SPRING HAS COME WITH ITS FRESHNESS AND BEAUTY...
pring gives us new hopes, new feelings and new ideas. With the first blossoms of the trees people change their attitude towards the life for the better; they have new goals and new dreams. As always, “TourInfo” magazine is ready to highlight the most important events of this spring month that one needs to know while being in Armenia. First, spring is the time when women feel themselves special, when they are honored for their beauty, nature, for their talents and achievements. On April 7, the day of Maternity and Beauty, women in all the cities of Armenia receive wonderful flowers and gifts, and the city booms with concerts and exhibitions. Yet, besides bringing its brightness and beauty, April also reminds all the Armenians around the world of the Armenian Genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire in 1915. On April 24 not only Armenians, but also tourists and foreign officers from different countries come to Tsitsernakaberd Memorial

I AM ARTSAKH, WE ARE ARTSAKH...
he beginning of April in Armenia started with the terrible news about the sudden attack of Azerbaijan on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. All the mass media in Armenia, as well as foreign news agencies were providing the latest news from the frontline. Though ceasefire has been announced for several days, the situation still remains dangerous and unstable. The roots of the conflict go back to early 1920s when according to the order of the Soviet Union leader Stalin Nagorno-Karabakh, populated by ethnic Armenians, was included in Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. When the USSR began to collapse, the question of Nagorno-Karabakh re-emerged. Since 1987 the inhabitants of Karabakh started rioting which escalated into a war that lasted till 1994. One essential fact should be mentioned here: on December 10, 1991 an independence referendum was held in Artsakh and was approved by 99.89% of voters. Karabakh claimed its sovereignty in the frames of the right of nations to self-determination that is a cardinal principle of International Law. It states that nations, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and fair equality of opportunity, have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no interference. To hinder the process Azerbaijan puts forward the principle of territorial integrity stating as if Armenia doesn’t respect it. Because of the seeming clash of these two principles the conflict remains unresolved up to this day. Yet, the principles do not contradict each other as are located on different levels. Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity has nothing to do with Karabakh’s right of self-determination. The principle of territorial integrity refers to the relations between independent states, while the right of self-determination between an independent state and a nation. Thus, on the one hand people legally claim their right of self-determination, while on the other hand Azerbaijan, ignoring this fact, claims its territorial integrity. In such conditions decisive is not the opinion of the state where the people do not want to live, but the opinion of the people, because the right is absolute and cannot be limited by other states. Though nowadays many states leaded by their own political interests overlook this right, it is an undeniable fact and will sooner or later be practiced. The trouble is that the prolongation of the conflict brings new clashes, new victims, deteriorates both the political and economic situation in the South Caucasus and endangers region’s stability. Azerbaijan, being an obvious aggressor itself, makes fake announcements trying to represent Armenia as the initiator of the military clashes. To put an end to this continuous aggression from Azerbaijan, international mediators should make a correct decision in terms of International Law and should respect the right of people wishing to live separately. This is the only way to achieve stability in the region. During the latest escalation of the conflict a flash mob “I am Artsakh, We are Artsakh” launched in order to raise the international support for Karabakh. We are all Artsakh and respecting Artsakh’s independence we respect all other nations of the world and their right to live independently in their own sovereign state. Nagorno-Karabakh must return to the negotiation process and must legally decide its own political status. 8

RECYCLING FLOWERS AT TSITSERNAKABERD MEMORIAL
EE
very year on April 24th, thousands of people pay tribute to the memory of the Genocide victims by bringing flowers to the Eternal Flame of the Genocide Memorial. A few days later these flowers faint and become garbage. However, since 2010, the flower gathering event has given them a second life. The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) in cooperation with the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute and “VivaCell-MTS” telecom operator carries out the recycling process of the gathered flowers at Tsitsernakaberd Memorial. The event takes place with the support of many volunteers, organizations and representatives of international organizations, schools and university students, who implement the FPWC-initiative and give a new life to those flowers which are deposed on April 24th. Within the frames of this activity, which is a part of the Earth Day campaign, all the flowers are carefully collected and transported to the back of the monument, their stems and petals are separated. The stalks of the flowers are chaffed to become compost for the development of the memorial gardens, and the flower petals are carefully collected, dried and then processed. Recycled paper is used to make cards and letters of acknowledgement which are sent to various institutions abroad to remind once again of the greatest crime of the 20th century - the Armenian Genocide. According to FPWC founder Ruben Khachatryan the campaign aims to remind people of the unfinished tragedy of the genocide. “Although we have initiated this, we strive to make the flower gathering an event that with us or without us becomes a beautiful tradition and has a continuous character. The campaign also pursues another aim: the process of flower recycling resembles a thread that continues the reflections and experiences of people who laid the flowers at the memorial complex,” says Khachatryan. According to VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian, “Besides being a means to pay tribute to the memory of the innocent victims, these flowers can serve to our common cause. Memorandums, certificates of gratitude, invitations printed on paper made from recycled flowers are unique in that they make every single flower visible. The flowers reassert the undeniable fact of the Armenian genocide perpetrated in the early 20th century and call everyone to remember about it, serving as an ambassador to foreigners visiting Armenia.” The process of flower gathering at Tsitsernakaberd is always well organized and the volunteers enjoy their teamwork. Anyone who is interested and wants to participate in flower gathering activity can contact with the organizers by these numbers 010 55 52 09 or 093 56 94 53.

