VOICES John Button PRESIDENT kiwanis international

THE PARTY BEGINS January 21, 1915—the day the world changed. On that day, the State of Michigan granted the charter to the Detroit No. 1 Kiwanis Club, and the world changed forever. Troubles surfaced soon after the chartering as struggles developed between the first members over the club’s focus: improved business practices and profits or community service. Many arguments and fistfights later, those favoring community service prevailed. And the rest is history. We celebrate our 100-year history beginning with our float in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. Then, it’s on to Detroit for that club’s centennial celebration weekend, January 23–24. From there, the Centennial Tour begins as Debbie and I travel to 12 Kiwanis centers around the globe to celebrate with thousands of Kiwanians just like you. All of this will culminate in Indianapolis, Indiana, June 25–28 at our 100th Annual Kiwanis International Convention. We are going to paint the city in Kiwanis colors and have a Kiwanis party like never before. What better way to celebrate our centennial than to give a gift of our own to the world. And we will. We’ll deliver the end of maternalneonatal tetanus to the world. What a proud moment for every Kiwanian around the globe! I will be humbled and honored to present this gift. Let’s dig deeper and raise a few more dollars to put The Eliminate Project over the top. Let’s make history again! As we commemorate 100 years of Kiwanis fun, fellowship and service, we’re also ushering in our next century. We have every reason to celebrate our past 100 years of impact, but we also must remain focused on our future. That future depends on the success of The Formula. The success of The Formula depends on you. A formula is a prescription, and in the case of The Formula, it is a prescription for the future. It is so simple. Love Kiwanis. Love the fun, fellowship and service. Share Kiwanis. Share what you love about Kiwanis with others. Live Kiwanis. Make Kiwanis part of every day. And the loving of Kiwanis will follow. It’s a circle. When Kiwanians around the world complete the circle, the next century will be ours for the taking. Let’s party!

melvin V. mendoza DISTRICT GOVERNOR Philippine luzon district “ALL MEN SEEK ONE GOAL: SUCCESS AND HAPINESS. THE ONLY WAY TO ACHIEVE TRUE SUCCESS IS TO EXPRESS YOURSELF COMPLETELY IN SERVICE TO SOCIETY.” (Aristotle, 350 B.C.) To this day, after thousands of years, Aristotle’s words are still very relevant. And Kiwanis, on its 100th year, is proud to be a part of this advocacy as we Kiwanians continue to serve society, especially for the youth, with the satisfaction of helping others and building better communities without expecting anything in return. One hundred years ago, the first Kiwanis club was formally organized when the State of Michigan granted the charter of the Kiwanis Club of Detroit on January 21, 1915. From then on, Kiwanis has been on full throttle. Henry J. Elliott, the President of Kiwanis in 1919-1920, predicted that: “The future of Kiwanis lies fundamentally in the enthusiasm and activity of the individual member.” And he was right. We, the members of the Philippine Luzon District, like all other Kiwanians from different parts of the globe, have proven to ourselves that we are up to the challenge, that we are here to stay, that we are proud of Kiwanis as a global organization of volunteers, dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. And it was fifty years ago when the first Kiwanis club was organized in the Philippines. The Kiwanis Club of Manila is still very much alive, and so are many other clubs that were organized in the late 60’s and the early 70’s, or more than 40 years ago. By the way, the Kiwanis Club of Lake City is celebrating on January 18, 2015 its 41st Anniversary. International President John Button has appropriately chartered the course for Kiwanis in its centennial year with the theme: “The Way Ahead.” It gives us hope, it gives us a sense of direction, and a clear mission and vision for the next 100 years. I have said that in our hands lies the future of Kiwanis for the next 100 years, echoing the prediction of former president Elliott that the future of Kiwanis lies in the enthusiasm and activity of the individual member. Let me take this opportunity to remind you of the Back to Basics program that I envisioned to guide us through the years ahead. The program was anchored on four pillars: Service, Growth, Education and Fellowship. The Fifth Object of Kiwanis summarizes what Kiwanis is all about: forming enduring friendships, rendering altruistic service, and building better communities. We have been off to a good start and I am confident that with the continued support and cooperation, enthusiasm and activity of each member, we will flourish.

