STYLE NOTE Welcome W

elcome to the April edition of Style We started putting this edition of Style together a few weeks ago, and what a different world it was! Since then so much has changed but we’ve tried to keep our stories relevant in an ever-changing landscape. Our focus is on “preloved” fashion to show that through upcycling and repurposing we can all help reduce waste. You’ll find a celebration of young Toowoomba designers who work in this space on page 6 and some local intel on page 8. April is usually a busy month with school holidays, Easter and Anzac Day. Some things don’t change and we hope you enjoy the holidays – even if it means camping in the backyard! Easter is about rebirth and we know our community will rise again but let’s help it along by supporting our local and smaller family businesses. Anzac Day is deeply important to this country and even if we can’t attend Dawn Services we can still honour the young Australians who sacrificed their lives for us. Have a look at the exhibitions on the Australian War Memorial website. Lest we forget. Stay safe and please do everything you can to stay healthy. The Style Team

DESIGNING WITH A PASSION Sustainable fashion

BY KATHERINE SAMPSON

Tace Doherty has had a love of sewing all her life, and for her it’s more than just creating clothes for the sake of it. Tace is one designer who is putting the ethics of sustainable fashion into reality and creating clothes that sell within hours.

O

chra Vintage is a fashion label owned by self-taught designer Tace Doherty, a young woman with a blossoming passion for zero waste, ethically friendly, sustainable clothing. Tace says it all began with her obvious love of sewing and having a mother as a seamstress definitely helped. “What really got me going to actually start a business was the fact that my aunty passed away, and that was a traumatic thing for me, but I sort of just had this realisation that she never got to do what she wanted to in life. “She sewed and she made clothes, but she never got to actually get out and do that, so it’s sort of like an ode to her,” Tace says. Ochra is now Tace’s way of not only doing what she loves herself but what her aunty loved, and now for her. Tace began her journey just over a year ago by thrifting patterns for fifty-cents at the op-shop. Shortly after Tace met fashion designer Camilla Meise of Camilla Jade Fashion. “I met Camilla and she is just a pattern expert, so I started moving away almost from just op-shop patterns to making my own,” Tace says. When she began creating her own patterns she investigated zero waste pattern techniques and how to create clothing with as little excess material as possible. “I started to cut my waste and reduce my consumption and my pollution as much as I could, but I found when I was using just normal basic standard patterns you had off cuts and all that kind of stuff so I thought, A, what am I going to do with this and B, this is not the greatest thing to be a sustainable brand.” She started off with an op-shop pattern of a top and moved the pattern around until she had found a way to cut the material without having any off-cuts. “It’s hard, because you can go out and make a nice garment, but to make it without any off-cuts and if there are, finding a way to make something out of them,” Tace says. “Sometimes I make scrunchies or, I like to stuff cushions with the off-cuts and just repurposing it all.” The talented Toowoomba designer’s primary focus is her sustainable vision of fashion and Tace understands that there is a lot more than just repurposing and reducing waste. “I’ve done quite a lot of research; I went back to googling the definition of sustainability and what it means. “There’s so many aspects to it; there’s like eco fashion which addresses how the garments are affecting the environment then you’ve got slow fashion, which is slowing down of the seasons like summer and winter,” Tace says. “There’s also ethical fashion, which is also addressing how the people who are making those garments are being paid and treated, so for me, that’s my definition of sustainability.” When it came for Tace to apply these values to her own business practice she really tries to address each sustainable aspect. Tace makes everything herself, and so knows her limits and if she is pushing herself to create and designing clothes that can be worn any time of year and respecting the slow fashion virtue. Camilla Meise has even found Tace’s practise rubbing off onto her own designs. “I feel like her passion really shines through all her work and shines through her stories her social media and affects people around her,” Camilla says. “Everyone else sees this amazing passion and want to know why and how and how they can help and how can they change their lifestyles to actually ensure slow fashion is a thing. “I feel like Tace makes it so like simple and straightforward so that anyone can do it. V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

“She’s taught me so much like reusing beeswax, how to make my own candles, how to do my own plant dying, how do you up cycle fabrics and so much more.” When it came to the name it didn’t come easily to Tace and it required a bit of thought. Tace came across the word “ochre” but was in a bind as a lot of other people had already gone with that name. She loved the idea that Ochre is a natural plant material that indigenous Australians used as a paint and dye. Tace played around with the word and changed the lettering to have what is now her business Ochra Vintage. The vintage part of the name is still a work in process for Tace as she finds it hard to pin down the precise definition of the word. “It’s anything that’s old, but then there’s so many definitions in fashion, vintage prom dresses and all of that kind of style. “By my definition, I feel like vintage almost has to have a date and I feel like vintage is anywhere from the 70s, 80s backwards. “That includes the 20s, with the swing dresses, all that kind of stuff that I class as vintage as well. “But then there’s the stuff that moves a little bit more into like the 70s, so the high waisted, flared jeans. “It’s hard because now everyone I find is just slapping a label on things and calling it vintage,” Tace says emphasising that these garments need to have a bit of character too. As far as the business side of things are going for 24-year-old designer it seems clothes are being made and sold on the same day. Tace runs her own social media (@ochravintage) and Etsy store (ochravintage.etsy.com) and with such a healthy outlook on fashion, the garments seem to sell themselves. As for her future, all we can say is that it looks bright and bountiful and we hope to see more of Tace in Toowoomba’s fashion industry and on the people who want the same healthy fashion industry. WARDROBE THERAPY Save, money, time and clothes BY ALLY MARTELL

