On the part of our youth, Kiwanis offers opportunities for young people to hone leadership skills; learn about themselves and their communities thereby providing valuable services. We are actively encouraging the youth to be counted through the Service Leadership Programs and discover for themselves that they can contribute valuable service and make a difference at their young age. Most of all, we find enduring friendships of Kiwanis, meet business people and community leaders thereby giving us the opportunity to contribute in making the world a better place than when we found it. Kiwanis Dear Governors-elect of Asia Pacific Breaking News! growth!
Kiwanis embarks on a new campaign… a global campaign for
Global membership in our organization has been declining for several years and the Kiwanis International Board has taken a bold approach to make membership health a priority. It recently created and resourced a global campaign for growth, an initiative to strengthen the membership in local clubs and open more healthy clubs in new communities. The Global Campaign for Growth The global campaign for growth is a 5-year member-led initiative intended to strengthen Kiwanis membership by providing support to existing and new clubs, opening new clubs and building on the strength of those clubs that have been successful in maintaining or growing their membership bases. To achieve this, a structure of 2,7000 additional growth leaders around the world is being built at all levels of the organization, especially at the grassroots level. This team of campaign leaders will work in coordination and alignment with the traditional leadership at the region, district, division, and club levels. Preparations have been made to introduce the global campaign for growth in Vancouver. Important work remains to continue building the campaign structure at the district and division levels and to connect with the clubs. Campaign for Region chairs Asia-Pacific has been designated as its own region within the campaign, and the campaign efforts will be coordinated by Region Chair Tadao Oda. The campaign region chair is responsible for appointing the campaign district chairs to serve for a multiyear term and will likely contact you soon for dialogue on identifying candidates for this campaign multiyear position. Campaign district chairs The region chair will appoint campaign chairs based on the best fit for the campaign job dscription, which includes the following criteria: · New club building and/or club membership growth experience · Belongs to a growing (or maintaining) club · Commits to the campaign plan and strategies for multiple years · Effective communicator, presenter and facilitation · Skillful and diplomatic · Builds effective terms · Proficiency in the use of personal computers

Most of you have also appointed district membership and/or new club building chairs for 2013-14, which is the first official year of the campaign, and a very important one to its success. If your district has not made an appointment, we ask that you work in collaboration with the campaign region chair as they appoint a campaign district chair for a multiyear period and with the criteria mentioned above. For those districts that have been appointed growth chairs for 2013-14, please know that as a transition year, both groups of chairs will be necessary to the success of the membership efforts and are expected to work in collaboration with each other. You play an important role in this campaign with your support and endorsement of this initiative to all constituents in your district. District convention 2013 We ask for your support during your district conventions this year by including growth related workshops in your education sessions and by providing positive membership growth messages during general sessions. We count on your support and anticipate great excitement as we are implementing a plan to grow and strengthen Kiwanis in all the local communities of your districts! Looking forward to seeing you in Vancouver,

Both PMSEA and Kiwanis have on-going greening programs in support of NGP, President Aquino’s ambitious reforestation program that aims to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of open, degraded and denuded forests nationwide. Through the partnership formalized by PMSEA President Louie Sarmiento and Kiwanis International Philippine Luzon District
Governor-elect Nelson Tan during simple signing of a memorandum of understanding at a simple ceremony last week, the two groups vowed to jointly implement a nationwide tree-planting activity that will help the government achieve its ambitious “greening” targets. In a telephone interview, Sarmiento said they are to plant 500,000 seedlings in various parts of the country. “The partnership is in support of President Aquino’s flagship reforestation program and as part of Kiwanis and PMSEA’s commitment to promote and protect the environment,” he said. Under the memorandum of understanding, Kiwanis will identify the area where the reforestation project/tree-planting activities will be implemented in coordination with the concerned local government units; enlist the assistance of the members of the local Kiwanis division or district to participate in the reforestation project/tree-planting activities and ensure the survival of the planted materials.