FIRST OF LEADERS

BUILDING HUMANITY by SERVING THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD “WE BUILD” Motto, Kiwanis International 1920 “SERVING THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD” Motto, Kiwanis International 2005

In observance of the 100th founding anniversary of Kiwanis International on January 21, 2015, the Philippine Luzon District of Kiwanis International headed by Gov. Melvin V. Mendoza is privileged and honored to lead a personal visit and casual interview on one of the pioneers of Kiwanis International Philippine District in the person of Dr. Homobono B. Callleja or HB for short. Below are the highlights of interviews held at his office at St. Lukes Medical Hospital and at his residence in Greenhills West, San Juan, Metro Manila. The fifth of 13 siblings, Dr. Homobono B. Calleja was born on February 27, 1929. Married to Ella Alma Maceda, they are blessed

with 5 children, all professionals now in their own right. HB finished medicine at the University of Sto. Tomas (Cum Laude) in 1954 and took his post graduate training at Cleveland Clinic Foundation , Cleveland, Ohio in 1956 -58. At Cleveland Clinic, he met Dr. William Johon Kolff, a Dutch migrant and appointed Head of Artificial Organs of said hospital. Dr. Kolff is internationally known as the “Father of Artificial Organs” for heart, kidney, placenta, lung and eyes. His wife was Indonesian and he became a good friend of the family. One day, Dr. John told HB that he is a Kiwanian and brought HB to a Kiwanis meeting. This became the rationale for HB joining

Kiwanis when he came back to the Philippines in 1960. As Governor of Kiwanis International in the Philippines in 1973-1974, he built 42 clubs from Laoag, Ilocos Norte to General Santos, Cotabato. When Philippine Kiwanis District covered the whole archipelago before its division to Luzon and South Districts in 1975, he was able to build clubs at such a fast pace by tapping his fellow doctors. He received Kiwanis International Award for the Leadership and New Club Building during the 1974 Kiwanis International Convention in Denver, Colorado from Kiwanis International President Dr. William M. Eagles, a neurosurgeon from Chesterfield, Virginia Kiwanis Club.

President Eagles also cited their Heart Foundation Patient Alfredo Junsay who had congenital heart disease undergone operation at the University of Chicago Medical Center with assistance from Kiwanis Club of Oakland, California and Kiwanis Club of Chicago. After his governorship, he was appointed Kiwanis International representative for the Far East for 1 year and built Kiwanis Clubs in Bangkok in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur and Malacca in Malaysia. HB’s involvement in the St. Luke’s Heart Institute started with the “Hole-in-the-Heart” project when he was President of KC Quezon City in 1968. Thereafter, he organized the Kiwanis Heart Foundation in 1970 together with other Kiwanians who were also heart specialists. His contributions were further recognized when he was invited to be part of the group that organized the Philippine Heart Center in 1975. All his efforts

culminated in the formation of the St. Luke’s Medical Center Heart Institute in 1986 and the Saint Luke’s Heart and Vascular Institute in 2014. From 1969 to 1972 the Hole in the Heart Project Foundation served 30 patients with 6 sent abroad for cardiac operation. Patients were referred by Kiwanis Club of Manila, Mayor Amelia Gordon of Olongapo City , Luis Taruc, Mayor Nemesio Yabut of Makati, Tahanan Foundation, Inc., Capitol Jaycees, and 3 patients from Mrs. Imelda Marcos. In 1972 the foundation started to search for the “Ten Patients” who survived longest after a heart attack. In 1968, HB invited noted heart specialist Dr. Christian Barnard, the first cardiac surgeon to successfully perform a heart transplant, to be a guest speaker in a Kiwanis event. Later, in 1972, Dr. HB was invited by Mrs. Imelda Marcos to accompany her to USA with 4 other Pilipino physicians to see the Heart Center in Cleveland

Clinic where he trained in 195658. The Philippine Heart Center for Asia the first in the ASEAN region was inaugurated on February 14, 1975. He was appointed Head, Department of Adult Cardiology and opened an educational program in cardiology for training young physicians to become cardiologist when he became President of Philippine Heart Association (PHA). Today HB is the Director Emeritus of Heart Institute, Saint Lukes Medical Center (SLMC), Vice-Chairman of the Board, College of Medicine (SLMC),Chairman Scholarship Committee,College of Medicine, SLMC, Chairman of the Board, Mary Mediatrix Medical Center, Lipa City and Professor of Medicine, William H. Quasha College of Medicine, SLMC. HB is an esteemed medical icon having served as president of the Philippine Heart Association in 1977-1978 and as president of the Philippine Medical Association in Ang Kiwanian

Bring Up Grades recognizes students who raise their grades to an acceptable range and maintain or continue to raise them from one grading period to the next. Recognition includes being placed on the school’s BUG Honor Roll, a food-themed party, and presentation of certificates, buttons and other giveaways.

