Respecteverybody, makethemhappy, beahardworkerandhelpall The month of February always reminds me the “Valentine” and “Vardanants” days and mostly my parents. Unfortunately, on the 29th of December I had the great loss of my life; my dad, Vahan Hovsepian, passed away. He was an amazing person with a perfect loving life partner, my mom. I’m so blessed that I had that great dad and I have a respectful mom, I’m so thankful to God for this unique gift to me, my parents. If my dad was alive at least he would love to say you, my readers, these 4 words: respect everybody, make them happy, be a hard worker and help everybody. With my mom he made a happy- healthy family in which there was only love, care, responsibility and generosity. When I asked my dad which day of his life was the best even on the last days, he said “my all days”, and when I insisted him, “ok which period was the best”, he answered, “when I met your mom”. It is the reality. I’ve not seen parents with that much love for each other. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of 2012. They are role models as a romantic couple for lots of people who have met them and even recently lots of couples wondered really if they can be like my parents! For them every day was a Valentine day. And they were trying to give their kind energy to their children and people around. But surprisingly the opposite of my parents also exists who have tried to destroy their child marriage life, which the best way is to respect us and just stay far from this unfortunate families. During these 50 years my parents have traveled almost 15% of the world (base on the statistics of travel apps), and Armenia was one of my dad’s favorite places. My parents always in their trips were finding good friends and connections and even a big group of that sort had participated in his funeral ceremony on the 5th of January, and some of them who had heard about this news still are calling from different countries. Even in this travelling period he could leave nice memory for them. He loved parties and always in our house were big parties, almost 10 wedding & engagement ceremonies were celebrated in our place. The party of his name’s day, “Vardanants Day” was a tradition and his party was very unique. Every year he was accepting min 100 guests in his place on “Vardanants Day” without previous invitation and my mom very proudly was planning for that day. He is so blessed because the 40th day of his death is exactly February 7, the “Vardanants Day”. If I want to talk about my dad it will pass more than million pages, just my dear readers I wish you a safe and happy travel and may every day in 2013 be full of the ability for you to make a smile on the faces of people you meet.

Enjoy your trip in Armenia Sincerely,

Anita Hovsepian

Saint Vardanants Day

The Commemoration of the Heroes The Armenian Church marks the holiday of St. Vardanants on Thursday preceding Fat Tuesday (Bun Barekendan) which is celebrated on the eve of the Great Lent. The Holy Vardanants festival is celebrated in memory of Armenian Commander Vardan Mamikonyan and his comrades-in-arms who martyred in the Battle of Avarayr against the Persian state in 451. This holiday is also considered to be the christening day anniversary for all people bearing the names of Vardan Mamikonyan and 7 other warriors and soldiers who fought heroically and died for the sake of their faith and country. This year the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the holiday of St. Vardanants on February 7. On the Commemoration Day of victims a divine liturgy is served in all churches of all dioceses which is followed by religious procession with cross and banners. The participants of the procession illustrate the war scenes and imitate the warriors and soldiers who put their lives into risk for the sake of Armenia and our faith against the Persians. Among the participants there is a rider on the white horse who embodies Armenian Military Commander Vardan Mamikonyan. This Divine Liturgy is a tradition marking the eve of the great battle against Persia, when the Armenian clergy blessed and baptized their troops. This holiday is one of our national favorite festive days as it symbolizes the insuperable and imperishable power of our faith. And now we celebrate the Commemoration Day of Victims of the Great Battle in memory of those brave soldiers who spared no efforts to save the unity of our country. The martyrdom of St. Vardanants warriors is the victory against collapse.

Great Barekendan

Festive Masquerade

Barekendan is an old Armenian traditional festival that we are seeking to revive as a form of civil action by calling upon the citizens to “wake up” and become involved in social processions in Armenia. Word Barekendan derives from the two roots – “bari” which means “good” and “kendan” or “kendani” which means “alive” or “living”. This year festival of Barekendan is celebrated on February 10. As all holidays Barekendan also has its sacrament. Besides the festive celebrations and feasts it has spiritual counsel. As the Great Lent begins the day after Barekendan, it is the final call for people to be uninhabited in their actions prior to the start of fasting. On the eve of Barekendan after the evening ministry in church the altar stage is covered with curtain, which symbolizes the exile of Adam from Eden and till the Easter the Gospel is not taken out from the alter symbolizing the hidden treasures of church. In particular, this holiday is an occasion in which traditional norms and routines are rejected and reversed. People wear masks, costumes and participate in games, performances and jokes as a way of expressing their opinions. The holiday is transformed to a masquerade spreading fairy happy mood over people. In this regard the holiday is often compared with other festive days but the most consonant one is “Fat Tuesday” or “Pancake Day” which is celebrated in several countries. It coincides with the eve of the Great Lent and presents a day of joy and revelry, games and competitions. Thus, Barekendan symbolizes the virtues of human spirit and the lent symbolizes the evil. In other words, Barekendan is the release from the hardships of the lent which means passing from sadness to joy and from the torture to peace.

