Choice Award-winning actress for The Handmaid’s Tale, and Phil Bunton, publisher of Rivertown Magazine, for his business support of the arts. Ms. Dowd, who has starred in four productions at Penguin, says “I’ve loved every experience I’ve had there, every wonderful play, every wonderful role, in that beautiful theatre in the country.” To order tickets or for further information, visit Penguin Rep’s website at www. penguinrep.org or call 845-786-2873.

Aqua Terra Grille’s ocean to table dining experience

Story: Tom Riley Ever since AquaTerra Grille introduced the ‘Ocean To Table’ dining experience, the public can’t get enough of Chef Nicholas Lambos’ culinary cuisine. Seafood lovers throughout the Hudson Valley are singing the praises of their fresh seafood display. “I’ve developed relationships with our vendors to provide fresh and exotic seafood from all over the world that cannot be found anywhere else in the area,” Nick told us. “Our customers can walk up and pick the fish they want and we’ll grill it whole for them. We want our clientele to enjoy fresh fish at an affordable price. Five days a week we fly the fish in directly from Europe, South America and other parts of the world.” This year, AquaTerra Grille is celebrating their 8th anniversary in business. Nick continued: “In addition to our focus on fresh seafood, we also specialize in catering, with 4 unique rooms designed to accommodate parties of 20-100. Our service and facilities are among the best in the area. “Our variety of catering packages can accommodate almost any budget. Our Award-Winning Sunday Brunch Buffet takes place from 11am-3pm and features 50+ different items. The price is $25.95 and it includes unlimited mimosas (for 2 hours),” On Monday-Thursday, AquaTerra

58

Grille offers a ‘Weekday Prix-Fixe Dinner Special’ for $24.95 per person. A delicious 3-course dinner with an emphasis on classic and contemporary Mediterranean dishes. On Wednesdays & Sundays they also offer 1/2 off on select wine bottles with entrées. Nick said: “I’m a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and have worked as a sous chef at some of the top Greek restaurants in Manhattan - Milos Estiatorio and Limani. I’ve also worked at top seafood restaurants in Miami, Atlanta,

and Greece. Our menu reflects my past experiences and is inspired by the Mediterranean culture and cuisine.” It is generally accepted that folks in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea live longer and suffer less than most Americans from cancer and cardiovascular ailments. It has been found that an active lifestyle, weight control and a diet low in red meat, sugar and saturated fat and high in produce, nuts, fruit and other healthful foods like fish and seafood, whole grains,

olive oil, humus, salads and a splash of red wine can lead to a longer life. Study after study has led many physicians to recommend the beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet. AquaTerra’s other weekly features include ‘Tasty Tuesdays’ where they offer $5 shared plates (1 per person). Thursday is ‘Ladies Night’ where they offer $6 martinis, margaritas & well drinks and $5 house wine. And don’t forget ‘Draft Friday’ where you can find select beers on draft for $5. The creative Ask Adam team disrupts the Garden State real estate scene

New historic listing coming soon in Park Ridge.

64

Story/Photo: Tom Riley The “Ask Adam” Team from William Raveis Baer & McIntosh has evolved into a small band of young expert entrepreneurs (Adam Blankfort, Sid Goto, Ryan Paige, Frank Petrucelli, Brett Thompson, Reed Tighe, and now two new members, Tim Kuder and Jeremy Perussi), each with a marketing specialty, that when combined, brings about the most amazing explosion of talent and technology in the real estate world. Their goal, is not volume, but instead perfection of service to their clients, and to achieve the highest price for their clients, in the shortest period of time. Their results speaks volumes. “We use the best technology available and actively develop and patent it as it becomes available. Now we are expanding into Bergen County,” said Brett Thompson. Brett Thompson is a veteran New Jersey realtor with 6 years of networking with hundreds of other New Jersey agents and he knows the “Ask Adam Team’ is about to disrupt the real estate scene in the Garden State in a big way. Over the past few months Brett and his team have listed and sold homes in Ramsey, Park Ridge, Waldwick and New Milford, New Jersey. As they enlarged their presence in New Jersey sales and listing records will shatter as they have in the Hudson Valley due to their innovative approach to real estate. Brett said: “We approach every listing with a team meeting where eight minds find the best way to sell a property. This formula worked in the New York market, now Bergen County is feeling the effect of the “A Team’s” strategic marketing.” Brett introduced two new members, Tim Kuder and Jeremy Perussi, both Jersey natives and dynamic realtors to the Team.

From left: The New Jersey section of The ASK ADAM TEAM, Brett Thompson, Tim Kuder, Jeremy Perussi and Frank Petrucelli.

Tim Kuder said: “I’ll be bringing my photography and cinematography skills to the Ask Adam Team. For the past eight years I’ve been a wedding photographer. I use my outgoing personality and social skills and made an easy transition to real estate. “I document my client’s acquisition of their most precious possession.

Good video and photography makes a huge impact on home buyers and sellers. I sell the experience of owning a home, not the product and it’s working.” Tim added: “By using drone shots, aerial and videos, we are moving homes and making people happy.” Jeremy Perussi just got out of the Navy after serving all over the world. “I like helping people make the most important investment in their lives. I bring customer service, discipline, commitment and the ability to relate to people of many ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Wherever you are in the

world, there is still no place like home. I appreciate the permanence and independence owning a home can bring to people. True wealth and equity comes from owning your own home,” said Jeremy. Frank Petrucelli worked at Apple for 6 years and he brings Analytics and Social Presence. “The Team’s combined approach of digital marketing and patented technologies and analytics bring about the best exposure in the market today. With impeccable service, this is the team to rely on for the uniqueness of their properties, affordability and maxi-

mum results,” said Frank. “Our strategic and innovative marketing is being utilized in all our offices and I enjoy mentoring the Northvale office in executing strategic marketing. It has made William Raveis Baer & McIntosh a technological powerhouse with global reach,” said Brett. Are your hours yours or ours?

