This February, The Army and Navy Club celebrates Black History Month with a book forum chosen by the Special Events Committee about an American icon. Jackie Robinson is best known for integrating the game of baseball, but few know how from that experience he was driven to get involved in the civil rights movement. Michael G. Long, co-author of Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography, will be at the Club on Tuesday, February 19 to speak about how Robinson not only helped shape America's pastime, but also America.

Additionally, there is the lunch and lecture series scheduled for February 23 featuring Sarah Verardo, a national advocate for Veterans and Caregivers as well as Caregiver for her husband, Mike, one of the most severely wounded Veterans from the Global War on Terror. Sarah will speak on her recent book, Hero at Home, which honors the ones who came home, and embraces the loving memory of the ones who did not. An important read for those wishing to embrace the Wounded Heroes in their community and better understand that for these Heroes, the fight doesn't end when they return home. Then on March 2, we celebrate Women's History Month with our Third Annual Luncheon Celebrating Women's Roles in the Success of the Military with keynote speaker former Senator Elizabeth Dole. Senator Dole has a long list of achievements from being the first female Secretary of Transportation and Secretary Labor, which also made her the first female to hold two different cabinet positions in two administrations, to her latest endeavor, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which works to empower and support our military caregivers. This will no doubt be a sell-out event and I encourage you to make your reservations early.

At the end of 2018 I mentioned that the New Year would bring new and different events to the Club, and the first such event will be on Saturday, March 23 with a Guest Chef Dinner. The guest chef for the evening will be the winner the Food Network show Chopped, Frida Karani. Chef Karani is a culinary specialist in the U.S. Navy and is the current Executive Chef at the Pentagon. She is already designing her menu for the evening, which our own Chef Deloach, and his staff, is looking forward to executing. Again, the staff expects this to be another sell-out so make your reservations soon.

CAPT James H. Czerwonky, USN (Ret.) Secretary COL Holly O’Grady Cook, USA (Ret.) Treasurer
The Army and Navy Club's Founders, in 1885, created this unique organization to encourage camaraderie and commemorate the military's heritage while providing a space where members can develop professionally, build relationships and celebrate their shared experiences derived from serving our Nation. The Club hosts over 100 Club Events each year and are a combined effort of the Special Events Committee and Club Staff to honor the founders' mission for the Club. Book forums have long been the lifeblood of the special events program at the Club. The 2019 series launched in January with a moderated book forum with Chris Scalia, son of late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and Ed Whelan, both editors of the book "Scalia Speaks", which 90+ Club members attended. The Special Events Committee arranges 20-30 book forums and lunchtime lectures annually, encompassing a wide variety of topics and appealing to all demographics of our Club's membership. For those looking for something a little more casual and social, the ANC calendar is full of events for members to make new connections. Whether attending a Professional Member Networking event, a Scotch or Whiskey tasting, or a meeting of one of the 5 Clubs Within the Club, there are numerous opportunities to experience the Club and meet fellow Club members. Currently, the Special Events Committee and Staff are working diligently to coordinate the 2019 annual member events such as the Ladies Fashion Luncheon in May, the Military Heritage Mess Night in June; and the premier Club event, the Salute to the Armed Forces Gala in November. We also have some exciting new events on the calendar this year including Afternoon Tea; a Guest Chef Dinner; the Rooftop Happy Hour Series, which will begin in May and run through September; and the Dinner & a Show theater offerings at the Kennedy Center. Many of these events sell out quickly, so we encourage all members to stay up to date by reading the monthly Dispatch magazine as well as logging in to the Club's website, www.armynavyclub.org. We look forward to seeing you all at the Club throughout 2019!

