Ultimate Motoring, Off Road & Accessory Guide

Plenty covered in our first Motoring Guide By ELOUISE QUINLIVAN WELCOME to the first edition of the Motoring Guide. This edition we feature Toowoomba dealership Hughes Car Sales, who have more reason to guarantee the best after-car service with their floorman Adam Bradford recognised as the Australian winner for the Mahindra Global Tech Test Competition. This means Adam is packing his bags to compete in the International leg of the competition at the end of the month. It is a huge achievement to come this far, and it proves Adam’s skill in diagnosing and problem-solving, and his understanding of the Mahindra range is second-to-none. We wish him the best of luck and know our region will be on the map internationally, highlighting the home-grown talent found in workshops. Principal Russell Hughes said potential buyers at Hughes Car Sales will be welcome to put Adam through his paces when he returns to find out how to get the most mileage out of their vehicles as a life-long customer after purchase. Hughes Car Sales is also a recognised dealer of the Mahindra range, which is featured in this month’s pages. We hear from Toowoomba’s Ian McLauchlan on how he uses his PikUp around the horse stud at Biddeston, with the help of his two young grandchildren. There’s no doubt that utes across Australia are put under pressure on worksites, farms and off road. We also hear from a family whose XUV500 was the most cost-effective and luxurious model for their young family. After the initial range of PikUps released by Mahindra, we look at the enhanced features of the Next Generation PikUp range. Finally, for those in the process of scouring the market for a second hand car, we highlight what you need to keep in mind from finance to having your vehicle checked by the experts plus a few things to look out for in a market with plenty of pitfalls. The purchase of a second hand car is a huge asset for many families and individuals; and one that takes a lot of negotiating to find the right make, model and age to suit you.

The team at Hughes car sales couldn’t be prouder of workshop floorman Adam Bradford, who showed his mettle on a national stage by winning the Mahindra Global Tech Test Competition. Story, page 10.

Mahindra proves its worth

Mahindra started out as a steel trading company in Mumbai but is fast gaining a reputation for its tractor, SUV and ute ranges

15 YEARS after Mahindra Australia opened in Brisbane in 2005, Mahindra has made a name for itself with its strong utes and tractors. The company celebrated one million tractor sales worldwide in 2003, and has come a long way from its origins in 1945 as a steel trading company in Mumbai, India. In 2014, Mahindra celebrated more than 100,000 XUV500s sold globally. The XUV500 joins a range including the PikUp Dual Cab, Single Cab 4x2, and Single Cab 4x4 models available from the Indian manufacturer, with the PikUp first launched in Australia in 2007, designed to cope with the tough country and rural conditions. With thousands of Mahindra PikUps sold to Australian customers over the past 10 years, the PikUp built a trusted and solid reputation as a reliable, rugged and value for money ute for the Australian market. A decade later, when designing the next generation PikUp in 2017, Mahindra models clocked up 80,000 kilometres in a six month testing period for durability and design. Mahindra’s Next Generation PikUp features a refreshed outer body styling, new six speed transmission, increased turbo diesel power, and a more stylish new interior. The dual-cab features 2.5 tonne braked towing capacity, a

Eaton Diff Lock and fuel consumption at 8.8 litres for every 100km. The 2.2 litre 4 cylinder engine offers 103kW of power and 330Nm @ 1600-2800rpm of torque. Ask Toowoomba’s Ian McLauchlan why he loves his Mahindra PikUp, and he’ll tell you there’s no better. He used it to carry feed and cart wood on his Biddeston horse stud. Mr McLauchlan’s lifelong passion is now being passed on to his young granddaughters that help on the property. He said his Mahindra vehicle was itself a workhorse on the property. “I like the look of these to be quite honest, and the fuel consumption is outstanding. The amount of grunt it’s got for a small ute is unbelievable,” he said.

