Happy New Year! 2019 is already starting off on the right foot as The Army and Navy Club was once again voted one of the top 50 city clubs in the country. And what's more is we moved up ten spots in just two short years! This is a testament not only to the hardworking and dedicated staff, but also to the loyalty of you, our members, without which this wouldn't be possible. One of the big projects in the new year is going to be upgrading the final few hotel bathrooms, which will start this month. This project has been on-going since 2015, renovating only 5 or 6 bathrooms at a time during the Club's slower seasons. There will be many other new and exciting projects happening throughout the Club this year, but more on those at a later date. In the meantime, I encourage you to stay up-to-date with all of the new programming we have in store for you this year. Be on the lookout for more afternoon teas, wine and liquor tastings, and more Clubs within the Club. One of the most encouraging aspects of the Clubs within the Club (CWC) concept is that ANC members don't necessarily have to be in DC to participate as your fellow Club members are starting their own regional groups, such as the ANC Members of New England. We hope that their success will inspire other members to start their own CWC in other parts of the country, and around the world. Although I say it at the start of every New Year, 2019 is going to be the best one yet and I look forward to sharing it with all of you.

A LETTER FROM THE
GENERAL MANAGER & COO John L. Warnack, CCM, CFBE jwarnack@armynavyclub.org
BOA R D OF G OV E R NOR S MG Daniel V. Wright, USA (Ret.) President Col James A. Bracken, USMC (Ret.) Vice President & Historian CAPT James H. Czerwonky, USN (Ret.) Secretary
We have much to be grateful for, particularly as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy Invasion this June 6th, 2019. In addition to the many commemorations, there will no doubt be numerous stories in the media about D-Day.
COL Holly O’Grady Cook, USA (Ret.) Treasurer
Here at The Army Navy Club, we have our own D-Day "story." One of our Golden Knight members, Albert Small, is a 93-year-old World War II veteran who felt it was so important to pass on to future generations the lessons of sacrifice for freedom from World War II, and especially D-Day, that he wanted to create a program to do just that.
COL Marc L. Warren, USA (Ret.) House Committee, Chairman
Working with another Army and Navy Club member, his good friend Robert (Bob) Perry, who himself is a Vietnam veteran and whose uncle fought in World War II, the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute was created, and is about to begin its ninth year. It is an annual program for high school teachers and students to study the lessons of D-Day, culminating in a trip in June of each year to Washington, DC, and Normandy, France. Mr. Small has endowed this program so that it can be held in perpetuity, and continue to reach and teach successive generations about these important lessons. Below is a portrait of Mr. Small holding a copy of Ike's D-Day letter to the troops. A copy of this letter, along with other Normandy memorabilia, are gifts to the ANC from Mr. Small and are on permanent display in our Eagle Grill.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT // MEMBERSHIP
Member Spotlight SECOND LIEUTENANT RYAN SWEENEY, USAR
A NEWLY COMMISSIONED OFFICER
S
econd Lieutenant Ryan Sweeney, USAR joined our Club in August 2017 under our membership category of "Newly Commissioned Officers."
This category of membership has been a mainstay of our Club from the very beginning of our existence. Its purpose is to introduce young officers to the Club early in their careers while incentivizing them with reduced initiation fees and dues for the first five years of their membership. We join approximately 60 Newly Commissioned Officers each year. For an example of the program's effectiveness we can look to our over 100 current Knights of the Golden Circle (members who have been paying monthly dues for 50 years). More than 60 of our current Knights joined the Club as Newly Commissioned Officers. Lieutenant Sweeney, from Westchester, New York, was commissioned through the Army ROTC. A 2017 graduate of George Washington University, he remained at his university for an additional year and earned a master's degree in Public Administration. He serves as an active reservist with the Army's 330th Strategic Intelligence Group at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
From left to right: Dianne Sweeney (mother); LT Sweeney (center); and Carol Horton (aunt).
Lieutenant Sweeney held Membership in the New York Athletic Club in New York City and first visited us using his reciprocal club privileges. He opted to become a member of our Club when it became obvious he would be staying in the DC area. Throughout his college summers, he interned with a Westchester County legislator, at the Department of Justice, and with the House Financial Services Committee. He is currently employed as a Program Manager in the technology policy division of the Bank Policy Institute. Living in Foggy Bottom he enjoys walking to work and to the Club. Ryan is delighted with his year plus of Club experience. It has provided him a fine place to entertain, meet others who share his interest in running (a marathon runner with 3:23:54 in his latest Marine Marathon), and golf. He also frequently attends our evening programs. We are pleased to have him as an active and involved member. We consider newly joined officers the life's blood of the Club's future. ◄

