25 LOST

POUNDS IN 3 MONTHS!

I've tried so many diet plans that just didn't seem to fit what I was looking for, or just didn't work at all. I found myself feeling sick at the weight I was at, while I was trying to lose the weight. Hearing about Diet Solution Center from my daughter Michaela, and seeing her weight loss I decided to give it a try! Since starting Diet Solution Center I've lost a total of 25 pounds in just 13 weeks. I've never felt more comfortable than where I am at! Diet Solution Center has given me more confidence. A huge thank you to Dr. Knight and Michaela for all their help and encouragement! Without that I wouldn't have results and I have today! Thank you to all the staff at Diet Solutions Center.

“See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come; the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.” Song of Songs 2:11-13

SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER Jennifer Kelley GRAPHIC DESIGNERS Joseph Villegas Justin Womack CLIENT SERVICES MANAGERS Jenefer Grady Veronica Garza Lisa Austin

Is there any better analogy for the Christian life than springtime? In spring, the earth around us is new and different each day. As we walk with Christ, we know His mercies toward us are new every morning. (Lamentation 3:23) During the months of April and May, the earth that seemed to be asleep, for so many months, becomes full and productive again. In John 15, Jesus tells us, if we remain in him and His word remains in us, we will bear much “fruit”, too. Just as God renews the earth bringing new leaves to once bare trees, He has an even better plan for you and me. He gives us new life and new mercies every day. Let this spring be a reminder to live that abundant life Jesus promised (John 10:10) and leave the old dead parts of life behind. Remember what 2 Corinthians 5:17 promises, “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Happy Spring, y’all!

The Grand Prairie City Council just approved raising the homestead exemption from 10% to 12.5% effective or $5,000 (whichever is greater) in 2023. A homestead exemption lowers the value of your home, which reduces the amount of tax you pay. Increasing the homestead exemption saves you money.

For a home valued at $235,000, a 2.5 percent increase in the homestead exemption saves $40 on the property tax bill and reduces the city budget by about $850,000.

To reduce the city budget by the same amount in a property tax cut, would save $10 on your property tax bill. The homestead exemption is four times better. When you pay your city property taxes, don’t forget about all the services you receive. The city’s portion of property tax on a home valued at $235,000 home is $1,370 per year, or $3.75 a day. For less than lunch, you get:

Check your county appraisal district website to make sure you’re saving the most money possible with a homestead exemption. And, if you are age 65 or older on Jan. 1, be sure to file for the property tax senior freeze that keeps the amount you pay from ever increasing.

You don’t have to look very hard to find an uplifting story in Arlington, Texas. Here’s one I like. It was a beautiful, spring day as more than two dozen volunteers broke ground at the city’s new Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden, last month. The project is a joint effort between Arlington Water Utilities and Tarrant Regional Water District with the aim of restoring native prairie and wildflowers to almost three acres of land adjacent to the Lake Arlington Dam. The gated garden also includes five 400-square-foot demonstration gardens of native plants and an area for gardening classes, field trips, and community events.

A RLINGTON included groups from UT Arlington’s Freshman Leaders on Campus, the UTA chapter of National Society of Black Engineers, the Native Plant Society of Texas, Arlington Conservation Council, as well as students and faculty from the Green Oaks School’s Adult Learning and Arlington ISD’s Martin High School. Thank you all for investing in the future of Arlington. Be sure to visit the community calendar at Arlington.gov for a listing of fun, family activities scheduled around The American Dream City this month. Hope to meet you at some of them!

A huge thanks the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation for the $10,000 grant that made the garden possible. Volunteers working to get the garden started

WHOSE KINGDOM

are we building? BY MIKE MAZYCK

It was almost midnight as I lay in my bed that night praying. With tears in my eyes, I finally committed to God and myself to do something I had been procrastinating on for quite some time. I made a commitment to go on a mission trip. I wish I could say that I made that tearful commitment because I was burdened for the people I was going to serve, but that wouldn’t be the truth. T he t r ut h is t h at I made t hat commitment because I needed to get away! I wanted to escape. Far away! Far away from America. Far away from the life that I had created. I felt like I was losing my mind. I had been in a dark depression for over six months, and it seemed to be getting darker. You might wonder what was going on in my life that would cause me to sink

20

may 2022

into this dark place. That’s a fair question. But the answer isn’t what you would think. Everything in my life was perfect f rom the outside — literally everything. My marriage was great. My kids were healthy. We lived in a beautiful home in an upscale neighborhood. My rea l est ate brokerage was thriving. I had over 90 agents working for me, and we were coming off a year of selling over 1000 homes. I had made more money than I had ever dreamed I would make in one year. We had gone on more vacations than I could count on one hand in the last 12 months. And to top it all, I was under 10 percent body fat! What more could I ask for? But that was precisely the problem. I had come to this point where I realized that I had achieved all

the goals I had set out to accomplish in my life, and yet I was still empty. I was more than empty. I was exhausted. I was frustrated. I was angry. I felt like I had created a life that was suffocating me. I felt trapped. I felt like I had achieved the A merican Dream and was now being crushed under the weight of maintaining it. You may think I wasn’t a believer at that point. But that’s not the truth either. I had walked with God for 20 years. I even went to Bible college for two of them. That was the real problem. I knew that all I was ever truly seeking in my life was this supernatural life the scriptures speak of. I wanted the fruit! I wanted a peace that surpasses all understanding. True contentment. Is that too much to ask? Isn’t that what the book promises? I experienced none of these things. For the last twenty years, my joy, peace, and contentment were tied to the amount of money I had in the bank account, our next vacation, the amount of body fat I saw when I looked in the mirror, or whatever hobby I happened to be pursuing that week. But like the prodigal who ran out of options, I had now achieved all of those things only to realize I had no more peace, joy, or contentment than when I had first begun. I was broken and exhausted, and I couldn’t figure out where this life was that the scriptures seemed to promise. About six weeks later, I boarded a plane for Kenya. I was on my way to visit an orphanage that I had already been financially supporting for quite some time. The orphanage was founded about five years ago by Jeff and Stephanie Bys, who lived in Texas, not far from me.

They decided to uproot their entire family and move to Kenya to start it. Kenya suffers from extreme poverty, and as a result, it is filled with young children abandoned and living on the streets. What began with just one child being rescued has become an orphanage with over 100 children, a school from kindergarten through high school, and a thriving church impacting the entire local village. My time with the Bys family in Africa was refreshing and life-changing in many ways. I remember being there and thinking, “I feel like I can breathe again.” I would get up in the morning and watch over 100 young children who had been cast out and abandoned by their parents sing worship songs at chapel. During the day, Jeff and I would bring food to the surrounding villagers and visit members of the church. In the afternoons, once school got out, the younger children would play on the playground while the older ones and I played some pretty intense games of sand volleyball. The time at the orphanage went by way too fast. I didn’t want to leave, and even as I type this, I find myself eager to go back. Upon returning from Africa, I reflected on my time there and what I had observed — trying to figure out what God was saying to me. I reflected on the poverty and the sickness. And, of course, I reflected on all those orphaned children. But as horrible as those things were, something else was nagging at me. A question I couldn’t get out of my mind — a question that has been lurking in the shadows of my heart for nearly my entire life as a believer. As I

thought about what Jeff and Stephanie were doing in that Kenyan village, I had to face the question, Have I laid down my life? Have I taken up my cross and followed Him? I had no doubt Jeff and Stephanie had. They gave up ever y comfort America has to offer for Him. I couldn’t get His words out of my mind. If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Mathew 16:24-25) Jeff and Stephanie seemed to take those words literally. They were taking action! What does that even look like for a married father of two in America to lay down his life for Christ? I certainly know he hasn’t called everyone to the mission field. Throughout my Christian walk, I have always been inspired by men and women like Jeff and Stephanie, who have heard the gospel’s message, taken His words literally, and decided to alter their entire lives as a result. I have been inspired by men and women who have taken actions that others consider overboard, extreme, and radical. I know these men and women are few and far between. Surely, He hasn’t called everyone to live out their faith in extreme ways, or has He? Is it possible that what most consider radical Christianity is normal Christianity? Genuine Christianity! I remembered the verse, “Small is the gate, and narrow is the path that leads to life… and few there be that find it!” (Mathew 7:14) The questions just seemed to lead to more questions.

