“Repeat at nights, when you can’t sleep/ Spring has returned to us, to Armenia…/ Spring has returned…and why am I not there?”, wrote Paruyr Sevak in one of his poems. After reading these lines, one wants to ask bravely: “I’m curious, why aren’t you in Armenia when it’s spring there?” Another Armenian poet Hovhannes Shiraz was singing: “Spring is in me, and I am singing, and everything is singing in Armenia”, reminding everyone that “one flower is not May yet, but it has the love of blossoming in it, /It has hundreds of spring in it, so that you know – it is your salvation”. Spring in Armenia usually arrives earlier than what the calendar says. It is filled with various colors. Here even those who are far from being artists fell as if they are. Some take photos, others make videos and some just enjoy the freedom of their souls forgetting about the worldly vanities. With spring the tourism season starts. We will tell you about the sightseeing, wonders, services and opportunities in Armenia at the international exhibition MITT in Moscow which will be attended by 2056 companies from 203 countries and regions all around the world. This issue of the magazine contains a guide for the most popular tourist attraction of our country. In spring we will celebrated the 2-year anniversary of our magazine. We can surely say that we are already firmly standing on our feet. The footprint of our magazine grows, we are already bilingual and we host guests from different countries who afterwards write wonderful feedbacks about our country wishing to come back. And they do come back, and they become one of us – friends, relatives, supporters. It is Spring! This is the time when you should visit Armenia!

Republic of Armenia The total area is 29, 743 km2 (11,484 sq. miles), which is one tenth the size of the historical Armenia. Armenia is a landlocked country located in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, in the north-east of the Armenian Highland, called the Historical Armenia. Located between the Black and Caspian Seas, the country is bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey. On April 19, 1992, the coat of arms of the First Republic of Armenia was restored (1918-1920). The authors were Alexander Tamanyan, an architect and an academic of Russian Academy of Arts and Hakob Kodjoyan, an artist. The national flag of Armenia consists of three horizontal bands of equal width, red on the top, blue in the middle and orange on the bottom. Yerevan Yerevan can easily be considered as one of the safest cities in the world. Late at night you can walk around in the city without any fear. Not many European countries can boast the same thing. If you are in Yerevan for the first time and you don’t have somebody to help and do not even have a map you don’t need to worry. The inner city isn’t too big if not considering its suburbs and further out districts. The city center is surrounded by an amphitheater of hills and the streets basically start from the Square and run across the outer circular boulevard. There are many options for transportation, such as mini-buses, buses and taxies, all of which work non-stop. But the beauty of Yerevan is such that it is well worth taking a walk to see. And if you get lost, the passers-by will help you to find the right direction. Fortunately, almost everyone in Yerevan speaks Russian and it isn’t too hard to find someone who speaks English.

TAXI
In Yerevan it is not common to try and flag down a personal car to get a ride. Instead you should always use taxi services. Taxies in Yerevan are readily available and are quite inexpensive. Mini-buses operate one after another and all you need to do is to raise your hand for them to stop. Simply stop the bus number you need and go to the desired destination paying 100 drams. Meanwhile, it is much easier to use taxi services since they are plenty in Yerevan. Tourists very often complain about one shortcoming of Yerevan - the bad traffic. The city wasn’t initially designed for so many cars, buses and taxis and that’s why the streets are often overloaded.
Stores:
Stores in Armenia offer a wide range of various souvenirs and gifts including the famous Armenian cognac. You can find virtually any cuisine of the world: Armenian, Arabic, Georgian, European, Chinese, etc., but be careful as prices may vary significantly. In general you can have a good and tasty meal in Yerevan and pay much less than you would in Moscow.
Water:
You can drink tap water in your hotel room, apartment and in the street out of small fountains (Arm. “tsaytaghbyur”). These are unique stone memorials, usually one meter high, running pure, tasty Armenian water. Just walk right up and have a refreshing drink. You can buy bottled water in any grocery store. atenadaran, the worldly known research institute of “M ancient manuscripts named after Mesrop Mashtots is one of
the biggest tourist attractions in Armenia. The huge interest towards Matenadaran is due to its manuscript collection of global significance. The manuscripts cover various spheres of medieval Armenian science and culture including such subjects as history, geography, grammar, philosophy, law, medicine, math, cosmology, translated literature and fiction, book art, music, etc. Quite impressive is the collection of foreign-language manuscripts of Matenadaran, among which dominate the Arabic and Persian manuscripts. A particular scientific interest is represented by Latin, Greek, Ethiopian, Hebrew, Syriac, Old Slavonic as well as manuscripts in other languages. The collection of Matenadaran helps to deeply understand the medieval Armenian culture in general, the unique synthesis of Eastern and Western mentalities.
Живопись Armenia Matenadaran museum complex represents one of the most advanced forms of medieval Armenian art - miniature. The characteristic feature of Armenian miniatures is the variety of styles of different schools such as Cilicia, Gladzor, Nagorno-Karabakh, Upper Armenia, Vaspurakan etc. Along with the permanent exposition, Matenadaran presents its numerous visitors temporary thematic exhibitions. In 2015 within the framework of events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Matenadaran will open the exposition called “Saved manuscripts” presenting the priceless collection consisting of 1467 manuscripts brought from Vaspurakan mainly thanks to the efforts Hovhannes Archimandrite. Hovhannes Archimandrite was born in 1879 in the city of Van. During the Genocide, he saved not only manuscripts but also the lives of Vaspurakan’s people. Sending the ships to the shore, he ensured the transportation of several thousands of people from neighboring villages. Thus around 12 000 people were able to hide on the island Lim. A bright example of saved manuscripts is the largest Armenian book called “Homilies of Mush”. During the Armenian Genocide in 1915, two refuge women divided the manuscript into two halves: they took one half with them and buried the other half in the courtyard of Erzrum Monastery. In 1921, the second half was found and today both parts are kept in Matenadaran. Almost all saved manuscripts have their unique history. Another manuscript named “Zeytun Gospel” is the first work of the prominent Cilician manuscript illuminator Toros Roslin. It was written and illustrated by him in 1256. The Gospel was kept in Zeytun for a long time and belonged to the noble family Surenyan-Basilosyan. During the Genocide along with the rest of the noble families, they were also deported to Deir-ez-Zor. Harutyun Ghazaryan, a family friend managed to convince the owner to give him the manuscript but unfortunately lost it on the way during the deportation. The manuscript remained in Marash. After some time a man came to Archimandrite Khachatur Ter-Ghazaryan and told him that he had a dream according to which he had to give the manuscript to him. The visitors of Matenadaran have a unique opportunity to see the manuscript within the scope of the exposition.

