It’s party season and though it may look a little different this year, there are still plenty of opportunities to let your hair down. In this issue, we talk to Fitzy’s Marketing Manager and fourth-generation publican, Anita Armanasco about lifting restrictions and how to celebrate safely in our Open to Party feature on page 35. We discover how to update your summer style without breaking the bank (page 8) and look at the latest in fragrances to get you through the season (page 18). At Style we are dedicated to supporting local produce and businesses. Preview the latest tasty treats available at your local restaurant or café on page 31. With summer just around the corner, your wardrobe may look a little drab and ready for a refresh. Follow these five easy steps to overhaul your wardrobe and put your best, most stylish, foot forward this season.
By AMANDA HERRON | ART OF STYLE

Pull EVERYTHING out of your wardrobe… yes, really. Donate items that have seen better days or aren’t you anymore. In the Kon Mari way, ‘thank them’ for their service and move on.

Figure out what your ‘neutral’ colours are. You might find you always gravitate to certain shades of blue, grey, whites, black or earthy colours for example. These neutrals are the glue that holds all the other pieces of your wardrobe together. Accent colours are the fun that you bring together with your neutrals; so, hold true to what works for you to ensure you always look your best. Pull out your favourite pieces that you always receive compliments on – these are your go-to pieces because they fit well and always make you feel like a million dollars. Take a closer look and you will see there will be common design themes in their shape and structure. These

When you are on the hunt for new pieces for you wardrobe, going into stores with a fixed idea in your mind about what you want can often end fruitless. Instead, have in your mind a clear idea of what styles suit you, what your neutral colour are and what fun accent colours you’d love to add into the mix. When you pick something up that you like, as yourself “Does this look like it already belongs in my wardrobe?” If the answer is yes, then you’re on the right track. Mix wardrobe staples in your neutrals with your fun seasonal updates. Carve out some time and keep mixing them around to figure out what works together so you never get stuck with ‘nothing to wear’. Play around with shoes and accessories to really make your outfits pop!

DIMITY JAEGER IS THE FUTURE OF DARLING DOWNS RUGBY, BUT HER FOCUS IS TO BUILD ON THE SUCCESSES OF THE PAST. Style is introducing a new section dedicated to showcasing the great women in sport from Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. The Chronicle sport editor Jason Gibbs will be sharing some of the stories he and his team have written that focus on their great individual, club and team efforts on and off the field. First up is USQ Saints rugby president Dimity Jaeger - Dimity created history earlier this year when she became Downs Rugby’s first female club president. Jason spoke to Dimity about her hopes for the club in August and just a few months later the Saints Women’s Rugby 7s team claimed the Emilee Cherry Cup. By JASON GIBBS | CHRONICLE SPORTS EDITOR
D
imity recently accepted the USQ Rugby presidency role and in doing so she “created” history becoming the first female president of a Darling Downs rugby club. “I love the club - the camaraderie in rugby is fantastic,” Dimity, 25, says. “It’s a very family orientated, friendly and accepting from the juniors right through to the senior ranks. “When our last president stepped down I was asked by members of the committee if I would consider taking on the role. “I thought about it for a little while and said yes. “It’s an honour to be the president particularly the first female president of a rugby club in the Darling Downs.
“I think it’s a big step forward not just for myself, but also rugby and women in sport as a whole.” A relative newcomer to rugby union Jaeger first started playing the sport three years ago - she believes a focus on “past values” is the key to returning the club to its glory days. “We have the right people in place at the club - experienced coaches and volunteers,” she says. “And I want to use our old boys network more, draw on their experience and knowledge. “In the 90s and 2000s we (USQ Saints) were one of the biggest clubs and I’d like to get us back there - winning premierships again. “To do that I think we need to go back to those values and focus that made us successful in the past. “I’d like to think I can bring some new ideas to the club as well. “I’ve been playing sport since I was four years old. “I’ve played and coached hockey at a high level here and overseas and want to share some of that experience.” Recovering from an ACL injury, Jaeger is not playing this season but she has been a keen sideline observer. “Even with the challenges of COVID are numbers are really good,” she said. “We have more than 50 male players which is the biggest number we’ve had in long time. “Our women are looking very good as well. I think the restrictions around noncontact training actually helped. “It gave them the chance to develop the skills they need and to learn the game more. “Hopefully we can retain our new players and progressively develop our teams. “The club has a very bright future.”

By SARAH FROM @STYLIST_ON_THE_MOUNTAIN Linen, linen and linen! Ever since a trip I made to Paddington in Sydney last year, where this fabric is practically the local uniform, linen has been a staple in my wardrobe and I am so excited to see it’s setting up camp for the season. I’m always helping my clients to make their wardrobes work for them, so we’re going to look at how linen can work for you this spring and summer!
A
s a stylist, I love seeing how each person uniquely translates the latest trends, prints, cuts, textures and colour palettes each season; for my clients it is really important that they can try new things and explore different trends in a way
that caters their individual style. So let’s look at a few different ways you can incorporate some linen pieces into your wardrobe, whether you’re looking for a complete look or just a single piece to shake things up for spring and summer – because who doesn’t love an effortlessly
chic, surprisingly comfortable and luxurious summer holiday aesthetic? THE BLOUSE: With a variety of shapes and style to choose from, the linen blouse is a great place to start. Whether you love the classic button up
with some beautiful wooden buttons or you prefer a simple cropped t-shirt vibe, you can pair it with your favourite jeans, skirt or pants and it will be an investment that brings new life to the pieces you already own.

THE PANTS: This is the most versatile linen piece you can own, in my opinion. Pop on your sandals, slides or sandshoes and you have an crisp, clean and practical summer look. But hold on, the girls are going out for drinks…grab the heels, a statement gold ring and you’ve transformed into that effortlessly chic, “I holiday at the Hamptons” aesthetic. Consider trying a high waisted wide leg linen pant to enhance your beautiful shape and create length in the legs. THE DRESS: My personal favourite because it’s an outfit in one and no effort at all. Depending on your individual style, you could opt for a shorter tiered dress, a longer A-line number or simple t-shirt style. But one thing is guaranteed, when you find your perfect aesthetic in a linen dress, you’ll be wearing it all summer long. To add some interest, add a statement bag in a material that contrasts the linen, like a wooden or metallic texture.

The class of 2020 had their prayers answered as they were allowed to put on a gown and suit and celebrate the last 13 years of schooling. What seemed like an event that was going to be canceled, like everything else, has gone ahead in most states and territories and students could get glamoured up for their formals.
A
bby Kheir is a dress goddess, founder, CEO and chief designer of the trending glamour brand Abyss by Abby. She says production has been ramped up thanks to sales going through the roof. "Fashion this year is glitz and glam. People are fed up with 2020 - they've had enough, and they want to celebrate their school formal and end of year party in style. "We are even seeing girls buying two and three dresses to ensure they've got options,” she says. Abby says most of the trends that they say are around the ‘wow’ factor. “Everyone wants to celebrate through fashion this year, “The more bling the better. “Everyone is tired of being cooped up and they want to take glam to the next level, they want to enjoy themselves and look and feel fabulous,” she says. Here are the top five hot formal trends international fashion designer Abby Kheir says Aussie girls grabbed this formal season: Cut outs, bling, satin, two pieces and asymmetrical.

