Welcome to our January How to Choose edition. Ever wonderful how in the world you’re going to find the perfect pediatrician or photographer, maid service or massage? Our writers have some great ideas on how to look for, find, vet, and connect with the perfect person for the job. Hope their ideas helps.

A new year is a great time to reset your life no matter what age or stage you’re in. I’m at an age where my friends are beginning to contemplate retirement and it’s been an interesting process to observe. So many of them haven’t dropped out of the workforce as much as shifted to a Plan B. Realizing they still have so much to give, they’re doing so in some interesting ways. Of course, God is never through with us and He’s the author of creativity. You might be surprised and thrilled at the ways He wants to use you next.

As for me, I have the best job in the world. More than 20 years ago, I had no idea how many amazing people I would meet and work with through this magazine. I’ve seen Arlington and Mansfield grow by leaps and bounds and become an even better place to live and work. I feel humbled that God has allowed me to be a part of this community and hope I can do so for 20 years more.

THE ONLY MESSAGE THAT MATTERS

A SIMPLE AND CLEAR APPROACH TO SHARING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

Charles Spurgeon, often referred to as the “Prince of Preachers” , once said, “Every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor.”

I have a feeling that with words like those, that old “prince” wouldn’t be allowed to preach behind most pulpits today. We live in a generation that reads the same Bible Spurgeon read; but has somehow come to very different conclusions.

Spurgeon’s interpretation of the Scriptures led him to believe that evangelism was not only a command to every believer, but also an evidence as to whether or not a person had experienced true conversion. Much has changed since those

words of his. Evangelism has now become more of a suggestion. It has become optional. We now live in a time where the average professing Christian (at least many of the ones that I speak with) cannot even articulate the message of the Gospel in any clear and logical way. Isn’t that crazy? They are claiming that their belief in the message of the Gospel has saved them from eternal damnation, yet they cannot even articulate what that message is! As preposterous as this now sounds to me, I must confess; I used to be one of these people myself.

So, I write this article to help all of those who find themselves — like I used to be — a bit hazy as to what this message and the call of the believer is.

Let me start by being very clear about something: There is only one message that will save a mans soul. It is the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ . We can tell others that we will pray for them. We can be kind and generous to them. We can invite them to church. We can tell them about how God has changed our lives. All these things are beautiful and good, but we must not fool ourselves; none of them will save their soul. There is only one way for them to be saved from eternal damnation; They must know and believe the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I hope that the following will be a simple and concise starting point for all who need a little help understanding and articulating the message of the Gospel…

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

When explaining what the message of the gospel is, I have found it helpful to start with the actual definition of the word; The word “Gospel” in the Greek means good news The reason why this is helpful is because it leads to a very logical starting point when sharing the message, which is this: The only reason there is good news is because there was bad news first. The reason why the good news is so good is because the bad news is so bad. You could say that the Gospel is the medicine for man’s disease.

Now I would ask you; Would the doctor hand you a bottle of medicine without first giving you the diagnosis? No, that wouldn’t make sense. To go a step further; the worse the diagnosis is, the more one treasures the medicine that heals him. When we attempt to share the good news without first starting with the bad news, we strip the Gospel of its power. Remember, the Old Testament (Law) came before the New Testament (Grace). There is a reason for that. Man has no need for a Savior until he first sees that he is condemned.

THE BAD NEWS

So, what is this bad news? It could be summed up with 3 simple statements: 1) God gave a Law to mankind. 2) All men (with only one exception) have broken that Law. 3) All of mankind is now sentenced to eternal death as punishment for the crime. Let’s look at these briefly:

1) God Gave a Law – At Mt. Sinai God issued His moral law: The Ten Commandments. Most people seem to have heard of these commandments… You shall have no other Gods before me, you shall not

murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, you shall not commit adultery, etc… (Exodus 20:1-17)

2) All Men have Broken that Law – The Scriptures say, “all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God”. (Romans 3:23) Remember, the standard was perfection; nothing less. Jesus cleared up all confusion as to the divine standard when He issued statements such as this; “if you even look at a woman with lust, you have committed adultery in your heart.” (Matthew 5:28) And that if you are even angry with your brother, you’ve committed murder. (Paraphrase of Matthew 5:22) There is a name in the Scriptures for one who breaks the Law of God; he is called a sinner. That is the essential problem of all mankind: SIN

3) All of Humanity is now Sentenced to Eternal Death - As the Scriptures say, “the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23) It is important to remember that His punishment flows from His goodness. One of the qualities of His goodness is that He is a just God; meaning that justice is one of His attributes. If He was not just, He would not be good. The just punishment for a creature, breaking the Law of God, and rebelling against the infinite and Almighty Creator of the universe is eternal death — eternal execution. This is the sentence that rests upon every living being born into this world. I often say that all men have been born into a “holding cell”, where they will live for a short while, until they breathe their last breath. After that: The courtroom awaits. The sentence will be issued. The gavel will come down. This is the diagnosis. THIS IS THE BAD NEWS.

THE GOOD NEWS

The Good News (Gospel) can also be summed up with 3 simple statements: 1) God Gave His Son – Jesus. 2) His Son fulfilled the Law. 3) His Son took our Punishment upon Himself. Let’s look at these briefly:

1) God Gave His Son – Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Triune God, came to earth in the flesh. He was fully God and fully man.

2) His Son Fulfilled the Law – Jesus did what we could not do; He fulfilled the Law. He met the divine standard of perfection and lived a sinless life.

3) His Son took our Punishment upon Himself – God fulfilled the righteous requirement of justice by having His Son,

Jesus Christ, take our punishment upon Himself on the cross. He died in our place. The theological term is “Substitutionary Atonement”. Jesus Christ was the sacrificial Lamb of God to the world.

HOW CAN ONE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE?

So, now the question is: How does one take advantage of what Jesus did on the cross? Or maybe you could put it this way; How does one take the medicine for their disease? The answer is simple; all they must do is believe. They must believe that simple message above. They must believe themselves to be a sinner, whose only hope for forgiveness and redemption, is the blood of Jesus Christ. Any man/woman who truly believes this message will be granted eternal life as a gift of God. The Scriptures say that the Spirit of God will indwell him and cause him to be “born again”. He will be a new creation and will become a child of the Living God who will inherit Eternal Life. As the rest of the passage goes, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.” (Romans 6:23)

How does one know if they have truly been saved? Is it really that easy?

The word of God is clear; there are two kinds of “belief”. There is a genuine belief that will lead to salvation, and there is a false belief (dead faith) as well. (James 2:14-26) So how does one know the difference? The Scriptures say that if the belief is genuine, it will be accompanied by repentance . (Acts 26:20, Luke3:8) This means that a man/woman who has truly believed the Gospel will turn from their sins and begin to pursue a life of holiness and righteousness. They will bear good fruit. This is why Jesus said, “you will know them by their fruits”. (Matthew 7:1620) Any person who claims to be a believer who does not turn from their sin is a liar. (1John 1:6) The life of a true believer will be the evidence of their salvation.

My Friend, you have now heard the simple message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the only message that will save the souls of men. Learn it and Proclaim it!

HWATER OAK FOOT AND ANKLE SURGERY

DON’T JUST LIVE WITH FOOT PAIN

eel pain? Foot and ankle pain? Bunions? Ingrown toenails? Plantar Fasciitis? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Matthew McCabe, MS, DPM wants you to know you don’t have to live with pain in your feet and ankles and write it off as simply a sign of aging. As a fellowship trained podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. McCabe sees patients every day who have resigned themselves to living with these and other foot-related problems. No more!

At his Mansfield practice, Water Oak Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. McCabe treats patients from Arlington, Midlothian, Grand Prairie, Burleson, Alvarado and Cedar Hill and beyond who are suffering with issues ranging from fractures, wounds, neuroma, ankle and foot deformity, diabetes-related foot problems, and other conditions and offers them each know-you-by-name care with results to help get them back in the game.

PATIENT-CENTRIC CARE

Dr. McCabe makes it a top priority to give patients an active role in their care, presenting them with options when it comes to their treatment plan. And though he is fellowship trained in limb salvage, reconstructive surgery, and orthoplastics (a field that combines plastics techniques and orthopedic techniques with the

goal of salvaging limbs after trauma or chronic wounds and infection), he always considers surgery a last resort only after all non-surgical options have been explored.

As a young man, Matthew McCabe always knew he wanted to be a doctor and help people live longer, happier, healthier lives. “Podiatry has proven to be the perfect specialty for me because it encompasses a wide variety of pathology and allows me to really impact the lives of my patients,”

Dr. McCabe said. “Although I’m focused on the foot and ankle, I’ll see diabetic patients, patients with deformities, patients with arthritis or fractures, athletes and weekend warriors—and everything in between—so it never ceases to be challenging and enriching for me. I also enjoying the continuing education aspect of my specialty. There’s always something new to learn.”

" Foot-(noun) device used for finding Legos in the dark."

No two days are ever the same at Water Oak Foot and Ankle Surgery. “I’m in the clinic four days a week and in surgery one. On a surgery day, I might perform a bunion procedure, fix an ankle fracture, do a complex muscle, or skin flap, an ankle scope, and a hammer

toe—all in one day.” And at the end of that day, he knows he’s been able to help them all.

INDIVIDUALIZED CARE

Dr. McCabe spends a lot of time educating others about exactly what a podiatrist does. “Even other doctors don't realize podiatrists perform surgery that encompasses not only the foot but the ankle as well,” he said. “Because I’m fellowship trained in limb salvage, reconstruction, and orthoplastics, I’m really able to impact my patients’ lives through salvaging a person’s limb after trauma or chronic wounds and infection and see them recovery and live a full life again. It’s extremely rewarding.”

