FOOD FACIAL IT is no secret that as much as we would love to be able to devote endless amounts of time to skincare, making a monthly facial appointment isn’t always possible. And as all beauty specialists will tell you, nothing quite compares to the skills and expertise of a professional, but when you are pushed for time, raiding your kitchen and cupboard is a good alternative.

UMPKIN Packed with anti-aging antioxidants and vitamins C and A, the flesh you would ordinarily scoop out can be processed into a thick mask to help hydrate and soften skin. Get two cups pumpkin flesh, four tablespoons low-fat vanilla yoghurt, four tablespoons honey and one teaspoon nutmeg, and blend together in a blender or food processor for a DIY face mask. YOGHURT It contains lactic acid which may help clear blemishes and discolouration, and reduce fine wrinkles. Mix one cup Greek yoghurt with two to three drops of almond or olive oil and a tablespoon of honey. AVOCADO Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated fats, vitamin B and potassium. They are important for heart health, and also help moisturise the skin. They are also great for dry skin. Mix together one avocado, one egg white, two tablespoons of quick oats, and one teaspoon of lemon juice for a wonderful face mask. HONEY Cleansing with antibacterial properties, honey helps the skin retain moisture (and tastes delicious). Mash together half a banana, one tablespoon of oats and one tablespoon of milk (make sure you keep it out of your hair). GREEN TEA Green tea has lots of anti-inflammatory compounds and tannins to help reduce puffiness on your skin, while fighting premature ageing. Chill damp tea bags in the fridge and put on your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. OATS Sunburn-soothing, inflammation-reducing and gently exfoliating, oats make the perfect addition to any natural face mask.

SUPPLEMENTS: HELP OR HARM? Understanding what we put into our bodies is imperative to our overall health
M
ultivitamins are a multi billion dollar industry and are consumed by half the population. Marketing promotes multivitamins as having added benefits to health but are they beneficial or money wasters? Many supplements on our supermarket shelves are derived from synthetic sources that our bodies cannot digest – leaving our body unable to metabolise such forms of supplement which end up in the toilet bowl. Many multivitamins are reported to contain harmful metals, anti-doping agents, and microbes. For example, the synthesis of Vitamin E: manufacturers derive this vitamin from synthetic materials such as acetone, citral, methanesulfonic acid, methylbutenol, ammonium hydroxide, and dimethyl sulfoxide. These are highly flammable, cause skin irritations, are corrosive to eyes, skin and harmful to the digestive tract. Therefore it is highly important to be aware of the source of the vitamin being consumed. When we understand the symptoms and lack of nutrients in our 4

body, we can tailor our choice of supplements and the quality of product and experience increased health. It is important to find a trusted naturopath, integrative general practitioner or health practitioner to prescribe the correct supplements. Essential vitamins and minerals are a vital part of a healthy functioning body. If our food choices lack these nutrients we will require some form of supplementation. Within the field of psychology many studies have reported the positive benefits of fermented cod liver oil. Fermented Cod Liver Oil is high in Omega 3, EFA, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD often respond positively to the use of fish oil. Results showed children reported increased concentration and lower anxiety. Understanding our symptoms with correct prescription of natural substances found in a supplement form can have a positive effect on our health.

JET, SET AND GO With the hectic pace of modern life, it’s often hard to take the time to rest and relax. BY SAMANTHA SARGENT AND HELEN HAWKES
W
ith Easter around the corner, many of us are planning to jet set away on holidays for a few days. And while there are few things more exciting than a pending holiday, often our sleep suffers as a result. Most of us are faced with stress on a day-to-day basis, whether it be physically, emotionally or spiritually. It’s no wonder that many people find it difficult to fall asleep at night, suffer from poor sleep, or wake up feeling tired and flat. This issue is even more relevant when we travel. Squeezing in a quick power nap cannot only help recharge your energy levels but also improve the condition of your skin. Whether you’re on a plane, train or boat, the following tips will help you wake up looking and feeling better. SWITCH YOUR WATCH TO THE TIME OF YOUR DESTINATION WHEN YOU BOARD This will help you adjust to your holiday time, by eating and sleeping at better times. PREPARE THE SPACE Are you feeling too cool? Too hot? Is it too bright? Or too noisy? If temperature is a concern, consider packing a jumper or scarf.
If it’s too light, perhaps a silk eye mask might help. If you’re travelling on a noisy plane or train then invest in a good pair of ear plugs. It might sound over-the-top, but these little additions can make a profound difference to the quality of your sleep, and consequently how you look and feel after that quick nap. THINK ABOUT TAKING YOUR OWN MEALS, OR AT LEAST SNACKS Healthy salads or sushi can be a good alternative to salt and fat-laden airplane meals, especially if you are on a special diet. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HEALING BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and can easily be integrated into daily life via means of an oil burner, adding a couple of drops to warm bath water, applied to the skin in a carrier oil such as jojoba, grape seed or rosehip oil, or sniffed straight from the bottle. HYDRATE FROM THE INSIDE Before shutting your eyes for a quick nap, drink a glass of purified water, and upon waking do the same.