NOVEMBER 2020 | TOOWOOMBA STYLE
Bling has been a beloved feature on formal dresses since before I can remember. But this year traditional bling is getting a 2020 shake up. Beaded bodices with sewn-on large crystals are out, and fully sequined gowns are in.
From slinky slips to corseted gowns – satin is in. It’s classy, stylish and incredibly luxurious. Satin is a great alternative for students who want to shine bright but without the extravagance of a sequined dress.
Two-pieces scream fun and fashionable, transforming the street-wear trend into a modern formal fashion statement. Pick a two-piece suit or a bralettestyle top and matching skirt teams for a fashionforward look.

Asymmetrical gowns are on trend this formal season in two big ways – a glamorous side leg slit and a show stopping one-shoulder feature. A leg slit is fun, exciting, and – of course – makes hitting the dance floor all the more easier, not that dancing is allowed.
Side-stomach cut-outs, back cut-outs, feature shoulder cut-outs are all super popular this formal season. The added detail of a cut-out really brings the cool-factor to any garment – it’s purposeful and playful. TOOWOOMBA STYLE | NOVEMBER 2020

SMOKEYEYE after five
By JAIME PROUTEN
T
he iconic smoky-eye can be done in many shades. In fact, my favourite smokey-eye is black and brown, but I’ve seen many conquer navy and blue, black and grey and other bold colours - such as green, red, or orange, just to name a few. This is an eye look to suit every eye shape there is. Regardless of whether you have large or small eyes, you’re never too young or old for that sexy, after-five look. To begin, choose an eyeshadow colour to compliment your eyes; I chose shades of matte brown and a matte black. Line your top lash line with either a kohl pencil or gel liner. Smudge the liner with black eyeshadow, not going above your crease as this is where you will be blending your more neutral shades through and softening the difference of shades. Line your bottom lash line with black kohl pencil and smudge with a dark brown for a smoky under eye. This look works better if you complete the eyes first to avoid fallout from the darker shadows. (You can wipe under eyes with makeup remover before starting on your base). You can keep your look matte or add glitter in a similar shade to the matte shadow to add texture to your look. Our INGLOT Makeup Brush 4ss will make blending a breeze. I love finishing this look with big lashes and a fierce contour. As well as a nude lip to maintain attention on the eyes.

Springtime fashion tips By ALEX FRAMPTON | STYLE SAGE
N
ow that we are seeing warmer conditions, we feel the need to lighten our wardrobe and make ourselves feel brighter especially after such a heavy year. It’s time to take the jumpers, long-sleeve tops, heavy shoes and those winter colours, and pack them away. Think about layering for the next month or so, such as a short-sleeved cotton tee with a staple denim jacket. Think brighter colours: blues, saffron yellow and greens are perfect for this time of the year. Keep those really bright colours for summer. Three-quarter denim jeans in blue or white will now look the part, with a cotton long-sleeved shirt rolled up during the day and down for those cooler nights. Look for 100 per cent cotton or linen for your mid-length dresses or skirts. They are available at every price point and will instantly feel lighter and more evocative of spring.
Get out your white sneakers or buy a fresh pair. They will make everything look up-to-date and new. For this spring, I think simple lines and organic materials. Go crazy with your accessories, add fabulous earrings, a colourful necklace, and kitten heels to take you from shopping to an evening out. Some outfits I have worn in the past week include pieces from the labels Seed, Trenery and Witchery, which are all available in Toowoomba at Grand Central, while I also wore Set Collective t-shirts which are available online, and white jeans from Florence & Marabel, and the fabulous earrings from The Store Room. Having style is about having your own style. Know what suits you, listen to those who compliment you, know what colours look good on you, and you can’t go wrong. WITCHERY BIANCA ESPADRIL FLATS $79.95

Yes, you DO need a body care routine
WELLNESS
By KELSEY FERENCAK | BODY+SOUL
Your skincare should extend further than your face. Here, we share the best hair removal options, why exfoliating is essential and why your regular body moisturiser probably isn’t cutting it.
T
hey say summer bodies are made in winter, and it goes beyond simply sculpting a set of abs – the saying actually applies to your complexion, too. While you may be tempted to neglect the parts that are hidden beneath layers, you’ll save yourself more work when the warm weather rolls around by keeping your skin in tip-top condition over the months of hibernation. We’re bringing you ancient techniques, high-tech tools and powerful ingredients to give your limbs and torso the attention they deserve by supercharging your
self-care rituals from top to toe. They will help keep skin youthful, radiant and plump when temperature fluctuations, pollution and fake tan are working overtime to suck it of much-needed nutrients and hydration.
UPGRADE YOUR MOISTURISER
Hydrating your body is one thing, but supercharging your everyday moisturiser is another. Instead of opting for a basic cream that solely focuses on hydration, look to using multitasking youth boosting elixirs that target
dryness, wrinkles, pigmentation and skin resurfacing to get the most bang for your buck. If you’re onboard the clean-beauty bandwagon, or eager to make the switch, body lotion is the best place to start. Our skin is our largest organ, and we apply moisturiser to 90 percent of it, so it makes sense to cut down on unwanted ingredients.
EXFOLIATING IS ESSENTIAL
A good-for-you-and your-skin habit to get into is dry body brushing. The
ancient Ayurvedic technique not only helps shed layers of dead skin, but also boosts circulation and stimulates the lymphatic system, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite and uneven skin tone by smoothing and toning, while detoxifying and eliminating fluid retention. Take note from Japanese style bathing rituals and exfoliate in the shower before relaxing in the bath totally clean. Choose a formula with skin-boosting ingredients including alpha hydroxy acids and antioxidants as these help brighten skin while buffing away dry, patchy areas.

New Emergency Department set to open at St Vincent’s
S
t Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba’s new Emergency Department and Radiology service is set to open this month. We will offer the Darling Down’s community an opportunity to view our contemporary Emergency Department before it starts service delivery. It will be open to the public from 9am until noon on Saturday, November 7, which will include guided tours of the new Emergency Department (ED) and Queensland X-Ray Radiology Centre in the Clive Berghofer Wing. Due to COVID-19 precautions, bookings are essential and can be made via www.trybooking.com/BMCMH Tickets are free. The new facility is located on the southwest corner of the hospital bordering Mackenzie and Herries streets. St Vincent’s Hospital Chief Executive Officer Ms Kathryn McKeefry said the new facility was the latest addition in the comprehensive infrastructure program started at the hospital three years ago. “We have proudly served the community for almost 100 years and purpose-built infrastructure like our new ED and radiology service supports us being able to provide first-class healthcare into the future,” she said. Toowoomba Private Emergency Group will continue to operate the ED which includes three resuscitation areas, 15 treatment areas, and a medical assessment and planning unit with the ability to provide allied health and nurse practitioner-led services. “We are very excited the new medical imaging facilities at Queensland X-Ray will include nuclear medicine, ultrasound, X-ray, CT and MRI scanner and will be operational by December,”
A fresh and bright reception area will welcome people to St Vincent’s new emergency department. Ms McKeefry said. “We are grateful to local philanthropist Clive Berghofer for his $3.5 million donation which made the project possible.” Ms McKeefry said the department
would be easier to access because it was developed with a road frontage. The facility will feature a new café with indoor and outdoor dining, and a florist. Recent infrastructure additions at the hospital have included the Clive
Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite which opened in January 2018, adding six new state-of-the-art operating theatres, a new kitchen, and a new main reception area, and an updated birth suite which opened earlier this year.

