THE BLESSING OF GRAPES IN ARMENIA

O

ne of the holy celebrations of the Armenian Church is the Blessing of Grapes which is conducted following the celebration of Divine Liturgy on the feast of Assumption of the Holy Mother of God. During the pre-Christian times “the feast of Roots and Fruit” constituted part and parcel of the religious rituals of almost all nations. On this day a special ceremony was conducted by the servants of the temple, during which the first fruit of the year was offered to the corresponding God embodying fertility as a sign of obedience, gratitude and fruitfulness for the coming year. Although the above-mentioned ceremony of offering the first fruit was also found in Armenian traditions, it was not distinguished as “the feast of Roots and Fruit”. It was considered to be one of the feasts devoted to the Goddess Anahit as she embodied fertility and fruitfulness. After Armenia’s adoption of Christianity as the state religion in 301 AD, St. Gregory the Illuminator implemented new directions in the Armenian Church concerning traditions. The first Armenian Patriarch changed the essentials of the services, but included parts of some customs and rites of the old Armenian religion into the new Christian Church traditions. One of them was the offering of the first fruit from the harvest. Upon the direction of St. Gregory the “offering” of the fruit was changed to be a Holy blessing of the harvest conducted by a priest. In the Armenian Church grapes are given preference over other fruits to be 10

blessed as the first fruit of the harvest. This is conditioned by a number of historical and religious circumstances. After the devastating flood, our ancestor Noah planted a vineyard in the valley on the slopes of Mt. Ararat and grew grapes. The fruit of the vineyard became the decoration of the Ararat valley; it was considered to be the noblest fruit and was called the KING OF THE FRUIT. Jesus Christ repeatedly assimilated himself with the vine. According to the explanation given by our Church Fathers the Holy Mother of God is the selected branch that presented humanity with a pure and life-giving vine - Jesus Christ. The blessing of the fruit conducted on the feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God coincides with the end of summer when the grape ripens. Today it is traditional for faithful Armenians who have grape vines or vineyards to offer the first fruit of their harvest during the blessing of the grapes so that the original meaning of the ceremony established by St. Gregory the Illuminator would be continued and the divine and heavenly blessing would abundantly inundate their fields. The canons of the Armenian Church do not prohibit eating grapes before the Blessing of the Grapes, and the tradition of abstaining from eating grapes before the ceremony is rooted in the people, and has become a national custom. As the grape was given preference for blessing over all other fruits, then waiting with obedience and abstinence until the blessing of the grapes follows in the tradition established by St. Gregory.

ARMENIAN APRICOT A TREASURE ON A SACRED LAND

A

pricot is an important and special fruit for Armenians. It is almost sacred; it is even revered. Historically, in the 3rd century BC, Akkadians called the apricot “armanu” (meaning Armenian), and Armenia “Armani”. One of the ancient peoples of Mesopotamia, Arameans, called the apricot tree “Khazura Armenia” (Tree of the Armenian apple). After fighting Armenian King Tigranes the Great in the 1st century BC, Roman general Lucullus took several apricot saplings from Armenia to Rome. The Romans planted those saplings in their city and called the fruit “Armenian plum” (Prunus Armeniaca). The plant spread all over Europe from Rome. As De Poerderlé stated in his writings in the 18th century: “Cet arbre tire son nom de l’Arménie, province d’Asie, d’où il est originaire et d’où il fut porté en Europe …” (“this tree takes its name from Armenia, province of Asia, where it is native, and whence it was brought to Europe …”). An archaeological excavation at Garni found apricot seeds in the Eneolithic era site. As a result of many scientific researches numerous evidences were found regarding the Armenian origin of arpricots. Today, in scientific literature, apricot’s Latin name remains “Prunus Armeniaca”. The same source notes that the apricot tree has been celebrated in Armenian literature since ancient times and that the Armenian word for apricot (tsiran) appears to be of Armenian origin and is found in the Armenian translation of the Bible. What interests us most of all is how universally apricots are found on the Armenian table. Virtually every variant of Armenian cuisine includes a litany of apricot recipes. We boil them into jellies, jams, marmalade and compotes, stew with lamb or chicken and steep them in pilafs and stuff in meats. The apricot has been the symbol of nationality and victory for Armenians for many centuries. In the middle ages, Armenian kings and knights would go to battle wearing apricot-colored ornaments called “tsirani.” One of the three colors of the Armenian flag is the apricot color. Every year in July, during the harvest of apricots an “apricot festival” is held. People from different villages and towns bring apricots picked up from their own gardens in straw baskets, including dried apricots, alcoholic beverages and many other foods made of the richest fruits. People cheer on their cleverness and treat others with their homemade treasures. This is a national trait-treating others and being happy when others are pleased by your food. For one whole day the Armenian land, its waters, and the fruits-the apricot, are being praised and celebrated. In Armenia, the apricot tree is also used for making various wood carvings, souvenirs and duduk (also know as apricot pipe) which is a popular musical instrument in Armenia having heart touching magical tunes as if it carries the whole history of one nation. 12