CONSIDER BONE HEALTH
ypically when we think about our health we rarely think about our bones. Building healthy bones now can mean less fractures and possibly no osteoporosis in the later stages of your life. Many of us have heard of it, but what exactly is osteoporosis? It is a disease that causes bones to become less dense, and more susceptible to fractures and breaks. This can affect both men and women, but with a higher occurrence in women. However, there is good news! With a proper diet, exercise and lifestyle, osteoporosis can be easily preventable. Several university studies suggest the most effective way to

increase your bone density is to do load bearing exercises two to three times a week. ‘Load bearing’ simply means any exercise where your bones are under stress from a force being applied on them. For example, a weighted squat will stress the bones in your legs and back. Similarly, a chest press exercise will stress the bones in your arms. Now is the time to consider your health from a wider perspective and take into account elements you may not have before. Make 2018 the year you focus on your “hidden health” and start working out those bones for a stronger, unbreakable you.

ESTABLISHING YOUR OWN STYLE
Andersens Dalby have you covered for every step of your renovation process Renovating your home can be very exciting and deciding on a style for your interiors is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the process. Read on for advice on how you can develop a unique style for your own renovation. Architectural style The first step is to look at the architectural style of your home. This can help you steer your styling direction. Colour palette Colour is highly evocative and can have a dramatic effect on how your home feels. If you’re struggling to define your colour palette, begin by looking at the existing colours in your home and then pick out complementary colours to integrate your renovation with the rest of your home. Picking colours that work together can be a challenge. There are interior design tools available online that you can use to generate ideas for colour palettes, but to judge colour more accurately, it’s best to compare swatch cards and material samples for real in your home so you can see how they interact with the 10

existing design features and lighting conditions. Furniture and furnishings As with choosing colour palettes, selecting furnishings that match your existing decor will yield the most harmonious design result. However, if you like a mish mash of styles, you can go for an eclectic look that blends them all together. Of course, mixing design styles can be more of a balancing act, so consult an interior designer for the most harmonious results. Special touches Splurging a bit on additional design details or statement pieces can really elevate your style from humdrum to “who’d you hire to do this?!”. It shows you’ve put careful thought into your design and gives the eye something to focus on. With considered design choices, your home can become a shining reflection of your personality. Have fun renovating and remember if you run into roadblocks, you can always ask for help. THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU With New Years resolutions starting to wane, maybe a gym membership is all the motivation you need to stay on track.
F
inding the right gym can be make-or-break in your health and fitness goals. LOCATION Find a gym close to work or home. If it’s not, you won’t go. Even better if you can leave some gym gear and a towel there in your own locker. COST Make sure there are no hidden costs, and look for inclusions such as initiation sessions, trial periods and cooling off periods. MEMBERSHIP Visit a couple of times to check out the kind of company you will be keeping. If you are uncomfortable working out in a male dominated environment, go for a female-only gym. Ask about the social opportunities and events. FITNESS ASSESSMENT Many gyms offer a fitness assessment to test body fat, cardiovascular strength, upper and lower body strength, flexibility and core strength. These assessments give your gym an
understanding of your fitness levels, strengths and weaknesses, and allow them to recommend classes and goals. EQUIPMENT You want a good selection of easy to use equipment addressing cardio, strength and flexibility. Cardio equipment should offer information such as kilojoules burned, heart rate and distance covered. WEIGHTS Most experts say weight training is essential to any fitness regime. A good gym will offer a variety of both machines and handweights, so you have a choice how you work out. GROUP CLASSES Ideally you want a gym that offers a good variety of classes, from stretch to spin. Barre body classes, that combine ballet, Pilates and yoga, are very hot at the moment, as are spin classes that include lights or amazing music. But other faves such as yoga, stretch, strength-based classes, cardio tone and Zumba, are great additions.

