Something about Judah BY DARREN HALLESY

HOW DO YOU IMPRESS DELTA, SEAL, BOY GEORGE AND KELLY ROWLAND AT ONCE? 20-YEAR-OLD LAIDLEY MAN AND WINNER OF THE VOICE 2017 JUDAH KELLY SHARES HIS STORY.

“T

he dream was my mother’s,” says the 20-year-old singer-guitarist. “It said she’d have a musical son and she’d name him Judah — Mum said I was humming before I could talk. “In my mind there was nothing else I was ever going to do, it was always going to be music for me, and I’ve always wanted to perform.” Over a gripping ten weeks this year, Australia watched as Judah’s extraordinary gift came to fruition in season six of The Voice. The born country-soul singer’s blind audition of Tennessee Whiskey had Delta, Seal, Boy George and Kelly Rowland all turning chairs in breathless admiration. “I remember when I was three or four, I was in New Zealand and my grandmother wanted to show me off, so I sang in front of the whole church and that was the earliest performance I remember.” Judah took out The Voice this year and his debut single Count On Me went straight to number one on the charts. Including that life-changing version of Tennessee Whiskey, the rest of the album showcases a unique and passionate slant on the country genre, as well as Judah’s resolution to make his own mark as an artist. Over 10 weeks the 20-year-old from Laidley spent most of his time waiting to be sent home, but when he made the top four his mentality changed. “I was approached to audition for The Voice last year through a friend, and the day before the auditions I pulled out,” Judah says. 10 | September 2017

“I read the email and thought I couldn’t be bothered... [but] this time I wanted to put the effort in. “It wasn’t until I made the top four that I thought I could win it.” Judah didn’t think he would make it through. “I kept thinking I’ll be cut next, and it didn’t happen, then I thought next week I’ll go for sure,” he says. “I just kept thinking it was my time to go, but then when I got top four I really started to think that maybe I could have a crack at it — my mentality changed. “It went from top eight to top four quickly, and people said to me they could see a change in my approach from that point — I took that ‘take no prisoners’ approach.” Judah made his debut aged four, in a New Zealand church where his grandma proudly propped him up to perform. His professional career began at 10, when he started fronting his parents’ karaoke business in Bowen. “People wouldn’t rock up until 10pm,” he explains. “Somebody had to sing ‘til then and it was usually me.

“Dealing with drunk people and whatever else happens in pubs — seeing all that so young definitely helped.” For five years Judah has worked as a live bass player, guitarist and studio session player. Last year alone, he drove 90,000 kilometres to play innumerable gigs. “When I won, there was a few seconds of realisation,” he says. “In that situation I didn’t want to mishear what was said. “I heard my name and I thought... really? You sure? It was genuine shock, and I think the look on my face showed how I was feeling.” The next week was a whirlwind for Judah, who was raced around between promotion and recording, while battling sickness and lack of sleep. “It took a week or so to sink in to be honest, there was no time straight after the show to absorb it,” he says. “The Voice wrapped up, then there was an after party, then I got about 30 minutes’ sleep, then had to do the first of 36 interviews. “Then I was doing a video clip for the single, then it was straight into www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

recording the album… there was no chance to take in what had happened.” Count On Me was the original song that won Judah the title in the nail-biting series climax. “We did the Count On Me album in 10 days, so it was literally a week after I’d won we started,” he says. “Normally it takes three to six months to do an album and we did it in 10 days. “Unfortunately I had laryngitis for a few days, so I went from The Voice to no voice, and that was a stress that we didn’t need.” His talent was clearly exceptional. “It’s a different kind of energy singing live versus recording in the studio,” Judah says. “I think I perform better live, that’s just me personally — it’s an energy you don’t get in the studio. “If there was a way to get that, I’d be happy to go there and record.” The self-confessed fan of motown and country music is happy with the album he’s about to release, and hopes that people pick up his influences in the music, and on the cover. “Growing up I listened to motown, www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

from Michael Jackson to The Temptations, then at some point I liked country music, and turned to Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Vince Gill,” he says. “When I was recording the album I found some songs come easy, some take longer — you basically do a few takes and pick the best. “The album cover is a reference to Johnny Cash, it’s the kind of vibe we were going for, and I’ve played lots of his music over the years.” Judah realises he’s been given a great opportunity and plans to make the most of the chances he’s been given, so you can expect to see him playing live for many years to come, as he believes that’s what he does best. It’s a long way from the man who was often skint. “There’s a perception that people on TV talent shows aren’t good, and aren’t that talented,” Judah says. “This tour in September is just me and a guitar… there’s nowhere to hide. “It will show that I can sing and I’m a musician, not just someone performing one song at a time on TV.”

To hear Judah plead for love in the stark soul groove of If I Go, and wring pure triumph in his first recorded co-write, When I Get Back Home, is to hear his story etched in songs of the most affecting kind. “It’s true that I did have minus ninety bucks in my account when I went for The Voice,” Judah says. “I was driving a car that cost more in fuel to get to the gig than the gig was paying. “It’s a welcome change now to be in this position.” The future [is] rushing just as fast into view. “The goal is to keep playing shows, that’s the plan,” he says. “It’s where I exceed, live performances. “That’s where I see myself going — I’ve been given a great chance, and I’m going to take it and run hard with it.” Judah is still adjusting to fame, but he remains with his feet firmly on the ground. “I once had someone cry when they met me,” Judah says. “That was a first, so I just gave them a hug. “These are the people who supported me through the show, bought the songs, voted for me… and if I have to stand there for a few seconds and take a photo, then I’m happy to do that. “The main thing for me is to keep it real and to keep making music that makes people feel something. “I want to make something with meaning, that’s what the goal is. As long as I can pay my rent, I’m happy. If it gets bigger than that, that’s a cool bonus.” September 2017 | 11

Stage is set for Spring Polo in Queens Park P

onies, glamour, fashion, food and drink — a polo match is equally exciting for what takes place on and off the field. And it will be all happening in Toowoomba’s own Queens Park this September, when Spring Polo comes to life. Now in its second year, the event will once again coincide with the official Carnival of Flowers Week and will offer a truly unique opportunity for those who come along. Event organisers, The Event Group Toowoomba’s Cassandra Hunter, Jo Capp and Maree Parsons said it was going to be a wonderful day and a great opportunity for those attending to be a part of something special. “Thanks to the wonderful support of the Downs Polo Club and the Toowoomba Regional Council this year’s event is shaping up to be twice as big as last year’s event,” Mrs Parsons said.