community | FRUIT OF THE VINE

What does it mean to believe? Is it even possible for one to profess that they believe such a radical message as the one found in that book but not take radical action? Whose kingdom was I building? Is it possible for the American Dream and Christianity to coexist? Could it be possible that I have spent the last 20 years giving Him just enough of my life and heart to ease my conscience while building my kingdom rather than His? I thought about those words in Revelation to the lukewarm. Is that me? Am I the lukewarm? Have I found myself trying to serve two masters? Am I trying to have this world and that one, being made miserable because I’ve committed to neither of them? A nd t hen I remembered t he most ter r if y ing verse of a ll, on ly a few sentences down from that whole “small gate-narrow road” statement where He said that many would stand before Him on that day, thinking they were believers, probably having gone to church every week and He would respond to them, “Away from me. I never knew you.” Is it possible that I have deceived myself about who I am? After all, the deceived never actually believe they are deceived. I was finally wrestling with some of the difficult words He spoke. This period of self-ex amination was the most challenging season of my entire spiritual life. Yes, I found myself convicted! But that’s the life of a believer — ongoing conviction — ongoing repentance. But I also found something else, beyond conviction, present within my heart. Something greater. I found something that, I believe, must be one of the true pieces of evidence of genuine salvation. I found envy! I was envious of Jeff and

22

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

|

may 2022

Stephanie. I was envious because I knew that at the end of their lives, they would stand before their master with their heads held high, with a clear conscience, because they would know that they fought the good fight. They would likely finish the race with nothing to their name. They would hobble in from the battlefield exhausted, wounded, and bloody, but they would know that they were faithful soldiers during their short time on this earth! They would know they laid down their lives at the altar of the one who gave His life for them. They would undoubtedly hear those words, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.” I was envious. That is what I wanted — to hear those words. To have something to present to Him on that day. And maybe for the first time in my Christian walk, I realized something that set me free. It wasn’t about what I was required to do for Him. It was about what I desired to do for Him. The desire of my heart was to lay down my life for Him. I knew I would never find peace, joy, and contentment until I had accomplished that desire — until I had answered the question properly. Isn’t that the love story we are all searching for? Two lovers who can look into each other’s eyes on that day, knowing they laid down their lives for each other? So, what is the point of all of this? What have I learned? I suppose there are two things. One, the time for self-examination is now. As Paul said to the Corinthians, “Examine yourselves, to see if you are in the faith.” I believe self-examination is one of the most difficult and most fruitful things we can do. We must wrestle with the difficult things He said. On that day, it will be too late for many. But for me, maybe the more

important thing I have learned is that there is no more miserable state for a Christian to be than in the middle, trying to hold onto two worlds, trying to serve two masters, trying to have this life, and that one. There is no true peace in that place. No true joy. No true contentment. Only those who are willing to die to themselves will taste the fruit of the vine. mikemazyck.com mikemazyck@verizon.net.

Skandii MedSpa is all about encouraging greater self-confidence through aesthetic treatments to improve their weight, appearance, skin tone, nutrition, and hydration, providing you with that all important self-care. Skandii MedSpa promotes non-surgical approaches to combat aging and achieve natural beauty and wellness through a “less is more” philosophy focusing on increased energy, beauty, and wellness. Their Clean Start Weight Loss Academy offers a physician-supervised, medically based approach to healthy weight loss with comprehensive support and proven success for men and women. And their aesthetic services offer you a gentle, conservative approach to looking and feeling your best.

“Taking care of your overall health and appearance is imperative to a happier, richer, and more fulfi lling life,” said Owner/Supervisor Dr. Toker said. “It’s no coincidence people who feel good about themselves also tend to look amazing and possess confidence. We operate under the principle that every individual has a natural beauty and dignity that shouldn’t be caked on, baked on, or faked on, by other people and most especially not by you. We want to partner with you, to celebrate that natural beauty that’s inside of you—at any age—and help you take amazing care of you.” With that in mind, Dr. Toker and her team get to know each client and design a personalized nutrition and skincare program to enhance their inherent beauty from the inside and out. “While we promote the use of natural methods for enhancing your beauty first and foremost, we also understand that some approaches require medical solutions,” Dr. Toker said. “We’ve carefully researched all available technology, techniques, and skin-care products and selected the best, most advanced, but at the same time most conservative options to offer our patients a nature look that never looks ‘done’.”

EMSELLA—SAY NO TO INCONTINENCE If you suffer with incontinence, Dr. Anna Toker wants you to know there’s help. Did you know: • Up to 23% of women take time off work because of their incontinence • Women with severe urinary incontinence pay $900 annually for routine incontinence care. • According to the NAFC, 54% of women with undiagnosed incontinence report loss of confidence. 45% reporting a loss of intimacy. • Between 25–50% of women with urinary incontinence experience sexual dysfunction. More than a third of women between 45 and 50 avoid athletic activities for fear of an incontinence episode. Skandii Med Spa offers FDA-approved, non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical Emsella chair for overactive bladders and incontinence. They even offer an Intimate makeover to improve incontinence and sexual dysfunction in men and women.

BEING THE GOOD How John Hill is Touching Lives and Disrupting an Industry Through The Good Contractors List BY A U D R E Y S E L L E R S | P H OTOS BY K E N N Y R I C H A R D P H O T O G R A P H Y

You may have heard the catchy jingle on the radio: “If the job’s not right, we’ll get it f ixed. Only at The Good Contractors List!” John Hill, founder and CEO of The Good Contractors List, founded the business with a simple mission in mind: to change the contracting industry for good. The Good Contractors List hand-selects only the best contractors to be included on the site. John started the business with a handful of contractors, and now the site features about 250 certif ied contractors. Each contractor goes through a rigorous vetting process that includes a face-to-face interview and a business and personal background check to receive an invitation to join. And every contractor on the list is backed with a third-party $10,000 guarantee — which, before The Good Contractors List came along, was unheard of in the contracting industry. Should any home-project issues escalate, The Good Contractors List will also come to your home for a free in-home inspection and act as a third party between you and your contractor. Although consumers rarely need to take this step, it’s an option to ensure both parties feel safe moving forward. “Our ‘honest guys in the middle’ approach ensures the consumer doesn’t f ind a contractor who is cheap and doesn’t carry insurance,” John says. “And on the opposite side, consumers won’t f ind the megacontractors who have so much overhead that they only want to upsell and charge the highest rates. The Good Contractors List is the best of the ‘honest guys in the middle,’ and we believe you will always f ind the highest quality work at fair and honest rates.” The best part? The Good Contractors List is absolutely

free to use. This means you get access to vetted contractors and a $10,000 guarantee that they’ll do the job right — and at no cost to you to use the list. It’s quick and easy to register at TheGoodContractorsList. com and f ind a contractor for your next project, whether you’re planning a major remodel, or you need help with plumbing, roof ing, landscape design, patios, decks, or air conditioning and heating. “We have a wonderful customer service staff that calls every homeowner who uses our list,” John says. “We make sure the contractor did what they were supposed to do.” Considering that only the best-of-the-best contractors become part of The Good Contractors List network, John is conf ident that homeowners will be pleased with the f inal outcome. “ We are so proud of our contractors. We can only change an industr y if we pick the rig ht people to be a part of our organization. We can’t guarantee that you will have the perfect experience ever y time because anything can happen in this world, but we promise that the f inal product will be quality and the contractor will be held accountable to deliver as promised,” John says. “If the contractor fails to do what they were contracted to do, we will pay up to $10,000 out of our own pockets to f ix the issue. We believe this is the true example of accountability and responsibility.”

THE HEART ATTACK THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING Disrupting the contracting industry came as a result of a major life disruption. In 2011, John suffered a catastrophic heart attack that damaged 40% of his

heart. Doctors put in a pacemaker and cautioned him that he would never do anything more strenuous than walking on a treadmill. “After my heart attack, I just listened to my heart. I didn’t have any kind of business experience, but I felt God was calling me to do this,” he says. “God gave me the courage to pursue this new venture.” Though the money in his bank account was dwindling and he had suffered a debilitating heart attack just months prior, John poured his energy into creating his website. He did what he calls “Gumpin’ it.” “Just like Forrest Gump just ran, I just kept going even when I didn’t know what I was doing building this company,” John says. From his heart attack and recovery to building and growing The Good Contractors List, John knows he has done it all through Christ. “My strength comes from the Lord,” he says. “Doctors have called me a medical anomaly. I know my life is a miracle.”

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE John didn’t set out to become an entrepreneur, and he didn’t start The Good Contractors List to earn a fortune. He simply wants to treat people fairly, do the right thing, and make a positive impact in the world. Others have noticed and commended him for his work. Fort Worth INC Magazine honored John with its Entrepreneur of Excellence award in 2018. John has also been invited to inspire others through various speaking engagements. In 2019, John felt called to help people connect through home churches. So, he started Central Storehouse, a nonprof it Christian organization. Through this organization, Christians can visit FindAHouseChurch.com to either turn their homes into places of worship and discipleship or f ind a house church close to them. The nonprof it’s mission is to connect the Body of Jesus Christ to fulf ill the Great Commission and give to those in need.

