The 2024 Riverina Murray Excellence in Building Awards pay homage to a broad array of construction businesses within the towns of Wagga Wagga, Albury, South Albury, Wodonga, Lavington and Baranduda.
The Riverina Murray, also known as Australia’s food bowl, offers spectacular and unforgettable tasting experiences nestled within some of the country’s most beautiful agricultural towns, as well as some of Australia’s most extraordinary building locations.
Projects entered during 2024 demonstrated meticulous work ethic and attention to detail.
Riverina Judges Introduction
Bruno Musitano
Bruno has been teaching Carpentry and Joinery apprentice builders at TAFENSW’s Griffith Campus for the past 30 years. He is a carpenter and builder by trade, having worked on many residential and commercial buildings all over the state as well as three years in a joinery workshop doing all facets of cabinet making, shopfitting and joinery. Bruno also owned a roof tiling company and is still involved for a local firm as its consultant. Bruno has participated as a judge on two occasions for the Master Builders Association, this year and prior to Covid, and is pleased to say it has been a great and rewarding experience to judge grand designs, great new innovations and skilled workmanship in the Riverina and North-Eastern Victorian regions.
Peter Gregurke
Peter Neil Gregurke is a seasoned professional with over 44 years of experience in the building and construction industry. He embarked on his career journey in 1980, starting as an apprentice in the commercial sector before transitioning into becoming a licensed builder. Throughout his career, Peter has not only operated his own successful building business but has also diversified his skill set by inspecting and providing building reports for insurance and real estate companies.
In addition to his hands-on experience, Peter has also shared his wealth of knowledge with future builders and tradespeople as a lecturer at TAFE, where he has imparted valuable insights gained from his extensive career. Over the years, Peter has continuously expanded his qualifications, including certifications in carpentry, building supervision, residential construction, waterproofing, and an Associate Diploma in Applied Science. His commitment to education led him to further his academic achievements with a Bachelor of Teaching degree and subsequently a Bachelor of Education degree.
Peter’s dedication to the industry, coupled with his passion for sharing knowledge and fostering the next generation of builders, underscores his reputation as a respected and accomplished professional in the field of building and construction.

EMMALINE ROCKS
Our winner this year, Emmeline Rocks, although still in the early days of her career, is having a huge impact and we’re excited to see what she does in the future. Graduating from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Technology (Civil) and Master of Engineering (Civil), Emmeline started working in the industry during her degree gaining experience in Infrastructure, Education and Health projects and progressing quickly from a Cadet to a Project Manager. She has created reporting systems including data collection tools and templates for social procurement, delivered talks to local high schools and university careers days, mentored engineering students and trainees — just to name a few of the contributions Emmeline has made to the industry already. We are very pleased to announce Emmeline as the worthy recipient of the 2024 Women in Building Award for the Riverina Region.

It is once again a difficult decision for the judges to choose the Young Builder of the Year. After narrowly missing last year’s award, this year’s winner is Liam Trethowan, who continues to demonstrate his commitment to excellence in the industry. Not only has he placed nominations for award-winning houses, but this year he has also competed in the commercial sector and continues to receive positive feedback from all clients interviewed by the judges. Troy’s vision was to create a top-tier townhouse subdivision in Junee’s core, despite facing numerous challenges like material shortages, limited trades, and homeowner warranty restraints. The development consists of seven 3-bedroom and two 2-bedroom townhouses in a little village setting, tailored for an aging community with features such as step-free access, wide doors (870mm), and high-standard inclusions. Despite hurdles, the result is truly impressive.

This is a magnificent inner-city Albury home built on a 400m2 block. The project has many features such as a central courtyard and spacious rooms that capture an abundance of natural light and ventilation from the double-glazed steel framed windows, enabling the presence of winter heat from the northern sun to work so effectively. Impressive finishes to the build such as the 3.3m high entry doors, herringbone pattern oak timber flooring, 3.3m high ceilings and the veined marble finishes to the kitchen, bathrooms and fireplace surrounds give a smooth fresh, bright and classical appearance.

The judges were impressed by the volume and scale of the Zauner projects, including those such as the Stockholm, Middy’s, and Cobram SES projects. Additionally, they recognized the challenge of executing these projects under difficult and restricted conditions. In particular, the Northeast Health Wangaratta project involved a comprehensive range of tasks, such as consultation, design, barricading and isolating areas, temporary relocation, demolition, dust and noise control, construction, and completion all while ensuring that the various hospital departments continued to operate normally. This highlights the effectiveness of project management and execution in demanding circumstances.

The disused Albury pumphouse — a quintessential example of 19th-century industrial architecture — was revitalised into a creative arts facility. Careful demolition work preceded the build, refurbishing the existing building and adding an office complete with kitchen and bathroom amenities. Preserving the historic roofing profile, intricate masonry work, and painting required special attention. Meticulous material selection achieved a balance between modernity and timeless beauty.

It was an open book collaboration between Zauner and the client. Ultimately, the project was delivered within the specified timeframe.

Built on historically significant land, this 2.5-storey library is a collaboration between School Infrastructure NSW and Hilltop Council. The building features separate entrances for the public and school, and the careful zoning of areas for their respective uses. The library targets a 4-star Green Star equivalency rating through sustainable procurement practices, passive design strategies and the integration of solar panels.

The Stockholm Project, designed and constructed by Zauner Construction, is a stateof-the-art 47,000m2 cardboard packaging facility, with a main production space, waste conveyor trench and service rooms. Given its size, multiple site managers oversaw different aspects of the build. Engineering adjustments, including the use of fibrecrete, were made to manage costs. Stockholm represents a blend of cutting-edge technology and eco-conscious design.
