Mayoral welcome — Mayor Paul Antonio, Toowoomba Regional Council THE Carnival of Flowers is one of our most loved community events, a vibrant festival that appeals not just to our proud residents, but to national and international visitors alike. Spring in Toowoomba never disappoints and nature once again has set the stage for a wonderful Carnival of Flowers in 2016. This year’s Carnival calendar is a cracker and there really is something

for everyone. Highlights include The Chronicle Garden Competition, Grand Central Floral Parade, Ergon Energy Flower Food and Wine Festival and Heritage Bank Live Concert Series. But there are also many, many community and horticultural events that bring people together to celebrate the wonder of spring. A heartfelt thank you to our

sponsors and the scores of volunteers who, for 67 years, have ensured the Carnival continues to thrive. Whether you’re a local or you’re visiting from afar, I extend a very warm and proud welcome to the 2016 Carnival of Flowers! The Carnival is an icon of our community and it’s been delighting locals and visitors alike for more than 60 years. Heritage is delighted to be in its 19th year as a major sponsor of Carnival.

It’s our way of thanking the community for supporting us. After all, just like the Carnival, Heritage Bank is also a Toowoomba icon that has been a big part of this community for many years. Community botanical events THE Carnival of Flowers brings many beautiful Things, including the many botanical events. Here are the renowned favourites for 2016. Toowoomba Clivia Show When: Friday 16 to Wednesday September 21, 9am to 5pm daily Where: Horticultural Pavilion at Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE, 100 Bridge Street With perfect growing conditions and an enthusiastic group of clever horticulturalists, Toowoomba is famous for its clivias, including some very rare varieties. This is why clivia lovers from all over Australia and overseas look forward to our very special clivia show. The display will feature award-winning orange, yellow, red, pink and, if viewers are lucky, cream clivias. For enquiries, call 0413 136 861. Toowoomba Geranium Show When: Saturday 17 and Sunday September 18 Spring is peak flowering time for geraniums and pelargoniums, so this beautiful display is bound to astound crowds. Toowoomba Orchid Society Spring Orchid Show When: Friday 16 to Tuesday September 20, 8.30am to 4pm Where: St Paul’s Church Hall, corner of Phillip and James Sts The Orchid Society’s spring show will exhibit their largest display of orchids in south-east Queensland and will offer orchids for sale, craft stalls and light refreshments.

Annual Spring Show and Sale When: Saturday 17 to Monday September 19, 8am to 4pm daily Where: Sacred Heart School Hall, corner of Tor and North Sts Admission is $3 and children under 14 are free — come along and enjoy a great few days. Toowoomba Bonsai Group Annual Show When: Friday 16 to Sunday September 18, 9am to 4pm Where: Newtown Rose Cottage, Holberton St The annual bonsai show depicts a variety of beautiful bonsai trees and demonstrations. All types of bonsai from alpine to tropical grow well in the Toowoomba climate. Entry is $3, and children under 15 are free. Please note that some tours may require prior bookings, so please check with the society beforehand.