Ref lecting on The Good Contractors List and now the upand-coming Central Storehouse, John says he can’t imagine doing anything else. “My whole purpose is to make a difference in the world,” he says. “I am so grateful for what God has done for me. I want to keep growing and reaching

people — eventually around the whole nation.” The next time you need a contractor, make sure you’re working with the best. Visit TheGoodContractorsList.com to register for free, f ind a trusted contractor, and start your project.

Misty moved to Arlington, when she was 19, after trying out to be a Texas Rangers ball girl and served on the team for several seasons. “I loved Arlington immediately and had no doubt this is where I wanted to raise my family and spend the rest of my life,” she said.

BY M i m i G re e n w o o d K n i g h t | P H OTOS BY L a u re n M e d e a n

It hardly seems possible to Misty that it was 20 years ago she was blessed to come upon a small, startup magazine called Living Magazine, who’d only published their first few issues and were in search of an ad director. Growing up in a family business, she felt more than prepared to take on

20 YEARS OF SERVING, LEARNING, AND GROWING Living Magazine Publisher Misty Morgan Daniels remembers well her first days with the magazine. “I had three kids, a dog, and a two-bedroom condo, and I desperately needed a home office to work in,” she said, “A friend offered me an old door and two file cabinets. So, I balanced the door on top of the file cabinets to fashion a desk. Later, I found a dresser someone was throwing away and my first Living Magazine office was complete. I loved it so much! Even though it was nothing to look at, it was beautiful to me. Today, my office has glitz and glamour, chandeliers, and gold touches everywhere. Of course, I love working in a girly space but there’s something very special about my first office and a place in my heart that will always be beautiful. It reminds me of God’s word. “If we are faithful in little God will give us much. (Luke 16:10) He certainly has shown that to be true in my life.”

HOMETOWN GIRL Misty enjoyed an idyllic childhood growing up in Keller Texas, but her family roots run deep in Arlington. “My father launched a large western boot empire in the 70’s called Morgan Boots,” she said. “We had friends like Ronnie Millsap, Crazy Ray from the Dallas Cowboys, the Real Lone Ranger, and I remember people like Brooke Shields stopping into Morgan Boots to purchase western attire, when they were in Texas. My dad’s retail boot stores were scattered across North Texas and Oklahoma, and it was very much a family business, for over 30 years.”

She has been crucial in the growth of Living Magazine.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Misty truly believes in the difference Living Magazine can make through the articles they write. “We publish articles that help encourage and enhance our readers’ lives, articles that address health concerns, the next new medical procedure, decorating tips, yummy recipes, fashion trends, and travel getaways,” she said. “But my personal favorites are the spiritual encouragement we deliver in every issue. It brings joy to my heart knowing we can help someone who may need a timely touch from God. the challenge. “I was schooled by my father in marketing, including shooting TV commercials, recording radio spots, and working with print media,” she said, “I loved the idea of helping others with the challenge of marketing and building up their business.”

FACING CHALLENGES It wasn’t easy though meeting the demands of single motherhood and the busy schedule of the magazine. “I can remember my youngest child slipping me notes under my home office door at 7:00 PM to ask me questions, while I was still hard at work,” Misty said. “It took a perfectly timed sermon to help me realize I needed to put boundaries in place to be a good mom and a good business owner, too. I was passionate about Living Magazine, but the hours seemed endless. And at that time in my kids’ lives, being a single mom needed to

be my priority. It was only through God’s grace I was able to do both. I could write a book on single mom dos and don’ts (and all the mistakes I made) but God helped me and gave me peace, for my entire 16 single-mom years. Living Magazine gave me a career I’ve always been proud of, helped me support my kids, and enabled me to raise them on my own.”

CLOSING THOUGHTS “Owning a magazine isn’t for the faint at heart.” Misty said. “It hasn’t been a silver spoon, by any stretch. But just knowing we’ve helped countless business owners

A DYNAMIC TEAM As the magazine grew, Misty was blessed to have her daughter, Lindsay Clark, join her taking on the role of social media strategist and content manager. “Having Lindsay here, the last 14 years, has been amazing,” Misty said. “She’s passionate about her job and always has a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Lindsay finds true joy in serving others. She’s an amazing wife and mom of three girls and a truly beautiful woman—inside and out. Lindsay is my best friend in this world. There are no words to express what she means to me and how she’s helped with the growth and success of Living Magazine.” Kami Anderson came onboard, 12 years ago, as an account executive and loves working with Living Magazine clients to design and implement a marketing plan. “Kami really believes in our mission and our clients and community love her,” Misty said. “She’s a beautiful soul. Everyone who knows Kami can see her love for Christ. She’s selfless, gentle, and kind and has been a real Godsend for us.

grow their businesses, helped the community with their personal lives, or just encouraged and brightened someone’s day, means the world to me. I often ask God, ‘What more can I do?’ Am I fulfilling the calling you have on my life? But He always reminds me, ‘I’ve given you a magazine that reaches hundreds of thousands of people. Use this platform to reach them.’ At the end of the day, don’t we all want the same thing? To hear our Savior, say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant’. (Matthew 25:23). Thank you for taking this journey with us. The best is yet to come.”

NORA FRASIER, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE M e t hodi s t Mansfi e l d M edi cal C e nter BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

Nora Frasier, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, feels like she needs to pinch herself. After more than 40 years as an RN and 30 in nursing leadership, she’s landed her dream job at her dream hospital. As vice president of nursing/chief nursing officer at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, Nora came on board in time to complete the planning and celebrate the opening of the new 118-bed patient care tower. “Over the past three decades in nursing leadership, I’ve been enriched by experiences in institutions of varying sizes and types (nonprofit and for-profit, from 98 beds to 1,100 beds, both academic and community based),” she says. “I can’t think of a more important time to be a nurse, especially at Methodist Mansfield.” Nora’s excited to be part of a growing organization, one that has been voted a Best Place to Work 10 years in a row. “And it’s thrilling to join a hospital that has achieved the gold standard of Magnet® designation, where we can integrate best practices from other Magnet hospitals into our nursing model,” she says. Nora actually serves as an appraiser team leader for the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program, the most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. “My role with the program enables me to experience the cultures of many wonderful hospitals during on-site surveys,” she says. “I’m energized each time I walk into a hospital that clearly values excellence in nursing. Almost half of Magnet standards are focused on patient outcomes. That’s a positive change for hospitals.” “Mansfield is a special place to live and work,” Nora says. “We take our tagline, ‘We. Are.

Methodist Mansfield,’ seriously. The entire Methodist Mansfield family appreciates the trust and dependence the community places in us to care for their health and well-being. We expect nothing less than the best clinical outcomes for our patients, and that guides our efforts and energy.” Nora was instrumental in bringing Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing to Methodist Mansfield’s campus through a unique and innovative collaboration with the city of Mansfield, Methodist Health System, and the university and in leading the COVID-19 response at Methodist Mansfield. During the pandemic over the last two years, the hospital cared for more than 9,000 patients who presented with COVID-related illnesses. “The phenomenal team of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and support staff were so steadfast and dedicated in their mission to expand capacity, implement new protocols, and deliver safe, quality care to patients. Our community was truly blessed to have this top-notch team standing ready to care for them during tumultuous times,” says Nora. CONTACT 2700 E. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing. I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients." – Diane Blaising, AUD, ADA, ABA, FAAA

It should have been no surprise to Diane Blaising’s family when she found her calling helping others live a better life through improved hearing. Way back in elementary school, it was a young Diane who wowed her classmates with a science project demonstrating bone conduction hearing. “This was back when we had portable record players,” she said. “I took the record player to school and instead of using the needle on the record, I had a sewing needle stuck into a pencil eraser. We’d hold the wooden end of the pencil between our teeth and place the needle on the turning record and could hear the record through our teeth and bones in our skulls. It’s not coming through your ear canals. It’s bone conduction hearing.” The workings of the human auditory system haven’t ceased to amaze Diane. Now as a board-certified doctor of audiology, she’s discovered she likes the human side of audiology even more than the medical/ science side. “I love the patient contact and making a difference in the lives of my patients the most,” she said.

