ANGUS Angus Australia Focussed on R&D

Angus Australia has identified a need for increased R&D investment to ensure members remain at the forefront of the latest genetic and breeding technologies Page 8

As a member based organisation, Angus Australia is continually looking at opportunities to add value to the businesses of its members, and to enhance and promote the value of Angus genetics within the Australian beef industry. Consistent with this approach, Angus Australia has greatly increased its involvement in recent years in research and development (R&D) initiatives. The increased involvement in R&D represents a large transition from traditional breed society activities, and is consistent with Angus Australia’s vision of being a member-based, not-for-profit, innovation focused company servicing seedstock and commercial producers of Angus and Angus-influenced cattle. Angus Australia’s Strategic Projects Manager, Mr Christian Duff, said "Angus Australia is now extremely pro-active in seeking R&D opportunities that will be to the benefit of members and the beef supply chain utilising Angus cattle and Angus beef products". "With the end of the Beef Cooperative Research Centre (Beef CRC) in 2012, there have been some significant changes to R&D investment in beef technologies".

"Angus Australia has identified a need for increased R&D investment to ensure members remain at the forefront of the latest genetic and breeding technologies". Angus Australia’s most significant investment in R&D is the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP). Now planning for its eighth cohort, the ASBP is a young sire program that involves joining approximately 40 sires a year to 2000 Angus females to produce 25 progeny per sire using fixed time artificial insemination. The ASBP aims to a) generate progeny test data on modern Angus bulls, particularly for hard to measure traits such as feed efficiency, abattoir carcase measurements, meat quality attributes and female reproduction; b) generate data for the validation and refinement of Angus BREEDPLAN; and c) build a comprehensive phenotype and genotype database on Australian Angus animals for genomic technology validation, research and development. Mr Duff explained "while the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program was the most visible of Angus CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

Australia’s R&D activities, Angus Australia also had increasing involvement in a myriad of other applied and strategic R&D initiatives relating to breeding and genetic technologies". "Several such R&D initiatives currently being undertaken includes the collection of bone-out retail beef yield data, measuring immune competence and resilience in Angus weaners, identifying Angus genetics for northern Australia production systems and measuring feed intake on pasture." "A key component of Angus Australia’s investment in R&D is forming collaborative partnerships with private and government organisations, both within Australia and internationally". "Over recent years, Angus Australia has established valued partnerships with organisations such as Meat & Livestock Australia, the University of New England, the University of Illinois, the University of Missouri, CSIRO, NSW Department of Primary Industries, Zoetis Animal Genetics, Rangers Valley Feedlot and Vetoquinol". "This is additional to Angus Australia’s ongoing collaboration with the Animal Genetics & Breeding Unit (AGBU) and the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) with regards to the development and delivery of the Angus BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation.

Angus Australia’s most significant investment in R&D is the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP).

ASBP aims to generate progeny test data on the modern Angus Bulls, particularly for hard to measure traits. Page 9

ANGUS AUSTRALIA Set To Launch New Software Tools Angus Australia has recently launched a range of new internet based tools for Angus beef producers in Australia. The range of software tools, to be released under the banner of angus.tech, are part of a major software development initiative designed to develop tools that are specifically tailored to meet the needs of producers who are using Angus genetics within their beef enterprise. Angus Australia’s Breed Development & Extension Manager, Mr Andrew Byrne explained the new tools aim to improve the profitability of Angus genetics within the beef supply chain by enabling Angus breeders to more easily identify the most appropriate genetics for their enterprise. The tools set for release over coming months will focus on enabling Angus breeders to seamlessly search Angus Australia’s comprehensive animal and member database. "Using the Angus Database Search facility, Angus breeders can access information for any individual animal recorded with Angus Australia, or once signed in CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

"The new facility is similar to the Animal Enquiry facility that has been available on the Angus Australia website for some time, but has been re-developed to be a more modern and intuitive facility with a range of valuable new features". Of particular note is the availability of a new suite of selection tools, known as AngusSELECT, that assist both seedstock and commercial producers with the identification of Angus genetics that are most aligned with their breeding goals and objectives. Mr Byrne explained "the new AngusSELECT suite consists of six different selection tools, being the Angus SaleSELECT, Angus SemenSELECT, Angus MemberSELECT, Angus ASBPSELECT, Angus ExportSELECT, and Angus HeiferSELECT tools".

"Using the AngusSELECT tools, producers looking to utilise Angus genetics can carefully scrutinise the registered Angus animals available for sale, identify suitable semen for use within their artificial breeding programs, identify Angus Australia members in their area, and identify bulls of interest from within the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program". Another major component of the new software initiative is a re-development of the database systems that are utilised by Angus Australia to construct systems that are tailored specifically to the needs of the Angus Australia organisation and its members. Mr Byrne outlined that one of major objectives will be to greatly improve the exchange of registration and performance data between Angus Australia and its members. genetics within the beef supply chain by assisting with the identification of Angus genetics that are most aligned with their breeding goals and objectives. Using the Angus SELECT suite of tools,

breeders can search and sort the registered Angus animals currently available for sale, identify suitable semen for use within their breeding program, identify Angus Australia members in their area, identify bulls of

interest from within the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program, and objectively select the replacement heifers that are carrying the most suitable genetics for use within the commercial beef enterprise.

CLUNIE RANGE ANGUS SALE Clunie Range Angus will offer 140 bulls “Made of Tough Stuff on Friday 4th August 2017. This will be the largest offering to date and is the result of a significant planned expansion program over the past 5 years. The purchase of a number of individual donor cows from genuine dispersal sales, as well as the purchase of the highly regarded Cudgell Creek herd in southern NSW has given Clunie Range a number of new female family lines. An expansion of both AI programs and Embryo programs have allowed for a significant increase in numbers of the cow herd. Co-principal Brett Guest says that the extra numbers has allowed even greater selection pressure, and is confident that this year’s sale offering is of the best quality so far. Like all studs last year’s sale average was high, but the most pleasing thing to Clunie Range was the positive commentary on the consistency and quality of the bulls offered. This year, while

they have taken a step up in quality, a conscious effort has been made to increase numbers, allowing more buyers to operate with confidence. The Guest family are fourth generation Angus breeders that were breeding commercial Angus cattle long before commencing the stud. Multiple generations of pregnancy testing, semen testing, semen morphology testing and continuous pressure on the cow herd to perform under the pressure of high stocking rates, have contributed to developing a strong reputation of being “Made of tough Stuff”. The Clunie Range bulls have been performing exceptionally well locally around Goondiwindi, Moree and Tablelands areas, but also have many years of performance runs on the board in areas such as Cloncurry, Richmond, Bedourie, Blackall, Jericho, Longreach, Alpha and basically all over Qld and NSW, and have been sold to every state. The key ingredient to the success of Clunie Range, is the quality of the cow herd that

have the runs on the board where performance under pressure is concerned. Females are selected for phenotype as well as performance, with multiple generations of performance data on both stud and commercial cattle. Retained ownership on steers and heifers, along with modern technology, play a huge roll in information gathering. As well as having a cow herd that is tough, Clunie Range maintain high performance on grass and in feedlots. Recent highlights include multiple heifers upon ultrasound scanning over 8% for IMF, with the bull Clunie Range Legend L348 scanning 8.2% in April 2017. Clunie Range cattle weigh like lead because of the depth of body and thickness and this always results in high dressing percentages and yields. High marbling is also a well known Clunie Range trait, with females recently marbling as high as score 7. Brett believes the demand for Clunie Range Bulls comes in a large way from the “word of mouth effect”.

BELGIAN BLUE

BLUE BREED ARE HIGHLY POPULAR Belgium Blue’s are known for their excellent carcass yield and performance

THE Belgian Blue cattle breed is currently one of the most important beef breeds in the world today. Its popularity and acceptance is based initially on the production of an exceptionally lean, high bone out, high yielding carcase. Further acceptance of the Belgian Blue is for its outstanding results in cross breeding, culminating in high efficiency, excellent performance, superb carcass quality, enormous carcass yield and most importantly exceptionable temperament. These positives have resulted in tens of thousands of Belgian Blue cross calves being born in Australia each year with producers extremely satisfied. No other breed has the degree of muscling or extreme high carcase yield that the Belgian Blue has been selected for. Belgian Blues originated in the Ardenne Hills region of Belgium at the end of the nineteenth century when native dairy cattle were crossed with introduced Shorthorn beef cattle. The distinctive blue roan colouring – hence the name – is present in varying degrees in Belgian Blue cattle and is attributed to their Shorthorn ancestry. Initially bred as a dual-purpose breed, by the 1950’s a more heavily muscled animal was being selected for, resulting in today’s solid, beef breed. The Belgian Blue breed was introduced into Australia in 1988 and the Australian Belgian Blue Cattle Society Inc. was formed in the same year. Colours can be blue roan, blue roan and white, black and white, or just white. In other words, colours range from pure white through to black, with any degree of blue roan in between. Average weight for mature bulls range from 1 000 to 1 200 kilograms, and for cows 650 – 900 kilograms. Average birth weights for calves are 40-55 kilograms (pure-bred) and 30-45 kilograms (cross-bred). The Belgian Blue is a naturally horned, large animal with a well rounded outline and a quite distinctive, heavily muscled frame. The shoulder, back, loin and rump are all prominently muscled. The head is light and the back is straight. The hips are hidden under a sloping rump, the tail set is prominent and the skin is fine. With strong yet light bones, Belgian Blues move freely. They usually exhibit early maturation. The breed is known for its very docile temperament in both pure-bred and cross-bred animals.

THE PERFECT BEAST The Bazadaise breed of cattle provide an exceptional combination of high muscling and ability to marble off grass.

Carcase quality and excellent flavour of the Bazadaise breeds meat is confirmed by butchers and consumers

Page 20

This is the foundation of the Bazadaise breeds outstanding carcase characteristics. The fine conformation and quality of the carcase lead to high levels of meat production meaning more meat and less waste. Indeed the carcase quality and excellent flavour of the Bazadaise breeds meat is confirmed by butchers and consumers. Butchers value the very high meat production that the Bazadaise produces and are happy to be able to offer their clients meat of excellent eating quality with respect to its tenderness, fine grain, juiciness with at the same time, an even coverage of fat. Used in cross breeding, the Bazadaise breed of cattle possesses great qualities to allow the producer to achieve optimum results. The strong genetic traits of the Bazadaise cattle breed bring about an improved confirmation, exceptional length, increased weight gain and higher carcase evaluations. Bazadaise bulls are proving that they leave their stamp on the product they produce with a well developed hind quarter and thickness throughout. The growth impetus given produces profitable, high growth offspring and a high quality, high yielding carcase.