Important decisions to make
before getting implants If you’re thinking about getting breast augmentation surgery, you’ve probably Googled all you can and discussed your options with your cosmetic surgeon. Here are a handful of things you need to consider when making the decision to go under the knife.
D
r Eddy Dona is a plastic surgeon based in Sydney who specialises in reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries. “As a society, cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery have become less taboo to talk about. However, many people still don’t understand the options available to them and the importance of doing their research,” Dr Dona said. “A breast augmentation is a procedure that involves inserting implants into your breasts to create an enlarged appearance. But it is not that simple – the look and feel of your post-surgery breasts depends significantly on the decisions you make before you go under the knife.” With decades of experience, Dr Dona compiled some key issues you need to understand so you make the right decision. In this edition, Dr Dona talks about budgets, implant style and texture and the implant profile. Make sure to follow along next month when Dr Dona looks at Saline or silicone, the implant pockets and scar locations and CC’s. Dr Dona is one of the most in-demand breast surgeons in Australia. For more information visit drdonaplasticsurgery. com.au. YOUR BUDGET As per everything in life, you often get what you pay for. Cheap surgery is available overseas, however this comes with many potential problems. Many Australian junior or inexperienced plastic surgeons offer budget breast enhancement surgery. Also, many
non-plastic surgeons, or doctors with no formal surgical qualifications offer inexpensive breast enhancement surgery. Of course, the most expensive breast enhancement surgeons do take it to an extreme, and charge a lot more than ‘average’, while providing no more in results. So basically, do your research on your surgeons beforehand. IMPLANT STYLE – ROUND OR TEAR DROP The shape of the implant can affect the final results. Some surgeons will exclusively only use a round implant style because it is an ‘easier to use’ implant with predictable results and less potential problems. Other surgeons may choose to only use teardrop implants because they believe they can achieve the aesthetic results they want with these and are prepared to accept the greater potential problems associated with these implants. Of course, some surgeons will use both types depending on the patient. Having said that, in the last few years many surgeons who have previously used teardrop implants have moved to round style. In the end, if you have a particular look you’re after, and your surgeon is not offering you that, get a second opinion. IMPLANT SURFACE – TEXTURED OR SMOOTH The implant surface can be either textured, sandpaper rough, or smooth. Most surgeons have used a textured implant as they do provide some benefits, including providing grip and stability
of the implant, and also reducing the risk of capsular contracture (implant hardening). However, in recent times, textured implants have been associated with a rare cancer (ALCL) with the risk varying from anywhere between 1:2,800 to 1:86,000. Due to this, many of the textured implants are no longer available. The benefit of the implant stability that textured implants provide means that teardrop implants are all textured. Therefore, many surgeons who have previously used teardrop implants no longer offer these to avoid using textured implants, despite the relatively low risk of 1:86,000 that current textured teardrop implants readily available on the Australian market provide. IMPLANT PROFILE How far forward the implant projects
is what the implant profile refers to. However, different brands have different naming systems so it can get very confusing when looking at before and after pictures. The varying profiles used by different brands to describe the implant projection include: low, mini, moderate, moderate plus, demi, high, full, extra high, extra full, corse. The simplistic way of viewing it is that the greater profile, regardless of the naming system, will create a bigger breast. Not to confuse things further, but what one brand may refer to as a ‘moderate plus’, may have the same projection as a ‘full profile’ in another brand. So, make sure you speak to your surgeon and have them clearly explain the profile that’s been chosen for you, why, and if it is going to achieve the look you’re after.

Interior designers turned restaurateurs now making THE BEST CHINESE CUISINE in town By KATHERINE SAMPSON Chinese cuisine is a globally adored food, and Toowoomba is no different with the Hooper Centre’s Qi’lin Oriental Cuisine already a front-runner for best in town.
R
ecently the Australian Good Food Guide awarded the restaurant with the Readers Choice award for Chinese food in South East Queensland Country 2020. This was the latest in Qi’lin’s long list of industry awards, from being the Best Chinese Restaurant in Queensland by the RCA for six years consecutively to being

a recommendation on the 17th edition of The Lonely Planet’s Guide to Australia. The Chinese restaurant is run and owned by Annette Cheung and her husband and head chef Stanley Poon. The couple came to Australia in 2004 from Hong Kong where they were both full time interior design consultants. While completing her MBA at the
University of Southern Queensland, Annette met her business partner, who has since retired, Darryl Scott, and in 2008, after a year of preparation, Qi’lin was born. It was a massive leap for Annette and Stanley, having come from a vastly different career, but they used this to their advantage.
“We did all the décor ourselves,” Annette says. “We went to China to get all the products. “Building material, kitchen utensils, everything. “And then we brought it all back in a big shipping container.” Not only is the restaurant uniquely
FOOD
designed by Annette, but Stanley also uses his skills when it comes to creating mouthwatering dishes. “We pay a lot of attention to the garnish. making the dishes more attractive and beautiful,” Annette says. The pair do still miss their old lives but know that this path was the best for everyone. “When your life changes, you need to take that change and do a good job with that change and make it a success,” Annette says. Food at Qi’lin isn’t just amazing by chance: Stanley attended a famous culinary institute in Hong Kong where he first wore the toque, well before he knew he would be the chef behind one of Australia’s most prestigious Chinese restaurants. Specialising in barbecue, Chinese pastry and Cantonese cuisine, the couple were unaware this would be the key to their diverse menu of 139 delectable dishes. The meals Qi’lin Oriental Cuisine offer a range from traditional Chinese meals, to innovative specialty dishes that are unique to Annette and Stanley’s menu. “We have a crispy walnut beef, that you can only find here,” Annette says, which are crumbed beef fillets, from local producers, with a walnut crumb, served in sweet chili, lime and garlic sauce, all produce also coming locally from the Lockyer Valley. When COVID-19 struck earlier this year, Qi’lin was faced with its own hardship, and tough decisions were
needed to keep the kitchen open. Normally the restaurant employs eight staff to keep diners happy, but with the restrictions that were put in place the team had to make heartbreaking choices. “We had to let a few staff go,” Annette told Style sadly. “We are waiting for the day we can call them back and for COVID-19 to go away; for everyone’s lives to go back to normal and be happy again,” she says. With these changes, Annette has found herself in the kitchen for the first time to help in cost-cutting but is keen in things returning to normal. In the meantime, Qi’lin are still pushing to keep their doors open. With delivery options available and dine-in customers welcomed once again, it’s hopeful Qi’lin will return to its former glory at the end of it all. Qi’lin Oriental Cuisine is currently open for dinner from Tuesday to Sunday and lunch from 12pm to 2:30pm on Friday to Sunday. There is limited dinein seating available, but plenty take-away options and delivery to enjoy the best in your own home. Last but not least, Annette and Stanley would like to sincerely thank all their loyal customer’s support during this hard time, and wish everyone all the best. SUBWAY’S Gourmet sandwiches make the perfect lunch

here are currently six Subway restaurants in Toowoomba, including one in Grand Central’s food court, which will soon reopen with a complete refurbishment. At Subway you really do get to choose everything about your sandwich. From a tasty selection of breads and wraps, cheeses and meats, and of course salads and dressings it’s easily the only place your dream sub can be made. Not only is Subway healthy, it’s also the perfect alternative to making boring sandwiches for the young ones at school
or yourself at work. Toowoomba Subway owners, Hazel and Mark Johnstone, have been open in Toowoomba for more than 26 years and are now seeing more local mums and dads opting out of the old school lunches for a fresh Subway lunch. “Parents come by in the morning on their school drop-off and pick up sandwiches and wraps for their kids to take for lunch,” Hazel says. Local schools are also choosing to order Subs for “Subday” and they receive a donation back for school funds. Often children won’t touch their lunch
and bring it home at the end of the day but by having such a unique lunch students are happily eating their Sub and getting all their essential nutrients thanks to the incredible salad options Subway offers. Subway has always been a good choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner and now it’s easier than ever. With plenty of catering options, for business meeting, birthdays, picnics, even weddings if you can believe it! Drinks and cookie platters are available too. There’s also plenty of online options, so you can order ahead of time and pick up in-store, as well
as delivery options through Uber Eats and Doordash . If you don’t want to get out of the car the Subway store at The Intersection on Ruthven St is drive-thru too and don’t forget, the Margaret St store is open all night on Friday and Saturday. Subway gift cards make that perfect present for the “hard to buy for” teenager and are great stocking fillers. So, when your kids are complaining about lunch, or even for yourself – visit your local Subway Toowoomba store today!