START A PROGRAM BEGIN WITH THE BASICS Do you know of a school or community center that could benefit from a Bring Up Grades program? BUG is sponsored by a Kiwanis club in your area. A Key Club (high school students) or Circle K International club (university students) can also sponsor a program or serve as a co-sponsor along with a Kiwanis club. Kiwanis resources make starting a program simple and rewarding.

42

Ang Kiwanian

What you need to know! Program goals • Teach students how to establish and reach the academic goals. • Teach students about perseverance. • Encourage peer mentoring. • Provide teachers with a method to empower and motivate students to achieve academically. • To recognize all students in the participating classroom by the end of the school year. Planning that must happen before the program begins Schedule a meeting with the Kiwanis club volunteers, the principal and participating classroom teachers. Meeting Agenda • Determine the classrooms participating. • Determine when students will be recognized and how they will be recognized. o Party, luncheon celebration, program in the auditorium? • Determine if the Kiwanis club will be providing additional tutoring and mentoring. o If yes, establish a mentoring schedule for each classroom. • Determine when Kiwanis volunteers will educate students about the program Will the Kiwanis volunteer go from class to class? Will all participating classes meet in the auditorium to be educated? The subject selection/goal setting activity should take place in each classroom. Educating students This is the responsibility of Kiwanis club volunteers. Students and parents must understand how recognition is received. The Kiwanis club schedules a time to visit each classroom and give 2 presentations. • Presentation 1 - Explains Bring Up Grades. A letter and parent flier is given to each student to take home. • Presentation 2 - Explains how to select an academic goal. Goals are displayed at the front of the room and students are encouraged to help each other achieve goals. A great peer mentoring tool. Teacher involvement • Teachers track each student’s progress. Utilizing the school’s grading system.

• Teachers use goals displayed at the front of the room to help students focus on academic achievements. • Teachers provide names of students who have raised grades to the Kiwanis club. • If a student doesn’t reach his/her goal of raising a grade the teacher is asked to speak with the student and discuss why the goal wasn’t achieved. A new academic goal is established for the student to work toward during the next grading period. This is a lesson in perseverance. • If the Kiwanis club is scheduled to provide tutoring or mentoring, the teacher is asked to allow Kiwanis club volunteers to visit class. • The teacher is also asked to allow time for class members to attend the recognition event. Key points • The Kiwanis club must meet with the school principal and teacher to determine program implementation as a first step. • The Kiwanis club must take the lead in educating students about the program and in assisting students with establishing academic goals. • Kiwanis volunteers, teachers, students and parents must all understand how recognition is achieved. Otherwise students misunderstand how to receive recognition and hurt feelings result. • Students need to understand that if an academic goal isn’t reached, another opportunity to achieve success is available. Failure to reach a goal is an opportunity to teach a student about perseverance. • Every student in the classroom should be honored as a Bring Up Grades recipient before the end of the school year. High achieving students need to be included Students who maintain excellent grades should be honored as BUG recipients. The key is to be consistent about how recognition is received in order to motivate continued success. • High achieving students are recognized for maintaining excellent grades each grading period. • Students that help other students succeed are eligible to be honored as Super BUGs. Super BUG certificates are available online. Honoring students as Super BUGs is an excellent way to encourage peer mentoring.

The Eliminate Project Kiwanis’ current global campaign for children, The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal/ neonatal tetanus, aims to raise US$110 million and save the lives of a 129 million mothers and their future babies. In partnership with UNICEF, Kiwanis is committing by 2015 to eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus, a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. By targeting this disease, Kiwanis will not only save lives but also pave the way for other interventions that will boost maternal health and child survival among the poorest, most underserved women and children in the world. Announced at the 95th Annual Kiwanis International Convention in June 2010, this project will tap into Kiwanis’ global volunteer network and strength in reaching communities and leaders, along with UNICEF’s field staff, technical expertise and unbeatable supply chain to wipe out this cruel, centuries-old disease. During Kiwanis’ first global campaign for children, the Worldwide Service Project for IDD, members worked to virtually eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the

world’s leading preventable cause of mental retardation, while raising more than US$100 million. Heralded as one of the most successful health initiatives in the world, today those dollars are at work in more than 103 nations—and the number of households consuming iodized salt has jumped from from an estimated

20 percent in 1990 to more than 70 percent, saving developing nations and the world billions of IQ points.