Major events The Chronicle Garden Competition When: September 16 to 25, 9am to 5pm daily With around 100 stunning private gardens entered across 40 different categories, this year’s Chronicle Garden Competition is set to be a true celebration of spring. Entry to the gardens are free, and visitors will be delighted with the colour, design and variety of spring blossoms, Australian natives and edible gardens. There’s a hop-on hop-off bus that visits a selection of award-winning gardens. Pick up is at Kearney Springs and Queens Park. Buses leave every 20 minutes and cost $5 each time you board. The Chronicle Exhibition Gardens When: September 16 to 25, 9am to 5pm daily These are beautiful private gardens lovingly planted and open to the public to raise money for charities. With a line-up of fresh floral floats, street performers and carnival characters, the parade is visually spectacular as it showcases what everyone loves about life in the Toowoomba community. Ergon Energy Flower Food and Wine Festival When: Friday 16 to Sunday September 18 Three delicious days of flavours, produce and wines fresh from the pastures, orchards and vineyards of the region. Meet garden designer Charlie Albone and celebrity chef Miguel. You’ll also enjoy floral displays and live music with the Heritage Bank Live Concert Series. Community events St Luke’s Flower & Music Festival When: Friday 16 to Wednesday, September 21, 9am to 4pm daily Where: St Luke’s Anglican Church in Herries St Entry by gold coin donation. In the heart of the Toowoomba CBD is the beautiful, historic St Luke’s Anglican Church. Each year St Luke’s celebrates the start of spring with magnificent floral displays by the Toowoomba Floral Art Group. There are also plant and produce stalls as well as music concerts daily from 12.30pm. Drop into the hall and see a range of arts and crafts by local groups and just enjoy the lovely gardens of St Luke’s. For enquiries call 4639 1910. Sixty hanging baskets, lovingly created by artisans and creative types will be a riot of colour and cleverness. The design competition is supported by Yates and Cobb+Co Museum. Teapot Extravaganza When: Saturday 17 to Saturday, September 24 Where: St Alban’s Church Hall, Cnr Anzac Ave and Hill St Entry is $3 per person. The event will feature more than 500 fabulous teapots, tea towels and other lovely tea things. Many of the treasures are collector’s items and others are just for fun! Devonshire tea and drinks are available with a sausage sizzle on weekends.

Get the right tools for your garden SPRING is finally here, which means the garden is in a prime position to grow beauties for spring and summer. However, to do this you need the right tools. These are the staple gardening tools that are a must-have in you rshed this spring. Hoe Using a hoe makes it a lot easier to dig garden beds in preparation for planting, and removing deep-set vegetation. Gloves There are a number of different gloves you can get, but the best ones often have silicone fingertips which provides an easier grip when gardening. Shovel It just makes life easier. Pruners You can get pruners that are very comfortable and easy to use. When you prune, it allows room for new foliage to come through. Lightweight trimmer These lightweight trimmers are great for hedging, shaping plants and keeping everything neat and tidy. Pitchfork and a wheelbarrow Generally a steel pitchfork is better for bringing up heavier and larger things in the garden, and a wheelbarrow is obviously for carting things around. Rake For getting together all those pesky leaves. Best to get a heavier duty, steel one, because the plastic ones break quite easily. Fertiliser spreader A fertiliser spreader makes life a whole lot easier when you’re trying to keep your lawn pristine and beautiful. By using one of these, you will be distributing the fertiliser evenly. Make sure it’s not too heavy and easy to move around. Patrick James Date: Saturday, 8 October Time: 9pm Free Show

Not Patrick Jane, Hayden James, Jarryd James, or The Voice winner from Ireland, but Sydney’s own singer-songwriter PATRICK JAMES will be front and centre when he takes his solo tour off the beaten track this spring. Throughout September and October, Patrick will embark on a 14 show run, taking in capitals and regional towns along the way. After honing his craft as a busker and touring extensively with the cream of the Australian music scene Patrick was always keen to put on a tour that deviates from the regular touring circuit, “It’s been a long time in the making but I’ve always wanted to go and revisit the small towns I was lucky enough to play in whilst supporting the likes of Boy & Bear and Pete Murray. For the most part they were regional towns and I made a lot of good friends playing there and they’ve been very patient”.

Anna Bartlett on unleashing your inner artist ANNA Bartlett believes there’s an artist in all of us waiting to be unleashed. Now you have the opportunity to create your own stunning artwork, and it’s even more fun when you’re guided by Anna, whether it’s at one of her super popular studio Paint Alongs, through one of her online eCourses, or through her book, ‘Painting Party’. “My studio Paint Alongs have become very popular with friends, hens nights and professional development days — they’re often booked out within hours of me releasing dates and times,” Anna said. “I hate to disappoint people, so I have developed a few online Paint Alongs which can be done at home, individually or with friends and family members joining in.” Anna’s eCourses are renowned for being packed with information and inspiration, having wonderful feedback from people who have participated in them. “They are very beginner-friendly and include step-by-step videos, so you can paint along with me and pause me when needed!” Anna said. “At the end, you’ll have a beautiful painting to hang on your wall and hopefully you’ll be inspired to keep learning — who knows what wonderful talents will emerge.” Anna has been painting for as long as she can remember. Many locals will remember the hand-painted handbags she sold at the Queens Park Markets years ago. Her vibrant murals at Toowoomba Hospital, Breastscreen and local childcare centres are a source of constant joy for staff, patients and students. Her book, ‘Painting Party’ is available at The Book Tree on Ruthven Street. Anna has come up with the perfect way to combine a love of art with champagne while raising money for charity — it’s the Pop Up Paint Along supporting Toowoomba Hospital Foundation on September 18 at St Saviours Hall. WITH their luscious green leaves and big vibrant blooms it’s easy to see how mere mortals fall under their spell. Colour and character at Cobb+Co Museum this Carnival