estrictions are lifting, and we can return to the dance floor! For the last six months, business have been working tooth and nail to stay open and keep things moving. Now, businesses are proudly re-opening their doors, and just in time for the silly season. Although a lot of us worked from home this year, that doesn't mean we should be restricted an end of year party. Both for the efforts everyone made, and just making it through the year without going crazy, and there are plenty of party ideas out there that are completely COVID-safe. SO FIND YOUR VENUE AND GET YOUR GROOVE ON (Dancing isn't approved yet - but we're just as excited as you are for when it is!) A few celebratory ideas that we cannot help but mention and give thanks to opportunity this year are... Drive-by parties: Either guests or host head out on a trip to have a wave and cheers to anything from birthdays, to baby showers and engagement parties. Virtual Parties: Get everyone together in their own homes. Using one of the internet's many meeting sites get on a hook-up and in real time be together, apart. (Pants aren't essential).
Movie Night: The internet strikes again with this one, enjoy a Netflix party with mates from your own homes. These 'Teleparties' allow users to watch movies and shows online and synchronizes video playback whilst including a group chat. So you can still chat about what's going on. This is just a great idea in general for those with friends who just can't stay quiet.

y season returns WITH COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS EASING IN QUEENSLAND, ANITA ARMANASCO IS READY TO PARTY
"I can remember sitting at Fitzy’s on a Saturday night with my brother and you could literally hear crickets. People were starting to get scared and began staying home. COVID was getting real."
T
he fourth-generation publican and marketing manager of the iconic Toowoomba pub, Fitzy's, said things spiraled quickly from there with pubs and clubs the first domino to fall - leaving Fitzy’s completely closed for 10 weeks. “I know we weren’t alone, but it was a really tough time," Anita said. “We invited our staff down to the pub the day it closed and there was pizza and beers and we laughed, we cried and said goodbye for who knows how long,” she said. “It was especially hard when you’ve worked with some of these people for over ten years and they’re your friends, and they have families. It was heart-breaking.” With Anita and her husband moving in with her parents for an expected six-month closure, she said her time in lock down was spent brainstorming ways to get back in business. “When you’re living in such close quarters with uncertainty hanging heavily, it can bring out the worst but also the best people. As a family we chose to look forward as much as we could. But having unlimited access to wine was also handy at this time,” she said, laughing. “People were still calling the pub every day hoping for insider information and I’m sure some thought that we had a direct line to the Premier. But there were also people just calling to check in, and that was really nice.”
“Being a local, family business seems to resonate during tough times, particularly in a small town. There were a lot of people rallying behind us and we did what we could to support our community in return.” “We donated food to charities like Base Services and supported staff where we could. We started new initiatives like ‘Fitzy’s at Home’ meal kits to get things back into motion. Along with Job Keeper that really got us through until we reopened, which was thankfully a lot sooner than we thought.” Reopening with full table service only and no-standing restrictions wasn’t without its challenges. “We’re blessed to have such a large venue. So as far as capacity goes, we have been able to cater for a good number of patrons. “But the ever-changing restrictions and no-standing rule put a lot of pressure on our team. At one point we were thrown a curve ball with huge step backwards. We were back to fully seated and it was effective immediately, on a Friday afternoon no less.” “We kind of felt like school headmasters; tapping people on the shoulder telling them to take a seat but we did what we had to do to keep them safe.” Anita said thankfully the vibe completely changed after the seating restriction was lifted. “It was like a flick of a switch. It was joyous to see how something so simple could put smiles on our patrons’ faces again.
And ours too. A sense of normality had been restored and people were happy again.” With restrictions set to slowly lift even more, Anita said she’s looking forward to a pub filled with patrons ready to party 2020 away. “We love being back and helping to restore some of that escapism people have missed out on for so long.” “And though there will be some restrictions and conditions still in place for a long time, like contact tracing, there is still a lot of fun to be had, especially with Christmas coming.” With several function rooms available, parties are logistically possible while adhering to the current guidelines. “First and foremost, we are still committed to keeping our patrons and staff safe. Unfortunately, this isn’t over and it’s our job to help people get through these difficult times in a safe way. For us, it’s business as normal, just a new kind of normal. “That said, I can’t wait for the first time we can open the dance floor. I can imagine the elation people will feel being able to dance freely and let their hair down. Just the freedom of it. “That right now would be the icing on the Christmas cake.” FITZYS TOOWOOMBA 153 MARGARET ST, TOOWOOMBA WWW.FITZYS.COM 07 4631 3700

OPEN TO PARTY
CELEBRATE COVID-SAFE Restrictions are easing here in Queensland, but there are still certain ones in place – making it rather tricky if you’re planning a party. So how can you ensure your celebration or event is all COVID-safe?
DO
ENFORCE GATHERING LIMITS In homes and public spaces, up to 40 people are allowed to gather as of October 16.
MAKE SURE YOUR VENUE HAS A COVID SAFE PLAN Of course, you can have your party at home as long as there’s no more than 40 people, but venues and businesses operating under the COVID Safe Framework are allowed a larger quota – provided everyone is physically distanced – and it pays to check. You might also like to remind your guests to fill out the contact tracing forms as they enter the venue, especially those who arrive flustered or late or are just prone to forgetting things.
DON’T
PROCEED WITH THE PARTY IF YOU ARE SICK Yes, it’s disappointing to cancel all those carefully-laid plans, but how much worse would you feel if you made your guests unwell – let alone if it turns out to be coronavirus? GET ALL CLOSE AND PERSONAL Physical distancing rules still apply, even when there haven’t been any local cases recently. You may be yearning to hug that friend you haven’t seen in months, but please, don’t risk it. The BEST PARTY CANAPÉS for your waistline, according to a dietician
The holiday period is food heaven - no doubt about that. Among the delicious desserts and endless array of canapés, it's easy to go overboard. Dietitian Susie Burrell explains the good and the not-so-good when it comes to silly season o'dourves.

ould it even be a Christmas party with some mini quiches and sausage rolls? While there are a range of more gourmet party canapés available nowadays, in general the old school pastry based favourites remain on many an entertaining platter. And let’s be honest, calories do not really matter when they are consumed via bite-sized morsels while enjoying a glass of bubbles at Christmas, do they? There are some healthier alternatives to serve instead, but don't be surprised if they take a little bit longer to prepare.
SKEWERS
One of the biggest issues with party foods is that they are not filling, lacking in the protein that helps to slow down digestion and keep us full and satisfied. Compared to more processed fried and pastry based canapés, the great things about skewers - meat, chicken, seafood or even tofu is that they offer much needed good quality protein to the canapé mix. Even better is when the skewers are a mix of protein and vegetables to improve nutritional quality further.
SEAFOOD
Not only do Aussies need to eat a whole lot more seafood, but party options including fresh prawns, oysters, smoked salmon and sashimi are low in calories, rich in nutrients and are a fresh and tasty addition to any canapé offering. Even bite-sized sushi pieces are a great option
with just 100 calories and less than one gram of fat per serve.
MARINATED VEGETABLES Even if your favourite vegetables are marinated on a platter, they are still a relatively good choice nutritionally compared to more processed snack
options - and including them on a platter can be a great way to boost vege intake at this time of year. Olives too, although salty are relatively low in calories. Including chopped vegetables, marinated veggies and some tasty olives is a great way to boost the nutritional profile of any canapé on offer.