During Fiscal Year 2018, The Army and Navy Club welcomed over 600 new members to the Club and experienced a net membership growth of over 4%. This is the highest membership growth the Club has seen in over five years. This is the direct result of the significant efforts being made by our Board of Governors and Committees to enhance the member experience through their commitment to improved facilities, new programming and events, fine dining and focusing on the strategic goals of the Club. As member engagement continues to increase, we recognize that our most powerful marketing tool is the word-of-mouth recommendations and endorsements shared by you, our members. We thank you for your tremendous efforts sharing the Club with your friends, family and colleagues. As a private Club, due to our 501(c)7 status, our ability to advertise and market is restricted and limited. We cannot utilize traditional marketing tools such as paid advertisements or direct solicitation. However, we continue to seek out creative and new ways to showcase the Club and strengthen our brand.
We are thankful for our partnership with the Military Officer's Association of America (MOAA). MOAA has continually promoted membership at the Club. The ANC was recently spotlighted in their September 2018 issue of their magazine. This partnership allows for a large number of military officers to not only learn more about the Club, but it also results in numerous membership inquiries and applications. We look forward to our continued partnership with MOAA. Our interaction with prospective and new members provides great insight into what attracts them to the Club. The Club's rich history, strong camaraderie and core values are at the top of the list. These intangibles have been preserved through time by each of you and the members that came before you. Your pride in your Club is the greatest asset we have in ensuring continued membership growth in the future. Please let us know if you ever have any questions or need assistance showcasing the Club. We are here to support you and will gladly assist where we can. We look forward to what 2019 will bring for the Club! ◄
As interest in membership increases and we welcome a higher volume of new members, we have decided to create a Prospective Member Mixer in addition to our New Member Orientations. Prospective Member Mixer: A special evening for members to showcase and share the Club with prospective members. This event includes a complimentary reception with wine, beer, cheese and light hors d’oeuvres. Members of the Membership Committee and staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide guided tours. Mark your calendar for the next Prospective Member Mixer on Wednesday, February 6. New Member Orientation: Starting this year, we will introduce a new interactive format for our New Member Orientations. This event includes a complimentary reception with wine, beer, cheese and light hors d’oeuvres. New Members will be able to interact with Members of the Membership Committee as well as key staff to get their questions answered on topics such as dining, catering, special events, reciprocal clubs, and more! This is a great way to learn more about your Club. The first New Member Orientation of 2019 is on Tuesday, January 22. 6 | THE DISPATCH

HOUSE RULE UPDATE: FOOD & BEVERAGE
Silhouettes—cut paper profiles—were a hugely popular and democratic form of portraiture in the 19th century, offering virtually instantaneous likenesses of everyone from presidents to those who were enslaved. The exhibition Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Now explores this relatively unstudied art form by examining its rich historical roots and considering its forceful contemporary presence. For more information on the exhibit, please visit: npg.si.edu. After spending the day at the National Portrait Gallery stay overnight at the handsome hotel rooms at your Club. Stay at the ANC! Make a hotel room reservation by calling 202-628-8400.

BOOK FORUM "The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left the Right" By Max Boot Tuesday, February 5, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person The Corrosion of Conservatism presents an urgent defense of American democracy. No longer a Republican, but also not a Democrat, Boot here records his ideological journey from a "movement" conservative to a man without a party, beginning with his political coming-of-age as a young émigré from the Soviet Union, enthralled with the National Review and the conservative intellectual tradition of Russell Kirk and F. A. Hayek.
The New Rules of War delivers a highly provocative, even controversial, exploration of modern warfare and what we must do to win in the future. War is timeless. Some things change—weapons, tactics, technology, leadership, objectives—but the propensity for humans to do battle does not. In this thorough, insightful analysis, Sean McFate carefully constructs ten rules for the future of military engagement, explaining how to fight and win in an age of entropy and a global system very different from the past: one where corporations, mercenaries, and rogue states have more power and ‘nation states’ have less.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH "Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography: The Faith of a Boundary-Breaking Hero" By Michael G. Long Tuesday, February 19, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person Jackie Robinson believed in a God who sides with the oppressed and who calls us to see one another as sisters and brothers. This faith was a powerful but quiet engine that drove and sustained him as he shattered racial barriers on and beyond the baseball diamond. Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography explores the faith that, Robinson said, carried him through the torment and abuse he suffered for integrating the major leagues and drove him to get involved in the civil rights movement. Marked by sacrifice and service, inclusiveness and hope, Robinson's faith shaped not only his character but also baseball and America itself.