IT STARTS WITH YOU

Maternal and neonatal tetanus is a cruel killer. It marks an infected baby’s short life with excruciating pain, preventing even the comfort of a mother’s touch. The Kiwanis family is partnering with UNICEF to eliminate this highly preventable disease. It’s anambitious goal, but it’s achievable—thanks especially to our strong global network of clubs. That network includes you and your club. You can protect precious lives. This guide will show you how. Ang Kiwanian

46

Ang Kiwanian

WHY WE DO IT We chose to eliminate MNT from the face of the Earth because our partner, UNICEF, already has a proven action plan—and because the results are measurable and profound. We have the power to save or protect millions of lives and to be a part of a meaningful global commitment. In honor of this commitment, you’ll receive a Model Club certificate and be recognized at worldwide events. After fulfilling your pledge, you’ll receive a Model Club banner patch, a lapel pin for each member and organization-wide recognition. Model Clubs that exceed their fundraising goal can receive additional recognition. If you commit to raise more than the US$750 permember average over a five-year period, you may be named a 200 or 300 percent Model Club and receive a special banner patch. Together we can save or protect more than 416 lives with every US$750 we raise.

Our goal: to raise US $110 million by 2015

Read Around the World Every child should experience the joy of reading. Kiwanis members believe this, and have long been dedicated to Kiwanis’ Read Around the World program. But reading projects deserve more than a monthlong observance. That’s why Kiwanis International now urges the entire Kiwanis family to implement Read Around the World projects throughout the entire year. Kiwanis is proud to partner with Scholastic, an organization that supports children’s access to books and

48

lifelong love of reading. Thanks to our partnership, Kiwanis clubs get crucial resources for helping children in their communities get access to books and reading opportunities — regardless of socioeconomic status. Multiple resources exist to make your Read Around the World project meaningful.

Cares: Children go for Special Games by Elaine P. Flores KC Lungsod Quezon

Yes, children with disabilities can do what normal children can do. This inspired Kiwanis to design special program on different games suited for special children and it’s called Kiwanis Special Games. It aims to promote respect, acquaintance and equality among children who are physically and mentally handicapped. In joining the special games, it was observed that the special children boosted their hidden talents. In every game that they accomplished, smiles radiated on their faces. From these smiles, they gained self –confidence and they didn’t mind their incapacities as a hindrance to achieve their goals. Aside from having fun and a healthy body, a special child also is able to learn the essence of teamwork and cooperation. Teachers and guardians advocated observations that physical activity and play are important aspects of a normal growth. Hence, if a special child will engage in sport, although simplified, he links himself to other people. But the most important factor is the acceptance of his parents, peers and the whole society. Most of all, in the special games, a special child will be given one golden opportunity - to either push through

in the competition or to turn down and fade away into failure. Self-fulfillment through sports competitions will not only nurture self- confidence but will also put a special child a place in this world. And having a place in this world will make him feel secured, contented and more determined to reach his goal and be open to possibilities to become successful in life despite his disabilities. How did the Kiwanis Special Games evolve? The Philippine Luzon District of Kiwanis International was commissioned to participate in organizing a nationwide Special Olympics in coordination with the Joseph Kennedy Foundation and the Philippine Special Olympics Foundation. The 3-day Special Olympics experience gave the Kiwanis Club of Kalayaan the idea and initiative to hold its own special games. That’s how the Kiwanis Special Games begun. For 31 years, the Kiwanis Club of Kalayaan spearheaded every event of special games. And for all those years, other Kiwanis club volunteered as sponsors, coordinators, facilitators and referees. Their involvement had contributed towards the success of this annual event. The special games were held in different venues such as

Marikina Sports Center, University of the Philippines ( UP) oval, Rodriguez Sports Center, Camp Crame Sports Center, Camp Aguinaldo parade ground and Amoranto Sports Complex, where it has been held for 14 consecutive years now. Year after year, the participating Sped schools and sponsors continue to increase as they are eagerly look forward to this annual activity. As a sign of interest, the schools prepare the athletic uniforms of their participants. Parents are so excited to see their special children have the chance to compete, to win and to excel. It’s a wonderful experience to see the special children beaming with pride, showing around their medals at the end of each competition. Although, it’s a tiring day, joy and happiness pervade and the tiredness is nothing if they are to consider the chance given to them wherein they are the focus of the competition. The confidence they gain despite their incapabilities is more than enough motivation for the organizers to sit down and plan for the next special games.