Beacon of hope With friendship at the forefront of what he does, Toowoomba man Terry Collins delivers a unique type of support to prisoners

F

or Toowoomba man Terry Collins, life has always been about community. Born on the family farm at Willowvale near Warwick, Terry started life in a small community which gave him the grounding for the rest of his life. “We only had 21 kids at the Willowvale school and the same teacher for eight years,” he smiled. “We had a family of 11 while the Fitzgeralds had 16. “It was a good Christian community and looking back, it’s the quality of those people that strikes me. “Out of the 21 kids at the school, two

became Catholic priests and another two (religious) ministers. “It was a simple life but it gave me the foundation for the rest of my life. “There was great generosity of spirit to help one another in that community.” Terry completed his education at Downlands College which he described as “a different community”. After completing his schooling at Downlands College he joined Queensland Rail and, apart from two years national service, he was to spend 47 years with the railway before his retirement six years ago. Terry and his wife Noreen, an Allora girl, had eight children and through his work with the railway the family got to spend time in many communities up and down the state. Having started as an engine cleaner with the railway in Warwick, Terry moved on to be a railway train fireman at Mt Isa before becoming a train driver, travelling the state. “In the smaller towns you really get the sense of community and get involved in sport and other things,” Terry said. “I got to meet a lot of good people and some larrikins too.”

‘‘

I have 20 to 30 blokes I see weekly and we’ve developed a friendship. Since retirement in Toowoomba, Terry and Noreen have taken to various volunteer work with Noreen involved in St Patrick’s parish Care and Concern movement among other things while Terry has found yet another community with which to engage. For the past four years he has been involved in the prison chaplaincy program. Friends of his had been involved in the prison chaplaincy program for some time and, believing Terry was ideal for such volunteer work, took him along to see how the service worked. “It was a real eye opener but I thought it was such an important program and I really took to it,” he said. “It’s Christian based and we have five or six different denominations who work together. “We’re all working for the same

purpose though with a different approach.” Terry said the chaplaincy program provided support for long-term as well as short-term prisoners, some of whom come from Toowoomba, Darling Downs and Lockyer regions who are especially pleased to catch up with news from their home towns. “I have 20 to 30 blokes I see weekly and we’ve developed a friendship,” he said. “Some of them are very talented, there is one fellow who is a long-term prisoner who is a very talented Aboriginal artist while others play musical instruments. “Some of them are studying for degrees to better themselves when they get out. “We don’t know the reason why they’re in there and we don’t ask, though sometimes they tell us. “The sad thing is the effect that drugs have had on some of them.” Terry also conducts a church service once a month that is also well attended. “We had one service where a few of them grab their guitars, drums and other instruments for the service. “We really had it rockin’,” he grinned.

If it's a successful sale you're looking for... An Outstanding Agent The best thing I ever did was find Sue…

Appointing Sue as my real estate agent to sell my house was the best decision I could have made. Not only is Sue very personable and easy to work with, I also found her experience and her in-depth knowledge of the Toowoomba market made the whole selling process incredibly easy. Sue allowed me sell my house with no stress, whilst also achieving a great result for me with a better than expected sale price. This was achieved within two weeks of listing. I would definitely recommend Sue to anyone thinking of selling. Melissa Sardon Street, Centenary Heights

I highly recommend Sue. We signed with her on a Monday and had a contract by Friday. Negotiations were easy and Sue was in regular contact and always available. She is also professional and very knowledgeable. Tahlia Greenwattle Street, Glenvale

A Fantastic Agent

So approachable and easy to talk to. Sue worked really hard to sell our property with the best outcome for us. Sue is very professional and I would recommend Sue to anyone looking to buy or sell. Katrina Heritage Court, Glenvale

A Great Agent

Sue was my perfect agent, she understood what I wanted and expected from her as a Real Estate Agent. She is a great communicator, always kept in touch with me on how things were going with my open house and expected sale price. Sue understood and allowed me to have my say in every aspect of the sale. She behaves in a very professional and friendly manner, ensuring I got the best price on the sale of my home. I am recommending Sue to all my friends who intend on either buying or selling a house. Kerry Poinciana Street, Newtown

Id love to help you too. Sue Edwards

An Emotional Sale Made Easy

I would highly recommend Sue Edwards when it comes to buying or selling. We had to regretfully sell my grandmother’s house —this was a very emotional time for all involved. Sue was not only compassionate and understanding, she went above and beyond the call of duty for our family. We didn’t have to do a thing and when we did Sue would come to us and explain what was happening and keep us up to date with the progress. The house sold within two weeks and we received exactly what we wanted. We cannot thank Sue enough for her professionalism, commitment and understanding. Cassandra Lobwein Court, Middle Ridge

en wear their resumes on their faces, however they do not often show the signs of aging as early as women. According to dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, men’s skin is 20 to 30 per cent thicker than women’s with the added advantages of hair growth and more active oil glands. Male skin has a reduced anti-oxidant capacity and is more prone to sun-damage. Therefore, diligent use of sunscreen is important to keep your man looking younger. Due to their larger muscles of expression, men develop more severe wrinkles in the forehead, frown and periorbital areas. They therefore need larger doses of muscle relaxant. A good cosmetic doctor/nurse will use treatments that will emphasise their male patients’ masculine features by restoring the jawline and lifting the sunken cheek without overcorrecting and feminising it. CITY HEART FASHION EVENT T