Dr. McCabe and his team are diligent about offering patients options tailored to their individual needs. “One of the best things I can do for any patient is just to slow down and really listen to them,” Dr. McCabe said. “Then, I want to take the time to explain to them, in words they understand, all of their treatment options—conservative and surgical—how each treatment works, and the pros and cons of each approach. The more the patient understands about their condition and all the treatment options available to them, the better decision they can make about their care. It’s my job—and my blessing—to empower patients in their medical decision-making process.”

MEET DR. MCCABE

Dr. McCabe is originally from Denver, Colorado. While growing up in Colorado he participated in various sports and outdoor activities. The injuries he incurred during these years helped lay the groundwork for his curiosity in medicine and surgery. He completed his undergraduate work at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, and then went on to Rosalind Franklin University for his medical training in North Chicago, Illinois. During his years at Rosalind Franklin University, he earned a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration. After graduation, he completed his foot and ankle surgical residency at Christus Saint Patrick Hospital and the Center for Orthopaedics in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Residency training was focused on foot and ankle surgery with an emphasis on trauma and sports medicine. As a resident, Dr. McCabe served as one of the team physicians at McNeese State University covering the

football and track teams. He was also the first resident of his program. His fellowship training was completed at the Midwest Foot and Ankle Fellowship in Omaha, Nebraska where he focused on orthoplastics and major surgical reconstruction of the lower extremity.

Dr. Matthew McCabe DPM, MS is licensed in the state of Texas and is an Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is board certified in foot surgery as well as Reconstructive Rearfoot Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. When not on the job, he enjoys spending time with his family as well as hunting and fishing.

Whether your complaint is heel pain, foot and ankle pain, arthritis, foot fractures, ankle fractures, bunion deformities, Achilles tendon issues, or something else, Dr. McCabe and his team will offer you options tailored to your individual needs.

“The more patients understand about their condition and all the treatment options available to them, the better decisions they can make about their care,” Dr. McCabe said. Find out more and schedule an appointment at WaterOakFootandAnkle.com.

LET’S MAKE MENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY IN 2025

For many of us, the holidays brought added anxiety. Attending parties, shopping for gifts, traveling, spending time with extended family, not to mention the financial stress of all of the above can easily lead to depression and anxiety. Now, it’s the new year and the perfect time to reevaluate where you are in life, commit to caring for your wellbeing, and prioritize your mental health.

Fortunately, we live in a time when the importance of mental health is increasingly recognized and openly discussed with care more accessible than ever. Connections Wellness Group has led the way in this positive shift and is now making mental health even more accessible by offering in-person counseling services, online counseling services (teletherapy), and hybrid models combining in-person therapy and teletherapy.

With teletherapy, Connections Wellness clients are able to receive counseling from a licensed mental health professional from the comfort and security of their home. Telehealth services are convenient and cost-effective and enable you to receive the counseling you need without having to travel to an office helping you make your mental health the priority it should be.

Connections Wellness online counseling

services come to you via a secure, confidential video link established through high-speed internet, allowing you to conduct a visit with your therapist, doctor, or psychiatrist via your PC, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone as long as you’re in a quiet, private space. Instead of waiting weeks or months to see a therapist, telehealth makes it possible to connect with the care you need in 48 hours and to see that therapist as often as you need going forward.

Teletherapy services allow Connections Wellness counselors to reach individuals living busy lives, (and who isn’t?) individuals affected by symptoms that make it difficult for them to leave their home, and individuals living in rural areas where mental-health services may not be accessible. Through teletherapy, these individuals receive the same services they would receive in person, except through an online tele-video platform.

This tele-video platform can be utilized for group therapy providing a safe, structured, virtual environment for people with similar life experiences whether they’re dealing with general mental health such as depression and anxiety, dual diagnosis, substance use disorders, trauma, or are members of Front Line, Connection Wellness’ first-responder group.

AN ORTHODONTIST

“With Invisalign for Kids, I have seen amazing results on my own children creating room for the larger adult teeth and avoiding expanders and early metal braces.”

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT IS A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT, SO SELECTING A SKILLED AND REPUTABLE PROFESSIONAL ENSURES THAT THE PROCESS IS EFFECTIVE, COMFORTABLE, AND TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS. HERE ARE KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN ORTHODONTIST.

Start by checking the orthodontist’s credentials. An orthodontist is a dentist who has undergone additional years of specialized training in diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities. Ensure that the professional you are considering is a board-certifi ed orthodontist, which means they have completed the necessary education and passed rigorous examinations. Board certification is a good indicator of a higher level of knowledge, skill, and commitment to staying up to date with advancements in orthodontics.

Experience is another important factor. The more experience an orthodontist has, the better equipped they are to handle various types of cases, from simple corrections to more complex dental issues. Ask about their specific experience with the type of treatment you need, whether it’s traditional braces, clear aligners like Invisalign, or other specialized options.

Reputation and patient reviews can provide insight into the orthodontist’s expertise and customer service. Seek out recommendations from friends, family members, or your regular dentist. Additionally, online reviews and testimonials

can be helpful, though it’s important to read them carefully. Look for patterns in the reviews, focusing on aspects such as the orthodontist’s professionalism, the quality of care provided, and overall patient satisfaction.

A personal consultation is crucial when making your decision. During this meeting, pay attention to the orthodontist’s communication style. Are they patient, thorough, and willing to answer all your questions? A good orthodontist will take the time to explain the treatment options, timelines, and costs in detail, ensuring you are fully informed before deciding. They should also evaluate your oral health thoroughly to provide a personalized treatment plan that suits your needs.

Technology plays an increasingly important role in orthodontics. Ask about the technology the orthodontist uses in their practice. Modern orthodontic treatments, like 3D imaging, digital X-rays, and advanced clear aligner systems, provide more accurate results and can make the treatment process more comfortable and efficient. An orthodontist who invests in the latest equipment is likely focused

on providing the best outcomes for their patients.

Cost is an important factor when choosing an orthodontist, but it should not be the sole determinant. Orthodontic treatment can vary in price depending on the complexity of the case, the type of treatment (such as traditional braces or clear aligners), and the length of the treatment plan. During your consultation, the orthodontist should provide a clear and detailed breakdown of the costs, including any potential additional fees. Many orthodontic offices offer flexible payment plans or financing options to make the treatment more affordable.

Lastly, consider the overall atmosphere of the orthodontist’s office. A clean, organized, and welcoming environment reflects a high standard of care. Additionally, the friendliness and professionalism of the staff are important, as you will be interacting with them frequently throughout your treatment.

By evaluating the orthodontist’s credentials, experience, reputation, technology, and the offi ce environment, you can confi dently choose the right professional to guide you through your orthodontic journey.

A DERMATOLOGIST

“Choosing the right dermatologist team is so imperative. A good dermatologist will look you over from head to toe, scanning your skin for potential cancers. Early detection is essential. For cosmetic procedures, it is very important to find a dermatologist who listens and understands your goals. Choose a team with experience and the expertise to carry out the procedures in a safe manner with exceptional outcomes.”

Dr. Jeannine Hoang

UNITED DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES

DERMATOLOGISTS DIAGNOSE AND TREAT OVER 3,000 CONDITIONS AND DISEASES OF THE SKIN, HAIR, NAILS, AND MUCOUS MEMBRANES. A FEW HEALTH ISSUES THAT CAN BE IMPROVED WITH DERMATOLOGIC CARE INCLUDE ACNE, ECZEMA, PSORIASIS, HAIR LOSS, ROSACEA, VARICOSE VEINS, AND SIGNS OF AGING.

There is also a key preventive role of these doctors through annual skin checks. Using professional strategies and equipment, dermatologists can fi nd issues with the skin that may not be immediately apparent. Early detection of cancer concerns is vital, and treatment of melanoma can result in a cure in many cases.

While it is generally important to see a dermatologist, it is also critical to fi nd one who is credible and can best meet your needs. Several considerations can help in your selection process.

First, verify that the dermatologist is board certifi ed. Board certifi cation will ensure that the doctor has completed a medical degree, an internship, and a residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. You also know that they have passed an exam by the American Osteopathic Board

of Dermatology or the American Board of Dermatology.

Ask your primary care physician for a dermatologist referral. You can also get recommendations from other doctors or loved ones. Call each doctor and set up an initial consultation, in which you can ask the doctor additional questions.

Confi rm that the dermatologist is focused on treating you rather than promoting products or services that will not directly help your condition. The doctor should view you as a patient, not a consumer. Verify that appointments will never feel rushed. Your dermatologist should provide time to explain everything thoroughly, including tests and treatments.

Ask the doctor about their experience treating your condition. If a dermatologist has subspecialty training in nail and hair disorders or skin cancer surgery, that tells you they have invaluable knowledge

related to your diagnosis. Ask what their experience is with your disease.

Check about modes of contact outside business hours. If you receive a treatment and start to have an adverse response, you will want to be able to reach the doctor right away. Rather than fi nding out that the person you chose to trust with your skin is unavailable after-hours, ask about evening and weekend contact upfront.

Make sure you can connect. While the criteria for professional relationships differ from personal ones, you still want to feel that you can communicate. As you ask the dermatologist questions in your initial appointment, be sure they answer you in plain language and are focused on your comfort.

By following the steps above, you can be confi dent that you have done your due diligence to fi nd a physician who will be a good fit for you.

When you are looking to enhance your beauty, put your skin in the hands of the trusted Pros at United Dermatology. PAs, Josana Collins and Kim-The Tran provide top-notch medspa services like injectables, neurotoxins and fillers. Our aestheticians can complete your look with laser hair removal, Hydrafacials, skin pens, chemical peels and more!

AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

“All orthopedic surgeons go through a five-year residency training that covers a broad range specialties in orthopedics. Most orthopedic surgeons will complete a sub-specialty additional training year, called the fellowship. The areas of fellowships include Sports medicine, Shoulder and Elbow, Joint Reconstruction, Trauma, Foot and Ankle, Hand, Orthopedic Oncology, Pediatrics, and Spine. This allows an Orthopedic Surgeon to gain focused training in a particular area of interest, which can greatly assist honing in on finding a surgeon who can address your specific area of concern, and treatment needs.”

G. Todd Moore, D.O.

& SPORTS MEDICINE

NOBODY WANTS TO BE SHOPPING FOR A SURGEON BECAUSE — LET’S FACE IT — NOBODY REALLY WANTS TO UNDERGO SURGERY. BUT IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH YOUR BONES, JOINTS, MUSCLES, LIGAMENTS, TENDONS, OR NERVES THAT HAVEN’T RESPONDED TO NON-INVASIVE TREATMENT, IT’S TIME TO LOOK FOR THE BEST ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON IN YOUR AREA.

An orthopedic surgeon (or orthopedic surgeon) is a surgeon who’s been educated and trained in the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons work closely with other healthcare providers, often serving as consultants to other physicians in need of their expertise

If you’ve been told by your doctor that it’s time to see an orthopedic surgeon, you’re probably having a mix of feelings — relieved there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but also anxious about undergoing surgery. That’s perfectly normal. Putting in the time and footwork to locate the perfect orthopedic surgeon for you and your situation can serve to put many of your fears to rest. If your primary care physician has recommended you see an orthopedic surgeon, your doctor is a good place to start. Ask them to recommend local surgeons they trust. Run their list past family and friends for their input.

Consider each recommended surgeon’s credentials and experience. You can fi nd a lot of that information online. Some of the things you’ll want to note are whether potential orthopedic surgeons have a history of malpractice claims or disciplinary actions and whether they’re board-certifi ed. Board certifi cation tells you they have the necessary training, skills, and experience to provide orthopedic care, plus the extra hours and research needed to obtain board certifi cation.

Next, read some of their online reviews. What do former patients say about the doctor’s communication skills and the competence of their medical staff? Call and make consultation appointments to vet them further. Don’t be shy about asking pointed questions. You can bet those doctors are just as discriminating about the professionals with whom they do business.

Ask the surgeon about their experience. Orthopedic procedures can be complex and specialized. Ask how many patients

with your specific condition they’ve treated and what their success rates were. Ask what the complication rates are — for the procedure in general and for the procedure with your specifi c complications.

Find out which hospitals or ambulatory surgery centers each surgeon is affi liated with and research their quality of care. Studies show that patients at top-rated hospitals have fewer complications and better survival rates. Consider the hospitals’ locations in relation to your home or offi ce, as you may have frequent follow-up and rehabilitation visits and will want a convenient location.

Look for an orthopedic surgeon who communicates freely, answers your questions, and addresses your concerns without talking down to you or making you feel rushed. Ideally, you want a surgeon who will take the time to educate you about your condition, respect your treatment decisions, keep you well-informed and educated about the whole process, and partner with you to get you back to 100%.

AN URGENT CARE FACILITY

“When choosing an urgent care facility, find out how long it’s been in operation and how long the providers have been practicing there. Longevity means they are familiar with you and your family. Also, a facility that has two providers per shift allows them to spend more time with you and offers the patients more choices, such as a male or female provider.”

Jeffery Fisher, MD

MANSFIELD URGENT CARE & FAMILY MEDICINE

IF YOU’VE EVER SAT FOR HOURS IN A HOSPITAL’S EMERGENCY ROOM SURROUNDED BY FAR SICKER OR MORE BADLY INJURED PEOPLE, YOU PROBABLY FELT EQUAL PARTS THANKFUL THAT YOUR “EMERGENCY” WASN’T DIRE ENOUGH TO MOVE YOU TO THE TOP OF THE LIST AND FRUSTRATED WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU’D BE THERE FOR A WHILE.

That scenario led to the creation of urgent care facilities. Urgent cares are sameday clinics that can handle a variety of conditions that aren’t life-threatening but require immediate attention. Urgent care is a great option for times when your doctor’s office is closed or can’t accommodate you with a timely appointment.

The fi rst thing to decide is whether your emergency is a candidate for urgent care or whether it warrants a trip to the emergency room. Most urgent care clinics are well equipped to handle conditions such as fever without a rash, minor trauma, a common sprain, certain types of broken bones (usually on the limbs), painful urination, persistent diarrhea, severe sore throat, or vomiting. If you’re unsure whether your condition is life-threatening or not, it’s always a good idea to opt for an emergency facility and let the experts be the judge.

The moment you need care isn’t necessarily the best time to shop for an urgent care facility. It’s far better to evaluate the options in your area now and decide which one you’ll visit when the time comes. Begin with facilities that are reasonably close to your home. While an earache, rash, muscle sprain, or minor abrasion isn’t life-threatening, someone suffering from them won’t feel like traveling all over the city looking for treatment.

Look online for facilities in your area and visit their websites to see what level of care they provide, their hours of operation, and what insurance plans they accept. Some facilities offer 24/7 care. Some don’t. If you don’t have insurance or they, don’t take yours, but you decide to go there anyway, most facilities will accept your credit card or check and may even allow you to arrange a payment plan over time. But that’s another decision it’s best to make ahead of time.

If you live in an urban or suburban area, you probably have several options close to you. And if your medical condition isn’t something they treat, any of them should be able to stabilize you and then help you get transported to an emergency facility. If you have kids, look for a facility with a doctor qualified to offer pediatric care and a kid-friendly bedside manner. Ask other parents about their experiences.

Also, see what services they offer in addition to traditional urgent care. Many centers provide preventive care such as sports physicals and immunizations or can assist you in managing chronic problems such as diabetes, saving you all that time waiting in the doctor or hospital waiting rooms. Do remember that if you have a life-threatening emergency, it’s always a good idea to head to an emergency room or call an ambulance to get you there as quickly as possible.

A COSMETIC DENTIST

“If you don’t have the smile you desire, you may benefit from dental implants, crowns, or porcelain veneers, contact a cosmetic dentist who has years of experience and a gallery of before and after photos so you can see for yourself what a difference a beautiful smile can make.”

Dr. John Bauer MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY

IF MOTHER NATURE DIDN’T BLESS YOU WILL A GREAT SMILE, TODAY’S COSMETIC DENTISTRY COULD GIVE YOU A SMILE YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED. COSMETIC DENTISTS CAN RESHAPE WORN TEETH, STRAIGHTEN CROOKED SMILES, AND REPLACE TEETH THAT ARE MISSING, WHICH CAN HAVE AN ENORMOUS IMPACT.

Beyond improving your appearance, cosmetic dentistry can benefit you in numerous other ways. Smiling without embarrassment helps build your selfconfi dence, putting you at ease at work and in social situations. But fi rst, you’ve got to fi nd the right dentist for the job.

Ask for referrals. If you have a relative or friend who’s had cosmetic dental work, ask how satisfi ed they are with the result. If you already go to or know a dentist who doesn’t perform cosmetic procedures, ask them for recommendations. Depending on your situation, they might also recommend other specialists before you undergo cosmetic treatment.

Look at online reviews and local publications. Patient reviews and testimonials can tell you a lot about dental procedure success and the overall offi ce atmosphere. A simple search can yield a wealth of information from past patients on the cosmetic dentist you’re considering. Look at before and after photos and verify that the practice has the technology

required to perform procedures you might be interested in.

One excellent way to validate the credentials of a cosmetic dentist is to fi nd out if they’re a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Members of the AACD receive extensive training beyond dental school on the latest advances and techniques in cosmetic dentistry. They’re also required to pass rigorous written and oral exams and take regular continuing education classes to keep abreast of the latest developments in cosmetic dentistry. You can also check the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, which has licensee information available online.

Consider their location. This might seem trivial, but cosmetic procedures can sometimes require multiple offi ce visits, and you probably want a dentist who is reasonably close to your home or work. You may also consider in-office comforts such as various types of sedation, headphones,

or less intrusive x-ray technology and 3D scanning.

Ask about payment options. Talk to your insurance company to see what sorts of services it covers and confi rm with the practice that they will accept the type of payment you’d prefer — or if they offer payment options that will make the cost of service reasonable for your budget.

Schedule an initial consultation. When done correctly, cosmetic dentistry is safe, effective, and long-lasting. But done incorrectly, it can lead to long-term problems. During the consultation, explain your desired outcome and listen carefully to the proposed treatment options and the expected result. And don’t hesitate to ask questions about any lingering doubts you may have.

Finally, as you’re considering your options, remember that a beautiful smile can build your self-confidence and open doors you never knew existed — while it can sometimes come with an investment of time and money, the dividends can be worth it.

A PLASTIC SURGEON

“Patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction are of the utmost importance as well as getting to know each patient and taking time to listen and answer their questions and concerns. Understanding that each patient’s cosmetic and health goals are as unique as they are.”

Anthony Nakamura, MD, FACS,PA ACCENT ON YOU

ARE YOU READY TO IMPROVE WHAT MOTHER NATURE GAVE YOU? DO YOU WANT TO RESTORE YOUR BODY AFTER HAVING CHILDREN OR LOSING WEIGHT, ROCK A SLIMMER, SMOOTHER FIGURE, OR TURN BACK THE YEARS ON YOUR FACIAL APPEARANCE? IF SO, NOW COMES THE NEXT STEP — SELECTING A PLASTIC SURGEON.