ARTSAKH TRADITIONAL
CARPET-MAKING
Carpet-making along with other types of applied arts has been the traditional occupation of the Armenian nation for millennia. In the Armenian Highland Artsakh province has a unique place among other provinces of Greater Hayk. The first written evidence on carpet weaving art on this land belongs to early middle ages. o wonder, that the legend about a N prince from western countries and a
fine carpet weaver Anahit is so popular in Artsakh. In response to his marriage proposal, she told him that she would only agree to marry him if he would learn some kind of craft. The historian of the 7th century Mosves Khorentasi in his work “Stories of Aluank country” tells that in Artsakh they used to weave samite from silk, colored carpets and other fabrics. The evidence on the fact that the traditions of Artsakh carpet making were continuing and developing is the preserved written source according to which in Parthava there was a carpet market in the 10th century that people used to call “Sunday”. Artsakh (today’s Nagorno Karabakh Republic) is one of the regions where the Armenian nation was formed as an ethnos. The Armenians living on this territory despite the fact that have regularly been exposed to invasions, robberies and violence for millennia have created a unique and exclusive art. Carpet weaving is inseparably tied with Artsakh families. Here the carpets are not just household items, but the house’s amulets, valuable and expensive gifts. The peculiarity of the quality of Armenian carpets and gorgs (rugs) is the silkiness and softness of the yarns that they

get from the local wool. Besides the Armenian carpets including the ones made in Artsakh outstand with rich variety of content, unique stylistics of ornaments. The ornaments of the carpets depict flowers, plants, animals as well as such geometrical shapes as polygon, rhombus and rectangle. The correct combination of all these shapes has resulted in creation of traditional Artsakh carpets. Artsakh carpets are known all over the world. One of the most popular ones is the carpet called “Vishapagorg” (dragon-carpet) and its various types, carpets featuring ornaments of diamond and polygon shapes, etc., which are common for all the centers of carpet weaving crafts: Gardman, Drjraberd, Gyulistan, Khachen, Varanda, Dizak. “KARABAKH CARPET” staying loyal to the ancient traditions, continues to present to the world the best examples of the Armenian, including Artsakh carpets that are weaved with great love and are of the highest quality.

It was put up based on a new play, which focused on the centennial of the Armenian Genocide and other topics actual in the Armenian society. One of the leading characters was Mother-Homeland who like an Iliad goddess would appear in most crucial moments and inspire the heroes. An older woman was present in the audience hall. She was excited, stressed though she was smiling. Not too many people know her personally but she was the woman that became the proto-image of Mother Armenia. That woman is Yevgeniya Muradyan who once inspired the sculptor Ara Harutyunyan to create the sculpture Mother-Homeland that became the symbol of the Armenian nation. But how did it happen?

The statue “Mother Armenia” is situated in “Haghtanak” Park (the name translates from Armenian as “Victory”). There was a time when Stalin’s sculpture by sculptor Sergey Merkurov was standing there. It was the highest statue in all of the Soviet Union. The generalissimo himself would come to look at his statue. Then it was taken down, though partially: they say that under the hem and shield of “Mother Armenia” the boots of Joseph Stalin are hidden. Zhenya was only eighteen years old; she had just finished school and had to enter the university. The “fatal” meeting with sculptor Ara Harutyunyan took place when the girl together with her mother was standing in the line for tomatoes. It was in flaming August. A man in his thirties appeared in the crowd. He froze as soon as he noticed Yevgeniya. The girl didn’t feel comfortable by his staring, she told her mother that he looked suspicious to her and they left. But the man followed them. “He approached my mother and told her that he was the sculptor Ara Harutyunyan who had received an order from the government and had to sculpt Mother Armenia to replace the statue dedicated to Stalin”, remembers

Yevgeniya Muradyan. “I was the right person for him. He asked my mother’s permission for me to pose for him. However, my mother refused since at that time it would be a shameful thing to do. Ara, nevertheless gave us his phone number. I came home and started telling the story passionately. It turned out that my brother was Ara Harutyunyan’s student in the Art College. I went to his workshop with my brother. Sculpturing took him only five or six sessions. The plaster copy of the statue was a little bit different from me: the eyebrows of the statue were connected on the bridge of the nose and the sculptor explained to me that that was the eyebrow shape of most of the Armenian girls.” Zhenya graduated from the University, became a teacher of the Russian language and had two children. Many things happened in her life - both good and bad. “I wasn’t such a strong woman but the image of Mother Armenia obliged me to become stronger”, tells Yevgeniya. “I was assigned managerial positions. I gave my appearance to Mother Armenia, and she in turn gave me her image.”
The Museum of Military Defense is situated in the pedestal of “Mother Armenia” statue where exhibits belonging to the periods of Great Patriotic and Karabakh wars are displayed. The Armenians have had to lose and win back their Motherland, asserting their rights on existence. They know how fragile the world is and how difficult it is to achieve victory. The woman sheathes the sword and there is a shield at her feet. This is Mother Armenia. That's, indeed the way she is! Moreover, this gesture doesn't symbolize the victory of winners but peacefulness. The Armenians have never started wars, they have only been protecting their Motherland when there has been no other way to protect the native Armenian piece of land. Much have they lost during these wars but they have survived and become stronger.