he City Heart Fashion Event will showcase Toowoomba as a major fashion shopping precinct on September 9 with more than 40 clothing shops being involved in the event at the Armitage Centre, Empire Theatre. Organisers of the event, Beau Minnett and Christine Coorey, have revamped the runway event to cater for the city’s growing population with the goal being for people to stop and shop in Toowoomba. “We have so many unique boutiques in the city and we want to showcase the city as a one-stop shop for all things fashion,” Beau says. “There has been a growing trend in Toowoomba, across the Darling Downs and south west for the past few years of people shopping online. “We want to encourage people to come back into the city to shop. “We are comparable to any big city — we have the infrastructure to cater for all demographics and we want to help promote the city as a shopping precinct.” More than 30 local models will take to the catwalk for the event, so not only will it showcase local fashion houses but also our local talent pool of models. “We also have some special guests who will take to the runway — former Toowoomba lads from the band Interim featuring Alec Snow who was known as Matt from Home and Away will take part in the event,” Beau says. Alec, who decided to leave Home and Away at the start of this year to concentrate on Interim, said although the boys haven’t been on a

catwalk before they were looking forward to coming home and giving back to Toowoomba. “We are thrilled to be coming back home to take part in the City Heart Fashion Event and to be a part of the community that supported us from the start,” Alec says. Tickets for the City Heart Fashion Event are available at the Empire Theatre Box Office or at www.empiretheatre.com.au. A CATCH-UP WITH BRENDAN HILLIER OF LOCAL BAND AND ART COLLABORATIVE PROJECT, CAS KLU. Brendan, tell us about Cas Klu. Cas Klu is a project that started out with me writing songs in my bedroom on an old retro Casiotone Keyboard. I’ve always been drawn to retro gear and sounds. 80s and 90s pop music is a massive influence. Cas Klu then grew into a collaboration project, mixing in other musician’s styles and influences. Styles blended and the result is Cas Klu. Why did you decide to combine music with art and photography? It all started when I saw Miami Horror live, Ben Plant (Miami Horrors creative mind) was cleverly mixing art to match the vibe and colour of the music. I was emotional and creatively inspired to try and attempt the same idea. Who is involved in Cas Klu? The main members are Brendan Hillier

and Candice Bliss, and contributing artists have included Kosta Theodosis (Amy Meredith, Miami Horror, The Kite String Tangle, Cleopold), Timothy McArtney (Asta, Gang Of Youths) and Kyle Lacko (Tidal Peak). The touring member is David Searston. What style of music and art are you into? Anything different and weird. If it sparks inspiration or a thought pattern I’m into it. What’s your background in performance and the like? I live for performance, it’s a driving force in my life. Art, music, acting — if I can be on stage I go for it. I’ve been creative all my life. Music is my ultimate passion though. It allows me to express my feelings, thoughts and views while being fun and entertaining.

What do you think of the creative scene in Toowoomba? It’s amazing! Underground is the word I’d use to explain it though. Toowoomba has come a long way creatively in the last year and there is a huge following for the arts. People still aren’t aware of the talent we have — artists, actors, musicians, poets, playwrights and incredible creative minds. I’d urge people to get out and find these people. What’s next for Cas Klu? Single release, shows, launch parties and much more! Stay tuned. How can people contact you? Cas Klu has a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/casklu/. If you are a creative type and want to get involved, email brendanhillierproductions@ outlook.com.au.

PERFECT (MIS)MATCH BY MORAG GREALY, FASHION COLUMNIST

A

h weddings, the big day dedicated to proclaiming your love and dressing up in specific ways to prove it. I’m all for a no-rules approach to fashion, but weddings are one of those events that seem to be governed by a multitude of unwritten rules. With so many traditions surrounding nuptials it’s no wonder we’ll grab any chance to flex our creativity muscle. As modern society progresses there’s more and more ways to break free of what’s typically expected when it comes to weddings. And sartorially-wise, it’s mismatched bridesmaids dresses that are really stealing the show right now. Although this trend is nothing new, it’s a welcome departure from the conformity squads of bridesmaids days gone by.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense: how rare is it to find one dress that would suit a group of differing body shapes, skin tones, personal tastes and personalities? The ‘choose your own’ approach to bridesmaid dressing is also a surefire way to relax the bridezilla vibe and allow bridesmaids to have a dress they may actually wear again. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were both part of an eighteen member bridal party recently where bride Cassie Coane allowed her bridesmaids full autonomy in the dress department as long as they revolved around an overarching ‘floral’

theme. As you can see in the image, a clashing group can have just as much impact as a matching one and may provide a good chance to balance an appreciation for wedding tradition while embracing your own individuality.

style | locals Gus, where are you from? I’m originally from Brisbane but have lived in multiple cities due to business such as Limerick in Ireland, Adelaide, Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gold Coast and I lived in Spain as a teenager.

MEET NEW LOCALS AROUND THE REGION

WHO’S NEW IN TOWN Meet Agustin ‘Gus’ Romero, proprietor of Harvey Norman’s Computer and Mobile Communications Superstore Toowoomba — a man with a lot of love for his city and his family

Tell us about your family. I have three amazing boys. Our eldest, Gus Jnr, is 14 and has just started at Grammar. Then there is Will he is six years of age and has also just started Prep at Middle Ridge State School. Last is Cooper, [who is] four-years-old — there is never a dull moment with Cooper. My beautiful wife Cherie is the unsung hero of the family — there is nothing she can’t or won’t do for her family — I’m amazed by her daily. What is your working background? I have done it all — I started working when I was 16 in a bakery then moved onto bar work and cleaning. When I hit the age of 20 I realised I wanted a more fulfilling job so I joined the army and did that for five years. I spent a fair bit of time away with the army and my wife and I agreed we needed a change. That’s when I had the opportunity of joining Harvey Norman and never looked back.

How long have you been in this industry? I have been in IT retail with Harvey Norman coming on to 17 years. What do you think earns success in business? Dedication, drive, and willingness to do the hard yards. For a business to succeed and achieve its goal you must plan for the goal you’re trying to achieve and once you have a plan you have to follow it up with action. If a business has staff you should never ask your staff to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. As a business owner you must know and understand every facet of your business. What do you pride yourself on? Always giving back when I can — no amount or gesture is too small. Also, remaining grounded. What do you love most about Toowoomba? It would have to be the people. The people I have had contact with so far such as staff, customers, business associates and the school community have made our transition to Toowoomba a breeze and extremely welcoming.