With so many to choose from, it is natural to feel a bit overwhelmed, but fortunately, it’s easier than you think. Resist the urge to buy into the hype and follow a few simple steps that can help you choose a plastic surgeon that’s right for you.

First, remember that there is no substitute for credentials, reputation, and experience when choosing a plastic surgeon. Any licensed physician can say they perform appearance-improving surgery, but there’s one easy way to determine if they are qualified to call themselves a plastic surgeon. Physicians who specialize in plastic surgery have completed a general surgery residency followed by a plastic surgery residency or an integrated residency that includes both. Some plastic surgeons opt to then complete a fellowship in a subspecialty, such as aesthetic surgery. If you’re uncertain about a surgeon’s credentials and training, ask, then validate. A surgeon who hesitates to answer should throw up the red fl ag.

Board certification is another way to determine if a plastic surgeon has the training and focus you are seeking. Look for surgeons who are board certified in the correct fi eld of expertise. Keep in mind that only physicians board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery can call legitimately themselves plastic surgeons.

It’s important to note that physicians such as maxillofacial surgeons and otolaryngologists (ENTs) may perform facial cosmetic surgery. Many of these medical specialists have completed a postresidency fellowship focused on plastic, reconstructive, or cosmetic surgery. For example, an ENT can complete a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Just as you would ask a plastic surgeon about credentials and board certification, ask these physicians as well, then verify. Next, schedule consultations with at least three plastic surgeons so you can compare. Develop a list of questions and bring them to your consultation. You should feel your

surgeon has genuinely listened to your goals and concerns and has answered your questions to your satisfaction without making you feel rushed or pressured into making a decision. Note whether or not options and recommendations are provided and compared based on your unique needs, budget, and time available for recovery.

Before you leave, ask to see before and after pictures of actual patients. Also, notice the staff and how they treat you. Before and after surgery, you will often interact with them. Lastly, ask for patient references and contact them. These will be people who have agreed to be used as references in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. They can provide insight and opinions that are honest and real compared to online reviews with unverifi able ratings.

If you still can’t determine which plastic surgeon to choose, keep looking. Go on more consultations. A decision as important as this shouldn’t be rushed.

“Not all providers are equally knowledgeable about hormone therapy. It is important to find the experts in the field to help provide you with the most individualized plan of care possible. Hormones are not ‘one-size-fits-all’ - providers must focus on unique treatment plans for YOU, to make sure your personal needs are met.”

INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE

HORMONE REPLACEMENT CENTER

HORMONES CONTROL THE MAJORITY OF YOUR BODY’S BASIC FUNCTIONS. THEY WORK AS YOUR CELL-TO-CELL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM, COORDINATING THINGS LIKE MOOD, APPETITE, DESIRE, GROWTH, IMMUNE FUNCTION, AND ENERGY LEVELS. IF YOUR HORMONES BECOME EVEN SLIGHTLY IMBALANCED, IT CAN HAVE A HUGE NEGATIVE IMPACT ON YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH.

When we age, hormone levels decline, which results in an array of unsettling symptoms. Unexplained weight gain?

Low energy? No sex drive? Brain fog? Increasingly, people are turning to hormone replacement therapies (HRT) to greatly reduce or eliminate symptoms. Choosing a qualified hormone therapy center can help you reclaim your youthful self.

You don’t have to live with mood swings, weight gain, decreased libido, and loss of vitality caused by declining hormone levels. In recent years, hormone therapies and their overall availability have advanced significantly. These treatments have become very popular due to their success in helping men and women enjoy a more youthful level of health and vitality.

Maybe you’ve seen one or more hormone therapy centers open up in your neighborhood or near your work. How do you choose a center that’s right for you?

The fi rst step involves a little investigative work. Search for hormone therapy centers

in your area and take a look at two or three of them. If you go to the staff pages of local therapy center websites, you can see the names of the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other professional staff. A reputable center will be headed up by either a medical doctor (MD) or nurse practitioner (FNPC) and may or may not have several other healthcare staff members to assist.

Look at the services offered and make sure they include a variety of hormone replacement therapies. Most will provide HRT for women and for men, but some stick to one or the other. So, it’s important to check that out before showing up at the front desk. You should also fi nd out what type of therapy is offered — there are many different vehicles for therapy, from tablets to patches to creams to subcutaneous pellets.

Next, it’s time to do a little leg work. Reach out to the practice you are considering to ask questions. Even though you haven’t

made an appointment, the staff should welcome you and take time to answer your questions. Some questions you might ask include: What are the benefits of bioidentical hormone therapy for men and women? Do you offer prescriptive vitamin supplements to support wellness and nutrition? What types of tests will you require to determine what therapies I need? What does hormone replacement therapy typically cost? If the staff members answer your questions professionally and to your satisfaction, that’s a great sign.

Also, glance around the facility itself. Take home some brochures or any other materials they’re able to provide. One consideration still worth mentioning is location. Choose a treatment center that meets the other criteria but is also convenient for you. Certain hormone replacement therapies may require more frequent visits. You don’t want to have to drive more than necessary to get the help you need to live your best life.

A HOME REMODELER

“Of course, when hiring a contractor, you want to do all the right things like interview the contractor, check their references, lookat pictures of their work, make sure they use licensed trades, and verify insurance. These things are all important but equally important is that you MUST like your contractor and TRUST your contractor. You are entering into a partnership and will work very closely with this person inside your home on a daily basis, so it is important that the chemistry and trust is there.”

Tiffany Young TIFFANY YOUNG & CREW

REMODELING YOUR HOUSE IS NOT ONLY AN INVESTMENT THAT CAN INCREASE YOUR HOME’S VALUE, BUT AN IMPROVEMENT IN ITS LIVABILITY AND FUNCTIONALITY. IT CAN ALSO ENHANCE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. WHILE IT’S FUN TO DREAM ABOUT REMODELING, IT MAY ALSO BE INTIMIDATING.

We’ve all heard about home remodeling projects gone wrong, but keep in mind that this represents a minority of home remodels. At the same time, this doesn’t mean you don’t need to do your homework before choosing a professional remodeler. Some diligence on your part will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience from start to fi nish.

Begin by developing an idea of what you want to do with your remodel, including the scope and your available budget. Then prioritize your list of your needs and wants. As you compile a list of the reputable home remodelers in your area, ask real estate agents and others for referrals. Look at the remodeler’s longevity in the marketplace versus being wooed by offers such as a $7,000 kitchen makeover. Consider his or her reputation as well. A remodeler dedicated to maintaining the highest integrity and standards is a good way to ensure your project’s success.

Additionally, given the scope of your project — a new bathroom, an addition,

a whole home renovation, an upgraded kitchen — look for contractors who focus on the kind of remodeling you want. For example, a remodeler that primarily offers quick, inexpensive kitchen and bathroom remodels may not have the depth and breadth required to adequately perform a whole home renovation.

Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to around three home remodelers, schedule a consultation with each. During the consult, make note of whether the remodeler listens to you and appears willing to collaborate and offer insightful and creative ideas. You must feel that you can “work” with your chosen remodeler. Is he or she a good listener, upfront, honest, communicative, and knowledgeable? Were your questions answered to your satisfaction? Do you trust him or her to pay attention to the big picture as well as the little details?

Next, get an estimate from each home remodeler and compare quotes. Go through them in detail to make sure they are apples to apples. Then ask to see a

few of their projects that were similar in scope and budget. Many remodelers have pictures available on their website and in portfolios.

You may also be able to talk with homeowners about their experience with the remodeler. Ask if the project was completed on time, how change orders were handled, the quality of craftsmanship, and how the remodeler addressed issues because, in most cases, something unforeseen is bound to come up during a project.

When you have chosen a home remodeler, remember that any contract or legally binding document you intend to sign should first be reviewed by an attorney well-versed in construction law. Consider items such as a workmanship warranty, lien releases, and recourse if your project is not completed on time or does not pass inspections. Your peace of mind is worth it.

A COSMETIC SURGEON

Whether you desire a complete body transformation with a mommy makeover or dream of facial rejuvenation, cosmetic surgery can be a positive, life-changing experience. Choosing the right cosmetic surgeon is the key, so educate yourself on all available treatment options, and then select a cosmetic surgeon that’s right for you. You’ll be glad you did.

First and foremost, schedule a consultation with a qualified, experienced, and boardcertifi ed cosmetic surgeon. Being board certified means the surgeon has completed an approved surgical residency or cosmetic surgery fellowship-training program and passed rigorous written and oral examinations that test the surgeon’s knowledge, skill, and surgical competency.

Looking for someone specifically board certifi ed by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) provides assurance they’re accurately trained and experienced, focusing their practice strictly on cosmetic surgery. Diplomates of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery

must complete an advanced 12-month fellowship exclusively in cosmetic surgery, where the surgeon receives comprehensive training in procedures of the face, breast rejuvenation, and body contouring, plus non-surgical aesthetics.

In addition, when interviewing potential cosmetic surgeons, ask them: How did you train for this procedure? Did you have successful and reproducible results? How many surgeries have you performed? Furthermore, make sure you receive straightforward answers to your questions, as you should feel at ease and comfortable. Remember, you are going to be spending quite a bit of time with your cosmetic surgeon, so make sure you have a positive and encouraging connection.

Look carefully at the before and after photos of previous patients. Be sure the images represent actual clients versus stock photos used for marketing purposes. Additionally, pay close attention to patients who have similar qualities as you. Look

for someone with a similar fi gure or facial structure, age, and body frame.

Next, ask your cosmetic surgeon where they perform surgery and whether it is an “accredited” facility.