“When I bought this, everyone told me I was mad, that I’d be no good. “The same people now have changed their mind… I’ve got no problem in recommending them at all. “You can take it to the bush and take it to town…. I’m pleased to say it’s my ute.” Mr McLauchlan’s comments are shared in one of many videos on the Mahindra website to highlight the best features of the makes, from families looking for space and added safety features in the XUV500, to farmers pushing their PikUp to the limit. Kylie Madden and Michael Barr use their XUV500 to travel with their three young girls with the benefits of space and enough room to easily put the pram in the back and head off for long drives. “The kids love having their space, the big seats and the big windows… and I love the reversing cameras, nav-man and just comfort, luxury,” she said. Mr Barr said when they looked at other vehicles at a similar price to the XUV500 they didn’t include all the features they wanted, so they choose the Mahindra.

Nearby Mahindra dealers ■ Toowoomba: Huges Car Sales, 658 Ruthven Street ■ Warwick: Cassels Auto, 20 Alexandra Drive ■ Goondiwindi: Tait Auto Group, 31 Albert Street Mahindra has established itself in the Toowoomba and Western Downs region, through Hughes Car Sales. In 2017 Mahindra helped mental health support service Karakan with the business now powered by a new dual-cab Mahindra Genio. Mahindra representatives said the Genio was “perfectly suited to community use, given its size of the cabin, the reliability, the fuel consumption and the size of the tray”. You can test drive a Mahindra model at sites across Queensland and Australia, including locally at Hughes Car Sales at 658 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba, at Mahindra dealers nearby at Cassels Auto, 20 Alexandra Drive, Warwick and through Tait Auto Group, 31 Albert Street, Goondiwindi. BUYER BEWARE: You can come across some amazing second hand cars around the traps, but watch out for lemons and legal trouble.

PHOTO: ROSTISLAV_SEDLACEK

Avoiding the used car blues

Buying used is one way to get an amazing car on a budget, but there are plenty of pitfalls. Here’s our top tips for buying used. Most drivers will start their journey moving through the awkward and unknown L-plate stage and then on to the excitement of which car to buy once the driver’s licence test is over. Others may be looking to upgrade their beater, these tips are also for you: with a bit of planning and knowing what to look out for, buying a second hand car can be a great way to get a model you couldn’t afford new. This best thing you can do throughout this process though, is to take your time and don’t get pushed into a car you aren’t 100 per cent sure on. There are some protections and warranties in place when buying from a dealer, but when you’re looking at For Sale signs in car windows by the roadside or on Gumtree, you’re virtually on your own. No matter which route you choose, the first thing you need to know is what you’re looking for, as the range of second-hand cars is endless. Are you after a safety features for a family car? A tough ute for a worksite? Or a fuel-efficient car to zip around town in, that could have a few dints and a bit of surface damage? Once you’ve spent the time on the front-end deciding your limits on the age of the car and its mileage, then you can narrow your search.

‘‘

Many cars are bought on finance, and there’s no guarantee the car isn’t being held as collateral against the loan, meaning it could be seized if the original owner defaults on the payments. Have any damage checked by a professional; this is not just to check there isn’t anything wrong with the general wear and tear of the car’s engine, breaks, or security features, it’s to ensure that there hasn’t been a cover up. Believe it or not, people do try to pass off their zero-value car to the next person with some patch fixes and a few coats of paint. A trusted mechanic can look for this damage, and advise you if it’s a lemon. What makes it zero value? If the car has been written off. Whether the car can be legally repaired and reregistered after it’s written off varies in each state, but sellers are not required to tell you if the car is on the written off vehicle register. Check the debt; many cars are bought on finance, and there’s Page 6

There are some protections and warranties in place at car dealerships as opposed to buying from Gumtree or the roadside, where you’re virtually on your own. PHOTO: WENDELLANDCAROLYN no guarantee the car isn’t being held as collateral against the loan, meaning it could be seized if the original owner defaults on the payments. Buyers can pay a small fee to check the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) and find out if the vehicle is encumbered on a loan. Check the numbers; when changing registration papers with the seller, there are three numbers you need to write down and check before you hand over any money: the Vehicle Identification Number (a 17-digit code on the metal plate inside the engine), the engine number (stamped on the engine), and the car’s registration plates. These need to match the registration details of the car. If something doesn’t match, you can report it to police. Check you can afford the car - this is where you need to shop around if you’ll need to finance your purchase. There are low rates and good terms available, but your current bank may not be the best offer. To ensure you know what you can borrow, look to secure loan

Questions to ask yourself ■ Is there any damage, repaired or otherwise? ■ Is it being held as collateral against a loan by the seller? ■ Does the VIN match the correct engine number and registration plates? ■ Can I afford it? pre-approval, but don’t forget the ongoing costs you’ll need to budget for, including insurance. This can also help in the negotiating period by knowing your purchase price upper limit; all that time spent researching average prices for like-vehicles with similar kilometres will come in handy. More information on buying from a private sale is available on the Queensland Government website, or from RACQ.