MATERIAL GIRL A

key factor when choosing a wedding ring is the metal it’s made out of. For the bride, it is normally determined by what metal her engagement ring is.

GOLD

WHAT IS RHODIUM PLATING?

Rhodium, part of the platinum precious metal group, is used to plate white gold because it is dazzlingly white and mirror-like, whereas white gold can be slightly grey in tone. Rhodium is shiny and cool, almost like chrome but even whiter. It also acts as a protective coating for your ring, enhancing its life span.

PLATINUM AND PALLADIUM

Two popular choices for wedding rings are platinum and palladium, which require rhodium plating. Their natural brilliance makes them the perfect choice for jewellery that lasts pretty much forever.

Palladium has become more popular in recent times because of its budget-friendly price tag.

TITANIUM

Titanium rings have some unique properties — they’re hypo-allergenic, lightweight, corrosion-resistant and strong enough to keep their shape, even when knocked about. For this reason they’re a great choice for those with active lifestyles who don’t want to worry about wear and tear.

6509901af

Prized since prehistoric times, gold is a reliable choice as it doesn’t rust, tarnish or corrode. It also mixes well with other metals. Wedding rings come in 9ct or 18ct gold which can be yellow, white or rose-coloured, depending on your personal tastes. Pure gold, which is 24 carat, is often considered to be too soft for jewellery and requires much more care. An ideal choice for wedding rings is 18ct, which is 75 per cent pure gold and has a richer hue than 9ct (which is 37.5 per cent pure gold). It also tends to retain its good looks better as it ages. One thing to keep in mind is that to

keep your white gold wedding ring looking beautiful, you’ll need to have it periodically plated with rhodium (rhodium plated).

IT ALL STARTS WITH YOU. You know what’s best in your heart— the ring you’ve always wanted. Central Jewellers has the expertise to help you choose the perfect ring you will treasure forever. With a beautiful selection of wedding bands for both men and women—9ct or 18ct, white gold, platinum or palladium, diamonds or engraving— you’ll be sure to find exactly what you want for your special day. Let us guide and inspire you. We can also add some sparkle to what will be the most memorable day of your life, with a range of wedding accessories for the bride and bridal party.

MEDITATE TO BETTER HEALTH M

editation dates backs to ancient times, and throughout the years several different methodologies have been practised across the world. Fast forward a few centuries and what do you get when an ancient practice meets modern science? Cold hard facts! How many times have we heard, “meditation is good for you? Which subconsciously makes us wonder what are the exact benefits and do we even care? Practicing mediation helps affect our moods by decreasing depression, stress, anxiety and symptoms of panic attacks, which we all have become fairly familiar with, but it can also be a great tool to help treat depression in mothers-to-be, as well as increase grey matter concentration in the brain. The benefits continue on for mind and performance by improving our

attention, focus, and ability to work under stress. Giving the individual resilience, emotional intelligence and mental strength. An experimental study conducted at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre suggested that not only will meditation improve your pain threshold but can also relieve pain more effectively than morphine. Meditation is very useful to learn, and there are a variety of different methods to master. Have a look at some apps for some guidance such as The Mindfulness App, Headspace, Calm or Insight Timer. YouTube is also a great way to learn. The benefits for our body and health range widely from lowering blood

pressure, improved immunity, reduced risk of heart diseases and stroke. Mediation can also help ease regular discomfort from asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and even help treat premenstrual syndrome and menopausal symptoms.

BEAUTY BOOTCAMP

MATURE SKIN CARE

No matter how good your makeup artist is on the day you will need to do some prep.

As you age, it becomes more important than ever to look after your skin, as the moisture and elasticity that you once enjoyed can begin to fade. Aged skin is thinner and more fragile, increasing the risk of injuries such as tearing and bruising. When the skin thins, its protective subcutaneous layer, which acts as protection, is lost. You should also keep in mind that aging skin takes longer to bounce back from damage and healing time can be up to four times slower than young skin. To give your skin the best chance of health and longevity, here are some simple steps: Cover up, apply sunscreen and make sure your diet is filled with good nutrients. Adequate fluids and moisture are also important. Drink water regularly and apply moisturiser as your skin becomes more susceptible to dryness. Avoid perfumed soaps or body lotions as these will only dry out your skin. If you notice any irritation which could mean pressure sores, ulcers or split skin, see your doctor.

SKIN

Depending on your skin and your skin concerns, a skin consultation with a trained skin therapist six to 12 months out will set you up for flawless skin. From your consultation a home care regime can be established.

EYEBROWS

If you have sparse or unruly brows, get them into ‘brow bootcamp’ as soon as you say ‘yes’.

SPRAY TAN

Have a trial spray tan a few months prior to the day. Have a spray tan and your makeup trial around the same time to see the finished look.

MAKEUP

Book a trial and do some research. Pinterest is your friend — it gives your makeup artist a starting point.

LASHES

If you are going on a honeymoon, consider having a set of eyelash extensions applied the week of the wedding. You will get a solid three weeks of wear.

ANCIENT BEAUTY WISDOM India’s natural beauty secrets date back more than 5000 years

A

ncient beauty recipes have not only stood the test of time, but are highly effective and beneficial as they are herbal. In Ayurvedic formulations a combination of culinary, medicinal and aromatic herbs, flowers, barks, seeds, wood, roots and naturally occurring minerals are combined together to make pastes, creams and lotions that cleanse, detox, exfoliate and nourish the skin.

BATHING RITUAL

In Ayurveda great importance has always been attached to cleansing. Water is believed to connect the bather with the universe and, as one descends into the realms of water which is as a symbol of purification, removing all evil.

MASSAGE

Body massage using warmed herbal oils

is part of Indian life. Marmas are the primary seat of vayu or vital energy. A marma point massage is relaxing and also alleviates and helps prevent many health problems There are 107 marma points on the body.