SPRING has sprung and Cobb+Co Museum have a blooming festival program with something for the whole family. Back by popular demand, the Yates Hanging Basket Display features 60 spectacular hanging baskets created by community members from the Toowoomba region as part of a design competition. Local artisans and green thumbs as well as school children, TAFE students and other community groups have all taken part to help the

Museum put a unique twist on carnival festivities. The Yates Hanging Basket Display will be on show at Cobb+Co Museum 16 -25 September, 10am -4pm daily. But expect to see more than just flowers when you visit the Museum during carnival time! As part of the Queensland Museum Network and home to the National Carriage Collection, visitors to Cobb+Co Museum will discover a variety of interactive displays, exhibits and heritage trade

School gardens show off best in region THE 2016 Chronicle Schools garden competition was an outstanding success this year, and every one of the 23 school entries should be congratulated on their participation, and in particular, for their enthusiasm towards this wonderful regional event. Every school, whether a first time entrant, or back in the competition for the ‘umpteenth’ time, should be extremely proud of their students, teachers, parents and grounds staff — in essence everyone who took the time to work on getting these gardens up to what was a very high horticultural standard. There is no doubt that one of the major benefits of having school children involved in gardening is the development of not only their appreciation of the natural world and all its processes and interactions, but most importantly their attitude towards caring for, and nurturing, all living things. What is learnt at these early ages is carried through for life. Thank you to each and every student, teacher, and school gardener for showing me your wonderful veggie beds, chook houses, native bees, worm farms, tyre planters, flower beds, hedges, majestic oaks, scarecrows, totems, indigenous gardens, yarning circles, fruit trees, minions, peace gardens and pineapples, to name a few highlights of my three days of judging. Colourful composition secures wins again For 26 years, Bob and Val Ford have been in The Chronicle Garden Competition — and they’re Grand Champions once again. “Buses have always stopped to look at our garden, so eventually we were convinced to enter The Chronicle Garden Competition, and 26 years later we’re still in it — it keeps us young, and we’re rewarded with colour,” says Bob Ford. Bob and Val Ford have thrown their creative nature into their beautiful Rangeville garden, making an immaculate artwork for everyone to enjoy, winning City Grand Champion for the second year running. “It’s a great passion of ours — I think it’s incredible how a seedling can develop from something so small,” Bob said. “If I don’t do something right, I don’t do it at all — I’m a perfectionist.” While Bob loves his gardening, he in no way plays down the amount of work it takes — particularly if you wish to be a grand champion. “It takes a week to plant, which is generally done in the second week of May,” he said. “Then you have to water, and organise your fertiliser. “In June and July there’s a lot of work such as covering for frost, preparing for pests, fungi, debudding... and I mow three times a week — Val and I are very busy!” he laughs. Bob is renowned for his lawn and has been for many years. He has a secret mixture for making his lawn just right, and absolutely no one else knows it. “People ask, but I’m not giving it away!” Bob smiles.

Bob and Val both have a love of conifers, so they are always coming up with new ways to fit them into their garden in unique and different ways. “Our garden is forever changing, and no two years are the same,” says Bob. Bob and Val have a new Japanese area in their garden that is very colourful and fun, however they do have a particular taste that they like in their garden. “I don’t like garish colours — I think you have to have whites in your gardens, and soft, muted tones are necessary,” Bob says. “I think your garden has to have a flow — it’s like you’re creating rooms, and you want it all to go well together.” Bob and Val treasure their garden and their love of the Darling Downs region, and are very happy to show their gardens off to visitors and locals alike. “We’re called the Garden City and I don’t want lose that — I’m very proud of this city’s image,” says Bob. The Chronicle Garden Competition judge Clint Kenny was extremely impressed with the Ford’s garden. “They had excellent plant health and great structure and design to their garden,” Clint says. “The whole garden had terrific attention to detail.” Bob and Val Ford are very deserving Grand Champions for The Chronicle Garden Competition 2016.