Division IV-B Draws Strength from Growth and Unity
If there is something good that can be alluded to super typhoon Yolanda with the destruction and havoc it brought to the country, it is the outpouring of worldwide support and sympathy in unprecedented magnitude. Add that to the distinct resilience of the Filipinos and the world saw a people help each other to rise and survive. The catastrophic event in Tacloban, Leyte saw the Kiwanis of Philippine Luzon District in unified action, though not really the first time. In various divisions, intensified relief operations were immediately conducted. Division IV-B Lt. Governor Lolit Salazar made an urgent call to all member-clubs to gather, sort and re-pack donations for the typhoon victims. Pick-up date and a direct transport to the relief distiribution centers in the calamity area, using the trucks of PDG Toto Gonzales were set . Turned over by
division IV-B were more than a hundred boxes of used and unused towels and blankets, 100 pillows, bottled water, canned goods, biscuits, noodles and about 125 cavans of rice. Lt. Governor Lolit also donated out P20, 000 cash in the name of her home club. While much of the effort of clubs in the first quarter of the Kiwanis Administrative year centered on relief operations, three clubs of the division pursued the building of two KKids clubs, as follows: San Lorenzo Elementary School (sponsor-KC Chrysanthemum; co-sponsors- KC Laguna Gems and KC Pacita Diamonds and Rosario Complex Elementary School ( sponsor –KC Laguna Gems ; co- sponsor-KC Chrysanthemum), both in San Pedro, Laguna. All international and district dues as well as the necessary forms for documentation have been submitted to Kiwanis International.
Explicit in her acceptance speech during the division take- over on Oct 13, 2013,the goalswere set by LTG Lolit for Division IV-B in AY 20132014: a. Net growth of one (1) member per club by December 31, 2013 b. Minimum club membership of 25 c. Attendance of at least ten members in every meeting and service project of the club. d. Chartering five (5) new clubs. e. Minimum delegation at 30% of
club membership to district activities. f. More Kiwanis signage and media exposure for building Kiwanis image. During her official assumption of duty on Oct 13, 2013 Lt. Governor Lolit Salazar inaugurated the Kiwanis Library at the Chrysanthemum Village Elementary School (CVES), a division -wide project implemented by her predecessor PLG Angel Prudente. Now, the Kiwanis library is a learning center and haven for the K-Kids of CVES. It’s not all work at Division IV-B. It celebrated a holiday party on December 13, 2013 at 5K Resort Calamba, Laguna with a Hawaiian motif. There were Christmas caroling, hula dance presentations, games and raffle prizes shared. It was a well-deserved fellowship for the hard-working division.

The objective of the activity is to promote awareness of our soldiers on RA 9262 and responsible parenthood. During the open forum, soldiers asked questions related to their duties and obligations to their families the development of their children into good citizens notwithstanding their distant work locations. The activity was a success and the KCPA planned to go to all unit of the Philippine Army to conduct the same lecture.

cial role, they play in molding our minds and the minds of the future generations. This year 2013, UNESCO (United Nation Educational and Scientific Cultural Organization) will focus its celebration on quality teachers for Global Citizenship despite our cultural diversity. Looking back twent y years ago, UNESCO declared October 5,1993 as the first “World Teachers Day” and in 2008, inspired by the success of that celebration, October 5 every year was declared as “World Teachers Day”. This year, UNESCO’s slogan is “A Call for Teachers”. Likewise, in the Philippines, President Aquino, recently signed proclamation no.242 declaring September 5 to October 5 every year as the National Teachers Month. All over the country the Department of Education and Culture observed the “World Teachers Day” calling for more active participation of teachers in nation building. In Antipolo City, Barangay Mayamot (culled from the Spanish words maya mucho) a day before the observance of World Teacher’s Day, the Mayamot Elementary School headed by its school principal Ms. Joyany ST. Gutierrez gave out “Certificate of Recognition” to twelve outstanding teachers, out of more than a hundred, for their outstanding qualities and sincere dedication to work, their exemplary achievement and contribution to promote a sense of pride and inspiration to the teaching profession. The mentors who received the awards were Florence DV. Torres, Herminia G. Vergara, Remedios C. Castillo, Selma F. Sebanes, Felisicimo V. Ballecer, Josephine M. Pacardo, Floriza C. Masikip, Marynn N. Berja, Michelle E. Castalone, Dolores E. Naval, Rozalie Z. Espesor and Aireen DJ. Geronimo. The event was attended by hundreds of school children, parents and other school teachers. The Kiwanis Club of Antipolo West was one of the sponsors who supported the initiative. The Club has given this kind of Recognition Award to the teachers of the said school last year, as our expression of support and gratitude to the role of the Teachers in molding the minds of the young children. Our legacy of giving “Leadership Excellence Medal” to selected graduating students continuous as a priority, a project we have done for the past 27 years. A recent thrust of the club however, is to enhance Student Digital Literacy through the use of computers donated by the Child Foundation OLPC Phil. Inc. , our development partner.