SPEND A LITTLE SAVE A LOT
T
hese days our environmental footprint is becoming increasingly important. With threats on our existing environment caused by a changing climate, we can all help do our part in reducing our dependence on fossil fuel burning – and it starts with our homes. It's not simply what energy is burned in our homes every day to make them comfortable and livable, it's also what energy was used to manufacture their basic components in the factories. So, just how energy efficient are our homes really? Well, it's all summed up with a star rating. A star rating is used to assess the level of energy efficiency in our homes. This rating ranges from 0-10 and judges the design of the building shell – the walls, roof, flooring and windows. In Australia, all new builds must have a minimum rating of 6 stars. While this government mandated minimum is a step in the right direction, these 6-star homes are generally not that energy efficient and, as the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) states, this rating ‘indicates good, but not outstanding, thermal performance’ (2019). All in all, we can do a whole lot better. We've spent well over a decade now becoming expert in constructing genuinely energy efficient homes — 7, 8 and even 9-star — that are not only supremely high quality builds so will last for generations, but are truly energy efficient, carefully choosing materials and components that were made right. Energy efficiency has another vital aspect — our homes are designed and
built to be easily adaptable to your changing wants and needs as you get older. They are simple things which barely make a ripple in your budget, but will potentially save you tens of thousands later. By carefully considering many ‘passive’ elements of our homes' design, we can create a far more energy efficient home that will save you money from day one. Strategically crafting a home to work with — and not against — the natural environment will result in a far more liveable home that uses the natural elements to reduce energy usage. There are three fundamental aspects of home design that will increase your home’s energy efficiency. The first is orientation of your home and the second, designing the home in manageable zones. The third element is insulation, which, in tandem with the former fundamentals, will help maintain a consistent temperature in your home and minimise your daily energy usage. This consideration at the design stage of the build is crucial — a little extra investment will save you a tonne of money. Ignore the basics and you will end up spending thousands fighting a changable nature trying to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. While we don’t know what Climate Change will bring, we do know that energy prices are always on the rise. If you spend a little at the beginning making your home more energy efficient, you will save a lot every day — both monetarily and environmentally. At Geoff Gibson Homes we are committed to making that happen.

here is the rain? We never seem to get enough in this part of Australia and so it’s become imperative to include drought tolerant plants in the garden. Succulents and cacti are a perfect addition to a water-wise garden. Of course, they will always thrive better with care and attention, but they won’t complain too much if you neglect them – and this means they are great for timepoor gardeners too. Betty Sullivan: Grow your succulents in course sandy soil. Annette Armitage: My cacti and
NOW
succulent garden is a chess board; the succulents and cacti are in pots and are used in as the pieces in the chessboard. I give them a good watering once a week. They live in the hot house in the winter, away from severe frosts.
Wayne and Narelle Schick: Succulents are great because they can withstand the heat and drought. We have planted them as edging and to fill in gaps. Not all are frost hardy though.
John and Heather McGuinn: Lots of succulents and cacti can easily be grown from breaking off leaves and stems and just planting them.
Matthew Dolley: Euphorbia “Sticks on Fire” or “Chalk Sticks” (Euphorbia tirucalli) will grow nice and tall and provide wonderful yellow and red colours in winter.
Ed and Sheila Power: Integrate succulents and cacti into the garden design. They look great against rocks and are an easy way to introduce some colour in the garden.
Brian and Jan Aldridge: If you’re a mass cacti and succulents, do ensure the beds are raised and dig sand into the soil. Water cacti in the garden once a month and potted cacti once a week.
Julie Roggeveen: I use Searle’s cacti and succulent mix for potted plants. Good drainage is essential. Give plants space to grow so they don’t become lanky. Fertilise with half strength fertiliser or pelleted form especially suited for these plants — once a month is fine. It is very easy to propagate from fallen leaves I just leave them at the base of the plant and when they have begun to grow roots I pot them up.

WHAT YOU NEED Teacup/Tea pot/any old rustic container Potting mix, preferably a cacti & succulent potting mix Small pebbles or rocks Succulents, as many plants and sorts as you want. METHOD
1. Find your chosen teacup or container and give it a good clean. 2. Using small pebbles or rocks line the base of the cup to create
weight so it doesn’t tip. 3. Fill the cup with potting mix leaving a centimeter from the rim. 4. Plant as many or as few succulents in the cup, ensuring all the roots are covered by soil. 5. Depending on where you want to leave your new succulent teacup, add some more rocks to the top to stop the soil from drying out too quickly. 6. Water daily, weekly or monthly it’s pretty easy to keep these succulents alive and enjoy your nice cuppa succa!

THE BUILDERS DIARIES
Getting Started By MEGHAN BRYANT
A
s a child my family moved houses more times than I could count, and I switched schools 11 times. That might sound like a disjointed childhood, but it wasn’t. My dad had a job that required him to move around the country and I absolutely loved it. I loved the excitement of discovering my new room and lying awake at night thinking about how I would decorate it with the small amount of possessions I owned as a child. It’s probably why when I met my future husband Matt at 17 and he told me we would forever be moving houses because he already had so many design ideas, I shrugged and said “okay.” Most people hate the idea of packing up their lives and moving house, but I enjoy it. Even more so now than when I was a child because instead of just being able
to decorate a bedroom, I have the whole house. Matt and I have lived in three different homes together. The first was one he owned and renovated with his brother, the second we built together, the third we renovated in six weeks together, and now we are building our new home. This time, it’s a family home, because we’re joined by our one-year-old son Billy. In May 2019 Matt sat at our
kitchen table and drew a rough plan of what he wanted our home to look like, and it only took one or two revisions and he had the layout perfect. We enlisted the help of Alisco Designs to bring the design to life and it was even better than we imagined. Our new home has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen and butler’s pantry, mud room,
library, and the four living areas include the main area, media room, kid’s retreat as well as an outdoor area with a firepit. That may sound like a lot, but the home is 315sq m, which is only slightly above the standard-size home for a

family of four these days. The reason we are able to fit so much in our house, is due to the design. Matt laid it out to maximize the space. Matt isn’t a draftsman or architect - he is a builder and co-owner of Bryant Brothers Building Group - but he also has an eye for the design process. “I really liked basing the idea

off the homes you see in American movies, with the high-pitched rooves and the driveway on a right-angle to the house,” Matt says. “But I also wanted to keep it in style with Toowoomba homes, so we took it in a slightly different direction and put our own twist on it. “I liked the idea of walking through the front door into the center of the home, which is made up of the kitchen, dining and living areas. “I wanted to be able to open up all the living

areas and it feel like one big room yet at the same time close them all off to each other. “The spacious feeling is also helped by almost a wall of glass along the eastern side of the home to capture the morning sun.” While Matt focuses on the design as well as building the home, he leaves most of the creative and interior decorating side to me. We knew when buying this block that there would be some lengthy delays because the development still wasn’t approved. The delay has given us plenty of time to design the inside and outside of our home, choosing everything that will go into the build, right down to the door handles and light fittings. Our idea is to make the home a mixture of American Colonial but with a modern feel. We finally began building at the end of September with the plan to be in the home within four months. So far, the block has been cut, the slab has been poured and our frames are up – these are all jobs for Matt and his subcontractors. My job has been to pick and choose our tiles, paint, flooring, cabinetry, blinds and plumbing fittings. The following stages will be where we see these elements come to life.