The Bazadaise breed of cattle have the qualities necessary to produce one calf per year. They are easy calving which is understandable because the mothers have a good broad pelvis and a low birth weight for the calves. They are also renowned for their grass finishing ability, mobility, hardiness and strong muscular development. The Bazadaise beef cattle breed does have a considerable advantage of combining a quality carcase of succulent meat, with an excellent feed conversion ability and resistance to extreme conditions. Its efficient food conversion rate derives from the harsh nature from which the breed had its birth, having to make the most of what was available. Because of the difficult conditions it has experienced throughout its long history the Bazadaise cattle breed have developed a true robustness. The Bazadaise beef cattle breed offers great potential as an economical producer of

BELMONT RED WHY USE BELMONT REDS? Belmont Red has a unique advantage over British, European and Bos Indicus breeds.

â??

Belmont Reds have adaptation traits equal to the Bos Indicus breeds

As a sire breed, the tropically adapted Belmont Red has a unique advantage over British, European and Bos Indicus breeds for use in crossbreeding. Belmont Reds possess all of the production and beef quality traits of the British and European Bos Taurus breeds, with the added benefits of superior adaptation traits including tick and parasite resistance, heat tolerance and drought resistance, combined with

IMPRESSIVE : BELMONT RED PHOTO:CONTRIBUTED Page 22

calving ease and small birth weight calves. Belmont Reds have adaptation traits equal to the Bos Indicus breeds, with the added advantage of very high fertility including early sexual maturity in both males and females with females able to reconceive at low weights and whilst lactating, in conjunction with the Belmont Reds superior carcass qualities and renowned docile temperament.

BELMONT RED

THE BELMONT RED OBJECTIVE

At its inception the objective for the Belmont Red breed was to blend an average of the genes from the Africander and from the British. Adaptive traits such as easy calving, parasite resistance, disease resistance, heat tolerance and hardiness, as well as meat quality traits and fertility were inherited from the Africander. Productive traits, such as fertility and growth, as well as carcase and meat quality were also inherited from the British. Genetically the Africander component distinguishes the Belmont from other Composite breeds based on the Brahman such as Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmaster, Brangus, Charbray and Braford. The range and combinations of established breeds included in the Belmont Red provided it with all the desirable traits of the British, European and other Tropical breeds. The herd book remains open and grading up to pure Belmont can simply be accomplished in three back crosses. The Belmont can therefore be established by simply grading up from any base cow herd through three generations of mating to registered Belmont bulls, the fourth crop being registerable as pure Belmonts. This allows the Belmont Breeders to tap into a broad genetic pool and retain desirable gene combinations from the parent breeds. With the correct selection programs, the productive desirable gene combinations can be accumulated and fixed. In Australia the Belmont Red is the only Composite breed that has been developed from crossing the Africander breed with British breeds. The Africander genetic component makes the Belmont uniquely different from the Brahman composites. Belmonts are a

Belmont Red cow and calf. tropically adapted Bos Taurus. The Belmont Breed Society has based its standards on productive and adaptive traits that can be objectively measured and are known to be heritable. Selection is therefore based on accurate measurements of traits that are heritable and economically important in terms of beef production. Any Belmont animal must therefore be reared in a herd which has adopted a system of performance recording that has been approved by Council, such as Breedplan. Although the colour is predominantly red, selection for this, or other aesthetic traits are generally not considered important. The Belmont is about a philosophy of breeding highly productive, easy care cattle, that are adapted to their environment. In this respect the Belmont differs significantly from ALL other breeds. The Belmont Breed Society regulations specify the following breed (genetic) content: ■ African Sanga breeds (Africander or similar) – max.1/2, min 1/4. ■ Temperate breeds (British or European) – max. 1/2, min. 1/2. ■ Indicus breeds (Brahman or similar) – max 1/4.

This allows the Belmont Breeders to tap into a broad genetic pool and retain desirable gene combinations from the parent breeds

BELTED GALLOWAY

HOW IT ALL BEGAN The breed started and was developed in the austere hill country in the Galloway area of south-west Scotland and is believed to have originated more than 300 years ago the result of crossing the Galloway with the Dutch Lakenvelder.

Belted Galloways have several traits which will fit in with just about any crossbreeding program

The "Beltie" is naturally polled and has striking colourings of black, red or dun, with a white belt. For sheer eye appeal, no breed is more distinctive in the paddock and the term "beautiful Belties" is often used. They have a "double coat " of hair, consisting of a long, shaggy overcoat and a soft, thick undercoat, providing excellent insulation in cold, bleak weather and reducing the amount of feed intake required to maintain body weight. Belted Galloways have several traits which will fit in with just about any crossbreeding program and the targeting of all domestic and export markets. Belted Galloway are known for a number of their rare and quality traits. Some of these traits are listed below:

LONGEVITY

Belted Galloways have a reputation for longevity – many are reputed to live until 17 to 20 years of age.

Page 24

HARDINESS

The Belted Galloway’s heavy, double hair coat means that heat loss is reduced, winter feed costs are significantly less and rain hardly penetrates in cold, wet weather. The Belted Galloway cow has about 4000 hairs to the square inch making the coat resistant to severe cold. "Belties" have, in fact, been used on stations with an annual rainfall as low as 150 mm and with their superior foraging ability, have thrived in these harsh, pastoral areas.

ADAPTABILITY

"Belties" are able to adapt to a variety of climatic conditions. They have good foraging abilities, ensuring that they thrive where other breeds fail. The coat is shed in hot weather, thus making the "Beltie" a highly adaptable and versatile breed for a variety of climatic conditions.

FERTILE BRRED: THE BELTED GALLOWAY IS RENOWNED FOR THEIR RELIABILITY TO PRODUCE HEALTHY STOCK PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED:

HIGH FERTILITY The Belted Galloway is an extremely fertile breed; the cows are long lived, regular breeders and are noted for their ability to produce a healthy, well nourished calf at weaning, even in the harshest of conditions. Some Belted Galloways have had two separate calves in one year. One cow in Australia has even produced three lots of twins in a row.

Australian Belted Galloway Association Inc

The distinctive ‘belt’ marks the naturally polled, adaptable and hardy breed of the Belted Galloway. The Belted Galloway originated in South-West Scotland and adapts readily to the diverse Australian conditions. With colourings of black, dun and red, the distinctive white belt is a prominent feature of the Belted Galloway breed. The adaptability and fertility, coupled with a long life span makes the Belted Galloway an excellent choice for your farming operation. The Belted Galloway AGM will be held the last weekend in July in Melbourne. There will be the Annual General Meeting, a members forum as well as a farm tour. In 2018 Australia will be hosting the World Galloway Conference in Adelaide. Delegates from all over the world shall be in attendance and it will be run during Adelaide Show time.

BONSMARA

AFRICAN ORIGINS: THE VERY FIRST INTRODUCTION TO BONSMARA CATTLE IN SOUTH AFRICA CAME IN 1984 PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED:

THE INTRODUCTION OF BONSMARA'S INTO AUSTRALIA Article by Morton Hudson

The survivors were gratefully received and so the Bonsmara breed had arrived from Africa

The very first introduction to Bonsmara cattle in South Africa came in 1984 when I travelled as tour leader with a group of Belmont Red breeders and other invited cattlemen to see the breed which had been developed similarly; although previously, to our CSIRO developed Belmont Red and also inspect the comparisons with the Belmont Red/Bonsmara cattle bred with BR semen provided by co-operators in Australia (Belmont Research Station, Tremere and Mt Eugene) for use in the project. Other cattle breeds of interest to all our group were also included in the tour. The hospitality and camaraderie of the R.S.A cattlemen made the trip a huge success, and impressed upon us the necessity to import some of the livestock to Australia in spite of the ban on imports due to the threat of Foot and Mouth disease which was endemic in R.S.A.

This reality had to be accepted and the path for importations would prove to be long, slow and expensive. Firstly the protocol had to be established to allow importation from a Foot and Mouth disease endemic country. The opportunity to get started came in 1992, when CSIRO called for co-operators to financially assist the importation of Boran and Tuli embryos from South Africa which culminated in Boran and Tuli weaners being discharged from a Russian Antinov aircraft, out of Cocos Island, into Melbourne and Rockhampton. As one of the participants tritely described the following months and years of embryo selection, implant, success and failure, "I wouldn’t have missed it CONTINUED ON PAGE 27

for quids, and there were plenty of them! There were enough successes to establish the Boran and Tuli breeds and even more importantly, for us, this event opened the door for the first importation of Bonsmaras in a joint venture organised by Swin Hudson, between Tremere Pastoral and Arthur de Villiers and Son, one of the leading Bonsmara breeders in

South Africa. The ambition has been completed. The surrogate dams commenced calving – Then another disaster! Pestivirus. A disease, which has not been a major problem in calving cattle in Central Qld previously, spread through many herds and many breeds. Calves premature through to full term twins were still born. It was totally unexpected and prompted

the development of a vaccine which we have today; but it reduced our numbers dramatically. The survivors were gratefully received and so the Bonsmara breed had arrived from Africa. More embryos entered from the USA, and the gene pool expanded. It was a final success which none of us would have missed for quids.

FROM PAGE 26

ABOUT BONSMARA CATTLE The Bonsmara Cattle Breed evolved in the 1930's from extensive comparison projects at Mara Research Station in South Africa.

Bonsmara becoming the most popular beef cattle breed in South Africa today.

An initiative of the Department of Agriculture, the aim was to develop a stabilised breed that could adapt and produce efficiantly in the hot savannah areas of South Africa. Under the direction of Professor Jan Bonsma breeds trialed in the projects included: Africander, Hereford, Shorthorn, Sussex, Angus and Red Poll. These research projects commenced in 1937, resulting in findings that the optimal combination for efficiency and production was 5/8 Africander, 3/8 Exotic. With the outcome being an animal that was 5/8 Africander, 3/16 Hereford and 3/16 Shorthorn. Wanting to assess the breeds performance under broader commercial conditions the Department of Agriculture set up a bull loan scheme in 1951, which allowed greater access to the breed for South African cattleman. Resulting in the Bonsmara becoming the most popular beef cattle breed in South Africa today.

DID YOU KNOW... ■ Bonsmara are a tropically adapted Bos taurus breed. Performance recording is the cornerstone of their development. ■ They are the dominant breed in South Africa, where some 60,000 registered females are currently being performance recorded with the commercial and seedstock herds, adding to around 4 million head. ■ Some 400 Bonsmara embryos were first imported into Australia in 1998 from the Republic of South Africa, followed by semen from the USA. ■ The Bonsmara Cattle Breeders Society of Australia (BCBS of A) was formed in 2000, and there are now over 3000 Bonsmara infused cattle in the country.

Bonsmara are medium framed, smooth coated cattle. Coat colour can range from deep red to light brown. Like the Belmont the Bonsmara Bulls exhibit a small hump forward of the shoulder with a neat underline. Bonsmara embryos were imported into Australia in the 1980's and the breed continues to develop under Australian conditions

BRAFORD WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

â??