After more than 26 years serving as an audiologist, the last 13 with her own practice, Dr. Blaising sees herself as a source for total hearing care. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing,” she said. “I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients. For instance, we offer a free aural rehab class for anyone who wants to learn coping strategies for people with hearing loss and their families. Sometimes family members need a little education about how to communicate with the one with hearing difficulties.” Dr. Blaising says she has the best staff on the planet. “They join me in my mission to help our patients obtain a better quality of life by enhancing their ability to communicate with their families and friends, for deeper, more meaningful relationships,” she said. “We love helping working men and women be more successf ul in their careers. Sometimes people are bothered by ringing in their ears. That is called Tinnitus. We often can evaluate what is going on and offer treatments to help. We live in a time

when hearing aid technology is extremely sophisticated and we have the ability to treat any hearing loss successfully. Every patient is different. So we stay abreast of advancements in the programming software that allows us to correctly fit hearing instruments to each patient we see.” Dr. Diane Blaising began her career in audiology in 1992. She received her doctor of audiolog y degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences and her master’s degree in audiolog y from the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. She has years of experience working with hearing-impaired adults and children in otolaryngologists’ offices in Louisville and as a pediatric audiologist at the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Dr. Blaising is board certified in audiology by the American Board of Audiology and has twice been given the Ace Award for continuing education. She and her husband attend First Baptist Church in Dallas and Dr. Blaising is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association. Visit Find out more at CityviewHearing.com.

“I don’t want to be “good.” I want to be extraordinary! I seek to love radically, forgive graciously, give generously, and live life without regrets.” – Laurie Bianco

“Car pe diem!” “Oppor tunit y is not a leng thy v isitor!” “ Take the road less traveled!” These phrases encapsulate the very essence of who Laurie Bianco, Mayor of Dalworthington Gardens, truly is and how she lives her life. Laurie grew up in Nor th Carolina in a family who embraced the core values of America— faith, family, patriotism, and music. She knew from an early age that she wanted to teach school. T he pursuit of that dream landed her at Appalachian State University. After completing her BS in elementary education, she started her teaching career at LJ Bell Elementar y and was later named “Teacher of the Yea r.” Rea lizing t hat she had big ger drea ms, L aur ie went back to school to pursue her master’s degree. At the age of 42, Emily was born. She is now 15 and is the sparkle in Laurie’s eyes. After moving to DWG, Laurie joined the inaugural class of the Citizens Public Safety Academy. “My advice is to try to be self-aware. Do things to boost your self-esteem rather than allowing others to build you up or break you down. If you are passionate about what you do, it will show. Have fun, enjoy life, otherwise, what are you working for?” – Mandy Cotten, FNP-C

Even at a young age, Mandy Cotten knew she wanted to help people. “Growing up the daughter of a doctor and a pharmacist, I was always interested in medicine and helping people,” she said. “As a small child, I loved watching patients have their blood drawn in my dad’s office. (Of course, having my own drawn was a whole dif ferent stor y.) My dad is a pioneer in his field and has taught me to always continue learning new things daily. I learned the importance of work ethic at a young age from my stepdad. He told me, ‘Working builds character,” and gave me my first job at 15…I’ve been working ever since.” Mandy also grew up with a mom she says is “Superwoman in disguise”. Seeing the focus she placed on her family, Mandy knew she wanted to do the same. “She goes above and beyond for her family,” she said. “I hope I can be half the mother she’s been to me. I always knew I wanted a family but worried I wouldn’t have

time to be a mom, wife, and advance my education. Life has a funny way of coming together as I ended up simultaneously planning my wedding, picking out kid’s names, and completing my doctora l degree in Nursing.” Mandy decided she could live out her d re a m of helpi ng ot her s a s a nu r se practitioner. As she worked to make that dream come true, she also married the love of her life and had her first child. “Turns out, I had time to accomplish both my dreams, with the help of my family and my husband Casey,” she said. “I love being a nurse practitioner because there’s so much focus on patient education and involving the patient in their own plan of care. Sometimes medical care can be paternalistic, but I don’t think it has to be that way. Utilizing my knowledge and involving my patients in their own care helps me provide them with better support and allows me to guide them in their course to wellness. Optimal health

for me is very much a team effort, I can provide guidance and then the patient can take the reins and make their path.” Mandy specializes in hormone optimization and sexual wellness for men and women, thyroid management, IV nutrient therapy, and nutraceutical management, giving men and women their quality of life back through holistic health care while empower ing them to make sav v y wellness decisions for themselves and those they love. “I arrived to where I am in a roundabout way, but I wouldn’t change anything about it,” Mandy said. “My advice is to try to be self-aware. Do things to boost your self-esteem rather than allowing others to build you up or break you down. If you are passionate about what you do, it will show. Have fun, enjoy life, otherwise, what are you working for?” Mandy is proud to pay it for ward by providing treatment free of charge to a group of veterans struggling with PTSD.

"We have a proven curriculum that focuses on the emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being of each student,” Christie said. “This emphasis has created a safe, nurturing environment where students can grow in character while receiving excellent dance training." – Christie Garrett

As a young child, Christie Garrett dreamed of one day becoming a dancer. To her delight, her mother enrolled her in ballet, tap and jazz classes at the age of 8. On weekends her mother would take her to the Theatre in Houston Texas where she witnessed beautiful ballerinas and worldfamous artist perform on stage. A hugely impactful moment was when she saw The Alvin Ailey Dance Company perform the masterpiece “Revelations”. The skillful beauty and expressive dancers along with the amazing storytelling would inspire her for years to come. As a blossoming dancer, Christie studied with The Dyche Yzer School of Ballet, Margo Marshall School of Ballet in Houston, The Abilene Metropolitan Ballet, and the Civic Ballet of Abilene performing in the Nutcracker, Coppelia, The Wizard of Oz, and other productions. Her dedication landed her a scholarship with Joe Tremaine studying jazz, lyrical, and modern dance at the Moral Landis Dance Center in Los Angeles. She also trained under the direction of Doug Caldwell and Jackie Sleight at the Dupree Dance Center.

After a professional career that included numerous stage productions, musicals, industrials, and TV commercials, Christie and her husband founded Dance Academy of Mansfield. It began as a one-room dance studio in 1999. “I was the owner, artistic director, dance teacher, receptionist, bookkeeper and more,” she said. The academy flourished and now consists of three dance rooms with 10 highly trained teachers and staff members serving over 150 children each week. “Our staff is extremely committed and passionate about investing in the lives of children,” Christie said. “They are also strong in their faith and great role models for our students.” According to Christie, one of the Dance Academy’s best assets is Studio Director Amy Brothers. Amy, who joined Dance Academy of Mansfield in 2005, has been the studio director since 2014. She combines her years of dance experience with her background in early childhood education to help guide and lead the academy. Her gifts of administration, vision and planning have helped take the academy to another level.

“Over the years Amy and I have become very close friends and we make a great team,” Christie said. “We complement each other's talents and giftings in a way that has enabled Dance Academy of Mansfield to fulfi ll its mission and purpose.” What sets Dance Academy of Mansfield apart is the emphasis of nurturing all aspects of a student—mind, body, and spirit in a Christ-centered environment. “We have a proven curriculum that focuses on the emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing of each student,” Christie said. “This emphasis has created a safe, nurturing environment where students can grow in character while receiving excellent dance training.” Christie and her husband of 35 years' favorite pastime are spending time with their 3 grown sons and their families. They love being grandparents to 3 beautiful granddaughters. “I have treasured the opportunity to work closely with students, staff, and the community for the last 23 years and look forward to many more!"

"I’m blessed with amazing children and grandchildren. I work with wonderful, supportive people. And I have my biggest cheerleader, my husband by my side. I get to start each day on our back patio at the farm just counting my blessings. My cup runneth over." – Terri Bauer

Terri Bauer has a succinct mission statement that motivates everything she does. “I will strive each day to be grateful for all blessings bestowed me, both large and small,” she said. “I’ll always work to be the loving caring compassionate person I was created to be. To have reverence for life and live in harmony. To always work at letting go and letting God. To follow the spiritual path destined for me. To allow all these qualities to flow through me, as I go about my daily life. To give to others and help them fi nd the path they’re destined for. To remember always; Life is a journey–enjoy the journey. To be a good example to my children as they begin their own journey. And to give my true self to my life partner and soulmate—John.” Those who know and love Terri can attest she doesn’t stray far from those principles. Whether it’s as matriarch of her large and growing family or as she works shoulder to shoulder with her husband—and now their son—in the family dental practice, Terri is intentional about walking the walk and talking the talk of a Christian woman. “More than 40 years in business, the good, the bad, and the challenging have led me to believe, ‘things are not happening to you. They are happening for you.’ Never stop learning. Never stop thanking. Never stop serving.”

