maleny Whoever says a picture paints a thousand words obviously hasn’t laid eyes on the spectacular views from Maleny, because a view this breathtaking will do just that - take your breath away. Put simply, there are no words nor postcard pictures to do the Maleny Hinterland justice. Located 450 metres above sea level, the combination of lush rolling hills and a winding creek provide the ultimate backdrop for a picture perfect outing. No wonder Maleny is one of the most popular wedding destinations in Australia. The story of Maleny begins long before any European settlers set foot on Australian shores. Aboriginals were the first people to call the mountainous region home. They would make their camp at Obi Obi Creek, named after the Aboriginal warrior Ubie Ubie.
Nearest Information Centre Maleny Visitor Information Centre | Ph 07 5499 9033 Maleny was officially proclaimed a town in 1891 and was a timber town until the 1920s. Since then Maleny locals have used the fertile land for fruit orchards, as well as becoming the ideal place for boutique dairies. The bustling town offers a sophisticated choice of places to eat and drink, an abundance of award-winning local cheese, ice cream, dairy and other produce farms and factories, wineries, galleries and art and craft stores. From the enchanting scents, fresh flavours, pure air and of course spectacular views, you really must see, feel and taste Maleny’s goodness to believe it.
EAT Bursting with an abundance of fine dining restaurants and charming cafes, Maleny is well known for its fresh, locally grown produce and award-winning dairy. But what is some cheese without
a glass of wine? (Or three) The local winery crafts exclusive artisan wines available at the cellar door or online.
SHOP Maleny is home to some of the most creative souls. From beautiful jewellery, enchanting soaps, colourful clothing and unique woodwork, many local craftspeople showcase their creations at the Maleny RSL Sunday markets from 8am until 2pm. Maleny also has a range of holistic wellness gurus. Whether its acupuncture, energy healing or a soothing facial, you will discover a wide scope of wellness options to suit every health need.
STAY Escape to a tranquil haven and stay among the trees in a private cottage, relaxing spa or romantic B&B.
Baroon Pocket was a popular meeting place where tribe members would gather bunya nuts for their Bonyi Bonyi gatherings. The first European thought to settle in the glorious Blackall Range was escaped convict, James Doris, in the early 1840s. Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt soon followed and the area quickly became home to many European settlers and became a midway point between Brisbane and the goldfields of Gympie. 18

nambour Lying in the sub-tropical region of the Sunshine Coast and at the base of the Blackall Range, Nambour is derived from the aboriginal word, “naamba”, referring to the red flower bottlebrush. Encompassing 14.9sq km of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the town was named after Nambour cattle station that was settled in 1891 after the rail link to Brisbane was complete. Closing at the end of 2001, the track and signal lighting still remains on display through the centre of Mill, Currie and Howard Streets, emphasizing the settlements rich history. From the first settlement in 1870, Nambour has made a gentle transition from characteristic vintage township to a coffee lovers hipster hamlet. Located 101km from the city lights of Brisbane, Nambour offers the facilities and comfortable lifestyle of a regional town, minus

hinterland swimming holes Beach there, done that? The Sunshine Coast has amazing natural beauty and secret (not-so-secret) swimming holes to enjoy when temperatures start to rise. A word of caution first, do not dive into rock pools, no matter how deep they may seem. Swim with a friend or groups and use caution after heavy rainfall. Finally, do not swim if water is flowing swiftly, especially if spilling into lower pools. Wappa Falls, Yandina
Just outside Yandina, Wappa Falls provides a relaxing place to unwind including a big grassy area for kids and a playground. An easy walk past the dam will bring you to Wappa Falls where there are cool rock pools for swimming and usually loads of wildlife including turtles and birds. Take Nambour-Yandina Road and turn onto Wappa Falls Road. Turn into Wappa Dam (past Wappa Falls Observatory). Booloumba Falls, Conondale
Booloumba Falls (meaning butterfly in Gubbi Gubbi language) is a popular waterhole which spills over multiple rock pools into one large pool at the base. However, it can be a little bit tricky to both find and access: you’ll need a 4WD and some general idea of where you’re headed. Follow Booloumba Creek Road (off Maleny-Kenilworth Road) until it becomes gravel and reaches the Conondale National Park entrance.
each way to the falls. That’s a full day in itself, but if you have time, side track to the old gold mine site and cairn sculpture by Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy. Kondalilla Falls, Montville
When it’s time to get away from the beach, it’s time to head to Kondalilla Falls just outside Mapleton. Gubbi Gubbi language for ‘rushing water’, the falls produce a unique swimming hole area suitable for the whole family. The Falls circuit will take 2-3 hours to complete and includes over 100 steps so take your time and enjoy the scenery both on the way in and back out. Take Flaxton Drive onto Kondalilla Falls Road and follow for about 2km to the car park. Gardener’s Falls, Maleny
Off Obi Lane South, Gardener’s Falls is an easy 10 minute walk from the carpark, taking you alongside the creek to a waterhole oasis. There’s also a rope swing for the brave. Turn off the Maleny-Landsborough Road about 3km from Maleny town centre. Follow Obi Lane South for 1.5km.
Drive past all camping and day-use areas until you reach the fourth and final area, where an incline to the left is accompanied by a sign pointing (roughly) to Booloumba Falls. From here it’s another 10 or so kilometres to reach the car park and day-use area. Artists Cascades, Conondale
The little-known Artists Cascades are small cascades which flow into a large rock pool, perfect for hot summer days. From Booloumba Creek day use area, allow plenty of time (plus water, food, hat and sunscreen) for a 5km trek 34