M

argaret Adam draws her inspiration from a simpler time; a more resourceful time and a less wasteful time. “In the 1950s an average woman owned around 20 items of clothing, today that same woman would own hundreds of items and yet still only wear 20 pieces regularly! “Many women today are overwhelmed with what’s in their wardrobes but they struggle to cull,” she said. “That’s where I can help. I have an eye for what suits body shapes and colouring so I can help with the culling process. I can also advise on how to alter garments to make them wearable again.” Now here’s where Margaret’s other skill set comes into play. She and her four sisters grew up with a mother who was a “magnificent” dressmaker, so they were always inspired to make, alter and mend their garments. Margaret later became a sewing teacher at TAFE and now has her own private sewing school at Mt Lofty. “I teach my clients how to make clothing alterations themselves,” she said. “They learn to turn dresses into tunics, how to lengthen garments, how to restructure a shape with darts or change the sleeves. They do really well even the absolute beginners. “It makes sense to me that if they’re going to be regularly altering garments in the same way to suit their body shape, then it’s a useful skill for them to have.”

OPPORTUNITY Practical shopping Thrift stores are just about everywhere, you need only know where to look. We asked a couple of ladies why they choose to shop this way, and it might even make you want to check it out. SERENA CLARK - 27

BRIDGET TREASURE - 23

I like the atmosphere of them (opshops). It’s a peaceful shopping experience and you don’t have that cold retail feel when you go inside. These clothes I bought from a few different stores, but knew that I could alter them after I got them. The top is a WLane shirt, which is a really pricey but nice brand when new, and it was quite long, not really my style at all. I had already grabbed the shorts and wanted something to match, so I just cut the shirt myself; I mean it was only $3 so I didn’t feel bad cutting it up.

It’s cheap vintage revival, I also like the smell of it, it’s weirdly good. It’s easier than going into six or seven shops looking for different styles because they (op-shops) just have it all in the one spot. I’ve worn this top almost everyday since I bought it last week.

St Vincent de Paul Society Polo - $2

ASHLEY SHAW - 22 I won’t buy anything over $10, the reason I go op-shopping is to save money on clothes, I don’t shop brand new unless I need something in particular. You can really find some good stuff, you just need to know how to look, this shirt is Jeanswest. Lifeline Skirt- $3, Shirt - $7 TCHE01Z01ST - V1

NIFTY FINDS Thrift store edition Toowoomba is packed full of secondhand thrift stores, and they’re a lot bigger than you would expect. You can find anything and everything from fridges and light fittings to gorgeous bric-a-brac and even stunning clothes, jewellery and shoes. We visited two of Toowoomba’s largest Lifeline stores to see what we could find; and we were not disappointed.

T

here were a few garments that caught our eye. We found this navy blue, vintage, button up, felt coat. It looks perfect for an evening.

We found these beautiful heels hidden away at the back of the shelf, and look barely worn at all. It’s important to remember foot hygiene though, so if you’re going shoe shopping at Lifeline, bring socks and clean out the shoes when you get home.

Endless cases of jewellery were on display at both stores, a few eye catchers for us were these beautifully beaded earrings, the colours were vibrant and fancy, but could be dressed down for a casual event. There were more bracelets than you could imagine, with such an exciting selection we even felt stacking them would be a beautiful accessory to a look. There were also plenty of broaches, you might not think too much of the broach but they can go on anything and add that bit of bling you were missing.

Get a New Look for Less at a Lifeline ‘Clothing Super Store”

There was also an intricate selection of vintage bric-a-brac and everything from crystal ware, to ceramics and even this beautiful brass cocktail set, the engraving on the pieces was so delicate and precise it’s a wonder why anyone gave it up in the first place. V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

There were so many hats, and even fascinators! It’s a great idea to check out the op-shop before a race day because an ordinary facinator, new, can cost upwards of $40. The visors and hats we found were in great condition as it seems they’ve been worn for an event and donated to help someone else's outfit in the future. Bags were also plentiful, we found this lovely straw satchel which is on trend right now too. Its internal lining is mint condition.

FASHION Rock the oval BY JESSICA KRAMER THIS MONTH: THE OVAL

T

his is possibly the least well-known body shape, but it’s by no means less lovely. Typically, the oval shape includes an undefined, wide waist and full bust. Women with this figure will also have narrow hips, a shorter neck and full face, with a flat rear end and slender legs. As usual with dressing any body shape, the aim is to create a balanced figure with your clothes. For the oval shape, this means creating a waist that is more defined and playing up your amazing legs. At the most basic level, pick outfits that add curves and fullness to your hips and buttocks, and taper the waist. Blessed with fabulous legs, you can wear almost any skirt length – the only one to avoid is an extremely short skirt as it can make you look top-heavy. On your top half, you’ll want to pick shirts and necklines that taper your body and define your waist. Think square- and scoop-necks, belted midsections, tailored button-down shirts, and wrap styles. Tops and jackets that flare at the hip will add fullness to that part of your body, and most styles with this feature will also include a tapered middle section – win, win! Shirts with a belt will also add curves to your waist. Bottoms can be a little more complex: you want to add width to your hips without making the waist wider, but also show off your legs. Embellished or pronounced pockets on pants are great for this, as the waistline can remain slender while the hips get extra bulk (plus, what woman can refuse some decent pockets?). Full or wide-legged, flowy pants work great on you, as do flared skirts. Flowy skirts will also give the illusion of wider hips. To taper the middle of the body, pick bottoms that are mid-rise and have a wide waistband. For dresses, you’ll want to combine tips for shirts and bottoms.