Unique and vibrant garden is loved by all Their patriotic and unique garden has earned Kevin and Dianna Drew the title of 2016 City Reserve Grand Champions. KEVIN and Dianna Drew have created something truly spectacular this year, stunning visitors, locals and judges of The Chronicle Garden Competition. With their distinctive patriotism, clean design, love of colour and stunning, balancing elements, it’s no wonder the Drews have had such success in the competition. “A garden is an individual thing, everyone has their own ideas, and that’s not a bad thing — you wouldn’t want to visit a garden and see them all the same,” says Kevin. “We do our own thing, we don’t have advisors, so the landscaping, the design and what we plan is all our own ideas. “We built our waterfalls, did our own earthworks, we have our own map of Australia and we haven’t seen anyone else with that.” The Drews have recently added some stencils of kangaroos on their lawn. However, Kevin doesn’t downplay how much hard work is involved in creating a garden as spectacular as theirs, noting that the upkeep and the development is huge. In a very unique and touching design to their garden, Kevin and Dianna have made it

suitable for people with a disability to visit as well. “I don’t think that’s taken into account, and I think everyone should be able to see things like this,” Kevin said. “We cater to everyone to visit our garden with particular railings and things, so whether they’re handicapped, or if wet weather concerns someone more than usual as a slipping hazard we have the right paths. “It makes people happy, and that’s what we want to do — I don’t think that’s something that’s often looked at when designing gardens.” The Chronicle Garden Competition judge Clint Kenny was very impressed by the Drews’ garden, noting its individuality. “First of all, the plant health of the Drews’ garden was terrific,” Clint said. “They had wonderful scale, and overall impression of their garden was great. “It was really nice to see their personalities come through it.” The Drews put an excellent amount of work into their garden at 17 Ward St, Highfields, and are very worthy winners of City Reserve Grand Champions.

True country garden takes out Grand Champion Meet The Chronicle Country Garden Competition winners Paul and Noela Rubb, and their lovely garden TOOWOOMBA-based horticulturist Brian Sams judged all of the country gardens entered this year in The Chronicle Garden Competition. Mr Sams saw some lovely gardens which were very competitive in most sections, but it was Paul and Noela Rubb who took out Grand Champion. The couple describe their garden as very country or like a homestead. “We’ve used tree stumps, old machinery, things you would expect to see in a country or homestead garden,” Mrs Rubb said. “It’s a true country garden.” Out of the past six years, the couple only missed entering once — last year due to being away. Mrs Rubb said it took a little while for them to enter their garden in the competition. “We had people visiting our garden and asking why we didn’t enter,” she said. “I said we weren’t good enough but we finally got up the confidence to enter six years ago. “I think entering the competition is addictive.” Mrs Rubb has always been an avid gardener, but for Mr Rubb

it took a little while. “We used to be dairy farmers, so I never had time to do gardening,” Mr Rubb said. “After our son left school and started working, I got involved. “I like the challenge it brings to make the garden better and better.” Mrs Rubb is completely sold on the past-time. “I just love being outside,” she explained. “I’d prefer to be outside than inside.” The winning pair urge other country gardeners to enter next year’s competition. “If you only make the effort, people come in to see your garden,” Mr Rubb said. The couple also encourage city people to come out to the country and see their garden. “We have to grow hardier plants, so people can learn about that if they come and see all the country gardens,” Mrs Rubb said. “Plus it’s so much easier to get a park in the country than in the city,” she laughed. Competition judge Clint Kenny shares his winning garden tips THIS year’s Chronicle Garden Competition judge Clint Kenny has plenty of knowledge to share with green thumb residents, however the single most important thing is enjoyment. “Your garden is a personal space; it should be what you love,” Clint said. There are a few things Clint looks for in a winning garden. Good design and structure are paramount as they set the tone for the space. Evergreen elements that give you a garden all year round are also important, whether native, exotic or perennial. Annuals can be included alongside existing features such as pots, statues or existing plantings. Allocating room for vegetables is also a great idea for a functional and beautiful garden. Overall plant health is also at the top of Clint’s list, as he looks for plants that are thriving and looking their best in the conditions of each garden. “It’s important to select plants that are suited to the climate of the garden. “Every site is different so it’s up to the skill of the gardener in their nurturing of the plant and also in their plant selection.” Clint advises to think carefully about what categories you wish to enter in The Chronicle Garden Competition as you may be able to tweak your garden accordingly for a better