ARMAN KHARAZYAN-A POPULAR PR SPECIALIST TALKS OVER TOURISM EFFECTS IN ARMENIA

I

obviously share the opinion that the growth of tourism greatly effects on the development of country’s economy and the rise of its population’s living standards, because today tourism is one of the most important factors of global economy efficiency and dynamics. In other words, it is a field of business that both satisfies the demands of a tourist and provides the developing countries with the tangible income. This is the reason tourism has become a serious source of income for many countries and that is the great opportunity to enrich the state budget with significant revenue. If we carefully observe the analysis, it will be clear that the very tourism provides the greatest part of countries’ national income. This branch is considered to be a priority sector in industry for many countries including Armenia. It is nice to see that during the last decade there is a huge progress in tourism development in our country that is associated with many circumstances, however, our country needs serious researches that will increase the region’s potential and provide broad prospects in the development of tourism industry. Today Armenia greatly concedes with the level of its socio-economic development in comparance with many countries that are considered to be global center of tourism, the latter is a serious obstacle in our country for the fast development of the very branch. Need to be mentioned that tourism is not only an important branch of economy but also an important component of lifestyle, as it includes the relation of a human with the surrounding environment. Tourism is the unity of relationships, phenomena and connections related with the people’s movement and process of their stay in their preferred destination whereas the tourist is

18

a potential consumer of tours, product or other services, a temporary visitor of a certain country despite of his nationality, citizenship, race, religion and language, a person who is out of his homeland for minimum one night travelling for his pleasures or for business, health caring and country revealing and recognizing reasons. According to the results over the tourism expenses made during the last few years, the first place takes USA while recording 31 billion US dollars, the second is Germany- 25.2 billion US dollars, the third one is Great Britain with 21 billion USD expenses in tourism, later comes Russia- 7.1 billion US dollars. World Tourism Organization forecasts with great hopes that in the near future the number of tourists in Armenia will reach 1 billion, as for 2020 the number of tourists will increase up to 1 billion 600 million and the 21st century will become for us a tourism period.

INTERVIEW WITH GRIGOR MINASYAN MANAGING PARTNER AT AM.AM Dear Mr. Minasyan, How much are the rights of tourists are protected in Armenia? -In Armenia there is a law over Tourism and Tourism Activities passed in 2003. The very law accurately defines the rights of a tourist and the state was obliged to protect the latter according to the Legislation and the International Contracts. As for the cases related to a tourist’s right protection, I have to assure there hasn’t been any remarkable example in Armenia so far. That might be either connected with the small flows of tourists in our country or most probably with the fact that the rights of a tourist are well protected in Armenia. Can you remind such a case in your practice that has been related to the protection of a tourist’s rights and how often do you come to face them? -We have had one such case so far, and the issue was between a tourist and a leading Insurance company in the market. I have to mention that due to the professional and generous work of our team the parties came to an agreement escaping from the judicial troubles. However, AM Law Firm team follows a principle to reconcile the parties, in case we don’t succeed or our client has lost all the resources before turning to our services, we do our best to legally guarantee a victory for each client. How do you access the development of tourism in Armenia? Can such issues mentioned above become an obstacle in the development of tourism in our country? If yes, how can one prevent them to come up? -Comparing with the results of the previous years nowadays tourism in Armenia is in a better state. But one should consider that tourism is the field that continuously needs development. Of course, not proper protection of the rights of a tourist can become an obstacle in the development of tourism in the country, but obviously this issue can’t be the main problem. What means or what ways can you offer for the development of tourism in Armenia? -As I already mentioned for the development of tourism Armenia has to cross a long way. First of all, we should develop Armenia’s description as one of the best and most attractive destinations and the effective presentation of the country in the world market. The main problem that worries most of the tourists should be solved; that is improving the availability of the entrance to a certain country. I think there is no need to single out all the problems one by one in the framework of this interview, whereas I would like to mention that one should work hard, as only hardworking can lead to a success and tangible results. What do you think are the main problems or opportunities in our legal system? -The main problem of our legal system is the corruption. But if we compare nowadays situation with the one in the previous years there is a huge progress, of course I am not excluding the disadvantages. After some improvements the corruption risks were quite low, though we have lots of things to realize for succeeding the justice. What is the main feature of your company? The main feature of AM Law Firm is the principles adopted by our professional team. We have the courage and the ability to be stubborn to succeed. We assure that each client is legally protected beside the reliable team of AM Law Firm. 24