WE LIVE IN EXTRAORDINARY TIMES A FEW WORDS FROM THE TOOWOOMJBA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE COVID-19 is and will continue to have a direct impact on small businesses, the business community generally and on our daily lives. We welcome the Australian Government’s second $66.1 billion stimulus package and acknowledge the State Government’s initial $27.25 million package. We support the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland who are holding free webinars to help small businesses understand and apply for assistance from these packages. The Toowoomba Chamber is continuing to advocate at all levels of government for small business. We want the next Queensland Government stimulus packages to include a freeze on payroll tax and state fees and charges like motor vehicle registrations. At the local level, we have asked for a freeze on any local government levies and charges, which will free up a substantial amount of cash flow for businesses and protect jobs.

We will endeavour to connect businesses with latest updates and information through our digital platforms and we will work with local businesses and landlords on reducing rents or passing on real government savings to tenants. We will continue to work and collaborate with local agencies such as the: ■ Toowoomba Surat Basin Enterprise to support the bring forward new major infrastructure projects to deliver local jobs, faster. ■ Queensland Government officers to see what we can do collectively to support local business, job security and job opportunities. ■ Toowoomba Regional Council officers on what local initiatives can be implemented to provide economic relief. COUTURE Second hand BY KATHERINE SAMPSON

O

wning one ethical designer boutique is one thing, but to have a hand in three sustainable fashion brands brings a whole new meaning to being sustainable. Anna Sillett has worked in fashion retail for over ten years and use to find herself ehavily contributing the fast fashion cycle. “I was buying a new outfit for every time I went out, which at the time was every weekend because fast fashion was cheap,” Anna says. “Over time, I found my wardrobe getting bigger and bigger with stuff I no longer wore. “ As I got older, I realised I desperately needed to change my ways and I guess I wanted to make-up for my over consuming.” Although Anna has always found herself receiving hand-me-down clothes, being a one of four daughters, loves op shopping and claims to have a major thrifter of a father, it wasn’t until she and her husband volunteering in Cambodia with Connect Cambodia that she had a realisation. “I wanted to do something more purpose driven with my passion for fashion,” she says. Apart from doing her general part by using keep cups and reusable water bottles and recycling, Anna wanted to reduce the impact that she was having as a fashion retailer. Anna began doing this by creating a website called alabstadoll.com that sells vintage and preloved clothing and accessories which don’t just help break the fast fashion cycle, but donates half the profits to charities and support workers in the developing countries who are exploited by the fashion industry. But the 31-year-old business owner didn’t stop there, Anna teamed up with a friend, Lilli Peak and together they launched Toowoomba’s very own fashion market. “Toowoomba Fashion Market is where Toowoomba locals can hire stalls to sell their preloved clothing and accessories to help break the fast fashion cycle. “I really want to get the community around me in a more environmentally friendly way,” Anna says. Lastly, Anna most commonly know endeavour, Ivy Designer Collections, a store she took over in March last year after studying fashion design and technology at TAFE. Anna says that the store was always sustainable minded, always trying to stock garments made from natural fabrics. “We also stock international brands and some incredible Aussie made & designed brands as well,” she said. But be prepared to find it’s current doors closed soon as Anna moves the racks to a new boutique location under the new Oaks Hotel complex on Ruthven Street. In her own life Anna has found herself becoming more conscious when she buys new clothes. “I keep my wardrobe at a minimum and re-wear a lot of my pieces because that’s what clothes are made for,” she says. “I only buy clothing if I really need it and if I do, then I swap out, donate or sell something from my already existing wardrobe to make room for it. Doing this helps Anna keep her wardrobe to a minimum and not over consume. Mixing up her garments are some ways Anna rejuvenates her wardrobe, by combining finds from op shops with newer, ethical pieces from Ivy. “I find new pieces can make older pieces in your wardrobe come back to life, like an old button up with new shoes or pants,” she says. “I want people to be wise when choosing garments and to consider what you already have in your wardrobe. “Buy less, buy quality, choose well and make your garments last.” V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

CAKE Is it really a celebration without cake? At birthdays, weddings and anniversaries we come together in a sublime moment of shared sugary indulgence and we LOVE it. How cakes look (and taste) is part of the ceremony which is why cake decorating has evolved into a highly skilled, highly creative wonderland of possibilities.

T

oowoomba has an extraordinarily bright and successful cake decorating community, and in the last ten years, mostly due to the mentoring of Mary Reid, one of the industry’s most lauded, most enthusiastic and most loved decorators. Her recently published book, Caution Wedding Cake on Board, gives us a peek into the close-knit, very sweet community of cake decorators. It is somewhat autobiographical (from a cake perspective); trade secrets are revealed (occasionally) and there are sensational recipes to follow (in a separate booklet). But mostly, it is highly entertaining, informative and educational account of Mary’s 50 years in the cake business. Mary Reid knew what she wanted to do with her ‘cake’ life from the age of six! When most of us were making mud pies Mary was triple sifting flour to make cake batter for the family business, Reid’s Store in Ingham. Mary’s Mum was her first teacher, she then did an 18 hour course at the Ingham TAFE and from there has been mentored by some talented and respected decorators including Mrs Fulton in Ingham and the late Heather Mills in Brisbane. THE SCARY SIDE Mary’s stories include the good, the bad and the terrifying side of cake decorating. Some of her most compelling yarns tell of the near misses, the cake catastrophes that make your heart beat faster until a hero saves the day. There are awkward moments when cakes are left on tables and devoured by pets; when cakes are damaged during delivery on rough roads and of course there are the last minute cakes when grooms forget to place their order until the day before the wedding. In all cases, Mary comes to the rescue (I think she might have a cape). THE BUSINESS Being passionate about a craft is one thing, turning it into a successful business is another. Mary Reid certainly managed both and between 2004 and 2018 she attended 60 wedding expos, hosted 900 free cake tastings and delivered 1200 wedding cakes. For her efforts she was an Australian Bridal Industry Awards (ABIA) finalist for 12 years and was the state winner in 2012. THE NEXT GENERATION In 2004, after many years as a decorator, Mary established a cake decorating school in Highfields where she taught 270 classes to 400 students and hosted 10 international tutors. She also conducted five international cake decorating tours so that her students could expand their knowledge even more. It’s through her students that Mary’s legacy continues. Many students now have their own cake decorating businesses and, like Mary, they make our lives a little brighter. GIVING BACK Creatives tend to be a generous lot and that includes cake decorators. Mary continues to give back to the community and will donate a percentage from the proceeds of her book, to Blush Cancer Care in Toowoomba.