chance at success in this particular section. “Adopt sustainable garden practices, including being water wise and being careful of the environment such as using organic fertilisers and soil conditioning,” he said. “Good soil preparation for instance will make gardening a lot easier in the long run, and will show in the condition and health of your plants.” To encourage wildlife a bird bath or a pond or stream will encourage birds and lizards and other smaller animals or flowering plants to draw bees. Make sure you’re not using harsh insecticides or pesticides if you want to encourage fauna in the garden. “I guess every gardener’s dream is to create something that not only looks beautiful but is also healthy.” And of course, when preparing a garden for a competition, Clint is an advocate of trial and error — when to dead-head plants, how certain breeds will react to conditions — a lot of it is simply experience, he believes. “Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the first time, it’s trial and error and will change year after year depending on rainfall, climate etc.” Most importantly of all however, Clint believes the garden must be a place that you enjoy. “If you’re a slave to it you will lose interest and not want to be there.” “Create a garden that suits you and your lifestyle.” The Chronicle Garden Competition city judge Clint Kenny. THE Chronicle Garden Competition judge and co-ordinators got around in style this year with the loan of a beautiful Jaguar from Wippells Autos. New judge to the competition, landscape designer Clint Kenny, had the challenging task of rating the 83 city gardens. Mr Kenny said all the gardens he saw were of a high standard and showed strong design elements. “Every garden is going to be different based on who nurtured it,” he said at the beginning of the judging. “I want to see that personality shine through.” Because there were such a range of categories up for judging, Mr Kenny looked for a striking overall design to decide the winners. “A good design will allow space for annuals and you’ll see a

good combination of annual and evergreen together to create the garden itself,” he said. As a first-time judge Mr Kenny said he had a fresh perspective as he had not visited the gardens before. He certainly travelled between gardens in luxury, with the loan of a Jaguar XE from Wippells Autos to The Chronicle for judging. The Chronicle Garden Competition co-ordinator Kristy Hayes was sold on the car by the time it was returned. “It has certainly got its fair share of attention,” Mrs Hayes said. The car is the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon Jaguar has ever produced. The exterior design was created with optimum

aerodynamic efficiency and stability in mind, with very strong lightweight aluminium architecture. Build your own little terrarium world These spacesaving little plants are perfect for home or office CREATE your own eco-system by building a terrarium. Terrariums have been around since the Victorian era, resurfaced in the 70s, and have since had a revival. These simplistic, stylish and classy editions to a home are an attraction for young and old. If it is an open terrarium, you have many more options, as they can be placed in direct sunlight and their soil doesn’t have to be as moist. Most miniature houseplants will work, but some favourites include succulents, african violets, splash plant, waffle plant and earth stars. To plant, make a hole in the soil to provide room for the roots and place the plant inside. Try to avoid the leaves touching the glass, as it can cause the plant to decay. Make your own terrarium following these instructions: What you’ll need: ♦A clear glass vessel. Make sure your hand can fit in the opening, that it is clear glass for light, and that it is at least 15cm high. ♦Decorative stones ♦Horticultural charcoal ♦A coffee filter or sphagnum moss ♦Soil (cacti growing soil works well) ♦Miniature plants and/or live moss ♦OPTIONAL: miniature decorative statues, like mini lighthouses How to get it done: ♦Add 2-2.5cm of stones at the bottom of the glass vessel. ♦Next, add 7.5-10cm of moist soil on top of the filter. This allows for drainage. To make it easier, use a filter to stop it dirtying the glass. ♦Add a thin layer of charcoal on top of the stones. ♦You can now add the plant. TOOWOOMBA’S parks will be in full bloom for the Carnival of Flowers. Dozens of flowerbeds will showcase spectacular blooms across four of the main parks, with live music and other events on throughout the areas.