This could be at a hospital, an outpatient surgery center, or a private offi ce. For a facility to receive accreditation, it must adhere to strict standards in personnel, sanitation, emergency equipment, patient care, anesthesia, and inspections. Therefore, look for national accreditation symbols, including AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO, as competent cosmetic surgeons will proudly discuss their accreditation as a symbol of excellence and patient safety. Lastly, you want to be sure you are welltreated by the offi ce staff. Was the staff friendly and helpful during your visit? Did you receive supporting materials and office pamphlets during your consultation? Were the fees clearly stated on the quote in a non-confusing manner? Remember, you will live with your surgery’s results for years.

MOST OF US HAVE SOMETHING ABOUT OUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE WE’D CHANGE IF WE COULD. WITH THE LATEST ADVANCEMENTS IN COSMETIC SURGERY, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO JUST THAT — MAKING SUBTLE AND NATURAL-LOOKING CHANGES.

AN ATTORNEY

“When selecting a family law attorney it is important to select a firm that is committed to obtaining the best collaborative, ‘families fires’ solution, but has the experience to aggressively advocate on your behalf if all other alternative dispute resolution forms fail.”

Donna J. Smiedt Board Certified Family Law Attorney/Mediator

DONNA SMIEDT LAW

SOONER OR LATER, MOST OF US WILL NEED THE ASSISTANCE OF A GOOD ATTORNEY TO HELP WITH AN ISSUE. IT MIGHT BE TO DRAW UP A WILL, CREATE A TRUST, PURCHASE PROPERTY, OR RENEGOTIATE A LOAN. PERHAPS YOU’RE GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE, BEING SUED, OR THINKING OF BRINGING A LEGAL SUIT. IN A WORST-CASE SCENARIO, YOU MIGHT NEED A DEFENSE ATTORNEY

With about 1.3 million practicing attorneys in the United States, you have no shortage of choices. Here are a few suggestions for choosing an attorney that best meets your legal needs.

You can start with your employer, as some companies have an employee assistance program (EAP). This could be a way of getting a basic legal document, such as a will or power of attorney, done at a reasonable cost. Through an EAP, you might also get a free initial consultation to help you determine whether declaring bankruptcy might make sense or if you have a valid legal claim to fi le a lawsuit before looking for a more specialized attorney to help you handle such matters.

Whether or not your employer has an EAP, you should consider asking family members, friends, and work associates for recommendations. Lawyers that they know can be helpful in your search, even if they specialize in another area of legal

practice. Lawyers tend to know other lawyers, most importantly those who are reputable.

Consider doing some personal research. Several online resources offer listings of attorneys by state and specialty, and many are used by attorneys themselves when looking for legal talent. You can also find lawyer and law firm ratings based on peer reviews, and these may be helpful in choosing between two equally qualifi ed candidates.

Once a consultation is arranged, prepare a list of questions in advance. These could include the following.

“Who will I be working with?” You don’t want to settle on an attorney only to fi nd they’re passing your case off to a junior associate or a paralegal.

“How will you be paid?” Are they charging a fl at fee, an hourly rate, or working on a contingency basis? It’s essential to know how payment and costs will work upfront.

“How much experience do you have dealing with situations like mine?” And don’t be shy about asking about credentials. If you’re creating a trust, for example, you might want an attorney who has earned the designation of AEP (Accredited Estate Planner).

“Do you have questions for me?” A good attorney should be focused on you and your needs and should have some questions of their own to ask you.

It’s also a good idea to check the Texas Bar website to see if any of your prospects have been subject to any disciplinary action. If you notice something, allow your attorney a chance to explain. Finally, consider the personal chemistry you have with the lawyer. Whatever their experience or credentials, you want to work with someone you like and trust, so don’t overlook the importance of personality and personal chemistry.

A GENERAL DENTIST

“We now know that the health of your oral cavity is directly tied to your overall health. I recommend seeing a dentist that understands and values the impact your oral health can have on your whole body and one that focuses on prevention of problems rather than simply fixing what is already broken.”

Talon A Davis, DDS SOUTH ARLINGTON SMILES

FINDING THE RIGHT GENERAL DENTIST TO HELP KEEP YOUR SMILE IN TIP-TOP CONDITION IS VALUABLE FROM BOTH A HEALTH AND A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE. GREAT LOOKING PEARLY WHITES CAN ENHANCE YOUR LIFE, BUT THERE’S MORE TO A BEAUTIFUL SMILE THAN MEETS THE EYE.

We now know that our oral health is linked to our overall health. Untreated or undertreated gum disease can indicate a cause and effect of systemic infl ammation and chronic disease. Plus, by examining oral tissues, a vigilant dentist may detect signs of microbial infections, immune disorders, diseases such as diabetes, and even some cancers.

Start with fundamental requirements. Location and office hours are a good place to start. It’s easier to keep appointments if you don’t have to drive a long distance to get to your dentist. And if you require extended weekday or Saturday appointment options, seek a dentist who can meet your scheduling needs.

While these things are important, they shouldn’t be your only considerations. Especially if you feel anxious about visits to the dentist, a comfortable, stress-free experience may be even more critical. Amenities such as noise-canceling headphones, the ability to watch TV or listen to music in the dental chair, or even just warm blankets can boost your

comfort, as can the option of sedation dentistry. Also, pay attention to the technology a dentist utilizes. The use of advanced technology can save you time, improve your comfort level during diagnosis and treatment, improve safety (digital X-rays and imaging), and help your dentist deliver high-quality dentistry.

Concerning the scope of specialized services offered, general dentists widely differ. Be aware of what’s available, and then decide what will best suit you and your family. Some general dentists strive to perform as many services as possible themselves. Specialty services can include root canals, dental implant placement, periodontal therapy, orthodontics, and more. Others bring dental specialists into the office when needed, practice in a group that includes specialists, or refer patients to specialists with whom they have developed a close relationship — and may co-manage complex cases.

Once you’ve identified a dentist, stop by the offi ce to get a feel for it before scheduling an appointment, if possible.

Does the offi ce appear clean, neat, and orderly? Is the staff helpful and friendly? If the reception area is fi lled with patients griping about a long wait, you may want to look further.

During your appointment, notice how you were greeted and if information is provided about fees and payment plans before treatment is scheduled. Inside the treatment room, note how your dentist, hygienist, and other staff members treat you. Are they pleasant, attentive, communicative, and compassionate? Are diagnoses and treatment recommendations or options well-explained? Your dentist should also review steps you can take to improve your dental health.

If the dentist you select doesn’t work out, avoid complacency, and keep looking. A general dentist who makes you feel comfortable and treats you and your family with care and attention is an asset that’s worth your search time — and there’s sure to be one in your community.

A GENERAL SURGEON

“Take your time. Do your research. Know why you’re going to see a surgeon and ask questions. If you don’t understand the answer, ask the question again. Have a good dialogue. Remember that you are the patient.”

Gary K. Alexander, MD, FACS SURGICAL ASSOCIATES OF MANSFIELD

NOBODY WANTS TO UNDERGO SURGERY. BUT SUPPOSE YOUR DOCTOR HAS EXHAUSTED ALL NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS, AND YOU STILL NEED RELIEF FROM A CONDITION SUCH AS A HERNIA, APPENDICITIS, HEMORRHOIDS, THYROID OR PARATHYROID DISEASE, BREAST CANCER, GALLBLADDER, CROHN’S DISEASE, OR OTHER DEBILITATING CONDITIONS. IN THAT CASE, SURGERY MAY BE YOUR BEST OPTION. TIME TO DO SOME HOMEWORK TO FIND THE MOST QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED SURGEON FOR YOUR NEEDS.

General surgeons are educated and trained in diagnosis and preoperative, operative, and postoperative patient care management. Some surgeons put in the extra time required to offer state-of-theart robotic surgery to provide greater precision and more favorable outcomes.

Begin your search by asking your primary care doctor for references. You may also ask family, friends, and other healthcare providers for recommendations. Research the credentials and experience of the surgeons they recommend on sites such as Healthgrades.com. Look for boardcertifi ed surgeons. Board certifi cation is a voluntary process that demonstrates a surgeon’s commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, and quality patient care. Board-certified surgeons have completed at least fi ve years of residency training following medical school, met all American Board of Surgery training requirements, and successfully completed a rigorous examination process.

As you narrow your list, call each surgeon’s office, and ask for a consult appointment to meet and interview the doctor. When you do, inquire about their experience with the condition you have or the procedure you need. How many patients they’ve treated with your condition? Ask about potential complications you may have and what your risk factors may be.

Ask which hospital or outpatient center they use, then research that facility. Your surgeon’s hospital is your hospital, and patients at top-rated hospitals have fewer complications and better survival rates. Consider whether the hospital’s location is important to you. Frequent trips to the general surgeon’s offi ce or hospital may mean you need a convenient location to make treatment manageable.

Evaluate each surgeon’s communication style. Are you comfortable talking to them about what can be very personal topics? Do they welcome your questions and answer them in ways you understand? Do they show an interest in getting to know

you? Are they receptive to your treatment preferences? Do they include your input in decisions related to your care?

Peruse some patient satisfaction surveys. Patient satisfaction surveys typically ask people about their experience with scheduling appointments, wait times, office environment, and office staff friendliness. Reading what other people have to say about a doctor can provide insight into how they practice medicine, as well as how their medical practice is operated. You can learn about how well patients trust them, how much time they spend with their patients, and how well they answer questions.

Find out what your insurance covers. To receive the most insurance benefits and pay the least out-of-pocket, you may need to choose a general surgeon who participates in your plan. But you should still consider credentials, experience, outcomes, and hospital quality as you select a general surgeon from that plan.