HERE’S CHEERS TO 70 YEARS Locals get set for 70th Jandowae Show
E
xcitement is at fever pitch for the upcoming 70th annual Jandowae Show, which is set to take place on Saturday, March 24. Seven decades of fun, excitement and the coming together of a community is certainly an event worth celebrating, and the locals intend to do just that. A Full day is planned with the day starting with the Horse and Stud Cattle Events. The children’s entertainment will start mid-morning and will also include Displays of Free Style Bike Riding. The Evening Rodeo and Fireworks will end the day. “The Stewards at Jandowae make us very proud of the Pavilion Display, “ Jandowae and District Show Society President Tanner said. “It is well worth spending some time in the Pavilion to be inspired by the really creative and talented people we have in our District, who display some wonderful exhibits. “We are making a great effort to locate previous Show Girls to

And while the Jandowae Show had always been an event which draws tourists and out-of-towners for the day, Mrs Tanner and the Show Society were quick to acknowledge the unwavering support of locals in the show’s continued success. “Being the 70 years we would like to thank the whole community who has continuously supported the show for many years. “We have too many supporters to name just a few.” So pencil March, 24 into the calendar for a day of fun, excitement and of course, the celebration of 70 incredible years.

WOW WITH COLOUR Reinvent the wheel with these stunning make-up trends for autumn
T
here’s something for almost everyone with this year’s make-up trends! On one side of the spectrum, soft and feminine colours are in – think rose pink lipstick, dewy highlights, gentle pink blush, and smoky sand-coloured eyeshadow. On the other side is a more notable look, with bold accent pieces. Retro-esque clumpy, heavy lashes will be seen everywhere. To get the look, brush your mascara over your lashes several times and optionally add some bold fake lashes as well. Eyebrows this year take an interesting turn into the world of brushed-up brows. While those of us with thick or bushy eyebrows can carry off this trend without any additions, those with thinner brows may like to add some pencil to complete the look. The smoky eye that was everywhere in 2016 has made a comeback, but with a twist. Black or light, sand-coloured shadows are used around the entire eye – bottom and top – or less commonly, just one simple 16

smudge in the corner of the eye near the bridge of the nose. Eyeliner is taking a step further into bold; line your entire eye heavily with black. You can add a heavy flicked-up cat eye, or just a simple ‘fingerprint’ smudge instead. Speaking of eyes, also on-trend this year is a bold stripe of colour across the upper eyelid using either eyeliner or eye shadow – think emerald, teal, turquoise, bright orange, neon green, lilac, bright purple, and more. Finally, glitter and metallics both show no sign of leaving the make-up world this year. Replace your traditional highlighter with a gold one, or if you aren’t quite ready for that bold step, use a metallic liquid lipstick. Our shiny trend is taking a step up from tiny glitter to using rhinestones to line the eyelid or add accents to cheekbones. Meanwhile, traditional glitter is taking a ‘less is more’ approach with a gentle sprinkle on the inside corner of the eye or on lashes.

LIVING IT UP IN STYLE Bring life into your home this autumn with a lounge room which exudes sophistication
T
he living room is where we spend most of our time, and it’s certainly the room our visitors see the most of — so it’s important the space is both functional and stylish. New interior design trends are starting to emerge: think warmer colour palettes with earthy tones, layering natural materials and textures, and softer furniture shapes. Before you start searching “lounge room ideas Australia” and getting totally overwhelmed, it’s important to go back to basics and ask yourself how the space is going to be used, as your design decisions and decorative choices will be influenced by the use of the room. Curvy, plump shapes are growing in popularity for sofas and occasional chairs, and their sculptural form is a great way to begin modernising your space. Velvet and velour are here to stay, so if you’re only making minor decorative updates to your lounge room, try adding velvet

with cushions in an earthy colour palette, or even a velvet ottoman or armchair. LIVING ROOM WALL IDEAS TO TRANSFORM YOUR INTERIOR Mirrors are regularly used for living room wall decor as they add light and ambiance, as well as creating the illusion of more space — especially if placed on the opposite side of the room to a window. If you’re thinking of trying out something bold but are worried about the cost (or even changing your mind), try removable wallpaper. Easy to install and remove (as the name suggests), removable wallpaper is becoming more popular and is a super practical and affordable way to decorate your living room walls. The best bit? It’s not permanent, which is great if you’re renting. www.chinchillanews.com.au

WHY THE HEADLINE RATE IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG
H
ave you ever heard – my rate is better rate because it is lower? This sentiment pulses daily across the airwaves and weaves through the internet like a law unto itself – it is a truth you can be forgiven for believing. Dalby based broker Johnathon Reeves from Cliff&Moss provides a personalised service and sets the record straight on all things finance as well as what brokers do. "Firstly – the headline rate – a marvellous marketing manipulation. Does the cheapest loan equate to the best for you? Rarely. Paradoxically, the most expensive might not be the best either. The best loan is one that matches your unique situation. To show how cheaper isn’t necessarily better - say you are buying a car and want the cheapest one. You find an 18-year-old hatchback for $250. But, you want to go off-road (and make it back). So, you find a $1,000 4WD where

the rust is its best feature. But, it needs to carry children safely…You see where I am going with this. Working out what you need your finance to do for you is the single most important job a broker does.