Note: the launch of Caution Wedding Cake on Board was to be a festival of cakes with tasting tables and more. Sadly, like so many other events at this time, the launch had to be postponed. Caution Wedding Cake on Board is now available for purchase from The Party Hut in Toowoomba . TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, April 3, 2020

HIGH BROW OPTIONS On fleet “KNOW THE FORMULA FOR SHAPING YOUR OWN BROWS: THERE IS A STARTING POINT, A PEAK AND AN END POINT WHICH VARY DEPENDING ON FACIAL STRUCTURE.” RACHELLE AT CEC

Eyebrows define, frame and enhance your facial features so it’s important to get them right. We asked eyebrow specialist, Rachelle, at Cosmetic Elegance Clinic (CEC) for advice on the latest treatments for creating beautiful brows. TATTOOING Tattooing is great for those who have thinning brows, those who want to enhance their shape and those who do not have eyebrows at all (ie from Alopecia). As we age our brow hairs fall out and our eyebrows look patchy and thinner. Tattooing is a popular option for creating the illusion of thicker brows it’s also great for those who want to have perfectly shaped brows all the time. Eyebrow tattoos will last for several years but will gradually fade. Do your research when selecting cosmetic tattoo artists. If you want to modify your tattooed brows (maybe you think they too dark or the wrong shape), CEC does not recommend having them tattooed over with skin-tone ink, this only compounds the issue. If you don’t like your tattooed brows they can be lasered off, just like any other tattoo, and the brows redone. Laser tattoo removal over the brow does not affect hair-growth because it is a different spectrum to lasers used in hair removal. LAMINATING This is the process of straightening the eyebrow hairs using a solution to manipulate the direction of hair growth. This can give the appearance of microbladed brows, or just tame unruly or curly eyebrows. Results can last up to eight weeks.

EYEBROW PENCILS AND POWDERS I prefer powder to pencilling as it gives a softer more natural look to the brow as opposed to the sharp line of a pencil. WAXING AND SUGARING Personal preference plays a part here, for both client and beauty therapist. At CEC we wax, sugar and tweezer to sculpt and shape as necessary. Waxing and sugaring will remove fluffy hairs under the brow, even if you don’t have much to define. It is amazing how a good brow wax can enhance facial features.

BROW TINTING Tinting lasts approximately two weeks and gradually fades out naturally to your original colour. This treatment is for anyone wanting some extra colour in their brows, for fair hairs, or to cover up unwanted greys. There are no rules about colour, but a beauty therapist would take the clients natural colouring/ complexion into consideration. Some people still have their brows tinted with eyebrow tattoo. The tattoo is on the skin, underneath the hair so tinting will colour the hair to complement the tattoo.

ustainability is a broad spectrum of disciplines within the fashion industry and focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future generations needs. This entails three key pillars which are economics, environmental, and social needs. Sustainable fashion can also fall into slow fashion, ethical fashion, up-cycling, thrifting, smart textiles/patterns and eco-fashion directory, all these aspects incorporate both small and big changes you can make each day to be more sustainable.

2. 1.

RESEARCH BRANDS Always look at the finer print because some brands might say they are both sustainable and ethical, but, always double check with The Ethical Fashion report and what wording they are using around their sustainable practices. I would recommend these Australian Brands that are trying to be sustainable and ethical in practices: Spell Bryon Bay, Nagnata, ELK The Label, Tigerlily, Salt Gypsy, KITX, Citizen Wolf, The Social Outfit, Vege Threads, SISTA OF JAC, Organic Crew, Ginger & Smart and Saroka. Some of the larger mainstream brands like ASOS, H&M, Nobody Denim and Kookai have also shown that they are making efforts to be more sustainable and have ranges out there for the consumer’s choice so as a last resort keep them in mind. BUY SECOND HAND AND THRIFT Thrifting can sometimes be a huge task to take on if you don’t have a game plan. I recommend that you alway have a list of what you need/want to buy so you look specifically for those items and always look out for quality of the fabric material and quality of the sewing. There are second hand websites out there like Depop, Etsy, ThredUp, The RealReal and eBay that make second hand clothing shopping really easy, you can be specific about your searches too but make sure to always check the seams, tags and labels for quality and authenticity.

KNOW YOUR FABRICS Avoid Polyester because it not only is made from oil, it is an all-synthetic fibre that sheds microfibres into the waterways. Avoid fabrics like viscose rayon and rayon, acrylic, nylon, acetate and triacetate, most of these fabrics have a devastating impact not only on the environment but the people as well because of the toxic processes used when making them. Try buying natural, organic fabrics that have less of an effect on the environment, fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen, hemp, wool, cashmere and bamboo are recommended. EMBRACE SLOW FASHION It’s also suggested you only buy clothes if you see yourself wearing it in years to come, that means it needs to be timeless. Garments that are only a trend of the present should be avoided in this respect. Colours such as whites and blacks are always a good option and never seem to go out of style. Try to stick to the cuts and styles that will last longer in your wardrobe and on your body and help with the fast fashion trends of today’s society. RENT CLOTHES If you are a real fashionista and “have to have” the latest trends then you can always rent the latest from the runaway and still minimise your environmental impact. Renting helps with the special occasions/events, because I am sure we all fall into the trap of fast fashion mentality and feel the need to have a different outfits for each event. But, no need when you can rent it for the event, post the Instagram picture and send the outfit back and no one will ever know the difference.