2012 proudly marked the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Braford Society Page 28

Brafords are a real Australian success story First developed in 1946 when Brahman genetics were introduced into a Hereford herd in Central Queensland to combat the staggering losses caused by cattle tick and eye cancer. In 1962 a group of visionary cattlemen met in Rockhampton with the intention of forming an organisation to represent Braford cattle breeders. The Australian Braford Society was formed and has continued to prosper in Australia and worldwide. 2012 proudly marked the 50th Anniversary of the

Australian Braford Society. It was a time to reflect and thank the pioneers of our breed for their determination and dedication and also a time to look forward, set goals and expand. Brafords are bred to withstand the harshest seasons while remaining fertile and functional. Backed by feed efficiency data and meat quality awards, the modern Braford has a great deal to be proud of and the ability to enhance any straight or crossbreeding program.

TESTIMONIALS

"They consistently earn a 20 per cent price premium above ordinary Japanese ox grades and usually do this as milk or two-tooths. We would not change from the breed while we can get the high-quality Brafords." Radke Family, McEuen, Queensland The McConachy’s Braford based herd has continually proven itself against other breeds in terms of handling tough conditions and producing progeny that turn-off early. "We have no plans to make major changes to our breeding herd – the Brahman/Braford-cross has worked well for us for many years, so we are happy to keep using them." Bob McConachy, Cloncurry, Queensland The journey of life’s experiences has taught Kevin Esmond the value of cattle that perform consistently well and return a good profit edge, so it’s no surprise he’s a Braford fan through and through. "I was a great Hereford man when I took over from Dad, but now find that we get more weight and a better article by crossing back and forth with Brahman cows and Braford bulls, then putting Brahmans back over the female progeny."

Ray Kidd, St George,Queensland "Our Braford females are the core of our beef business. Using Red Angus bulls over our Braford females have given us heavier weaners, with great body shape that are highly sort after in the local markets. The Brafords work our steeper country better than other breeds allowing more cattle to run on our property. Russell and Helen Whiteman looked for a breed of cattle that would withstand tougher conditions but still finish well for their target EU market. They believe Braford cattle have just the right amount of Bos Indicus genetics to easily handle tough season but still enough British blood to be welcomed by the meatworks. "We find the Braford-cross cattle are well liked by the meatworks. We aren’t too scientific about the way we breed – we just try to keep a Braford base." Russell Whiteman, Rolleston, Queensland

Do Braford Bulls make good terminal sires for crossbreeding programs? Yes and we encourage these programs. Are Braford cattle suited to all Australian climates and conditions? We have members in all States of Australia and hoping to have some new members from New Zealand. Braford cattle have proved over the years they are adaptable to all climates from the heat in the Western Queensland and Central Northern Territory to the cold in southern New South Wales and Victoria. These cattle can live and not only that but thrive in almost any climate. Do pure breed and cross breed steers and heifers finish well on grass and grain feeding? Given the right conditions Braford cattle will finish well on grass alone. They also have proven time and time again in feedlot competitions that they finish extremely well on grain. Are Braford cattle polled / horned or both? Braford cattle are both. Are there any restrictions on the use of AI and ET work and programs in the breed? All AI and ET programs must be approved by Management and the current owners of the donor cattle. However we do encourage these programs. Are there any restrictions on the amount of Brahman and Hereford content in the breed? Braham inheritance in the Braford cattle to be evident in their appearance, indicative of ¼ – ¾ Brahman Characteristics.

DID YOU KNOW? Braford Cattle adapt well to all climates, with Braford cattle in all states of Australia flourishing in all temperatures and returning above average results. They display excellent mothering ability and fertility with above average calf drops. Exceptional longevity with some bulls reported to work until 10-12 years of age and females 12-13 years of age with good strong calves as common features of the breed. A feature of the cattle is good hooded eyes and strong colour. Brafords excel in crossbreeding, weight for age and daily weight gain through exceptional feed conversion in all situations that is grass fed, grain assisted and feedlot operations.

BRAHMAN Brahman seed stock is in unparalleled demand.

BRAHMAN REVOLUTION Brahman bloodlines can be found in more than half the national herd. OVER the last 100 years, Brahman cattle have been bred to suit Northern Australia conditions. It has been said that the growth and development of Brahman cattle in Australia has been the greatest livestock revolution in history. From an initial importation in 1933 of just 18 head from the United States, Brahman bloodlines can today be found in more than half the national herd. In Queensland, over 75 per cent of the herd contains Brahman genetics, with 100,000-plus Brahman bulls working north of the Tropic of Capricorn alone. This reliance on the breed across Northern Australia is what

underpins the unparalleled demand for Brahman seed stock and has cemented the annual three-day Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale as the largest single beef breed sale in the world. Brahman cattle play a major role in the supply chain of domestic and premium beef export markets such as Japan and the European Union. They are also the breed of choice for live export to feed lots across South East Asia. Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association Limited (ABBA) has a positive outlook on the future of rural Australia and is committed to its growth and sustainability, while maintaining a deep commitment to the welfare of our animals.

PADDOCK TO PLATE ALONG with our sponsors, the Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association Limited (ABBA) would like to take this opportunity to share our story of the great care our industry takes in the selection, breeding, welfare and husbandry of Brahman cattle from paddock to plate to the wider community. ABBA has a great story to tell. Established in 1946, we have played a major role in the development and continued success of the beef breed in Australia. ABBA has a strong membership base of 1000 active stud members recording between 20,000 – 25,000 animals annually. Brahman Australia regularly contribute to the well being and development of the Australian community. We do this by holding fund-raising events including charity auctions, sale donations for many years, and participating in the variety challenge – this year under the guise of the “Hump Express”. The Hudgins Scholarship THE Hudgins Scholarship was developed to educate, train and empower our young men and women within the beef sector. This scholarship provides a funded trip to America where participants gain varied industry knowledge and experience in activities under the guidance of their host families. Brahman Australia is proud of its major achievements in the wider agricultural sector, last financial year raising in excess of $70,000 for rural Australia and its people.

BENEFITS OF BRANGUS They’re renowned for excellent fertility, adaptability and profitability

Brangus cattle excel in all drivers of profitability.

BRANGUS cattle have been making a name for themselves in Australia for more than 50 years. They are bred on commercially applicable criteria – no fads, no frills. Brangus cattle excel in all drivers of profitability. Being naturally polled Brangus eliminate the requirement to dehorn calves. The cowherd is easier to handle and hide damage is minimised. IN ADDITION to their fertility and adaptability, the benefits of Australian Brangus cattle include a unique resilience. Heat and parasite tolerance, and the ability to walk and forage, gives Brangus cattle the ability to handle the toughest grazing conditions. Australian Brangus can be bred with varying Bos Indicus content so breeders from Tasmania to the Queensland gulf country can confidently select a Brangus for their conditions. The marbling and tenderness qualities of the Angus breed are present in the Brangus carcase. The powerful combination with excellent growth rates affords producer’s turnoff versatility with their calf drop. Brangus has proved to be a force to be reckoned with in carcase and prime cattle competitions Australia-wide, where their high-yielding carcases with minimum fat and maximum quality have consistently produced awards.

CROSSBREEDING HERD Brangus cows are well-known for their calving abilities and high fertility

Where the other breeds’ calving percentages decreased, the Brangus cows calved every year without fail... — Bob Summerville, Glenbrook Charleville.

AUSTRALIAN Brangus have the flexibility to be used as a maternal base, a terminal sire line or as a pure self-replacing herd. However you choose to incorporate Brangus genetics into your program, the attributes of the breed will ensure your are taking a step in the right direction. Brangus females are well-known for their mothering ability. Excellent temperaments, calving ease and high fertility ensure that Brangus females are sought-after by progressive cattle breeders. Many breeders are using terminal European sires over their Brangus female herd. These calves have the best of both worlds, with the increased muscle pattern and growth from the sire. Bob Summerville from Glenbrook, Charleville, said he was amazed at how easily the Brangus cows adapted to the mulga country when they moved from the Brisbane Valley to Charleville. “The decider came when drought hit,” Mr Summerville said. “Where the other breeds’ calving percentages decreased, the Brangus cows calved every year without fail, producing strong-boned and well-muscled calves. ”They also proved to be good walkers in the paddocks – a necessity here where the distances between waters are substantial,” he said.

BRANGUS Brangus bulls have a strong name in Australia.

BEEFING UP WITH SIRES Brangus bulls will produce above-average weight advantage in calves

... we achieved a 15 per cent weight advantage at weaning. — John Searle.

THERE ARE many advantages in crossbreeding with Brangus sires, no matter what breed of female you have. Brangus bulls are renowned for producing light birth-weight calves, and the calving ease advantage of the breed means you can use Brangus bulls over heifers with confidence. F1 heifers, sired by Brangus bulls, carry high maternal value, fertility, milking ability and hybrid vigour, and are valuable heifer replacements to retain in your program. Brangus bulls sire carcasses of high quality that will finish extremely well at any age for your targeted market –be it grain crop or grass fed. Brangus steers are noted for their high quality

carcase which has been proven by many successes achieved in carcase competitions and feed back trials all over Australia. John and Jo Searle from West Point Gulargambone, NSW, crossed a Brangus bull over their Hereford herd they had developed over twenty years. “By using Brangus bulls over our Hereford cows, we achieved a 15 per cent weight advantage at weaning,” Mr Searle said. “All the Brangus-sired “Super Baldies” have excellent eye pigmentation and superb temperament,” he said.