ebruary 15 will kick off our 2019 Library Trust events. The Library Trust, together with the Special Events Committee, will host a unique, unprecedented event at the Club. We will sponsor simultaneously a book forum and an art exhibit with one theme—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Charles W. "Chuck" Newhall III, rifle platoon leader in the A Shau Valley in 1968 and author of Fearful Odds, A Memoir of Vietnam and Its Aftermath (book cover below) will discuss the lifelong effects of his PTSD. New from the Library Trust Chairman York-based artist Susan J. Barron will present a selection of the works from her new series Depicting the Invisible: A Portrait Series of Veterans Suffering from PTSD.
A LETTER
The striking, large scale mixed-media series is composed of fourteen 6' x 6' portraits of Veterans living with PTSD. A combination of photography, paint, and text, the portraits are layered with veterans' stories in their own words. The elegance of the images contrasts with the brutality of the narratives depicted. As they stare unflinchingly at the camera, the subjects are both vulnerable and powerful. Barron's intent is not to deify the veterans but to illuminate their experiences and to initiate a conversation around the sensitive issue of PTSD. She notes that "…the invisible wounds of war are just as devastating as the visible ones." Ms. Barron's portrait series has been on exhibition at the HG Contemporary Gallery in New York City. After her exhibition at The Army and Navy Club on Farragut Square, she will take the exhibit to Miami, Florida and then on to San Diego, California. She is a nationally recognized and internationally collected artist who graduated from Boston University and studied art at both the Art Institute of San Francisco and Yale School for the Arts. We are fortunate that we can schedule her exhibit at the same time that Chuck Newhall is available to discuss his compelling account not only of Vietnam combat with the storied 101st Airborne Division after commissioning through ROTC at the University of Pennsylvania, but also his transition upon returning from Vietnam to Harvard Business School, the private sector, extraordinary success as an entrepreneur, and ultimately as a venture capitalist. 1830 hours is the time; Friday, 15 February is the date; The Army and Navy Club is the place. act World War I presentation during the Centennial Year of the end of "The Great War." Our Collections website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub. org, continues to grow and improve. Our webmaster has introduced new search capabilities, especially in connection with the additional archives of Time magazine covers depicting Club members and the 8 volume Roy Boehm Archive. The Members in History collection comprises each of the 102 covers of Time Magazine featuring a member of The Army and Navy Club since the magazine was founded in 1923. Our first cover is the July 9, 1923 portrait of General Mason M. Patrick, for whom Patrick Air Force Base in Florida is named. We will add more special collections to our website during 2019. We continue to document, collate, and prepare for website inclusion the extensive 19th century stereograph collection mentioned in earlier articles. We believe that our collection of stereographs is larger and more comprehensive than a similar collection at the National Archives. We will also digitize and include on the website the growing collection of donor-provided lead models of troops and equipment, on display in the B-1 display case through the care and attention of House Committee member Tom Fahres and now another collection the Library display cabinet through the care and attention of the donor. Museums and artists continue to seek further information about our collection. Many of you responded to our request for exhibit and event ideas. Thanks for that; we’re working to implement your suggestions. This interest reinforces the value of the Library Trust's digitization project and online collection. It enables us to become part of a larger community of museums, military institutions, libraries, and art collections nationwide. Be sure to visit the special exhibits in the Iwo Jima/ John Paul Jones Room (World War I) and the Eagle Grill (ANC Collection Prints and Drawings). We continue to seek donors for two significant naming opportunities for sponsors who want to help the Trust attain an endowment corpus sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. ◄