TOP JOB: Award-winning workshop floorman Adam Bradford is among the best in the business and loves helping customers at Hughes Car Sales.

PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

World-class effort wins out Hughes Car Sales prides itself on a job well done and the jobs are in the best of hands when it comes to Adam Bradford HUGHES Car Sales Dealer Principal Russell Hughes knows he has something that no other car dealership in Australia has – his workshop floorman Adam Bradford. With years of work under his belt, Adam came away the Australian winner for the Mahindra Global Tech Test Competition, proving his skill under the hood of the Mahindra range, sold at Hughes Car Sales in Toowoomba. Russell said in order to win, Adam undertook a series of Mahindra-designed online tests before the top four contenders spent a day in Brisbane, put through scenarios and problem solving games. “Adam had the highest result possible for the Mahindra competition, it’s huge,” he said. Adam will pack his bags for India for a week at the end of November to compete in the next stage, the International Mahindra Global Tech Test. “He will also get to tour the factory and see how the models are designed. For Russell, this means he can confidently tell his clients he has the best in the business, in Toowoomba. “We want to give people the confidence to know that if there is a problem, we’ve got a technician who knows how to find the answer,” he said. Adam has worked for Hughes Car Sales for three years, and spent time at Nissan and Armstrong Auto Group. “Adam is one of those mechanics who’s really hands on, he can fix anything and he takes his time, he’s not a hot head, and I’m yet to see him fail to diagnose a problem. “We’re very proud to have him on our team,” he said. Along with the talent in the workshop is the quality of the vehicles sold at Hughes Car Sales. Russell said that in the 30 years he has been selling cars, the Mahindra range was one of the most reliable. He said walk-in clients were able to talk to technicians like Adam and the team, about looking after their vehicle and how to extend its life without the hassle of outside services. Hughes Car Sales has been at their current premises for 21 years, with two of its team of nine staff members each celebrating 11 years with the company. “We’re all about customer service, and making sure the vehicles we sell meet our high standard, creating lifelong customers through our after-service care program.” Hughes Car Sales is running a competition where people can come in and test drive a Mahindra vehicle with no obligation, and go into the draw to win a range of prizes including a $2000 Flight Centre voucher.

LAID BACK: Motorhomes and caravans are increasing in popularity as people tire of long flights in cramped conditions taking them to overcrowded tourist destinations. PHOTO: TOURISM AND EVENTS QUEENSLAND

Beat the crowds and enjoy freedom There is so much flexibility to a road trip holiday and more people are regaining control of where they go and what they eat MOTORHOME travel continues to increase in popularity throughout Australia due to its flexibility, fun and affordability. Australian rental company Apollo Motorhome Holidays has seen an increase in frequency and duration of motorhome, campervan and four-wheel drive camper holidays during recent year. CEO Luke Trouchet said holiday bookings show no signs of slowing down. “You cannot beat a motorhome holiday, it should be on the bucket list for every Australian,” Mr Trouchet said. “Our custom-designed and built vehicles are so comfortable to travel and sleep in, most guests now average between 10 to 18 days of travel and many of them are repeat travellers. “All our recreational vehicles are designed by us to include everything the modern traveller needs for comfort on the road – including the kitchen sink.