The Golden Ticket... not as it seems By ELIZABETH ADAMS | ASSOCIATE AT KENNEDY SPANNER LAWYERS
B
efore separated parents can apply to the Court for Parenting Orders, they must first attempt to resolve their matters through family dispute resolution. After attempting this, they are given a Section 60I Certificate to be able to go to Court. Section 60I Certificates can be likened
to the Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. In this scenario, a lot of separated parents see the Court as an almighty place where all their wishes for parenting orders will come true, much like the Golden Ticket winners think they can eat as much chocolate and candy they want. When touring the Chocolate
Factory however, the winning ticket holders find out that the factory is not as they imagined, their wishes do not come true and consequences flow to those who do not follow the rules. Going to Court with the impression that you are going to get everything you want and when you want it, is much like tagging along with Charlie and co for the Chocolate Factory tour but without the sweets and Oompa-Loompas. The Court process can take years to navigate, cost thousands in legal fees and create further disharmony in the family. For parents unable to agree on arrangements for their children, the Judge (who may not be as nice as Willy Wonka), will make a decision about your children, without really knowing who they are. Often, the Orders made by the Court do not align with either parents’ wishes. Outside the Court system, with a team of experts, most parents are able to resolve parenting arrangements by agreement (at a fraction of the costs of a Court hearing). Research suggests that parents are more likely to work better together with Orders they have agreed upon compared to orders imposed on them by the Court. An expert team normally includes solicitors for each parent, a child expert to provide feedback on how the children

are coping with the separation and counsellors/psychologists for the parents to help them deal with the interpersonal issues that remain between the parents so that parents can focus on their children without the heartache often associated with separation. Rather than rushing off to Court, where parents may not get their desired outcome, separated parents should first consider forgetting that Golden Ticket and instead focus on reaching an agreement that is best for the children and the family as a whole.

AFTER
BUSINESS
By ROSLYN BURTON | PRINCIPAL AT THE REAL ESTATE PEOPLE
T
he other day, a couple came to our office who I hadn’t seen in almost three years. Back then, I’d sold them their ‘forever’ home and, excitedly, they told me they were now in a position to buy their first investment property. They’d been watching our website prior to going on holidays and had identified the perfect rental - great location, great potential yield and, most importantly, it suited their budget. I then had to break their hearts - we’d sold it the weekend prior. Moving forward, we then discussed our available listings but nothing really mirrored what they were looking to buy. I said: “leave it with me”. Now knowing what they were after, we were able to speak to some of our colleagues in the industry and find a great property that matched all their “must-haves”. But, given it wasn’t listed with The Real Estate People, the couple was reluctant to deal with another agency.
Working for you I understand why they would be guarded and I was quite flattered that we were held in such high regard. It’s understandable that if you have an agent you connect with and trust that they’ll be the person you want to be dealing with. A great compromise is to do what we call a “conjunction”. This is where you are still represented
by your agent who then works on your behalf with another agency to secure the property you have your eye on. They will attend inspections with you, do the negotiating between the parties and finalise the contract details. The advantage is you have somebody you trust in your corner from the very start. But, my best advice is to “get in early”. By that, I mean you should speak to
your real estate agent right at the start of your journey, establish budgets and whether you need finance, etc as it gives them the opportunity to keep an ear to the ground of what’s out there. Whether it’s directly through us or other local agencies, we can work together to find you the exact property you want (often before it even gets advertised).

The purrfect pets HOME
It may be a dog–eat–dog world, but cats clearly take the cake
C
ats are the most popular pet in the United States, outnumbering dogs by about 14 million animals. In Australia, dogs still reign supreme
(with about 38 per cent of households preferring ‘man’s best friend’ to their feline foes). Despite this, cats are still a very popular option as pets — almost 30 percent of Australian households have cats — and can give the canines a run for their money in the
‘coolest pet of all time’ contest. Cat–lovers will no doubt know this already, but these facts prove cats are incredible: THEY FALL WELL Due to cats reaching terminal velocity at heights above five metres, they can fall from great heights, absorb the impact of the landing, and survive. They don’t necessarily walk away unscathed, though, only alive. Please don’t throw your cat from the roof to test this theory; just trust science.
THEIR EARS ARE NUTS They have over 20 muscles just to control the movement of their ears. This lets their ears swivel independently, pin–pointing a sound accurately — to within 76 millimetres — from almost a metre away. THEY ARE CHATTY Cats can make an incredible variety of sounds — more than a hundred, in fact — compared to the meagre 10 managed by dogs. And, as if to show off, the frequency of their purr is the same at which muscles and bones repair themselves (they literally sing themselves better). THEY ARE SMART A cat’s brain is about 90 per cent similar to that of humans, their cerebral cortex has roughly 140 million neurons more than that of dogs, and their brains have 1000 times more data storage capacity than an iPad.

Beginner tips for paddle boarding
Paddle boarding can be difficult, but with these five tips you will be well on your way.
By BODY+SOUL
A
lthough you probably will fall off the board a few times, these five tips will get you off to a good start:
TIP 1 PICK A WIDER BOARD
The wider the board, the more stable it is. Select a wide board that is at least 30 inches wide.
TIP 2 PRACTICE IN FLAT WATER
Find some flat water, like a lake or bay area, to test your balance.
TIP 4 PADDLE STRAIGHT AHEAD
Paddle evenly on each side to avoid paddling the board in circles.
TIP 5 BE PREPARED TO FALL OFF
When you do fall off (and you will!) make sure you fall away from the board. Wear a leg leash to avoid losing your board
TIP 3 HOLD THE PADDLE CORRECTLY
Hold the paddle with your top hand on the handle and your bottom hand comfortably down the shaft.

REDEFINING AN ICON THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER WITH LOCAL LAND ROVER ENTHUSIAST JAMIE ROBERTS | @JCRME @TRIPPIN_DEFENDER
Local Land Rover Defender enthusiast and photographer, Jamie Roberts, recently swapped his 2012 Puma 110 Defender for the all-new 2020 110 Defender for a weekend. Let’s find out what he thought of the new generation Defender. What is it that drew you to Defender?
They are a legend and an icon with a history of capability and durability. The entire success has been founded on making vehicles that are so capable they go well beyond the needs of most regular people. They have always been built for purpose, and whilst they have also had their little quirks, it’s hard to not drive one without a grin on your face. What were your initial thoughts of the new model?
It’s the Defender brought into the 21st century. The new Defender represents the evolution of an old design, and whilst from an arm's length distance,
they seem to be nothing like the previous models, there are a lot of little signature elements brought over to the new model. What surprised you most about the new Defender?
The utterly ridiculous level of refinement, it's really obvious the number of hours that have gone into both the design and testing of this new model.
fact that not only have they brought the capability over from the older model, but it's now combined with an amazing on-road ride. Whilst some old school Land Rover nuts will hesitate to accept this change, I really believe a more in-depth look and test drive will definitely change their mind. Experience the new Land Rover Defender for yourself with a test drive at Toowoomba Land Rover.
What did you think of the off-road capability of the new model?
The fact that they are still incredibly capable off-road and the level of technology in the new model is mind-blowing. It’s really good to see the refinement and comfort vastly improve over the older models. Do you think Land Rover have evolved the classic model well?
They have done a fantastic job of taking a classic and redefining it. The

