Holy Easter

Feast of the Glorious Resurrection of Jesus Christ

The Feast of the Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ or the Easter Feast is one of the five major feasts of the Armenian Church, which is gorgeously and uniquely celebrated in Armenia by the Armenian Apostolic Church. Being the first official Christian nation in the world, the Easter is celebrated by Armenians in a special way. Following the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ His body was taken off the cross and placed into the tomb and the entrance to the tomb was closed by a large stone and the soldiers were ordered to control the entrance to the tomb. After three days the three women, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the Mother of James and Joseph, and the wife of Zebedee brought spices and perfumes to anoint the body of Jesus. They found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the tomb, so they went in but they didn’t the body of the Lord. They stood there puzzled about this, when suddenly two angels dressed in white appeared and said to them; “Why are you looking among the dead for 8

one who is alive? He is not here, ha has been raised.” On the day of the Easter feast people dye eggs red as a symbol of fruitful life, salvation and joy. Besides, the egg is the symbol of the world, the shell of which is the sky, the membrane is the air, the white is the water and the yolk is the earth. Dyeing eggs red symbolizes the salvation of the world by means of Blood of Christ. The Armenian Church celebrates the Easter Feast on April 20. The Armenian Church traditionally celebrates evening Divine Liturgy on the evening prior to Jesus Christ’s Glorious Resurrection (Easter). On Sunday, the day of the feast, a morning service is conducted the Andastan Service is performed wherein the four corners of the world are blessed, afterwards the Divine Liturgy is celebrated. That day the faithful welcome each other on the occasion of the Glorious Resurrection of Christ conveying the great tiding: “Christ is Risen from the dead” and receive the answer: “Blessed is the Resurrection of Christ.”

99rd Anniversary of Aremenian Genocide The Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, cost the lives of about 2 million Armenians. Throughout their history Armenians have experienced heroism, struggle and tragedy but have always managed to survive. The beginning of the 20th century was the most tragic and perhaps cruelest page in the history of the Armenian people. In 1915 the great bulk of the Armenian population was forcibly removed from Armenia or killed. Administrated by the Turkish government against the defenseless and law-abiding Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire, Armenians were subjected to deportation, expropriation, abduction, starvation and torture. Over 200 Armenian poets, intellectuals, religious and community leaders were imprisoned in the interior of Anatolia, where most were summarily executed. They died as a result of the harsh conditions of the desert but it was not from deportation, rather from an attempted escape from onslaught of the Turkish murderers. In memory

10

Welcome To Armenia

of the victims of the Armenian genocide a memorial complex was built in 1965 in Yerevan. Tsitsernakaberd (memorial) rises on a forested hill as an eternal witness of the atrocities committed against a whole population. The twelve towering stones bent toward an eternal fire in the middle harmonize with the adjacent obelisk as a stone elegy to the victims of the genocide. Every year, on April 24 Armenians from Armenia and from all over the world visit the Genocide Memorial Tsitsernakaberd to pay homage to the victims of the massacre. Every year a lot of tourists visit Armenia, and it is a great respect to us when they express their wish to go to Tsitsernakaberd to pay homage to the Armenian victims of Genocide. For sure, Genocide was a systematic attempt at ethnic cleansing and mass murder. The Turkish government has brilliantly denied the occurrence of the Armenian Genocide and insists that such a mass murder never took place, and refuses to admit the guilt and accept the responsibility.

Tigran Hamasyan

Music Sounds Right From "A Fable"

This year spring started with an incredibly beautiful solo concert, performed by young composer and pianist known especially for his improvisational skills Tigran Hamasyan. The concert hall was full. People of different age groups and with different social and cultural backgrounds enjoyed one and the same concert. One thing united then people: evaluation of Tigran's music. Tigran is an outstanding representative of the art of musical improvisation. The characteristic feature setting him apart from other musicians of the sphere is the deep influence of Armenian folk tradition in his works. "I guess it will take me a whole lifetime to fully understand Armenian folk music", he says. Having performed in different angles of the world he mentions that Armenian folk music is accepted as exotics abroad, especially by Europeans. He is a lover of folk music in general and finds a close interconnection between them. Tigran likes the process of expanding and developing melodies. "Sometimes I hear a set of chords or harmonies in my head, and I feel I can present themin a special way, or just create new musical textures", he says. "The most important thing for me is to explore the deep entity of the melody and understandin which "boxes" they should be served". From early childhood Tigran grew up listening to his father's favorite classic rock music: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc. While his uncle "made him" listen to funk and jazz. So, his childhood passed in a place where music was everywhere. There were certain periods in his life during which he was influenced by different types of music. "There was a time when I was "stuck on" bebop jazz. I wouldn't accept any other music style but bebop jazz style", he laughs. Lately he has added some rhythmic sounds to his works. "I wouldn't call it beat boxing, those sounds are just a range of rhythms, which I'm still working upon",

14

Welcome To Armenia

he mentions. From his early ages Tigran was keen on singing while playing. "I'd try to sing without fully perceiving the rhythms. I even had some performances as a jazz singer", he recalls. Hamasyan has been interested in Armenian poetry since he was 13. This was the time when he explored the greatness of Hovhannes Tumanyan as a presenter of Armenian folk culture. Armenian poetry has now become an important part of his music. His last album "Shadow Theater" was collaboration with his quartet. "While choosing the members of my group I never pay attention whether they are famous or not. If someone is known worldwide it does not necessarily mean that we can work together. I always choose people with whom I can simply work". "Working in a group is a real pleasure for me, when the "colors" of different musical instruments merge and reach full harmony. In this case the ideas of improvisation pass from one musician to the other, while during solo performances all the ideas are mine, and I pass them to nobody else, but myself", he says. Group performances are especially attractive because of experiments. "We had several concerts in Paris, based on my album "A Fable", during which we presented the same melodies in 3 different performances: by rock trio, flute and piano, and by a chamber group. I like this kind of elaborations", Hamasyan recalls. Finding both types of performances interesting, he prefers to keep the balance between them while planning his concerts. Tigran mentions that many things may inspire him to create music: be it a book, a work of art, architecture, nature, people or simple relationships. "But in order to compose I need silence, space and my piano by my side", he says. Dub step, rock, electro music‌ which musical elements are going to give new color to Armenian folk music? Let's wait and see!