Terri was blessed with parents who taught her the value of hard work, to understand the value of a dollar, and to give to those in need. “They encouraged me to be a giver to the world, not a taker,” she said. “For more than 40 years, Mansfield Family Dentistry has been about building relationships. We treat people with respect, and we listen. We help our patients feel like family. Caring for others by building great relationships is a blessing. We want to make a difference through listening and hearing what the needs of our patients are and helping achieve their dental goals.” Terri is an ardent sponsor of youth cutting horse programs which she supports through scholarships and is passionate about leading others to the Lord. “I strive to be a compassionate caring leader,” she said. “To be impeccable with my word, to set an example through action, and to live my God-given values. I strive to empower those around me through knowledge and education and love, to be a good listener and walk through fi re for those who walk with me. I strive to preach the gospel at all times through the things I do and say and the woman I am.” “I’m blessed with amazing children and grandchildren,” Terri said. “I work with wonderful, supportive people. The Fami l y Law Fi rm of D o nna J. Smi edt BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

“Total honesty between my client and myself is the best way to get the desired results. The more information I have, the better I can present options to them.” – Donna J. Smiedt

Donna Smiedt was happy and successful in her solo family law practice. Then she welcomed a dynamic, young attorney to her team. Now, she wonders how she ever got along without Desaray Muma. “Desaray came to work for me, six years ago,” Donna said. “I began tasking her w ith research and br iefs, which she promptly and expertly returned to me, no questions asked. I started entrusting her with uncontested cases and the least challenging hearings, to gain experience. She performed fl awlessly.” As Desaray’s confidence level and knowledge of family law grew, Donna entrusted her with the more complex and high-conflict family law cases that are her specialty. Now, the two work shoulder-to-shoulder in all areas of family law including divorces, child custody battles, adoptions, child support, and Child Protective Services litigation. “As a younger attorney, I aspired to have the confi dence and tenacity I saw in Donna,” Desaray said. “She played a huge role in me becoming the attorney

I am today.” Desaray specializes in cases involving the collaborative law process. “This involves a series of meetings outside of court focused on settlement from the beginning of the case, allowing families to have a customized process and control over their case,” Desaray said. “Collaborative law gives families the right to make decisions for their children and sets parents up for future success in co-parenting.” For 30 plus years, Donna has guided her clients deftly through the legal aspects of family law but also the more personal ones, proffering advice on how best to navigate emotional minefields and easing transitions for everyone in the family, including children, who often struggle the most with the adjustments. “Total honesty between my client and myself is the best way to get the desired results,” she said. “The more information I have, the better I can present options to them.” Her efforts have been recognized by a Fort Worth Top Attorney award, as well

as being voted Family Law Attorney of the Year in Arlington multiple times. From a small, solo practice the f ir m has grown to include highly seasoned paralegals, legal assistants, an office manager, receptionist, and chief financial officer, to provide the best possible front and back of f ice ser v ice to clients as Arlington and Mansfield’s full-service family law fi rm. “I can’t thank Donna enough for taking me under her wing and placing me in position to gain invaluable experience in all areas of family law that will greatly benefit our clients,” Desaray said. “I’ve had the privilege to watch Desaray blossom into the brilliant, beautiful, young lawyer and businesswoman she is today—a proficient attorney, confident in her own skills,” Donna said. “She’s garnered the respect of jurists and opposing counsel alike. I feel confident of an excellent future for both of us in this endeavor we love.”

“My staff and I strive to go above and beyond to help each patient and provide them with the best care, best quality products and services, and best information we can.” – Kim Le, DDS, MS

Those who see Dr. Kim Le in her scrubs every day at work might be surprised to know what a girly girl she really is. “Since I wear scrubs throughout the entire week, I come off as a tomboy, but I’m actually very girly deep down,” she laughed. “I don’t get to explore my fashionista side as often as I’d like to, but I do get to express my love of art by creating beautiful smiles for my patients. My passion is changing my patients lives by changing their smile.” It’s a formula that’s seen her name in America’s Top Dentists (every year since 2006), Fort Worth Top Dentists in 2007, and a lifetime member of Who’s Who. “My staff and I strive to go above and beyond to help each patient and provide them with the best care, best quality products and services, and best information we can.” she said. Dr. Le and her team stay at the forefront of their field by attending continuing education courses throughout the year, over and above what’s required. Dr. Le likes to practice collaborative dentistry. “I always want to hear my patients’ ideas, opinions, and feelings,” she said. “This is their dental home and I want them to know and trust me and my staff. Patients tend to underestimate the importance of oral hygiene health, but more and more studies are showing connections between the health of the mouth and the health of the rest of the body. When bacteria is allowed to build up in your mouth, every time you swallow it enters the vital systems of your body where it can contribute to life-threatening conditions.

It’s important for us to stay ahead of any periodontal disease, so this never happens.” When your treatment calls for cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Le offers a wide range of procedures to help you achieve the smile of your dreams, including Invisalign, veneers to close gaps and repair chips, teeth whitening, and laser dentistry. Dr. Le is a specialist in prosthodontics with extensive training in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and rehabilitation of clinical situations including the placement of dental implants to regain the ability to eat and smile with confidence.

MEET DR. LE Dr. Le grew up in the city of Binh Duong, Vietnam. She moved to Mansfield in 1990 and made the Lone Star State her permanent home. She went on to graduate from Baylor College of Dentistry where she obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1998, completed her Prosthodontics residency at Baylor in 2001, and her Master of Science degree in Biology in 2006. Dr. Le just celebrated her 24th year of practicing dentistry. She has spent 20 of those 24 years in Mansfield. "Let’s build this house and change the way foster care beings for the children of our community!" – Lauren Schaefer

It’s no secret that there are issues with the foster care system in America. If you keep up with the news, you’ve no doubt heard about the foster care crisis across the nation. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that unfortunately includes the state’s foster care crisis. Knowing this, Meagan Haasbroek and Lauren Schaefer have spent nearly two years tirelessly working to bring Isaiah 117 House to Dallas County in an effort to change the way foster care begins. Isaiah 117 House, a non-profit organization, exists primarily to reduce trauma for children entering into the foster care system. Isaiah 117 House provides a safe, loving place where children can stay while they transition into the system. “Currently, when children are removed from their homes there is a lag time between removal and when they f ind placement,” said Meagan. “This lag time can be anywhere from a few hours to several days. Meaning that children in our community are sleeping on office building floors, in cheap motel rooms or in makeshift facilities while

they wait for a foster family. And we want to change that!” Lauren added, “These children are being taken away from the only home they have ever known and we want to make sure that they are seen for the person they are, and to remind them that they have done nothing wrong.” For the last two years, Lauren and Meagan have been raising awareness and garnering supporters. The process has now shifted to the fundraising stage. In order to open the Dallas County Isaiah 117 House, they must raise enough funds to purchase a house in full and cover the first year’s operating expenses. According to Lauren, “We do not receive any government funding. This home will be the product of our community coming together because they want to change the lives of these children.” Aside from monetary donations, there are several ways people can get involved. Countless volunteer opportunities exist ranging from grant writing to lemonade stand

fundraising. And once the home opens, the opportunities to get involved will be multiplied. “Our home will need everything your home needs, and then some!” Meagan is currently an educator in GPISD, but will soon transition to the Program Coordinator for Isaiah 117 House Dallas Co. She and her husband, Gerbrand, live in Grand Prairie and enjoy visiting his home country of South Africa. Lauren manages the heath of patients on Medicare and is a licensed foster parent. She is the proud mom of son, Tevyn, and has had the privilege of caring for 10 foster children since she began in 2016. Meagan and Lauren attend Calvary Church GP and are active in the children’s and local outreach ministries. “Let’s build this house and change the way foster care beings for the children of our community!” If you would like to learn more about Isaiah 117, make a donation, or get involved, contact us at dallastx@isaiah117house.com or visit https: //linktr.ee/Isaiah117houseDallasCoTX.

“Clients have repeatedly told us that since having us do their spaces, they feel calmer, happier, and more energized”. – Cathy and Danica

For most people, life can almost always be described as chaotic. Our schedules are packed with appointments, meetings, chauffeuring our children or a million other responsibilities that consume both our time and energy. Cathy and Danica Orr, a mother and daughter tandem from Arlington, know the feeling well. They have both experienced the “not enough hours in the day” lifestyle. The biggest secret they discovered to surviving that lifestyle and the chaos of a crowded schedule is organization. This discovery led to the creation of their business, The Uncluttered Life. The Uncluttered Life offers decluttering and organizing services to create an environment that maximizes your time, money and energy. What they offer goes far beyond straightening up a pantry or tidying a closet. Their goal is to not only provide relief, but also to instill knowledge that helps their clients develop life-long organizational skills. According to Cathy, “what people don’t understand is that your organizational system, or lack-there-of, is the foundation of your home and how it operates. People don’t realize how big of an impact your space has on you”. A study done

at UCLA found people with cluttered and unorganized lives had higher stress hormones and were more prone to feeling overwhelmed or exhausted. Through The Uncluttered Life, Cathy and Danica aim to break bad habits and help their clients remove burdens. “Clients have repeatedly told us that since having us do their spaces, they feel calmer, happier, and more energized”. Currently, The Uncluttered Life offers three main services: • I n -Ho me Organizing: The profess ional s d o th e h eavy l if ting of decuttering and o rg a n izing anyw here f rom one room to yo ur en ti re house. • Remo te Decl utter C oaching: Monthl y (vir tua l) meetings w ith “decl utter coaches ” to h elp you formul ate a game pl an to ta ck le the areas in your l ife caus ing yo u th e m os t dif f icul ty. Cathy, who is one of only 50 people worldwide classified as a Marie Kondo KonMari Method® Master Organizer, has been organizing people’s homes for over twenty years. She also specializes in organizing medical paperwork, having earned multiple graduate-level degrees in Patient Advocacy and Health Policy and Law. Danica graduated from UC Berkeley with an interdisciplinary major combining fine art, visual studies, media, communications, history, and sociology. According to Danica, her education and a passion for interior design “allow me to look at life from a visual perspective in my approach to organization”. She specializes in creating unique, functional spaces with a designer look. Cathy and Danica started The Uncluttered Life as an organizational company. Their passion, however, is in helping their clients find their focus in the present. EMILY WILLS C e nt u ry Pi l ates BY DREW ANDERSON