AYURVEDIC FACIAL

An Ayurvedic facial begins with a warm herbal scalp massage starting at the brahmand (anatomically the space between the two cerebral hemispheres) or located eight finger widths above the third eye, and then working along the marma points located on the head and neck. Application of nourishing herbal oils to this area calms and strengthens the

brain and nervous system. As part of a facial treatment it helps to increase the fresh supply of oxygen, relaxes the nervous system and improves circulation. A marma point face and neck massage using nourishing herbal creams is followed by steam compress (cold compress for pitta types) preparing the skin for the balancing herbal mask. With 37 marma points alone on the neck and head, it is no surprise that an Ayurvedic facial is deeply relaxing. On completion of the facial the recipient is left to rest and ‘just be’ in relaxed surroundings filled with fragrances from fresh flowers.

style | beauty They can be tough, tedious and expensive, but nevertheless, if you find a great one, they’re absolutely worth it. Here are some of the cold, hard beauty truths that we need to know and understand.

TIPS TO REACHING YOUR BEAUTY PINNACLE

COLD, HARD BEAUTY TRUTHS

O

h yes. There’s some things we love to hear about ourselves, and there are some things we really don’t — and some of them have to do with our beauty regimes.

1. SKINCARE IS EVERYWHERE. Are you jotting this down, friends? Your skincare regime applies to part of skin. Don’t just lather your lovely little cheeks with moisturiser — your decolletage and neck can’t miss out. Keep up your sunscreen and treat your fabulous skin like it deserves, all over! 2. HIGHLIGHTER IS YOUR SMOKING GUN.

For those nights where you saw the sun rise over the hills, be prepared to whip your highlighter out of your back pocket — yes ma’am, you will look like you got a tidy eight hours sleep with this little beauty. Pop some on the inner corner of your eyes (along with concealer under your eyes), and you’re a new woman. 3. GREAT EYEBROWS ARE LIFE.

Seriously, people that don’t nurture their eyebrows ... these are the frames for your face. Give them the respect that they deserve. Find a wonderful eyebrow person and let your lovely brows take their shape — the next challenge will be learning how to fill them! 4. FIND YOUR HAIRDRESSER

SOULMATE.

When you see someone with great hair, ask them who does their hair, because it is an absolute mission to find the perfect hairdresser and when you find them — hold them close. They don’t come easily, or often! The women (and men) that you see wandering around with fabulous hair clearly have a great hairdresser, and they’re usually full of fantastic tips — don’t be afraid to ask them. 5. ALWAYS TREAT YOURSELF. Go to the spa. Get the maincure, get the pedicure, or the facial — no one ever regretted it. You, above anyone else, deserves to be treated every once in a while — the saying ‘your body is your temple’ stands for a reason.

TALKING POINTS ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, HEALTH COACH AND COUNSELLOR

C

ommitting to your loved one in marriage is a life decision that requires one to ensure that they understand what they are entering into. Understanding each other and the expectations of marriage should be well explored prior to committing to each other. Many aspects of life and compatibility should be explored to ensure a smooth transition into married life. One aspect I often see is conflicting health philosophies. Health is an important topic and while one individual enjoys maintains a healthy lifestyle it may not be as important for their partner.

Another point is healthcare providers and treatment for illnesses — one may maintain a allopathic view whereas your partner may hold a strong view in natural methods of treatment. These differences in beliefs can come to crossroads when children are born or critical health issues arise. Therefore it is important for each partner to understand and respect views on health and wellbeing, and if uncomfortable or challenged seek counsel in regards to exploring these differences to ensure there is reconciliation between these opposing views.

SOME TALKING POINTS TO RAISE WITH YOUR PARTNER: ◆ Who will be the families health provider and or practitioners? ◆ Allopathic treatment or natural methods of treatment? ◆ What is your relationship with drugs or alcohol like? ◆ With the current level of engagement in health, will you be okay if this stays the same or changes?

95 YEARS OF SUCCESS C

hange is the word on everyone’s lips in the year St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba proudly celebrates 95 years of service to the communities living in Toowoomba and across the Darling Downs and south west Queensland. While the original main hospital building, which dates back to 1922, is still in use, progress on construction of the latest addition to the campus is surging ahead with the $30 million Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite project now past the half-way point. This major project will add six new state-of-the-art operating theatres, including a special hybrid theatre for interventional cardiology and a new day surgery unit, and is due for completion early in 2018. The hospital chief executive officer Kathryn McKeefry says the project has been an outstanding success to date. “More than 48,000 man hours have gone into the project so far and there have been no reportable incidents — this is an outstanding achievement and testament to, not only the good management of Hutchinson’s Builders, our project builders, but also to the tradespeople who are employed on the project, many of whom are locals,” Kathryn says. “Our new kitchen is now complete — a month ahead of schedule — and while the journey so far has involved change and periods of noise and vibration, the worst is over and the project is still on track for an early completion.”

ST VINCENT’S CELEBRATES 95TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2017 Kathryn says the theatre build isn’t the only major project happening within the walls of St Vincent’s at the moment. “Extensive renovation and refurbishment projects have been occurring concurrently with the build,” she says. “Tenders are out for work on the new 22 bed rehabilitation unit, which will be called St Michael’s, and once this ward is complete work will begin on creating a new cardiac ward in St Luke’s. “The cardiac ward will support a new 24 hour interventional cardiology service, which in turn, will utilise our new hybrid theatre being built as part of the theatre suites.” Kathryn says even more exciting is the news that St Vincent’s Health Australia has approved funding for a feasibility study to scope out a proposed stage two expansion that will add new imaging and emergency centres as well as medical suites, undercover car parking and a new hospital entrance off Herries Street. To mark the 95th anniversary, the hospital is celebrating with a gala event to be held at St Patrick’s Cathedral Centre on Saturday, December 9, 2017.

The hospital invites everyone to join in the celebration. Kathryn said it would be a fun night, with a great special guest — Samuel Johnson, Australian actor, radio presenter, voiceover artist and philanthropist, and also the fabulous Lisa Hunt and the Forever Soul Band for guests to dance the night away. St Vincent’s retired nurses are also organising a big reunion in September to celebrate and reminisce 95 years of service. More than 150 nurses have registered including some who began training in the 1940s and 1950s. “Their memories are of fun and sometimes not-so-fun times, when all nurses lived in strictly-curfewed quarters, were required to pay for any equipment breakages such as glass syringes and thermometers, and performed domestic and health care duties as part of their work shift — all for 15 shillings per week… that’s… $1.50,” Kathryn says. “As we celebrate 95 years, their experiences are a wonderful reflection on how much has changed but also how much remains the same at St Vincent’s.”