“Our guests love the freedom to travel at their own pace and make their own itineraries.” Apollo’s top 10 reasons to take a motorhome holiday: 1. See the country in a different way – tiny seats and aeroplane food can’t compare to stretching out on the wide open road and stopping wherever and whenever you want. 2. Create the ultimate playlist – Apollo’s newest motorhomes offer Bluetooth and iPod connectivity – so you can sing as loudly as you want, all the way down the highway. 3. You only unpack once and there’s no luggage limits, so bring as many bags as you need. And the hairspray. And a normal-sized tube of toothpaste, large bottle of water, even a nail file – no one is going to confiscate them. 4. Throw away your watch. When you’re road tripping it’s all about the journey. Take your time. 5. Save your dollars. On a motorhome holiday your

accommodation and travel costs (and possibly some of your entertainment) are covered in one payment. 6. Eat like a local. Travelling through areas where local produce abounds? The kitchen makes it easy to enjoy the food of the area. You can even cook with gas. 7. Avoid the tourist traps. Being on the road gives you freedom to explore regional towns and cities and get off the beaten track. In Australia, true explorers can use a four-wheel drive camper to conquer epic rural routes. 8. Forget costly ticket changes – You have freedom to stop wherever and whenever you (or the little ones) want to, and then move on. 9. It’s a great way to visit friends and family without having to sleep in their lounge rooms. 10. The fun starts now. The minute you’re on the road your adventure has begun.

Get off beaten track for holiday

By ELAINE FOSTER FREE SPIRIT CARAVANS TOURING this iconic land is a desire many of us have. But if you are lucky enough to leave the tarmac behind and get off the beaten track in Australia you will be crossing a terrain built for cattle, not vehicles. Extra care needs to be taken to protect your vehicle as the outback tracks can cause damage. A majority of the unsealed roads will lead to tourist attractions and are well-driven, however some are corrugated and can be uncomfortable or dangerous. Good suspension on your four-wheel drive is a must and, of course, if your desire is to take a caravan it has to be extremely well-built, strong and durable, with a good chassis and suspension. Here are some tips for your journey: ■ Tell someone your plans Try to let someone know your itinerary or give them various check-in times so someone is aware of where you should be. ■ Take it slowly Going slowly means you see the amazing fauna and flora Australia has. If you come across emus, wallabies or kangaroos this will mean there are more so beware. ■ Check the terrain Invest in a small compressor for tyre inflation. If you are in deep sand you will be able to gain more control by deflating your tyres (start at 25psi and go lower if you need to), which will need to be inflated once back on the hard. Should you get stuck in sand or mud use a shovel to dig away from the wheels. If you do not have drive-outs collect material to put in the wheel ruts for grip. Use timber, palm leaves or grass. Put your jack on a plate to lift the car while you place your materials. ■ Visit local pubs It could be considered vital in the area of research to visit local pubs. Here you can gain knowledge of the area from the locals. At the least you will pick up some tips that may help you prepare and give you a deeper insight into the local area. ■ Always, always be prepared Weather can change suddenly, and a downpour kilometres away has the power to make a creek near you swell enough to stop you from driving across it. Page 16

BE PREPARED: Extra care needs to be taken when heading off the main roads into the outback as often when things go wrong you will have to fix it yourself. PHOTO: VINCE VALITUTTI/QLD TOURISM ■ Wet season The wet season is November to April and in northern Australia roads may be impassable. Note that if you ignore a road-closed sign you risk a fine of $5000 and could lose your licence. Mudflats can be dangerous, despite the fact they may appear harmless. Beneath the water the mud may be very deep so get out and walk across to check.

Other four-wheel drivers have said they waited and then were lucky enough to follow a truck driver, through low-lying water, who knew the area and the terrain. If you get bogged the last thing you want to do is spin your wheels. Hopefully you came prepared and have plenty of water, a good tow rope, a snatch strap, shackles and a few extra tools.

Taylor’s Parts Centre

Taylor’s remains a big part of Roma FOR more than 30 years Taylor’s Parts Centre has been a part of the Roma community. The company was founded by Peter and Wendy Taylor, even since selling to GPC Asia Pacific in 2016, the business remained part of the fabric of life in town. Store manager Daniel Harmon said it wasn’t just a case of selling parts, but also about being involved with local life, sponsoring and donating to local organisations. It was also about the team really knowing about the needs of a huge range of industries from agricultural, trade and industrial, to local government, oil and gas, and transport. Mr Harmon said there was plenty of experience getting around the business and every team member constantly developed their knowledge of the latest industry technology. “We have two salesmen, Michael and Warren, who have 20-plus years of experience each,” he said.