“I have taught professional athletes… who say they sweat more in one 55-minute Pilates session with me than they do in their actual sport”. – Emily Wills

Like most great ideas, Century Pilates was born out of necessity. Emily Wills noticed a flaw within the Pilates industry. Options were limited to the boutique studio that is often too expensive to be accessible or the larger franchise that did not offer a comprehensively equipped studio or the personal touches the Pilates method requires. Emily identified the need for a better Pilates studio that could bridge the gap between those two options, and Century Pilates was born. For Emily, one of the major steps in making Pilates more accessible is debunking the many misconceptions that surround the exercise, like the error in assuming it’s an expensive activity. Emily explains that what you receive is extensive in comparison to a traditional gym membership. You receive expertly trained instructors guiding you through tailored workouts ensuring proper technique and safe execution, in turn maximizing your effort and investment. To Emily, “it ultimately boils down to how much you valuable your physical body to serve you in life”. Century Pilates offers a

variety of options to get started that match any budget. Another misconception about Pilates is that it’s simply a form of stretching. According to Emily, that could not be further from the truth. Pilates is a strength training system that utilizes spring loaded apparatus designed to uniformly condition your entire body. Pilates is low impact, high intensity resistance training that will build lean muscle, burn fat, improve flexibility and endurance. Emily highlighted, “I have taught professional athletes…who say they sweat more in one 55-minute Pilates session with me than they do in their actual sport”. Century Pilates is a fully equipped classical Pilates studio with over 17 different types of specialized apparatus, that all work as a system to deliver the fullest and most authentic Pilates experience available, making it a rare gem among studios, globally. They specialize in private training and group class workouts. Being a member at Century Pilates means never having more than 7 attendees in group class, which after CONTACT 2500 NE Green Oaks Blvd, Suite 128 Arlington, Texas 76006 (817) 752-76006 | centurypilates.com

“I believe in living every day to its fullest. I love ‘slingshotting’ myself across the world, doing hard things when I get there, and learning about myself through adventurous situations." – Lisa Landry

Interior designer Lisa Landry thrives on taking challenging situations and achieving successful solutions for all involved. “It helps that I’m very competitive and don’t give up easily,” she said. A creative thinker who doesn’t get stressed under pressure, Lisa loves helping others grow and reach their fullest potential. Good thing she loves a challenge since she’s stretching her time and efforts between two successful businesses, Landry Designs and Above & Beyond Multifamily. L andr y Desig ns, the inter ior desig n fi rm Lisa began over two decades ago, specializes in residential and commercial interior design makeovers. Their team of 20 has been voted “Best Interior Designer” by Living Magazine readers nine years in a row. “We can’t thank the readers enough,” Lisa said. “We added multifamily to the mix ten years ago and have won many awards for that work. We’ve now decorated over 100 apartment communities across the country.” A few years ago, Lisa’s son, a prolific real estate investor, recommended that she

invest in real estate, seeing it as more stable than the stock market. Lisa dove headfirst into researching multifamily investing by listening to podcasts, reading books, and attending conferences across the country. The result was Above & Beyond Multifamily, an apartment community investment firm through which Lisa buys apartments with partners. The goal is to achieve fi nancial freedom and legacy wealth for herself and others while improving the lives of the residents who live in these communities. “We elevate the look and feel of these properties, quickly increasing their value,” Lisa said. “I’ve been fortunate to buy $27 million in assets with partners in the past couple of years, and we’re regularly adding properties to our portfolio. I’ve also started a monthly meetup group to share what I’m learning with others.” Growing up, Lisa didn’t have to look far for mentors. “My dad served in the Air Force, and we lived in England and Spain when I was a child,” she said. “That instilled in me a love of travel and adventure. Later, my dad became an entrepreneur with

many successful businesses, inspiring me to follow that path. And my mom was the funniest person I ever knew, taking any situation and making us all laugh. Her love of fun and humor is a big part of how I live my life, too.” “I believe in living every day to its fullest. I love ‘slingshotting’ myself across the world, doing hard things when I get there, and learning about myself through adventurous situations,” Lisa said. “I come from a family of real estate investors, realtors, remodelers, and designers, and we all enjoy improving people’s lives with visual and functional improvements to their surroundings. How things look and feel really can make a difference in people’s moods and happiness, and we enjoy playing a small part in that. I also believe our health is our most important asset, so I focus daily on fitness and healthy living.” An animal lover and vegan, Lisa supports animal sanctuaries and helped found Mo de r n Ve g a n , a g r oup t h at ho s t s f un outdoor event s for t he “ veg ” or “veg-curious” around the Metroplex.

A GUIDE TO MEDICAL MASSAGE BY M I MI GRE E N WOOD KN IGHT

Repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome Migraines or cluster, tension, or sinus headaches Strains, sprains, and whiplash Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder Low back or radiating pain Frozen shoulder Tendonitis Cancer-related fatigue Osteoarthritis of the knee Post-operative pain and scarring Alcohol withdrawal Sluggish immune system High blood pressure Fibromyalgia A licensed massage therapist can coordinate with your doctor to tailor the massage to your needs and target affected areas. Open communication is key. The more information you provide your therapist, the better able they’ll be to help you. Explain what your concerns are and what other treatment you’ve received. Inquire about how much experience a particular therapist has with your specific condition. If not much, consider looking for someone well-versed in your situation.

WHAT TO EXPECT Massage therapy is nothing new. In fact, it’s thought to date back as far as 3,000 BC in India. For thousands of years, massage has been used throughout the world to promote relaxation and cure illnesses. But in the US, it was often still considered a luxury or indulgence. Fortunately, over the past few decades, the American medical community has become increasingly aware of the benefits of therapeutic massage to alleviate and reduce the symptoms of any number of medical concerns. Medical massage, also known as therapeutic massage, administered by a licensed massage therapist, focuses on your body’s soft tissue — the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support your body’s healthy function. US healthcare providers are discovering the effectiveness of massage therapy and recommending it to their patients even, as clinical trials show how well injuries and diseases respond to targeted massage techniques. Your general practitioner, chiropractor, or physical therapist may have recommended medical massage to complement therapies they’re already using to treat an area of your body — and for a good reason.

Your medical massage therapist may create a mood with low lighting and calming music, similar to a spa. But rather than an all-over massage, expect them to spend most of your treatment session focusing on your area of concern (although they may also work on surrounding or supporting areas). The massage work may feel deeper than a spa massage, and you may experience more tissue tenderness afterward. Don’t be afraid to let your therapist know if the pressure is too deep or uncomfortable. Your therapist may also incorporate stretching into your session and, depending on their training and your needs, may use deep-tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger-point work, movement therapies, or passive-resistive stretching techniques. They may also do “spot work” in conjunction with your chiropractor or physical therapy treatment, where they come in and target an area for 15 or so minutes during your regular treatment. When used in conjunction with your other treatment, medical massage can help decrease pain and increase your range of motion, make it easier to move and function more normally, and help you heal faster from a variety of medical concerns.

Where to Get Help – Types of Mental Health Professionals

MATTERS OF

the mind

SIGNS OF MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS AND WHERE TO GET HELP BY D AV I D B U I C E

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), mental illness is a condition that affects a person’s thinking, feeling, behavior, or mood. As NAMI points out, if you have – or think you have – some type of mental illness, the first thing to know is that you are by no means alone. Research suggests mental distress usually does not come from one event or cause but multiple linking causes. These may include genetics, the environment, and lifestyle choices. A traumatic event, a stressful job, or unhappy home life can be contributing factors. It’s also possible that biochemical processes and circuits, as well as basic brain structure, may also play a role as well.