RED BRIDGE
rriving in an ancient city like Yerevan it is interesting to find buildings that have old history and depict the life of the city’s former inhabitants. Across the Victory bridge, down on the river floor, not far from Yerevan fortress (now Ararat Wine factory) one can notice the ruins of an antique Yerevan bridge, called Red bridge. It was built in the Middle Ages over the river Hrazdan (formerly Zangu) and was rebuilt in 1679 after the earthquake. The double-span bridge was 80 meters long and 10 meters high. It had 4 arches, 2 centrals of them were big, through which the river flew, the other two that can partly be seen today were small and comparatively high for irrigation water channels. The bridge is called “red”, because it was built from the Armenian red stone “tuff”. Besides, it is called “Khoja-plav bridge” for Khoja-plav, a wealthy man from Kanaker who sponsored 1679 restoration of the bridge. In those old times Red bridge was the only link in Yerevan that connected the area around Yerevan fortress (founded by Urartian King Argishti I in 782 BC) with Ararat plain; with Etchmiadzin; part of an ancient silk road, with Aparan, Talin and with other remote residences. Moreover, before the construction of the Victory bridge in 1945, Red bridge was the unique city bridge over the river Hrazdan. Not far from the bridge were Dalma and Sardar gardens. Besides, fairs and exhibitions were usually held nearby the bridge area. Pack animals, carts, pedestrians and horsemen used to cross the bridge. Built for both economic and military purposes it was frequently repaired. Yet, the most fundamental
14
restoring was carried out in 1830. The last time it was reconstructed in 1851. In the 20th century the bridge ruined. Red bridge is considered to be the place where one can conceptualize the whole image of old Yerevan. Situated near the fortress of Yerevan where the history of the city starts, the bridge takes us from the present to the past and gives us the opportunity to imagine the liveliness of the city. As Red Bridge is not used nowadays, many Armenians do not even know its location. Persians sometimes come here, as there is a Persian mosque under the left part of it. In order not to lose this old part of the city, Yerevan Municipality together with the Ministry of Culture has designed the project of the bridge restore. Yet, even after restoration it will serve only for passenger cars, as it cannot hold heavy trucks. In spite of this fact, the project is of great importance, as it will revive one of the greatest places in the history of Yerevan, thus making the bridge outstanding and recognizable for civilians as well as for the foreigners.

“Paravon”, Yerevan, a concert was held with the participation of Andy and Leila. Many Iranians visiting Armenia had a chance to take part in the concert and to enjoy their holiday. Immediately after the announcement about the concert an interest in getting the tickets aroused. People from different countries were obtaining the tickets online and accordingly getting more interested in Armenia. “Such concerts are one more reason for the Iranian tourists to visit Armenia, as it is not a secret that concert events alike are forbidden in Iran”, noted Edgar Meliksetyan adding that Iranians generally arrange their pastime out of their country borders. Continuing the topic Edgar Meliksetyan referred to the accomplishments of this year. “This time we decided to organize larger-scale programs. Concerts were held for two days in “Sports and Concerts Complex”, as well as in “Paravon Complex”. We invited seven singers who are very popular among the Iranians and beyond. The practice shows that many foreigners familiar with the Iranian culture also got online tickets from the various corners of the world. By the way, the price of the concert tickets was more available this year.” Edgar Meliksetyan mentioned that “TourInfo” magazine besides its participation in the organizational activities, also prepared a special release in the Persian language. “This special journal publication in Persian was completely ready before Iranians’ New Year, with a quite large printing. I would like to mention that this is not our first experience. Journals in Persian were released during the previous years, too, and the expectations were justified. It is really a great chance as the number of the organizations interested in this initiative is rather big. In 2015 we organized only one concert assuming that people will come and enjoy the evening with their favorite singers. This year everything is different; together with many organizations we offered more interesting entertainment ideas on these days. For this reason we arranged Spring Shopping Festival with Yerevan Mall so that Iranian tourists not only take part in the concerts but also do pleasant shopping. By the way, right in Yerevan Mall Captain Kid’s Treasure Island offered Iranian children a pastime free of charge; moreover there were Persian-speaking nannies. Other organizations also joined us and new co-operations with them are expected”, concluded the executive head of “TourInfo” tourism magazine Edgar Meliksetyan.
THE EXECUTIVE HEAD OF “TOURINFO” MAGAZINE EDGAR MELIKSETYAN REVEALS How to Make Iranians’ New Year Interesting in Armenia
ItI
is not a secret that during the recent years Armenia has become a preferable recreation centre for Iranians. As a rule, every year in March many Iranians visit Armenia to celebrate their New Year. Yet, there is a viewpoint that Armenia as a tourist zone doesn’t offer various alternatives to be entertained thus depriving the tourists of the opportunity to spend their holiday in a more interesting and meaningful way. Hence in order to make Iranians’ holiday more abundant on March 24, 25 and 26 large-scale concert programs were held within the scope of which “TourInfo” magazine together with Yerevan Mall organized Spring Shopping Festival. The executive head of “TourInfo” magazine Edgar Meliksetyan told about the concerts and the festival. Spring Shopping Festivals are often organized in Turkey, in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) but in Armenia such an event for Iranians was organized for the first time. According to Edgar, the holiday in Armenia is convenient in terms of price as in other places both the tickets and the hotels are much more expensive. “Being well aware of all that, they will have another motive to visit our country”, said Edgar Meliksetyan. He also mentioned that “TourInfo” already started its first activities in organizing Iranians’ pastime a year ago when in the restaurant