A FINANCIAL ADVISOR

“When looking for the right financial advisor, you want someone who can help you identify any blind spots or opportunities you may not be aware of. The goal is building a thorough, comprehensive, personalized plan that’s best for your unique situation and that will further protect your financial future.”

Russ Ross ROSS WEALTH GROUP

HAVE YOU SEEN THE COMMERCIALS WHERE A COUPLE SITS DOWN WITH SOMEONE THEY BELIEVE IS A FINANCIAL ADVISOR ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT HE OR SHE IS IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FIELD? THESE HUMOROUS YET SHOCKING ADS MAKE A POINT: THE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY CAN BE CONFUSING AND OFTEN CHALLENGING TO NAVIGATE.

While it’s common to focus on how well your fi nancial plan performs compared to the broader market, there’s more to it than portfolio performance alone. A knowledgeable, trustworthy financial advisor who exhibits honesty, integrity, and a dedication to your best interests is a signifi cant asset.

Determine what you are seeking in a financial advisor before you embark on your selection process and start interviewing candidates. Are you more of a DIYer who wants someone to bounce ideas off of occasionally and then sell you products? You may be interested in a financial advisor who is more transaction oriented. They will obtain your information, recommend products, possibly put together a plan, and “sell” investments.

Do you prefer to develop a close, lasting relationship with an advisor? Are you interested in someone who will shepherd you through market shifts and help you make financial decisions that involve life events — divorce, death, illness and

disability, retirement, and more? Then you want a fi nancial advisor who focuses on building relationships with his or her clients. To help you determine what kind of fi nancial advisor you are interviewing, simply ask this question: Is your style transaction-oriented, or do you counsel individual clients, understand their needs and concerns, and build customized fi nancial plans? Regardless of how they answer the question, ask them to provide examples, and let them know what kind of advisor you’re looking for and why.

Be aware that financial advisors are either fee-based, commission-based, or a combination. There are merits to each of these approaches. Ask an advisor why they chose a particular approach and why it will help you best meet your fi nancial goals. This type of questioning can also apply to advisors who work for a company versus those who are independent. Keep an open mind, gather information, and learn. In doing so, you can make an informed decision.

Credentials matter. Look closely at a potential advisor’s bio, including their experience, licenses, and certifi cations, such as CFP (certifi ed fi nancial planner). If you want someone to manage your money, look for a registered investment advisor (RIA). Be aware that CFPs can cross over and manage money as well as provide planning if properly licensed, for instance, through FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). Other industry licenses and certifications exist, so when you fi nd an advisor with an alphabet of designations behind their name, ask what they mean and why they should be important to you as a fi nancial services consumer.

Interviewing advisors and asking questions is critical to your decision-making process, but the feeling that you can work well with a fi nancial advisor is also vital. Trust your instincts. If you don’t “click” with a fi nancial advisor, keep on looking and take your time. Your fi nancial well-being is worth it.

A PODIATRIST

“Our feet can directly affect our overall health and lead to serious problems. If you are experiencing foot and ankle, contact a podiatrist who is dedicated to treating the root cause of your problemsnot just the symptoms.”

Dharmesh Bhakta, DPM, FACFAS ACCENT PODIATRY

“THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING, AND THAT’S JUST WHAT THEY’LL DO,” UNLESS THE FEET INSIDE ARE SUFFERING — THEN THE BOOTS EITHER STAY IN THE CLOSET OR MOVE SLOWLY IN SHORT STRIDES.

Painful, uncomfortable, irritated feet are problematic and require immediate attention. In some cases, minor foot pain can be addressed by a primary care physician. Other times, a foot specialist, known as a podiatrist, is required. While selecting a podiatrist may initially seem straightforward, many specialties and sub-specialties exist. In most cases, your primary care physician will assess your need and steer you in the right direction, but it doesn’t hurt to be well-informed during the process.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, “Feet are complex anatomical structures, all-in-one stabilizers, shock absorbers, and propulsion engines that are instrumental to overall health and well-being.” Since feet require the care of specialists specifically trained to treat them, you should make sure you look for a highly qualified Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). DPMs have completed years of study and foot and ankle training through podiatric medical

school and training via residency. In choosing a podiatrist, understand there are those who focus on sports injuries, age-related degeneration, conditions affected by diabetes, work injuries, and others. Is your issue something minor in need of a short-term solution, or will your situation require repeat visits or perhaps even physical therapy?

Foot and ankle problems can stem from a variety of root causes, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and vein disease. Make sure to understand what’s happening with your feet and ankles and find a specialist who understands the cause and doesn’t just treat the symptom. Other issues include arthritis, injuries, skin disorders, nerve damage, muscle and tendon issues, toe or toenail problems, and joint conditions. Ask questions and do your best to get a complete picture of your affl iction. Don’t hesitate to do your own research.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options for a podiatrist that fits your needs, look

at online reviews and check the American Podiatric Medical Association website (APMA.org) for more information. Your feet need to last a lifetime, so preventative care is important as well. Choose properly fi tting shoes and avoid those that don’t offer stability and comfort. If pedicures are among your must-haves, select a place that is known for its cleanliness, one that uses disposable liners in the foot wash. If you have children, be aware their feet can grow a half size in just a few short months, so frequently check their shoe fit.

Don’t wear closed-toe, tight-fitting shoes without socks, and make sure to keep shoes clean and adequately aired out.

Your feet are your foundation, and while it may be easy to overlook them, make it a priority to include routine care and maintenance before they demand it. And if you fi nd yourself in need of a podiatrist, many excellent resources are available to help in your selection. Use the tips above to get started, and you’ll be on your way to successful treatment.

A BARIATRIC SURGEON

“Once you’ve decided bariatric surgery is the next step in our weight loss journey, finding the right bariatric surgeon is essential in helping you reach your goal. As with any surgery, you want a professional with a record of good outcomes and positive patient experiences. Look for a surgeon who listens to you and takes time to understand your goals.”

Jeremy Parcells, MD

ASSOCIATES OF MANSFIELD

NEW CDC POPULATION DATA FROM 2023 SHOW THAT IN 23 STATES MORE THAN ONE IN THREE ADULTS (35%) HAS OBESITY. BEFORE 2013, NO STATE HAD AN ADULT OBESITY PREVALENCE AT OR ABOVE 35%. CURRENTLY, AT LEAST ONE IN FIVE ADULTS (20%) IN EACH U.S. STATE IS LIVING WITH OBESITY.

Obesity puts people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and certain types of cancer, among other things. As the obesity rate has increased, so has the multi-billion-dollar diet industry, yet millions of Americans struggle to lose weight and keep it off. Fortunately, bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, offers another option.

If you’ve tried dieting time and again without reaching or maintaining your goal, don’t give up. Instead, fi nd out if weight loss surgery may be right for you. Start by researching weight loss surgery programs in your area. Check out websites and social media groups. Attend free informational seminars in person (often led by a weight loss surgeon) where you can listen, ask questions, and gather detailed information on a specifi c program.

Since there are several types of weight loss surgery options, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band surgery, gastric bypass surgery, and duodenal switch,

consider bariatric surgeons who offer more than one procedure. Once you meet with a surgeon, they can help you select the surgery that best fits your weight loss goals versus trying to force a solution that may not be optimal for you. Easy-to-use online tools may help you learn more about each procedure while also assisting you in gathering information about local weight loss surgeons.

Other things to consider when selecting a potential surgeon include their experience and credentials. These days, bariatric surgeons are often fellowship-trained, although many excellent surgeons with a proven track record and extensive experience began their practice before these fellowships were generally available. Also, evaluate their staff because you will likely interface more with the team than with the surgeon for ongoing support, questions, and general follow-up. Facility accreditation further helps ensure the quality of care. The Metabolic Bariatric Surgery and Quality Improvement

Program (MBSAQIP), the gold standard in accreditation, recognizes facilities that implement defi ned standards of care, document their outcomes, and participate in regular rigorous reviews to evaluate their bariatric surgical programs.

Finally, don’t overlook the ancillary and follow-up services provided by the program a bariatric surgeon is associated with. Weight loss surgery is only a tool — one piece of an intricate puzzle. During your weight loss journey, you will likely benefit from emotional support and encouragement, exercise and healthful living guidance, nutrition information, and making the right food choices. A comprehensive surgical weight loss program will offer these things and possibly more.

Ultimately, your success depends on your commitment to making permanent lifestyle changes that support weight loss and maintenance. Choosing a surgeon and program that’s a good fit for you will help you achieve this, and your weight loss goals.

A team approach to weight loss

Andrew Standerwick, MD

A UROLOGIST

A UROLOGIST IS A PHYSICIAN WHO SPECIALIZES IN TREATING, BOTH MEDICALLY AND SURGICALLY, PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE URINARY TRACT, INCLUDING THE BLADDER, KIDNEYS, AND URETHRA.

Urologists treat men and women for urinary diseases, and they treat men for infertility and sexual dysfunction. Kidney stones, prostate cancer, and stress urinary incontinence are also among the diseases and disorders that urologists often treat. Some urologists specialize further in the fields of infertility and sexual dysfunction, a subspecialty that includes the use of prosthetics and implants. If you’re dealing with any of these situations, a urologist is probably the specialist you need to see.

If you’re looking for a urologist, chances are that your primary care physician has recommended that you see one. A urologist will guide you through many decisions related to protecting your urinary tract health or treating a urinary tract disease, disorder, or condition. We offer some considerations to keep in mind to assist you in your search.

Begin by seeking referrals, fi rst from your primary care physician. You can also ask family, friends, and work colleagues for their recommendations.