Member Spotlight COL HERMAN E. BULLS, U.S. ARMY RESERVE (RET.) • WRITTEN BY JIM MCTAGUE, CLUB MEMBER •
C
olonel Herman E. Bulls, U.S. Army Reserve (Ret.), one of the country's leading real estate professionals, is a great American success story. He rose from humble beginnings to the top of the corporate world. Col Bulls is Vice Chairman, Americas, for JLL, the real estate services giant that boasts $8 billion in annual revenues, with over 85,000 employees located in 75 countries. The 1978 West Point engineering graduate was the youngest of seven children raised in Florence, Alabama by a widowed mother who instilled her brood with ambition, drive, and a deep appreciation of education. While working as a cook, domestic, and insurance saleswoman to support her family, Col Bulls' mother earned her GED and then went on to community college to become a licensed practical nurse. "Six of us graduated from college," says Col Bulls. Between them, they have 11 degrees, including the MBA Col Bulls received from Harvard in 1985. "It was never a matter of 'if' I would go to college, but 'where' I would go." Col Bulls was student council president at Coffee High School and quarterback of its Yellow Jackets football team, in a school that was 88% white, a testament to his warm, gracious personality. He knew of racial discrimination, but was not obsessed with it. He's a change agent. Col Bulls says that when he looks at a situation, "I see what can be, not what is." West Point recruiters recognized his talents and reached out to him. He held the Academy in high regard and accepted what he saw as a challenge to succeed in a rigorous academic and physical setting. Col Bulls believes he inherited his entrepreneurial side from his father, who died in a highway accident four months before he was born. His father worked as a janitor at the Tennessee Valley Authority and farmed two parcels, totaling 125 acres, in his spare time. The family still owns the property. While he was growing up, most of the family's food came from that farm, he says. After West Point, Col Bulls spent eleven and a half years in the regular Army, including a stint as a finance professor at the Academy after earning his MBA. He left the regular Army with
captain's bars. He spent the next eighteen and a half years in the Reserves, retiring as a colonel. He has three sons, all college graduates, including two West Pointers, one who is still on active duty and recently returned from his third deployment. His wife, Iris, is also a retired Army Reserve LTC. At JLL, he formed a unit that helped the Army and the Air Force privatize about $10 billion worth of base housing to stretch dollars during budget sequestration. Col Bulls, who has been a Club member since 1990, brings clients to lunch about twice each month. "It's a fantastic place, particularly when I have people from outof-town. It's very welcoming. The staff recognizes you. So, it is very comfortable to use for business." His favorite club memory is of his surprise 50th birthday. Col Bulls is a huge fan of Duke basketball because Coach Mike Krzyzewski was the coach at West Point when he was a cadet. "Believe it or not, I was the voice of Army sports, so I did play-by-play for basketball and football and traveled with Coach K and the team." Duke had a big game against UNC on the Saturday night that his wife arranged for a dinner with the CEO of JLL and his wife. Col Bulls was determined to cut the dinner short so he could at least watch the second half of the game. But his boss, who met them at the Daiquiri Lounge, dragged his feet, insisting on a tour of the meeting rooms, much to Col Bulls' consternation. When Col Bulls took his boss into the John Paul Jones/Iwo Jima room and flipped on the lights, he found 100 guests waiting for him. "My wife had pulled this together and there were people from my high school, West Point, and Harvard. I had started two companies, so my partners from those two companies were there as well as colleagues from JLL." This was one Duke game that Col Bulls did not mind missing. ◄

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S ROLES IN THE SUCCESS OF THE MILITARY Keynote Speaker: Elizabeth Dole
Founder of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Saturday, March 2, 2019 Noon to 3 pm | Main Dining Room $40++ per person (plus 15% gratuity and 10% tax) Includes reception and 3-course lunch. Dress code is business attire. This year during Women’s History Month, The Army and Navy Club will host our Third Annual Luncheon Celebrating Women's Roles in the Success of the Military. The keynote speaker for this year's event is former Senator Elizabeth Dole, the first woman Senator from North Carolina and founder of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is the preeminent organization empowering, supporting, and honoring our nation’s 5.5 million military caregivers; the spouses, parents, family members, and friends who care for America's wounded, ill, or injured veterans. This luncheon will include a 30-minute reception on the second floor followed by a 3-course lunch and presentation in the Main Dining Room. Elizabeth Dole launched her career in public service in 1960, working on the Kennedy-Johnson presidential campaign, and subsequently served in the Johnson, Nixon, and Ford administrations. Senator Dole’s list of achievements demonstrates her lifelong commitment to service, made even more impressive by the fact that she was often among the first, if not the first, woman to hold her positions, starting with her appointment to the Federal Trade Commission in 1973. She was later appointed by President Ronald Reagan to become the first female Secretary of Transportation. Because the Coast Guard was part of the Department of Transportation during her service, she has the distinction of being the first woman to head a U.S. military branch. Following this appointment, she served as Secretary of Labor under President George H.W. Bush, becoming the first woman to hold two different Cabinet positions in two different Presidential administrations. For reservations, please call Elizabeth Newcomer at 202-355-0505 or visit the ANC website for online reservations.