SELF-REPLACING HERD Australian Brangus breed is both hardy and perfect for self-breeding

It’s pretty rough country, but with Brangus, no problems

IN addition to being excellent cross-breeders, the unique abilities of Brangus cattle allow them to handle a vast range of environments and perform successfully as a purebred herd. A self-replacing Brangus herd gives producers an economic edge, with replacement heifer calves as valuable as their steer mates. The advantages of a self-replacing herd with no need for “heifer” bulls or purchasing replacement heifers should not be understated. John Graham, of Withersfield Pastoral Company in Emerald, said his purebred Brangus cows were hardy animals. “We’ve been running purebred Brangus cows on Withersfield since 1973,” Mr Graham said. “It’s pretty rough country, but with Brangus, no problems. “They’re hardy animals, good calvers, great mothers and produce a top line of store steers,” he said. Breeding up to Brangus BRANGUS cattle can only be bred from the Angus and Brahman breeds of cattle. The association allows the level of Bos Indicus blood in Brangus to vary to suit breeders’ different environmental requirements. Brahman blood percentage is required to be within

Brangus cattle can handle a range of environments. 25–75% for all registration levels, with the exception of the commercial and enrolment levels. The levels that cattle can be recorded at are: • Commercial • Enrolment • Foundation • Registered

Page 44

AS a breed society we could suggest Charbray cattle entered the world as the answer to every cattleman’s prayer, but as every cattleman knows, no breed originated flawlessly. It has taken hard work, determination and above all, a clear vision, for Charbrays to reach their current position as leaders in consistency as well as performance. Dedicated Charbray seedstock producers and their commercial breeding counterparts have witnessed the breed go from strength to strength in the last decade and agree a complimentary breeding plan was the key turning point. Since its official launch at Beef Week 2009, the breeding plan has offered a direction for Charbray breeders to improve the quality and consistency of their product. Inconsistencies stemming from reliance on rotational terminal sire breeding using both parent breeds was recognised and denounced. A dedicated team worked to create a pathway forward for the breed, and the rest you could say, is history. Charbrays have undeniably been leading the field in the selling and show rings with buyers and judges alike recognising the breed’s new found market suitability. Bull buyers will happily tell you a walk down a saleyard lane now leaves them scratching their heads at which Charbray stood out as the best. The same goes for competition judges who often can be quoted describing the closeness between Charbray entries. With quality and consistency now front and centre, the possibilities for success with Charbrays are limitless and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The Charbray National Sale is celebrating its 40th

year in 2017 and is sure to offer recognised Charbray pedigrees that have emerged to drive the breed forward. In such a milestone year, Charbray breeders will come together to look back on 40 years of development and share in the pride that comes from meeting expectation and delivering on promises. Those promises based on measurable results are the backbone to the highly sought after progeny making their way into producers’ paddocks today. Demand for outstanding Charbray pedigrees is expected to surge again at this year’s national sale with international enquiries already cropping up throughout the seedstock selling group. Commercial and stud Charbray operators alike will attest to putting solid runs on the board in recent years with confidence building for a knock-out 2017 selling season. Bulls at the 2016 Charbray National Sale averaged $6597/head with top sires now consistently commanding a healthy price tag- a huge achievement for the breed. High prices are undoubtedly linked to high quality and the Charbray breed’s comprehensive successes can only flow back to producers in their efforts to deliver a superior product. It is fair to say Charbrays are receiving a premium across all markets, be it within the saleyards, direct feedlot trades or in the stud sector. Those that have stuck with the breed are now reveling in the success they saw from afar while those who didn’t find favourable results early on are beginning to return to Charbrays with a new sense of purpose. Now is the time to rejuvenate your Charbray herd and reap the rewards on offer. We’ve got the formula just right.

THE Charbray is the versatile beef breed combining the hardiness and tick resistance of the Brahman with the lean beef characteristics and docile temperament of the Charolais. Low Birth Weights = No calving problems Charbray-sired calves are small at birth, however, they maximise hybrid vigour with rapid post-birth growth and have outstanding feed-converting ability and weaning weights. Top performance = increased returns Whether fed on grain or grass, Charbrays perform with top feed conversion rates, excellent weight gain and an ideal carcase. Charbrays return premium prices whether sold as weaners, stores or finished cattle, and are in great demand from feedlotters, processors and for the live cattle trade. Fertility The Charbray female has the ability to get in calf under stress conditions while still rearing a calf with high carcase quality. Flexible Breeding Plan The Charbray breeding is flexible and modern. The (Brahman) bos indicus content can be increased to cope with a harsher environment or similarly, reduced in softer environments. The Regulations of the Society allow breeders to introduce either the Brahman or Charolais breed at any stage of the breeding program to refresh the desired attributes of that respective breed.

CHAROLAIS

THE CHAROLAIS EDGE Charolais are one of the most important beef breeds in Australia today

BOOST YOUR PROFITS: Charolais cattle are considered one of the most reliable breeds for cost-effective beef production. Boost Your Profits Recognised worldwide for their valuable contribution to beef industry profitability, progressive commercial cattle breeders across Australia have picked up the Charolais advantage. Charolais are one of the most important beef breeds in Australia today, famous for their ability to add profit to beef production. Charolais have easily adapted to all environments throughout the country, with the breed now considered one of the most reliable for cost-effective beef production. Charolais are renowned for their ability to grow fast, and produce consistent, high value carcases. Increase your profitability We all understand beef production is a business: Reducing

overheads, reducing cost of production and increasing turnover all have a part to play in growing overall farm profitability. Charolais genetics can significantly increase total calf weight kilograms, and in so doing, increase profitability. Charolais are renowned as a placid breed, docile and easy to manage, so important in the production of growing high quality beef. Unsurpassed hybrid vigour The introduction of the Charolais breed to the Australian beef industry is a cross breeding success story. The most significant reason to crossbreed is to take advantage of the natural phenomenon known as Heterosis, or Hybrid Vigour. By incorporating Charolais genetics into your breeding program you can significantly benefit from the traits and characteristics this high performance breed can add to your herd.

Fertile breeders Big, active, performance recorded Charolais bulls are also known for their soundness and ability to get the job done, to get cows in calf yearly.

CHAROLAIS

Cut Above the Rest Charolais are a force to be reckoned with in the commercial market place. In 2008, over $8 million worth of Charolais bulls were sold at public auctions around the country, demonstrating the importance and relevance of this great breed of cattle. With demand outstripping supply, Charolais sired calves are continually commanding top prices in the saleyards. Many progressive commercial cattlemen using Charolais genetics are selling the progeny directly to feedlotters and processors, who understand the value of their growth and yield attributes. Consistent carcases time and again The Charolais ability to sire consistent carcasses is well known, and proven time and time again. Many in the processing and retailing sectors regard the quality and consistency of Charolais as the breed’s advantage, marking them as a preferred article, always in demand. With the Charolais carcases showing as much as a $200 advantage, it’s easy to see why. Meat quality consumers appreciate Beef production is about producing a meal and keeping customers coming back for more. With a quality eating experience assessed by such factors as ‘juiciness, tenderness and flavour’ it’s important that animals have the genetic propensity to provide meat quality. Breeding for Results Prime lamb breeders do it, pig breeders do it, poultry breeders do it: they all take advantage of hybrid vigour and the money it makes them. Commercial beef breeders are taking advantage of this “free lunch” by switching to Charolais. Faster growth rates Charolais are one of the fastest growing beef breeds in the world and are renowned for achieving desired weights, quickly. This superior growth allows growers, feedlotters and finishers to meet targets sooner, saving

CHAROLAIS PROVEN TO IMPRESS Breeders and farmers agree when it comes to the Charolais breed and the undeniable benefits the stock offers their operations. “Charolais infused cattle are ideally suited to most premium short fed markets that the Australian feedlot sector supplies. There is a very high demand for this type of cattle.” — James Maclean, Allied Beef, Toowoomba, Queensland “Charolais are the best terminal sires of the lot. They add that extra bit of yield and growth while also being a bit softer than most others. They’re a nicely conformed article – a good type of beast.” — Greg Upton, Walcha, New South Wales “The comments we receive are that the people who buy our cattle get the result they’re after inside 12 months. The Charolais-cross have great weight for age and produce a soft calf.” — Bill Stacy, Singleton, New South Wales

GREAT INVESTMENT: Breeders and farmers alike endorse the quality of Charolais cattle for their return.

DISSECTING THE DEVON

Taking a look at the go to breed for organic producers in the USA

â??

The biggest asset Devon cattle have to offer is fertility and we regularly have calving percentages between 96% and 98%.

DEVON cattle are the breed of choice for organic and grassfed beef producers in North America. The breed is experiencing a strong resurgence in popularity in several countries where consumers are paying premiums for the healthier eating benefits of grass fed meat. Calving Ease Devons have small vigorous calves which are usually born unassisted. Milking Ability Devon cows are renowned for high milk production resulting in heavy calves at weaning. Mothering Ability The Devon cow has excellent mothering ability which means calves have one of the highest survival rates to weaning.

Weight Gain, Maturity and Carcase Devons combine rapid weight gain as well as adequate muscle and carcase characteristics, with the ability to fatten at an early age. Feed Conversion Cattlemen have found Devon cattle generally to be extremely efficient converters of grass to beef and this is evidenced by their ability to withstand extremes of conditions better than any other British breed. Adaptability The Devon's robust constitution has enabled them to flourish in the diverse environments of Australia. In the Australian Devon-Hereford Crossbreeding trial it was proven that Devons not only excel on low nutrition but also grow as fast as Herefords on high nutrition.

Devons, in their pure form, have proved themselves meeting Meat Standards Australia (MSA) specifications with less than 1% failure rate compared to an industry average of 10%. Crossed with another breed they provide hybrid vigour and the value benefits of their MSA achievements.

DROUGHTMASTER The Droughtmaster has a proven track record.

PROVEN PERFORMERS Efficient, effective and economical performance during production The pioneer cattlemen who developed the Droughtmaster retained the most desirable performance traits from both Bos indicus and Bos taurus genetics. They developed a breed which could perform by consistently producing and reproducing despite parasites and adverse environments, while economically producing high yielding carcasses of quality beef. Performing well in harsh conditions is important, but performance in all links of the beef production chain is more important. The Droughtmaster is renowned for its performance in: Reproduction: Calving ease, high libido, fertility and adaptability all combine to give the Droughtmaster an outstanding reproductive performance. Growth: Excellent milking ability, digestive efficiency, low nutritional requirements, feed conversion efficiency, walking ability and foraging ability combine to make the Droughtmaster an outstanding performer. Consistently outgrowing most other breeds when nutrition is restricted, they perform as well as most breeds in feedlots or on high quality pasture. Page 52

Feed Efficiency: A low maintenance digestive system, unique to Bos Indicus derived breeds, contributes to the Droughtmaster's reputation for highly efficient feed conversion, which provides a large economic advantage. Pasture: Optimum growth under a range of variable conditions is major benefit offered by the Droughtmaster. From prime improved pasture in temperate regions, light native pasture in tropical right through to drought conditions which invariably plague many areas of Australia, the Droughtmaster is recognised as one of the leading performers. Asian Feedlots: Asian feedlots are an important and growing section of the global beef production chain. Access to high quality stock feed as well as climatic extremes are major challenges for them. An ability to handle the Asian heat and humidity, complemented by the efficient conversion of lower quality feed make the Droughtmaster a popular choice for the Asian feedlot buyers. Carcase: Well muscled carcases with optimum fat cover give Droughtmasters excellent dressing percentages and high saleable meat yields. Their outstanding docility keeps meat colour and pH at acceptable levels.

DROUGHTMASTER

CROSSBREEDING Providing major benefits without changing your breed completely In the temperate regions of Australia, traditionally the home of the British breeds, the low maintenance Droughtmaster breed is being used increasingly in crossbreeding programs to produce easy care productive cattle. They are also used in tropical areas to improve carcase qualities and performance. The progeny resulting from this crossbreeding, have a significant economic advantage through their inheritance of Droughtmaster traits. These include: Calving ease, adaptation, longevity, reduced eye problems, bloat resistance, mothering ability and milking ability. High growth sires can be used successfully over Droughtmaster females, due to generations of Droughtmaster breeders constantly selecting for: ■ Low Birth Weight ■ Calf Shape ■ Pelvic Structure The Droughtmaster bull passes on these dominant traits to his progeny in a crossbreeding program. Consequently, the F1 Droughtmaster female is renowned as a very efficient dam, and most effective when used with high growth sires. This combination fits the axiom 'cows for your country - bulls for your market'. With equal parts of Bos taurus and Bos indicus blood, the Droughtmaster provides the opportunity to crossbreed without causing a dramatic change to either the visual appearance (phenotype) or to the genotype of the progeny.