s one of those perpetually busy driving mums, taking kids to school, appointments, sport, more sport and the occasional coast holiday, the opportunity to testdrive the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe was a tad exciting. And after a cruise around town, I can tell you the excitement was warranted. This SUV delivers the goods. It looks sexy, is highly intuitive, offers incredible safety features as well some very cool additions that you never thought you needed, but really do. Its aerodynamic design is incredibly sleek and makes for an elegant and sporty presence on the road. Soft touch doors and an automated
MOTORING
boot make child-wrangling and grocery shopping much less of a juggle, while the Mercedes-Benz badge puddle lamp from the sidestep of the car won me over without even stepping inside. No more fumbling for keys or tripping over gutters in the dark, I am a Mercedes driver now! Under the bonnet, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe runs a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine. The integrated starter-alternator (ISG) combines the starter and alternator in a powerful electric motor between engine and transmission, assisting the engine with up to 16 kW and 250 Nm of torque boost function. In overrun mode, over 80 per cent of the energy is fed back into the battery (recuperation). The ISG also allows hybrid functions such as pre-entry climate control and Silent Start which means engine starting is almost imperceptible. The result is not only fuel efficient, but an incredibly smooth ride with velvety gear shifts. It feels as though you’re gliding along
the road. From the stained wood-paneled dashboard to the ambient light piping and the incredible surround sound system, the interior cabin is impressive and totally luxurious. It feels as though everything featured has a higher purpose: to make your time on board as pleasant and comfortable as possible. The fascia comprises a single-frame screen, with driver information and infotainment sections. It is augmented by a projecting head-up display. The infotainment can be controlled by touch, a laptop-style trackpad or a ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control system that can perform commands like adjusting the cabin temperature, making calls, playing songs, changing ambient light colours, finding a destination or opening and closing the sunroof. Comfort is key with the kinetic front seats offering the driver and passenger almost undetectable changes in position to relieve fatigue during longer commutes. These ‘smart’ seats additionally feature seatbelts that ‘hug’
the passenger and driver to gauge a person’s size. In the event of an accident, that information will determine if and which of the nine airbags can be safely deployed. The Mercedes-Benz reputation for safety is well-known, and this model really takes it to the next level, which as a mum of small kids is super important. Cameras under the side mirrors, and at the front and back of the car, create an overhead 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings. Blind spots are revealed too, making it almost impossible not to see any little people around when coming in or out of a driveway.
The park assist feature means you’ll never miss a parallel again, which is always a bonus on those Saturday mid-morning coffee runs along Duggan Street. Highway driving is also a breeze with cruise control reading any changed traffic conditions and intuitive night lights adjusting to the traffic around you. It was tough to give this exceptional vehicle back. It’s absolutely beautiful to drive with too many features to mention. In fact, a friend of mine who recently bought one says her kids keep finding more and more cool little extras every time they go for a drive. I’m not surprised.

By KATHERINE SAMPSON Toowoomba is known for its exquisite taste in arts and culture. What you probably didn’t realise we were missing was an Indigenous art gallery, and Doolamai Designs is here to fill that void.
T
he gallery is covertly located right on the corner of Railway and Taylor streets, and houses artworks created by local Indigenous artist Domi Doolamai. When you experience Domi’s work you might be a bit confused by how far the artworks stray from stereotypical Indigenous art; packed full of colour and imagination with strong ties to the Indigenous dreamtime - each piece of work showing immense attention to detail even on the largest canvas. However, Domi’s artworks aren’t restricted to the average canvas, but rather a canvas scroll.
62 NOVEMBER 2020 | TOOWOOMBA STYLE
ARTS |
“I do that because in ancient Roman times, they used to have the scroll to tell a story,” Domi says. The 53-year-old is a mixture of Italian and the Indigenous Kalkaddon people, and so finds it appropriate and effective in his role of storytelling. “It’s like a scroll; and I like to tell a story because I think it’s a visual aid too. “I want you to come walk with me in my dreaming, I want you to see the painting, I want you to be there in the morning and the night times. These are the most spiritual times for all of us, when you’re sitting back looking across a lake or across a dam you’ve got that time to contemplate that spirituality of who we are and where we are, and I’m proud to put that in my paintings” he says. When it comes to the colour of the art, Domi is passionate about the use of all colours of paint. His ‘go to’ medium are acrylics that he sources from Murrays Art & Framing here in Toowoomba. “I’m a strong believer in colour; I see the colours in everything and I just think it’s important to throw colour in there. “I love my traditional colours, I love the cultural aspect of it, but I also like to experiment and just use colour; I think that’s the most important thing,” Domi says. He explains there is no written rule: saying there were never colours in Australia prior to colonisation. “I think a lot of people are frightened that everybody thinks that Indigenous culture has to be red, yellow, black, white. That’s it, I’m the opposite. “I’m sure if they had access to the colours I use today, they would have used them.” One standout element throughout Domi’s artworks is that of a vibrant blue butterfly. This being Domi’s grandmother’s totem and the glyph of the gallery, an ode and sign of respect to his late elder which is manifested into every painting. Gallery director, and daughter of Domi, Cara Green was happy that her father’s work is now finally being given the space and recognition it deserves. “He’s been painting for over 27 years now, so constantly seeing those artworks growing up and not having anywhere for them to go, it’s peaceful and nice,” she says. Domi’s art is that piece of culture Toowoomba has been lacking for far too long. Cara told Style there just aren’t enough places to see Indigenous art.
“
“It’s very limited, so it’s good that we’ve got this here (the gallery) so we can actually share it with people. “It’s a physical place to go, and it gives Dad a place to paint; and I have a place to just do everything else,” Cara says. Domi paints from sunrise to sunset and anywhere he can – Cara says her father lives and breathes his art. “He literally doesn’t stop, we’re open from Monday to Sunday, except Wednesdays. “But even then… he’s always painting. “He’s at home, he paints at home. “He comes here, he paints here, morning and night.” If you head down to 2B Taylor Street to check out the gallery, be sure to meet Cara and their mini-manager, Cara’s youngest son (2-years-old) manning the front desk, if you walk a little bit further, you’ll see where the magic really is made, and experience Domi painting right in the middle of the Doolamai Designs Art Gallery. As they prepare for their first birthday, Doolamai Designs Art Gallery, Cara and Domi invite the public down to see in person the remarkable artworks being created. You’ll also find other work from contributing artists including jewellery, traditional Pitjantjatjara artefacts and hand-carved didgeridoos; as well as other smaller gift options like postcards, t-shirts and bags. Doolamai Designs also takes on commission work relating to any Indigenous style. The gallery opened almost a year ago and is preparing to celebrate its first birthday on December 1. Cara says they aren’t quite sure how they plan on celebrating yet, but keep an eye out on their social media to find out more - @doolamaidesigns on Instagram or through their Facebook page Doolamai Designs.
In our language, marangu goochu means come walk with us, and that’s our motto.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PAINTING? I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. My family are very creative and supportive, it’s something I can’t imagine ever being able to live without doing. I started painting more seriously about 10 years ago.
There’s so much happening across Toowoomba’s galleries, theatres, schools and various creative groups that we have decided to give the arts its own page. If you have any art events get in touch through our social media @stylemagazinestoowoomba
WHAT SORT OF ART DO YOU FOCUS ON? I focus on creating highly detailed realistic paintings. I like to create an image through making a collage either digitally or through cutting out found imagery to create a unique composition. A narrative is created through introducing a new element to an image which is open to the viewers interpretation. It is usually a juxtaposition of two elements that don’t fit together in reality such as a black and white photograph paired with a sundae ice cream. My artworks are based on creating a fantasy using romantic images of the past, present and future.
CREATIVE INTERPRETATION BY MAREE CAMERON From Saturday, November 7, to Sunday, December 6. Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery
HOW DO YOU GET STARTED ON A PIECE? As my artworks are very meticulous, I have a specific routine I like to follow. First, I create a collage either on my laptop or by cutting out images. Then I grid up the new composition and draw it onto a carefully primed canvas. Then I spend many hours painting, building up layers of thin paint to create depth. It is a long process I have fine-tuned but each painting still has its challenges. It is a satisfying process and rewarding when you finally let go and call an artwork finished.
On display at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is a new body of work incorporating pastels, watercolours and acrylics by local artist Maree Cameron. Cameron has a passion to create and is drawn to moments of introspection with the natural world. Creative Interpretation presents works by Cameron that focus on her love of the country, wildlife and the special moments she has shared with both. Gallery open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 3.30pm and Sundays 1pm to 4pm. WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO PAINT? I have taught myself many things I currently do through trial and error, but I did also complete a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) at RMIT in Melbourne.
GAIA BY LET VAN VONDEREN
WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO DO A COMMISSION FOR? The first person that come to mind is the Queen! Haha, I think she is an amazing woman, I have so much respect for her as a leader. Her commitment to her role and all that she has endured is inspiring.