LUNCH AND A LECTURE SERIES
"The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left the Right" By Max Boot Tuesday, February 5, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person The Corrosion of Conservatism presents an urgent defense of American democracy. No longer a Republican, but also not a Democrat, Boot here records his ideological journey from a "movement" conservative to a man without a party, beginning with his political coming-of-age as a young émigré from the Soviet Union, enthralled with the National Review and the conservative intellectual tradition of Russell Kirk and F. A. Hayek.
LUNCH AND A LECTURE SERIES "The New Rules of War: Victory in the Age of Durable Disorder" By Sean McFate Friday, February 15, 2019 Registration/Lunch: 12:30 pm Presentation: 1 pm Price: $24++ per person The New Rules of War delivers a highly provocative, even controversial, exploration of modern warfare and what we must do to win in the future. War is timeless. Some things change—weapons, tactics, technology, leadership, objectives—but the propensity for humans to do battle does not. In this thorough, insightful analysis, Sean McFate carefully constructs ten rules for the future of military engagement, explaining how to fight and win in an age of entropy and a global system very different from the past: one where corporations, mercenaries, and rogue states have more power and ‘nation states’ have less.
BOOK FORUM
"Hero at Home" By Sarah Verardo Saturday, February 23, 2019 Registration/Lunch: 12:00 pm Presentation: 12:30 pm Price: $24++ per person Hero at Home was inspired by Sarah Verardo's personal family journey: having three young daughters and a catastrophically wounded Veteran husband. The book honors the ones who came home, and embraces the loving memory of the ones who did not. An important read for those wishing to embrace the Wounded Heroes in their community and better understand that for these Heroes, the fight doesn't end when they return home. The mission continues and is a family affair. Injuries from military service can be both visible and invisible. Hero at Home celebrates the contribution that our Veterans have made, and shines a light on how vital it is to embrace these special families. Please note that this event is family-oriented and members are encouraged to bring their children. The author will perform a special reading for the children.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH "Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography: The Faith of a Boundary-Breaking Hero" By Michael G. Long Tuesday, February 19, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person Jackie Robinson believed in a God who sides with the oppressed and who calls us to see one another as sisters and brothers. This faith was a powerful but quiet engine that drove and sustained him as he shattered racial barriers on and beyond the baseball diamond. Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography explores the faith that, Robinson said, carried him through the torment and abuse he suffered for integrating the major leagues and drove him to get involved in the civil rights movement. Marked by sacrifice and service, inclusiveness and hope, Robinson's faith shaped not only his character but also baseball and America itself.

