This month we recognize women's history by celebrating the contributions and sacrifices they have made, which have made our military so successful. Today women can serve alongside men on the battlefront, but it wasn't so long ago that they weren't able to serve at all, but nonetheless, they made undeniable, positive impacts in times of war and peace. Three years ago, the Club hosted its first annual luncheon to shine light on the women who have served in the military and the women who have supported the military. This year, on Saturday March 2, the keynote speaker for the Third Annual Celebrating Women's Roles in the Success of the Military Luncheon is none other than Senator Elizabeth Dole. The Club is honored to have this great American speak about her experience serving our nation working for two presidents, and how today she supports our veterans and their caretakers with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.

If you haven't yet made your reservations for the Guest Chef Dinner with Frida Karani on Saturday, March 23, I encourage you to do so now as this event is expected to sell out! I also want to note another event later this month. While it is sold-out already, the Club is privileged to be hosting the worldwide premier of the director's cut of the documentary Blackhawk Down: The Untold Story. The fact that the Club was chosen for this very special event goes to show what an important and historical venue we truly are, which is all thanks to our remarkable membership. Back in February, our Special Events Committee and Library Trust Committee simultaneously sponsored an art presentation and book forum to discuss the important and relevant topic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The artwork from the event will be exhibited on the 2nd floor and in the B-2 level squash court until April 4. I hope you have the opportunity to come and see it before it’s gone. As the spring thaw begins, and we all come out of hibernation, I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S ROLES IN THE SUCCESS OF THE MILITARY Keynote Speaker: Senator Elizabeth Dole Founder of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation

SOLD OUT! Saturday, March 2, 2019 Noon to 3 pm | Main Dining Room $40++ per person (plus 15% gratuity and 10% tax) Includes reception and 3-course lunch. Dress code is business attire. This year during Women’s History Month, The Army and Navy Club will host our Third Annual Luncheon Celebrating Women's Roles in the Success of the Military. The keynote speaker for this year's event is former Senator Elizabeth Dole, the first woman Senator from North Carolina and founder of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is the preeminent organization empowering, supporting, and honoring our nation’s 5.5 million military caregivers; the spouses, parents, family members, and friends who care for America's wounded, ill, or injured veterans. This luncheon will include a 40-minute reception on the second floor followed by a 3-course menu and presentation in the Main Dining Room. Elizabeth Dole launched her career in public service in 1960, working on the Kennedy-Johnson presidential campaign, and subsequently served in the Johnson, Nixon, and Ford administrations. Senator Dole’s list of achievements demonstrates her lifelong commitment to service, made even more impressive by the fact that she was often among the first, if not the first, woman to hold her positions, starting with her appointment to the Federal Trade Commission in 1973. She was later appointed by President Ronald Reagan to become the first female Secretary of Transportation. Because the Coast Guard was part of the Department of Transportation during her service, she has the distinction of being the first woman to head a U.S. military branch. Following this appointment, she served as Secretary of Labor under President George H.W. Bush, becoming the first woman to hold two different Cabinet positions in two different Presidential administrations. Please contact Elizabeth Newcomer at 202-355-0505 or enewcomer@armynavyclub.org to be added to the waitlist.

"The Saboteur: The Aristocrat Who Became France's Most Daring Anti-Nazi Commando" By Paul Kix Tuesday, March 26, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person The Saboteur recounts Robert de La Rochefoucauld’s enthralling adventures, from jumping from a moving truck on his way to his execution, to stealing Nazi limos, to dressing up in a nun’s habit—one of his many disguises and impersonations. Whatever the mission, whatever the dire circumstance, La Rochefoucauld acquitted himself nobly, with the straight-back aplomb of a man of aristocratic breeding: James Bond before Ian Fleming conjured him. More than just a fast-paced, true thriller, The Saboteur is also a deep dive into an endlessly fascinating historical moment, telling the untold story of a network of commandos that battled evil, bravely worked to change the course of history, and inspired the creation of America’s own Central Intelligence Agency.

LUNCH AND A LECTURE SERIES "Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War" By Paul Scharre Friday, March 22, 2019 Registration/Lunch: 12:30 pm Presentation: 1 pm Price: $24++ per person This lunch series will feature author Paul Scharre discussing his book Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War. Paul Scharre is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security.

BOOK FORUM "Never in Finer Company: The Men of the Great War's Lost Battalion" By Edward G. Lengel Tuesday, April 2, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person Never in Finer Company tells the stories of four men whose lives were forever changed by the Battle at Argonne Forest: Major Charles Whittlesey, a lawyer dedicated to serving his men at any cost; Captain George McMurtry, a New York stockbroker who becomes a tower of strength under fire; Corporal Alvin York, a country farmer whose famous exploits help rescue his beleaguered comrades; and Damon Runyon, an intrepid newspaper man who interviews the survivors and weaves their experiences into the American epic. Emerging from the patriotic frenzy that sent young men "over there," each of these four men trod a unique path to the October days that engulfed them—and continued to haunt them as they struggled to find peace.