Time management- it seems there is just not enough time in the day to get done the massive amount of issues and tasks in front of us every day. Calendars, schedules, Outlook, phones, computers programs- no matter what method of scheduling you use, it just seems to be the running-around-like-achicken-with-his-head-off-syndrome. Getting behind early in the day is brutal, and then it’s a day of playing “catch-up.” We start the day with good intentions, organized and scheduled, and within 5 minutes (if that long) we get derailed. Sound familiar? What say we rebel and say- I’VE HAD ENOUGH…IT’S TIME TO TAKE BACK MY TIME!!! Let’s first look at how much time you put into controlling your time. Do you keep a set schedule, or do you wing-it every day? For me, my schedule is neatly laid out for me weeks in advance, but it seems I always end up putting out fires in between my neatly laid out day. Clients call with last minute needs and concerns, and I do my best to take care of everybody on a timely schedule. The problem is though, there’s only so many hours in the day and since we have to do things like eat, sleep and occasionally see

our family, decisions must be made as to realistically what can be done in a day’s work. I take my clients issues very seriously, so some days are long past the regular quitting time. Some issues are time sensitive and must be attended to immediately- those issues can’t wait. So, let’s look at our basic day as we think it should go, and go from there. It actually starts with the end of the previous day. Every day before I leave the office, I make up a very short list for myself- 3 items- no more, no less. Those are the things, regardless of how much time it takes that I must get done tomorrow. I try to include 1 of the 3 items as a chore that may have been on the list too long, or one I don’t really care to do…which is why it’s been undone so long. These 3 items may take 15 minutes to do, and everything else is icing on the cake. If it takes ‘till 9:00 PM to get them done before I go home, so be it…that’s the commitment and it

can’t be broken. It really works, and you’d be surprised how many things get done that have been languishing about which are now checked off your done list. Another thing I try to do is to look around and find something every day that I’m just plain tired of looking at- and get it filed, put or thrown away. A little at a time makes a difference in a small office, and in a short time you’ll see progress, which is very encouraging to continue in your task of clawing your way to the top. But what happens if no matter how hard you try, you can’t get out from under? It’s easy…time to get help. I’m sure you are very good at what you do, which is why people call you to do it… and are willing to pay you- bonus! But, how many things do you do that you really detest doing? On top of that, you really don’t do it very well at all. Look at what you charge for your time in your professional life, and then look at the ancillary things you are doing that could be done by another person who actually loves doing what you hate at a much lesser cost! Now, look at your hourly or daily rate and what you would be paying another highly qualified person to do those tasks, and you’d see the outcome is the tasks being done with greater efficiency while you are working at your regular rate. Hiring a person to help you should not be a cost- it should be an investment, that pays you back in multiples since it gives you more time to work at your regular hourly or daily rate. Your schedule will be more organized, you will get in more billable hours or days, and things will go a heck of a lot smoother. So, when you feel you are up to your neck in work or just can’t handle the flow, ask for help- it should do wonders for your blood pressure as well as your bottom line! Neal A. If you’re asked to name a premium quality, celebratory sparkling wine chances are you will choose Champagne. There are so many other sparkling wines from different countries but true Champagne is still synonymous with top shelf quality. Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, Sekt from Germany, Cremant from France, Espumante from Portugal, each one may be a high quality sparkling wine but nothing says “special” like Champagne – except when it’s Franciacorta! Franciacorta is produced in a very specific area of Lombardy in the north Central region of Italy. The northern border is Lake Iseo which moderates the climate in the vineyards by cooling during the hot summer months and protecting the vines from harsh winter cold. The Lake is responsible for the diurnal swings in temperature which allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. This region has always produced wine but it was only in the mid-20th century that sparkling wine came into focus. It was 1961 when Berlucchi first produced a quality sparkler inspired by Champagne. Six years later Franciacorta was awarded DOC status. In 1990 twenty-nine producers founded the Consortium of Franciacorta. By 1992 there were 200 members including growers, winemakers and bottlers. An upgrade to DOCG status was conferred in 1995. The first certified organic winery, Barone Pizzini, was designated in 2002. Currently there are thirty-seven certified organic wineries with many more practicing organic farming but not yet certified. The goal is to reach one hundred percent certified organic within five to six years. Clearly, Franciacorta is committed to quality and the Consortium serves to protect the brand. This goal is accomplished through closely monitoring the process from planting through production. Members are as interested in the success of the whole as much as their individual success. Franciacorta covers about 8,000 acres including 6 separate viticultural zones with individual micro-climates. Unlike France, there is no cru or single vineyard designation and most Franciacortas are blends from various zones. However, Villa Crespia makes wine from each one of the six zones seeking to bottle the unique expression of each zone. All Franciacorta sparklers are made in metodo tradizionale, meaning secondary fermentation in the bottle. The grapes used in the production of Franciacorta are Chardonnay, Pinot Nero (Noir) and Pinot Bianco. The percentage of Pinot Bianco is capped at fifty percent. There may also be up to ten percent Erbamat, a white grape which contributes acidity. There are five separate styles of Franciacorta – Franciacorta, Franciacorta Satèn, Franciacorta Rosé (our personal favorite), Franciacorta Vintage Millesimato, and Franciacorta Riserva. The last category is made only in exceptional years and is always a single-vintage wine. Riserva is aged on the lees for a minimum of five years. Non-vintage is aged on the lees for at least 18 months while the Satèn and Rosé age at least 24 months. The Satèn style produces a softer, creamier texture as a result of fewer atmospheres (pressure per square inch at sea