Listen to the wishes of the bride and if she is against doing anything too wild or risky, respect her decision — don’t take her to a raunchy club or sky diving. A healthy approach is to have the matron of honour or head bridesmaid sit down with the bride-to-be a week before the arranged night and talk to her about the activities that she deems as acceptable, before picking two or three of these that the majority of people will enjoy.

PHOTO: TALL TIMBER STUDIOS

HOMEGROWN LOVE

BY HIA CHOWDHURY

I

t was the intrigue of beauty that led Liam and Emma to meet. Desperately wishing to meet her, an attempt at printing a document in front of her went awry for Liam. Devising a Plan B, it was when he had filled up his water bottle in the front office when they met through Emma’s mother — Liam’s work colleague. From acquaintances to friends and finally a couple, they realised their love for each other the moment the groom had left to work was when realisation struck — Emma couldn’t bear for them to be apart. Alongside the reddish-orange hues of autumn on April 1 at Gabbinbar Homestead, the couple exchanged their written vows.

The couple had been together for three-and-a-half years before Liam proposed. Liam booked a holiday on the Sunshine Coast for his proposal. “He seemed so nervous before we went out to dinner but I never clicked on until we were ready to walk out the door and he got down on one knee,” Emma says. “Of course, I said yes!” With a classic vintage colour scheme of dusty blue and ivory the couple were surrounded by roses and native foliage. Emma walked down the aisle to Thank You for Loving Me by Bon Jovi. Their musician, Andrzaj Fenner, played some divine acoustic tunes, delighting guests. “Our wedding day was the most

beautiful and memorable day of our life so far,” Emma says. “Autumn is one of the most gorgeous times of the year in Toowoomba and it showed on the day — the weather was stunning [and] our day was full of so much love and laughter — most of our guests had travelled a long way to celebrate with us.” The main highlight of the reception was seeing both the bride and the grooms’ families, as well as close friends celebrating, mingling, dancing and enjoying each other’s company. When asked about the future, the couple explained that they look forward to many years of marriage, and have plans on travelling, renovation, adventures in the future and children.

ext month Palm Lake Group will open its largest and most luxurious clubhouse at Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle. The Country Club will include ten-pin bowling, cinema, indoor and outdoor pools, library, craft, billiards and much more. It will also be the second Palm Lake Resort in the country to feature a milon gym — which is one of the most technologically advanced electronic fitness training systems in the world. Palm Lake Resort national sales

manager Sue Baldwin is excited about the launch of the new clubhouse as she believes it will enhance the residents’ luxurious lifestyles. “The Country Club will be the vibrant social hub of the resort once it opens in October,” Ms Baldwin says. “We have purposely constructed this clubhouse larger so that it can fit all of the luxury facilities that Palm Lake Resort residents integrate into their daily lives.” Clubhouses play a crucial role in the Palm Lake Resort lifestyle at every one of the 21 Palm Lake Group locations across the east coast — with many social and resident interest groups relying on clubhouse facilities to run their weekly activities. The facilities also keep residents active and help them make the most out of the best years of their life.

Heating your water... what’s best?

W

hat do taps, toilets and hot water systems all have in common? That’s right, water, and if you buy it in plastic it’s more expensive per litre than petrol. We are lucky in Queensland as the Government has mandated that all tap ware, shower heads and toilets must be up to a minimum Wels Star rating to help ensure water conservation. The quality of tap ware can vary greatly — brands like Argent & Hansa come with up to a 15-year manufacturer warranty, whereas some of the supermarket brands have virtually no warranty at all. Hot water systems are another story. There is a massive range of different types of hot water systems and if used in the right situation will all make your water hot. Some can even save you money. The least cost-efficient are the old electric storage type systems, as these systems maintain the water temperature in their tanks by running regularly. You can reduce this running cost by connecting to an off-peak tariff. A wrongly positioned solar hot water system can be almost as expensive to run as the old electric storage systems. If the optimum water temperature is not reached using the sun’s energy, the system will then have to finish the job by running on its electric booster. Solar, evacuated tubes, heat pumps and continuous flow gas hot water systems can all be very efficient if used in the right application.

Solar panels or evacuated tubes should be in a northorth facing position. It is also important to ensure the panels or tubes are not shaded by trees or neighbouring buildings or you will be back running on your booster to heat your water. Instead of an automatic booster you can have a manual booster installed, putting you in charge of when you feel your water temperature needs a boost. Heat pumps work on the similar principle to an airconditioner, compressing air to get heat exchange. This energy is used to heat your water. Continuous flow gas hot water systems are very good, if you have a large distance between bathrooms, ensuites, kitchens or laundries. Heat is lost through your pipes while water is travelling the distance from tank to outlet. Sometimes it is cheaper and more efficient to install two small continuous flow gas hot water systems. With continuous flow systems you only pay for the gas you are using when the hot water is turned on. These types of systems do not have a storage tank. I hope this information helps you as there is lots to consider when choosing a hot water system that is right for your application. Always remember, the cheapest to buy may not be the cheapest to run.

GARDENING ON A BUDGET It’s not impossible to garden on the cheap - here’s some easy tips

B

eautiful spring has arrived and it’s time to make your garden a central hub, if you haven’t already. That’s right — an alive, green hub. So if your plants are looking a little drab or potentially even lifeless after a particularly cool winter, it’s time to whip your garden back into shape and give it the vigour it deserves. However, there are some expenses that come with gardening — you mightn’t think it, but things like gardening tools, fertiliser, various plants and the like all add up. So, here are a few tricky tips to save you some dollars when making your garden glorious this spring.

GROW FROM SEEDS

A large pack of seeds is a lot cheaper than going and buying seedlings. Sowing seeds directly into a garden bed takes no more time in the long run than planting seedlings.

TAKE CUTTINGS

Most perennials, shrubs, vines and many trees can be grown from cuttings. If a friend, family member or neighbour has a plant that you’re after, try and rally up a cutting, pot it up and after a few weeks or months, you should see roots and leaves growing.