Akhtamar island:
the land of the armenian glory The ancient Armenian land – Akhtamar Island in the Lake Van (in present-day Turkey)… During 10-11th centuries the Armenian kings of Artsruni dynasty chose the island as one of their residencies. The church of Saint Cross (915-921, by architect Manuel), a unique memorial of the medieval Armenian architecture, decorated with frescoes and rich stone carving, as well as ruins of the port (10th century) have survived on the island. Try and you will hear that the wind and the waves as if are whispering, “A-aakh! Ta-a-a-mar!”
After climbing to the top of Mount Ararat and go-
ing down to Dogubayazit (Bayazet) we offhandedly headed to Lake Van to get our tired feet wet. I’ll be honest, there is no a better sea for Armenians than Lake Van which is twice as big as Lake Sevan. The locals still believe in the legend about the Van monster that’s why there are few brave people who dare to enter the water. The coastal area is clean, there are cafes, small hotels and comfortable places for camping equipped with showers, toilets and locker rooms. After you pay around two thousand drams, you can pitch a tent on the neat territory and enjoy all the amenities. Food in the café is much cheaper than in Yerevan. Tareekh is the species of fish found only in Lake Van. However, besides this fish there is no other in this lake. It is also quite small. Now in Armenia people ask me what the fish tasted like. One thing is for sure; once you taste tareekh you will be certain that only tareekh has that particular taste. On the very first day we headed to Akhtamar Island. In the Church of Holy Cross on which thanks God they mounted a cross – it is forbidden to sing Armenian songs, since it “irritates other nationalities”. However, the security guards are patient. The church is significant by its numerous frescoes and bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Old and New Testaments. The seat of Akhtamar Catholicosate of the Armenian Church was located here since 1113. At the end of the 18th century afGATE 24
ter long debates between the two Catholicosates in regards to the distinction of their competences, the primacy of Echmiadzin was recognized. At the end of the 19th century, the Akhtamar Catholicosate had 2 dioceses with 302 churches and 58 monasteries. In 1895, the dioceses were transferred to the jurisdiction of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople. The monastery was deserted after the tragic events in the history of the Armenian people – the Genocide of 1915. While looking around the interior and the altar, suddenly an inscription caught my eye curved on the wall: “Kyazim”. It would seem that there
was nothing strange, just a Turkish male name. But not for the Armenians! In 1920, Kyazim Karabekir was the pasha that led the military actions against Armenia. Later Kars Treaty was concluded in 1921 during the conference held in the city of Kars, which was called to execute the Moscow Treaty signed between RSFSR and Turkey couple of months earlier. “Thanks to” the Treaty of Kars Armenia lost several of its cities and the symbol of Armenia – Mount Ararat that passed to Turkey. Empire. The wiped out images of saints are crying with empty eyes. Rusty nails in the walls are bleeding with terra cotta. There were a bride and a groom walking around the church along with the wedding procession. We went to them to find out their nationality. It turned out they were Kurds. You should see how the groom's face changed when he was asked whether he was not Armenian. As if he was taken by surprise by revealing a secret that, he had hidden deep in the roots. It turned out that the place was chosen only for photo shoot since the place was so beautiful, and since a beautiful legend of a great love is tied to it. Once upon a time king Artashes had a beautiful daughter named Tamar. The king began to fear that someone from the rejected suitors might go to war on his kingdom for the beauty or the evil Vishap would kidnap her before he would decide whom his daughter should marry. And he began to look for a decent husband for her, but the girl's heart was no more free and her beloved was the poor guy Azat, who had nothing but his beauty, strength and courage. The royal father, of course, opposed this, and the waters of Van separated the lovers. Nevertheless, Tamar found a way out: every evening, Tamar would build a fire on the shore, creating a guiding light which her lover followed. The light of that fire protected the young man from the dark waters of Lake Van. However, the servants of the king saw the lovers once and told Artashes about it. The fire extinguished that night and the young man, not knowing where to swim, called out to his beloved, “Akh, Tamar!” These were his last words that cut through the darkness of the night. From then on, the island on Lake Van has been called Akhtamar in honor of this sad legend about love... GATE 26
…The rabbits are all over the island; people sell plaster statues of Van cat. Magnets with a picture of this beauty are half the price of tareekh. We went for swimming. The water, transparent even at the depth is warm and gentle. It is so salty that it seems it's impossible to drawn. It's amazing that no one swims in the lake. Van monster is favorable towards us. The shoreline is covered with shards. On two square meters, we collected half a pitcher of them. ...Some of the guys camped out right on the shore of the lake, under the starry sky, to sleep under the gentle whisper of water, the rest - in tents. Those who slept on the shore, rushed into the water barely awake. One of our friends, Edgar was all the time diving with a snorkel looking for something. When I was swimming by him, he jumped out of the water and shouted: “I found it! I finally found it!” A golden ring was sparkling in his hand. We immediately rewrote the love story of Tamar: the unlucky young man was swimming to Tamar, and felt that he didn’t have any more strength to swim further and the fire was fading, the guy indignantly threw the ring into the water and exclaimed: "Why the hell do I need to get to that island?! Can’t I find a girl on the shore?!” …To spend only couple of days on the shore of Lake Van is not enough. One shall stay here at least several weeks. Of course, the beach is stony but it’s not any worse than Batumi. Instead, the water is warm and still, the beach is clean, there are no jellyfish and no one tries to push pop-corn... Finally, this is the place to get closer to roots. Although for many Armenians, this is very painful. Some of my friends say that they don’t go to the Western Armenia since they are afraid of their reaction…
Motherland is the place where your roots come from from and where you shall return.

the SECRET
OF PUSHKIN PASSAGE
The village of Herheri in Lori region is famous for Pushkin Passage. As witnessed by Alexander Sergeyevich himself in his literary called “Jurney to Arzrum” on June 11, 1829 on his way to Erzrum he met a cart that was carrying Griboyedov’s body. Did this really happen? It turns out that there is evidence that this could not happen and the meeting was the result of the poet’s imagination. These were the thoughts torturing me when I went to Pushkin passage to participate in the fest devoted to Russian poetry, which has already become a tradition in Armenia.
T
he further investigations resulted in the following. In May 1828, Alexander Pushkin unsuccessfully asked for permission to leave for Caucasus or abroad, and after his unhappy marriage with the beauty Natalya Goncharova, the poet willfully left for Caucasus in 1829. This journey became the base for such famous literary works as “Journey to Arzrum”, “Caucasus”, “On the hills of Georgia”, “Collapse”. So did Pushkin really meet the coffin with Griboyedov’s body in it on one of the passages under Jelal-oghlu travelling from Tiflis to the Turkish front? This quesGATE 28