• COMMUNITY MINDED: Alicia and Brendan Humphreys with the Variety Bash car Taylor’s Parts Centre PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED sponsored this year. INSET: The team at Taylor’s are all about efficiency. “I’ve had about 15 years myself in the spare parts industry, so our team is not new to the game; we know what’s happening. “It’s just a matter of staying up-to-date with the ever-changing industries.” Far from making the business less relevant to locals when it sold, Mr Harmon said being owned by GPC Asia Pacific just made life easier. The GPC Asia Pacific company is Australia’s largest automotive parts supplier, this means Taylor’s Parts Centre have access to distribution centres in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne as well as some overnight services, moving parts through their huge supplier network.

This means people in a community built on transport, agriculture and mining could get what they need and get back to working as quickly as possible. Staff also have a “never say no” culture, with a team determined to find whatever part customers are after and do it quickly. On top of parts, Taylor’s also has a wide range of tools, equipment, oils, batteries and accessories, making it a one-stop shop for transport operators as well as farmers, mining companies and the local community. You can find Taylor’s Parts Centre at 49 Quintin Street (Warrego Highway), Roma.

FULL ON FUN: Chinchilla Weir is the perfect place to crack out the water skis and even has an island to circle around instead of just going up and down the river.

PHOTO: MATTHEW NEWTON

Water sports galore at weir

Whether you love high energy fun behind a boat, are keen for camping or want to drown a worm, Chinchilla Weir has it all CAMPING by the water is one of the great pleasures to be had in the Western Downs region. Nestled amid a picturesque segment of the Charley’s Creek catchment, which runs into the Condamine River, is Chinchilla: where picnic facilities and walkways provide a relaxing waterside setting. Chinchilla Weir, about 9km south west of the town on Chinchilla/Tara Road, provides the town’s water supply and is a fantastic site for all your recreational water sports. Skiers, boaties, canoeists, kayakers, even stand-up paddle board enthusiasts are lucky to have a freshwater location with an island to circle, making it different to other rural skiing areas that are simply a wide stretch of river. On warm weekends and holiday periods the weir becomes a playground for the young and young at heart, with all the water sports and family activities of locals and travellers. The weir also has a public ramp, grassy banks, barbecue area with sheltered seating and now has a new pontoon, worth about $240,000 and features a concrete deck and restraining piles. Built by Pacific Pontoon and Pier, the new addition provides easier access for disembarking passengers from boats, tie down points for temporary mooring and a safe environment to fish from, together with accessibility for the disabled.

‘‘

On warm weekends and holiday periods the weir becomes a playground for the young and young at heart, with all the water sports and family activities of locals and travellers... There are a limited number of sites right on the banks of the Chinchilla Weir and camping at the weir is free. The grounds are suitable for all vehicles – caravans, camper trailers and tents. You can stay a maximum of 48 hours and there is no booking required. The weir provides some free powered sites and is also pet friendly, with fires permitted in built fire places. And if there’s not quite enough for you to do down at the weir, there are a number of other stunning sites a stone’s throw away, so you could easily spend a few days or a week exploring the region. Off to the south west is Condamine’s Caliguel Lagoon, where you can also camp for free and barbecues, picnic facilities and amenities will ensure you are comfortable and catered for. It’s a lovely stretch of water and campsites are right by the water on flat ground. Page 22

There is plenty of high octane fun to be had, or you can sit on the banks and throw in a line. Along with waterskiing, boating, swimming and fishing, the site is also popular for bird watching and is absolutely perfect for kayaking. You can get there by heading down Condamine-Meandarra Road, approximately 3km south of Condamine off the Leichardt highway. Head west of Chinchilla to find Gil Weir in Miles. This weir is part of Dogwood Creek and the primary water source for the town of Miles. It’s a lovely spot for a beautiful picnic among the trees and is popular among fishermen. A short drive to the south east of Chinchilla is Warra, where you can find a weir that’s a bit more off the beaten track than the others. Warra Weir is accessible only in dry weather and doesn’t have any facilities, so you need to bring your own water with you and take your rubbish when you leave. But by all accounts, the fishing is worth it, with plenty of golden perch, silver perch and Murray cod waiting to be caught. Finally, off to the north west of Chinchilla is Wandoan, where you can check out the amazing Waterloo Plain Environmental

Waterloo Plain is an 11 hectare wetlands park in Wandoan teeming with birdlife and surrounded by native and locally occurring vegetation. The park comprises a man-made lake with a central island which has become a safe haven for many species of birdlife. Waterlilies grow profusely on the tranquil lake, and walkways and bridges allow you access to most of the environmental park. Ample parking space is available for caravans and RVs, which are most welcome to stop-over for the night.