RECORD BREAKER: This record priced Droughtmaster bull, Glenlands Prince, sold for $180,000.

GELBVIEH

WHAT MAKES GELBVIEH UNIQUE

Uncovering the versatility of this popular and unique breed of beef

Some Gelbvieh cows grazing. GELBVIEH are a unique breed in the beef industry as they combine strong maternal traits with outstanding growth rates and excellent muscle development. Because of their quiet temperament and early maturing they are able to begin laying down fat at an early age. The result is an animal that reaches market weight younger, with optimum finish and tender, tasty meat. Gelbvieh cattle range in colour from a golden honey shade through to deep rich red and also black, which makes them ideal for crossing over most breeds to produce an even, solid colour which gives a uniform appearance in the paddock and the saleyards. Gelbvieh cattle are used in many crossbreeding programs around the world as they are a complementary cross over both British and Tropical breeds. They are the most used breed in the USA for composite breeding. Gelbvieh Traits Growth: Gelbvieh cows have a lower mature weight and are therefore more efficient than most other European breed females. They produce a lower birthweight calf which is born easily and Page 54

almost immediately starts to exhibit a tremendous growth pattern. When Gelbvieh bulls are used over British Breed females the resultant progeny can be expected to be at least 10% heavier at weaning age than straight bred calves out of the same females. Similar results could be expected when crossing with Bos Indicus females. The result is more money in the producers pocket for very little extra cost. Maternal: Most European breeds are used as terminal sires which results in all their progeny being sold for slaughter. Gelbvieh are strong in both growth and maternal traits so therefore they can be used as terminal sires or their heifer progeny can be retained as replacement females. Their puberty, fertility and milk production is also superior over other European cross females. This has been confirmed at extensive cross breeding trials such as Clay Centre, Nebraska, USA. Puberty: Gelbvieh have the earliest puberty of any beef breed, so under normal conditions Gelbvieh can be joined as early as 13 months to calve at 22 months - instead of at 24-30 months like most of the other larger breeds. This gives the first calf Gelbvieh heifer 15 months before she has to calve again as a 3 year old.

GELBVIEH The Gelbvieh is a proven award winner. Quiet Temperament: Gelbvieh have a quiet and inquisitive nature and display a docile temperament. Gelbvieh pass this quality on to their offspring. A quiet nature is being demanded by producers and processors and is required in workplace safety, bruising and the meat quality areas. Gelbvieh's excellent temperament makes them ideal for farmers who run a small number of cattle or in the small farm situation. Large herds are no different when it comes to temperament requirements, making Gelbvieh a preferred choice especially in crossbreeding programs. Carcase Quality: Studies carried out at the Clay Centre, Nebraska USA, confirmed that Gelbvieh had the largest ribeye muscle area per 100kg of all breeds, hence they have high cutout yields. Gelbvieh are a lean breed with a fast growth rate with the ability to fatten at a younger age. Given their marketability as yearlings, they are a source of high cutout yields. Both purebred and crossbred Gelbvieh cattle have demonstrated their excellent market suitability by winning beef carcase championship all around the country. This was confirmed at Beef 2009 in Rockhampton with a seven month old steer of Michele & Barry Fleming from Serpentine WA, which took out the National Beef Competition Champion Carcase Award. Fertility: Gelbvieh had the largest testicles of all breeds in the Clay Centre research and testicular size is related to the fertility of their daughters. Taking into account the breeds early puberty this could explain why the females are most fertile and even precocious. Milking Ability: Originally Gelbvieh were bred for milk production as well as beef, they have sound, compact udders with smallish well placed teats. The exceptional milking ability of the Gelbvieh

compliments the growth trait of the breed and results in a young sappy calf that reaches weaning age at a suitable marketing weight. When used in a crossbreeding program the addition of the influence of hybrid vigour adds further to the profitability. Weaning Weight: Gelbvieh produced the highest weaning weight per cow exposed to breeding at Clay Centre, which reflects their good performance in fertility, milk and growth. Weaning weights of the progeny can regularly be around 60% of the cows body weight. Yearling weights are more than adequate for joining replacement heifers to calve as two-year-olds and the early puberty and high fertility of the breed results in high conception rates. Heat Tolerance and Tick Resistance: The South African Gelbvieh Association has reported a distinct tolerance to both heat and ticks and there have been confirmatory reports from Queensland. Gelbvieh bulls stand in the sun quite contentedly while British and most other European breeds seek the shade. Gelbvieh have a short coat and smooth skin which aids in heat tolerance and tick control. These very important features of Gelbvieh will be further researched in Queensland. The Balancer Breed: Gelbvieh cattle crossed with Angus (red & black) produce a 'balancer'. Balancers utilise the advantages of hybrid vigour and increased production to produce high growth and well muscled progeny with added fat cover and easy calving traits. Balancers can be either red or black and are equally suited to grass finishing or sought after by feedlot operators where they can be short fed for local trade or grown out to heavier weights.

TOP DOLLAR CATTLE IS RIGHT FOR EVERY FARM Hereford cattle is the supreme choice for increased financial income

Hereford cattle constantly outperform their British counterparts, and can adapt to all conditions.

The Hereford breed is the ideal choice for commercial cattle breeders looking to reduce their production costs and increase their financial income. Page 56

Hereford cattle, distinguished by a white face and a red, brown body, were first developed in Herefordshire in the United Kingdom and have since spread throughout the world with strong populations in south and north America, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe and Australia where it is the nation’s second most numerous breed in the temperate zone. Herefords consistently out perform their British breed counterparts across a range of traits, providing long-term viability and sustainability for modern day beef operations. Efficiency The Hereford breed is the ideal choice for commercial cattle breeders looking to reduce their production costs and increase their financial income. As Australia’s most feed efficient British breed, Hereford cattle have the genetic potential to improve your herd’s feed intake and utilisation to reshape your profitability and sustainability. Profitability Hereford cattle lead the profit race for $-per-head profit. Consistently Hereford and Hereford cross cattle sell for top dollar at saleyards throughout Australia. Docility

The temperament, or docility, of the Hereford breed will impact positively on your herd’s growth rates, fertility, carcase, meat quality, stress levels and manageability. Cattle with slow flight times, i.e. good temperament: • grow faster to final weights • have heavier carcases • have better feed conversion ratios Fertility The Hereford breed’s high fertility rates enable producers to maintain and even increase herd numbers throughout any seasonal condition. Females are reliable breeders, producing and weaning a calf annually, not just in the good years. Adaptability No matter the location, Herefords easily adapt to varying climates, environments and management systems. ■ Continued Page 58

Hereford constantly has a high fertility and produces healthy calves

With an infusion of Herefords renowned maternal traits you will improve fertility producing healthier animals with higher weaning weights and greater weight gain.

THE benefits of crossbreeding with Herefords are well known, comprehensively tested and highly regarded. Trials conducted in Australia by NSW Agriculture and the Beef CRC have clearly documented the advantages. Introducing Hereford genetics into your Bos indicus herd will allow you to profit from these advantages without sacrificing the environmental adaption of your female herd. The scientific outcomes from these trials prove that crossbreeding hybrid vigour, especially between the genetic diversity of Bos indicus and the Bos taurus animals, results in progeny that will out-perform the average performance of both parent breeds. So what is it about Herefords that creates the perfect Bos indicus complement for your crossbreeding program? • Superior MSA compliance: steers from the first and second cohorts of Herefords Australia’s Progeny Test Project averaged 62.4 on the new MSA index against an industry average MSA Index for 2014 of 57.28. • Adaptability: Herefords are famed the world over for their ability to adapt to any environment; they are survivors, an important trait in any harsh environment. • High Fertility: consistently producing healthy calves from each joining equates to more $’s annually. • Unmatched docility: the docile temperament of Herefords is legendary; less stress makes for easier management and improved meat quality. • Exceptional maternal traits: with an infusion of Herefords renowned maternal traits you will improve

HEREFORD CRISS-CROSS: The backcross with a Hereford will meet market specifications.

CRISS-CROSS IS THE WAY Two-breed rotation with the Hereford cattle is a very popular method

A two breed rotation, or criss-cross, is the way to go for many producers.

Research conducted by NSW Agriculture compared Bos indicus and Bos taurus straightbreds and crosses for a number of indicators. Herefords were used to represent Bos taurus breeds and Brahmans the Bos indicus breeds. A two breed rotation, or criss-cross, is the way to go for many producers. It is a continuous system alternatively using bulls of two different breeds with each sire mated to the daughters of the other breed. The backcross with a Hereford bull is especially popular to meet market specifications, including MSA

compliance. When weaning rate and weaning weight were combined, the first cross BxH cows had the highest total production but the HxBH cows also performed extremely strongly. MINIATURE HEREFORDS MINI: Miniature Herefords look just like smaller versions of traditional Herefords with rich red coats, and white face, belly and markings.

MINIATURE HEREFORDS The breed may be small in stature but they have some big potential

â??

Quite simply the animal is a Hereford first by breed and a miniature second by size.

Page 66

THERE is a lot of misunderstanding being perpetrated regarding the classification of Miniature Herefords, making them out to be a separate breed, which they are not. It is also causing unnecessary confusion among new owners and potential breeders. Quite simply the animal is a Hereford first by breed and a miniature second by size. A look at some of the terminology which has been used incorrectly will show this. Firstly, there is no such thing as a "purebred" Miniature Hereford. The description should be "full blood Hereford" without any reference to the miniature size.

A full blood animal is one which has no other breed in its background going back many generations. In the case of Herefords this goes back several hundred years. A Hereford bred to another Hereford, regardless of size is still a full blood Hereford. The only differentiations which can be made with Herefords are whether they are horned or polled or of different sizes e.g. standard, classic or miniature but those are just varieties of the same breed. "Purebred" is the result of successive back breeding from original crossbreeding or interbreeding and this applies to using two or more entirely separate breeds.

MINIATURE HEREFORDS GETTING TO KNOW EACHOTHER: A Miniature Hereford cow and calf.

ORIGINS OF THE BREED Miniature Herefords owe their heritage to the dedicated Largent family

Beginning with five cows and one bull, the Largents began a major breeding experiment.

MINIATURE Herefords first arrived in Australia in 1997. There was one live shipment and quite a few other breeders imported semen and embryos. Miniature Herefords today owe their existence to one stubborn family, the Largents. Beginning with five cows and one bull, the Largents began a major breeding experiment. Of difficulties and discouragement, there were plenty. But in 1981 the first true Miniature Hereford bull was born. His name was LS REAL MT 3 (Herd ID# 0015) and he is present in the genealogy of almost every Miniature Hereford alive today.