NAVAL ART PRESENTATION WITH GEOFFREY BEAUMONT GEOFFREY BEAUMONT PRESENTS HIS FATHER'S COLLECTION — ARTHUR BEAUMONT: ART OF THE SEA
Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm $10 per person | John Paul Jones and Iwo Jima Room Written by the artist's youngest son, Geoffrey Beaumont, this fully illustrated book is the definitive study of this important artist. As part of the family, the author drew on the family archives, personal anecdotes, and firsthand knowledge to create an intimate and thorough account for both the man and the artist. About Arthur Beaumont: His classical training as an artist and his fascination with the sea and the vessels which sail upon her led Beaumont into an association with the U.S. Navy which lasted nearly five decades. In 1933 Arthur Beaumont received his commission as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and was appointed as the official artist of the United States Fleet. He served in an official capacity and as a freelance artist for the Navy until his death 45 years later, in 1978. Join us for the worldwide premiere of the "Director's Cut" of BLACK HAWK DOWN: The Untold Story. This 70-minute documentary presents the heroic efforts of the soldiers from the 2nd Battalion 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (2-14). These men demonstrated extraordinary courage, skill, and discipline as they fought their way into a “baited ambush” to rescue the special operations forces pinned down at the crash site of Super Six-One while also attempting a rescue at the crash site of Super Six-Four. Two soldiers from the 2-14 were killed and eighteen wounded in what many have described as the most ferocious urban combat since the Battle for Hue during the Tet Offensive in 1968. Following the screening, attendees will enjoy a wine and cheese reception followed by a panel discussion featuring: Brigadier General Bill David, USA (Ret.), Commander, Task Force 2-14 Lt Colonel Michael Ellerbe, USA (Ret.), S-3, Task Force 2-14 Colonel Lee Van Arsdale, USA (Ret.), Senior Delta Force officer in the battle Colonel Randy Larsen, USAF (Ret.), Director/Executive Producer For reservations, please call Elizabeth Newcomer at 202-355-0505 or visit the ANC website for online reservations. 17 | FEBRUARY 2019
H I S T O R Y VA U LT
BY COL JAMES A. BR ACKEN, USMC (RET.), CLUB VICE PRESIDENT & HISTORIAN
World War I: Battle of the Big Woods ne of the most critical duty stations for 30,000 American soldiers during the First World War was not in the trenches on the European battlefields, but in the forest and lumber mills of the Great Northwest of the United States. Specialty wood (Sitka Spruce), an unusual wood which grew only along the coastal rivers of Northern California, Oregon and Washington, was needed to build airplanes for the French, Brits, Italians and the United States. It quickly became a priority need for the War Department. But it also was a time when the logging business was in turmoil and all workers in the entire lumber industry, demanding better money and working conditions, went on strike on July 1, 1917. Subsequently, the harvesting of Sitka Spruce stopped cold. The War Department turned to Colonel (later Brigadier General) Brice Disque, a Club member since 1913, to resolve this complex, war related production problem. Disque, after study and consultation, briefed his coordinated plan to the Secretary of War. Active duty soldiers would be stationed in the three spruce producing states where they would work the forest and mills, provide security and create logging roads and railroads needed to transport the lumber. In addition to his active duty troops, Disque still needed to convince the disgruntled striking loggers and lumbermen to return to work. His solution was the creation of a new union, the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen (4L), which would pay good wages twice a month and create livable base camps with decent sanitation facilities and nourishing food.
The new plan was approved in Washington, and Disque was quickly provided with funding, military manpower and logistic support. His new command was named the Spruce Production Division (SPD). Disque’s background and experience earmarked him as the right man to meet the Sitka Spruce challenge. He had already garnered a reputation as a skilled labor relations manager when he served in the Philippines after the turn of the century, overseeing the rebuilding of an industrial canal. During World War I more than 100,000 non-military loggers and mill workers joined the 30,000 soldiers working in the Spruce Production Division during the 15 months of its existence. With the end of the war on November 11, 1918 all Sitka Spruce logging came to a roaring stop. Workers were sent home, soldiers were discharged, and equipment and machinery were removed from the logging sites to be prepared for sale. There can be no doubt as to the success of the Spruce Production Division. In a short period of time the highly motivated work force produced 143,008,961 board feet of critically needed high quality, aircraft grade lumber. Promoted to Brigadier General in early 1919, Disque left active service and became a successful businessman serving on several corporate boards and becoming the president of the Anthracite Institute, a large trade association. He also returned to the Army for short periods of active duty, and in World War II he served in the government once again, joining the Solid Fuel Administration. The General passed away at age 80 in 1960. ◄

hanks for the enthusiastic comments regarding the Library Trust website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub. org. We have now enhanced the site's search functions to substantially improve your research capabilities. You may have already visited the full archives of the Members in History Special Collection, featuring each of the 92 covers of Time Magazine since the magazine was founded in 1923 that feature a member of The Army and Navy Club. Many were on the cover multiple times but even so… more than 40 different members from the Librar y Trust Chairman have been depicted on the cover of Time Magazine.