Take the time to research the doctor’s credentials and experience online,

including medical school, training hospital, and board certifi cation. Once you have narrowed your list, schedule an appointment with the urologist who appears best qualifi ed to help you.

In the office, don’t be afraid to ask questions. For example, if you know you’re going to need a specific procedure, ask the urologist how many of these they have performed and fi nd out about the risk of complications. Experienced urologists are best able to prevent surgical complications or recognize and treat them if they occur.

Gender is another consideration, both theirs and yours. It’s important to feel comfortable with your urologist, as you will need to discuss some very personal information. Urologists may specialize in male and female-related urologic conditions. Your questions should include their recent training and experience specifi cally related to your situation.

As you ask questions, note their communication style. When you first meet, ask questions, and see how they respond. Do they welcome your questions and answer in ways you can understand?

Find a urologist who shows an interest in getting to know you and will consider your treatment preferences and respect your decisions.

Suppose your condition requires surgery outside the urologist’s offi ce, research hospital quality. Your doctor’s hospital will now be your hospital and hospital quality matters. Patients at top-rated hospitals have fewer complications and better survival rates. Also, consider how convenient the hospital is to you, especially if you will have to return for frequent treatment or tests.

Review patient surveys online, but don’t be unduly influenced by one or two disgruntled patients. Used judiciously, you can learn a lot from these, especially things like wait time, office environment, and friendliness.

Finally, don’t overlook insurance. To minimize your out-of-pocket expenses, you want a urologist who participates in your plan, keeping in mind their credentials and experience and the quality of the hospital care you may need.

AN INSURANCE AGENT

SELECTING AN INSURANCE AGENT MAY SEEM LIKE A MUNDANE TASK. BUT IT’S MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER OF LIFE’S ADMINISTRATIVE CHORES. INSURANCE AGENTS ARE EASY TO FIND, AND MOST OF THEM CAN GET THE JOB DONE, BUT IF YOU END UP WITH THE WRONG ONE, THE RESULTS CAN BE STRESSFUL AND FRUSTRATING.

Choosing the right person to lead you through the maze of options makes all the difference when life throws a wrench your way. Good coverage can mean the difference between picking up where you left off and starting from scratch. But there’s no need to worry if you’ve got the right agent on your side. Here’s a bit of friendly advice.

First, you need to identify what type of insurance you need.

Are you seeking personal or commercial insurance? Home, auto, other vehicles, or all of the above? Each agent specializes in different products. Some may lack experience in the type of insurance you need. Agents should expect you to ask about their credentials, qualifications, certifi cations, and experience.

Take the initiative and ask the kind of probing questions you might ask if a

catastrophe had just occurred, and you were trying to find out what was and wasn’t covered by your insurance policy. It’s better to fi nd out now, while you have the power to make decisions, than after the fact. After all, it’s your family, your money, and your property at stake.

What are some wise questions to ask when choosing an insurance agent? Try these: What are your areas of expertise? What is your reach? Are you local? Statewide? Nationwide? What is your experience in my industry? How many years have you been writing this type of insurance? Do you have any client references? How long have you been in business? How many companies do you represent? Which ones?

Trust your gut. Make sure you like the agent you’ll be working with as you may be spending a lot of time meeting or speaking on the phone with them.

There are a few simple things you can do to check the background of an agent or agency. The simplest thing you can do is to look them up on Google. Search for the name of the person, the agency, and any customer reviews you can fi nd. See what their website looks like. Every aspect of their online presence should be professional looking.

Eventually, you’ll have to choose. Be a tough customer. Once you fi nd a likely candidate, ask for a quote based on your unique situation and needs. Ask how quickly they can get it for you. The agent should be willing to work with you to thoroughly explain every aspect of the coverage they offer. Expect courtesy and professionalism. If they don’t have time for you now, what makes you think they’ll have time for you later?

A VEIN SPECIALIST

“If you are experiencing leg pain, night cramps, restless legs, or skin changes on your legs, it’s very possible you could have a vein problem. Contact a vein specialist who can help get you back to a better quality of life.”

Thomas E. Eidson, DO ATLAS VEIN CARE

AN ESTIMATED 30 TO 60% OF ADULTS SUFFER FROM LEG SWELLING AND DISCOMFORT FROM VEIN DISEASE, ESPECIALLY VARICOSE VEINS, OR SPIDER VEINS. WHEN THESE APPEAR AS SWOLLEN, TWISTED CLUSTERS NEAR THE SURFACE OF THE SKIN, THEY ARE OFTEN THOUGHT OF AS A COSMETIC AFFLICTION. BUT THEY MAY BE FAR MORE THAN THAT.

Not only are they embarrassing and painful, but they may also signal serious health issues such as dangerous blood clots. Only a vascular specialist can properly diagnose the source of your symptoms and determine the treatment that will most effectively correct your problems.

Varicose and spider veins arise from venous disease, a complex condition that a highly trained and experienced vein specialist should treat. Choosing the right provider will ensure that your situation is properly diagnosed and treated, and we offer the following guidelines to help you fi nd the right specialist.

First, treating vein disease should be the physician’s area of specialty. Any doctor can offer vein treatment, but that doesn’t mean this treatment is their specialty. A vein specialist must be a physician, either a medical doctor (MD) or a doctor of osteopathy (DO). Both have a bachelor’s degree followed by four years of medical school and then a residency lasting four to seven years. Some specialists also secure fellowships that provide an extended period

of additional training in the treatment of vein disease.

Along with specialized training, board certification is also crucial. Board certification from a professional organization such as the American Board of Surgery indicates that the physician you choose is committed to the highest standards of care and ongoing education in the field. Much of this information can be found online, and physicians will usually have their professional certificates on display. And along with the physician’s qualifi cations, you might want to ask if they use registered vascular technicians (RVTs) to assist with treatment.

The physician’s equipment is another factor in your choice. The vein specialist you choose should have state-of-the-art equipment that diagnoses and treats a wide range of vascular conditions in the least invasive way possible. Ultrasound equipment is commonly used to diagnose vein conditions, and laser and radiofrequency technology are often the treatment options for either varicose or

spider veins. Both minimize discomfort and downtime. A variety of treatment options ensures that the specialist can tailor treatment to your specifi c needs. You might also seek out references and referrals. Comments and recommendations from past patients are readily available online, though be careful not to let the complaints of one dissatisfied patient influence your choice. Remember that no matter your fi eld, you’ll never satisfy everyone. You can also ask your primary care physician which vein specialist they would choose for treatment of their own vein conditions.

Don’t overlook insurance coverage. Your vein specialist can tell you if your treatment is considered medically necessary or cosmetic, and the physician’s staff should be willing to contact your insurer to ask if your procedure will be covered.

Finally, qualifi cations aren’t everything. You and your doctor should be a good match in personality, which helps signifi cantly with both effective communication and treatment.

A PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR

“Your pain doctor should take time to hear your story, evaluate you completely, review with you all the available imagery, explain your diagnosis in words you understand and answer any questions you may have. They should work with you to develop a multi-disciplinary treatment plan that is customized to you, to achieve your individual goals.”

WHAT’S YOUR FIRST THOUGHT WHEN YOU WAKE UP EACH DAY? FOR ONE IN THREE AMERICANS, THEIR FIRST-MORNING THOUGHT IS HOW MUCH PAIN THEY’RE IN AND HOW MUCH THEY’RE LIKELY TO ENDURE THAT DAY. IF THIS SOUNDS ALL TOO FAMILIAR, IT MAY BE DUE TO FIBROMYALGIA, ARTHRITIS, CANCER TREATMENTS, INJURY, OR ANY NUMBER OF OTHER CONDITIONS. FINDING THE RIGHT PAIN MANAGEMENT TEAM CAN BE A GAME CHANGER.

A pain management center or professional specializes in the diagnosis and management of chronic (ongoing) pain. Some practices specialize, focusing their efforts on specifi c diagnoses or pain of a particular region of the body. Others offer comprehensive pain management.

A great place to start your search is with your primary care physician. Ask them to recommend a pain management team or clinic. You may also ask family, friends, and other healthcare workers you trust. You want to fi nd someone who practices a multidisciplinary approach, not someone who considers pharmaceuticals the end-all-be-all, but who treats the entire person, not just their pain. You want someone who will spend time educating you, so you can take an active role in managing your own pain.

There are also websites that can recommend facilities and practitioners in your area, including the National Pain

Foundation at NationalPainFoundation. org, The American Academy of Pain Management at AAPainManage.org, and the American Board of Pain Medicine at ABPM.org. Once you have a list of potential providers, visit each one’s website. Read about their treatment philosophy and specific focus(es). What professionals are included on that team? This may be physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, psychologists, and others who collaborate with a pain management doctor and/or nurse to create a pain management plan specific to each patient.

Make consultation appointments at a few clinics you’re considering. What is the practice vibe? Is it a place where you wouldn’t mind spending some time? Do they treat you with respect and communicate in a way you understand? Does the practitioner take time to get to know you and ask about your medical history? Ask them how involved they want

you to be in your treatment. Will they work cooperatively with your spouse, caregiver, or family members? These healthcare professionals will become a part of your life and your family’s life.

Do they place emphasis on patient empowerment and education? Do they respect your opinions and ask for your input on your treatment plan? Do they advocate natural remedies or just pharmaceuticals? Consider the short-term and long-term effects of working with each type of medical approach and choose the one that makes you most comfortable. If pain has eroded your quality of life, it may well be time to partner with a pain management practice or professional. The one you ultimately choose can become an invaluable asset to you, your teacher, your advocate, and your cheerleader. Look for someone who respects you and shares your goal of regaining function and improving your quality of life.