tion bothers many researchers. In his work called, “Journey to Arzrum” the poet wrote: “I started climbing Bezobdal, the mountain that separates Georgia from ancient Armenia… After having rested for several minutes I moved forward and on the banks of the river, I saw the castle Herheri right in front of me. Three streams were flowing down the high bank with noise and foam. I crossed the river. Two bullocks harnessed to the cart were coming up the road. Several Georgians were following the cart. “Where are you from?” I asked. “From Tehran.” “What are you taking in the cart?” “Griboyedov”, was the answer. It was the body of the murdered Griboyedov. They were taking it to Tiflis. I wouldn’t think that would ever meet our Griboyedov again! Last time I met him in Petersburg before he left for Persia. He was sad and had strange feelings.” A riot was provoked in Tehran on January 30, 1829, which resulted in the death of the diplomat Alexander Griboyedov. The researcher Ivan Yakovlevich Semyonov in his book named “Russians in the history of Armenia” wrote: “In his description regarding the meeting with Griboyedov’s body, Pushkin made a mistake mentioning that the body was transported by a group of Georgians. Yuri Tinyanov that has carefully researched the picture of the murder and transportation of Griboyedov’s body to Tiflis in his work called “The death of Vazir-Mukhtar” described the events in a more reliable manner saying that the body was transported by Armenians – Avetik Kuzinyan, an old friend of Griboyedov and GATE 30
several others.” On May 2, the dead body of Griboyedov was delivered to Nakhichevan for further transportation to Tiflis. This is witnessed by the Report of Andrey Karlovich Amburger to Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich regarding the meeting of Alexander Sergeyevich with Griboyedov’s body in Nakhichevan. On July 18, Griboyedov’s body was delivered to Tiflis and buried in the Monastery of Saint David. The road from Nakhichevan to Tiflis on those days people would pass during a week meanwhile according to the mentioned dates it took him half a month, which confuses
the researchers. Also the focus is on the fact that one can get to Bezobdal passage only after passing Herheri and not vice versa, as Pushkin has described. Natan Yakovlevich Eidelman proves that the meeting between Pushkin and Griboyedov’s body was not in Pushkin’s records and was included in the work much later. In 1937 to the 100th anniversary of the poet’s death on top of the mountain Bezobdal a massive monument-fountain was built in honor of the meeting of Pushkin with the body of Griboyedov. In my opinion it’s a wonderful tradition – to build a “pulpulak” in memory of the deceased from which any passer-by can drink the pure spring water that’s why such fountains with inscriptions are numerous in the country of Hayk. In 2005, the monument was reconstructed and transferred from the top of Pushkin passage to the highway which provided an easier access to it. Has Pushkin really met with Griboyedov’s body or not? Whatever happened, but the myth that tortures minds exists and that’s what matters.

He became a witness of the Armenian Genocide and by taking hundreds of photos tried to present the tragic events to the German society. rmenia was once a country from sea to sea, a A unique bridge between the North and South, East and
West. All the important trade routes, including the well-known Silk Road passed through Armenia. Since the times when the Turkic tribes from the Far East and Central Asia invaded the territory of Armenia and Asia Minor, the genocide policy towards the Armenian nation was predetermined. During the formation period of the Ottoman Empire, the Armenians were classified as “gyavurs”, which means infidels. During five centuries, the Armenians were subjected to violence, prosecutions and robberies. The execution of mass slaughters (the Genocide of Armenians became part of the state policy during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II) started from the 90s of the 19th century. 300 000 people became the victims of the Turkish yataghan, 500 000 lost their homes and any means for existence, 400 000 became widows and orphans. The annihilation of Armenians was a thoroughly planned, official operation aiming at solving “the Armenian issue”, i.e. clearing territories from unwanted Armenians. In 1908, a state revolution took place in the Ottoman Empire and the government was taken over by Yung Turks. Under the slogans of freedom, equality and brotherhood they gained the support of nations who had been suffering under the Sultan's yoke. As soon as they came to power, Young Turks started to implement the ideology of Pan-Turkism and Pan-Islamism. They superseded Abdul Hamid II in their cruelty and hunger of blood. For resolving the national question, they chose the path of destruction of nations of other religions. Their first step in bringing to life the idea was the mass killings of Armenian in the city of Adana in spring of 1909. Within several days around 30 000 people were killed. Before entering the First World War in 1914, the Young Turks managed to execute the mass deportation and massacres of the Armenian population in Western Armenia, Cilicia and other regions. The special body called “Executive Committee of Three” comprised of Doctor Nazim, Shakir Behaeddin and Midhat Shyukri was established to bring into life the plan of complete extermination of Armenians. Аram Khachaturyan:
“Even under spotlights i am very lovely”
Khachaturyan wrote to her then:
On May 24, 1903 in the village of Kojori not far from Tiflis (Tbilisi) the Soviet composer, director, tutor and public figure Aram Ilyich Khachaturyan was born. One of the prominent figures of the 20 th century music, winner of four Stalin Prizes, Aram loved music since childhood. He was playing the piano, horn and trumpet in the school chapel, though his parents did not approve of his passion. Khachaturyan could seriously take up music only when he was 19 years old. Our correspondent talked to the famous historian, music expert Nami Mikoyan who was in good relations with maestro and wrote a dissertation on film scores of Aram Khachaturyan.
“Dear Nami! I love you very much. After reading your dissertation, I started respecting you even more. (Please, don’t tell anyone that I love you). Thank you! Aram Khachaturyan, 20. 10. 1974.”
Below is the interview with Nami Mikoyan: GATE GATE34 8
Живопись Armenia Nami, what do you think about the thesis there are no coincidences and that all ? that meetings happen at the right time and in the right place, such as your meeting with maestro Khachaturyan? : Aram Khachaturyan is such greatness that I cannot even discuss this topic. This was a serious meeting not only because it made me write a dissertation about film scores but also any meeting with an original person is truly enriching. Especially when we are talking about somebody like Aram Khachaturyan. ? What do you think about the patriotism of the great composer? : I cannot clearly define this concept, because I myself was born in Georgia and I love Tbilisi very much. I grew up in Armenia, and I love this land, I live in Moscow for 60 years now and just cannot help loving the Russian capital. Khachaturyan grew up on Armenian music and songs though he was geographically separated from the motherland. In the late 30s, Khachaturyan together with Ruben Simonov and Alexander Melik-Pashayev were invited to Yerevan for the preparation of the First Decade of Armenian Art, which was to be held in Moscow. Then the first secretary of the Communist Party of Armenia Grigoriy Arutinov (Harutyunyan) suggested Aram to write the ballet “Gayane” and gave him a house on Baghramyan street so that he would visit Yerevan more often and it would feel like home there. Unfortunately, he was always very busy. Then Khachaturyan was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. So gradually in the course of his life, he began to feel more tied to Armenia and Armenian culture. ? Did he manage to follow the Armenian traditions? : Aram Khachaturyan used to always host famous people from Armenia. He would love to follow traditions but he didn’t have much luck in household matters. He had to take care of everything. Suppose there were no matches in the house, and he would immediately go to get them. There were people who would help him in shopping and cooking. Of course, he was the center of the family, very much wanted to observe Armenian traditions and way of life, though didn’t succeed much.
? What was he like in social life? : He was a wonderful, miraculously kind big child.
With quite an impressive appearance, he wasn’t that handsome, but was a very pleasant noble man, with curly hair and huge eyes. He liked to dress emphatically. Once we were at the premiere of “Spartak” performance in Moscow. And Khachaturyan, who was sitting next to me, suddenly asked me: “Did you notice that I am wearing a red vest?” It was so childishly cute! Aram Khachaturyan was a very sociable and kind-hearted man. Once I was asked to write an article about film scores. I went to Khachaturyan with this question. And he said to me: “So good to hear! No one has written about my film scores yet!” In the result, I not only wrote the article but a dissertation. He was not ambitious but loved to be noticed and there was so much childishness in that longing of his. It’s strange, but despite his fame Aram Khachaturyan was a very lonely man. ? What have you learned from this relationship? : Of course, it would be kindness. This feature is characteristic to great and very talented people. The person talented from God is open; he speaks to people through his work. That’s where his kind attitude towards them comes from. I love Aram for his openness. He could say something unexpected, something that not everyone would like, but it did not matter, because it was not from malice, but because of his naivety.