Perfect mix for family business

Col Wilkie Body Works has balance right after 83 years in the game

IF YOU’VE been in business for 83 years, you know you must be getting something right. When Steve Wilkie bought his smash repairs business from dad Col Wilkie in 2008, he was continuing a long family tradition started by his grandfather, Ben, in 1935. Col Wilkie Body Works in Toowoomba is a true family operation, with Steve’s sister Kerri Crisp and his wife Hannah, also working there among the 16-strong team that prided itself on quality, fast, guaranteed work. And it was that attention to detail with a real customer-focused approach that Mrs Crisp said would continue to keep the business going strong for years to come. “We do anything from small vehicles, 4WDs to light commercial,” she said. “It should be a given that a panel shop can fix your car, but we like to look after the person too. We try to make it as easy as we possibly can and offer a lifetime guarantee on all of our work so people have peace of mind. “We’ve been here for a long time and we wouldn’t have been if we weren’t doing the right thing.” She said the company supported customers through the insurance claims process, helping them to lodge and organise repair times. They work with all insurers on the market, just remember that it is your policy, and your choice of repairer. Customers come from far and wide for their service, with many happy to send in cars from right across western Queensland and company estimator Bert Webster did regular quoting trips throughout southwest Queensland. Owner Steve Wilkie said he was committed to staff training and had all the latest technology available. These days there was so much more to the business than ironing out dings caused by car accidents and rogue roos, with a full suite of services added to the line-up. One such service was upgrades such as the new Dominator ute tray lining that Mr Wilkie said was growing in popularity for ute owners keen to see their pride and joy last the distance. He said ute trays were often affected by rust and wear and

CUSTOMERS FIRST: A strong family business with a customer-focussed approach made Col Wilkie Body Works one of the most trusted names in the business. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED tear, so the perfect solution was Dominator, which resisted chipping, rust, UV exposure and solvent and chemical leaks as well as hiding minor surface imperfections. It could be colour coded to match your vehicle or whatever colour you chose. He said the team at Col Wilkie Body Works believed strongly in providing people with a great customer experience in a one-stop shop.

Best in the class for all glass needs Big city glass service became available to the Western Downs seven years ago YOU might be amazed at the kinds of things across the Western Downs that require specialised glass. When Western Downs Autoglass first arrived in the region, it was hard to find any glass replacement services for large or unusual machinery. Company director Mick Thompson said it was the main reason he brought his 25 years of experience to the area. For the past seven years, he has worked on a huge range of projects, from your basic car windscreens through to trucks, heavy machinery, earthmoving equipment and excavators. Even hot rods and classic cars were catered to without having to head to the city. “We started the business out there seven years ago because there was a need for it,” Mr Thompson said. “There was no one that could provide the service we do. They could put a windscreen in your car, but couldn’t do trucks or earthmoving machinery.” He said the company could pretty much put glass in anything that moved, so the workshop was always busy. A major asset to both the business and its clients was having plenty of stock on hand, meaning people could get straight back on the road, farm or work site as quickly as possible. Flat glass for heavy machinery was kept on-site and cut to order. He said most jobs took no more than a day or two and they had glass on hand for most of them. Quality service and geographical reach were two of the things he believed really set the business apart from competitors. “The area that we cover includes Dalby, Chinchilla and Roma. Page 26

ON THE ROAD: Western Downs Autoglass has two workshops as well as a mobile service. We do all the way from Toowoomba through to Mitchell, Injune and even further,” Mr Thompson said. The company has workshops in Dalby and Chinchilla, in addition to a mobile service. The team also carried out chip repairs and window tinting, a service soon to be in high demand once the mercury started to rise for summer. Mr Thompson said the company prided itself on quality, both in workmanship as well as products. Western Downs Autoglass employees were trained to the highest industry standard and prepared to back the claim with a lifetime workmanship guarantee. Working on the basis that shoddy product and shoddy workmanship could pose a serious safety risk when it came to cars and trucks, the company uses only the highest quality glass as well as adhesives in line with manufacturing standards. To find out more about Western Downs Autoglass, visit www.westerndownsautoglass.com.au or phone 4668 9914 (Chinchilla) or 4662 4938 (Dalby).