APPLYING LIPSTICK Correctly BY JAIME PROUTEN @JAIMEKATE — MUA

Lipstick application is a hit or miss for any look. Is it too much, or perhaps not enough at all – it all depends on colour, application and quality. Anyone can smack on a glossy red and head out on the town, but will it last? By taking care and being practical when you apply your lipstick you can avoid early smearing and flaking lips, which are quite possibly the biggest interference when wearing a lipstick. Here are five steps to applying lipstick correctly and ensuring your pout will last all day and night, look crisp, vibrant and smooth.

STEP 1

Exfoliating your lips is a must if you want your lipstick to stay on all day or night. There are plenty of products you can find in store to ensure your exfoliation will leave your lips clean, flake free and luscious, but if you need something quickly a sugar scrub will work well, simply mix a little honey and any granulated sugar in a bowl and scub gently on your lips. Wipe with warm water and voila!

STEP 2

STEP 4

STEP 5

Priming will come next, here we’ve used INGLOT’s HoldOn Lip Primer as it’s a perfect preparation step which will extend the life of the lipstick to go on later. Priming your lips brings out the colour depth in the lipstick pigment and facilitates the underlining of your lip contour making the application of the product to come more precise and effortless, and who wouldn’t want that.

All products used are available for purchase at the Hooper Centre Pharmacy.

STEP 3

Lining your lips is perhaps the most ignored step when it comes to prepping your lips. It’s super important to line your smackers especially when opting for a vibrant or darker colour. Again going for an INGLOT Soft Precision Lipliner we know it has been tested to work effortlessly with the HoldOn Lip Primer used in Step 2. Lining your lips will help prevent any bleeding or feathering of your lipstick onto the surrounding skin.

This is the step that most people just skip to and go straight in with colour. Fill in your lips with your favourite choice of lipstick whether it be stick, tube, pallet the previous steps will ensure whichever chosen will give you a long lasting wear every time. Don’t forget to press your lips together to avoid any stroke marks and using a clean finger into your mouth, purse your lips around it and pull it out to ensure no transfers onto the teeth for later on.

This step is completely up to you if you want that extra oomph after applying your lipstick. A gloss can add a little or a lot of shine and even sparkles. The best way to apply the gloss is to use an applicator or your finger and apply on the middle of your bottom lip, rub your lips together to get the perfect sheen without your lips getting goopy from the overuse of the lip gloss, alternatively skip steps 3 and 4 and just wear gloss.

QUALITY CARE: An artist’s impression of the new Clive Berghofer Emergency Department and Qld X-Ray Radiology Centre which is due to be completed later this year. Picture: Supplied

ST VINCENT’S NEW EMERGENCY CENTRE STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE W ork is on track with the construction of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba’s new Emergency Department and Radiology service. The Clive Berghofer Emergency Department and Qld X-Ray Radiology Centre, is being built on the southwest corner of the hospital. Hospital chief executive officer Ms Kathryn McKeefry said the new facility would be easier to find, have direct road access along with enhanced contemporary services supporting rapid assessment and community support. “The emergency centre will feature three resuscitation areas, 15 treatment areas, and a medical assessment and planning unit with ability to provide allied health and nurse practitioner-led services. “The new medical imaging facilities will include nuclear medicine, ultrasound, X-ray, CT and MRI scanner. “There will be a new cafe with indoor and outdoor dining and a florist. “Most pre-works are done and very soon we will start to see this

building come out of the ground with footings and the slab going down. “We expect to open the centre late this year.” Ms McKeefry said in other infrastructure news, the hospital’s new, modern birthing suite was opened in early March and had been welcomed by mothers and staff alike. “We listened to feedback from mums who’d birthed with us previously and we included a bath that could be used for pain relief while in labour as part of the suite’s upgrade.” The latest infrastructure improvements are part of St Vincent’s growth plan to provide a contemporary and well-resourced hospital that will meet the health needs of the local community, both now and into the future. “The opening of the $30 million Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite in January 2018 added six new state-of-the-art operating theatres including a cutting-edge hybrid theatre, a new kitchen and a new main reception area for the hospital,” Ms McKeefry said.

BUILDING NEW FACILITIES FOR OUR COMMUNITY’S FUTURE Late this year we will open a brand new emergency and radiology centre for the Toowoomba community. It will feature modern and accessible facilities so our skilled medical, nursing, allied health and support teams can provide you with the very best emergency care. 07 4690 4000 | www.svpht.org.au 22

FITNESS Key tips to a sustainable lifestyle BY BEN LOXLEY AND RYAN O’GRADY

A truly sustainable fitness regimen must align movement, nutrition, lifestyle and mindset.

T

he hardest part is to find the balance between these areas and then we need to factor in your career and how you spend the 24 hours in your day. Work and rest are equally important for a number of reasons and sustainability is high on the list, so here are a few routine tips we like to use at our gym to balance a healthy day.

retirement, you need to enjoy your journey, and a large part of that is your career. When these practices are honoured throughout your day, watch what happens. They might sound like a lot to begin with but if you can master one at a time and move onto the next, before you know it, they will be a habitual part of your daily routine for success and sustainability.