"Oceans Ventured: Winning the Cold War at Sea" By John F. Lehman Tuesday, April 23, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm Speaker: 7 pm Price: $10 per person When Ronald Reagan took office in January 1981, the United States and NATO were losing the Cold War. The USSR had superiority in conventional weapons and manpower in Europe, and had embarked on a massive program to gain naval preeminence. But Reagan already had a plan to end the Cold War without armed conflict. Reagan led a bipartisan Congress to restore American command of the seas by building the Navy back to six hundred major ships and fifteen aircraft carriers. He adopted a bold new strategy to deploy the growing fleet to northern waters, around the periphery of the Soviet Union, and demonstrate that the NATO fleet could sink Soviet submarines, defeat Soviet bomber and missile forces, and strike aggressively deep into the Soviet homeland if the USSR attacked NATO in Central Europe. New technology in radars, sensors, and electronic warfare made ghosts of American submarines and surface fleets. The United States proved that it could effectively operate carriers and aircraft in the ice and storms of Arctic waters, which no other navy had attempted. The Soviets, suffocated by this naval strategy, were forced to bankrupt their economy trying to keep pace. Shortly thereafter the Berlin Wall fell, and the USSR disbanded. In Oceans Ventured, John Lehman reveals for the first time the untold story of the naval operations that played a major role in winning the Cold War.

H I S T O R Y VA U LT

BY COL JAMES A. BR ACKEN, USMC (RET.), CLUB VICE PRESIDENT & HISTORIAN

MAJOR GENER AL GEORGE F. ELLIOTT, USMC COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS (1903-1910)

O

ur Club President in 1906 had a lot going for him. He was President of The Army and Navy Club while simultaneously serving as Commandant of the Marine Corps. He also enjoyed a reputation as a thick-skinned, relentless fighter both in war (Spanish American) and peace. Of note, is that in addition to General Elliott, two other Marine Corps Commandants have served as our Club President. Major General John A. Lejeune in 1929 and General Clifton B. Cates in 1951. Unlike General Elliott, both served immediately following their retirement from the Corps. Our U.S. Army members will joyfully note that Elliott was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy in 1868 and, two years later, was honorably discharged after being found deficient in mathematics and French. The following October he was appointed a second lieutenant in the Marines. General Elliot had an admirable record as our Club President, presiding in a time soon after the Spanish American War and Filipino Insurrection, when many of our military were returning to the Washington, DC area. His tour as Commandant was not without challenges. Two months after being appointed Commandant he led a Provisional Brigade to the Isthmus of Panama when that country declared its independence from Colombia. This was the only time in the 20th century that the Commandant commanded an expeditionary force in the field. His next set of challenges was even more formidable. The Navy and the Marine Corps were at odds as to the mission of

the Corps. In 1908, in what appeared to be retaliation, and more than a bit of shock to the Corps’ leadership, President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the removal of all Marines from Naval capital ships (Executive Order 969). That same year the Marine Corps also faced an attempt by President Roosevelt to incorporate the Marine Corps into the Army. Fortunately for General Elliott and his Corps, the Congress foiled both initiatives. President Roosevelt's Military aide, Major Archibald Butt, USA, recorded the President's feelings in his dairy (published 20 years after the Major's death) about General Elliott's Marine Corps: "I do not hesitate to say that their downfall is due largely to themselves. They have augmented to themselves such importance, and their influence, which has been gained by pandering to every political influence, has given them such an abnormal position for the size of their Corps that they simply have invited their own destruction. I do not hesitate to say that they should be absorbed into the Army and no vestige of their organization should be allowed to remain. They cannot get along with the Navy, and as a separate command with the Army, the conditions would be intolerable." In many ways, the role of the President of our Club and the Commandant of the Marine Corps, as General Elliot well knew, had similarities. The life's blood of both was, and still is today, their people. General Elliott assumed the task of growing both organizations and achieved success in doing so. The General was placed on the retirement list in November 1910, and he remained in Washington, DC until his death in 1931. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. At his funeral, a contingent from both the Club and the Corps paid homage to him and his leadership. ◄

LIBR ARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE The Army and Navy Club Library Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity. Its IRS-approved charter sets forth the following responsibilities: to collect, restore, and display military-themed artworks and books for the edification and pleasure of its members and to enrich public understanding of the numerous books, historical treasures, and artifacts in its possession.