Fatigue laws put livestock at risk AUSTRALIA’S fatigue management laws are “straight out ridiculous” says Katter’s Australian Party Queensland State Leader Robbie Katter. That’s why he’s pushing for temporary amendments to Queensland’s driver fatigue management laws as current limitations on livestock transporters driving hours often exposed stock to needless harm and suffering. He said he asked the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey and the Minister for Agriculture Mark Furner to raise the issue with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator as currently truck drivers were required to pull over at least every five-and-a-half hours, while weak stock suffered and in some cases perished, in the hot sun. “We’d love to see a massive overhaul of the fatigue management laws. I think they cause a lot of unnecessary angst and harm productivity and take away the autonomy that drivers need to manage themselves properly,” he said. “There’s the old adage you can’t legislate for idiots and there’s a small amount that may do the wrong thing but by and large most people do a good job of managing their fatigue and don’t need the government making rigid laws that do more harm than good.” He said livestock drivers and hauliers were under pressure thanks to the current Queensland drought conditions. “They’ve got stressed animals on board and they’re trying to get from A to B and when you’ve got a big head wind and a slow road, you run out of hours pretty fast.

‘‘

The fatigue management laws are something straight out ridiculous.

Robbie Katter

“It’s pretty impractical two hours short of Mt Isa or Cloncurry for instance and you’ve got stressed animals, it would seem silly that there wouldn’t be some latitude by the government under these conditions to make life a little bit easier for these drivers. “All we’re asking for is to give a bit of autonomy back to the drivers so they can manage this in very difficult circumstances. “It’s a cost free way and a really practical way the government can help.” While Mr Katter was currently only pushing for amendments for livestock drivers, he said he’d be “very keen” to push for a Page 32

MORE LATITUDE: Katter’s Australian Party Queensland State Leader Robbie Katter is calling on the government to show sense when it comes to fatigue management laws for livestock carriers. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED complete overhaul for the fatigue management laws for all heavy vehicle operators in regional areas. “The fatigue management laws are something straight out ridiculous. “They give a false sense of security to people because (it) forces in some cases drivers to sleep when they’re not tired and drive when they are tired to make it from A to B just because these laws were drawn up by some blooming bureaucrat in the city. “We’re battling these laws all the time but for now we just want amendments and some latitude applied during the drought conditions. “It’s time consuming and cumbersome, some of those permits you can get under schemes, a lot of people don’t use that stuff because you’re busy enough with the business as it is trying to make ends meet.”

MAKING MILES: There is a wide spectrum of take-home pay packets for truck drivers across the country, with “mile makers” able to earn upwards of $100,000 a year.