A LETTER
The vision and generosity of former Club President and 2nd generation Golden Knight Admiral John Faigle drove the Members in History project. Major General Joe Lynch was instrumental in the Club's acquisition of additional cover portraits. Perhaps to cap this project we'll succeed in our quest to obtain an original portrait or two from the National Portrait Gallery to exhibit at the Club sometime in the future. You can now also access the eight volume Roy Boehm Archive that was donated to the Library Trust by the Lieutenant Commander Boehm estate at the Special Operations community event several years ago. The event was presided over by Admiral Eric Olson, the thenCommander of US Special Operations Command. You can also see Lieutenant Commander Boehm's sword, presented to the Library Trust the same evening, in a special exhibit near the Washington and Arnold Rooms on the second floor. We appreciate the many positive comments by those who visited the Club through the holidays, especially on New Year’s Day at the annual reception. Your appreciation for the special exhibits in the Iwo Jima/John Paul Jones Room (World War I) and the Eagle Grill (ANC Collection Prints and Drawings) that day justify the extension of the exhibits in those locations. The Library Trust is hosting a unique event in February in collaboration with the Special Events Committee. We will simultaneously sponsor a book forum and an art exhibit, both designed to stimulate thought regarding something of concern to most of us—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Charles W. "Chuck" Newhall III, rifle platoon leader in the A Shau Valley in 1968 and author of Fearful Odds, A Memoir of Vietnam and Its Aftermath will discuss the lifelong effects of his PTSD on his life that has otherwise brimmed with success. Then, New York-based artist Susan J. Barron will present a selection of the works from her new series, Depicting the Invisible: A Portrait Series of Veterans Suffering from PTSD. Ms. Barron's striking, large scale photography
and mixed-media series is composed of fourteen 6' x 6' portraits of Veterans living with PTSD. A combination of photography, paint, and text, the portraits are layered with veterans' stories in their own words. The elegance of the images contrasts with the brutality of the narratives. The subjects, as they look without affect at the camera, are both vulnerable and powerful. Barron's design is to illuminate the subjects' experiences and thereby initiate a conversation about the sensitive issue of PTSD. She notes that "…the invisible wounds of war are just as devastating as the visible ones." Ms. Barron's portrait series has been on exhibition at the HG Contemporary Gallery in New York City. After her exhibition at The Army and Portrait by Susan J. Barron Navy Club on Farragut Square, she will take the exhibit to Miami, Florida and then on to San Diego, California. Barron is a nationally recognized and internationally collected artist who graduated from Boston University and studied art at both the Art Institute of San Francisco and Yale School for the Arts. We are fortunate that we can schedule her exhibit at the same time that Chuck Newhall is available to discuss his compelling account not only of Vietnam combat with the storied 101st Airborne Division after commissioning through ROTC at the University of Pennsylvania, but also his transition upon returning from Vietnam to Harvard Business School, the private sector, extraordinary success as an entrepreneur, and ultimately as a venture capitalist. The joint event is on Friday evening, 15 February at 1800 hours. Please RSVP to Elizabeth Newcomer at enewcomer@armynavyclub.org or 202-355-0505. See you at the Club. Museums and artists continue to seek further information about our collection. Thanks to many of you for responding to our request for exhibit and event ideas. We are working to implement your suggestions. This interest reinforces the value of the Library Trust's digitization project and online collection and enables us to become part of a larger community of museums, military institutions, libraries, and art collections nationwide. We continue to seek donors for two significant naming opportunities for sponsors who want to help the Trust attain an endowment corpus sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. ◄