Style Artist chats to
Samaneh Mohtadi
Tell us a little about yourself… I was born in Persia, land of art, history, music and poetry; moved to Australia with my husband to experience a new journey on this beautiful land. I now live in Brisbane. Besides my Master of Information Technology, painting has always been my passion. Describe your style? Realistic mixed with my inner imagination. Watercolour by its way that water runs and carries the paint with it, gives me the opportunity to tell my story about life with freedom. My style is a dynamic mix of my perspective and skills alongside with my technique of “wet on wet”. What inspires you? Mother nature. Why do you enjoy painting? For me, painting is a window to a new world, the way of telling stories. I enjoy simplifying lively elements and depict them through stirring colours, and the smooth movement of water. I like people to feel joy, hope and refreshment when they look at my paintings, as beauty is essential for living. Some highlights of your artistic life? Exhibiting nationally and internationally in famous art exhibitions such as VIZart Self-portrait Albania. Being mentioned as an emerging artist in Sunday Mail 2019. Medal in top 50 Genius watercolour artists Olympiart (International Watercolour Society) along with other national and international prizes. Meeting talented and famous artists around the world. What do you like about Toowoomba? For me, Toowoomba is the essence of inland Queensland, city of flowers and art with supportive people. Art lovers from many different places come to Grammar Art Show to enjoy the art show and purchase artworks. What is your dream goal or project? Always giving people joy and peace with my paintings and keep learning and be creative. Also, I’d like to exhibit in famous Museums around the world and have my own Gallery.

23 NOV - 21 DEC Ahh the eager hunter chasing career goals! No one does it with ease like a Sagittarian; you practically have it as one of the driving forces of your skill set. Aim high, work hard, and the rewards just come naturally. Big projects may appear daunting at first but with the right people you can move mountains, so go get them - it is for the taking.
LEO
24 JUL - 23 AUG Be prepared for plenty of fun this November, just how much fun depends on your budget, you may have to imagine the champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget but if anyone can fake it until they make it, Leo can. Otherwise this month is looking good for investigating new hobbies so if looking to learn to belly dance this is the month to go hard or go home.
CAPRICORN
22 DEC - 20 JAN Don’t be stubborn this month as it will serve you no end of dramas, you need to take time to ensure that your family are reminded how much they mean to you. It might be a challenging month, but you will sail through it with determination and strength. Next month looks decidedly better so if you can hang on through November just keep plodding along.
AQUARIUS
21 JAN - 19 FEB No one beats an Aquarius! That is your mantra for November. Taking your life back is easy just get back on the bike and pedal. Exercise is important for the mind; it creates some amazing feel-good endorphins helping you cope with stress. Your health is important to you - the idea of sitting around doing nothing is unheard of in an Aquarian world. More power to you.
PISCES
20 FEB - 20 MAR Pisces, you will have a fantastic November. Nothing beats spending time with the people you love in your life. Family is important; nothing beats a cuddle with your family including the four-legged kind. Could be time for a road trip to rejuvenate your soul. So hit the beach and bask in the glorious sunshine just don’t forget the sunscreen.
VIRGO
SCORPIO
24 OCT - 22 NOV Happy Birthday Scorpio! This month brings laughs and happy family memories for a lifetime. If approaching a major milestone don’t worry, age is only a number; you are judged by who you are not by how old you are approaching. Hire a jumping castle and bounce to your heart’s content - be happy and enjoy life to the fullest.
TAURUS
21 APR - 21 MAY November is significant for your sign this year as it is really when the planets align, and everything falls into place. Career prospects look fantastic so if you are seeking a wage rise now is the time to ask. Promotion could also be on the cards, so it really is a win win situation.
ARIES
21 MAR - 20 APR No one said that life was going to be easy, yes sometimes
we let things get on top of us that really should stay firmly locked away. However, this month is time to let go of the old bad habits, taking a fresh new approach to fitness, health and discipline. If you have been slacking off and not going to the gym now is time to renew the membership.
GEMINI
22 MAY - 22 JUN Spend some time planning that perfect party! I mean, it is not too far away so the more planning the better.
Think overflowing glasses of champagne, canapes, gourmet delights to grace your taste buds. It will be the party that everyone will remember putting you high on guest lists for the next few months. November promises to be a bit slow which is great considering all that planning that needs to happen.
CANCER
23 JUN - 23 JUL Cancerians will be spending more time travelling than ever before. It could be to and from a new workplace or packing
24 AUG - 24 SEPT Virgo will spend November wondering if they will be able to cope with another year of same old same old. Don’t despair, you will only have these feelings for a couple of weeks then you will be back in the swing of things. We all have down days, but the best therapy ever is to get your hands dirty, so get out in the garden and plant some trees. They will keep your spirits up for years to come.

here’s a lighter feel in the air throughout November. A sense of heading for freedom for many. A breathe of fresh air. This is a good time to connect with Mother Earth and stay grounded. Get your hands into the earth. Start something new after the heaviness of October; thanks to Mercury in retrograde, which starts moving forward on the November 4, so communications will be a lot easier. If you have had problems in this area throughout October you know why. This is also a good time to get together with your loved ones whether it be family, friends, or your partner. There’s a sense of hope this month with many wishes being granted, so I hope you have made some that will bring joy to your heart. Do something special this month, even if it is baking a cake for your neighbour or just saying hello to people with a smile, not only does this uplift your energy but for others also. It really feels like the heavy energies of 2020 are starting to lift as we come closer to the end of the year. Start working on your dreams and goals, through your heart, for the year 2021. See and feel them manifesting as we all have the power to create what we want in life. This is also a good month to recognise any repeating patterns or if you feel like you’re going round and on a roundabout with someone or something - it’s time to see this pattern and let it go. Be here now in the present moment, don’t worry about what’s to come or what has been. Forgive, love and acceptance are the key to moving forward on your path. Stay positive, optimistic and love accept the changes that are happening around you in your life.