PHOTO: KIRSTIN PAYNE

Is there money in trucking? Truck drivers can make good money, but it’s not as simple as clocking in for a 40 hour week and there are lots of factors By BRUCE HONEYWILL THERE is no doubt in my mind that there is a good income to be had as a truck driver. I have watched many mates and acquaintances build their lives over the bonnet of a truck, raise a family, pay the house off by the time they are 50, give the kids a good education, have two late-model cars parked in the family garage and so forth. For a fair chunk of my life, when rearing my kids, I did it at the wheel of a truck. Yes, no doubt in my mind that a good living can be earned at driving a truck. BUT, and it is a big ‘but’, the very nature of our largely de-regulated employment system in the road transport industry means there is a tail at the bottom end of the spectrum of take home pay for truck drivers. There are drivers bringing home an average pay packet – spread over time – of not a whole lot more than what their teenage kids bring home from Macca’s. These drivers and their families are doing it hard. Some of these drivers could be casual working through labour hire companies. The labour hire companies use the truck drivers to take up the slack in bigger truck companies and the casual work can be sporadic and irregular leading to low average income. And like all industries there is a minority of employers with little regard for their drivers and pay them minimum wages, flout industrial law. There is a broad spectrum of returns from a career as a truck driver, from ‘doing nicely thank you’ to those for whom making mortgage or rent payments is a continual battle. With such a wide spectrum, it is difficult to create profiles of drivers who benefit – or do not – in a career as a truck driver, but that won’t stop us from trying. The high-income driver In my experience, doing well in a truck driving career boils down to one thing, being prepared to work big hours (or kilometres), a reasonable EBA and a stable support system. This driver may live in a large provincial city or town, be driving long-haul, be prepared to be away from home for several days and nights at a time. The pillars of long-term truck driving career success seem to be working for a reasonable boss, a reasonable EBA and a good support system at home. The employer, whether a boss or a company, will show respect for you as a driver as you have for him or her – even though, as in all jobs, you may well feel cranky with the bosses from time to time. The EBA will be nowhere near gold-plated or benevolent, but will offer the basics including an acceptable pay rate, Super, sick and holiday leave. As part of the EBA, there will be a reasonable per-kilometre Page 38

rate. In spite of the criticism it attracts, long-haul drivers do well on trip money if they are ‘mile makers’. The successful long-term high earners I have observed often have a home environment that is supportive with a partner and family who accept the long hours of the driver (male or female) and has an understanding of fatigue pressure. Expected income for this driver at the wheel of a long-haul multiple combination truck can be around the $100,000pa mark. To achieve this type of income, the driver will be averaging the equivalent of at least four ‘shifts’ a week under Basic Fatigue Management (BFM). That’s big miles, upwards of 4500km per week. To maintain this income you need an employer with good gear and support at home, but it is not unusual. 2018 Truck Driver status But many drivers fall short of the $100k per year mark of course. There are government websites analysing income of truck drivers from advertisements and the recommended rates of pay from the Fair Work Ombudsman. In 2019, truck driving is seen as a growth industry, expected to expand significantly over the next five years. In 2017 there were 184,200 truck drivers employed in Australia, a figure projected to grow to 200,400 by 2022. According to the Federal Government, full-time truck drivers’ average earnings are marginally above the national weekly average of $1586 for all occupations (2018). According to the government analysis, 91 per cent of truck drivers are in full-time work, much higher than the all-jobs average of 68 percent. Full-time truck drivers average around 48 hours of work per week compared to 40 hours for the all-jobs average. The average age of truck drivers is now 47 years old compared to the national worker average age of 40 years. And in spite of valiant efforts in recent years to increase the number of women entering the industry, it is still male dominated with only 3.6 per cent of workers being female. In an analysis of truck driver advertisements, a full-time B-double driver (MC) based in NSW could expect to gross between $80,000 and $119,000 per year. A Heavy Rigid (HR) driver based in Canberra could expect to gross between $70,000 and $90,000pa. A driver spending his or her time in a Medium Rigid (MR) based in Sydney will receive pay between $40,000 and $60,000 per year. The Fair Work Ombudsman has published the 2018 Pay Guide for long distance operations. For a full-time driver at the bottom end of the eight grades (entry level) will pull around $800 per week while a Multiple Combination (MC), Grade 7 or 8, will attract about $100 per week more.

Truck driving is seen as a growth industry, currently employing about 184,000 people. PHOTO: KIRSTIN PAYNE An MC driver working on the Pay Guide recommendations will be paid around 46 cents per kilometre which translates to around $2000 gross per week over four BFM shifts. These rates also attract benefits which a casual driver will not get. However a casual driver may receive 53 cents a kilometre to cover the absence of those benefits, but there is no guarantee of hours. Truck driving has the ability to attract incomes that make it a viable career and the demand for drivers is growing. This demand is unlikely to dwindle anytime soon as ageing drivers step down from the cab. There is a career path from light trucks, through the grades to the long distance multiple combinations where substantial income be derived, although this way of life will not appeal to all drivers. So yes, there is a quid in truck driving but it is not a gold mine on the per-hour basis, and it’s hard work. There is good money for those willing to put in the kilometres. Editor’s note: The discussion here comes from the writer’s own payslips, industry analysis and recommended pay rates.