“Words and messages written in a song are better heard and remembered” — these were my thoughts when I conceptualized this Kiwanis centennial song which will help enhance our club’s image and visibility in the communities where we belong and serve. Together with the service programs and projects that we do, this song can help us advocate and let others know “who we are” and “what is Kiwanis”. And since we tend to listen more attentively to the song, have a good recall of the lyrics, and enjoy it even more if sung with a dancing mode, it would be best to have a lively musical accompaniment. My love for Kiwanis, the wonderful people who touched my life as a Kiwanian, and my various Kiwanis experiences gave me the inspiration to write this song. At first, I thought of having the song for our club’s use, but I opted to share it with our district. Luckily, it got the nod from our beloved leaders of Kiwanis Philippine Luzon

District led by Governor Melvin. And with high hopes and dream, we pray that it will also be approved by Kiwanis International. As what Ephesians 1:3 says:”Jesus came so that empty lives would receive every spiritual blessing from heaven”. Every noble thing we do, great or small, gives us a tranquil and joyful spirit of sharing our blessings to others. As we now celebrate Christmas, and soon, the centennial year of Kiwanis, may we all be inspired to do more and reach out further despite the enormous challenges that beset us. May our passion transformed into action drive us even more to remain committed, consistently living by the Six Objects of Kiwanis, touching more people’s hearts and improving more lives, one child, one community at a time.

Children of the World”. May we all continue to trudge in the joy of genuine service and fellowship as we lead the way ahead towards another century of growth and service. Together as one Kiwanis family, let us sing this song of praise and thanksgiving for the 100th year celebration of Kiwanis, blending our differences in a harmony of loving, sharing, and living in true understanding, humility, and communication. After all, we are all blessed to form part of this very significant event of the “100 years of Kiwanis” in 2015, that will happen only “once” in our lifetime. At the same time, this song is also very timely for our 2015 ASPAC Convention which will be hosted by Philippine Luzon District in Clarkfield, Pampanga.

It is my fervent hope that this song will inspire us even more to work together, united as One Kiwanis in “Serving the

User-friendly service Story by Dick Isenhour

A new K-Kids club in the Philippines wasted no time in leaving a digital service footprint. The K-Kids Club of Mayamot Elementary School in Antipolo City recently celebrated Kiwanis One Day by teaching classmates, friends and family computer skills learned from its sponsoring Kiwanis Club of Antipolo West. Forming the K-Kids club and seeing it launch its first service project were logical next steps in the club’s longstanding relationship with the school, according to club President Wilfredo Pertubal. “For the past 26 years, we’ve been inspiring young graduates with our Leadership Excellence medals presented during every commencement exercise,” Pertubal explains. “We sponsor at least five students for this particular event.” Then this past school year, the club piloted a hands-on computer training program with third-grade students. “We saw this as a need because computer lessons are not taught in schools, especially public schools, in the Philippines,” Pertubal explains. “Many of these students are from families without the resources for computers or training on their own. This puts the children at a disadvantage, and many of them aren’t able to make it into high school.” With help from the One Laptop Per Child Foundation, which is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the club provided the school’s third-graders with XO computers. The learning tool is designed specifically for students in developing countries. Club members were able to teach students the XO operating system until each student could master the machine. “The school children learned computer skills quite easily through handson training,” Pertubal notes. “They were able to discover various programs designed for kids in elementary school. They mastered the XO operating system

in a very short time, becoming proficient in writing and reading.” Impressed with how quickly the kids absorbed what they were being taught, the Kiwanis club began exploring ways to expand the program to the rest of the school. Their search ended with the chartering of the K-Kids club in January and the scheduling of Sharing My Computer Know-how with a Friend day as an event for Kiwanis One Day in April. “Since they were trained ahead of their peers, the K-Kids thought of this activity as their first project during their summer break,” Pertubal says. To commemorate the day, the club produced a video using The Sharing Song as a background. And, of course, the events of the day will be stored forever in the memories of the participants. “I invited my younger sister, Regine, because I wanted to help her learn

computer and see for myself if I can share what I’ve learned,” an exuberant Raven Eve, K-Kids club treasurer, said after the day. “Next time, I will invite my best friends and probably some of my classmates too, and teach them some games and music.” “It’s an awesome feeling to see kids sharing their knowledge with family and friends,” Pertubal adds. “We hope to inspire more kids to do the same next year during our celebration of Kiwanis One Day.” The kids weren’t the only ones inspired by the day, however. Phillip Prudenciado, faculty advisor of the newly chartered K-Kids club, was so impressed by the activity he joined the Kiwanis club.