J

ust two weeks ago the Library Trust hosted its first ever roundtable discussion between an author and artist, both of whose works are currently featured at the Club. The event, in collaboration with the Special Events Committee, was part of the opening for our latest exhibition of artist Susan J. Barron, titled Depicting the Invisible: A Portrait Series of Veterans Suffering from PTSD. By now, many of you have surely seen the exhibition on the first and second floor parades. The evening also functioned as a book forum for one of our library’s latest acquisitions, Fearful Odds: A Memoir of Vietnam and its Aftermath, by Charles "Chuck" Newhall III.

A LETTER

Susan and Chuck joined me on stage to discuss Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), the central theme that unites their respective works. The powerful discussion centered around the f r om t he L ibr a r y Tr u st C ha i r ma n lifelong effects of PTSD on our country's war veterans. Chuck's recounting of his fifty-year struggle with the effects of this psychological injury was moving, compelling, and spellbinding. Having spent the better part of the past two years working with veterans on her portrait series, Susan's insights into the subject were also valuable, compassionate, and educative. Susan's striking, large-scale photography and mixed-media portraits include her most recent portrait—of Chuck Newhall himself. That evening was the debut for Chuck’s portrait, which caused a rush of emotions among observers. Susan's portraits are displayed on both the first and second floor parades as well as in the John Paul Jones/Iwo Jima Room. Significantly for members and their guests, the exhibit will remain in place until 4 April, when some of the portraits may be moved to our new occasional and temporary exhibit space, the B-2 squash court. Using the squash court for temporary artwork installations is the latest undertaking in our ongoing efforts to provide more and better opportunities for artwork at the Club. We are interested to see how members, especially our squash aficionados, respond to this setting.

The Club squash court was not built to the official international court standard, but as a "Hardball singles" court there remains member interest in its use. We respect that interest, but we closed the court for a few months at a time to support special projects with success, like the photography of our art collection (the fruits of which are now available on online for all). We anticipate occasional 2-4 week exhibits in the squash court because its walls and lighting provide an appropriate setting. If you are a squash player who uses the court, or a member who has been enjoying our art exhibitions, please let us know what you think about this proposed occasional use. We may have an opportunity for a second joint event later this year. Many of you may recall David Richardson, the retired Marine Corps officer and artist who exhibited his artwork in the John Paul Jones/Iwo Jima Room in spring 2017. David has written a novel, a fictionalized account of his 2004 tour in Afghanistan, titled "War Story." It will be published by Post Hill Press and distributed by Simon and Schuster later this year, when perhaps we will host a book forum with him, or a joint event with select paintings of his that reflect on his tour of duty. We look forward to seeing how David’s writing compares to his art. ☺ Thanks for your enthusiastic comments regarding the Library Trust website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org. We are working to archive our collection of well over 1,000 historic Civil War-era stereographs, donated to us in 1985 by Reginald W. Okie. These remarkable

artifacts have not previously been readily available to our members because of their delicate condition, as well as the complications inherent in displaying them. We will have the first batch uploaded to our website by next month, on our Special Collections page. To visit our Special Collections, visit Collections. ArmyNavyClub.org. Move your computer mouse over the "Search the Collections" tab, then select "Special Collections" from the drop-down menu. You can find there the Roy Boehm archive and the Members in History (Time Magazine Covers) special collections. During this next phase of our ongoing digitization efforts, we will endeavor to have the stereographs and additional special collections, like the antique lead soldier collections donated and cared for by three different Club members, available online. Museums and artists continue to seek further information about our collection. Thanks to many of you for responding to our request for exhibit and event ideas. We are working to implement your suggestions. This interest reinforces the value of the Library Trust's digitization project and online collection and enables us to become part of a larger community of museums, military institutions, libraries, and art collections nationwide. We continue to seek donors for two significant naming opportunities for sponsors who want to help the Trust attain an endowment corpus sufficient to support the Library Trust in perpetuity. ◄

The Library Trust Collections Website, Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org, draws new interest on a daily basis. Members and non-members alike enjoy the archival advantages and high quality photographs throughout the website. 19 | MARCH 2019

NAVAL ART PRESENTATION WITH GEOFFREY BEAUMONT GEOFFREY BEAUMONT PRESENTS HIS FATHER'S COLLECTION — ARTHUR BEAUMONT: ART OF THE SEA

Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Reception: 6:30 pm | Speaker: 7 pm $10 per person | John Paul Jones and Iwo Jima Room Written by the artist's youngest son, Geoffrey Beaumont, this fully illustrated book is the definitive study of this important artist. As part of the family, the author drew on the family archives, personal anecdotes, and firsthand knowledge to create an intimate and thorough account for both the man and the artist. About Arthur Beaumont: His classical training as an artist and his fascination with the sea and the vessels which sail upon her led Beaumont into an association with the U.S. Navy which lasted nearly five decades. In 1933 Arthur Beaumont received his commission as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and was appointed as the official artist of the United States Fleet. He served in an official capacity and as a freelance artist for the Navy until his death 45 years later, in 1978.