MOVE: Find the time to exercise and make it a priority, whether that be first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or after work. Find the time that works in best for your daily routine so you don’t skip this vital piece of the puzzle.

For more tips and fitness tricks check out the PT’s instagram @benloxley_coach or @ryanog_coach

ENERGY: Sleep with the moon, rise with the sun and eat from the earth. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep per night to give your body the rest it needs. Fuel your body with whole foods to give yourself the best chance for productivity, longevity and sustainable energy. WATER: Ladies, try and aim for two to three litres of water per day and for guys, we want to aim for three to four as a minimum before we exercise. If you are training today, add an extra litre for both guys and girls. PURPOSE: Live your life and do something you love. We spend at least one-third of our life ‘working’ so invest your time and energy into something you love. Don’t keep working hard at a job you hate waiting for

WORKING FROM HOME Keeping productive BY GINA HORN

WITH more and more people being forced to work from home lately, you can still be productive and get your job done. Here are some top tips for working from home: HAVE A DESIGNATED SPACE Allocate a room or a desk you can work from with minimal distractions. Ensure you have adequate lighting and phone signal if you require it PREPARE YOUR WORKSPACE Have a coffee, get dressed (at least get out of your pyjamas) and make sure your laptop or work computer is charged and ready to go KEEP YOUR ROUTINE Retain a similar routine to if you weren’t working from home. So, if you work out in the morning, or walk the dog after work, do that. Set your start and finish time also so you maintain a boundary between your work and personal life WRITE A TO-DO LIST TO STAY ON TRACK Schedule your day around specific tasks to be completed. Cross each task off when you complete it INVEST IN A HEADSET OR CORDLESS HEADPHONES Have your hands free when taking phone calls to make it easier to write notes STAY CONNECTED Schedule a phone call or online video conference with a colleague so you don’t feel so isolated

A DECADE of love Nathan and Madi have know each other almost their whole lives, since meeting in primary school as classmates they’re now husband and wife almost 20 years on.

N

athan Peak had a huge crush on the beautiful Madison Vardanega in early primary school, little did he know almost two decades later that he would finally get to marry the girl of his dreams. The pair met in preschool and attended primary school together until Nathan left for an all-boys college in year five, disappearing off Madi’s radar until they reconnected at a mutual friend’s Christmas party in 2009. By January 2011 Nathan and Madi were officially a couple and were the happiest they’d ever been. “We could talk for hours and hours about anything,” Madi says. The duo who are camping fanatics had the opportunity of a proposal at one of their favourite destinations. “We got engaged at Sandy Cape on Fraser Island in December 2016,” Nathan says. “I was planning to propose the following day, but the weather was perfect, so I bought the proposal forward a day. “Madi was oblivious to the fact I was going to propose and missed all the clues.” Nathan and Madi were on the beach and after a walk he got down on one knee and popped the question. An easy answer on Madi’s behalf as their friends on the sand dunes cheered them on after the “Yes.” Although the proposal took almost six years to make, Nathan and Madi knew in the early days that they wanted to spend the rest of their livea together. “It was love at first sight. After a year or two of dating, I knew Madi was the one,” Nathan says. “I knew I wanted to marry him after a couple years of dating,” Madi says The wedding was held at the luxurious Sirromet Winery in Mount Cotton, and everything went off perfectly.

“We had the best wedding day, surrounded by all of our closest family and friends; the weather started off a bit sketchy but cleared up just in time.” says Madi. With happy tears, laughter and plenty of dancing the Peak-Vardanega wedding was all that they could have hoped for. Nathan Peak and Madi Vardanega-Peak have a good outline for their future with the want of travel, house purchasing and renovating and also getting a puppy before they kick start their own clan.

BRIDESMAIDS All you need to know T

he wedding party is going to be your support team leading up to and on your wedding day so you need to choose carefully. When it comes to selecting bridesmaids, Amelia Eime of Weddings Qld has a few useful tips and tricks to help you WHEN SHOULD I SELECT THEM? It depends on how well you know the bridesmaids. It can be less stressful to select your maids closer to your wedding date, eg three months before. This minimises the chances that one of them would become heavily pregnant by the time your wedding comes around and unable to fulfil her duties. If you have a falling out with one of your friends, then it’s easier to not select them as a bridesmaid rather than to ‘un-select’ them. Lastly, the chances of major weight change and dresses not fitting can be minimised.

HOW CAN I GET A DRESS THEY WILL LIKE? If you’re having more than one bridesmaid, then expect it to be near impossible for all of them to absolutely love the style and colour if their dresses are exactly the same. Consider selecting some material and sending them off to get a dress made in a style that suits them. They shouldn’t feel too annoyed then about spending their money as they get a dress they like, feel great in and are likely to wear again. You could specify that the skirt should be below the knee, ankle length, straight, A-line – whatever, but they can choose the top ie. strapless, one strap, spaghetti strap, square neck, round neck, etc. Some compromise could save trauma later on. If you want uniform style, then collect a few pictures and compile a shortlist. Then discuss the options with your bridesmaids. If they are involved in the consultation period as to how you’d like them to spend their money then there is likely to be less margin for tears as they helped pick out the style! When selecting the colour be sensitive that in order for your bridesmaids to feel OK about it all, they’ll probably be wanting the colour to not date and be something they could wear again. So, reds, blues, etc would be fine. If you’re a lover of burnt orange or lime green, then how about having a shoulder wrap in this colour? Or, use these colours in their bouquets and choose a dress colour that will accentuate the vividness of the flowers.

Everything you need to know when organising your bridesmaids.