On a late Sunday morning in December, an assembly line of people folding, binding, and packing a huge pile of blankets was seen at the Kiwanis clubhouse in Intercity Homes Subdivision in Muntinlupa City. Led by members of the Kiwanis Club of Intercity Next Generation (KC Next Gen), the group was a mix of, children and parents, neighbors and friends, whose mission was to pack some 500 blankets for donation to families in Bantayan Island, Cebu, one of the 343 municipalities affected by super typhoon Yolanda (international name “Haiyan”). These 500 blankets belonged to the last batch of blankets raised from the Blankets for Visayas (BFV) Project, a joint undertaking of KC Next Gen (Metro Manila, Philippines), Kiwanis Club of Metro Tagbilaran (Bohol, Philippines), and the Next Generation Kiwanis of Columbus (Nebraska, USA) to respond to the

needs of disaster victims in Central Philippines. Weeks after a 7-magnitude earthquake hit Bohol Province in mid-October, KC Next Gen banded together with these two Kiwanis Clubs in the Blankets for Bohol Project –fund drive to buy 1000 blankets for 1000 families in 10 days. KC Metro Tagbilaran served as the local partner for distributing blankets to disaster victims in Bohol, while Next Generation
Kiwanis of Columbus served as the focal point for reaching out to USbased donors who are interested to help. When Typhoon Yolanda devastated Central Philippines on November 8, 2013, the BFB Project became a the same vehicle for raising blankets for typhoon victims and was re-programmed as Blankets for Visayas (BFV) Project to include lesser-served, typhoon-hit areas. Heeding calls for extension, the project it ran for another 10 days and within a 20-day period was able to raise a total of 2,090 blankets – more than double its original target. These blankets have been shipped to families in 1) Bohol, 2) Calubian, Leyte, 3) Iloilo, 4) Tabon Island, Aklan, 5) Basey, Southern Samar, and 6) Bantayan Island, Cebu. The BFV Project aboanded with stories of actual of kindness, generosity, and compassion. It told of the heartwarming story of how young members, age 10-12 years old, of the K-Kids Club of Wake Robin Elementary School in Nebraska unhesitatingly cut back on their Christmas party and other expenses so they can donate 50 blan-

kets to disaster victims. Alumni of Ateneo School of Government in San Fernando, La Union quickly responded to the call by sending 24 hand-woven blankets. A group of friends foregoChristmas gift-giving in exchange for a donation enough to buy 147 blankets. There were philanthropic acts such as one made by a local showbiz veteran who donated as many as 400 blankets after being moved by the earnestness of KC Next Gen to do community service. And then there were those individuals who willingly donated to the cause despite personal struggles. Finally, there was KC Metro Tagbilaran, while the original recipient of 1000 blankets, graciously offered to get only 300 blankets for Bohol so that more people may be helped in typhoonravaged areas. New and unique partnerships were forged. While collaboration among local Kiwanis clubs were common, partnering with an international club is rare. Despite the members not having personally met each other the three-way partnership between the Project’s or-
ganizers was effective because of clear and defined roles . KC Next Gen led the design of the campaign, rallied support from its local network, and was in charge of all logistical requirements. KC Metro Tagbilaran was the node for distributing blankets to families in Bohol; and Next Generation Kiwanis of Columbus expanded the network of potential donors and more importantly, widened the doors for US-based clubs and individuals to participate in the project’s noble cause. Another significant partner in the Project is KC Next Gen’s parent club, KC Intercity Homes, which extended manpower and logistical support. Newfound partners include the Kaibigan ng mga Kabataang May Kanser (Iloilo), Pascual Family (Leyte), RevivePh (a network of NGOs and individuals supporting Yolanda relief efforts), Muntinlupa City Government and St. Joseph Parish (Cebu), who took charge in distributing the goods and ensured that one blanket is given to one family in need. Also notable was the support
from the clubs of Division III-D, Philippine Luzon District (where KC Next Gen belongs), Kiwanis Club of Gossau-Flawil (Switzerland), and Kiwanis International Trustees Jane Erickson, Poly Lat, and Marcel Kreienbuhl, whose combined donation was able to purchase an additional 700 blankets. The BFV Project, while a small undertaking, is a demonstration of solidarity, of the local concept of bayanihan that is global in character. Moved by genuine intent to help families they have never met, people from every corner of the world have come together to send warmth to families in the Visayas. Actions truly speak louder than words and in the case of the overwhelming support for BFV Project it drove a clear message to Filipinos: Pilipinas hindi ka nag-iisa (“Philippines you are not alone.”)