ARAGATS DICTATES THE EXPERIENCES OF THE PAST AND FUTURE Every mountain in Armenia is sacred. The most wonderful legends and tales are tied with each of the mountains. Aragats is the highest point in Armenia and belongs to the category of mystical peaks. It tests people, changes fates… Here one feels the closeness to the sky and the holiness of the earth. They say that Gregory the Illuminator himself used to climb the mountain to pray. His way was enlightened by a lamp hanging from the sky. And even in our days the ordained can see a light on the top of the mountain. According to a legend, the God of Creation Aray himself resides on Aragats. That’s why after you decide to climb the mountain don’t forget to greet the proto-Armenian God.

We and our Живопись mountains
Footsteps in the dark. Headlamps were jumping like crickets, catching from the darkness the backs of those walking ahead. The streams were buzzing in the rocks, which modestly hid in their depths punching their way, create a unique melody. I was focused on my steps, as if lost in a trance, which gives and takes lives, expanding the boundaries of Space and Time. And so harmonious was the silence, which at that moment was tied with the silence of birds and animals that it was scary to breathe. In my concentration, I see the smile of God, and I feel that I love you. I love you, Aragats... With silent steps and thinking about you I entered the Immortality of Our Second. And my heart trembled like a meadow bell, that had found itself in the mountains, and was being filled with the light from the lamp, which the elderly Gregory was holding above the Northern slope. The mountain dictates the experiences of the Past and Future but we, but we through its invisible door enter the infinite of the Impossible.
The southern peak. The pink lazy dawn made us look back. In the dark blue mirror-like plateau of the Stone Lake the sky was drowning with its rare, gloomy and sleepy clouds. The day promised to be bright and sunny, but the weather is so deceptive in the mountains, which are ruled by their own Gods. And the Majestic Ara, sitting on his massive throne, smiles indulgently. We greeted him, asking for his permission to continue our way. Perhaps we will live for a hundred years on this earth, but after entering into the field of the Mountain, I felt that we have already lived a thousand years, and ahead is Our Time with its Sense of the Meaning of Life, and it is ten times as longer.
Aragats is the fourth highest mountain in the Armenian Highland and is the highest peak in Armenia. It has 4 peaks: the highest one is the northern peak (4095 m), the eastern peak is 4007 m, the western one is 3916 m and the southern one is 3879 m.

I tasted iron in my mouth. We left whispering a prayer: “Reconcile with God, so that the fire of thy fury doesn’t burn us...” ...I learned to feel you, Aragats, walking back and forth all your paths. And every time I thank you for that Moment when you blessed me for that through after many tests...

MONASTERY MAKARAVANK
akaravank monastery complex is an example of Đœ one of the most significant monuments of medieval
Armenian architecture, which has survived to our days in good condition. It consists of the main church, the porch, and two ancient churches and was once surrounded by a thick wall. Back in the day, there was a school in the church and a large village in the neighborhood. The Church of the Holy Virgin (Surb Astvatsatsin) was built by Hovhannes, the abbot of Makaravank in 1198. Fan-shaped crowns of windows and edging of niches are decorated with alto-relievo images depicting rosettes, birds, lions, scenes of battles between an eagle and a vishap. The main church was built in 1205. The coat of arms of the famous constructor of the time Prince Vache I Vachutyan has survived depicting the image of pair of eagles. Images of fishes stand out with their plasticity and realism. On one of the stars there is the sculptural portrait of the architect of the church with instruments in his hands and his name - Yeritasard. The design of the temple is impressive - a highly artistic relief image of an eagle holding a calf in its claws, zoomorphic, floral ornaments and biblical scenes (Job in the throat of a whale), decorative portals with chess masonry. The porch was erected in 1207 by the same prince. To the east, it is adjacent to the ancient church, and to

But when you are in Makaravank Monastery (10th-13th centuries) located on the treed slopes of Paytatap mountain in Tavush Region, you understand how deeply we have grown into the urban life, have gone far from our true selves. Meanwhile here one can find silence and God’s mercy. Taking into consideration the fact that lots of ancient sources about Armenia and its churches have survived, there is no written evidence about Makaravank except for the inscriptions on the walls of the church that tell us about its history full of secrets.

Each stone in Armenia speaks about ancient history on the base plate of the dome - the initials of the master-builders. The churches were built using dark pink andesite and red tuff, while the adjacent buildings were built from stones of green hue. In the monastery courtyard, according to the general floorplan, in addition to the main temple and church of the Holy Virgin, a temple of the 10th century, the chapel of 12th-13th centuries, the bakery of the 13th century, the service room of parishioners of 12th-13th centuries, the main entrance of 12th-13th centuries, as well as the remains of the wall have survived. The last restoration of the monastery was performed during 1970 - 1980. Currently, due to the severe activation of landslide processes, the monastery is in danger of total destruction. For preserving the memorial complex immediate elaboration and implementation of anti-landslide measures is required. Leaving the monastery, do not forget to drink or take some spring water with you that still flow through the ancient pottery pipes. This fountain has pushed its way ten centuries ago... THE tEMPLE OF THE GOD OF SUN IN GARNI
G arni fortress was built by the Armenian King
Trdat the First in 76 B.C. (1st century B.C.). This is witnessed by an inscription in Greek: “Helios! Trdat the Great, the mighty King of Great Armenia built the agarak for the queen and this invincible fortress on the eleventh year of his reign…” The fortress walls and towers are built of huge slabs of basalt, without solution and are connected by iron clamps. The thickness of the fortress walls is 2,07-2,12 m and the length along the entire perimeter (along with the towers) is 314,28 m. In some places, 12-14 rows with the height of 6-7 m have been preserved. You can get inside the fortress only through the gates with the width of a cart. The temple is built greatly influenced by Hellenic architecture. Along the width of the facade nine massive steps are stretching with the height of 30 cm which give majesty and solemnity to the construction. Every step is another bow to God Mihr! The invincible stronghold located on a triangle cape at the edge of the deep gorge protected the people from foreign invasions for more than 1000 years. The gorge is significant by its slopes consisting of straight hexagonal prisms, which are referred to as the “Symphony of Stones”. In the remaining part of the stronghold a huge defensive