HOW TO GET GREAT BRIDESMAIDS? When you do ask your friends to be bridesmaids, let them know what you expect from them for example do you expect them to accompany you to bridal expos, reception venues on your shortlist, wedding dress shopping, etc? Bridesmaids who work weekends, are casually employed, don’t drive, or have children may not be able to commit to this. It is also a good idea to let them know what you expect them to pay for. That way, if they don’t have $600 to spend on a new dress, shoes, hair and makeup they can bow-out gracefully. WHO PAYS FOR WHAT? It is not unusual to have your bridesmaids pay for their own dress, and in most cases their shoes too. It is open to negotiation as to whether or not the bridesmaids will pay for their own hair and makeup. In most cases they will do their own makeup. Bridesmaids do not generally pay for their jewellery. They either wear their own or it is a gift from the bride. Keep in mind the income of your maids when determining how much you want them to pay for.

V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT THEM TO SPEND? How about you ask them (separately) how much they think is reasonable to spend. Then, if you think that it’s not quite enough you can suggest that in lieu of a gift, would it be possible for them to contribute a little more? Determine if your dresses will be made or purchased off the rack. Keep in mind that you should be able to find great dresses from around $100 off the rack, and will probably spend $300+ having them made.

governments and all governments like to know that their money is well spent. Unassisted immigrants paid for their own passage and were no concern of the government, so few records were kept. The most we can hope for is a mention in the newspaper of the arrival port. Unfortunately, this is often vague with something like Mr J Oldfield and family or Mr J Oldfield, wife and children. Before Federation, immigration was the responsibility of the colonies and these records are to be found at the state archives. After 1922, the material is kept at NAA (the websites for these places have fact sheets or guides to help you). At the Toowoomba and Darling Downs Historical Society (TDDFHS), we have books and indexes for all states and films of passenger lists for most Queensland ships; as well as many from NSW. Some points to remember: ■ Many times, one member of the family paid and the others came out assisted. ■ People who had the means to pay their own way sometimes fudged the information, so that they got an assisted passage. ■ Sometimes one or more of the male members of the family came out before the rest. ■ Check the death certificate for years of residence in the colony or state. The person concerned may have lived in another colony for a period, but this will give a starting point for research. ■ Check all available indexes and records as information may vary.

IS IT TOO FAR TO SWIM? BY JAN WARD

A

ustralia is a land of immigrants and we all want to know where our family came from, why they made the long journey and when they arrived. Family stories will tell us where they lived before and even perhaps why they left their homeland, but finding when they arrived here can be difficult. There are three types of immigrants: convicts, assisted or bounty and unassisted. The convicts and assisted are well documented because they were government funded firstly by the English and later by the colonial

TIPS ON KEEPING YOUR GRASS O n both sides of the fence GREEN

FROM SECRETS OF TOOWOOMBA’S GARDENERS BOOK — AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE CHRONICLE OFFICE

Follow the advice of our award-winning gardeners and you’ll soon be enjoying the cool, green lushness of

a perfect lawn. Yes, lawns can be tricky and yes you are going to have to put a bit of effort in to get the best results. But as you channel all things ‘green’ keep in mind that you are adding value to your property. VAL AND BOB FORD:

LES AND FAE STEPHSON

MARK AND CINDY-JANE RYAN

A good lawn base is essential. It must have a layer of sand. You can’t plant a lawn straight onto red soil — having that layer of sand is good for drainage — good water flow and drainage is essential. I mow the lawn three times a week in warmer months to thicken it up and he fertilises it every six weeks. We have Winter Green on the footpath and Tiff Way grass in the garden itself.

We have a kikuyu lawn which Les fertilises with Scott’s Lawn Builder when rain is imminent. “I like to mow just before rain,” he said. “I have a beater type lawnmower, after a while the surface gets quite hard, so I core it with a 5/16 tungsten drill bit to 6 to 8 inches apart — it doesn’t take me long and is worth the effort.” Les reckons patchy lawns can be caused by the following: 1. Cats’ urine 2. Black beetle larvae on top 3. Grubs underneath — I have seen a whole patch 10 foot by 6 foot lift up like a matt, so I used lawn grub killer. Sprinkle on top always using a spreader for evenness, leave overnight and next afternoon hose it in and you will kill the larvae and grubs together. Do not water in the middle of the day, only in the morning or the late afternoon to avoid spots on the lawn.

We have Couch, Kikuyu and Buffalo depending on the location in the garden: Couch is mainly used for the open, sunny and showy areas in their garden. We feed this lawn well with a natural rock mineral and we weed it by hand. We only top-dress and aerate the lawn occasionally.

PAUL AND NOELA RUBB We have Winter Green Couch. If we think it looks patchy, we top dress with well-rotted feed lot manure. Twice a year in March and August we fertilise with CK88 and Dynamic Lifter. During winter when we know there will be a big frost, we cover most of the lawn with hessian. During the summer months it needs regular watering and more frequent mowing.

ED AND SHEILA POWER I strongly recommend that you soil test your lawns. We found that we needed to increase the PH of our soil to 6.5 or 7. Since then the lawn has been much better. We have two types of lawn; Sir Walter and Sweet Smother. We find that Sir Walter resists weeds. We tried Blue Couch but replaced it with Sir Walter. I do recommend drilling the lawn in autumn. You can use a garden fork but if that is too hard use a masonry drill and drill holes about 15cm apart.

home and living We should know better. I can’t influence the stock market or mob mentality, but I can control my patch of turf – making The Real Estate People run as efficiently as possible while we ride out this crisis. The big takeaway for me is transparency. We need to communicate constantly and keep people up to date with potential issues (which now develop daily). At the Real Estate People, we ’ve been talking to owners, buyers and sellers; and our tenants. This pandemic needs a strong response and we will be: Rescheduling inspections, using Facetime to interact with customers and conducting Facetime virtual walkthroughs of properties. We will have admin staff onsite at our office (working staggered shifts) and everyone else who can work from home will be. Bottom line, if you have an issue, we’ll be here for you – so, please contact us through the regular channels and we’ll address it. I don’t have all the answers, this is new territory for all of us. But, throughout this crisis, tenants will still need a roof over their heads and many landlords will still need rental income to meet their mortgage obligations. That’s why I call on the Prime Minister and the banks to protect these people because they all have commitments. Our office and our staff have commitments. We’re in this together. This is not the time for fear. This is the time for uniting to ensure we all make it through.