WARNING SIGNS OF MENTAL ILLNESS As the American Psychiatric Association (APA) indicates, serious mental illness does not usually come on “out of the blue.” Rather, family, friends, and associates may notice subtle changes in mood and behavior and a sense that “somethings not quite right” with a loved one or friend before mental illness reveals itself in some full-blown form. Common warning signs and symptoms according to the APA include: Sleep and appetite – Dramatic sleep or appetite changes or a decline in personal care Mood – Rapid or dramatic shifts in emotions or depressed feelings

Withdrawal – Recent social withdrawal and a loss of interest in things previously enjoyed Funct ion – A dramatic decline in f unctioning at work, school, or social activities Thinking – Problems with such things as concentration, logical thought, and speech that’s hard to explain Sensitivity – Heightened sensitivity to sights, sounds, smells, or touch, or avoidance of overly stimulating situations Apathy – Loss of initiative or desire to participate in any activity Feeling Disconnected – A feeling of being disconnected from oneself or one’s surroundings, a feeling of unreality Illogical thinking – Exaggerated or unusual beliefs about personal powers to understand meanings or inf luence events, or irrational thinking more typical of a child rather than an adult Nervousness – A strong nervous feeling, fear, or suspicion of others Unusual behavior –Odd or uncharacteristic behavior The APA points out that having one or two of these symptoms alone does not necessarily indicate mental illness. But if someone is experiencing several of these, and/or the symptoms are causing serious problems with their ability to work, study, or relate to others, they probably need the help of a mental health professional.

H I G H I M PA C T, L O W DOWNTIME AESTHETIC PROCEDURES BY A N N E T TE B R OOKS

Nonsurgical aesthetic services are accessible to nearly everyone these days, and their popularity continues to climb as technologies and results improve. Below are some of the most sought-after procedures that deliver noticeable results with little to no downtime when performed by a highly trained and experienced provider with the proper licenses and certifications.

POUT PERFECTION

laser therapy like Emerald Laser shrinks fat cells to reduce fat under the chin.

NONSURGICAL FACIAL REJUVENATION If you’ve tried dermal fillers with good results, you might want to consider a liquid facelift. This highly customizable treatment involves multiple filler injections in facial areas to reduce wrinkles and mild sagging, giving the face a smoother, lifted, more youthful appearance.

Injectable fillers, including Restylane Kysse and Silk, Revanesse Lips, and Juvéderm Ultra Plus, are the go-to method for lip plumping. But for those who want more subtly shaped lips, the lip flip is trending. The procedure involves injecting around four to six units of Botox into your upper lip at the center of the cupid’s bow to relax the muscles and turn your lip upward. The result is a better-defined cupid’s bow and a natural-looking lip shape. A lip flip may also help smooth vertical lip lines.

Ultherapy, a popular noninvasive treatment, uses microfocused ultrasound waves to lift the neck, chin, and brow and improve lines and wrinkles. Generating a thermal effect under the skin jump-starts collagen production to improve skin strength and elasticity.

CHIN-SLIMMING

LIGHT POWER

Are you tired of your double chin? Now you can choose from a few solutions that don’t require surgery. Kybella (deoxycholic acid) injections reduce fat in the facial region below the chin by destroying fat cells. Maximum results are typically seen after six months and are longlasting. CoolSculpting’s CoolMini device targets smaller areas like a double chin by freezing and destroying fat cells in the treated area. CoolSculpting may also tighten the skin, improving results. Radiofrequency (RF) emitting devices melt fat to eliminate or minimize a double chin. Low-level (cold)

Morpheus8, a minimally invasive RF microneedling treatment, reduces signs of aging and improves skin texture and tone. It delivers RF energy into dermal layers via micro-channels to remodel collagen and adipose tissue (fatty tissue). Laser skin resurfacing helps reduce wrinkles, age spots, and acne scars, tightens skin, balances tone, and boosts clarity. Results can be dramatic. Various types of lasers are used to rejuvenate the skin, including ablative and non-ablative, and there are several manufacturers and brands. Talk with your licensed provider about the differences and what laser treatment may be right for you. IPL (intense pulsed light), unlike a laser, uses broad-spectrum visible light to do everything from reducing unwanted hair growth and erasing age spots and sun damage to treating rosacea and broken capillaries.

moles SKIN CHECK: WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR, WHEN TO REMOVE BY M IM I GR E E NW O OD KNIGHT

Nadia Popovici was a pre-med student and a hockey fan. Recently, those two areas of her life came together in an astonishing way. While Nadia was attending a hockey match between her beloved Vancouver Canucks and the Seattle Kraken, she noticed an irregular-looking mole on the back of the neck of the Canucks’ assistant equipment manager, Brian “Red” Hamilton. Nadia waved him over and held her cell phone to the plexiglass that separates the fans from the game with a message telling Red to have the mole examined by a dermatologist. He did, only to discover it was a stage 2 malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Caught in its earliest stages, the cancer had only penetrated the first layer of skin, and the doctor easily removed it, but he told Red if he’d seen him in four or five years, it might have been too late. Red took to social media to find and thank Nadia. When he did, the Vancouver Canucks and the Seattle Kraken chipped in on a $10,000 scholarship to go toward Nadia’s medical school training. That story has a happy ending because Red followed through and had his mole assessed. How about you? Most of us have moles, but few of us have the trained eye to know whether they’re a potential problem or not. So, when is a mole just a mole? If you have several moles and they look pretty much the same, or you’ve had a mole since you were a kid, and it hasn’t changed, you probably have nothing to worry about. Still, it’s a great idea to have an all-over check-up with a dermatologist once a year. A routine skin check takes only

64

minutes. Between your yearly appointment, check yourself often for moles that may have changed in appearance, have just appeared, or don’t look like your other moles.

MELANOMA CHECKLIST How will you know if a mole is concerning? Dermatologists indicate a mole may warrant concern if: It’s asymmetric or lopsided It has ragged borders It has more than one color Its diameter is greater than the size of a pencil eraser (1/4 inch) It’s evolving — changing in size, shape, or color Check everywhere, including the bottoms of your feet, between your toes, the backs of your legs and arms, behind your ears, between your buttocks, and your back. When getting a haircut, ask your stylist to check your scalp. While most skin cancers occur in sun-exposed areas such as the face, back, arms, and legs, they can appear in other areas, too. Keep in mind they aren’t always bumpy but can be flat. So, don’t ignore funny-looking flat spots. If you have a mole that checks any of the above boxes, make an appointment with your dermatologist and have it checked out. As Nadia and Red can attest, skin cancer is highly treatable when caught in its early stages.

FENCED

in

O P T I O N S , N E W M AT E R I A L S , AND MAINTENANCE BY C H ERYL ALEXANDER

Fences have always been the best way to ensure privacy and deter unwanted visitors. Whether you’re making sure pets stay in the yard or keeping the neighborhood children out of your flowerbeds, there’s a fence for you. First, check with your local zoning office and homeowner’s association to take the correct preliminary steps. Once you’ve received approvals, the next step is selecting the right fence material. Hire a professional to install your new fence for the best results.

WOODEN FENCES Wooden fences are popular because they’re attractive, durable, versatile, and can be carved, painted, or stained to match any home or garden style. Cedar is stable, rarely warps, and doesn’t shrink. Southern pine is usually best if your yard has a combination of some sunlight and moist leaves. You’ll pay top dollar for a redwood or teak fence, but nothing compares to their softness and luster. Install wood fences in a concrete base or secure planks to treated wooden fence posts.

VINYL Vinyl fences are attractive, non-porous, and easy to clean. PVC is most often used because it’s durable and affordable. However, its synthetic appearance can stick out against natural backgrounds, and it can be more expensive than wood. Thickness counts for quality and will look best for the longest time (some with a lifetime guarantee).

CHAIN LINK While chain links don’t provide much privacy or beauty, they offer adequate security for pets and kids at a low cost, especially if you have a large rural yard. Installation is easy, offering even more savings. However, they add less value to your investment and are easier to damage than other options.

METAL Metal fences are costly upfront, with wrought iron typically more expensive than aluminum. However, the aesthetic appeal and durability can’t be beaten. Although they usually don’t provide much privacy, they offer security, especially around a pool. Options range from classic to contemporary to match any home style.

COMPOSITE Manufactured from wood fibers combined with plastic polymers, composite fencing is a wood looka-like without the susceptibility to insects and rot. There are a variety of colors and styles, contingent on engineering and application. Because they’re more durable and require little maintenance, they cost more, plus professional installation is required. Quality can vary, so buy from a reputable dealer.