REPURPOSE AND UPCYCLE

Plants are quite costly on there own, but once you involve planter boxes, pavers and the like, it can escalate quickly.

So why not jump on board with the current trend of

upcycling? Wooden pallets and fallen logs are great planter boxes, old ladders can serve as trellises — the options are endless. Get online and do your research, and you might be surprised by the amount of things you have lying around the house that could be put to use in your garden.

Treat your home to beautiful décor, lighting d or find the perfect gift... We bring dreams to life by delivering the world’s best and most loved client experiences.

THREE GREAT WINTER READS

ON THE BIG SCREEN

HAMPSTEAD T

here is a revealing moment midway through Hampstead. Diane Keaton’s character has a good sniff of the hirsute tramp played by Brendan Gleeson and concludes that he smells “much better” than she anticipated. The film is a romantic comedy about the “older” generation. Keaton plays Emily Walters, an American whose husband recently died. She is supposedly in a very bad place: her finances are in a mess, the roof of her very upmarket Hampstead mansion flat is leaking, she has realised her late husband was a love rat, and she has no professional skills, or at least “none that matter”, and runs a charity shop. Donald “Tramp” (Gleeson) is a loner who lives in his surprisingly homely shack on the edge of the Heath. He grows his own vegetables and catches fish from the ponds, and the developers are trying to have him evicted from his north London Eden but he ignores their letters and writs. Emily has taken to spying on him, watching him through her high powered binoculars from her attic bathing in the waters as if he is Mellors the gamekeeper and she is Hampstead’s answer to Lady Chatterley. Inevitably, they meet, and once she has established that he has satisfactory standards of personal hygiene, they fall in love. The film is loosely inspired by the life of Harry Hallowes, who really did live on the Heath and managed to claim squatter’s rights when attempts were made to evict him. It culminates in an absurd court case which has more than a hint of Gilbert and Sullivan about it.

This new biography follows the journey of ballad superstar Adele — surprisingly from the gritty streets of Tottenham, London, to fame. Best-selling biographer Sean Smith interviewed those close to Adele, as well as researching, to reveal there is much more to this superstar than previously thought. From complex family relationships to mourning the untimely death of her grandfather, as well as an apparent unpromising future in this gang-ravaged area of London, Adele certainly rose above her circumstances. A series of unhappy romantic relationships supplied fodder for her song-writing in those record-breaking albums we all know well. This biography is an uplifting and intimate story of a woman with one of the most powerful singing voices in the world.

Style Artist Jane Donaldson chats to Style

Tell us a little about yourself I live and work on a little hobby farm nestled in the bush near Warwick. I work full time as an artist and along with my husband Ben we own Jane Donaldson Art Gallery. We love ferreting around our veggie patch and flower garden, tending to our animals, messing up the kitchen and huddling around the backyard bonfire with our kiddies. Describe your style? There’s a few basic premises at the heart of every one of my paintings – imagination, colour and stories. I’ve discovered that art is an antenna for feeling, it’s a receptacle for memory and it’s a dandelion wish for the future, and for me it’s a way to explain and record what I see and feel. These bring me to where I am today - a painter and maker

of colourful, whimsical stories dug out of my imagination, observations and musings. What inspires you? Absolutely everything! The rhythm in music makes my brushes bounce on the canvas, melody has shape, stories are full of colours, spoken words make pictures in my head, smell has texture. Remembered dreams have fantastical storylines and impossible happenings. When did you start painting/drawing? I have always loved making things and can’t remember a time when I wasn’t doodling or creating something. I started delving into painting when Belle, our youngest, started school in 2008. How has it evolved and what has influenced this? Beginning as a hobby artist, I learnt and developed my style without

formal qualifications or study - just a determination to create. Why do you enjoy painting? I enjoy the way in which art making forms a funnel for external stimulus to mix with those things I feel and think and imagine. What are some of the highlights/ favourite moments of your artistic life? Because of my preoccupation with people and relationships, painting allows me to connect and tell not only my own stories but those of my clients also. It’s a highlight when a client invites me into their life and family story and trusts me to tell it through paint or collage or when someone buys my art, saying, ‘your story is mine also’. What do you like about Toowoomba? I love Toowoomba for its green gardens.

MEETING THE ROOF OF THE WORLD

BY JESS BUCHAN

A

t the start of the year I made a goal to climb to Mt Everest Base Camp. Without much prior planning or training I was on a plane to Nepal. My journey began in the crazy chaotic streets of Kathmandu and before I knew it, I was en-route to see the highest mountain in the world. After surviving what’s known as the ‘deadliest flight in the world’ to Lukla in Nepal, the next couple of days seemed to be a breeze. We hiked beside a flowing, glacial river and got sore necks from constantly looking up to the mountains. Passing donkeys, yaks and sherpas all carrying weights far beyond their strength, it seemed pathetic to complain about the weight of our small day packs. As we trekked higher, the landscape changed from green to grey and the trees that couldn’t survive the high altitude were replaced by more hardy shrubs. The thin air started to take a toll and every step was that little bit harder. Prayer wheels and flags adorned the trail and locals went about their daily life as we passed.

I made friends with every dog, donkey and yak along the way. The inner country girl in me felt a sting of pain at their ribs poking out as they pained to carry their heavy loads. By Lobuche at 4910 metres above sea level, the area was desolate. It was like we’d stepped on another planet, just a cluster of houses and millions of monochrome coloured pebbles and ice. The rocky trail made for an ankle-breaking walk but provided a more dramatic and unique view than the forest we’d been hiking through previously. As we hiked on, dwarfed by the looming snow-capped mountains, it suddenly felt very real. Here I was, high in the Himalayas, feeling like an amateur compared to past climbers who had gone beyond base camp to reach the roof of the world. Finally eight days later, base camp day came. A two hour hike down towards the Khumbu Glacier and we were there. A colourful splatter of prayer flags on an icy rock was all to show of our efforts. It was surreal to think we’d walked this far just to see this.