Mihr is the God of the Sun, Light of Heaven and Truth in the ancient Armenian mythology. And no wonder that during joyful spring days when the sun is not burning yet but has mercy on us, when the air is filled with the aroma of primulas, one just craves to be in this place, to stand at the edge of the gorge, breathe in the fresh air and absorb the power of centuries.
system is created – a powerful fortress wall with fourteen towers. And below is the mountain river Azat. This is how the writer Muratsan described Garni in his play “Gevorg Marzpetuni”: “Listen to me! Garni is strong and invincible. The enemy can’t capture it only if there are no traitors and we have enough reserves. Let’s leave only one hundred soldiers in Garni since it will be enough to protect the fortress.” This was an extreme measure taken by the commander being convinced in the reliability of the fortress though usually it was protected by numerous soldiers. Members of the Armenian royal families loved this place. Why wouldn’t they? The place is safe, it’s beautiful and the air is fresh. Moreover, it is not far from Erebuni – the fortress-foundation of Yerevan! In 1679 because of a mighty earthquake, the temple was almost destroyed. In the 19th century, the remains of the temple drew the attention of numerous researchers and travelers such as Chardin, Morier, Ker Porter, Telfer, Marr, Smirnoff, Romanov, Buniatyan, Trever, Manandyan, etc. In 1834, the French researcher Dubois de Montpereux attempted to recreate the exact copy of the project. GANDZASAR MONASTERY
ear the village of Vank in Nagorno-Karabakh N Republic raises a hill on which the beautiful and
invincible Gandzasar is standing. It is invincible because it has passed through centuries, many wars have taken place around its walls with the last one - in the past century. During the Karabakh war as a result of bombardment by Azerbaijani longrange artillery and military aviation the monastery was harmed - the main temple of the complex was damaged and the building of the monastery was destroyed. Nevertheless, today the monastery is fully renovated. In the outer wall of the monastery a missile has remained forever, next to which there is an inscription: “The church was attacked on October 29, 1992. An unexploded missile. Do not touch!” Gandzasar was first mentioned by the Armenian Catholicos Ananias Mokatsi in the middle of the 10th century. The new church, which we can see today, was built on the site of the old one by Prince Hasan Jalal Dola, “a devout, God-fearing and humble man, an Armenian by origin,” as stated in the sources. In addition, it was consecrated in July 1240. According to a legend, in the burial vault of the temple the head of John the Baptist severed by Herod is buried, brought here from Cilician Armenia during the Crusades. Due to this he church was named as St. Hovhannes Mkrtich (St. John the Baptist).

In July 2015, 775 years will mark since the establishment of the outstanding monument of Armenian culture Gandzasar Monastery. Gandzasar means “Treasure Mountain” in Armenan. Indeed, this place is filled with treasures. The famous French art historian, Professor Charles Diehl (1859 - 1944) from the University of Paris included Gandzasar in the list of five masterpieces of Armenian monumental art that are part of the treasury of world architecture.
Gandzasar served as the residence and the sepulcher of a princely family Hasan Jalalyans, that ruled the region of Khachen. In the 14th century, it became the house of the Aghvan Catholicos of the Armenian Church and retained its status until 1815. It is from Gandzasar that in 1701 the famous treatments of Eastern Armenians were sent to Peter the Great asking for support and military aid from Russians in liberation from the Persian-Turkish yoke. The temple is decorated with various law reliefs. They include the Crucifixion, Adam and Eve, princes of Khachen and others. Hasan Jalal Vakhtangyan, princes of Khachen region and the bishops of their dynasty were buried in the monastery. Hasan’s grave is located in the gavit, in front of the entrance to the main hall of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. It is impossible not to pay attention to it while walking by. In the inner courtyard, there are various memorials, including numerous cross-stones. Near the temple the tomb of Khatun, the daughter of Hasan Jalal is located, who died as an infant. Make sure to walk around the temple, and on the southern wall, you will find a barely visible clock face with a hole in the middle: it is a sundial! Insert a wand, and you will be surprised – for almost eight centuries, this clock shows the correct time. Find us online at: www.armeniatravel.ru

The price of the war
We won! But what was the price of the victory? In total, the Soviet Union lost around 27 million people (14% of the population as per 1940 census) during the Second World War. Only in Leningrad because of the blockade, more than 1 million people died of hunger and diseases, which is significantly more than the total losses incurred by England and USA. The Armenians fought selflessly in all the bloody battles standing out with their bravery. That’s why half of them (275 thousand) were deceased in various fronts of the Patriotic War. Thus, in the historical battle of Stalingrad more than 30 000 Armenian soldiers participated, 10 000 of them died in the battles fighting for the Motherland. In the battle for Caucasus 100 000 Armenian soldiers took part. There the losses were more significant. Six Armenians were awarded with the Title of Hero of the Soviet Union, three
of them – postmortem (Hunan Avetisyan, Suren Arakelyan, Jaan Karakhanyan). More than 30 000 Armenian soldiers and commanders were part of various branches of troops during the Kursk battle which played a significant role in the victory over the fascists. This was the bloodiest battle in the history of humanity that was decisive for the further course of the war. The losses on both sides were unbelievably huge. Many Armenian soldiers and commanders died and were awarded with various orders and medals of the Soviet Union postmortem, three of them were awarded with the Title of the Hero of the Soviet Union postmortem (Vladimir Ionesyan, Grigoriy Kalustov, Khachatur Melkonyan).
On behalf of our magazine: All the veterans of the Patriotic War are in their 90s. They are living modest lives; many of them are alone or with a spouse without the support of their close relatives. The war has left a mark on them: most of them were seriously injured and those injuries remind of themselves more and more with age. This category of veterans needs material and psychological support. We wish that these heroes would not be left without the attention of those who are able to help.