MASONRY Masonry is stately and beautiful, but materials and installation can be costly, and they usually require structural footing poured below the frost line because they’re heavy. Many homeowners pair masonry with wrought iron or wood to enhance the design and lower costs. Block and poured concrete need steel reinforcement, and brick fences often feature a concrete or block inner fence with a brick veneer exterior.

Maintenanc e R equirement for Fenc e s Wood: Cedar, redwood, and teak naturally resist insects, decay, shrinking, and warping, yet may require occasional plank replacement. Seal any wood after installation and annually after that.

Chain Link: Requires minimal upkeep, yet it can corrode w here the mesh links meet. Upgrade to a vinyl-coated version for a nicer aesthetic and longer life.

Vinyl: Doesn’t need treatment or stain, is damage-proof and lasts five times longer than wood. Wash occasionally with a mild detergent and rinse.

Metal: This material can rust. Aluminum will last longer without rusting, but wrought iron and some steel fences require treatment with rust-inhibiting paint.

C o m p o s i t e : D o n o t n e e d to b e r e g u l ar l y repainted or stained but can warp, expand, or shrink in harsh weather. After professional ins tallation, i t require s onl y occasional spraying with plain water. Masonry: Mortar joints in stone and brick fences can work loose and require re-pointing to stabilize over time.

emories for

Mother’s Day celebrations and gifts she will treasure BY KIM BERLY BL A KER

T

he role of mothers in shaping their children’s lives is unsurpassed. Mothers teach us to love, be strong, be confident , persist , live life to its fullest , and be the best we can be.

Mother ’s Day is just around the corner. So, this year give her a gift from your heart and your undivided time to make it a special day she will treasure.

MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH – Serve your mom a tasty breakfast or take

her out for Mother ’s Day brunch. If you prepare it yourself, the following menu will be sure to please — waffles or pancakes with her favorite toppings, fruit salad, omelets, eggs benedict , homemade hash browns, and for moms with a sweet tooth, coffee cake, or Danishes. Also, don’ t forget the fresh-cut flowers for the table centerpiece.

SPRING BLOOMS - What better way to spend a spring day than together in

your mother ’s garden? Pick up her favorite annuals and perennials. Then enjoy a relaxing day together, planting and sprucing up her flower garden and catching up on old times.

THE MAIN EVENT – Surprise your mother with tickets to an event she wants to see. Maybe it is a ballet , concert , play or musical, the opera, a favorite sporting event , a comedy show, or dinner theater. Tell her you to have something special planned (but not what), so she’ll be all yours for the day.

FAMILY PORTRAIT – If your family is like most , you’re well overdue for an

updated family portrait . What better time to have it done than on Mother ’s Day? Schedule to have your family ’s picture taken at a studio or hire a photographer for a photoshoot in the park . Coordinate with family members in advance on the formality and color scheme so outfits don’ t clash. Inform your mother how to dress for her special day but keep the specific reason a surprise.

THE POWER OF POETRY – You don’ t need to be a poet to write a special verse for your mother. In your poem, share what it was like growing up with her, how she influenced your life, or just tell her what she means to you. Print it on stationery, then matte and frame it . A LITTLE PAMPERING – Mothers spend many years pampering their

children giving bubble baths, washing hair, and caring for them when they ’re ill. Give your mother a special treat , a gift certificate for pampering at the spa where she can enjoy a massage, manicure, pedicure, or a soothing facial.

WEEKEND GETAWAY – Put together a weekend package designed

especially for your mom. Choose a city that offers excellent shopping, art museums, cultural centers, or even a quaint historic town with neat shops, cafes, and parks. Leave the dates for the getaway open so that she can make the trip at her convenience, or so the two of you can make plans together.

KEEP IT SIMPLE – Plan a relaxing day together, enjoying the outdoors.

Head to a nearby park where you can meander along nature trails reminiscing or take a scenic bike ride.

reakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but brunch is the most fun. The sweet and savory mid-morning meal is iconic for a reason — it combines delicious food with boozy drinks, and you don’t even have to wake up early for it! (Plus, post-brunch afternoon naps are the best!) Skip your next happy hour or dinner party with friends and host a brunch at your house instead. Follow these easy tips to turn your brunch into the social event of the summer!

3-4 weeks before Plan your party // Step one: decide what type of brunch you want to have. Will it be an intimate get-together with friends or a big backyard soiree? Will it be a family-friendly event or a strictly adults-only affair ? Once you’ve nailed down the basic theme, you can work on the specifics. Pick a color scheme, make a guest list, decide on a date, and mail or email invitations.

2 weeks before Create a menu // Food is (arguably) the most important part of brunch, so give yourself plenty of time to create the menu. Include a mix of sweet and savory breakfast and lunch items for your guests. You could get creative with colorful pancake charcuterie boards, complete with fruit, chocolate chips, whipped cream, butter, and syrup. Or, set up a buffet-style table with chicken and waffles, bacon, pastries, fruit, yogurt, egg casserole, tiny

sandwiches, and salad. The possibilities are endless! Next, decide on drinks. Mimosa bars are popular, which include several juice options and champagne bottles. Or mix a large pitcher of fruity sangria or Bloody Mary ’s. Don’t forget to offer coffee as well!

2 days before Decorate your table // The right centerpiece can set the mood for your brunch. For an early summer event, you’ll want to stick with bright colors, fresh flowers, and fruity candles. If your brunch is outside, skip the formal tablecloth and go with a fun table runner instead. You can also set out plastic champagne flutes and silverware. An indoor brunch can be more formal, with linen napkins, real glasses, and lit candles. Adding personalized place cards is another nice touch.

Party day! Be flexible and have fun // Pick up your pre-ordered food or start cooking in the morning, setting out fruit and drinks right before guests arrive. Finish putting up any last-minute decorations and balloons, turn on some laidback music, and open the door to your guests. Don’t worry about everything being perfect — a casual and comfortable atmosphere is part of the beauty of brunch! Enjoy your company and keep the drinks flowing, and your guests are guaranteed to have the time of their life.

MUST-HAVE ITEMS FOR YOUR BRUNCH Four recommended items to buy before your brunch: Eucalyptus Greenery Place Cards: Download these beautifully designed place cards from Etsy shop ViolaMirabilisDesign for just $4. After you purchase, you can edit the names on your computer, then print on thick cardstock. Cut and fold the cards, then arrange them on the table.

Champagne Balloons Party Decorations: Create a fun photo spot with these Champagne Balloons, just $15 from Amazon. This fun kit includes two champagne bottle foil balloons, 100 balloons in gold, clear, and white, and all the tools you need to assemble the arch.

Gold Champagne Flutes: If your brunch is outside or you don’t want to buy all-new glassware for your guests, these Gold Champagne Flutes from Target are the perfect solution. For just $4 for four, the gold sparkly plastic flutes give off an elegant vibe without breaking the budget.

Stacking Drink Dispenser: Serve two different fruity cocktails or non-alcoholic tea and lemonade in this beautiful Stacking Drink Dispenser, $130 from Crate & Barrel. This minimalist-style dispenser is clear, so you can see the pretty drinks and fruit inside, with separate nozzles for each drink. The entire thing is elevated on an artisan-crafted stand to add a touch of elegance to your table.

L I V E N U P YO U R B RU N C H WITH ONE OF THESE H E A RT Y R E C I P E S BY MELI SSA TAT E

NANCY’S BREAD PUDDING SERVINGS: 16 TO 20 | PREP TIME: 20 MIN. | BAKE TIME: 1 HR. | TOTAL TIME: 1 HR. 20 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: Bread Pudding: 1 loaf of brioche style bread, cubed (I used French bread) | 3 ½ cups milk | 6 eggs | 3 cups sugar | 2 Tbsp. vanilla | 2 Tbsp. cinnamon | 2 sticks butter, sliced Bourbon Sauce: 1 cup heavy cream | 2 cups sugar | 1 stick butter | ¼ cup bourbon DIRECTIONS: PREHEAT the oven to 350°. In a casserole dish, combine milk and cubed bread. This mixture should be very wet, and the amount of milk will vary slightly depending on what kind of bread you use. WHISK eggs, sugar, and vanilla together and pour over bread, soaking cubes. Top everything with sliced butter and cinnamon. BAKE at 325° for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove bread pudding from the oven and stir to incorporate all ingredients. RETURN to the oven and bake another 30 minutes. With about 10 minutes left of baking, start to prepare your bourbon sauce. COMBINE heavy cream, sugar, and butter in a saucepan. BRING to a boil, remove from heat, then add the bourbon and stir. Bread pudding is ready when the bread tips are golden brown, and the middle has minimal movement when the pan is moved from side to side. Once done, pour half of the bourbon sauce on top of the entire bread pudding. SERVE with a fruit compote (I used blueberry) of your choice spread onto a plate, then top with warm bread pudding, to finish pour on more bourbon sauce.