The national herd has been slowly building ever since. Some Australian breeders have been using Australian genetics mixed with the Largent heritage to introduce Australian. Miniature Herefords and also poll Miniature Herefords. The Largents have also continued to diversify their genetics and have also introduced poll Miniature Herefords. The Largent family owns a significant Miniature Hereford herd in the United States and are generally considered the founders of the breed. The Largent heritage still continues in Australia.

LIMOUSIN

MUSCLE UP WITH LIMOUSIN CATTLE Bred for their high quality cuts of meet, the breed make for a superior herd LIMOUSIN cattle are a high muscled breed and are a source of superior quality meat. There a number of reasons why Limousin are a quality and efficient breed to run. For one, they produce high value cuts of meat. A Limousin cross calf is expected to have about 9.5% more silverside, 9.5% more eye muscle area an4% more retail beef yield, with a 3% increase in tenderness of the loin muscle and 5.5% more tender silverside. They can yield high quantities at one time. Crossbreeding with Limousin provides increased weight gain, improved feed efficiency and large increases in retail beef yield and tenderness without the need for Hormone Growth Promotants. They also require no extra feed so are cost effective to run. Crossbreeding provides gains of 4 to 6% in weight through hybrid vigour and within breed selection can achieve ongoing increases in weight gain. Increasing the rate of weight gain increases feed efficiency. The Limousin breed originated in a region of central GREAT COAT: Limousin cattle come in a variety of colours. France – rugged, granite country – where the summers are hot and winters are severe. The documented history of Limousin goes back more than 15,000 years to to an area surrounding the French city of Limoges where rough cave paintings showing the characteristics of the breed have been discovered and carbon dated. The Limousin herd book was established in 1886. Today the Limousin breed can be found in seventy countries from the northern-most herds of Finland and the Commonwealth of Soviet States to countries such as Cuba, South Africa and China. The Limousin breed is: ■ the largest breed in the UK ■ the third largest breed in the USA ■ the fifth largest breed in Canada ■ the seventh largest breed in Australia

A Limousin cross calf is expected to have about 9.5% more silverside, 9.5% more eye muscle area an4% more retail beef yield, with a 3% increase in tenderness of the loin muscle and 5.5% more tender silverside. Page 68

DEPENDABLE: Limousin cattle adapt to diverse climates and the widest range of management systems.

LIMOUSIN DIVERSE: The Limousin is a rich gold colour, with lighter circles around the eye and the muzzle, and shading to a lighter colour on the legs.

THE LIMOUSIN DIFFERENCE What makes the sturdy and efficient breed stand out from the crowd

Limousin cattle adapt to diverse climates and the widest range of management systems.

THE Limousin is a rich gold colour, with lighter circles around the eye and the muzzle, and shading to a lighter colour on the legs. Limousins can also be black as a result of grading up from black cattle in Australia. The head is small and short with a broad forehead, and the neck is short. Limousin can be horned or polled. Most horned Limousins are dehorned at a young age. The Limousin is intermediate in size and maturity between British and most other European breeds. Limousin cattle adapt to diverse climates and the widest range of management systems, from the top end of the Northern Territory to the highlands of Central

Tasmania. Limousin calves have low birth weights, which lead to minimum calving problems when Limousin bulls are used over cows of other breeds. Limousin crossbred steers and heifers have high dressing percentages of 58 – 63 percent compared to an average of 53 – 58 percent. High meat to bone ratios and low fat leads to outstanding yields of saleable meat from Limousin cross carcases. Yields of up to 80% of saleable meat are not uncommon. Limousin meat is finely textured, tender and low in saturated fats and cholesterol. It is genetically trimmed.

LOWLINE

PURE BRED BEEF

Lowline are compact beef cattle with a big future

AUSTRALIAN Lowline Cattle are bred pure from Aberdeen Angus genetics originating from Scotland and Canada, developed in Australia to suit sustainable and lifestyle properties. Only the Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA) has registered cattle that are DNA-typed and parent-verified to prove the cattle are true Australian Lowlines. ■ Lowline cattle are versatile – ideal for commercial farming, schools, students, families and lifestyle farmers ■ Lowline Cattle have compact frames, approximately 60 percent of the size of larger breeds, with excellent feed efficiency ■ Improve viability – you can run more animals per hectare and thus make more profit per hectare ■ More effective and efficient use of smaller farms ■ Environmentally friendly – Lowline Cattle have a low impact on paddocks and fences ■ Lowlines are naturally polled, have great temperaments and are easy to manage ■ Low birth-weight calves for easy calving in heifers and cows of any breed ■ Early maturing – steers have the ability to finish on grass from 14-months old. Grow your own beef •Beef is an important source of protein, vitamins, minerals and amino acids, especially iron, B12, niacin and zinc •Growing your own beef is a cost-effective way to feed your family a healthy diet •Lowline Steers are ideal for smaller acreage farms and are easier to manage, lower maintenance than other breeds and are feed efficient •Lowline beef is well-marbled, tender and flavoursome with a beautiful texture •Lowlines have moderate-framed carcases – perfect for the freezer Certified Lowline Beef is an opportunity for ALCA members to establish a farm business to sell their beef. Using a Lowline bull in your cross-breeding program •Dynamic hybrid vigour •Moderate herd frame-size for feed efficiency while maintaining muscle and enhancing beef quality •Predictability and quality – calves are uniform in size and grow quickly (genetic dependability) •Lowline cross steers and heifers will finish on grass and are quicker than other breeds in a grain-fed operation •Steers have minimal wastage and less bone – more kilos of beef per acre means more profit •Higher intramuscular fat results in flavour, tenderness and fine-textured beef benefits of Australian Sarah Falkenhagen, 7, from Carneys Creek, with miniature cows that her family will Lowline Cattle be showing at the EKKA. LOWLINE

STUCTURALLY SOUND: The Lowline bulls are proving their longevity on Coonong.

GRAND FUTURE AHEAD

Lowline bulls are here to stay at Coonong Station, New South Wales

â??

Structurally good bulls will have a long life and the Lowline bulls are proving their longevity.

COONONG Station, a large NSW Riverina sheep and beef farming operation of 27,000 hectares between Urana and Jerilderie, purchased their first Lowline bulls in 2007. They had calving troubles with their Hereford heifers and had tried using bulls from other breeds over the years but were still pulling calves or losing heifers calving. It was suggested by another beef producer that they try using Lowline bulls so they purchased three two-year-old bulls from Elandra Park and Wanamara studs. Coonong Station is vast so the bulls work in large paddocks and sometimes harsh conditions. It goes to show that structurally good bulls will have a long

working life and the Lowline bulls are proving their longevity. Sophie Holt, Coonong Station, maintains the use of Lowline bulls for a heifer’s first calf is a sensible option. By getting 100 per cent of live calves and having 100 per cent to wean is the best outcome for any producer. Sophie said she likes that all the calves are consistent of type no matter what bulls are used. They are quick growing, black baldy calves that are weaned at six months old, around 200kg, and sold as grass-finished yearlings , preferably over the hooks, fetching good prices. Last season, Sophie said they had joined the Lowline bulls with some of their older Hereford cows and all the cows were in calf.

MURRAY GREY

BENEFITS BREEDING THE MURRAY GREY

A versatile and easy-going breed that can thrive in any environment

TOP CLASS: The Murray Grey’s light coat is wonderful in the hot Australian conditions.

â??

Murray Greys are an Australian breed bred for Australian conditions. Murray Greys thrive in any environment and have the ability to finish well on grain or grass Page 72

MURRAY Greys are renowned as an easy doing versatile breed that can thrive in any environment. Beef producers are choosing to use Murray Greys in their production systems for these reasons and many more. Calving ease: Murray Greys are renowned for their ease of calving. Coat colour: Light coated Murray Greys are more suited to hot environments, where studies have shown that under hot climatic conditions, dark coated animals absorb more heat than light coated animals and it alters the metabolic heat production of the animal. Temperament: Murray Greys are quiet, easily handled cattle. They readily adapt to new environments and settle well. Market acceptance: Murray Greys are readily accepted by all areas of the market and carry a sound and well deserved reputation.

Dressing and yield: Abattoirs, butchers and carcass competition results all point towards Murray Greys having exceptional dressing percentages and even more remarkable yields of sale-able beef. Finishing: Many breeds have extreme difficulty finishing within certain weight ranges, but Murray Greys can be brought to prime level at any range. Meat quality: Murray Greys are proven for marbling and tenderness. Versatility: Murray Greys are an Australian breed bred for Australian conditions. Murray Greys thrive in any environment and have the ability to finish well on grain or grass. Mothering ability: Murray Greys make great mothers and their ability to produce milk is second to none.

MURRAY GREY GREYMAN BEEF: A fantastic breed, bred for the Australian hot climates.

GREYMAN BEEF CATTLE Murray Grey cattle are an Australian breed suited for our conditions

blood to suit softer, southern pastures. Cross-breeding with Murray Grey cattle has long been on the horizons of many a cattle producer due to the advantages of heterosis or hybrid vigour, whereby the progeny of the cross-bred parents offer superiority in performance. Murray Greys are used Australia-wide in cross-breeding programs over European, Bos Indicus and other British breeds of cattle. Murray Grey cattle worldwide are increasingly chosen to be used in cross-breeding programs because they reduce calving problems, have improved temperament, widen the range of marketing options, are adaptable, increase yield and improve meat quality and milk ability.

Origin – Fast Facts • The Murray Grey breed was developed in the upper Murray River region of Australia in the early part of this century. • The first grey cattle resulted from the mating of an Angus bull and a roan Shorthorn cow. It was found that two or three crosses of the greys produced a very high percentage of grey cattle, combining features of the Beef Shorthorn and Angus breeds. • Commercial cattlemen became interested in the breed’s rapid growth and high carcase yield, and several developed grey herds.

The breed was the result of combining the genetic characteristics of both the Murray Grey and Brahman breeds

Developed in Queensland in the 1970s, specifically to suit the Queensland environment, the Greyman breed was the result of combining the outstanding genetic characteristics of both the Murray Grey and Brahman breeds. Greyman cattle carry between 25%and 75% of Murray Grey blood, with the remainder made up of Brahman. This allows breeders the option of being able to tailor-make genetic blends, selected for optimal performance specific to the region and environmental conditions. More simply, Greymans can be bred with a greater emphasis on Brahman content in the north or in tick country, or with a higher percentage of Murray Grey

RED ANGUS

ADVANTAGES OF RED ANGUS CATTLE

Breed are excellent for temperament, maternal qualities and carcase

RED ANGUS: A number of great benefits can be had from having Red Angus cattle.

â??