Mt Everest sat behind two mountains but her peak was hidden by cloud. Not to be dismayed, we still had one more chance to see a clear view of Mt Everest. The following morning we started hiking at 4am in hope of reaching the top of Kala Patthar by sunrise. The thin air, icy temperature and early start made every step a huge effort but as dawn washed away the night sky and the dark silhouette of Mt Everest came into view, a wave of energy pushed me to the top. At 5612 metres above sea level we looked down as the morning light filled the valley below us, the view nothing short of Himalayan perfection. I stood with my fellow trekkers in awe of the mountains before me, very proud at what we’d achieved yet humbled by the enormity of the mountain range looking down at us. Hiking to Everest Base Camp had been tough and testing, but worth every step. Follow Jess’s various adventures on Facebook, A Blonde and Her Passport, and Instagram, @ablondeandherpassport.

FINANCIAL ADVICE FOR THE COUPLE-TO-BE BY MANAGING DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS, LEANNE MCDONALD

S

ince so many women will be tying the knot over the next few spring and summer months, it’s a great time for me to offer some financial advice. So what should you know about finances before you get married? Generally my responses are very similar — if you are getting married there are three rather straightforward points: brides and grooms-to-be need to communicate about finances, consider their financial options and continue to be financially independent. ■ Communicate: You and your fiancé need to talk openly about finances. Please don’t wait until the last minute to get answers to important questions, and please don’t be shy about the topics you discuss. Think about it this way — would you start a company with a friend if you were unsure about

their personal finances or how they handled money? Of course not! Make sure you understand each other’s spending habits, current credit card debt, student loans, future plans, how your accounts will — or won’t — be blended after the wedding and so on. ■ Consider: As in, consider financial options. For example, years ago, pre-nups (short for prenuptial agreements) were only associated with older, affluent and/or celebrity couples, but that’s simply not the case these days. By using a pre-nup, both the husband-to-be and the wife-to-be can decide certain financial issues in advance. Seek some legal advice about binding financial arrangements.

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

■ Continue: to be financially independent... at least somewhat. Part of the romance of getting married involves sharing your hopes, dreams and life with the person you love. However, for your marriage to be successful, and for you to maintain your own financial security, you must preserve a measure of financial independence. Start your marriage off on the right foot and remember the three ‘Cs’.

No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. We have partnered with AMP, Australia’s largest financial planning network, to give you access to some of the most reliable and competitive financial products and solutions while maintaining the friendly personal attention you only get from a locally-owned and operated business. We will take the time to talk with you and listen to your goals and objectives, then we can develop a personalised plan to help you to:

THE ENGAGING FACTS Best Wilson Buckley’s solicitor Samantha Iwers gives some insight into engagements and de facto relationships

W

hen we look at the old colloquialism that the engagement ring should be worth about three months’ salary, you can’t help but wonder what happens to the ring if the wedding doesn’t go ahead. Firstly, if the couple are found to be in a de facto relationship, the Family Law Act will apply. For the purpose of property settlement, a de facto relationship exists when the couple meets one of the following four gateway criteria: ◆ The duration of the relationship was at least two years ◆ The couple have a child from their relationship ◆ The relationship is or was registered, or ◆ A party has made significant contributions to the property or finances of their partner. In circumstances where a de facto

relationship exists, an engagement ring that holds greater than sentimental value would form part of the property pool. When considering how the property pool is distributed, the Court will take into consideration a number of factors including the length of the relationship, each parties’ financial and non-financial contributions, the future needs of each party, and whether the proposed division is just and equitable. If the couple are not found to be in a de facto relationship, the Family Law Act would not apply, and the principles summarised in the matter of Papathanasopoulos v Vacopoulos (which dealt with an engagement ring worth $15,250) would guide the approach as follows: 1. If a woman receives an engagement ring in contemplation of marriage and refuses to fulfil the conditions of the gift,

she must return the ring 2. If a man refuses to carry out his promise of marriage, he cannot demand the return of the engagement ring; and 3. If the parties mutually consent to the engagement ending, and there is no agreement otherwise, the engagement ring must be returned. The outcome seems to turn on who breaks off the engagement, which is clearly inconsistent with the Family Law approach of ‘no-fault divorce’ that would apply if the couple were in a de facto relationship, or were to actually tie the knot but subsequently separate.

Nestled among 250 acres of rolling hills and gardens, the heritage-listed mansion provides a stunning wedding venue making it the perfect “something old”, blended with modern facilities for your “something new”. Whether you dream of hosting a grand formal event or a small intimate gathering, all you need in one beautiful wedding venue is here. CRISPY SKIN PORK BELLY

SCENE The Bull and Barley Inn is a wonderful dining experience in rural Cambooya, 20 minutes drive from the Toowoomba CBD. BY CLARE STANDFAST

With exceptional food fitting the grandeur of the 1900s era building along with excellent, friendly service, the Bull and Barley Inn was a delightful dining experience.

SLOW ROASTED, TWICE COOKED SERVED WITH PRAWNS AND SCALLOPS

When trying to pick what to eat from his delicious menu, I asked owner and publican Bruce Dell, “so, what’s good Bruce?” and he said, “well, the pork belly is pretty impressive.” As a devout pork belly fan, I must say — Bruce was right. I was extremely impressed. There was a gentle crackle under my knife when I hit the skin of the pork belly, slicing easily into the beautiful cut of meat. It was tender and soft on the inside, with a lovely crackle on the outside — exactly what I was after. The moreish, soft prawns and scallops skewered on top were seared perfectly, with a gentle tang. A refreshing yet hearty salad complemented excellently-cooked pork belly, with beer battered chips a filling and welcome pub VISIT AT 61 ETON ST, favourite. CAMBOOYA FOR A DELICIOUS MEAL

PANCETTA WRAPPED CHICKEN BREAST

WITH A CREAMY PESTO STUFFING

What a tantalising and refreshing dish! Dancing on my tastebuds, the pancetta was a flavoursome twist around the tender, juicy chicken. The generous, crispy pancetta wrapping the moist chicken was perfectly complemented by a wonderful basil pesto stuffing, which was a refreshing bang of flavour, tying together a number of wonderful elements to the meal. Accompanied by a creamy mash and beautifully done vegetables, the Bull and Barely Inn truly raised the bar and created a unique, modern and fresh taken on country dining.