Celebration of Terndez

Candlemas Day

On February 14, 40 days after Christmas, Armenian Apostolic Church and all Armenians celebrate “Tearnyndaraj” (Candlemas Day) or as people like to call it – Terndez. According to the Gospel 40 days after the birth of Christ Mary and Joseph took the baby to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord and to consecrate to the temple. They met an old man named Simon who had asked God to give him a long life so that he could see the son of God. Hence, the holiday was created and named “Tearnyndaraj”, which means “to come to meet the Lord”. The name “Terndez” is accepted among people. It means “the Lord is with you”. The newlyweds are especially looking forward to the holiday as Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II announced the holiday of “Tearnyndaraj” as the day of the newlyweds blessing. The celebrations begin in the evening of the 13th of February as according to church calendar new day begins after the evening divine ser-vice when the fields and gardens are blessed. Then a festive bonfire is made in the churchyard. The right of making fire belongs only to the newly married couples who got married that year. After that the couples jump over the fire. The presents light their candles by the candle burning in the church, return home and make bonfires with that light in their yard as during consecrating Christ to the temple people came to meet him with lamps. After the liturgy in the morning of the 14th of February the ceremony of the blessing of the newly married couples takes place in all churches to reinforce their love and loyalty alliance. According to the tradition of the holiday of “Terndez” it is accepted to visit the newlyweds taking presents for them.

Master Levon's Underground Sanctuary

Present Day Ark

The underground museum-shrine is situated in one of the suburbs of Yerevan which will not leave any visitor indifferent. You must by all means visit village Arinj in the surroundings of Yerevan to see Master Levon’s underground sanctuary. In Arinj everyone knows Levon Ararkelyan and you can easily find his house from the gate of which starts the tour to the miraculous subterranean cave. The entrance of the house made of colorful stones resembles the gates of a castle inside of which you are to have a unique experience. The first things you will see in the yard are the two figures painted on the wall of the house. Master Levon portrayed himself on the wall with a hummer and a chisel in hands and his wife with a potato in hand. Then a big iron door leads to the cave full of miracles. Entering the cave you start going downstairs by staircases made of soft clay. Soon you appear in the underground world of 21 meters depth. After descending all 80 stairs you find yourself in a round hall, in a pavilion decorated with candles. It is the oratory. Each person should enter here alone and making a wish they should lit a candle. As the master used to say a candle lit here by all means serves to its purpose and the wishes come true.

12

It took more than two decades to Master Levon to build this cave–shrine. He has been working hard for 20 long and intense years chiseling subterranean halls, rooms and passages. This cave is often compared with the Noah’s Ark and considered to be the second ark which is to save people not from flood but from fire. All these tremendous works were begun on a very usual day when Levon's wife asked him to build a cellar to keep potatoes there. And so Levon began to dig near one of the rooms in order to build a small storage. While digging under the room his spade touched a huge piece of stone and the master began chiseling it. He could not stop digging after that because every night he saw a dream in which a voice was continually telling him to dig and to dig... And here is how this story ends. You see to what led the simple desire to have a small cellar. It seems incredible that this huge subterranean structure is the work of a single man's hand. He has erected this miraculous cave alone using the simplest tools: the hummer and a chisel. It is interesting that he always used to ask his guests to bring him new tools as the old ones were worn out. This is how the Master Levon's underground sanctuary was created, the doors of which are always open to welcome guests and visitors.

Magil Cave

A Stone Age Grotto in Armenia A cave is a natural underground space formed by natural weathering of rock (the breaking down of rocks through contact with water). The world’s largest and most abundant caves are located in limestone. In Armenia there are several large caverns located mainly in the region of Vayots Dzor which is rich in caves and is distinguished for its deep gorges, luxuriant valleys and almost impassable ravines. One of the largest caves is Magil, located in the Noravank gorge, close to Areni. It is 1.7 km deep and is full of many narrow passages and tunnels. The beautiful look of the cave is provided by the existence of stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites “jumping up” on the ground. These natural monuments are streaming forms shaped as a result of the exhalation of dripping water from cavern arches: thin sediment of dripping water forms stalactites and water drops fallen on the ground form stalagmites. Magil is a cave of Neolithic period. Stone Age bones, stone tools and artifacts have been discovered in the cave, as well as more recent ceramic fragments from the 9th century. The cave was

22

inhabited as far back as Neolithic period. In Stone Age the caves were difficult to access and the entrance was so narrow that one person could hardly enter the cave. People believed that the more impassable and inaccessible the cave was, the more protected they were. The passageway to Magil cave varies from just enough for a person to crawl through. Because of its depth, Magil cave holds a constant temperature of 14 degrees centigrade. Magil has a unique underground eco-system, home to thousands of bats. The only mammal capable of true flight, bats are an important part of Armenia’s ecology, a keystone species that is vital to the stability of the eco-system and crop production in the country. Magil cave houses 8 bat species, the 6 of which are registered in the Red Book of Armenia. Magil is one of the largest caves of Armenia and is very dangerous lest you are accompanied by a skillful guide who can show you the beauty of Neolithic cave leading you by the most interesting passages.