Having red-coated calves is an advantage when selling through saleyards. Page 74

RED Angus cattle have all the attributes of Angus with the addition of the homozygous red coat colour. Red Angus cattle excel for temperament, maternal qualities and carcass characteristics. Red Angus and their crosses are keenly sought after by commercial producers as a cornerstone for their production system. Red Angus has the ability to adapt to a vast range of the climatic conditions to be encountered across Australia. Red Angus, when crossed with other red breeds, will produce red-coated calves, which is an advantage when selling through saleyards as there is an evenness

in the line of sale cattle. The colour also assists in handling heat conditions better than black hided cattle. Red Angus females reach puberty at a young age, are highly fertile and are renowned for their longevity in the herd. Red Angus females have excellent milk production and have a strong maternal instinct. Combined with easy calving attributes Red Angus females are keenly sought after. Red Angus cattle are considered by breeders to be gentle natured and easy cattle to work. Red Angus also has the ability to be targeted at a range of market specifications.

RED ANGUS

MASTERS OF THE LAND ❝

The very best parts of the Angus and Brahman cattle breeds in one

In northern areas that require added heat tolerance, Red Angus cattle work well

IN northern areas that require added heat tolerance, Red Angus cattle work well on Bos Indicus and their derivative cattle breeds. The progeny resulting are heat tolerant, and highly regarded for their maternal abilities; their steer mates should express improved marbling genetics. High levels of heterosis may be seen when Red Angus are used on cattle of such divergent origins. Using Red Angus allows breeders to take advantage of the complimentary traits existing between Angus and Brahman cattle as well as the heterosis that is expressed in a Bos Taurus x Bos Indicus cross. Leading Australian pastoral companies are using Red Angus in their developing of composite herds. NAPCO are using Red Angus genetics in their Kynuna Composite to access growth and marbling. Red Angus and ABC Composite breeder Andrew Hicks describes his Red Angus as a great breed. He summarises the breed as “A red breed suited for the Australian heat, which is low maintenance, polled with low birth weights, high weight gains, and has top carcass attributes.”

The Red Angus is the best of both worlds when it comes to cattle.

ROMAGNOLA Romagnolas thrive in any environment with fast growth rates that produce high-yielding, lean carcasses.

ROMAGNOLA MEETS MARKET Unsurpassed for growth rate and muscularity by any other European breed

â??

We need to be able to identify and focus on those factors that have a real impact on the efficiency of our production system. Page 76

TRIAL work at the Beef Quality Cooperative Research Centre in southern NSW has shown that a wide range of genotypes will produce carcasses of acceptable eating quality for the domestic market. The steers evaluated were the progeny of Hereford cows mated to a range of European, British and Wagyu sires. For this market, where age is a primary consideration, growth rate and carcass yield will be the most important traits that determine profitability for the producer. This was borne out in the C.R.C trials, where, with saleable beef valued at $10 per kg, the steers by European sires produced carcasses valued up to $140 above the other breed types. The trials are valuable because with new technologies for beef production continually being developed, it is sometimes difficult for cattlemen to keep everything in perspective and to get our priorities right. We need to be able to identify and focus on those factors that have

a real impact on the efficiency of our production system. The selection of bulls for their propensity to marble and the development of DNA tests for the presence of genes that contribute to tenderness, are both means by which the eating quality of beef may be improved. However before we adopt new technologies such as these, we must consider two things: Firstly the critical level of expression for each characteristic. That is, the level beyond which there is no financial reward for further improvement. Secondly, the negative correlation that can exist between traits, such as between some adaptive and production traits or between growth rate and marbling. The Romagnola breed holds a unique position in the industry in relation to both of these considerations: It inherits the adaptive traits and strong constitution of its Bos Indicus ancestors and, at the same time, is unsurpassed for growth rate and muscularity by any other European breed.

changing conditions without the need to trade off performance for quality. Mated to British bred cows, Romagnola bulls not only generate maximum growth and higher yielding carcasses but have already proven to do so without any adverse effect on marbling. "Australian beef producers are recognising the Romagnola for it’s ability to adapt and thrive in all environments, with superior fertility and maternal function and to produce beef with excellent eating quality characteristics." Romagnola cattle are found in all states of Australia, they are primarily used in cross breeding programs to produce superior animals for all modern beef markets.

THE CROSS

Brahmagnola The Brahmagnola has been developed due to strong demand for an animal which exhibits the muscularity, fertility and constitution of the Romagnola with the adaptation of the Brahman.

6356145ad

In addition, Italian breeders and researchers have focused strongly on improving the eating quality of the end product to satisfy their discerning customers. At present most of our markets do not pay a premium for quality criteria such as tenderness and marbling. Under these circumstances high growth rate and high yield are the most important production traits. However, interest in the eating quality of beef is increasing and more markets are incorporating quality criteria in their specifications, such as in the MSA system. The Romagnola is one breed that can be used to meet these

SANTA GERTRUDIS Santa Gertrudis can be seen flourishing in all states of Australia from the harsh cold climates of Victoria and Tasmania, to the sun-baked plains of the Northern Territory and tropical Queensland.

THE SANTA GERTRUDIS BULL Necessity brought about the creation and development of this breed of beef cattle THE Santa Gertrudis bull is renowned as one of the industry’s most efficient beef producers. You will notice immediate improvements with the first calf crop. The calves will have no trouble at birth with smaller birth weights than most of the recently imported breeds and yet they are renowned for their rapid growth. The use of a Santa Gertrudis bull will introduce heat tolerance, tick resistance and most importantly, when crossed with British breeds, an immediate drop in the number of losses due to eye cancer and pink eye. In recent years breeders of Santa cattle in Australia’s more temperate climates have consistently recorded significant reduction in losses caused by bloat. Santa cattle have the ability to thrive on lush pasture without

suffering from bloat - a problem which causes untold losses every year in some of Australia’s southern states. Mature Santa Gertrudis bulls weigh in excess of 900 kg, with 1000 kg or more not uncommon. The average scrotal circumference is frequently in excess of 40cm. Weight gain is one of the most highly heritable performance traits in beef cattle - daily weight gains of Santa Gertrudis bulls is regularly monitored at more than 1.5kg per day. Santa bulls have outstanding foraging ability which means they can thrive even under the harshest conditions and they are noted as very active and athletic sires. An inherent trait of Bos Indicus is their unlaboured gait which enables them to easily cope with long distances to food or water, unlike some European and British breeds.

Strong healthy calves mean a higher percentage from birth to weaning and more profit in your pocket.

Mature Santa Gertrudis bulls weigh from 900kg.

SANTA GERTRUDIS

THE SANTA GERTRUDIS COW Renowned for their natural nursing ability and excellent maternal instinct THE Santa Gertrudis female has become a highly sought after commodity in the Australian beef industry with regular sales of females from central and northern Queensland to cattlemen in southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria. Few beef cattle breeds can boast regular sales of females into these areas and the reasons are clear. The Santa Gertrudis cow is one of the most efficient producers in the industry. The mature Santa cow can weigh up to 750kg, she has excellent milking ability with high butterfat content, few calving problems and in competitive tests has produced consistently larger calf crops than other breeds. One of the major attractions of Santa Gertrudis female is their longevity. Producers regularly record details of 14-15 year-old cows still producing a calf each year without fail. One breeder had a foundation second cross female which had produced its 18th calf at 21 years-of-age. Because of this outstanding ability, producers are not forced to continually use replacement heifers; this translates to better gross margins, and more money in your pocket. The large mature size of the Santa female also provides excellent salvage value. Their natural mothering instinct is also evident with regular examples of one or two females keeping watch over a large number of calves while the other cows graze. For establishing a good strong breeding base the Santa Gertrudis female has much to offer.

‘Bred in Central Qld to perform on buffel grass’

Santa Gertrudis cows calve easily and their highly developed protective mothering instinct is regularly illustrated with a few mother cows tending 10 to 20 calves while the others are grazing.

There are plenty of reasons to choose the exceptional Santa Gertrudis IT WAS desirable in the eyes of those at the King Ranch, Texas, USA where the breed was developed, that other cattlemen should enjoy the benefits of increased production, even in harsh conditions that could be obtained by these cattle. Since arriving in Australia Santa Gertrudis have gone on to become one of the leading breeds of beef cattle excelling in the areas of cross-breeding, weight for age, food conversion efficiency and daily weight gain. There are plenty of reasons why you should choose to breed Santa Gertrudis cattle. Santa cattle adapt easily and quickly to a wide range of climatic conditions and can be seen flourishing across most of Australia. This breed is known for being exceptionally good foragers; due to their excellent walking ability they can travel long distances for food and water. With exceptional longevity,

bulls have been known to work until 14-15 years of age and regularly females of 13-15 years or more have been recorded as producers of top calves. Santa Gertrudis cattle maintain high buyer demand because of their reputation for high yielding carcass with the ability to produce ideal fat coverage for the market.

SENEPOL

CROSS WITH SENEPOL... AND DON’T LOOK BACK

Senepol is renowned for their high vigour, quiet nature and tender beef

Senepol are red in colour, medium sized, naturally polled cattle that have good conformation to produce a good carcass.

The development of the breed placed high natural selection pressure on structural soundness, hardiness and fertility. Page 82

ALTHOUGH it is a relative newcomer to Australia, the Senepol breed has already made a significant contribution to the cattle industry. The two breed composite of the N’Dama, a native (Bos Taurus) of Senegal, North West Africa was crossed with the British breed, Red Poll on the island of St Croix in the Caribbean, at the beginning of the 20th Century. The result of infusing the Red Poll was a combining of the N’Dama’s superior traits of heat tolerance, insect resistance and ability to thrive on poor quality forage, with Red Poll’s carcass quality, high fertility, feed efficiency, quiet nature and renowned maternal and milking ability.

The development of the breed placed high natural selection pressure on structural soundness, hardiness and fertility. Females are renowned for their ease of calving and calves for their fast ‘get up and go’ vigour. The progeny resulting from cross breeding with Senepol have a significant economic advantage through their inheritance of Senepol traits. These include females reaching puberty earlier, the slick-coat gene, strongly polled, heat tolerant, and a docile temperament, meaning they are easily managed and handled in extensive pastoral conditions.

SENEPOL Although it is a relative newcomer to Australia, the Senepol breed has already made a significant contribution to the northern cattle industry.