Laurel Bank Park Just moments from the city centre, on the corner of Herries and West Sts, is the ever-popular Laurel Bank Park. The Downs Association for the Blind garden is a feast of scents for the nose, and children love the giant caterpillar and train topiaries. Each year there is a theme to the garden beds in the upper right corner of the park grounds, with a raised platform for optimum viewing. There will also be yoga and tai chi displays this year on Saturday, September 17, from 10.30am to 11am, with a 17-peice swing band performing the same day. Clever gardeners have created a free-growing meadow in the park, so be sure to take a stroll through the colourful tulips, daisies, pansies and more. Take time out for a cup of tea or cool drink at the Croquet Club on the grounds, or enjoy a tribute to Disney musical theatre being sung and performed at 11.30am on the first Saturday of Carnival. If dancing is more your fancy, the day after from 11am there will be two outdoor dance floors. South Queensland’s top dance band, Triple Beat, will perform new vogue, old time and rock ‘n, roll style music.

Car owners get ready to show and shine for Carnival JOIN other motor enthusiasts for one of the highlights of the first Sunday of the Carnival of Flowers, September 18. The Highfields North Eastern Downs Inc Show and Shine will be hosted by the Lions at the Cabarlah Show Grounds, less than 30 minutes from the Toowoomba CBD. View dozens of cars, bikes, trucks and hotrods on display, ready for judging. Take a break and have a snack or cold drink while listening to live music from James Anderssen and his band. There will also be entertainment for the kids with face painting and a jumping castle, and a few raffles to try your luck in. There will be some fantastic prizes,

such as a photo shoot sponsored by Inside Lane Productions. All car clubs are welcome, so there is sure to be a massive variety. Entry for the Show and Shine is $20 per vehicle, which includes a show medallion and a passenger. Vehicles must be entered and parked by 10am to take part in the judging. Time to dig for summer Now is the time to get get your garden into shape before summer. It’s the time to patch lawns, improve drainage, spread mulch, plant summer vegies and flowers and install new watering systems Vegies to sow – baby squash Now that the warm weather’s reliably here, plants like baby squash will germinate from seed, grow and be ready for harvest weeks. They’re easy vegies for the home garden and taste best when fresh off the plant. And the more you pick, the more new fruit will develop. While you’re in the vegie patch, keep cutting asparagus from established plants. And early flowers on tomatoes might need help with

pollination. Shake the flower stems to open the pollen sacs and get the pollen flying around. Flowers to sow — portulaca Colourful portulacas have moisture-holding leaves that make them some of the best succulent flowers to choose for the summer garden. Portulacas just love the heat. Seed can be sown straight into the garden bed but it’s often safer to sow into pots of pre-moistened Yates Seed Raising Mix where the seeds can be carefully monitored. Cover portulaca seeds very lightly, if at all, and mist-spray regularly. What to feed Give fruit trees — such as avocado and citrus — that were fed

in late winter their second feed for the season. Wait a bit longer in cool areas. Dynamic Lifter plus Fruit Food is the perfect combination of organic and inorganic fertiliser. On Friday, September 23, participants will be picked up from Kearneys Spring at 5pm or the Empire Theatre at 5.15pm to enjoy a night of spectacular food, wine and sights finishing at 9pm. The tour will begin with canapés at Cobb+Co Museum with a tour of the museum’s Carriage Room. Indulge on crab spring rolls infused with chilli and lime, peppercorn beef gourmet petite pies, mushroom, mascarpone and toasted hazelnuts bruschetta or tomato, basil, olive and roast capsicum bruschetta. Choose from white wine, sparkling wine or beer to accompany these delicious treats. Travel to the historic Gips Restaurant, which was previously a 1860s mansion, for the main affair of either Bunya pork tenderloin, beetroot and caramelised onion, potato and thyme gratin baby spinach or the gluten free spiced lamb