The legend
For armenians lavash is above and beyond everything
The Armenian lavash was inscribed on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. The decision was made during the meeting of Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Earlier among the country’s cultural heritage were recognized Armenian crossstones art, the Duduk and its music and the medieval Armenian epic of “David of Sassoun”.
The Armenians have a unique attitude towards
bread. “My father used to stand while cutting bread standing”, wrote the famous writer, publicist and traveler Zori Balayan. “Let’s eat” in Armenian sounds as “mi ktor hats” which in word for word translation means “a piece of bread”. What a table without bread?! Moreover, one cannot live without lavash in Armenia, the unflavored white thin layer made of wheat flour that is baked for the whole winter. Only the Armenian housewives know how to keep lavash correctly and for a long period of time: they do their magic at the red-hot tonir baking the thin GATE 50
layers, place them into the pantry, and then whenever it is needed, they spray it with water and refresh the bread. This type of bread is convenient to use both on a daily basis and during camping, not to mention the shepherds who live in the mountains in summers, eat cheese with lavash and drink tan (diary product made from matsun, seasoned with salt and herbs). General Aleksey Alekseyevich Brusilov at the end of the 19th century after several successful battles in Caucasus front advancing the occupied territories described the welcoming of the Armenian people in his memoirs: “Bells were ringing in churches, people were bringing the flat Armenian bread, salty sheep cheese, wine…” Tonirs and remains of lavash in them found in the result of archeological excavations, witness that lavash was widely spread in Armenia since ancient times. One such piece of burnt bread was found already at the beginning of the 20th century in the medieval Armenian capital Ani during the excavations of the city by the Russian Community of Archeologists.

The legend
the Armenian king Aram who was captured by the Assyrian king Nebuchadnezzar in one of the battles. Nebuchadnezzar then declared: “You will not eat for ten days. Then on the 11th day, you and I will have an archery competition. If you win, then you're stronger than me and I'll let you go to your people with gifts that only a king deserves.” Aram asked for the most beautiful shield to be brought to him from his motherland. The Armenian soldiers prepared the shield for their king and hid thin pieces of lavash inside the copper plating. There are numerous legends about the Armenian bread that have passed to us through centuries. It’s no accidental that nowadays the Armenians put lavash on the shoulders of the newlyweds so that they live a prosperous and fortunate life together. Moreover, this is coming from the god of War Vahagn and goddess of Love Astghik. The god of all gods Aramazd put lavash on the shoulder of the bride. On their way to the castle, it slipped off her shoulder and then Aramazd shouted: “The girl that dropped the bread onto the ground cannot become a good wife and a mother.” Thus, the wedding was cancelled. Another legend tells about GATE 52
On the eleventh day, Aram and Nebuchadnezzar, as agreed, went to the shooting range. The Assyrian king was convinced that Aram, who had been left without food, would be exhausted and weak. But it was not to be! Aram won the battle and returned to his country with glory! That’s how lavash saved the Armenian king! Lavash is used not only as a bread but also it is used in making various dishes such as snacks with various fillings, for example rolls with cheese, greens, curds, meat, fish. Another advantage of lavash is that it’s a great replacement to yeast bread.

This Portuguese man managed to fulfil one of the unique journeys of his time overcoming the distance of six thousand kilometers and rediscovering Beijing for Europe. On the eve of the tercentenary of this great event, in 1907, on the territory of Villa Franca a monument depicting Bento de Góis was erected… in a garb of Armenian merchants. It all started in 1598, when the capital of Mughal India ruled by Akbar the Great, a seventyyear-old Muslim merchant arrived. Whether he was too drunk, or wanted to attract the attention of high-ranking guests, among whom was Jerome Xavier himself, the grandnephew of the co-founder of the Jesuit Order, the old man began to tell a story about some great eastern kingdom with countless cities, so crowded that the entire population of India could be accomGATE 56

modated in one of them. However, the most incredible thing in his story was that, allegedly, in the capital of that kingdom Christians were living. The only Christian community far to the east was formed due to the activities of the Order of the Jesuits. This was well known to Jerome Xavier. That information about the Christians led him to organize a research expedition to the mysterious country, which every now and then a merchant called with unfamiliar word “China” with a capital “Khanbaliq” (the fact is that in the 17 th century China was known to Europeans by another name: Cina or Chin). Then Jerome Xavier thought to himself, if this “China” place, which was undoubtedly the famous “Cathay” from the book of Marco Polo, be the same country as “Chin”? The idea of the expedition was approved by Pope Clement VIII and Philip III, King of Spain. Only one of the many Jesuit brothers volunteered to go on the long journey - Portuguese Bento de Góis, who spoke Persian and was well familiar with Muslim customs. Chronicles have retained a remarkable fact about how Bento who took Armenian identity and garbs of ArGATE 58
menian merchants to freely cross the lands of the eastern countries on his way to China. The Armenians have had the reputation of skillful merchants since ancient times. They did not have a strong power that could threaten the sovereignty of other countries, they were not engaged in missionary work - all these factors had created an image of neutral traders who were favorably accepted both by Christian and Muslim rulers. In Lahore, Bento hired a young Armenian man named Sahak residing in that city, who agreed to show the way to China. In December 1602, the two “Armenians” joined the caravan, consisting of more than 500 people, and went in the wilds of East. Ahead lay hundreds of miles of impassable areas - mountain passes, lifeless deserts, territories invaded by tribal wars. Three months after they had started their journey, Bento and Sahak passed the Hindu Kush mountain range, and then the Pamir Mountains, that once stopped the army of Alexander the Great. It took a few more months to cross the Gobi desert, and then Sahak led Góis to the Great Wall of China. Thus, after a journey of Marco Polo, it was the first successful attempt to reach China through Central Asia. It soon became clear that the Christian community did exist in the capital of Greater China; moreover, the name of one of the missionaries - Matteo Ricci, was well known to Bento. There was no doubt that “China” and “Cina” were the same country. According to British historian Henry Yule, the expedition made “Cathay finally disappear from view, leaving China only in the mouths and minds of men”. However, Bento’s luck ran out and he did not get to Beijing. The Ming Empire had fairly restrictive rules for foreigners' entry into the country, and the travelers were detained in the city of Suzhou. Actually, the was only one foreign caravan heading to Beijing every six years and only two years had passed since the last