KIWANIS MISSION:
BRINGING HOPE AND THE “STAR OF LIGHT” IN THE VISAYAS REGION By: Imm. Past Dist. Governor TOTO P. GONZALES
The most disastrous and devastating typhoon Yolanda (international name “Haiyan’) that hit land in recorded history may have caused terrible calamity and unprecedented destruction in the Visayas region, Philippines, but the firm resolved to bounce back from the disaster has become apparent immediately right after disaster struck. The Filipino spirit of “bayanihan” (unity and cooperation in times of need) played a vital role in ensuring that wrecked homes are starting to be rebuilt along with the lives of the affected people. In the midst of the calamity, the various clubs and divisions of the Kiwanis Philippine Luzon District took charge and sent off their humanitarian contingent to Visayas. Reaching out to our distraught fellowmen was such a wonderful, yet humbling experience. It was a golden opportunity to share our blessings and make our affected brethren feel the warmth of love after going through the
wrath of the super typhoon. The mission and the travel itself were not easy, but because of our ardent desire to help and extend assistance, we were able to overcome all obstacles. With God’s grace, we were able to reach the areas, went on and completed the mission. Generous donations from fellow Kiwanians and generous benefactors poured in allowing us to bring two truckloads of goods to the people of Leyte. The relief items comprised the following: 6,000 food packs, 800 sacks of clothes, 20 brand new fishing boat engines, 600 pieces of bag pack, 600 blankets (queen size), 400 pieces of tetra pack juice, 400 cup cakes, 400 pieces of cereals, 300 pairs of slippers, 200 pieces of toys and various educational materials, 360 cavans of rice, 10 sacks of bath soap, 100 boxes of bottled water and 80 Christmas lanterns, among others. In spite of the very unfortunate calamity, something inspiring took place
as the tragedy drew out from us love and compassion for our fellow men which translated into concrete actions and virtues of unity and sacrifice in times of need. Further, we brought eighty (80) Christmas lanterns to various parishes of Archdiocese of Palo, Leyte to relive the spirit of Christmas. The “parol’ or star of light symbolizes hope for a brighter future. It also symbolizes our distinct Filipino culture and character of ingenuity, solidarity, love and desire for peace. During our mission, we were able to distribute relief goods to areas of Tolosa, Palo, Dulag, Tanauan, Ormoc City, Baybay, Albuera and Kananga. The project was made possible through the special support and participation of the Kiwanis Club of Angeles City, Kiwanis Club of Purple Heart, Division II-B, Division IV-A, Division IIIC, Kiwanis Club of Mont Dore and the Kiwanis Club of Malabon Achievers. The travel was quite long and tiring, but we felt blessed in knowing that we were able to bring hope and happiness to the hundreds of people, especially children, who were seeking for care and comfort after going through great loss and devastation. Indeed, it will go down in history as the most fulfilling, memorable and rewarding highlight of our Kiwanis journey in 2013. With the conduct of the mission, we were able to contribute also to the realization of KI theme for this year of “Providing Bridge for the Children of the World” particularly when we provided bag packs for children complete with blanket, towel, slippers, biscuits, fruit juice, cereals and toys. We may not have had the grand opportunity to respond in a dramatic fashion due to the magnitude of destruction, but we are very pleased that in our own way we were able to render service when and where it is most needed.