EVERYBODY TAKE A BREATH B

ack in cavemen times, fear was an essential part of survival. Whether through fight or flight, it drove adrenaline and helped protect us from danger. But in today’s modern society, fear is proving a barrier to common sense. Fear has made our stock market plummet. Fear has us acting like savages in supermarkets. Fear has us stockpiling medicine at the expense of others who desperately need it.

At The Real Estate People, we consider our word is our bond and we understand how clear communication and following through on promises is an integral part of good customer service. So, whether you’re buying, renting or selling, call us today or visit our Herries Street office and discover how we can help you sleep easy at night.

INTERIOR Having an eco-friendly home BY EMILEE NICHOLS

The environment and climate change are hot topics of discussion in 2020. More importantly, minimising our carbon footprint is important

F

ortunately, there are a number of ways you can incorporate sustainable living into your home and it won’t cost much at all, if anything you will find yourself saving money. When your dwelling is in need of a little sprucing up, be sure to include a few eco-friendly home styling tips. Some of these include :

Puchase sustainable homewares There has been a massive trend of late in sustainable products. In the past, buying sustainable pieces has often meant a higher price tag. Now however, you can find eco-friendly furniture and homewares at a much more budget friendly price point. Most recently, Big W released a range of sustainable furniture pieces, ensuring the products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.

Go second hand Thanks to Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and eBay it’s easier than ever to buy and sell furniture and homewares online. If you are not a fan of buying online you can visit garage sales, flea markets and antique shops and find all sorts of treasures ready for their next home. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

Upcycle Do you have a piece that still does the job but you just don’t love any longer? Upcycle! A coat of paint, re-upholstering or simply changing the handles/knobs on a piece of furniture can give it a new lease on life. Not to mention the satisfaction you’ll feel from a little DIY! A quick flick through Pinterest and you’ll have all the inspiration you need.

Bring the outdoors in Add some colour and life to your interior space with plants and fresh or dried flowers. From fiddle-leaf fig to succulents, house plants are one of 2020’s must have accessories. Not only do indoor plants look great, they also provide wellbeing benefits and make you feel more connected to the great outdoors.

VINTAGE Meet CARS Betsy – The 59 ’Holden FC 1.

Betsy has lived a long life, and it seems she has a lot left in the engine. Purchased as a demo in 1959 she’s been in Mervyn Watson’s family ever since. BY KATHERINE SAMPSON

N

ot all cars have the privilege of becoming vintage beauties, but when Mervyn (Merv) Watson purchased his Holden FC in 1959 he never would have thought it would look almost identical over 60 years later. We sat down with Heather Watson, Merv’s wife, and found out just how special Betsy the FC was. Although he’d owned the Holden for only one year before he met Heather, the name Betsy seems to have always come with the beast. “I know we started calling her that (Betsy), but I don’t know why. “For as long as I can remember it’s always been Betsy, the family called her Betsy, and she’s Betsy today,” she said fondly. The glory days of Betsy went by quickly, Merv would take Betsy everywhere and there were numerous trips to the coast in her youth, it was even the vehicle Heather herself learnt to drive in. Betsy wasn’t just great for her looks, but was practical too. The 1959 Holden FC was a camping body model, which meant the front seat would fold down and make a double bed. “That used to save a lot on cost,” Heather said when talking about trips to Hervey Bay. It wasn’t until the 70s that Betsy was parked and not moved for some time that she took a turn for the worse. Eventually, years after, Merv took Betsy to a repairer whose first task was to take the rust out of the car. “This fellow did something to it to start to take the rust out and he would leave it outside. “What he did made it worse and pitted it,

so we kept it under the water tank and under the tree in the back yard, eventually we locked it up under the house,” Heather said. “At this point Merv had had enough and considered getting rid of Betsy altogether and sell her for parts.” When Merv retired after working for twenty years as a nurse at Bailey Henderson Hospital, Heather decided to gift him the restoration of Betsy. She contacted a father and son duo who did car restorations, and were particularly interested in Betsy. “They came around and looked at her and said he would do it (fix Betsy),” Heather said “He had this hearse that was nearly 100-years-old that he was going to work on, and for some reason he put all his work on hold and did the Holden. “The father then got sick and passed away from Cancer a few months later and it was the last car he worked on.” On July 30, 2004, Betsy was fully restored, rust free, and purred like a kitten. Her glory days would return as she was used for their grandchildren’s school formals and special events, even quick trips to their nearest Hungry Jacks, were she was always met with awe. “Everybody came to know Merv by the car, they’d see the car, its number plate, and knew it was him,” Heather says. In 2014 Merv was diagnosed with Alzeimers Disease and passed away early 2017. Betsy came along to his funeral to farewell her first owner, and today still lives with his family. Her number plate the very same as when she was first registered, the high-beam headlights turned on by a button on the floor and her glory survived with decades of memories from a great and proud owner. If you’re lucky, you might see Betsy drive with as much beauty as she had 60 years ago, and hopefully for many years to come.