one. Góis wrote a letter to the Matteo Ricci sent a letter informing about their desperate condition. In the meantime, Bento and Isaac, virtually imprisoned in the border city, had to sell their assets as well as all precious gifts they had kept for the Chinese emperor at the local market. Anguish and difficulties in exile took the powers of Bento de Góis and he got seriously sick. One spring day in 1607, someone informed Sahak of the arrival of an unknown Jesuit. It was the messenger of Matteo Ricci himself, a young Chinese Jesuit Lay Brother named Giovanni Fernandes, who was assigned to get the travelers to Beijing. However, Bento’s condition was getting worse and worse despite that Sahak and Fernandes made every effort to encourage the old man. They even managed to cook up a dinner consisting exclusively of European dishes ... But, unfortunately, on April 11, 1607, exactly two weeks after the arrival of Fernandes, the Portuguese man passed away thousands of miles away from home. Sahak bitterly mourned the death of his friend - after all, they had spent five years on the road together, overcoming many difficulties. During the following months the young Armenian man managed to first get to Beijing, where he was warmly welcomed by fellow Je-
suits, and then to the island of Macau - the main trade port of Europeans in China. He returned to India from there. A week later, his ship was captured by Malacca pirates. Without thinking twice, they took Sahak below the deck together with the slaves. Who knows what would happen to him if the captain wouldn’t accidentally learn about his recent journey? He invited Sahak to his cabin to talk to the prisoner in person. Apparently, the Armenian was able to make a decent impression on the pirate captain, as he soon ordered to prepare a separate ship to take Sahak home. When they reached India, Sahak learned the tragic news that his entire family was dead during his five-year absence. Broken-hearted, the Armenian decided to stay in the Portuguese city Chawla, 60 kilometers from the presentday Bombay. This is the last thing known about Sahak. The world would have never known about the fate of Bento de Góis and events that took place four hundred years ago, if father Matteo hadn’t written the story told by Sahak in Beijing and if the historian, Nicolas Trigault hadn’t published it in Latin. The book has since been republished more than two dozen times and was first translated into Russian in 2015.

most POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN ARMENIA AND IN KARABAKH
The statement that Armenia is a very attractive country for tourists is not unfounded: every year the interest towards the country grows attracting more and more visitors to both Yerevan and most remote areas of the country, famous for its numerous attractions. It’s interesting, but the first time tourists come to Armenia with caution, falling for the popular belief that it’s not safe in the country due to the long lasting Karabakh conflict, which of course, is not true. However, they come here for the second time answering the call of the heart, and the third time they make sure to visit Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh Republic), which is no less famous for its rich history, attractions and hospitality. Right before the opening of the tourist season, we decided to present the 15 most popular tourist destinations in Armenia and Karabakh.

“YEREVAN TRAVEL” became the guarantee that the journey would be a wonderful and an unforgettable one. Sunny morning and a soft warm breeze. It seems that everything is going to be very predictable, but from the first seconds you find yourself in another world, which absorbs you and makes you forget about everything and just be happy, smile, enjoy and admire. The mountains rise before your eyes and take your breath away by their history, magnificence, power and beauty. Lake Sevan, huge and fascinating, brings perfect calmness, confidence and serenity with its blue color. The roads that are curving and unpredictable, stretching into the distance beyond the horizon - are breathtaking. The capital and roadside villages are magical, good-natured and surprisingly comfortable and have so many secrets and mysteries. absorbed a lot of joy as well as tragedies. Yet it is truly great, beautiful and mysterious! I’d like to say the warmest words about “YEREVAN TRAVEL”, for this wonderful fairy tale that lasted for a week, and all those who were with us almost every second of our journey, revealing previously unknown secrets and facts, helped, supported, advised, guarded, surprised, gave us joy, smiles and laughter. Special thanks to David - the bright, fun-loving, kind person, who skillfully checked if everybody was on the bus and perfectly managed to do several things simultaneously. Thanks to Gaspar, the intelligent, calm, supporting person who, like a good storyteller was telling us about Armenia, about every corner of it. Finally, thanks to Rafik, a true master of his work, a man who safely and gracefully led the bus by mountain drives. Thank you all guys, you make people happier!

The Artist
hen you first see the works of Sevada GrigoW ryan, you freeze and are afraid to breathe, so as
not to scare away that reverent state. However, it’s a strange thing, you fall into the same state after the second, the third and each subsequent times of seeing them. What is the secret?! Everything is simple. Despite his considerable age, Sevada looks at the world through the eyes of an innocent child, when the world seems cleaner, brighter and more magical. The art of Sevada Grigoryan is striking in its imagery and lightness. It would seem that all the characters are invented and are heroes of fairy tales, but no, the artist is strongly connected to the Armenian folklore and lifestyle. Here is a traditional Armenian wedding. And here is the traditional Armenian table with dishes. And here he has depicted the cooking of the traditional Armenian bread - lavash. The artist praises the good, light, love, wisdom, peace, bringing us back to the once lost world in which everything great was possible: the mother would wait for his son, the tree
planted by a father in the rocky soil would grow, the princess and the prince would meet and surely beautiful spring full of colors would come. “One of the central themes of my paintings is the family”, says Sevada. “I compare the harmony in the family with the harmony of nature. Whether it's a hard-working father, a loving mother or a happy child – I try to perpetuate this piece of perfection. I believe that beauty along with faith will save the world. ”

Art
No matter where Sevada Grigoryan has worked, he has always felt its attraction to his native land, to the roots, and he so naturally and innately brings the world and the centuries-old Armenian culture together with harmony that is inherent in nature only. The creator is drawn by the earthly ties of his homeland, and that’s why his brush works so easily. He is honest with himGATE 112
self, he does not create for the sake of time and fashion, that’s why he is so naturally loved for his purity, honesty and devotion to his roots. The artist with pride and dignity presents national elements and motifs to the world. “My paintings are the reflection of my inner world, of what happens around me”, says the artist. “For many years, various memories, events and experiences have been going through a crystallization process within me and eventually moved to a different state of being: they turned into my works.” In his paintings, the artist uses a mixture of different paints, including acrylics, oil paints, gouache and ink. Detailing is an important part of his style, that according to Sevada, allows him to convey his love and care to the painting. Like the oak easily rises to the sky, with deep and strong roots so is the art Sevada Grigoryan – easy and strong. And in the artist there is something resembling the foundations of human history, such a bright part of an ancestor, or perhaps something deeper - from antediluvian creatures of the earth.
