NSW President’s foreword
Remarkable expertise delivers exquisite quality again
As the President of the Master Builders Association NSW, I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to you all through the pages of the Newcastle Regional Excellence in Building Awards Magazine. This publication stands as a testament to the exceptional achievements within our industry and the profound impact we collectively make on the landscape of the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast, and New England regions of NSW.
The Newcastle Regional Excellence in Building Awards holds a special place in our hearts as we come together to applaud the remarkable accomplishments of both companies and individuals in the construction industry. It is a celebration of not only bricks and mortar, but also the profound influence the built environment exerts on the very fabric of our society. The shared sense of pride we feel towards our contributions is truly deserving.
In reflecting upon our industry’s significance, let us recognise that the building and construction sector is unparalleled in fostering growth for small businesses across Australia. Serving as the largest employer of full-time workers and the primary provider of apprenticeships, our industry extends its hand to cultivate opportunities like no other. This steadfast commitment to nurturing talent underscores our dedication to the future and the prosperity it holds.
In the year 2023, our industry once again demonstrated its remarkable expertise, delivering projects of exquisite quality and craftsmanship. Our diligent judges embarked on rigorous onsite inspections, assessing projects valued at a sum of $500 million. Their resounding admiration for the industry’s skill and professionalism was unmistakable, a true testament to the unwavering dedication of our members.
Allow me to express my gratitude to the judges who each year graciously volunteer their time and expertise. Their discerning evaluations and deliberations stand as a testament to their commitment to excellence, as they faced the arduous task of selecting the finest entries from a pool of outstanding entrants.
I also extend my thanks to the sponsors for their continued support of the Newcastle Excellence in Building Awards. On behalf of The Master Builders Association of NSW, I extend my congratulations to all entrants and winners. Your pursuit of excellence is a true inspiration to us all.

The builder has delivered on their intent to create a healthy and comfortable high-performing home, that excludes moisture and humidity, along with the mould that they can generate. The key considerations of insulation and ventilation were primarily addressed by the use of the SIPS (structural insulated panels) building system, double glazing and a HRV (heat recovery ventilation) system that operates 24/7 to remove moist, stale air from inside, to be replaced with temperature-controlled, filtered fresh air from outside.

Faced with constructing this large swimming pool over an aquifer, during a period of extreme wet weather, the builder has had to apply much effort to ongoing de-watering so that work could proceed through to completion. At 22 metres long, this fully featured pool integrates well with its similarly proportioned host dwelling.

KINGSTON BUILDING PTY LTD
Phone: 02 4926 4666
Kingston Building, through its submission of its residential construction operations, has shown its obligation to their responsibilities in Work, Health and Safety for their employees, sub-contractors, or visitors engaged for their residential projects. Auditing of SafeWork NSW compliance management systems and reported positive safety interactions with local inspectors presents Kingston as a committed Principal Contractor to WHS across its residential sites, which SafeWork NSW recognises as a fast-moving, challenging, and volatile area within the NSW construction industry. Highlighting a commitment from Kingston Building’s submission, “The health and safety of personnel, whether they are employees, sub-contractors, or visitors, is extremely important to Kingston.” SafeWork NSW values this commitment to safety from a principal contractor due to the positive safety influence they have on the building and construction workers engaged to carry out high-risk tasks on their residential construction projects.

BESIX Watpac undertook four major upgrades to the Army base facilities to ensure the base would facilitate growth and training into the future. During the complete works over 93 per cent of all waste was reclaimed and went on to be recycled. A complete refurbishment of the existing dining and preparation facilities, whilst in full use, meant large-scale temporary facilities had to be provided at all times. A state-of-theart mechanical workshop complex was also constructed to enable all maintenance to be carried out on the base. Additional work carried out included complex scaffolding to a height of 40 metres to replace a circular roof on top of the existing water tower.

The functional reconfiguration satisfies Childcare SEPP and Building Code of Australia requirements.

KINGSTON BUILDING PTY LTD
Quirindi Public School
Phone: 02 4926 4666
The building was originally constructed as a home for the Munro family in 1893.
It was acquired by the Department of Education in the 1950s on land to build a new primary school. With a Welsh slate roof, bullnosed verandah and decorative cast iron lacework, the building is historically significant to the region.
Key to the restoration process was acquiring sufficient quantities of Welsh slate to match slate salvaged from the existing building.
With little maintenance, over time, the building had acquired a leaking roof, redundant mechanical systems, mould, and flaking internal and external paint.
The result of Kingston’s work is a fine example of what can be achieved with a dedicated team on a limited budget.

RICHARD CROOKES CONSTRUCTIONS PTY LTD

Phone: 0422 901 728
Design: SJB (Architecture) and Nic Graham & Associates (Interior Design Studio)
This project involved innovative solutions to unique challenges, to preserve the heritage elements of the beloved Newcastle David Jones building from the 1890s. Heritage requirements called for all timber columns, bearers and joists to be retained. Timber floors required realigning to their original levels, using synchronous hydraulic jacking to lower three whole floors within the building. Restoration of the historic façades was key to retaining the building’s presentation to the city. Richard Crookes Constructions undertook substantial façade engineering to develop a heritage and safety compliant design to replace deteriorated windows. The high level of detail and design is extraordinary.
A seven-day program was required during Covid to return this magnificent heritage building back to the city, as a first-class hotel facility.

An addition to the existing community facility, Reeman Constructions has delivered an impressive multi-use facility from the local area. A standout of the new facility also was the high level finish of the new bathroom facilities. The connection of the two buildings was through a large triple skinned brick wall, which required large steel sections and the removal of the wall, all whilst the remaining centre was operational. During the construction period the area received nearly one metre of rain, which added significant issues with material handling and onsite construction.