UDDER QUALITY BREED Senepol are a tough breed of cattle proven to have tender meat ■ Slick coat gene – confers a very short haired, sleek coat, Senepol is the only breed available in Australia that is known to be a carrier of the gene ■ Females reach puberty earlier than Bos Indicus breeds ■ Strongly polled ■ Heat tolerance ■ Disease and insect resistance ■ Solid red colour, ranging from dark red to a lighter honey colour ■ Have a good eye and skin pigmentation ■ Docile temperament – being easily managed and handled in extensive pastoral conditions

Their maternal ability (both in quantity of milk and quality of maternal care); feed efficiency (feed trials have proved their superiority in feed conversion); excellent weight gain (South Devon steers regularly win the Lardner Park grass fed trials in Gippsland) and quality of meat (2016 Brisbane Ekka – South Devon steers from Bolinda stud won the Highest Individual Carcase Index Score). At Farmfest 2017 in Toowoomba, the South Devon heifer Kildare Sassy 25 won the coveted Cattleman’s Cup from all comers. This competition involves weighing and scanning the animals with the resulting data used to work out the Carcase Merit Index. Not only did Kildare Sassy win, but two other South Devons were in the finals and all South Devons scanned in the

high Super Elite range. Recent breeding trends in Australia have modified the size a little, to better suit Australian conditions. Also, the majority of South Devons in Australia would now be polled, and Australian polled genetics have been exported (including to South Africa to introduce polling to their herds). An Australian polled South Devon bull has recently been sold to a Red Wagyu breeding operation to introduce polled genetics there. As with other breeds, there are black South Devons available. In April 2017, 44 South Devon breeders from the UK, New Zealand, and Australia travelled to South Africa for the World Conference and stud tour. We visited several South African South Devon stud and commercial herds in a wide range of climatic conditions; from the high veld with snow in winter, to plains similar to Western Queensland but with a temperature variation from -18 in winter to 45 degrees in summer.

SOUTH DEVON STANDING TALL : South Devon cattle are a breed of British beef cattle. They are the largest of the British native breeds

winter to +45 in summer and a 12" rainfall. In Port Elizabeth, the touring party were joined by the South African breeders and the World Conference was held, with three South African experts as the keynote speakers. All three speakers were extremely informative and quite inspirational. South Devon breeders in South Africa are small in number but big on ideas, and having celebrated 100 years of South Devon breeding there, I can confidently predict that the breed will be going strong for its 200th Anniversary. They are an excellent cross with Tropical and European cattle as well as with other British breeds, and thrive in a wide range of climatic conditions.

The cattle were very well suited to the conditions they had to live in, and the breed characteristics (temperament, adaptability, fertility, feed efficiency, weight gain etc.) were well displayed. We also visited the 140000 head Karan feedlot, a state of the art family owned business and a major local employer. As in Australia, South Devon genetics are used in South African commercial operations to add the traits of temperament, fertility, feed efficiency/weight gain and meat quality. SPECKLE PARK

SPECKLE PARK HIGHLY REGARDED The cattle are renowned for being a tough breed and are bred in countries all around the world. SPECKLE Parks, the beef cattle breed created in Canada, are now an internationally sought after breed. They are a carcass orientated yet maternal pure bred (not a composite), breed of beef cattle. They are Polled and British Bred originating from Canada. Speckle Parks are moderate sized. Mature cows range in weight from 600kgs to 850kgs and mature bulls can get up to 1000kgs plus. Calves average 30 to 40kgs at birth and wean off at about 230kgs to 370kgs plus. Speckle Park cattle come in a variety of colour patterns. They are predominantly black with white top line and underline, with speckled hips and sometimes shoulders and with a black or black roan face. The second colour pattern is the leopard pattern. I A great all round breed, fit for any climate. t is similar to the speckled pattern but there are definite black spots on the animal instead of just speckles. The white animals with some black hair on the body are considered ‘leopards’. The third colour pattern is the ‘white’ pattern. The white animals have white hair on the body and face but have black points. i.e. eyes, ears, nose, and hooves. The fourth is solid black. There is a percentage of blacks. The solid black heifers are registrable and can be used in the purebred

They are tough, real tough, you can throw any harsh climatic situation at them and they survive herd and the bulls are registrable but cannot be used in the purebred herd. With their fine skin and hair in summer and a quick to ‘slick off’ hair coat, Speckle Parks adapt well to the Canadian summers as well as being able to ‘coat up’ when needed for their notoriously cold winters. They are tough, real tough, you can throw any harsh climatic situation at them and they survive, get back in calf, rear a good one, yet are so easy to feed and come back in condition quickly after hard times. Traits that will stand them in good stead in Australian’s harsh environment.

Speckle Park are sought after world wide.

SPECKLE PARK

HIGH QUALITY CATTLE INTERNATIONALLY SOUGHT

Speckle Park cattle are some of the best beef in the business

Butchers and meat graders are very impressed with the consistently high quality of the Speckle Park carcass.

IN Canada, and now increasingly in Australia and New Zealand, butchers and meat graders are very impressed with the consistently high quality of the Speckle Park carcass. It isn't uncommon to get an exceptionally good carcass from any breed, but what is impressive is when the carcass from a particular breed is consistently good. That is the case with the Speckle Park breed. Another impressive fact about the Speckle Park breed is their unique ability of being able to achieve a AAA carcass without excess outer fat cover. Most breeds are able to achieve AAA carcass but often at the expense of excess outer fat. Speckle Park can achieve a AAA carcass with minimal fat cover, thus grading YG1-AAA. Their docile nature is the the key to more weight gain and less stress on both man and beast. Speckle Parks are docile animals and their gentle disposition makes them a pleasure to work with. They are however tribal and prefer to be in the company of other cattle. The breed comes in three colours and in black. Black animals must have the word [black] after its name. All black animals must have DNA verification before they can be registered. Rarely, there are some animals born with red markings. These cannot be registered. Animals with horns also cannot be registered.

Speckle Park cattle are now internationally sought after.

TEXAS LONGHORN FROM THE SHORES OF SPAIN: The Mexico - Texas area became the blending pot for the evolution of this historic breed of cattle.

TEXAS LONGHORN Steeped in history, the breed is a part of the Australian cattle story

They bred profusely during the American civil war-days and became the financial salvation of the south west.

THE ancestors of today’s Texas Longhorns came from the shores of Spain with Columbus in 1493 to the Americas. In 1521 cattle were introduced into Mexico. Explorers and settlers then brought cattle into Texas where these cattle intermingled with cattle from eastern settlers left on their own without the benefit of man. These animals survived through the years developing the traits to survive. Traits were genetically fixed to result in survival of this breed. They bred profusely during the American civil war-days and became the financial salvation of the south west. Men returning from the war found them as their only source of income, as the thousands of Texas Longhorns, wandering free in the south worth nothing, but were hungered for by people in the north. An estimated 10 million Texas Cattle were trailed to the northern markets between 1866 and 1895. However, in the late 1800’s the open ranges were fenced and other breeds of cattle from England were introduced that were beefier and fatter for marketing hides and tallow.

Numbers dwindled and the true Texas Longhorn was near extinction. As concern grew the US government acquired a small herd of 23 head in 1927. These old-time cattle were the foundation of the Wichita Mountains Nation Wildlife Refuge in Cache, Oklahoma. There were also six other breeders with small mobs of these old-time Texas Longhorn. This group developed a registry of bloodlines and through the year’s interest increased in 1964 the Texas Longhorn Breeder’s Association was formed and later the International Texas Longhorn Association was also formed. Through the efforts of those Breeders more than 250,000 head of Texas Longhorn cattle have been registered in the last couple of decades. The quality of Texas Longhorn cattle has noticeably increased. Texas Longhorns were introduced to Australian in 1980. Today we are importing the best semen straws and embryos available from selected parts of the US and Canada. Page 97

HORSESHOE B LONGHORNS Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours and Safaris offers a unique perspective

Why choose Texas Longhorns? ■ Lean Meat: The breed produces naturally less fat and lower cholesterol ■ Longevity: Texas Longhorn breed well into their teens ■ Reproductive Efficiency: Large pelvic openings and low birth weights result in live calves ■ Docility: Longhorn cattle are intelligent, easy to work and to handle ■ Adaptability: The breed thrives in climates from hot, damp coastal regions to harsh winters ■ Hybrid Vigour: Enhances your present breed and gives you a new genetic pool

The star of the attraction is JR, a former Guinness World record holder.

HORESHOE B Longhorns was established in 1996 by Michael and Lynda Bethel who have consistently focused on breeding quality full blood Texas Longhorns since then. Due to the interest and historical significance of the cattle, in 2009 they established Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours and Safaris - one the most unique tourists attractions in Australia. The award winning attraction not only focuses on the Texas Longhorns but offers and interesting and historical perspective on the breed. The star of the attraction is JR, a former Guinness World record holder whose horns exceed 3 metres from tip to tip.

WAGYU The Japanese Wagyu breed offers the finest quality of beef available in Australia.

TASTE THE EXPERIENCE Wagyu is unsurpassed for its marbling and ability to improve meat quality in cross-breeding

Wagyu is known for its exquisite marbled beef quality and excellent temperament. Page 100

WAGYU is a Japanese beef cattle breed derived from native Asian cattle. The name ‘Wagyu’ refers to all Japanese beef cattle, where ‘Wa’ means Japanese and ‘gyu’ means cow. Wagyu were originally draft animals used in Japanese agriculture, and were selected for their physical endurance. This selection favoured animals with more intra-muscular fat cells, or ‘marbling’, which provided a readily available source of energy. Wagyu is a naturally horned breed and the cattle are either black or red in colour. Wagyu is a unique breed that has amongst its key

attributes, other than the exquisite marbled beef quality, a high calving ease, excellent temperament, resilient in the feedlot and a high carcass yield. Most important is the economic value derived from each animal, which is currently 100 per cent more than pastoral cattle, sold at either the farm gate or as a long fed carcass. The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity as it becomes more apparent to Australian beef producers that there is a real need and demand for high quality carcasses that derive from the marbling prominent in the Japanese genetics.

WAGYU

WHY BREED WAGYU Tender beef provides an unrivalled dining excellence WAGYU breeding requires patience as it takes time to build up a viable herd and end markets, this then becomes your own economic moat. The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity as it becomes more apparent to Australian beef producers that there is a real need and demand for high quality carcasses that derive from the marbling prominent in the Japanese genetics. The Wagyu breed’s ability to improve meat quality in cross-breeding programs has been important in improving the capacity of Australia’s exports to Japan to ‘grade’ higher. Australian Wagyu beef is now sold globally with 80-90 per cent of production exported. Some 10-20 per cent is sold domestically, playing a major role in improving the quality of beef for local consumption. Wagyu strengths include: ■ Outstanding beef eating quality ■ High marbling, delivering beef tenderness, juiciness and flavour ■ Softer fat composition: higher ratio of unsaturated fats – providing a healthier beef product ■ Finer meat texture ■ Strong dressing percentage and high retail beef yield ■ Not excessive back fat ■ Calving ease ■ Fertility and virility ■ Quiet temperament ■ Versatile adaptation to environments ■ Early female maturity ■ Strong foragers ■ Transport well over long distances ■ Resilient in the feedlot, including resistance to Bovine Respiratory Disease ■ Strong demand from high value markets including Japan

Marbling gives Wagyu beef its “melt in the mouth” moisture and tenderness. When cooked, the marbling is absorbed into the muscle and gives the meat its tenderness and flavour.

A Wagyu cross Angus. Cross-breeding introduces the Wagyu characteristics to enhance the carcass and other desirable traits.