A HOSPITAL

NOBODY WANTS TO END UP AT THE HOSPITAL, BUT THINGS HAPPEN AND MOST OF US WILL FIND OURSELVES IN ONE OF THOSE BEDS AT SOME POINT IN OUR LIVES AS THE RESULT OF EITHER A PLANNED OR UNPLANNED EVENT.

Whether your hospitalization is for something happy like having a baby, something scary like major surgery — or any number of things in between — it’s a good idea to do your research ahead of time and have your fi rst and second hospital choices ready long before you need them. As medicine has advanced to become more patient-oriented, so have hospitals—and many now offer patientcentric services that might surprise you.

There are a couple of practical things to consider as you begin your search. The first one is probably where your doctor holds privileges or affi liations. Most doctors will have privileges at two or three facilities. If you’re set on using a specifi c doctor, you’ll want to be admitted to one of their hospitals. Speak to your doctor and ask them why they chose each hospital and whether there’s one they recommend for your specifi c needs.

Of course, in an emergency, the ambulance staff will take you to the closest hospital.

But when you have time to plan, your doctor’s recommendation is a good place to begin your search. Next, make sure the hospital and services are covered on your insurance. Various websites allow you to search for hospitals by city, state, or other criteria, and compare them against each other and against state and federal averages, including hospital rankings, size, staff statistics, admissions and surgical procedures, specialties, Medicare, or Medicaid acceptance, and much more. Your insurance company’s website may also categorize hospitals based on cost and their participation in quality improvement and patient experience programs. You’ll want to look for information such as infection rates, surgery success rates, mortality rates, and information on how well hospitals adhere to recommended guidelines for certain procedures. How frequently does the hospital perform your specific procedure? What are its readmission rates and average lengths

of stay? You’ll want to know whether a given hospital meets the National Patient Safety Goals and the National Quality Improvement Goals (care of patients with specifi c conditions such as heart failure or pregnancy), not only when it comes to procedures and practices, but outcomes.

This should leave you with a manageable list. Now visit the hospitals’ websites to find out what services they offer and whether they have areas of specialization or any advanced technology that could sway your decision. If your stay will be extended, think about your family and friends, and whether it will be close enough for them to visit and advocate for your care. Ask folks you know about experiences they’ve had with the hospitals you’re considering. Inquire specifically about the nursing staff since you’ll likely see them more often than the doctor. Once you make your choice, you can rest easy knowing you’ll be receiving the best care in a top-notch facility you trust.

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T MISS YOUR YEARLY EXAMS

When life gets busy, annual exams often drop to the bottom of our to-do lists. However, these routine check-ups can be one of the most vital commitments you make to your long-term health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), screenings for conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, and some cancers are particularly effective when detected early. These exams allow healthcare providers to monitor changes in your health over time, helping to identify gradual shifts that might otherwise go unnoticed. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) emphasizes that early intervention for conditions such as osteoporosis, vision decline, and metabolic diseases can improve quality of life as you age.

For young adults, it can be tempting to skip annual exams if you’re feeling healthy. However, these appointments provide more than just medical evaluations. They’re an opportunity to discuss diet, exercise, stress management, and other lifestyle factors that can positively impact your future health.

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) advocates for annual visits as a chance to address any new or concerning symptoms, review immunizations, and

assess genetic predispositions. Personalized advice from a healthcare provider can help patients build actionable health plans and prevent problems before they escalate.

With each decade bringing unique health considerations, annual exams are particularly beneficial. Routine exams allow healthcare providers to monitor and address new risks associated with aging, from cardiovascular health in middle age to cognitive and bone health in later years. These exams are highly personalized, accounting for your history, lifestyle, and family health patterns, making them a valuable part of preventive care.

WHAT TO EXPECT BY AGE

These guidelines help address average risk. Consult with your provider if you have personal or family health concerns that might alter your screening schedule.

20s: Focus areas include reproductive health, mental health, and vaccinations. Blood pressure and cholesterol checks help establish baseline readings, and screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are recommended as needed.

30s: Reproductive health, mental health, blood pressure, and cholesterol continue to

be monitored. Immunizations are updated as necessary, and discussions around exercise, nutrition, and stress management are typically part of the annual visit.

40s: Exams begin to include cancer screenings, such as mammograms for women, and discussions about prostate health for men. The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk of colorectal cancer start regular screenings at age 45. Continued cholesterol, diabetes, and blood pressure screenings are recommended. Weight management, diet, and exercise are often emphasized.

50s: Screenings for heart health and regular colonoscopies become routine. Bone density exams may be suggested, especially for women. Lifestyle guidance around nutrition and physical activity continues, with added focus on bone health.

60s+: In later years, exams focus on cognitive health, osteoporosis, and monitoring for chronic diseases like arthritis and heart disease. Vaccinations for shingles and pneumonia may be recommended. Medication reviews are conducted more frequently to address evolving health needs, with increased screening for age-related conditions.

DISCOVER THE WORLD OF FACIAL FILLERS

Picture this: Smooth, plump skin, free of pesky lines and wrinkles. Sounds great, right? That’s where facial fillers come in. These little injections work wonders, giving your face a boost of volume and a dose of radiance — all without going under the knife.

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery estimates that more than a million people get facial fillers every year. They’re a safe and effective way to achieve your beauty goals, whether you want to turn back the clock, embrace your natural features, or boost your confidence.

Choosing the best facial filler is a bit like finding the perfect pair of shoes — it depends on your needs, preferences, and goals. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the world of facial fillers and find the one that’s right for you:

Consider your concerns. Are you bothered by wrinkles, volume loss, or asymmetry? Maybe you desire fuller lips, or you want to reshape your nose without undergoing surgery. Examine your face and pinpoint the specific areas you want to address. Identifying your concerns can help you choose the best facial filler.

Schedule a consultation with a qualified provider. Look for a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who specializes in facial aesthetics. During your consultation, discuss your goals, concerns, and expectations. Your provider will assess your facial anatomy and recommend the best filler.

Get familiar with your options. The world of facial fillers sounds like a mix of tongue twisters. With names like hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) fillers, it can feel confusing. Your provider can explain the differences between these fillers and help you choose the one that aligns with your goals.

Evaluate longevity. Different fillers last for varying lengths of time. For example, results with hyaluronic acid fillers typically last six months to a year, while results with PMMA fillers may last five years or more. Consider how long you want your results to last and choose a filler with a duration that meets your preferences. Review before-and-after photos. Ask your provider for pictures of clients who have undergone filler treatments similar to what you’re considering. This can give you a better idea of the results you can expect and help you visualize the potential outcomes.

Factor in cost. The cost of facial fillers varies depending on the type of filler used, the amount needed, and the provider’s expertise. Consider your budget and factor in the cost of initial treatment as well as potential maintenance sessions.

Discuss a treatment plan. Your plan may involve one or more types of facial fillers depending on your needs and desired outcome. Facial fillers aren’t permanent, which means their effects will diminish over time. To maintain your results, you may need occasional touch-up treatments or an ongoing skincare regimen. While every laugh line tells a story, it’s okay to edit those tales a bit. Facial fillers allow you to enhance your natural beauty while keeping you looking like yourself — just a fresher version.

NATURALLY NEW ME XICO

DISCOVER HIDDEN GEMS IN THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT

Embark on an unforgettable journey of adventure and exploration through New Mexico’s breathtaking landscapes and cultural tapestries this spring break. Enjoy sightseeing and outdoor activities that connect you with Mother Earth’s natural wonders, from the sparkling gypsum dunes of White Sands and ancient cliff dwellings of Bandelier to the depths of Carlsbad Caverns and New Mexico’s vast starlit skies.

CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK

Descending into Carlsbad Caverns, you’ll enter a subterranean world where nature has been at work for millennia, crafting an underground palace of limestone formations. The Big Room, a colossal chamber, showcases nature’s artistry with stalactites and stalagmites that challenge the imagination. Here, silence reigns, punctuated only by the drip of water, marking time in the cool, cavernous depths.

The caves were formed as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from underground waters mixed with oxygen from rainwater to form sulfuric acid that dissolved the limestone over millions of years.

SANTA ROSA BLUE HOLE

Attention SCUBA divers! Just under two hours east of Albuquerque, there’s a stunning 80-foot-depp natural artesian spring known for its crystal-clear, sapphire-blue waters that attract divers year-round. Maintaining a constant temperature of 62°F, the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa also offers serene desert surroundings that invite relaxation and exploration. Whether diving or enjoying the view, the Blue Hole is a captivating gem of the Southwest you don’t want to miss.

WHITE SANDS NATIONAL PARK

The landscape at White Sands transforms into an almost alien expanse of white gypsum dunes. The park protects around 41% of the world’s largest gypsum dune field. Here, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto another world, where the sun reflects off the sands, creating an illusion of a snowy desert. As the day ends, the dunes take on the hues of the sunset, offering a serene spectacle of nature’s ephemeral beauty.

CHACO CULTURE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

Immerse yourself in history at Chaco Canyon, once the cultural hub for the ancestral Puebloans dating between 850 and 1250 CE. The ruins, particularly structures like Pueblo Bonito, showcase the advanced architectural skills of a civilization that thrived centuries ago. If you’re camping, plan to stay here for the night, where the dark sky, unpolluted by city lights, reveals the heavens much like it did for the Chacoans, linking modern observers with ancient astronomers.

BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT

Bandelier presents a rugged terrain where the past is etched into the cliffs. Here, you can climb into cavates — small human-made caverns — and walk along trails that reveal petroglyphs and the remnants of ancient dwellings. It tells a story of continuous human habitation stretching back millennia, offering a tangible connection to those who once called these canyons home and paying tribute to a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.
